The city of Fort Walton Beach is primarily known for its beautiful beaches and good times, but back off the beach is a community with a variety of things to see and do. The attractions are varied and range from historic archaeological sites to Buddhist temples, right through to the retired war machines of the Air Force.

Many of the tourist attractions are close together, so it's easy to see a majority of them in a morning or afternoon. Save these attractions for a cloudy or rainy day, and head directly to the wonderful white sands and warm waters of Okaloosa Island . These are what make Fort Walton a wonderful family destination.

Okaloosa Island is just a short bridge crossing from the city of Fort Walton Beach. Out here is where most visitors to Fort Walton Beach spend their time, and the reason for that is the incredible white-sand beaches that line the eastern shoreline.

Condo towers and resorts stretch along the western part of the island; however, the eastern section is wide open, with state and national parks making for easy access to the stunning beaches.

Okaloosa Island has several sections that are owned by the US Military and, as a result, are completely undeveloped and remain in their natural state. Some areas are open to the public with free passes; others are restricted.

One of the top attractions in Fort Walton Beach is the Island Pier (formerly known as the Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier). It's an ideal place to visit if you are an avid angler. Catches here include blue runner, lady fish, pompano, redfish, black drum, and many others. It's one of the hot spots for fishing along Santa Rosa Island.

However, it's not all about fishing, the pier is an ideal place for early birds to catch a sunrise. If you are less ambitious than that, consider a relaxing 1,262-foot stroll out to the end – you'll have covered nearly half a mile by the time you return to shore. Along the way, pelicans, seagulls, and herons will keep you company, and if you are lucky, you might even spot some dolphins cruising the waves.

Immediately to the north of the pier is a spectacular beach backed by a funky area known as The Boardwalk , with shops and restaurants, and right next door is the Gulfarium. This is the most active area of Okaloosa Island. Spread your towel on the sand, or set up your beach chairs and umbrella and soak up the scene.

The Air Force Armament Museum is easily spotted off highway 85, just look for a huge, sleek, black plane; a giant helicopter; or the huge B-52 Bomber resting peacefully on the large lawns. However, the planes outside are just part of the collection of 29 aircraft located at the museum. Over two million people have visited the Air Force Armament Museum since its inception in 1976.

In addition to the planes outside, aircraft are also located inside the large museum building. The museum is also home to several hundred bombs and other armament used in the theater of war. One of the most interesting is the GBU-43/B MOAB. The acronym stands for "massive ordinance air blast" but is also known by its nickname "mother of all bombs." Considered at one time to be the most powerful non-nuclear bomb in the United States, it gives one pause to stand and look at it mounted on the sidewalk outside the museum building.

Inside the museum building are additional aircraft and aerial munitions, some of which are hung from the ceiling. Of particular interest is the Fat Man nuclear bomb, one of only 120 ever made. It is identical to the same Fat Man bomb that was exploded over Nagasaki in World War II.

The museum building is open Monday to Saturday; however, the grounds, where a majority of the aircraft are located, is open every day.

The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, located right on the beach on Okaloosa Island, is a must-see if you are a family looking to entertain the kids for an afternoon. Here, you'll find all kinds of marine mammals performing shows and interacting with guests. First opened in 1955, the adventure park has been thrilling millions of visitors for nearly 70 years.

Shows change throughout the year, but generally at least seven shows take place each day. These include a dolphin show where they fly through the air and do amazing tricks, a fun and interactive California sea lion show, and perhaps the cutest show of them all: amusing Asian otters being themselves and having a good time.

For an additional fee, the animals are available for private or group interactions. Some of these interactions include snorkeling with stingrays, swimming with dolphins, and feeding and touching African penguins; another includes holding baby alligators. All encounters are fully supervised with a specially trained Gulfarium staff member.

For a less commercial and busy beach on Okaloosa Island, head just a short distance east to John C. Beasley Park. Here, you'll find wide-open spaces and the ability to find your perfect patch of sand. The beach is especially beautiful, and there's a good chance you may be sharing your beach day with a wedding party posing for pictures.

