"visiting the place is a very nice experience as it is a very beautiful place to see one of the 7 wonders of the world, the culture, the constructions and the temples are amazing as they are detailed a long time ago, the entrance is spectacular, the guide very attentive and I recommend it very much if you like the mayan culture and the ancient constrictions."

Chichen Itza is a very impressive place. Make sure to be there early, best before park opening at 8am and take your photos without many people. At around 10am it will get very crowded and parking is most likely full.

"Blown away—spectacular site with many different areas to explore. Plan to arrive as early as possible. It really filled up by midday. We opted to not hire a guide as we had written guide info from Lonely Planet. Take water with you while you walk around and wear comfortable shoes."

"You can't miss this if you go visit Cancun, Play del Carmen, or surrounding areas."

"The benefit of going early morning, especially during Covid times, is you essentially have the historic site to yourself, which is very very rare. Our guide explained everything in detail and we were able to wrap up by noon time and out by 12-01"

Joshua was an incredible guide. He was so knowledgeable and we learned so much about the Mayans and the history of Chichenitza. Highly recommend!

Nomad666097 – May 10, 2024

The best tour! A great experience from start to finish, pick up was prompt and transportation comfortable, stopping for comfort breaks and refreshments. The guide from Chris was very comprehensive, informative and interesting. I would recommend this to anyone. Thanks for a great trip.

Susanna – April 23, 2024

A Wonderful Private Tour! We had a marvelous private tour of Chichen Itza with Chris as our guide and Omar as our driver. It was wonderful! They picked us up at 6 AM at our hotel in Playa del Carmen for the 2+ hour drive to Chichen Itza, which was perfect, because we arrived before the site opened and were the first people to enter the site. We were able to take photos before others arrived, so our pics are pristine! There were no crowds at all while we were there touring, although when we left, the big tour buses were arriving, so the timing was perfect! Chris was a wonderful guide, Omar a great driver, and the communication as we were booking the tour was fast and efficient! We love that they were able to do a customized private tour — that’s the way to go! We would absolutely tour with them again!

996JS – April 12, 2024

Had a great time. Had a great time with our guide, Chris. He was knowledgeable, accommodating and fun to talk to. Omar was a great driver. Very respectful and nice. Thank you, guys!

Jessica B. – April 12, 2024

Easy to book- great staff! Omar was a great driver. We would have liked to take our tour guide Chris home with us. So knowledgeable and fun.

Pam C – March 15, 2024

We had a wonderful time on the Express Chichén Itzá tour. We had a private van for our group of 4. We got up super early, but it was totally worth it to beat the crowds and the heat. Our tour guide Joshua was fantastic. So knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. We loved learning all this history. Our driver Enrique did a great job. And he found us some amazing pork sandwiches for a snack on our ride home. I would 100% recommend this tour company!

Emily – February 12, 2024

Amazing to see in person! My husband and I took the express Chichen Itza private tour. Joshua was our tour guide and it was so worth the time and money. We got there before it opened, and we got wonderful pictures before the crowds arrived. It’s a long drive, but once in a lifetime experience.

Brad – January 22, 2024

Claire was an amazing guide, her knowledge and passion for history made our trip unforgettable. Highly recommended.

Julie – January 12, 2024

Chris made our experience in Chichen Itza exceptional. His insights and organization were top-notch. Thank you!

Joanna – January 6, 2024

We absolutely loved our Chichen Itza Express Private Tour! Juan was VERY knowledgeable and made the tour engaging, even for those of us who had been there in the past. We were picked up at 6 am from our hotel in Playa del Carmen, and it was well worth it because we had the place to ourselves when we arrived. Our group of 10 got some very cool shots at multiple locations as a result!! Furthermore, I HIGHLY recommend this tour and this company. Claire answered all of our questions before we even booked the trip, and keep constant communication leading up to the tour date. The entire experience from customer service to day of tour was top notch. I’ll come back to them any time I’m in the area.

SLMKS – December 29, 2023

Great private tour of Chichen Itzá My husband, 16 year old daughter, and I went on a private tour of Chichen Itzá this week. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Mexico. Our guide, Joshua, was able to answer all our questions and made Mexican/Mayan history so interesting. You could tell he loved history and enjoyed sharing it with his clients. Even our teenager was 100% engaged in the experience. Our driver, Enrique, did an excellent job of making us feel safe on the road and kept our belongings safe while we walked around the sites. We didn’t think a big bus tour would have delivered nearly the same experience. Additionally, my husband walks with a walker, but Absolute Adventure was so accommodating and helpful that it was pretty easy for him to fully participate. I highly recommend!

