Tour de Romandie 2024 overview
The Tour de Romandie used to be one of the key warm-up races for both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France due to its abundance of time trialling kilometres and high-altitude climbs. The race started back in 1947, and every year the course traverses the French-speaking Romandie region in the west of the country.
This time around, only a few of the big stars are starting both the Tour de Romandie and Giro d’Italia, namely Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step), Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers) and Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla). But the teams of UAE Team Emirates , Bora-Hansgrohe and Lidl-Trek are all bringing star-studded rosters to the race.
The defending champion, Adam Yates , will be back to lead UAE Team Emirates, supported by a team including Juan Ayuso and Brandon McNulty , whilst Giulio Ciccone and Tao Geoghegan Hart will continue their respective recoveries in Switzerland. Geoghegan Hart is looking to trend towards becoming a Grand Tour contender once more, whereas Ciccone will be making his first appearance of the season after suffering from saddle sores.
Beginning with a prologue on Tuesday 23 April, the Tour de Romandie will feature one short individual time trial and two summit finishes before the race is decided on Sunday 28 April.

An overview of this year's Tour de Romandie
The Tour de Romandie used to be a happy hunting ground for the GC riders whose best asset was their time trialling, as evidenced by the victories of Cadel Evans and Bradley Wiggins in the past. This is no longer the case, with the race containing less than 20km against the clock this year.
With just a 2.3km prologue and a 15.5km individual time trial, the 2024 Tour de Romandie will most likely be decided in the mountains. The two defining days look to be stages 2 and 4, both ending with summit finishes and tasking the riders with plenty of climbing throughout the day. Stage 4 is the Queen stage, standing at just 151.2km but including 3,509m of climbing before a summit finish in Leysin.
The climbs in Switzerland are often long but consistent, with stage 4 ending on a 15km-long climb that averages 5.9% and remains at a similar gradient throughout its duration. Similarly, stage 2’s summit finish up to Les Marécottes will be slightly shorter at 8km, but averages a reliable 7.3%.
Aside from the two mountain stages and two tests against the clock, stage 1 between Château-d’Oex and Fribourg looks to be a rolling test that could suit a breakaway and the final day, beginning and ending in Vernier, looks certain to end in a sprint finish.
Tour de Romandie 2024 contenders
Only 17 riders on the current Tour de Romandie start list will be racing the Giro and of those 17, a few may be challenging for the final podium in both races.
Luke Plapp of Jayco AlUla has found success in week-long stage races in the past, but may struggle over the three weeks of the Giro. Alternatively, Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla) and Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers) may shine brightest in Italy, but can all be included in the list of contenders for a strong result in Switzerland.
Tour de Romandie 2024 top 10 contenders
Egan Bernal
Brandon McNulty
Jai Hindley
Aleksandr Vlasov
Thymen Arensman
Richard Carapaz
Tao Geoghegan Hart
David Gaudu
Elsewhere, there are a plethora of teams bringing multiple GC options to the Tour de Romandie, promising a tantalising showdown between the top WorldTour outfits in the peloton. Ineos Grenadiers will have Arensman and Egan Bernal working in unison, Bora-Hansgrohe brings Aleksandr Vlasov , Jai Hindley and Sergio Higuita , whilst Lidl-Trek feature Tao Geoghegan Hart and Giulio Ciccone .
Perhaps the outstanding team, however, are the defending champions UAE Team Emirates , who count last year’s winner Adam Yates , Spain’s Juan Ayuso and American’s Brandon McNulty amongst their number, not to mention the winner of a stage at the recent Giro d’Abruzzo, Pavel Sivakov . The riders in white will certainly be the most favoured heading into the race, with Yates the most probable to take his chance at leadership in the absence of Tadej Pogačar .
Meanwhile, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Enric Mas (Movistar) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) will all show face but are unlikely to challenge for the final top three. It is Carapaz who will be most likely to break into the top group of contenders, with the Ecuadorian showing splendid form at Liège-Bastogne-Liège and out to prove that his team should support a GC bid at this summer’s Tour de France.
Teams of Tour de Romandie 2024
At this year’s Tour de Romandie, although the likes of UAE Team Emirates, Ineos Grenadiers and Bora-Hansgrohe will reserve much of the attention at the start of the race, there are a whole host of teams ready to take the bull by the horns. On the start list will be all 18 UCI WorldTeams and five UCI ProTeams, all of whom you can find below.

