About Smiths Falls Ontario

Historic downtown Smiths Falls

Smiths Falls is a town located within the bounds of Lanark County, just south of Ontario. The town has four lock systems that control the flow of what were once rapids on the Rideau River. This unique feature, and its location close to Ottawa , is why it was chosen as the home base for luxury houseboat rental company LeBoat. Smiths Falls received its name from Thomas Smyth, who founded the town back in 1786. The town flourished with the construction of the Rideau Canal and the lock system that helped manage the 36 ft (11 meter) drop that the Rideau River took as it flowed past Smiths Falls.

The introduction of the railway system in the 1850s helped connect Smiths Falls to major cities such as Kingston, Ottawa, and Toronto. The Eastern Ontario Railway Museum , which is located in the former Smiths Falls train station is now one of the most popular places to visit in the town.

What To Do In Smiths Falls Ontario

Smiths Falls is an exciting town. At under 10,000 residents, it’s a small town. But from the railway museum to the gorgeous beaches, and even the eye-opening Tweed factory, you’ll find things to do in Smiths Falls for just about everyone. Here are some of our favorites.

Heritage House Museum

Heritage House Museum in Smiths Falls Ontario

In the mid-1800s the town of Smiths Falls was filled with opportunity. Local entrepreneur Joshua Bates saw that opportunity and built two mills to help with the development on the Brockville and Ottawa Rail Company. He also built a magnificent and unique house in 1861 for his family and then settled in Smiths Falls.

Unfortunately, the industry did not work in Bates’ favor and his fortunes were never recouped. After Bates died in 1864, his house traded hands for a century before finally being purchased in 1977 to be transformed into a museum.

Today, the Heritage House Museum offers a glimpse back to the regal life of industrial pioneers of the 1800s. You can walk through the summer and winter kitchens, see where the work was done, and learn how wealthy families lived during that time.

Le Boat Rideau River Tours

Rideau River Cruise with Le Boat in Smiths Falls

Purchasing a luxury houseboat is out of the realm of most people. The maintenance and storage alone would have many people turning away. But LeBoat offers the chance for families to cruise the beautiful Rideau River. You can rent one and head off on a gorgeous river cruise touring between Ottawa and Kingston. The best part, Le Boat provides all the training! You don’t even need a boating license.

We toured with Le Boat and saw some of the scenery around Smiths Falls and absolutely fell in love with it. And with a kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms all on-board, you’ll have everything you need to experience the Rideau River for yourself. You can find out more about Le Boat here .

Watch The Sunset Over The Bascule Bridge

The Bascule Bridge is one of several National Historic sites in Smiths Falls. This unique structure is a perfect example of the ingenuity involved in creating moving bridges to accommodate Canada’s growing locomotive network. The Bascule Bridge was built between 1912 and 1913 in order to help the Canadian Northern trains cross the Rideau Canal while allowing the steamships moving up the river to access the towns.

Smiths Falls Railway Museum

Eastern Ontario Railway Museum Smiths Falls

The Smiths Falls Railway Museum is a must for families visiting Smiths Falls. This sprawling, 10-acre property encompasses the old Smiths Falls train terminal and houses loads of antique train engines, passenger cars, dining cars, and yes, even two authentic cabooses and an original dentist’s car that you can sleep in.

But these unique accommodations aren’t all that make the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario one of the coolest places to visit in Smiths Falls. The entire museum experience is like walking through one of the wildest restoration projects you can imagine.

If you’re looking for awesome places to stay in Smiths Falls, the Eastern Ontario Railway Museum even has three train cars that you can rent out on Airbnb . There are two cabooses, and one 1950s dental car that was used to offer service to communities in Northern Ontario. You can read all about our experience staying at the Smiths Falls Train Museum here .

Shop Historic Downtown Smiths Falls

Shopping lovers can rejoice. There are many great places for shopping in Smiths Falls. Whether you’re looking for local crafts, handmade clothing, antiques, or something else, historic downtown Smiths Falls is bound to deliver. Wander through the buildings and along the gorgeous streams and waterfalls as you take in the shops and restaurants in Smiths Falls. Some places to check off of your shopping list are: Arlie’s Book and Pearl’s Gem.

Along the way, you’ll pass some of Smiths Falls’ most historic buildings. Some of my favorites are the Town Hall at 77 Beckwith St. which dates back to 1859 and the East ill Wood’s Mill Complex at 34 Beckwith St. S. which dates back to 1880.