Gayla – December 27, 2023

this was one of the most interesting tour that I have been on. Juan was informative and made the tour fun! I would highly recommend this tour and especially this tour guide!

Sofie – November 1, 2023

Chitzen Itza was beautiful in the morning sun. Chitzen Itza was definitely worth seeing. Our guide could speak perfect English and French and was a very good guide. We got answers to all our questions. He could tell very engaging stories and also told us a lot about current customs and habits in Mexico. This tour operator is definitely recommended.

Alison – November 1, 2023

Brought to life the history of the Mayan civilisation. We wanted a chance to enjoy the magic of Chichen Itza without the crowds and be able to learn about its history and the Mayan culture in a more personal way and be able to ask questions as we explored. Chris ensured this happened. He was very knowledgable and friendly and brought the history to life in his explanations. It was wonderful to be looked after so well. Carlos our driver gave us a comfortable ride and made us feel safe and secure. Many thanks.

Christian – August 29, 2023

Private Express Tour Chichen Itza from Playa Del Carmen. Easy early pick up at 5:30am at the hotel entrance. Alex and the driver were already waiting for us. We stopped for two bathroom breaks and some snacks on the way there. Alex told us all about the background and history of Chichen Itza during the drive. We arrived at the Chichen Itza entrance 15mins before opening. Alex had already entrance tickets so we were on of the very first visitors who could enter the sight. The atmosphere that Chichen Itza provides when no one else is there is incredible. Worth the early get up and a memory for life. It is not the same anymore when the huge crowds arrive at little after. Alex showed us the whole area and stop at every interesting point including the cenote. We took beautiful pictures and also enjoyed the time to look at the souvenirs that the local folks had to offer.

Martha – July 15, 2023

We went on the Chichen Itzá express tour. Everything went smooth from booking and confirmations to communication needed for pickup. The day of the tour we had our driver Omar and our tour guide Juan. Both were amazing and learned so much during our tour. Juan also takes some amazing pictures! I would highly recommend this tour and would book them again for other tours next time I come. They were so friendly and welcoming during the tour.

Corinne – June 29, 2023

We did the Chichen Itza Private tour and thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Early pick up suited us well and we arrived as it was opening so missed the crowds and the heat which was great. Our tour guide Arturo was incredible and was very lovely and knowledgeable. The van was comfortable and with aircon and we enjoyed the snacks and beverages provided. Would definitely recommend to others.

Ashley – August 8, 2021

We had a wonderful time with Claire on our tour. Very informative. 100% recommend

Kelly – June 3, 2019

This was the perfect way to visit Chichen Itza. With a private van from our hotel and private guide. Juan was really friendly and knowledgeable. We were picked up on time early morning, we visited the full site before the crowds and had a little time to shop around. Thank you Juan!

Ana – March 18, 2019

Amazing tour with Juan! We just wanted to visit chichen itza without cenote or valladolid. Don’t be wrong, tour name is express but Juan guided us through the whole site and answered all our questions! We received the pictures of the ruins just after the tour, thank you for the great day and memories!

CHICHEN ITZA EXPRESS

The only Chichen Itza tour that gets you there and back in only 9 hours!  The incredible wonder of the world, Chichen Itza, is about a 2.5 hour drive from Playa del Carmen, so most tours will take about 12 hours to complete.  The difference essentially is that this tour does not visit a cenote for swimming as most others do, and doesn't include a stop at a restaurant for a buffet lunch, and there are only 2 hours at the ruins site instead of 3 hours.  This tour is simple - go to Chichen Itza, see Chichen Itza, and return.

THIS TOUR IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE SEE OUR CHICHEN ITZA TOURS

On your way to Chichen Itza, you'll enjoy a box breakfast to take the edge off.  Once at Chichen Itza, your expert archaeological guide will give you a fascinating tour of the ruins site, enveloping you in intrigue, mystery and the stunning culture and history of the Mayas.  You'll have free time to explore on your own and take photos, or to grab a bite to eat or drink at one of the local stands.  After your camera's data card is full of incredible shots, we'll head back to Playa del Carmen and have you there by about 4:00 PM.

Chichen Itza

OUR ADVICE:   This is a good option if you don't care about seeing a cenote or having a sit-down lunch during the day, and would prefer to get home in plenty of time for dinner at your hotel.  For most people we recommend to do the full tour including the cenote, but this is an alternative depending on your interests.