Tour de Romandie race history
Traditionally, this race has started with a short prologue before sending the riders into the high mountains. Many editions have also finished with another, slightly longer individual time trial to decide the final GC. Therefore, it’s an event that favours the GC riders who are also gifted time trialists, like Primož Roglič and Chris Froome – both two-time winners of this race. That’s not to say the race only favours time trial specialists, quite the contrary in fact.
Over the past decade, both Ilnur Zakarin (2015) and Nairo Quintana (2016) have won this race, two riders that are renowned for their poor time trialling abilities. Over the last 15 years, three winners of the Tour de Romandie – Cadel Evans, Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome – have gone on to win the Tour de France in the same year, emphasising just how important this race can be for those riders with their eyes set on a yellow jersey come July.
No nation has managed to dominate this race over its 75 editions. Italy sits on top of the winners list with 13 wins, but Switzerland lie close behind on 12. Two of Switzerland’s most accomplished riders, Hugo Koblet and Ferdi Kübler, find themselves near the top of the stage winners list with eight apiece. But again it’s Italy that tops this particular list courtesy of Mario Cipollini who won 12 stages during his long career.
The Irishman, Stephen Roche, holds the record for the most overall titles with three, but the race’s 2018 and 2019 winner, Primož Roglič, lies ominously close behind on two. Roglič isn’t down to ride this year’s race, so Roche’s record is safe for at least another 12 months. The defending champion Adam Yates is though, and there’s a good chance that he could repeat his result from last year and join Roglič on two career wins.

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.
Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.
Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.
The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.
Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.

At last weekend’s Tour de Romandie , Carlos Rodríguez continued to show that he is Ineos’ top GC option , taking the overall victory at the six-stage race through the French-speaking region of Switzerland with an incredibly patient and balanced performance that saw him best a start list packed with big-name GC talents.
The race, in addition to giving third-place Florian Lipowtiz a platform to ride his way onto Bora’s Giro d’Italia squad (at the expense of a very-upset Emanuel Buchmann), held quite a few interesting data points about where some of the major contenders for the 2024 Tour de France stand and gave us a preview of the battle to challenge Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, and Remco Evenepoel come July.