Learn To Fish With Peter Larmand Outdoors

Learning to Fish with Peter Larmand Outdoors in Smiths Falls

We were so lucky during our visit to Smiths Falls to have had the chance to meet up with Peter Larmand as he launched his brand new fishing camp for kids and families. There is some excellent fishing on the Rideau River and the lakes near Smiths Falls. Peter hooked us up with the gear and knowledge to start pulling in our own fish. In fact, we haven’t made a stop since our time with Peter where we didn’t do some fishing.

If you’re looking to learn about fishing or to help share a passion for angling with your kids, this Smiths Falls fishing camp is a great way to get started. You can learn more about this here .

Learn At The Rideau Canal Visitors Centre

Located on the edge of the Rideau River in a five-story 19th century stone mill, The Rideau Canal Visitors Centre is a wonderful spot to learn about this historic water route that winds its way from Ottawa to Kingston. If you’re planning on boating the Rideau Canal, this is where you should get your information. The helpful team can give you everything you need to know about the route and the best places to stop.

If you’re visiting Smiths Falls with kids, the Rideau Canal Visitors Centre also has a great children’s area and interactive exhibits that are fun for the whole family. You can learn more about this here .

Visit The Beach

Family Beach in Smiths Falls Ontario

The waterfront in Smiths Falls has some absolutely fantastic scenery. And this small town really knows how to do it right. The Smiths Falls beach is the place to be during the summer months. There are large bouncy playgrounds in the water and a kid-friendly beach that is perfect for families with younger children. Smiths Falls Beach is honestly one of our favorite beaches for families in Lanark County.

Take A Walk Along The Rideau Trail

The Rideau Trail is a walking and hiking route that covers over 387 km (240.5 miles) along the Rideau Canal. This epic hiking trail covers the distance between Ottawa and Kingston and winds through countless small towns such as Smiths Falls long the way. The Rideau Trail through Smiths Falls follows the waterfront through parks and splash pads, past the intricate lock system, and through the wooded glades along the Rideau Canal.

Learn About Modern Agriculture At Tweed

Tweed Visitors Centre in Smiths Falls

On the land that once housed the historic Hershey’s chocolate factory, an unlikely hero came to the rescue when the chocolate giant moved its production facility to Mexico . Tweed, one of the largest cannabis production companies in Canada filled the space and even expanded production and employment when laws around the famous weed were relaxed by the federal government.

But the Tweed Visitor Centre isn’t about the legacy of Cheech and Chong, this interactive and educational platform is being used to educate visitors and the local community about farming, production, and the medical benefits of cannabis. Come in with an open mind and you’ll learn a lot about modern agriculture and the changing medical landscape.

Explore the Town of Perth

Stewart Park in Perth Ontario

The town of Perth Ontario is one of the prettiest towns in Ontario. Although the vibe of the town might seem to cater to the older crowd, young families will love wandering through Stewart Park, paddleboarding on the Tay River, or splashing in the streams that cut through the town. Perth is about 15 minutes from Smiths Falls by car. If Perth is on your radar, you can check out our guide to Perth, Ontario here .

Wander Through The Mill of Kintail

Creek at the Mill of Kintail

The Mill of Kintail is one of the Wonders of Lanark County. This sprawling property contains as much history as it does natural beauty. Families will love ambling down the winding trails or splashing in the shallow waters of the Indian River. If you’d like a splash of culture with your visit, the mill itself houses the R. Tait Mackenzie Gallery. The collection of works by this world-renowned sculpture will blow you away.

On the main floor of the gallery is a museum dedicated to another local legend, the inventor of basketball.  James Naismith was a local boy who went on to world fame when he created this game that would soon be played around the world. The Mill of Kintail is a scenic 40-minute drive from Smiths Falls.

Taste The Lanark Chocolate Trail

Lanark County Chocolate Trail

Lanark County isn’t just known for delicious maple syrup. This county has some incredible chocolatiers and confectionaries. There’s no better cap to an amazing family adventure than by adding a little cocoa and sugar to the mix. So if you’d like to explore the Lanark County Chocolate Trail in Perth, Mississippi Mill, and Lanark, you can check out everything you need to know about the Lanark Chocolate Trail here .

Enjoy The River Walk In Almonte

Just 30 minutes from Smiths Falls is the beautiful river-side town of Almonte. Almonte has one of the best river walks in all of Lanark County. The walk trails along the Mississippi River (no, not THAT Mississippi River) past cascading waterfalls and historic buildings. Stop into one of the many great riverside restaurant patios to enjoy a meal with your view.

