Located on East Liberty Street, “Graffiti Alley” is one of the touchstones of the Ann Arbor community, and it means a lot to the locals even as it doubles as an awesome tourist attraction for visitors.

No one knows who first took a can of spray paint to the alley, but when the city covered it all up with a mural in 1999, rebels were back with their tagging within the week.

They were so thorough in defacing the alley, in fact, that it became the most colorful, vibrant and eye-popping place in the entire city.

Today, there are layers upon layers of graffiti in the alley, and there’s always new work being added.

It’s the kind of place that’s never the same when you visit it.

As the crown jewel of Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan boasts many of the city's top attractions. Start your visit by touring the manicured grounds of the campus, which was opened in Ann Arbor in 1837 (though the school got its start in Detroit in 1817). U-M has a total enrollment of about 48,000 students and stretches across a massive 3,207 acres. You'll find University of Michigan properties dispersed throughout Ann Arbor, though the main campus is centrally located within the city near parks, museums, bars and dining establishments.

When it comes to things to do on campus, you won't be left scratching your head. The university is home to 30 stunning libraries and more than 16 museums, including the Museum of Natural History , the Museum of Art , the Kelsey Museum of Archeology, Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Nichols Arboretum , the Herbarium and the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry. Other points of interest include the William W. Cook Law Quadrangle (a 10-acre compound comprising pristine green space and impressive gothic-style buildings), the Gerald R. Ford Library and Hill Auditorium (a classical music concert hall). You'll even find a hotel and restaurants on the premises. Campus visitors praised the gorgeous architecture and were wowed by the sheer size of the university. They also enjoyed the many museums on-site.

University of Michigan Museum of Natural History University of Michigan Museum of Natural History free

The Museum of Natural History was founded in 1956, though the university began collecting and storing artifacts and specimens as early as 1837. Then called the Exhibit Museum, it was officially renamed the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History in 2011, and in 2019 it moved into a brand-new facility on campus.

Popular exhibits include "Dynamic Space," "On the Trail of the Mastodons" (where male and female mastodon skeletons stand side by side), and "Under the Microscope," which explores life at the cellular level. There is also an on-site planetarium. Visitors to the museum were impressed by the detailed exhibits and huge amount of information in the new facility. They extolled the nicely designed space and said their children loved the hands-on activities dispersed throughout.

University of Michigan Museum of Art University of Michigan Museum of Art free

The University of Michigan Museum of Art, or UMMA, opened in 1909 as a war memorial, alumni office and art space. Today, it is one of the oldest (and largest) campus museums in the United States, holding more than 21,000 pieces of art. Collections include Asian, African and Western art in all sorts of mediums, including photography, glass and metal. Permanent exhibits feature the works of artists like Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. The museum also has an auditorium for lectures, film screenings and other events. Recent travelers found the museum to be comprehensive and informative. For many, UMMA's small size worked to their advantage; the manageable footprint allowed patrons to get through much of the collections. 

UMMA is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and on university holidays. Admission is free of charge, and street parking is available. Other nearby points of interest include the Law Quadrangle, the Kelsey Museum of Archeology and the student union. Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum free

The Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum are operated by the same organization on the grounds of the University of Michigan . The Matthaei Gardens feature 11 outdoor spaces with bonsai, medicinal plants and seasonal blooms, as well as approximately 3 miles of scenic trails. There is also an indoor conservatory that is open year-round – ideal if you are visiting during Michigan's icy months. At Matthaei's visitor center, you will find maps and other information, as well as restrooms and a snack bar. Recent travelers had nothing but positive things to say about the expansive grounds and gorgeous flowers, noting it is a great attraction for all ages.

Meanwhile, Nichols Arboretum is a joint operation between the City of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. It is a 123-acre property with varying landscapes, ranging from wetlands to forests to glacial grounds. At the arboretum, travelers can hike up to panoramic views and enjoy the tranquility of nature, without venturing far from civilization. Recent travelers remarked Nichols is a delightful hidden gem, and many said the Peony Garden – which typically blooms between late May and mid-June – is a must-see.  

Huron River Water Trail Huron River Water Trail

The Huron River Water Trail covers 104 miles through Michigan's Lower Peninsula and welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually. The paddling zones of the river range from raging rapids to calm waters. Ann Arbor is the largest of five Trail Towns where visitors can enter the river, find amenities like parks and boat storage and frequent nearby campgrounds, hotels and dining establishments. While paddling is available in the spring and summer, visitors can cross-country ski, snowshoe and ice skate in the area if they visit in the winter months.

The Ann Arbor region of the Huron River Water Trail comprises miles 53 to 46. Popular launch points along this section include the Argo Nature Area and Livery, as well as the Gallup Park and Livery. At Argo, travelers can rent canoes, kayaks and multiperson rafts to paddle downstream through beautiful scenery, placid ponds and Argo Cascades, which features adrenaline-pumping manmade drops and pools. At Gallup Park, choose between canoe, kayak, paddleboat and rowboat rentals for your river adventure. On shore, the park features a 3-mile asphalt trail, playgrounds, fishing spots, picnic areas and concession stands.