The water is clear and shallow for a fair distance out, making it ideal for wading and wallowing. Lifeguards are on duty to keep an eye on the young ones and those who are not strong swimmers.

The stretch of beach to the east is undeveloped, as it's owned by the US military. It's one of the few places where you can walk along and see what the beaches used to look like before many of them sprouted condos and resorts.

Unlike many other beaches along this coastline, John C. Beasley Park features extensive free parking. This can be a real bonus on busy summer weekends. Facilities here include restrooms, changerooms, and showers. A food vendor usually operates when the park is busy.

If you've had enough of the sun, sand, and surf and are looking for something completely different to do, head to Wild Willy's Adventure Zone. A trip here is almost guaranteed to engage and excite children of all ages with rides and activities.

Race tracks, bumper boats, mini golf (putt-putt), laser tag, and even a 4D theater provide a non-stop entertainment assortment. For those that are brave enough, an elevated rope course 60 feet in the air with five levels of difficulties is also an option.

Located in the heart of a residential area, the Wat Mongkolratanaram Buddhist Temple is worth making the drive to visit. The temple grounds are a pleasant and shady place to spend some time relaxing with friends and family. The temple and Buddha are clad in gold paint, and the bright colors make for interesting photography.

If you find yourself here in Fort Walton Beach on a Sunday morning between 9:30am and 2pm, the smells originating from the kitchen behind the temple will make your mouth water. Grab some cash, head around back, and you'll find multiple vendors serving up some of the city's best Thai food . Exchange your money for tokens and then decide what you'd like to eat as you walk around.

The temple has set up picnic tables under large trees, where you can feast on your selections. Don't be afraid to go back for more – the money goes back to supporting the monks and the upkeep of the temple.

Indian Temple Mound Museum

It may seem odd that an archaeological site dating from the 12th century is located at the junction of two busy roadways, but Florida is always full of surprises. Easily missed, the Indian Temple Mound and associated museum is well worth a stop to learn about the people who first lived here.

The mound itself is 12 feet high and is covered at the top by a small wooden building. Access is from the museum entrance area (the original street side access is closed) and up a series of steps and platforms. The mound contains approximately 100,000 cubic feet of shells, mud, and sand. Researchers feel that the mound was once used as a religious center from 700 to 1500 CE.

Inside the museum building are over 1,000 artifacts and a more detailed description of the people who once lived here over the past 12,000 years. Other exhibits showcase the booty of pirates and interesting items from early European settlers.

The Indian Temple Mound is located close to the Camp Walton Schoolhouse, and both can be easily visited in one stop.

Camp Walton Schoolhouse

For a bit of local Fort Walton history and to understand what going to school in the early 20th century was like, swing by the Camp Walton Schoolhouse. Located on the same grounds as the Indian Temple Mound, in Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center, the school was the main educational center in the region, and housed 15 students in its two rooms. Grades one through eight were taught by a single teacher.

In behind the schoolhouse are additional buildings, one of which is the Garnier Post Office Museum. Inside are displays detailing the history of the postal service in the local area from 1918 to 1956. The second building houses exhibits relating to the US Civil War.

Liza Jackson Park is a pleasant place to hold a large outdoor family gathering. Set up your picnic under the large trees or in one of the sheltered gazebos. You'll find plenty of space for an impromptu game of football or Frisbee or even a game of tag for the little ones.

Liza Jackson Park is one of the best places in the area to launch your boat. A wide and smooth launch and docks provide a great spot to access Santa Rosa Sound and the Gulf of Mexico.

This lively city has plenty to offer for sightseeing, including the perfectly preserved Old Pensacola Historic Village, one of the very first settlements in the United States; a vibrant downtown scene on Palafox Street; and musical history along the Blues Trail in North Hill.

Just outside of town, the Civil-War-era Fort Pickens is not to be missed. Climb up on its old walls and see the cannons that, at the time of their manufacture, were some of the largest in the world.

