The Grates are a three-piece band from Brisbane, Australia. Patience Hodgson (vocals), John Patterson (guitar) and Alana Skyring (drums) formed The Grates in 2002, with Skyring eventually departing to peruse her passion for culinary arts and Ritchie Daniell taking her place.

The Grates have been lauded for their catchy songs and enthusiastic and energetic live show (Patience spends much of the show bouncing around, while singing). They are frequently described as fun: “We just wanna have fun and hope other people do too.” (Patience). Their sound has been compared to the Ramones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Be Your Own Pet.

The band has a distinctive style. All members have a background in art and they design their own album artwork, posters, t-shirts and even socks.

The Grates released an array of limited edition recordings (The Grates EP (2002), Black Dog Black Dog (2003), Pyrate Kids (2003) and Crocodile (2003)) before releasing what is referred to as their debut EP, The Ouch. The Touch, in Australia on 14 February 2004. The EP received a United Kingdom release two months later via the Captains Of Industry collective.

In 2005 the buzz surrounding the band only grew, with festival performances at the Big Day Out, Meredith, Falls Festival and Homebake. The Grates performed at the 2006 Big Day Out Australian shows. They also launched their own a national tour in the first half of 2006, after supporting The Go! Team in 2005 and The Zutons on their 2006 UK tour. In March 2006 they played at the South by Southwest trade music fair in Texas.

Their debut album, Gravity Won’t Get You High, was released in April 2006. It debuted at #9 in the ARIA charts and reached a peak of #9. It was also slated for release in the UK and the United States (June 2006). The first single off the album, “19-20-20″, was released in March as a 7” and iTunes music download.

Their second album, Teeth Lost, Hearts Won, was released in August 2008, with the first single “Burn Bridges” released earlier in July 2008.

The band’s drummer, and one of three co-founders, Alan Skyring, left the band in 2011 to study culinary arts in New York. The band continued as a 2-piece, often inviting guest musicians to fill in for Skyring during the live shows.

The band released its third album Secret Rituals in 2011, and then announced they would be parting ways with their label Dew Process.

In 2014, The Grates announced they would be recording a new album to be released through their own own independent label, Death Valley, with Ritchie Daniell officially joining the group on drums. Dream Team was recorded in just 2 weeks, and released the same month, with the band citing they were unsatisfied with the process of “albums collecting 6 months of cerebral dust in our heads, before an audience gets to finally hear it”.

In September 2018 they announced a reunion tour with the original lineup for December.

The Grates Reunite Original Lineup For ‘Teeth Lost, Hearts Won’ 10th Anniversary Tour

By Tom Williams

Australian indie royalty The Grates are reuniting their original lineup for a new tour in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their 2008 album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won .

The Brisbane band’s original roster — that’s singer Patience Hodgson, guitarist John Patterson and drummer Alana Skyring — will play headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane this November and December, as part of their ‘Reunited And Excited Tour’.

The trio will be playing cuts from Teeth Lost, Hearts Won (think ‘Burn Bridges’, ‘Aw Yeah’ and ‘Carve Your Name’), as well as songs from their 2006 debut album Gravity Won’t Get You High and classics from the rest of their catalogue.

Skyring, who is returning to Australia from her home in New York City especially for the tour, says she “can’t wait to play these songs again with a new energy and perspective”.

“That paths can move apart and come together again is so exciting,” she says.

“When we first broke up as a band we sought council from a psychologist because we wanted to do it without regret,” says Hodgson.

“He suggested we spend a good length of time apart, so when we came back together, it would be as three different people.

“The psychologist was right. We missed each other’s weddings. We missed each other’s birthdays. Finally, we missed each other. International phone calls went from once a year to more, then once a month to more, and we’d be chatting for hours and hours like high schoolers.

“I met Alana and John while I was in high school. They have had the biggest influence on my life. They introduced me to triple j, they made me mix tapes of local bands, they invited me into music. I can’t wait until we are all back on the stage together [for] a joyous celebration of people who changed my life: Alana, John and the audience.”

At The Gates are a metal band hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, who formed in 1990. They are known for being one of the main progenitors of melodic death metal and are one of the biggest cult bands in the world as a result.