2.3km-to-go: Heading into the key final portion of the race’s first uphill finish, and with the remnants of the early breakaway dangling just 30 seconds up the road, Luke Plapp, who is just 24 seconds out of the race lead, attacks. Bora’s Florian Lipowitz is the only rider who follows.
1.5km: Plapp, with Lipowitz on his wheel, quickly closes the gap to the leaders. But, instead of blowing past them, as you would expect from a GC rider who has attacked late to the early breakaway on the final climb, the group stays together as Plapp sets a pace on the front.
400m: Despite needing as much time as possible for his GC hopes, Plapp eventually pulls off the front of the group to position himself for the sprint/attack. Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R) takes the front, while Lidl-Trek’s Thibau Nys smartly slots into second wheel.
300m: Plapp attacks the group from surprisingly far out, while Nys, playing the role of the savvy veteran at just 21 years old, pushes around Vendrame to follow while looking like he is more than comfortable at this pace.
Finish: Nys comes by Vendrame to win the stage and take the first WorldTour wins of his career, while Plapp, who faded slightly, slots into a strong GC position due to his time gains over the rest of the contenders. Lipowitz comes in ten seconds later and moves up the GC ladder, while his teammate Vlasov leads home the peloton four seconds later.
5km: On the final climb of the final mountain stage, Ineos, who has Carlos Rodríguez sitting in 4th place overall, 11 seconds behind race leader Juan Ayuso following the Stage 3 ITT, has Egan Bernal soft-attack off the front to stress-test the rest of the GC contenders after they have set a hard, consistent pace on the climb. Ayuso initially attempts to follow but, after struggling to hold his teammate’s wheel, looks back to see where the rest of the GC contenders are. After realizing the rest of the group can’t respond, Rodríguez jumps out of the bunch to join his teammate (some might have viewed this as chasing down his own teammate, but with Bernal so far back in the GC after the TT, Ineos is committed to Rodríguez as their lone GC hope at this point).
3.9km: Once on the wheel of Bernal, Rodríguez sits back as his teammate shreds the race leader, who appears to be under significant pressure at this point. Also, notice how solid Rodríguez (in second wheel) is on his bike while the rest are rocking and rolling.
2.2km: After Lipowitz pulls an elite group clear, Richard Carapaz, who entered the stage just over a minute behind Rodríguez, attacks.
1.4km : With Ayuso and the rest of the GC contenders dropped, Carapaz, who has a 43-second gap on the two chasers, appears to be away not just for the stage win but a surprise overall title.
300m: However, Rodríguez, fully understanding what he has to do, sets a hard pace to close the gap to Carapaz as they head into the final 500 meters. Lipowitz, sensing a chance for a stage win, attacks in pursuit of the leader.
150m: Carapaz, who has slowed down significantly and seen his lead evaporate, is being hotly pursued by a surging Lipowtiz as he enters the final few hundred meters.
Finish: Carapaz holds off a flying Lipowitz to win the stage, while the young German moves up into third place overall despite narrowly missing out on the stage win. Behind, Rodríguez moves into the race lead and all but wraps up overall victory after finishing tens of seconds in arrears of the winner but ahead of his GC rivals.
1) Carlos Rodríguez & Ineos: The 23-year-old Spaniard proves his fifth place at last year’s Tour de France was no fluke by netting his first career GC victory against an incredibly deep field of major stage racing talents.
- This is particularly important since getting priority at Ineos as a non-British rider can be difficult, and this result comes at a time when Ineos’ other options, like Geraint Thomas, have been off the pace at lower-level stage races.
- It was refreshing to see a young rider execute an overall victory with a measured and balanced week-long performance in an age of long-range all-out attacks.
- After a dreadful season start, Ineos has won four races, including three at the WorldTour level, in the last three weeks.
2) Juan Ayuso & UAE: For the second straight year, the 21-year-old Ayuso left the time trial at Romandie in pole position only to fade in the final few stages.
- Since consistency is a trait that is somewhat untethered from age and experience, this is something to note regarding his future Grand Tour contending potential.
- This trend could mean nothing, but with the team struggling to offer line-to-line support for Pogačar at recent Grand Tours, this is something to keep an eye on as they enter the brutal gauntlet of the Giro/Tour double.
3) Unknowns Surge as Big Names Struggle to Hold Pace: As the previously 23-year-old German Florian Lipowitz rode his way onto his Bora’s team Giro d’Italia roster with an incredible ride to finish third place overall, plenty of big-name stars, like Enric Mas, Jai Hindley, and both Simon and Adam Yates, finished off the podium and left major question marks about their status heading into the key portion of the season before the Tour de France.
- For example, Adam Yates won the overall at this race last year before finishing third at the Tour de France two months later, and the fact that he was significantly further behind at the same point in the season in 2024 could signal that it will be tough for him to match that performance this summer, and could leave the door open for a relative outsider to potentially snag a Tour de France podium spot.

The UCI WorldTour calendar has now been bringing together the world’s finest cycling races, including the Tour de Romandie, for several years. The biggest stage races—in particular, the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España—as well as the most prestigious one-day events, such as Paris-Roubaix or Il Lombardia, are also part of this calendar.
The quality of the sporting show is guaranteed by the participation of the best teams—and, therefore, the best riders—in the 37 events of the UCI WorldTour. The UCI WorldTeams, who are carefully selected according to ethical, financial, administrative, organisational and, above all, sporting criteria, participate in all the events on this calendar, which is an international circuit with individual and team classifications.
Thanks to the quality of its organisation and its strategic position in the calendar, the Tour de Romandie attracts the biggest riders.

Tour de Romandie 2022: GC Favourites
[Underneath article was written before the start of the Tour de Romandie and has not been updated]
The Tour de Romandie used to be the last big test ahead of the Giro d’Italia, but those days are gone. There are zero GC riders who opt for the Tour de Romandie/Giro double this year. Most Giro contenders were active on the last week’s Tour of the Alps.
The Tour de Romandie kicks into gear with a prologue, which will surely open up some time gaps, as will the punchy finish of stage 2. Yet, in terms of the GC battle the last two days of actions are expected to be crucial.
Saturday’s Queen Stage takes in five climbs and an elevation of 4,160 metres. The last climb is 6.2 kilometres long and averages 7.1%, but the top is not the end of the stage. Still 7 kilometres to go, partly on descent, party uphill at moderate gradients.
The last day seems to be designed to put the GC upside down. It’s an ITT with a flat opening of 5.9 kilometres before the riders tackle a 9.9 kilometres climb with an average gradient of 8%. Uphill finish, this time.
Title holder Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome (2013, 2014) are the only former winners on the start list.