Kerrytown Kerrytown free

If you are looking for an authentic Ann Arbor culinary experience, Kerrytown is the place to find it. Named after County Kerry in Ireland, the district was part of the original Ann Arbor village dating back to the mid-1800s. In the 1960s, developers added a central shopping and dining area to the eclectic neighborhood and called it Kerrytown Market & Shops. Much of the architectural character from decades past still remains; visitors can expect to find brick buildings and sidewalks, original exposed beams, converted 19th-century factories and more.

Kerrytown Market & Shops is home to some of the city's most beloved dining mainstays, including the Ann Arbor Farmers Market and Zingerman's Deli, a local institution that's served up premium deli sandwiches (including its famous Reuben), cheeses, olive oils, smoked fish and more since 1982. Among other meat, fish and produce markets, you'll also find sit-down restaurants with cuisine ranging from vegan to Korean, plus a Sweetwaters coffee shop location.

Opened in 1982 in a historic fire station, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is an interactive, family-friendly science center. It has attracted around 6 million visitors since its inception and aims to introduce children of all ages to the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields of study. Favorite exhibits include the "H2Oh" water play area in the Concourse and the "Michigan Nature" experience, which features an interactive nature wall and geology samples. Recent travelers spoke highly of the museum, saying it has something for toddlers all the way up to preteens. They also noted that the facility was clean and well-maintained.

The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is open seven days a week, though opening hours vary by day. On Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Tuesdays, the attraction opens up one hour earlier (9 a.m.), and on Thursdays, it stays open until 8 p.m. Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free for toddlers 23 months and younger and $12.50 for adults and children ages 2 and older. Michigan Theater Michigan Theater

The Michigan Theater opened in 1928 as a combined vaudeville stage and movie house. It has undergone a few renovations over the years, and today offers audiences with three screening spaces to view films and live concerts. The Main Auditorium holds 1,600 people, the Screening Room has 200 seats and the Annex Cinema holds 60. The theater offers programming 365 days a year, and past visitors praised the old-timey feel of the theater, as well as the curated list of films and live acts. Still, not all patrons appreciated the retro space, noting that the seats were too tight for taller viewers and not as comfortable as the plush chairs in more modern theaters.

General admission tickets for films are $10.50 per person, while students, veterans, senior citizens and groups of 10 or more can secure tickets for $8.50. Matinee showings between Monday and Friday (before 6 p.m.) cost $7.50 per person. Ticket prices for live events vary, and parking is available in multiple nearby garages as well as on nearby streets. Nickels Arcade Nickels Arcade free

Located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, Nickels Arcade is a cozy but upscale covered shopping area with a rich history. The indoor-outdoor complex began as a meat market owned by the Nickels family. After Tom Nickels inherited the market in the early 1900s, he repurposed the shop and expanded the facility to resemble the shopping arcades found in Europe at the time. Nickels completed the block in 1918 and different kinds of shops began opening within the complex.

Today, Nickels Arcade – which celebrated its centennial in 2017 – boasts both vintage and modern-day stores along its mosaic-tiled alley. Visitors can stop into the old-timey barbershop, which dates back to 1917, and grab a drink at the modern juice bar or coffee shop in the same trip. Recent travelers remarked that the block is worth visiting for a short stroll, and many praised the quality merchandise available at several of the shops – including VanBoven Clothing, which has been operated within the same family since 1927.

No self-respecting foodie would dream of passing through Ann Arbor without a meal at Zingerman’s Deli. Co-founders Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweigteamed up to open the iconic dining institution in 1982, building their reputation on outstanding pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, chopped liver, smoked fish, and other traditional Jewish fare. The Zingerman’s Bakehouse joined the family in 1994, progressively followed by a creamery, Zingerman’s Roadhouse, a candy manufactory, a coffee company, and a Korean restaurant called Miss Kim in Kerrytown. In addition to all that, there's a teaching bakery and mail order services for long-distance fans who just can’t get enough.

Absorb some world-class culture at the on-campus University of Michigan Museum of Art. The collection covers African, Asian, and Western art as well as photography, modern/contemporary art, decorative arts and design, traveling exhibitions, and educational programming.

Feel Like a Kid Again

Pay a visit to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum situated inside a historic downtown firehouse to check out more than 250 interactive STEAM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities and displays spread across 20,000 square feet of exhibit space. The Michigan Nature Gallery, a MediaWorks section, the old-fashioned Lyons Country Store, a bubble capsule, and climbing wall capture the imaginations of kids—and adults—of all ages.

In addition to a vibrant restaurant scene and charming selection of boutiques to browse, the Kerrytown neighborhood hosts the popular Ann Arbor Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, keeping the local community stocked up on fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products, honey, flowers, and more from a dedicated roster of more than 100 vendors. A Food Truck Rally ups the ante of offerings on the first Wednesday evening of each month from May through October. Launched by a collective of artists and crafters in 1991, the Ann Arbor Artisan Market takes over on Sunday afternoons between April and December to showcase paintings, jewelry, leather goods, soaps, glass and metal art, candles, and other handmade goods from 50 local makers.