While many travelers prefer a nice hotel, others are looking for a more rustic experience. Camping at Henderson Beach State Park allows visitors to immerse themselves in the outdoors and enjoy 30-foot sand dunes and warm Gulf Coast waters.

The state park offers 60 campsites, fishing opportunities and a nature trail. It’s adjacent to the beach, and campers can access the water using the boardwalk.

Visitors can make reservations up to 10 months in advance (11 months for Florida residents). Campsite prices range from $16 to $42 per night and cabins are $30 to $160 a night. 8. Become a mermaid at Reefs & Wrecks Remembered

If you or your child has ever dreamed of becoming a mermaid, this dream can become reality at Reefs and Wrecks. This PADI-certified company offers three different types of mermaid experiences for different levels of swimmers.

The entry level course is the Discover Mermaid experience in a shallow pool. For experienced divers, the Advanced Mermaid course includes two sessions in open water where you can test out your mermaid skills. Prices start at $145 and go up to $450, depending on the course selected.

The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park is a unique experience for travelers. The park offers numerous animal encounters, including dolphins, harbor seals, penguins and stingrays.

Ticket prices are $30 or less, depending on your age. Florida residents receive a discount.

One of the experiences available is to snorkel in Stingray Bay. For an additional $59, you'll get 30 minutes to snorkel and interact with cownose rays, small sharks, groupers and numerous fish species.

15 Best Things to Do in Fort Walton Beach (FL)

On the Florida Panhandle’s Emerald Coast, this city is my idea of a dream beach destination. The shoreline on Okaloosa Island, with its sugar-white sands and twinkling clear waters, needs to be seen to be believed. 

On the gulf here you can choose between natural, undeveloped beaches, and all the fun of the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk.

This barrier island is separated from the mainland by Choctawhatchee Bay, teeming with marine life including playful dolphins.

Last but not least, Fort Walton Beach has a sociable downtown, with a lot of dining options, a stunning waterfront park, and a whole campus of museums.

1. John Beasley Park

East of the big attractions on Okaloosa Island, this stretch of beach has a more natural setting than the others nearby.

The shore at John Beasley Park is hemmed by a wall of picture-perfect sand dunes. A pair of wheelchair-accessible boardwalks takes you over this environment to the beach.

I will always be captivated by the sugar-white beaches in the Destina area, and this one is no different. You’ve got those same snowy sands, lapped by glistening emerald waters.

For amenities John Beasley Park is rather low-key, with showers, restrooms, and a pair of pavilions at the highest point in the dunes.

2. Downtown Fort Walton Beach

Fronting the busy Miracle Strip Parkway, Fort Walton Beach has a downtown area that won me over right away.

With some grand old commercial buildings, this is a vivacious commercial district. Food-wise, you could come here for two weeks straight, and not eat at the same spot.

There’s seafood, steaks, tapas, classic pub grub, tacos, French cuisine, diner food, and much more. For dinner and a movie hit up Suds N Cinema, housed in a theater from 1940.

Meanwhile on the north side of the Miracle Strip there’s culture at Heritage Park, a campus of museums on the site of a Native American mound. 

Then, to the south, Landing Park is a peaceful bayfront space, hosting many of the city’s big events.

3. The Island Pier

Okaloosa Island’s immaculate sands and turquoise waters look even better from the signature pier. Reaching out into the gulf for more than 1,250 feet, this landmark dates to 1998. 

The current structure replaced an earlier pier from 1972, which was wrecked by Hurricane Erin. That’s a familiar tale for most Florida piers, but everything was in ship shape when I took a stroll.

The Island Pier is always crowded with fishing folk, trying to land anything from king mackerels to black fin tuna. I’m not going too far when I say that these waters are teeming with marine wildlife.

Look out for dolphins, stingrays, sharks and sea turtles, while pelicans and herons will often perch on the guardrails. Also stick around until late in the day, when everything is aglow.

4. Air Force Armament Museum

Established in 1935, the Eglin Air Force Base occupies a vast, 724-square-mile swath of Fort Walton Beach’s hinterland.