Visit The 5-Span Bridge in Packenham

About 15 minutes past Almonte is the town of Packenham. This tiny town has another of the Lanark County Wonders, the Packenham 5-span bridge. This bridge first caught my family’s attention years ago when we were taking some back roads on our way from Ottawa to Toronto. The magnificent stone design stands in perfect contrast to the gorgeous rocky waterfront. Here you’ll find lots of people stopping for a picnic or to take in a little bit of fishing.

Boomtown Fusion Eatery

If there was one restaurant in Smiths Falls that completely surprised us, it was Boomtown Fusion Eatery. One look at their menu shows a restaurant that has a huge selection. Ottawa Road Trips

Smiths Falls, Ontario: A guide for day trippers

Updated June 17, 2022.

Sure, lots of Canadian small towns have fallen on hard times in recent decades. But few have taken as many sucker punches as Smiths Falls has.

Back in 1950, it was a thriving place. The big Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) yards handled hundreds of trains a week, the CPR’s railway station restaurant was open around the clock, and the Frost & Wood Company made farm machinery for international clients. In 1963, the Hershey Company opened its first factory outside the U.S. in Smiths Falls, and the town’s RCA Victor plant pressed North America’s very first record featuring a little band called The Beatles.

glass door with gold letters reading "canadian northern telegraph office" opening onto old green office with wooden trim in background.

Then, everything changed.

The closure of Frost & Wood in 1955, after 116 years in operation, was an early warning sign. The CPR demolished most of the railway’s 29-stall roundhouse in the 1960s and finished the job in 1992. RCA Victor shuttered its plant at the end of the 1970s, and Hershey left town in 2008.

In addition, the Rideau Regional Centre for people with developmental disabilities closed in 2009, for completely understandable reasons—the government was shifting to helping people live more independently. Still, the closure was a blow to Smiths Falls’ economy; at one time, about 1,000 people worked at the centre.

At this point, some towns might have just called it a day. However, like the man in Chumbawamba’s song “Tubthumping,” Smiths Falls got knocked down, but it got up again. (In 2022, TV Ontario released a fascinating documentary about Smiths Falls’ rebound .)

Smiths Falls bounces back: Museums, hikes and festivals

The Rideau Regional Centre is slowly finding new life as a mixed business-residential-recreational development called the Gallipeau Centre (361 Queen Street).

Industrial history is also a key focus at the Rideau Canal Visitor Centre (34 Beckwith Street South). This three-storey space, housed in a 19th-century stone mill building, is more of a full-fledged museum than a simple visitor centre. Informative displays give you lots of insight into the history of the canal, and you should definitely check them out, but make sure to follow the signs to the top-floor observation room, too. It gives you a great view of the Rideau Canal, the locks and the town.

Museum fans can also check out the Heritage House Museum (11 Old Slys Road), located next to the Old Slys locks on the Rideau Canal. This 1861 wood-frame mansion now portrays the life of an upper middle-class 1870s family and illuminates the town’s history. It also hosts special events, such as a Halloween haunted house, art sales and Victorian-style teas.

If you want to catch a show while you’re in town, check out the website of the Station Theatre (53 Victoria Avenue). Housed in what was once the CPR station, the theatre opened in 2010 after an 11-year fundraising and renovation project. Today, it hosts movies, productions by the Smiths Falls Community Theatre troupe and other events.

Annual Smiths Falls festivals worth checking out include the Spirit of the Drum Powwow (June), the RISE Festival (June), Live at the Falls (August), Trainfest (August), Bustle on Russell (October) and the Celebration of Lights (December).

gravel trail bordered by purple flowers and trees with orange and yellow fall leaves.

Seeking some exercise? Smiths Falls is the beginning—or the end, depending on your point of view—of the Cataraqui Trail , yet another legacy of the town’s days as a railway hub. In 1997, the CNR donated this abandoned railway right-of-way to the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority. It is now a 104-kilometre recreational trail between Smiths Falls and Strathcona (near Napanee). In summer, it is open to hikers, cyclists and horseback riders; in winter, it becomes a snowmobiling and cross-country ski trail. The trailhead at the end of Ferrara Drive is one of several entry points in Smiths Falls.

When you need to refuel after all that exploring, the town also has great picnic spots near the Rideau Canal. They include Centennial Park (22 Confederation Drive) and Lower Reach Park (Old Slys Road at Jasper Avenue), which also has a splash pad, a play structure and other recreational amenities.

Shopping in Smiths Falls

Pop into the grandly named Michele’s Doorway to Splendour (10 Beckwith Street South) to browse for women’s fashions (such as bamboo items from Toronto-based Orange Fashion Village), skincare products from k’pure Naturals, purses and more.