Equipped with a restored 1927 Barton Theater pipe organ, this showy gold-leafed movie palace hearkens back to silent film era when it opened in 1928. Today, the acoustically awesome 1,700-seat main auditorium hosts performances by the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, along with contemporary and retro movie screenings and other events. Likewise, the State Theatre lures cinephiles to downtown Ann Arbor to take in art films and cult classics inside an Art Deco facade.

Ann Arbor maintains several attractions that let visitors see what rural life was like down on the farm. At one time a two-family home for a U.S. Naval surgeon and a local politician/farmer back in the mid 1800s, Cobblestone Farm house opens its doors to showcase the lovingly restored residence for guided weekday tours by appointment. Or, mix and mingle with the barnyard residents at the 20-acre Petting Farm at Domino’s Farm , where on any given visit, you might get the chance to get up close to alpacas, horses, sheep, cows, pigs, goats, llamas, and chickens.

If you’re looking for outdoor things to do in Ann Arbor, why not hop in a kayak and paddle down the Huron River?

The Huron River Water Trail meanders for 104 miles through Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Ypsilanti, offering endless outdoor adventure. Kayaking, canoeing, SUPing, and tubing down the river are easily some of the coolest and most popular Ann Arbor activities when the weather is nice. Plus, the river offers a mix of calm waters and roaring rapids, making an excursion along the Huron River Water Trail a great activity for all skill levels. 

The Ann Arbor section of the Huron River Water Trail unravels for nearly 10 miles. One of the most popular routes is the 1.5-hour trip from Argo Park to Gallup Park (you can find rentals at both parks). For something a bit more adventurous, you can also try paddling 2.5 hours from Barton to Gallup!

While the Huron River Water Trail does close for the winter season, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating in the winter months.

2. Spend a Day in Historic Kerrytown 

When it comes to cool things to do in Ann Arbor, Kerrytown offers them in spades. This historic part of town dates back to the mid-1800s, and today you’ll find red-brick buildings, revamped 19th-century factories, and all sorts of architectural gems housing cool shops, cafes, and restaurants.

If you consider yourself a foodie, you’ll want to spend some time eating your way around Kerrytown. From the pastrami or tempeh-stuffed Reuben sandwiches at Zingerman’s Deli to the pork belly bibimbop and Korean BBQ tempeh banh mi at Miss Kim , you’ll find something to suit all tastes here.

Once you’ve had your fill, be sure to browse all of the cool boutique shops in Kerrytown Market & Shops . From handcrafted jewelry and vintage home goods to specialty oils and teas, you’ll find a surprise around every corner.

3. Sip Fresh Apple Cider at the Dexter Cider Mill

Located in the nearby town of Dexter, the Dexter Cider Mill is a must on your Ann Arbor bucket list if you’re planning on an autumn visit. This place has been family-owned and operated since 1886, and they pride themselves on keeping things just like they were over 100 years ago.

The location along the Huron River is beautiful at any time of year, but visit in the fall, and you’ll love being surrounded by trees bursting with fall colors. Be sure to come hungry because the Dexter Cider Mill serves up all sorts of fresh and delicious treats. 

From apple strudel, apple turnovers, and caramel apples to barbecue sauces, mustards, and honey, you’ll find all sorts of goodies you won’t be able to resist taking home. And you can’t visit the Dexter Cider Mill without trying at least one of their famous cinnamon-sugar donuts and washing it down with a cup of homemade wood-pressed cider. 

Plus, the 21+ crowd will love sipping on their delicious hard cider, which is available in Traditional, Bourbon Barrel Aged, and IPC flavors. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Ann Arbor, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Dexter Cider Mill!

4. See the Michigan Wolverines Kick Off at the ‘Big House’

The University of Michigan is home to the largest stadium in the US and the third-largest in the world. Known as the “Big House,” this behemoth has a capacity of 107,601. So you can imagine how infectious the atmosphere is during a big game!

If you happen to be in town on a Saturday during the college football season – which runs from August to December – getting tickets to see the Michigan Wolverines play at Michigan Stadium is a must on your Ann Arbor bucket list. 

You’ll want to get to the stadium early to soak up the energy of all the tailgate parties before kickoff. Better yet, bring a portable grill and cooler and throw your own tailgate party! And don’t forget to don your maize and blue, so you fit in with the crowd.

5. Find All of Ann Arbor’s Tiny ‘Fairy Doors’

If you’re looking for unique Ann Arbor activities, kids and adults alike will love seeking out all of the city’s whimsical “ fairy doors .” You’ll find these tiny entryways peppered around town in the most unlikely places!

The first fairy doors were discovered by the daughters of Jonathan B. Wright when he was renovating his Ann Arbor home in 1993. The girls found five six-inch fairy doors, some of which opened up to miniature furnished rooms.