On the edge of this installation you can visit a stellar museum dedicated to US Air Force weaponry. I was figuratively blown away by the amount of hardware on show at the Air Force Armament Museum.

Among the many highlights are an AMRAAM missile, a Paveway laser-guided bomb, a Tomahawk, and even a MOAB (Mother of all Bombs).

These bombs, rockets and missiles are matched with a mind-boggling fleet of aircraft. Some notables are the Blackbird, the B-52 and the ac-130.

5. Liza Jackson Park

With 1,000+ feet of waterfront, this park on Miracle Strip Parkway is a scenic picnic spot and is also great for exercising your dog. 

Not only is there a beach, you’ve got a fishing pier and a place to launch your boat if you want to get out on the water. 

The beach is dog-friendly, and an excellent place for pups to cool off on hot days. Kids will enjoy the playground, and families will appreciate the picnic pavilions. 

Whether you simply want to enjoy a stroll in the park by yourself or want a family activity, this is an excellent spot for a relaxed couple of hours.

6. Indian Temple Mound Museum

The main attraction at Fort Walton Beach’s Heritage Park is an ancient platform mound rising over the Miracle Strip Parkway. 

Built around 850 CE by the Pensacola culture, the mound is one of just three of its kind on the Florida panhandle. 

When the Indian Temple Mound Museum opened on the site in 1962 it became the first municipal museum in Florida. The exhibits document more than 15,000 years of human history in Northwest Florida. 

I could lose hours in these galleries, poring over the thousands of artifacts fashioned from stone, shell, and bone. The collection of prehistoric pottery is sensational and is one of the most important in the Southeastern United States.

7. Downtown Fort Walton Beach Farmers Market

If you’re looking for a slice of local life, why not try out the local farmers market. Taking place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 8 am–1 pm, this is the perfect place to start the weekend.

Here you can find fresh produce from local farmers, as well as freshly prepared street food. There are also artists and craftspeople selling their own handmade goods.

The beauty of a place like this for me is you never know what you might find. Perhaps one week you might come upon perfectly ripe fruit or a rare spice you were looking for to do some home-cooking. The next time you might discover a delicious pot of jelly or handcrafted bread.

8. Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone

Awaiting you on Okaloosa Island is the largest family entertainment center in Northwest Florida. 

Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone is absolutely packed with activities and attractions. The big ones when I was here were a dinosaur-themed adventure golf course, three go-kart tracks, immersive laser tag, and a redemption arcade with more than 60 games. 

This is the ideal place to come for a change of scenery if you need a break from the beach. If your child has a birthday coming up, you can book a party, with a range of discounted packages available.

9. Goofy Golf

I don’t know about you, but I can’t visit the shore without playing a round or two of mini golf. Opened way back in 1958 Goofy Golf also packs a big dose of nostalgia.

The emblem for this attraction is Hammy, a 23-foot dinosaur standing proud along Elgin Parkway. 

Painted glossy green, Hammy has seen a lot in his time. He collapsed and shattered into pieces in 2003, and spent five years in recovery before returning to his rightful spot in 2008.

Like their mascot, the two 16-hole courses are a time capsule from the mid-20th century. Nothing significant has been changed, from the wooded skirting to the bizarre array of model animals.

10. Fort Walton Beach Landing Park

Something that really adds to the downtown area is this gorgeous park sloping down to the water. A passive space, Landing Park has a boat ramp, waterfront boardwalk, a fishing pier, and a stage for events. 

This is a lovely, relaxed space, and a go-to location for public shindigs in Fort Walton Beach. You may find yourself here on a Friday night for concerts, or movies in the park with the stars above for a backdrop, or the city’s annual Fourth of July Fireworks. 

Twice a month, the Landing also plays host to the Downtown Fort Walton Beach Farmers Market, which I’ll cover later in my list.

11. Okaloosa Island Boardwalk

The most happening stretch of beach on Okaloosa Island has a lively commercial district behind it. This shorefront drag along Miracle Strip Parkway is endowed with shops, restaurants, entertainment and attractions.