Literature fans will find both new and used volumes, along with a selection of puzzles, at Arlie’s Books (14 Beckwith Street South).

Doting animal lovers can treat their fur babies to dog parkas and boots, cat and dog toys, gourmet chews, and more at Bone Appétit! Pet Company (1B Main Street East).

For Instagram-worthy items to freshen up your home—tea towels by Swedish artist Charlotte Nicolin, bath bombs and body lotions from local favourite Pink Soapworks, Sprig candles—and a wide selection of Fusion mineral paints for your DIY furniture projects, drop by Pearl’s Gem (7 Russell Street West).

Smiths Falls restaurants and food shops

First of all, I have to note that the local tourism office has been running some excellent promotions to draw visitors to Smiths Falls’ restaurants and bakeries. For instance, in summer 2020, it ran a program called Picnic Smiths Falls that made it easy for visitors to pre-order picnic lunches online from a variety of local eateries. All you had to do on arrival was pop by your chosen restaurant and pick up your box of goodies. What could be easier? Check the tourism bureau’s website (listed in the “If you go” section at the end of this post) for news of current promos. (Disclosure: For review purposes, I received a free picnic box from the Town of Smiths Falls, which neither reviewed nor approved this post.)

a small tart and a small cheesecake on a picnic table

I actually discovered C’est Tout Bakery (20 Beckwith Street North) through the picnic promotion, and I’m glad I did. It’s a great place for fresh sandwiches, soups, salads and baked goods of all descriptions—including house-made bread, bagels and doughnuts. (Try the raspberry-swirl cheesecake.) You can also get specialty coffees and teas made with local products.

A block away, The Pickled Pig (1 Chambers Street) specializes in charcuterie, deli meats and cheeses but also serves up all sorts of takeout treats, from sandwiches and cupcakes to sweet and savoury pies. You can pick up packaged goods from local makers, including preserves from Renfrew County’s Shamrock Gardens and mustards from Mrs. McGarrigle’s. The same building is also home to Sweet Scoops , source of yummy ice cream, cakes and other desserts.

Other food options include Shawarma on the Falls (16 Beckwith Street North), where the baklava alone is worth the stop; or Matty O’Shea’s Pub (16 Chambers Street), where you can shoot some pool or watch a hockey game while noshing on burgers, pizza or poutine.

Feeling thirsty? The 4 Degrees Brewing Company (275 Brockville Street) makes a range of beers with names evoking local stories. North of 7 and South of 7, for instance, reference nearby Highway 7. You can also try Frost & Wood ’55 or Old Slys ’69.

Local gem: Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario

As mentioned earlier, Smiths Falls was once a hopping railway hub, with multiple rail lines linking it to many communities in Ontario and Quebec. The first train—connecting Brockville to Smiths Falls—chugged through in 1859. At one point, the town had busy train stations for both the CPR and Canadian National Railway (CNR).

When the CNR station closed in 1979, a group of enterprising local train fans saved the 1912 building from demolition, renovated it and reopened it as the wonderful Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario (90 William Street West). It’s now a national historic site. If you’re a trainspotter, you’ll be in your element here, as you can wander through lovingly restored engines and rolling stock (don’t miss the railcar-turned-dentist’s-office), check out the reconstructed waiting room and telegraph office, and shop for rail-related souvenirs and books. During special events, you can even take a ride on one of the vintage trains.

Quirky story: Fort Hemlock

A red-brick building at 28 Beckwith Street South in downtown Smiths Falls looks completely ordinary—unless you happen to spot the stone on the second floor inscribed as follows: “Fort Hemlock, Erected 1868, Rebuilt by Jas Gould, 1877, Jus Vincit .” The Latin translates as “Justice Triumphs.” So what’s the story?

Accounts vary, but the gist seems to be that a man named Michael Carroll, who ran a grocery store in the adjacent building in the 1860s, used what was then a vacant lot to store supplies. The owner of the lot, one Jason Gould, took issue with that. To stake his claim to the lot, he built a small shack of hemlock wood. A mob knocked it down. The riot act was read. Like one of the Three Little Pigs, Gould rebuilt—this time, in brick. That building stands to this day—despite a possible plot to blow it up during its construction. A local wag nicknamed it Fort Hemlock, and the name stuck.

Smiths Falls is 78 kilometres southwest of Parliament Hill. To get there, head west on Highway 7, then south on Highway 15. The town is also one of the few in Eastern Ontario that you can reach from Ottawa on VIA Rail.