Since this “discovery,” over two dozen cute fairy doors have popped up around the city. Kids love finding them and leaving little gifts for the resident fairies. Sometimes it’s possible to see lights on inside the doors, which means the fairies are at home.

To spot a fairy door for yourself, head over to Sweetwaters Café (the West Washington location), where you’ll find a tiny door and mini coffee shop, before seeking out the tiny door and windows of book “houses” on a shelf in the Downtown Library and the tiny door offering fairies access to the Michigan Theater , to name a few!   

6. Shop for Local Goods at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market

There’s no better way to get a taste of the local flavor than by visiting a farmers’ market. Luckily, Ann Arbor is home to a thriving farm-to-table movement made even stronger due to the year-round Ann Arbor Farmers Market . This historic market has been running for over 100 years and today attracts over 115 vendors from around Michigan and Ohio.

You can find everything here, from farm-fresh fruits, veggies, herbs, and flowers to delicious donuts, pies, gluten-free baked goods, and coffee. Come hungry, too, because vendors at this farmers’ market cook up everything from Mediterranean food to Polish fare. 

Of course, it’s not all about food. You can shop for all sorts of handcrafted goods, like jewelry, soaps, and candles. Or just grab a cup of fresh-roasted coffee and soak up the vibe.

The farmers’ market is located in Kerrytown at 315 Detroit Street. You can visit on both Wednesdays and Saturdays from May to December from 7 am to 3 pm. However, from January to April, only the Saturday market is open (8 am to 3 pm).   

7. Go on a DIY Brewery Tour

Ann Arbor takes its craft brews very seriously, so it’s no surprise that more and more breweries pop up every year. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Ann Arbor, embarking on a DIY brewery tour will not disappoint!

You can start your journey on the West Side of the city at Wolverine State Brewing Co , which is known around town for their award-winning lagers. Order up a full order of their “Famous Nachos” to share and wash them down with a Gulo Gulo India Pale Lager or a Tundra King West Coast Style I.P.L. 

After that, make your way on foot to West Liberty Street, where you’ll find Townies Brewery . Here you can order a flight and nosh on bar bites from the on-site food truck. 

Once you’ve had your fill, continue down the road to HOMES Brewery to try their innovative brews, including the crisp Hitasu Rice Lager, the citrusy Same Same Different IPA, or the fruity Razz Peach Sherbet Fruited Sour. If you’ve got the room, the menu features some seriously good Asian street food-style snacks.

From Arbor Brewing Company to Grizzly Peak Brewing Co. , you’ll find tons of other excellent breweries sprinkled around town too!

8. Get Cultured at the University of Michigan Museum of Art

The sprawling University of Michigan campus is home to many of the best Ann Arbor attractions, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art . Among the 19,000 works housed in this expansive museum, you’ll find pieces from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, and Frank Lloyd Wright, to name a few.

You’ll find a wide range of collections inside the museum, too, from the African Art, Asian Art, and Western Art collections to the Photography, Decorative Arts/Design, and Modern/Contemporary Art collections.

9. Get Outside on the Border-to-Border Trail

When it comes to outdoor things to do in Ann Arbor, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re looking to get a nice workout in when the weather is nice, you’ll absolutely love the city’s Border-to-Border Trail (aka the B2B Trail).

This paved, non-motorized trail meanders for 35 miles along the Huron River from Livingston County to Wayne County. You can explore six different “corridors” which will connect you to surrounding towns. But if you want to stay local, the Ann Arbor Corridor offers 5.6 miles of outdoor adventure. 

You can head out on two wheels or on foot. Along the way, you can rent a kayak at one of the two liveries, explore Gallup Park, picnic at Bandemer Park, or admire the scenery at the Argo Nature Area. Visit during the fall season, and you’ll likely be spoiled with stunning fall colors!

10. Sample Ann Arbor’s Diverse Restaurant Scene

Ann Arbor is known as a foodie city, so you’ll definitely want to treat yourself to a few of its most iconic dishes. No trip to Ann Arbor is complete without ordering up a classic burger from Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger or a Rueben sandwich from Zingerman’s Delicatessen .

But if you’re hungry for more, you’ll love sampling the wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas from Mani Osteria and Bar before sipping a Belgian-style brew at Jolly Pumpkin Café & Brewery .

If you’re looking to try Ann Arbor’s many international flavors, head over to Frita Batidos for Cuban-inspired burgers, visit Slurping Turtle for sushi and ramen, or stop off at The Blue Nile for Ethiopian eats. 11. Be Endlessly Entertained at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival

If you’re planning a summer trip to Ann Arbor, try your best to time your visit with the annual Ann Arbor Summer Festival . This epic festival lasts for a whopping four weeks, during which the entire city comes alive with all sorts of cool events and attractions. 

You can expect over 200 events catering to all ages and interests. From concerts, comedy shows, and dance troops to outdoor film screenings, art exhibitions, and kid-friendly activities, you’re sure to be endlessly entertained. Of course, you can expect to find all manner of food being served at the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, too.

The best part about this unique festival is that most of the events are totally free to attend. But be sure to check the website before you head out since some events do require tickets.