You can spend a fun hour or two on the boardwalk shopping for beachwear, kites, or vacation souvenirs.

If you’re up for seafood, you’re in good hands at the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk with Floyd’s Shrimp House and Crab Trap next door to each other. There’s also a splash pad, children’s playground, and sand volleyball courts by the beach.

Finally, on Wednesdays in summer this place closes out the day with an uplifting fireworks display.

12. Emerald Coast Science Center

This facility is the best place for families to learn about all things science. There are exhibits on everything from robotics to paleontology, the color spectrum, ecology, space science and engineering.

One way the Emerald Coast Science Center stands out in my book is for its animal exhibits. Kids can get up close to an assortment of creatures including parrots, sugar gliders, and degus.

There’s a lot of outdoor space, with a butterfly garden, turtle habitat, and a treehouse in a live oak. 

The center is also known for its events, with workshops, planetarium evenings, experimenters’ labs, chemistry corners, maker days, and more.

13. Ross Marler Park

On Okaloosa Island, this sublime park is unique for facing back across Choctawhatchee Bay. If you happen to catch red flags on the gulf beaches, this is a tranquil backup.

There’s a narrow beach tracing the bay, and the pool-like waters are safe for small children. You can launch a boat here to spend a day out fishing or observing wildlife in this flourishing tidal system. 

The fishing pier in Ross Marler Park has an ADA-accessible platform, while there’s a host of shelters among the pines, with picnic tables and grills.

14. Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum

Something else to check out at Heritage Park is a preserved two-room schoolhouse in use from 1911 until 1936. This was Camp Walton’s first school, starting out with one room, and adding another for high school students in 1925. 

After closing, the schoolrooms were used as apartments until as late as the 1970s. The building was then moved to the Heritage Park in 2006 when it was opened to the public.

This little museum gave me a privileged look into the history of education in this corner of Florida. The school rooms are furnished with original desks, as well as blackboards, old stoves, and have interesting little displays on the walls.

15. Garnier Post Office Museum

My final entry for the Heritage Park is a museum telling the story of the early postal service in Okaloosa County in the first decades of the 20th century. 

This tiny building served as the local post office from when it was built in 1918 until 1956. I was intrigued to learn that it was also a polling place for the area at that time. 

The Garnier Post Office was restored in 1988 and is a small but interesting detour during your visit to the Heritage Park. 

You won’t need to spend more than a couple of minutes on the interior, which has a small display of postal history, and is decorated as it would have been in the 1910s.

James Lee Park

Henderson Beach State Park

Yet another public access point with ample parking, pavilions, stunning stretches of sand, and picnic and BBQ services. Since this is a state park the parking is paid and because of this, the beach is often less crowded.

Norriego Point

This “end of the line” beach faces the Destin Bridge and is a haven for snorkelers and divers as well as jetskiers and those just looking for a scenic stretch of sand to lay out on. Here, you’ll find the waters to be calmer than most of the other beaches in the area. At low tide, you can also explore tide pools and spot hermit crabs and fish.

John Beasley Park

Swimming, fishing, and strolling the sand for shells can all be done here on this lovely Okaloosa Island Beach. Framed by grasses and emerald waters, this beach is a favorite with sunbathers looking for a little peace and quiet. Just don’t forget to bring your umbrella if you’re hoping for some sun protection.

3. Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

This marine park does it all. Here you’ll learn about the local flora and fauna of Northwestern Florida and have the opportunity to get up-close, and sometimes hands-on encounters, with the on-site animals. The Gulfarium hosts dolphin and sea lion shows and has a massive gulf Sea Turtle rehabilitation program that has been responsible for releasing hundreds of healthy sea turtle babies into the ocean since 2015.

If your family is filled with animal lovers, then you should also pay a visit to the Emerald Coast Zoo, just a 45-min drive inland from FWB.

4. Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone

Every small town in America worth its salt has one of these classic kid-friendly amusement parks. Here you’ll find mini-golf alongside go-karts, bumper boats, a ropes course, and a 4d movie theatre. If you have young children, Wild Willy’s is a must-visit. Oh, and did we mention everything is Dinosaur-themed?

5. Okaloosa Island Pier

Stretching out more than 1,200 feet over the Gulf of Mexico, this skinny fishing pier is perfect for an afternoon walk or to spot marine life with the kids. It’s a local’s favorite destination around sunset or sunrise when you can watch the anglers reel in their catch of the day. Keep in mind, there is a small $2 fee to walk the pier.

6. Go Shopping at Downtown Fort Walton Beach

Nicknamed the Miracle Strip Parkway, scenic highway 98 cuts through Downtown Fort Walton Beach and offers shopaholics lots of options to snag some souvenirs. You can even walk to the shops from the nearby historical museums.

Garnier Post Office Museum

Located in downtown Fort Walton Beach, this historic building holds artifacts from the 1910s-50s postal era and is now a part of the Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center.

Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum

Before the days of Fort Walton Beach, the town of Camp Walton existed. This two-room structure was the schoolhouse.

Fort Walton Temple Mound

While this space isn’t technically a museum, it is within the museum grounds and bears an important historical significance to the people of Fort Walton Beach. Here, you’ll find a 12-foot by 223-foot mound created by the Mound Builder Culture back in 800-1400 C.E. It’s the largest of its kind and was likely used as a ceremonial and political center for the prehistoric people.

Indian Temple Mound Museum

This is arguably the most important museum on this list. (It’s also where you’ll pay an entrance fee for all the above-listed museums in the Heritage Park and Cultural Center. Here, you and your family can admire 12,000 years of Native American history on display with artifacts made of clay, bone, and shell, as well as a massive collection of prehistoric ceramics.

A handful of Civil War exhibits are strewn about the grounds of the Heritage Park and Cultural Center.

Air Force Armament Museum

Unlike the other museums on this list, the Air Force Armament Museum is located about 7 miles North of FWB rather than downtown in the Heritage Park and Cultural Center . Here you’ll find many early aviation warfare pieces, including some of the world’s fastest planes. This is a great place for history buffs and WW2 enthusiasts and admission is free.

With many beautiful beaches, warm weather, and plenty of things to do outdoors, a vacation to Florida is always a good idea.

There are many different tourist destinations in Florida. However, Destin has become a favorite of many. Due to the gorgeous beaches, the emeral water, and the white sandy beaches, Destin offers everything that a dream vacation can give.

Around Destin, there are quite a few amazing beaches to visit. Here are the five best vacation beaches near Destin, Florida.

5. Navarre Beach

Navarre Beach is known as Florida's "Best Kept Secret" and rightfully so. The beach is about an hour drive away from Destin, which is more than doable for a day trip.

Known for its beautiful white sand and clear water, this destination gives a much quieter surrounding for people not looking for the jam-packed beaches in Destin.

4. Miramar Beach

As will be the trend of all beaches in the Destin area, Miramar Beach features emerald water and white sand. The visual of the beach is breathtaking.

There are plenty of entertaining things to do at Miramar Beach. Visitors can enjoy parasailing, paddleboarding, or simply the beautiful sun with the sand between their toes. The Silver Sands Outlet Center is also nearby, which features over 100 outlets.

3. Okaloosa Island Beach

Located close to Fort Walton Beach and Destin, Okaloosa Beach is a must visit.

Visitors will be welcomed by many different shops and restaurants along with a beautiful boardwalk and piers. The beach itself can be very busy, but the sheer beauty of the environment makes it worth the business.

2. Crystal Beach

One of the most popular vacation spots in the panhandle is none other than Crystal Beach. The area offers beautiful cottages and is located off of Scenic Highway 98.

Every vacation has to come with good food and Crystal Beach is close to some amazing restaurants. The Crab Trap and Camille's Cafe & Restaurant offer great options for dining. Destin Commons are also naerly, which is an outdoor lifestyle center with restaurants, boutique's and plenty of other amazing attractions.