Don't Forget:

  • Biodegradable Sunblock
  • Money for Food, Drinks, etc.
  • Drink Lots of Water

Kids: All ages welcome. Kids prices apply to ages 5-11. Kids ages 3-4 must pay the Chichen Itza Entrance Fee of 481 Mexican Pesos (Approx. $25.00 USD) in cash on the day of the tour. The entrance fee is already included in the ticket for ages 5-11.

Cruise Passengers:   This tour is not compatible with most cruise schedules.  We suggest considering a tour to Tulum or Coba instead for your cruise excursion.

Can I skip the transportation and take my own car?

Although we recommend our hassle-free transportation from your hotel or Airbnb you can take your car and leave the car at a meeting point. In between the activities, we will take you with our transportation and after the excursion, we bring you back to the car. Please take note that parking fees are not included. Please contact our customer service if you want to bring your own car.

How many people can sign up for an excursion?

In our excursions, we create small groups so that you can enjoy the freedom of movement and be able to interact closely with your surroundings, as well as so that you can receive more personalized attention from our guides. This small size ensures that your group will not encroach on your personal experience. Most of our transportations fits 12 persons but some of our excursions involve boat trips, which may have specific capacity limitations.

May I tip the driver and guide? Is it obligatory?

Although not obligatory, it's standard practice in Mexico, and for many of our visitors is a form of thanks on finishing the excursion, always when the service and attention of these professionals have been as expected or has surpassed your expectations.

But we repeat, this is NOT OBLIGATORY.

Can people with disabilities participate in the excursion?

Our existing itineraries are not specifically designed for travelers with disabilities, but that doesn’t mean you will not be able to enjoy one of our small group excursions – it’s largely dependent on your specific needs and the location you wish to visit.

Some destinations are better suited for travelers with disabilities than others. Many destinations we visit lack accessible public infrastructure or facilities designed to accommodate travelers with disabilities, but we will do our best to arrange suitable alternatives where possible.

You may also prefer to speak to our Customer Service and arrange a customized itinerary to suit your needs.

The price for the photo package depends on the group size of your booking. For 2 persons the package is $66 USD and for 6 persons the package is $106 USD. Private Tours have different pricing depending on your group size  and tour.

Can I take my (underwater) camera to the excursion?

You are free to take your own photos or video on tour with us, but we ask, while snorkeling, that your equipment is attached to your body in one way or another, for example with a wrist band. We do however not advise that you take your phone in a waterproof case, because it is generally not possible to operate it whilst doing the activities. Can I pay for a reservation in someone else’s name?

Yes. For your protection and security, we will request a copy of your identification and a copy of the credit card with which you made the payment. You can send this by email to [email protected] or we will ask for it when you board our tour.

I think I made the payment, but I do not receive your confirmation. What should I do?

Usually, if confirmation does not arrive, first: Look first in your UNWANTED email folder (SPAM), if you do not find our confirmation in that folder, you probably have misplaced/misspelled your email. In this case, contact us and we will help you solve it.

What if the trip I have my heart set on is sold out?

Sometimes, it happens that our tours are sold out. Especially during high seasons and holidays. Just because a tour is sold out doesn’t mean you are out of options for taking the trip of your dreams. If we can make it happen, we will. Please call our Customer Service at +52 984 206 1444. They will try to accommodate your request or let you know about newly added departure dates that might work with your schedule.

Change or cancel your travel plans up to 24 hours before departure, with no fees.  Cancellation requests made within 24 hours of the departure date/time may not receive a refund.

They will be able to help you arrange the perfect trip for your group, regardless of size.

15 Facts About Chichen Itza, One Of The 7 Wonders Of The World

  • Chichen Itza is a top cruise attraction, with many tourists visiting from nearby ports on organized tours.
  • Local vendors sell goods near Chichen Itza, although tourists should be prepared for potential persistence.
  • Chichen Itza was discovered twice and was used as an observatory by the Mayans. It is being restored and may have been used for sacrifices.

Chichen Itza is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and is a historic site situated in Yucatán, Mexico. While most people realize that Chichen Itza was built by the Mayans thousands of years ago, there are many things tourists don't realize about this marvelous attraction. There are many interesting facts about Chichen Itza that everyone should know before visiting.

Chichen Itza refers to an archeological site, not the pyramid within it, which is the site's most popular tourist attraction. The pyramid itself was built to serve as a temple and a castle and is known as El Castillo - there are a lot more facts about Chichen Itza that you may want to know about both the site and the pyramid before you visit.