12. Photograph Nickels Arcade

Step inside Nickels Arcade, and you’ll immediately feel like you’ve been transported to Europe. This classic shopping arcade was built in 1918 and features an incredibly photogenic 261-foot-long mosaic-tiled corridor. 

Plus, this architectural gem has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so you know it’s something special! If you’re looking for photo ops in Ann Arbor, Nickels Arcade is a must-visit.

Located at 326 South State Street, Nickels Arcade is also a great spot to do a little shopping during your trip. First, grab a cup of coffee at Comet Coffee, and then peruse the unique shops that line both sides of the covered corridor. 

You’ll find some of the city’s oldest shops in the arcade, including the Van Boven men’s boutique and Caravan Gift Shop. From the antique shop and old-fashioned barbershop to the vintage stores and adorable flower shop, it’s impossible not to be charmed by this unique attraction.

13. Escape the City at the Matthaei Botanical Garden and Nichols Arboretum

Nature enthusiasts will love spending an afternoon at the Matthaei Botanical Garden and Nichols Arboretum . If you’re looking for free things to do in Ann Arbor, these two nature-filled attractions should definitely be on your to-do list. 

Explore the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, and you’ll find 11 outdoor garden spaces, including the Bonsai and Penjing Garden, the Medicinal Garden, and the Gateway Garden of New World Plants. If you’ve got the little ones in tow, be sure to check out the hands-on Gaffield Children’s Garden, too. 

Head over to the Nichols Arboretum (aka the Arb), and you’ll find 3.5 miles of trails leading to a handful of gardens. If you happen to be in town from late May or early June, follow the Peony Trail to see all the blooms in the Peony Garden! 

The outdoor gardens aren’t in bloom in the harsh winter months, but if you are planning on a winter visit, the spectacular Conservatory is open year-round and features a Tropical House, Temperate House, and Arid House.

14. Spend Some Time in the State Street District

The State Street District is where you need to be if you want to be in the center of all the action. Located right next to the University of Michigan campus, there’s always something exciting going on in this buzzing part of town. 

The State Street District is home to many of the top Ann Arbor attractions, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art , the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology , and the historic Michigan Theater . This is also where you’ll find some of the best annual festivals and events, like the Ann Arbor Film Festival , the Ann Arbor Summer Festival , and the Ann Arbor Art Fair . 

And if you’re just looking to wine and dine, you’ll find all sorts of excellent bars and restaurants in this part of town – from beers at HopCat to pizzas at The Original Cottage Inn . After you’ve had your fill, be sure to check out all of the district’s quirky shops, bookstores, and more!

15. Sip Cocktails at The Last Word… If You Can Find It

The Last Word is easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for. This speakeasy-style cocktail and whiskey bar can be found behind an unmarked door in downtown Ann Arbor. (Hint: If you see the number 301, you’re in the right place.)

Step inside the dimly lit bar and take your time to peruse the novel-length drinks menu. It features everything from wine and beer to cider and whiskey, but it’s the creative, top-notch cocktails that really make this place shine!

If you need a little spice in your life, try The Osborn, a concoction of Mammoth Old Dam Gin, pineapple, jalapeño, lime, and ginger beer; or order the Devil’s Dew with Banhez Mezcal, lime, Zucca Rabarbaro, beet syrup, banana liqueur, and a habanero tincture. But don’t worry if spice isn’t your thing. You’ll find all sorts of non-spicy, fruit and herb-forward cocktails on the menu, too.

If you’re feeling peckish, the food menu features all sorts of globally-inspired treats. From Fried Chicken Buns and Moroccan Meatballs to Malay Curry Poutine and Koreatown Cauliflower, you’ll want to sample everything on the menu!

1.  Mighty Good Coffee

What is it?  This superb coffee roaster and cafe has four cozy locations conveniently dotted throughout Ann Arbor.

Why go?  The reason to come to this cafe is in its name: Mighty Good Coffee. With a combined focus on building local community and brewing phenomenal coffee, founders David Myers and Jim Levinsohn say they pour their passion into every roast, every bag, every day. The Mighty Good philosophy, mission and dedication to the bean is as undeniably honorable as the coffee is divine. Also on offer is a toast bar, freshly-baked pastries and weekend brunch (depending on location).

2.  Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum

What is it?  This colorful, interactive museum is as much for adults as it is for kids.

Why go?  The four-story museum features 250 exhibits inviting guests to get involved and explore with their hands. The Hands-On Museum is unique in the way that it specializes in interactive exhibits; the normal ‘no touch’ policy of standard, traditional museums is nowhere in sight. Instead, guests are invited and encouraged to touch, feel and play their way around each unique discovery throughout the museum.   

3.  Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tea Room

What is it?  This metaphysical bookstore and tea room has been locally owned and independent since 1982.

Why go?  This unique bookstore carries over 200 categories of books for the mind, body and spirit—from acupuncture and affirmations to yoga and zen. Jewelry, crafts, art, music, incense, candles, cards, journals, and other items are also for sale. The tea room on the second floor carries more than 100 types of tea and coffee along with appetizers, entrees, desserts and other treats to be enjoyed. Crazy Wisdom is a spirited place not to be missed when in Ann Arbor.