1. Crab Island

While not your typical beach, Crab Island is a dream destination for any trip to the Destin area. Crab Island is reachable by boat and is a massive sandbar near Choctawhatchee Bay.

If you enjoy standing in waist-deep water, enjoying good drinks, and plenty of entertainment, Crab Island would be a great place to visit. Swimming and snorkeling are amazing on the sandbar and there are floating restaurants to enjoy as well.

Sandy shores and shark sightings: The new reality for beach lovers

ST. TERESA — Dean Grubbs has a story or two about sharks. 

He hooked his first juvenile sharpnose as a 7-year-old along the coast of Taylor County, Florida. 

"I just remember how strong that little fish was and how cool it was," the Florida State University marine ecologist said about his first encounter with a shark. "And when we let it go, it just took off. I thought that was the coolest thing."

Three years later, while scalloping in waist-deep water with his family in an area known as Big Grassy Island, a great hammerhead charged him — dorsal fin sticking out of the water and all — like a 7,000-horsepower Top Fuel dragster, only to deploy its parachute at the last second to stop. The fish's wake pushed the catatonic 10-year-old backwards. 

"That solidified it for me," Grubbs said while reminiscing from his research office at the university's Coastal & Marine Laboratory here. "I want to study that animal."

And so it's been — sharks: A 40+ year love affair.

When asked about the two separate shark attacks that happened along the Florida Panhandle on June 7, the coastal and deep-sea shark expert said bites are still "incredibly rare." But acknowledged that such incidents are dreadful for the families involved, and that such incidents can affect seaside economies.

The International Shark Attack File, administered by the University of Florida's Museum of Natural History, reports that since 1882, the Panhandle counties of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf and Franklin have had 26 confirmed, and unprovoked, shark attacks.

Those are getting-struck-by-lighting odds. Maybe even winning-the-Powerball odds.

There are only a handful of reasons why sharks swim closer to shore, Grubbs continued. The first is food: Sharks are following bait fish and other prey. Second: Sharks are avoiding predators; Third: Sharks are mating, or looking for a safe place to rear their offspring. Fourth: abiotic factors such as water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen.

And with ocean waters warming, this predator-prey dynamic is evolving faster, as are the behaviors, and frequencies, of people visiting the beach.

"This area right here at the lab where we're sitting, our (water) temperature has warmed over 2 degrees in the last 15, 16 years," Grubbs said. "And the winter (water) temperatures warmed over 3 degrees in that same time frame."

To cool off, sharks migrate north or go into deeper water. The temperature equilibrium between swimming north or going deeper is not yet fully understood, Grubbs said.

The issue about migrating north in the Gulf of Mexico is that there's ... well, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. And people. Nice, happy people.

Grubbs does offer tips to avoid shark encounters:

1. Don't swim during sunrise and sunset; sharks are looking for food.

2. Stay away from sandbars; sandbars are edge habitats for food. 

3. Don't swim where people are fishing or cleaning fish.

4. Stay away from river mouths; sharks use these areas to rear their young.

5. Don't wear sparkly jewelry into the water; it can confuse a shark for bait fish.

6. Don't wear bathing suits with a lot of color contrast; they can confuse a shark for prey.

Gavin Naylor, program director of the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida, and colleague of Grubbs', says that in the past, copper acetate, nets, electrical shock and wrist magnets were used to try and stop shark attacks. They didn't work.

"An animal that's hungry doesn't care about a little shock," Naylor said.

The best way forward to keep swimmers safe from shark attacks are public information campaigns by local governments, Naylor added. And drones. "(Cities can) hire drone pilots to fly once an hour, up and down the beach during daylight hours, to look for sharks."

Grubbs agrees. 

"We were doing a shark survey right off the beach in Destin, and you know, they have this big ship that comes out, cruises back and forth with a giant electronic billboard on it," Grubbs paused, reflecting on how the times have changed since he was a scalloping and spear fishing 10-year-old. "And this billboard is advertising restaurants and tourist attractions. Why not advertise for shark safety?"