In fact, the sound that At The Gates devised was actually referred to as “The Gothenburg Sound” for a time, thanks in no small part to In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, who all emerged from the city as well. I don’t think there’s a more concrete way that you’d know you’ve perfected a genre than when it’s nicknamed after your home town. However, At The Gates are nothing if not a band that transcends culture, language and taste, they’ve earned your respect, whatever your favoured kind of music.

Their story begins with a band called Grotesque. That band was formed in 1988 by future At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg and guitarist Alf Svensson and when they split in 1990, the duo decided to forge ahead with their own project. They recruited bassist Bjorn Mankner at first, however he was soon replaced by original drummer Jonas Bjorler, whose brother Anders was recruited to play guitar and the line-up was completed by Adrian Erlandsson on the drums. The stage was set, and four months after they formed, they went into the studio to record their debut E.P.

“Gardens of Grief” was the product of those sessions, and it was enough to secure the fledgling band a record deal with the seminal British metal label Peaceville Records. With the band having only been together for a year they set to work on their debut album, and in 1992, released “The Red In The Sky Is Ours”. It was an underground hit, however, the band were in something of a creative purple patch and were back in the studio nine months later, recording their follow up album “With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness”.

While the record was as critically acclaimed as their debut, 1993 also saw the departure of founding guitarist Svensson to pursue a career in tattoo and comic artistry. While that could have kneecapped most other bands, At The Gates instead recruited Martin Larsson to take over and in 1994, made their international breakthrough. This came in two forms, the first was a special edition of MTV’s metal show Headbanger’s Ball dedicated to a gig of theirs in the U.K which raised their profile all over the world, and they capitalised with their album “Terminal Spirit Disease”.

With that record they made a form of death metal one of the most critically acclaimed and influential strands of heavy metal to pop up in the 90’s, even having its fair share of commercial success as well. Since then the group have released two further studio albums, beginning with 1995’s “Slaughter Of The Soul” and continuing after splitting up and reforming twice with 2014’s “At War With Reality”. They upend all assumptions about band reformations by still being every bit as edgy and excellent as they always were and they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

At The Gates are a death metal band that have been know to have a few break ups and reunion tours one or twice. They formed in 1990 and broke up in 1996, but they came back in 2007 for their first reunion tour, when they broke up again in 2008 I thought for sure they were done this time, but they came back in 2010 and have been performing ever since. They will actually be releasing another album at the end of 2014, which will have been the first album released in 19 years for them, let's hope they've still got it. The band is a Swedish group and when they released their third and more successful album in 1995, it got them permanent recognition on the Swedish metal scene. On Facebook the group more recently announced their fifth album by a new cover photo, which shows it will be called 'At War with Reality'. They have done well in the industry, but for me there is nothing special about their live performances, I appreciate how hard they work and you can see when they are on stage the sweat pouring off them from how much energy they put into their performance. The use of stage props and lighting was amazing, they put everything they had into it, but for me their music reminds me of nearly every other death metal band that I have seen. But if you are big into this kind of music you will probably love them.

Hell of a band that puts on a hell of a show. Fans of their work should take it upon themselves to see them while they can. Although those who prefer the first 2 over Slaugter or War With Reality will be disappointed by their lack of representation in comparison.

Atlas have a good energy, but no one is really ready for prime time yet. I'll be willing to come back if they improve their musicianship skills.

And Harms Way is among the best powerviolence acts out there. Which doesn't mean a whole lot, but I didn't utterly despise them, so that's good.

Saw At the Gates at House of Blues in Chicago on the Decibel Magazine Tour in April 2015.

Four total bands and At the Gates closed out the show with the longest set. The band was excellent live and you could really tell they enjoyed playing and appreciated the fans.

Also a good mix of tracks from the new album and older records (about a 50/50 split), which was never dull.

There's no reason not to check out At the Gates if your a fan or just listen to a lot of metal that they influenced.

The At the Gates show this past Monday was one of the best melodic death metal experiences live. This band with all those years of experience they put everything on stage to bring to life songs from one of the most iconic albums of the genere, Slaughter of the Soul. At the Gates has proven once again why they are the fathers of melodic death metal with their new album too, playing a surprising number of new songs but never forgetting the songs that brought them here today. Amazing show!