4.  The Blind Pig

What is it?  This beloved venue is the place to go for live music in downtown Ann Arbor.

Why go?  The Blind Pig is a small, intimate venue fit for live music. All genres are represented at this favorite venue, which is a staple for music lovers. Some nights it’s a rock house, others a techno club; the chameleon-like environment mirrors the music of the day. The venue’s basement also features a classic hole-in-the-wall bar called 8 Ball Saloon, known to be the best dive in all of Ann Arbor. The Blind Pig is a timeless gem, home to many local musicians who’ve gone on to become stars.

5.  Matthaei Botanical Gardens

What is it?  The botanical garden organization of the University of Michigan includes gardens, a conservatory, trails, artwork and more.

Why go?  The Matthaei Botanical Gardens has two locations with the mission to promote environmental enjoyment, stewardship and sustainability through interaction with the natural world along with research and education. Walk through the conservatory, visit the gardens, marvel at the artwork and enjoy a stroll through the trails. The Nichols Arboretum includes a peony garden with more trails and natural areas, as well as art displays.

6.  The Big House (Michigan Stadium)

What is it?  This is the world-renowned football stadium for the University of Michigan.

Why go?  Michigan Stadium is called the Big House because it’s the largest stadium in the United States, and the second largest in the world. Originally built in 1927 for less than a million dollars, it was renovated in 2010 for over $200 million. The stadium is historic in the world of football and beyond, and certainly worth a visit for sports fans to marvel at the modernized masterpiece.

7.  Pointless Brewery & Improv Theatre

What is it? This hidden gem is self-described as Ann Arbor’s home for delicious improv comedy and entertaining craft beer (yes, you read that right!).

Why go?  The Pointless Brewery & Improv Theatre is a place for hearty laughs over craft beer and improv comedy. Concession-style snacks are served at this all-ages-welcome independent comedy theatre, but guests are forewarned that shows are completely uncensored. The likelihood of R-rated material in the form of adult language and content is to be expected.

8.  Blank Slate Creamery

What is it? This is unique, locally owned ice cream parlor serves homemade ice cream with fresh, all-natural ingredients in a relaxed, friendly, creative space.

Why go?  This is where to bring your sweet tooth for the best ice cream in Ann Arbor. Available in pints, quarts, cookie sandwiches, ice cream cupcakes, brownies and cookies by the dozen, Blank Slate’s goodies are available both in-store and through online ordering. 9.  Good Time Charley’s

Since its start in 1928, this gorgeous theater has served as a staple in downtown Ann Arbor. Known collectively as "The Henry Ford," this is a group of three attractions that explore not only the auto legend's life and work, but also the entire scope of American innovation. Visitors can take a step back in time at historic Greenfield Village , where you will see what life looked like in the 19th century.

Points of interest include working farms, a restaurant that serves fare that was typical in the 1830s, the train depot where you can catch a ride on a steam-powered locomotive, and rides in a Model T. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation tells the story of inventors and forward-thinkers who helped shape the world we see today, from the Wright brothers' dream of flying to Rosa Parks' conviction to see change in her lifetime.

For a look at the most current marvels of innovation, the Ford Rouge Factory Tour allows visitors to witness the inner workings of an automotive factory and learn more about the technology and concepts that go into modern vehicles.

Isle Royale lies in northwestern Lake Superior near the Canadian frontier. Shaped by Ice Age glaciers, this 432-square-mile island has many lakes and streams, dense forests, and a variety of wildlife that includes wolves, foxes, moose, otters, ospreys, herring gulls, falcons, and more. This relatively unspoiled tract of country attracts those looking for a remote wilderness experience.

The best way to see the park is on hiking trails and boat trips. Access to the island is by boat or seaplane. Trips usually originate from Houghton or Copper Harbor, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota.

The Detroit Zoo has an impressive variety of animals in multiple habitats representing all parts of the world. African animals live either in the forest or grassland habitats and include everything from aardvark to zebra, with many family favorites like giraffes, lions, lemurs, and several primates.

An arctic habitat is home to the zoo's famous polar bears, and the Australian Outback has sixteen resident kangaroos and two wallabies. The exotic Asian Forest features red pandas and Amur tigers, while the North American habitats feature some of the continent's most interesting animals, including bears, wolverines, and bald eagles.

The zoo also houses reptile and amphibian centers, an aviary, and even a fine art collection. Visitors can tour the park aboard the miniature Tauber Family Railroad, which has been in operation since 1931.

Battle Creek's Binder Park Zoo also offers a vintage train ride, as well as a "wilderness tram" through its African Savannah habitat, and the John Ball Zoo , one of the top attractions in Grand Rapids , has a large selection of special animal interaction opportunities.

