The definition for a private tour is an itinerary run exclusively for you and your family or friends. On a private trip, everybody you travel with will be somebody you know. Private tours are more flexible when it comes to your group size, travel dates and what your trip includes.

What is the difference between public and private tours?

Public tours run on scheduled dates, whereas a private tour can depart on any date that suits you. Anyone can join a private tour, whereas a private tour is exclusively just you and your friends or family. Guests are often pleasantly surprised that Classic Journeys can offer a private departure for less than you would pay for another company’s standard tours. In some cases, we can even offer a private departure for less than you would pay for other companies’ standard tours. The starting point—the published price of a Classic Journeys public tour—is lower than what many companies charge for their comparable tours.

How long is a private tour?

A long weekend tour can be three or four days, while a round-the-world trip might take several months! The best thing about private tours is that they can be completely planned around how long you want to travel. Let us know the duration that works best for you, and we’ll create an amazing itinerary to fill it.

How are custom tours created?

Classic Journeys is relatively unique in that we work with local guides and hoteliers in the region that you’re planning to visit. Once you’ve told us your wish list, our Tour Operations team get to work, brainstorming with our own team of local guides to handcraft your itinerary for you.

Can I choose the destination for my private tour?

Yes, all private tours are led by our local guides, who live in the destination you’re visiting and have better insider knowledge than anyone. If you want to explore independently on some days, we can incorporate this into your itinerary

We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. I hired All Japan Tours to organize the art tour which I curated. We worked on it for two years as this was a complicated trip with a lot of different locations, strict schedule, private viewing, and everything had to be on the highest level of hotels and food. The guide and bus driver were exceptional.

Everything about the tour was amazing! Our guide Miharu was a very big part of making the tour so fantastic. Her knowledge, guidance, assistance, storytelling, friendliness -- I can go on and on, and especially her humor and comedic skills had us all laughing and wanting more. She never failed to have an answer to our questions. Driver Harada-san was also so accommodating and pleasant to have as our driver -- he had the softest hands! I loved all the "hand on" activities - doing bonsai, woodcarving, making kamaboko, making tatami, dancing. It was also so special that Miharu was able to have the beautiful Japanese singer fly in just to entertain us on the bus. That was so special and I'm sure something that is not done for all tours.

Forced shopping or other activities

Unlike our group DMZ tours with no forced shopping , group tours often include a mandatory shopping stop. This is included to offset the tour cost and bring down the cost of the tour participation fee. 

While this isn’t an issue for most people as it usually just involves a quick stop on the way to or from an experience, bargain bucket tour companies can take this to another level. 

Therefore, you should be aware of group tours that offer considerably lower prices than their competition as you may spend a lot more time shopping, or even worse be subject to hard selling.     

You will have to share transportation with other travellers

Group tours usually start by going around and picking up other fellow travellers before the tour starts and then include numerous stops on the way back. In addition, waiting for others to return to the bus at the agreed meeting time can be frustrating for some when you are ready to move on.

If you find yourself frustrated by these small inefficiencies, then a group tour is not for you. It is also one of the significant advantages of booking a private tour, so you may wish to consider that option.

We were originally scheduled for our 20th Anniversary in September 2020...but of course that was canceled so Happy 21st it is! Alex helped us each step of the way. Massimo of Sicily Activities was wonderful to work with. He always answered right away, and took care of EVERYTHING throughout the trip--even things that weren't strictly part of the tour. We were a private group of 15. PALERMO: The hotel was wonderful and Fabrizio was a great guide for the food tour. Luca was a great driver to Monreale and Cefalu'. Larisa was a good guide for the Monreale cathedral and Lisabeta in Cefalu' was fantastic--and the restaurant was, too. Claudio, our driver to Agrigento and Siracusa was excellent. The guide at Valley of the Temples was good. An amazing place. SIRACUSA: The hotel was lovely and in a great location. Both guides in Ortigia were great--Valerio for the walking tour and Paolo for the foodie dinner--what a fun man. Paolo, the driver to Noto, Villa Romana del Casale and Taormina was fantastic. Saro was an excellent guide in Noto and Mt Etna. Lunches in both Noto and Piazza Amerina were delicious. Patrizia, the guide for Villa Romana, was wonderful, especially when we needed an ambulance for one of the women to go to the hospital. And dear Massimo even arranged a taxi for me from the hospital back to Siracusa (about an hour and half away). The driver was the nicest man! TAORMINA: Another very nice hotel. Our guide for the walking tour was really good. She was patient as we were a little late getting ready to start the tour, but she still took us to the Greek Theatre in the rain and wind. The tour to Mt Etna was fabulous--both the tasting and the lunch. Massimo even arranged a pizza-making class when weather prevented us from going on our scheduled boat ride. In summary, there was nothing Massimo could have done better. And this is at a time when all the tour directors were overwhelmed with bookings. He was a standout!

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

• As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
• Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
• Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options. 