Cyclists (and really keen hikers) can get there largely off road by following the Great Trail from Ottawa, then picking up the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail in Carleton Place. Hikers can also follow the Rideau Trail from Ottawa to Smiths Falls. Boaters and paddlers, meanwhile, can get to Smiths Falls on the Rideau Canal.

If you want to stay overnight, check the map below for accommodations. (If you click a link on this map and book a place to stay, I’ll receive a small commission, which will help support this site—at no additional cost to you. Thank you!)

Rockets Starting Forward Nearly Falls Out of Top-20 Positional Rankings

  • Houston Rockets

Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr.'s career got off to a rough start, as he struggled out the gate as a rookie. Such was to be expected, as Smith was projected to be the first overall pick and fixated on landing in a specific spot, only to fall to third overall and wind up in a situation that he didn't expect.

There was a bit of an adjustment phase.

However, Smith closed the 2022-23 season out on a tear, averaging 14.6 points on 44.6 percent shooting and 7.6 rebounds per game after the All-Star break. Smith carried that over into the Summer League last season, where he averaged 35.5 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, helping the Rockets reach the title game.

Smith's second year saw him also struggle at the start of the season, as he was removed from Rockets coach Ime Udoka's closing lineups, in favor of Jeff Green on several occasions. Ultimately, the Rockets power forward put it together, finishing the year with averages of 13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds.

Smith's sophomore campaign was good enough to place him in HoopsHype's top 20 power forwards ranking, although he barely made the cut, finishing 18th.

The writer, Frank Urbina, explained his reasoning .

"Former No. 3 overall pick Jabari Smith didn’t make a huge jump in the 2023-24 season after a just-decent rookie year, at least not if you only look at the regular counting stats. But it was promising to see his advanced stats take a solid leap (-1.1 VORP to 1.0, -3.7 BPM to -0.4 and .037 WS/48 to .111), along with his three-point percentage (30.7 percent accuracy from deep 36.3 percent).

So the future remains bright for the 21-year-old Auburn product, who has elite defensive potential and a skillful offensive game, one that should allow him to space the floor, drive it, block shots and defend on switches for the Rockets."

Although Urbina didn't mention it, Smith's shooting splits were considerably better, as he shot 45.4 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from deep, 81.1 percent from the charity stripe, and 57.1 percent true shooting last season, in comparison to his splits as a rookie of 40.8 percent from the floor, 30.7 percent from long-range, and 78.6 percent from the foul line.

Smith will become eligible for a rookie extension after next season, which could put the franchise in a quandary, as Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green will also be up for extensions.

Breaking news, failed candidate makes history in canada with zero votes in federal election: ‘i am the true unity candidate’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Canadian man made history this week when he became the first candidate to fail to get a single vote in a contested federal election in the country.

Félix-Antoine Hamel, 45, received zero votes Monday after putting his name on the ballot in a recent Toronto-St. Paul’s by-election held in Toronto.

“When I saw the result, I was like, ‘Well, I am the true unity candidate. Everyone agrees not to vote for me,'” Hamel told CBC News.

He is the first federal candidate to get no votes in a contested race in Canada’s history.

While others have received zero votes in the past, they ran uncontested and won.

Félix-Antoine Hamel, 45, received zero votes Monday after putting his name on the ballot in a recent Toronto-St. Paul's by-election held in Toronto.

The Montreal musician decided to run for office — at least on paper — as part of a protest over the first-past-the-post election system in the country, in which the candidate who gets more votes than their opponents, rather than a majority of votes, is elected.

Hamel, who worked with the election reform advocacy group Longest Ballot Committee, was one of some 84 people who were listed as candidates on the ballot, according to the outlet.

The committee argues that Canada’s current system awards candidates who the majority of voters didn’t vote for. It secured 77 names on the Toronto ballot — making it the longest paper ballot in Canadian history.

Hamel, right, was one of some 84 people who were listed as candidates on the ballot, according to the outlet.

Lesser-known, independent candidates often get at least one of two votes as they are allowed to vote for themselves. But Hamel lives far outside the district he ran in and therefore couldn’t vote in the election.

“I’m one of the last people that would be expected to make Canadian history in any way,” he told CBC.

Despite his loss, Hamel was glad the history-making scheme brought attention to the need for voting reforms.

Hamel lives outside the district he ran in, and couldn't vote for himself.

“As long as I have the right and the privilege to get zero votes in an election, then we are truly in a democracy,” he said.

Prime Minister JustinTrudeau had made a campaign promise to get rid of the oldschool first-past-the-post system after the 2015 federal election but has yet to make good on the promise.