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor encompasses 2,800 acres. Some of the interesting old Gothic buildings include the Law Quadrangle, the Power Center for the Performing Arts, and the Natural History Museum . Key attractions on the campus include the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology , with strong collections related to Mediterranean civilizations, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History.

Beyond the university you'll find a long list of fun and interesting things to do in Ann Arbor . Among these, and located off campus, is the Matthaei Botanical Gardens . Located next to the central campus is the Nichols Arboretum .

Detroit's Belle Isle sits in the Detroit River , housing an expansive park that is home to numerous attractions; the entrance fee to the island covers admission to all.

A family favorite is the Belle Isle Aquarium, the country's oldest aquarium . It is housed in a historic 1904 building with a stunning green opalite vaulted ceiling, and aquarium residents include favorites like pufferfish and clown fish, turtles, seahorses, and even poison frogs.

The Anna Scrips Whitcomb Conservatory is another popular attraction, occupying 13 acres alongside the Lilu Pond and the formal gardens. It is one of the oldest conservatories in the country, and includes the Show House, Palm House, Cactus House, Tropical House, and a sunken Fernery.

To find out more about the region's maritime history, visit the Dossin Great Lakes Museum , home to permanent and changing exhibits that celebrate the economic and social importance of the Great Lakes.

Among the many other attractions on Belle Isle are the grand James Scott Memorial Fountain , a Giant Slide, the Belle Isle Golf Range, and the Belle Isle Boat House. Belle Isle is also home to the Detroit Yacht Club

Michilimackinac, located in Mackinaw City, was a French fur-trading village and military outpost that operated from 1715 until 1781, when it was almost entirely destroyed by fire. Also known as Fort Mackinac, the site is now home to 14 fully restored and authentically furnished buildings, one of which is the oldest in Michigan.

Presented as a living history museum, the attraction offers plenty of things to do. Costumed interpreters work and go about their day as they would have in 1775, from farming and cooking chores to musket and marching drills. Highlights include the Soldiers Barracks housing an exhibit on the island's history, the Post Hospital with descriptions of medical treatment during the fort's operation, and the Post Guardhouse that explores the era's military justice system.

Visitors may explore freely or choose a guided tour, and there is a children's area dedicated to engaging younger historians in learning about 18th-century life.

Located within Palms Brook State Park in Michigan's Central Upper Peninsula , Kitch-iti-Kipi is a unique freshwater spring that is fed 10,000 gallons of water every minute. Referred to as the "Mirror of Heaven" by the native Chippewa, the water here is a stunning blue-green and crystal clear, allowing visitors to see far into its depths. The temperature of the spring is always 45 degrees Fahrenheit, so even in the middle of a Michigan winter, the water remains unfrozen.

Tourists can board a wheelchair-accessible covered observation craft, which has an open center, allowing unobstructed views of the aquatic life below. Because the spring water emerges from fissures in the limestone below, the millennia-old tree trunks and branches that line the bottom are encrusted in lime, creating an almost alien landscape.

Palms Brook State Park offers a concession area with picnic tables and public-use grills, as well as restrooms. Indian Lake State Park is nearby, bordering Lake Michigan . It has a campground, hiking trails, a boat launch, and a beach, as well as additional picnic shelters and restrooms.

One of the most pictureque places in Michigan , Windmill Island is a 36-acre heritage park filled with manicured flower gardens and Dutch architecture. In May, the park comes to life with 175,000 tulips, and in June the extensive gardens change to annual flowers.

Highlights include an authentic Dutch windmill, DeZwaan, dating to the 1760s and brought from the Netherlands in 1964. Standing 125 feet, the windmill is a symbol of the Dutch heritage of this area and is the only original Dutch windmill exported to America. It is still a working windmill producing stone ground flour for sale.

Holland is also home to the Outdoor Discovery Center of Wildlife Unlimited , which has taken on the task of restoring agricultural land to natural habitat. As a result of their efforts, there are now six distinct ecosystems on this 130-acre nature preserve. Highlights include walking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Open seasonally from May 1 through October 31, this museum is full of artifacts from historic wrecks of Lake Superior's "Shipwreck Coast," an 80-mile section of dangerous shoreline that claimed numerous lives. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is among its most famous victims, and the museum displays its recovered bell.

Museum admission includes the Whitefish Point Light Tower , which is Lake Superior's oldest continually operating lighthouse. Visitors can also tour the Lightkeepers Quarters , built in 1861, which has been fully restored, as well as the 1923 Surfboat House . There is also a barrier-free boardwalk that allows access to the fragile dunes of Whitefish Point .

The Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing was the first facility created by the state museum system and is its largest educational center. Exhibits and artifacts range from an exploration of the region's native populations through the state's evolution and growth as it became what you see today. Permanent and rotating exhibits include interactive modules, films, and presentations.

Exhibits are continuously updated to incorporate the latest technology while enhancing visitors' ability to look into the past. The Michigan History Museum System also operates several other museum sites and archival collections, maintains historic markers, and offers special programs and events for both residents and tourists.