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

There are large group tours by bus that cost a lot less than a private tour. DIY trips are a lot cheaper, simply because you are not paying for someone else's expertise. A small group might suit your travel style, but you need to do your research. Be aware that some "small" groups are over 20 people! For me that is huge.

Bon Jovi docuseries allows peek at band's private history

LONDON (Reuters) - Rockers Bon Jovi open up about their 40-year career in the new docuseries "Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story".

In the four-part show, archival footage and personal videos and photos are intertwined with present-day interviews and scenes of the group embarking on their 2022 tour. It documents the American band's rise in the early 1980s and the sharp learning curve they faced as they progressed from playing Jersey Shore clubs to stadiums around the world.

"We didn't want to create a vanity piece here. It's been a hell of a journey. With any true career, especially when you're talking about 40 years, there's going to be the peaks and the valleys. And we wanted to be honest about it," frontman Jon Bon Jovi said at the series' premiere in London on Wednesday.

"It's us pulling the curtain back on the band, individually and collectively," added keyboardist David Bryan.

In contrast to their heady days, the show also lets audiences in on more vulnerable moments, including Jon Bon Jovi's struggles with his singing due to a condition known as vocal fold atrophy.

"He (Jon) was thinking initially of just like this retrospective, looking back at the 40 years. I started to notice that something was going on with his voice. And I thought, 'That's interesting. Let's follow that,'" director Gotham Chopra, who is known for his documentaries about elite athletes, said.

"It ultimately ended up as a four-part series that tracks, of course, the 40-year odyssey, but also really this journey he's been on for the last two years to get back onto the stage."

Chopra and his team interviewed the band members, including former guitarist Richie Sambora, and their managers and collaborators from over the years, and combed through vast amounts of footage.

"Jon is a hoarder, as I've learned. He had collected stuff. There was also just tons of media archive. These guys exploded in the '80s, and the rise of MTV, VH1, there was just so much material," said Chopra.

"For us to see it, it was awesome. And the amount of stuff we did was awe-inspiring and I'm like, 'Well, that's why we're tired,'" said Bryan of watching the series.

Jon Bon Jovi said he was happy with the outcome.

"I think that the legacy matters. We were always very proud of what we were doing. And we wanted to be remembered in a certain way and we've worked for that."

Four decades on, Bon Jovi still has a lot to give, the 62-year-old singer said. The group's 16th studio album, "Forever," will be out in June.

"I think it's the best record we've made in 20 years," he said, adding he was not thinking about touring - for now.

"One day at a time. Let's just enjoy tonight and get the album out and work towards getting back out there."

"Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story" premieres on Disney+ in the UK and on Hulu in the United States on April 26.

One dead, 11 others injured after shuttle bus plows into group near Honolulu cruise port

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - One person is dead, and 11 others were injured Friday when a shuttle bus driver dropping off passengers near a Honolulu cruise ship terminal hit the gas instead of the brake, pinning several people against concrete barriers, first responders said.

Honolulu EMS said 68-year-old Dianna Cricelli from Pocahontas, Illinois, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and police traffic investigators confirmed she later died. There were four others who were seriously injured: Her husband Frank Cricelli, 66, a 67-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman, and a 58-year-old man.

Diana’s husband, Frank, said, “The family is mourning the loss of Dianna. They are asking for privacy during this difficult time.”

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii said the four others who were seriously injured are also from Illinois and that they are being offered assistance.

Additionally, a man in his 70s was taken to the hospital in stable condition while six other adults, ranging in age from their 40s to their 70s, suffered minor injuries and declined transport.

Multiple EMS units with paramedics and EMTs responded to the scene at Pier 2 about 10:20 a.m.

Honolulu police said the incident happened in a private parking lot when a 57-year-old driver dropping people off and picking others up was notified that his vehicle was moving forward. He jumped into the driver’s seat to stop it, but pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

Florida ER nurse Janet Lightfoot, on a cruise with her mom, jumped into action to help.

The two had just disembarked Friday morning and were waiting for a shuttle to go shopping when they saw a bus with a Hilo Hatties logo heading toward a crowd of people.

“Somebody screamed, and then I looked over and the bus hit into the crowd,” she said.

“It just kept going until it hit the wall there. Big cement block was pushed out and the bus hit into the wall. I ran over and kind of started triaging people and trying to help.”

Lightfoot said she’s accustomed to seeing traumatic injuries, but “this is just different.”

“We’re on vacation. The husband of one of the family members was there and just sad.”

Bystanders said the chaotic scene unfolded in seconds.

“It was shocking,” said witness Mike Frost.

Added Linda Reck, also visiting from Florida, “It just kept going and and my daughter yells out, ‘There’s nobody driving the bus.’ And then poof, it hits the wall.”

Honolulu police said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol are factors in the crash.

Carnival Miracle issued the following statement about the incident:

Nine Carnival Miracle guests were hit by a shuttle bus in the transportation area outside the Honolulu cruise terminal on Friday morning, April 12. Sadly, one guest has died from her injuries. She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover. Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones. Carnival Miracle is on a 15-day Carnival Journeys sailing that departed Long Beach, Calif. on April 6.