Show was AWESOME! Best time I've seen At The Gates. Partly due to it being the smallest venue with the best sound, so it was more of an up close and personal experience. Great set list of songs, energy, presence, and solid performance.

At the Gates have announced a set of August tour dates in the U.S. and Canada where they will perform their historic  Slaughter of the Soul album in its entirety. Joining them on all but one of the stops will be 21st century thrash icons Municipal Waste with additional support from Thrown Into Exile and Enforced on select dates.

Released in 1995,  Slaughter of the Soul has endured as one of metal's most influential albums of the last quarter century and more, making a significant impact on melodic death metal's trajectory as well as early to mid-2000s metalcore.

Now, fans will have the opportunity to experience the classic record, which opens with a series of all-timers in "Blinded By Fear, "Slaughter of the Soul," "Cold" and "Under a Serpent Sun," live at 13 stops stretching from Aug. 18 through Aug. 30. And by the time the run is underway, Municipal Waste will have released  Electrified Brain , their first new LP since 2017's  Slime and Punishment with 2019's  The Last Rager EP serving as a stopgap.

It'll be a reunion of sorts too as the thrashers opened up for At the Gates on their 2008 reunion run through the U.S. and Canada, which also featured openers Darkest Hour. On this upcoming jaunt, Thrown Into Exile will open each night from Aug. 17 through Aug. 19 with Enforced taking over from Aug. 22 until the tour's conclusion.

See the full list of stops below and look for tickets to go on sale on April 29 at 10AM. Head to At the Gates' website for further ticketing information as it becomes available.

“Honoring Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player of all time”: The Experience Hendrix Tour is returning for the first time in 5 years, with a mega lineup including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Samantha Fish and Zakk Wylde

The all-star lineup will tour the US later this year, marking the 20th anniversary of the multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s trailblazing guitar-playing

Experience Hendrix Tour 2024

The Experience Hendrix Tour will return for 24 US dates this fall, celebrating Jimi Hendrix’s fretboard-burning work with a huge ensemble of all-star electric guitar stars.

The tour marks the 20th anniversary of what its curators are calling a “multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s musical genius”, and comes five years after its last tour.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, and Christone 'Kingfish' Ingram will head up a “powerhouse three-hour concert experience”, which also helps shine a light on up-and-coming blues rock talent.

“I’m excited to rejoin the Experience Hendrix tour this year,” says Shepherd. “It’s always been a great tour with exceptional artists honoring Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player of all time, and his amazing and expansive catalog of songs.

“Being able to do a tour with friends always makes for a great time and this show is not to be missed.”

Other notable artists tapped for the multi-generational line-up include Taj Mahal, Samantha Fish, and Dweezil Zappa, as well as Indigenous guitarist, Mato Nanji.

Flag bearers for a new generation of blues players include Ally Venable – who headlined the 60-date European Blues Caravan tour at just 20 years old – and Blues Foundation’s 2023 International Blues Challenge winner, Mathias Lattin.

There’s even room for two-hand tapping jazz virtuoso Stanley Jordan, who is sure to offer a fresh take on some of Hendrix’s cuts.

Experience Hendrix Tour 2024

The full list of artists confirmed reads: Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kingfish, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Samantha Fish, Dweezil Zappa, Taj Mahal, Noah Hunt, Chuck Campbell and Calvin Cooke (The Slide Brothers), Stanley Jordan, Ally Venable, Mato Nanji (Indigenous), Dylan Triplett, Ayron Jones, Artur Menezes, Mathias Lattin and Hendri Brown.

Some dates will also feature additional special guests, including legendary Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, with more set to be announced in the future.

The tour’s concept dates back to 2001, when a single concert was held in San Diego. The show was repeated a year later, before hitting the road as a fully fledged tour in 2004.

The 2024 edition stops in the Pacific Northwest, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, before travelling through Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Aptly, the showcase kicks off in Hendrix’s hometown, at Seattle’s Paramount Theater.

The tour works with a rotating line-up, meaning the guitarists performing each night will vary. For detailed information, head to the Experience Hendrix Tour website .