There Is Much More To Understand When Coming To See Chichen Itza

This article has been updated with new information regarding Chichen Itza, as well as two lesser-known facts about this world-famous monument. Whether someone is coming from their cruise, shopping with locals, or wanting to learn more about this iconic structure, Mexico is filled to the brim with history and Mayan culture!

Chichen Itza Is One Of The Most Visited Cruise Attractions

  • Cruise passengers account for much of the tourism at Chichen Itza.

Something to know about Chichen Itza in Mexico is that it brings most of its tourists from cruise ships porting in nearby areas. Cozumel is a landing point for many cruisers, with them hopping on a bus to witness the ancient Mayan structure in real-time. For this reason, people will almost always have the option of booking a tour of the site via their cruise company, as it's continuously one of the most in-demand choices among people coming to the country. From water to Chichen Itza!

Guachimontones is another prehistoric site in Mexico worth checking out for anyone with time to spare on the mainland.

There Are Locals Selling Goods Near The Famous Monument

  • Local vendors line the streets entering Chichen Itza.

Although this sometimes doesn't sit well with tourists, there are hoards of vendors selling goods just hundreds of feet from Chichen Itza. Most people are fairly calm about selling to tourists, although it has been reported vendors bombarding buses filled with guests in the area, as well as flagging them down at the monument. It's best to say no thanks and move on from the area if this persists. Or, if you want a handcrafted gift, then supporting vendors is a great idea: whatever makes everyone feel most comfortable.

It Was Discovered Twice

  • Chichen Itza underwent two major discoveries, one in 514 AD and another in 1841.

One thing most people do not know about Chichen Itza is that it was discovered twice. In 514 AD, a priest by the name of Lakin Chan discovered the site that is known as Chichen Itza. It is believed that Chan was also referred to as Itzamna. Chichen Itza translates as “at the mouth of the well of the Itza.” Over the years following its abandonment, Chichen Itza was lost, and Mexico fell into turmoil and was ravaged by a series of wars. In 1841, American Explorer John Lloyd Stephens stumbled upon this site once again and turned it over to Mexico.

It Was Used As An Observatory

  • At one point, Chichen Itza was used as an observatory.

The Chichen Itza is a marvelous site due to its rich architecture and historical value, but it also houses evidence that the Mayans were definitely ahead of their time. For starters, the Chichen Itza housed craftspeople, artisans, and scholars and was by no means a civilization of simple people. The Mayans were people of science and math and especially excelled in the field of astronomy. For this reason, tourists can visit the Mayan observatory known as El Caracol, which once was used by the Mayans to gaze into the heavens and study the motions of Venus.

It's Built With Diverse Materials

  • The pyramids of Chichen Itza have been made with local materials, such as mica.

The pyramids of Chichen Itza have been a popular attraction for ages, but now they are being questioned, or rather, the method in which they were built. Historians have analyzed the buildings and structures located within this site and have found a variety of diverse materials that do not originate locally in Yucatan, Mexico . One of these materials is mica, which was used by the Mayans during construction to insulate their buildings, but there is one problem. Mica is found 2,000 miles away from the pyramids in Brazil, and scientists are baffled as to how it was transported without vehicles.

It Was Built Near Sinkholes

  • This structure was built near sinkholes, often believed to be used for human sacrifice.

Another thing most people do not know about Chichen Itza is that it was built near sinkholes. While your first reaction to reading that might be confusion or worry, there was a very good reason for the Mayans establishing their community near two sinkholes. The area is generally spotted with numerous sinkholes in the limestone earth and is stable. They actually provided the only source of freshwater to the people of the area as there are no rivers or lakes nearby. Therefore, Chichen Itza was built near two massive sinkholes to ensure water availability year-round. These sinkholes are called cenotes and have clean water in them ( cenotes are also one of the top tourist attractions of the Yucatán Peninsula ).

It Is Being Restored

  • Many restoration projects have kept Chichen Itza looking beautiful after all these years.

One thing most people find surprising about the buildings in Chichen Itza, particularly El Castillo, is the incredible condition it is in after all these centuries. This is due to the restoration projects headed by the Mexican government and some universities to ensure these structures stand the test of time.

Restoration efforts began in 1923 when Sylvanus Morley, an archaeologist, headed an expedition to the pyramid and realized it had suffered a great deal of decay. After gaining entrance to the pyramid, restoration efforts were started and continue to this day; due to this, El Castillo is stronger than ever.

It May Have Been Used For Sacrifices

  • Many believe that sinkholes surrounding Chichen Itza were used for sacrifices during times of heartache.