'I surprised myself' - Luke Plapp grasps GC advantage ahead of Tour de Romandie TT
L uke Plapp may have been expected to start flexing his muscles on the overall at the Tour de Romandie in Friday's stage 3 time trial, but he decided not to wait. The Australian Jayco-AlUla rider grasped an opportunity to jump over to the break on Thursday's stage 2 finishing climb, carving out an advantage over key general classification rivals the day before the race against the clock, which had been earmarked pre-race as the stage he would be targeting.
Plapp's third place finish on the 171km stage – behind Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) and Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) – also put him in third place overall.
“It was a bit of an interesting day to be honest, with the break, nobody knew which team was going to ride, there was a bit of a standoff,” said Plapp in a team media statement. “Then it was quite controlled and that last climb, I surprised myself to be honest. I didn’t expect that.”
Plapp may not have planned the stage 2 attack, which came at a little over 2km to go, but once the chance arose he capitalised on it. The 23 year old rode away with Florian Lipowitz (Bora Hansgrohe) initially on his wheel but he was alone by the time he had bridged to the remainder of the break.
“Simon [Yates] did an amazing attack into the final that sort of softened everybody up, so I just tried to take my opportunity,” said Plapp of the one, two punch delivered by the team on the hilltop finish to Les Marécottes.
The opening technical 2.3km prologue had pulled out some early time gaps among the overall contenders, and with Plapp at 17 seconds back from the winner of the stage he had been a little in arrears of some of his key rivals given riders like Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) managed to hold the gap to around seven seconds. That, however, changed on Thursday when Plapp crossed the line 12 seconds ahead of the group of chasing favourites and claimed a four second time bonus as well when he finished on the podium behind Nys and Vendrame.
The two riders who beat Plapp on stage 2 are now the only ones ahead of him on the overall ranking, though they seem unlikely to remain there through stage 3's race against the clock. Ilan van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) is behind Plapp in fourth on the general classification – three seconds back from the Australian road race and time trial champion – while Enric Mas (Movistar), Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ), Ayuso and Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) are all within six seconds of the Jayco-AlUla rider.
Friday’s 15.5km time trial in Oron is likely to deliver another big reshuffle, one that could even give Plapp – who rode in yellow at Paris-Nice for three days last month before finishing sixth – a chance to give another leader's jersey a test run.
“I am happy with my shape, and we will see how tomorrow goes,” said Plapp. “TT is my favorite event in the world, I can’t wait, it is going to be a fun day for me.”

Tour de Romandie: Maikel Zijlaard wins prologue from early start on dry course
Cameron Scott second with Julian Alaphilippe completing podium in Payerne
Tudor Pro Cycling's Maikel Zijlaard put in the best performance of his career, powering to his first WorldTour victory in the 2.3km prologue of the Tour de Romandie .
Zijlaard started early in the day before intermittent drizzle made the city circuit in Payern treacherous.
Australian Cameron Scott (Bahrain Victorious), one of the last riders to start, managed to keep the bike upright and come within a second of the Dutchman but was unable to kick him out of the hot seat.
Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quickstep) finished third just over two seconds behind Zijlaard.
Zijlaard's previous best result this year was seventh place at Nokere Koerse and he surpassed his expectations with the victory.
"It's crazy - I can't believe it," he said. "I started quite early, and the last two hours have been the worst two hours of my life because of the stress. I wanted this so much for myself for the team. It's super nice to show that we are capable of doing stuff like this and it's a super team.
"I know I'm quite good at this stuff, so I was going in here with a goal which was the prologue. It's quite hard to believe but it's reality and I'm really happy.
"I don't really have the words. To win here in my first road to victory for a Swiss team in Switzerland - it's a bit of a dream."
How it unfolded
Maikel Zijlaard (Tudor Pro Cycling), nephew to ex-pros Michael and Leontin Zijlaard Van Moorsel, set the fastest early time, eclipsing the likes of Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek) in the violent 2.3 kilometre prologue.
Zijlaard went three seconds quicker than early starter Dorion Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and withstood a huge effort from Julian Alaphillippe (Soudal-Quickstep), who went 2.3 seconds slower.
Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) was keen to try to win the prologue but almost crashed twice and lost all chances before the line, coming just 15 seconds shy after coming to a near stop.
A bit of drizzle fell on the later starters, making the twisting, turning course in Payern slippery and forcing riders to take caution, but Cameron Scott (Bahrain-Victorious) managed to come within one second of Zijlaard's time, pushing Alaphilippe into third.
Of the overall contenders, Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ), Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Ayuso finished six to seven seconds down, defending Tour de Romandie champion Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) was eight seconds down, Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) at nine seconds, with the rest over 10 seconds behind.