Next up on this list is a morbid fact about Chichen Itza, which is not entirely butterflies and rainbows. The Mayans were peaceful and smart people but also believed in curses and sacrifice to the gods they worshiped. The sinkholes mentioned above were frequently used for sacrifices during times of adversity, such as a drought or famine. The Mayans would choose a person to be sacrificed to the gods in hopes that this would bring them luck. In addition to sacrifices, the Mayans were also big fans of death penalties, which were gruesome and publicized to maintain order and spread fear.

It Isn't Entirely Mayan

  • The Chichen Itza was built in two stages: the pre-Classic and the latter period.

Next up is a fact that startles most people when they hear it, and it truly is shocking. Historians suggest that this famous Mayan community may not have been entirely Mayan, and that is true. The Chechen Itza was built in two stages, the pre-Classic and the latter period. The pre-Classic period was greatly influenced by the Mayans, but following an invasion of Toltecs in the 10th century, this all changed. As a matter of fact, the most iconic buildings of Chichen Itza, such as the Temple Pyramid El Castillo, may have been built by the Toltecs and not the Mayans.

There Are Smaller Pyramids Within

  • There is a smaller pyramid cluster hiding below the El Castillo.

Another fact to know about Chichen Itza is that while the huge pyramid of El Castillo looms at a whopping 98 feet , it is, in fact, hiding something beneath it. Within the pyramid are two smaller pyramids that stand at 65.5 feet and 33 feet. The smallest of the three pyramids is believed to have been built by the Mayans, as it features a unique Colombian-style architecture style. In contrast, the other pyramids have Mexican influences in them. Scientists are studying the smaller pyramid to learn more about the ways of the Mayans, as the ways of the Toltecs are shown on El Castillo with its carvings and sculptures.

There Was A Death At The Itza

  • Tourists in modern times are not permitted to climb or even touch Chichen Itza.

Tourists at the Chichen Itza are frequently disappointed to know that they cannot climb to the top of the pyramid, and here is why. Until 2006 , tourists were allowed to climb to the top of El Castillo to gaze upon the sculptures at the top. That was until an American tourist stumbled on her way down and fell to her death. These accidents are increasingly common, and for this reason, the steps of El Castillo are restricted. In addition to providing an added layer of safety to tourists, this ensures the structure will not be damaged by the feet of hundreds of thousands of tourists climbing the steps.

That said, this Mayan pyramid in Mexico DOES allow climbing , so that's something to think about.

Chichen Itza's Glory Declined Mysteriously

  • The Mayans are said to have vanished sometime around the 14th century.

This once great empire met its sudden doom when the Mayans who once inhabited this land mysteriously left in the 14th century and never returned to it once again. The Chichen Itza was a symbol of perseverance and power to the Mayans, who had moved around, ravaged by warfare until settling in the Itza. Their civilization was one of the most advanced of its time. Still, it met its sudden end due to a series of issues, such as drought and famine. After the fall of Chichen Itza, the Mayans persevered in the North till the 16th century.

Chichen Itza Has The Largest Mayan Ballcourt

  • Chichen Itza is home to the largest Ballcourt known in Mesoamerica.

Much is not known about the Mayan Ballgame, but it would seem that for the Mayans, the game was more ritual in nature. The game was associated with human sacrifice, and the exact rules remain unknown (except it would seem players could only use their hips and thighs. Chichen Itza is home to the largest Ballcourt known in Mesoamerica .

Chichen Itza Has A Sacrificial Cenote

  • There is a sacred cenote at Chichen Itza, where sacrifices occur.

At Chichen Itza, visitors can find the Sacred Cenote . It is an ancient sinkhole that the Mayans believed was sacred. Numerous artifacts have been discovered at the bottom of this cenote, including things associated with sacrifice, like gold, jade, incense, and human bones. The human skeletons include warriors, children, and maidens. Also, at Chichen Itza, visitors can see the Mayan baths where sacrificial victims were ritually cleaned before their sacrifice.

Chichen Itza Is One Of The Most Touristic Mayan Sites

  • Chichen Itza remains one of the most popular Mayan sites in the world.

Chichen Itza is not only one of the most popular archeological sites in Mexico, but it is also likely the most popular Mayan archeological site in all of the ancient Mayan world. It is far from the only ancient Mayan city to have impressive ruins. Still, it is one of the most accessible and best known, and it benefits from being in Mexico (Tikal is remote in the jungle in Guatemala). Chichen Itza attracts around 2 million tourists every year.