Thinking of going to the Ann Arbor Summer Festival (A2SF) for the first time and not sure what to expect? Want to know when to dance, what to eat, and where to park? We have you covered! Check out this page for all the tips and tricks of one of the largest summer festivals.   

The A2SF takes place June 14-30th, and it is all about having a great time. We will highlight some of the must-try festival experiences, and if that is not enough, check out our guide for more unique A2SF fun.  

Where To Park 

Live music, events, and nightly films happen at the Top of The Park in Ingalls Mall, 881 N University Ave, Ann Arbor, 48103. In this area, street meters are available nearby from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. (free after 6 p.m.) Mon-Sat, and free on Sundays. 

In addition to street parking, nearby Fletcher St and Thayer St Parking Structures are just a street away from Ingalls Mall. 

Ann Arbor also has plenty of public transportation options, including May Mobility , an autonomous vehicle shuttle service, and the Washtenaw bus system known as TheRide , which offers multiple routes to the A2SF. Check out our A2SF guide for directions and parking details.

Sunscreen, hat, lawn chairs, picnic blankets, comfiest dancing shoes, wallet, and it is essential to bring your phone/camera to capture memories!

Renovated Michigan Central Station To Reopen In Detroit

Ford acquired the abandoned train station in 2018 as the centerpiece of Michigan Central, a 30-acre technology and cultural hub in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Plus, Sartorius launches its new Center of Excellence for bioanalytics in Ann Arbor.

F ollowing an extensive six-year renovation by Ford Motor Company, Michigan Central Station in Detroit will offer the public its first look at the interior restoration of its historic ground floor this week. The official reopening of The Station will be celebrated with an event dubbed Michigan Central OPEN , June 6-16.

Ford began the preservation project after acquiring the abandoned train station in 2018 to be the centerpiece of Michigan Central, a 30-acre technology and cultural hub in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Michigan Central will bring Ford employees together with external partners, entrepreneurs, students — and even competitors — to co-create new products, services, and technologies. Ford’s investment in the project represents a commitment to the city of Detroit and its future.

“Michigan Central means a great deal to us all. In many ways, this building tells the story of our city,” said Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford. “This Station was our Ellis Island — a place where dreamers in search of new jobs and new opportunities first set foot in Detroit. But once the last train pulled out, it became a place where hope left. In 2018, I decided it was time to change that by reimagining this station as a place of possibility again. Over the past six years, Ford Motor Company and teams of forward thinkers, designers, community leaders, and more than 3,000 skilled tradespeople have worked to bring this landmark back to life.”

Historic Grandeur Meets Modern Technology

Ford and Michigan Central assembled a team to breathe new life into the Beaux-Arts building — from its classical façade to its ornate interiors, including the Grand Hall with its 54-foot Guastavino tile vaulted ceiling, to the arcade, ticket lobby, and restaurant. Since renovations began in late 2018, more than 1.7 million hours have been spent returning The Station to its original architectural grandeur, while retrofitting it with modern technology and infrastructure to support its next chapter.

“I wanted Michigan Central to be beautifully restored but also reimagined for so much more,” said Ford. “This will be a place for the community to enjoy and a destination for visitors from all over. We will have restaurants, music, art, and great retail. And the innovation that will happen here, with startups and companies big and small, will help ensure Detroit preserves its title as the Motor City for generations to come.”

Ford At Michigan Central

Ford is among the building’s first tenants, and will move employees from its Ford Model e and Ford Integrated Services teams into newly renovated office space across three floors in The Station starting later this year. Ford will also have collaboration space in The Station for other Southeast Michigan-based employees to use. Some 1,000 Ford employees will work across the Michigan Central district by the end of the year, with a goal of 2,500 by 2028.

Alongside Ford, The Station will play a critical role in attracting other companies to Detroit, and accommodating them within the 30-acre Michigan Central district. The innovation hub will provide 640,000 square feet of cultural, technology, community, and convening spaces designed to inspire creative collaboration between established companies, universities, growing startups, youth initiatives, students, and other stakeholders.

The Station joins Newlab at Michigan Central , which, in just over a year since its launch, has grown into a diverse community of more than 600 employees from nearly 100 companies and startups, over half of whom have at least one founder from an underrepresented background. With entrepreneurs and inventors focused on fields like advanced aerial mobility, energy equity, and multimodal logistics, Newlab at Michigan Central provides an unparalleled testing environment. It includes infrastructure like the first electrified public road and Bagley Mobility Hub, along with policy tools like the Transportation Innovation Zone, which allows for the safe fast-tracking of testing technology pilots.

A Storied Past

Originally designed by architects Warren & Wetmore and Reed & Stem, the same team behind New York’s famed Grand Central, Michigan Central Station first opened its doors in 1913 as one of the country’s most spectacular transportation terminals. It saw 4,000 daily passengers at its peak, but following decades of declining rail travel, was shuttered in 1988 and sat vacant for three decades, experiencing severe neglect, weathering, decay and vandalism.

“Our construction teams have accomplished what many thought was impossible,” said Ron Staley, Executive Director of Historic Preservation for Christman-Brinker, the Detroit-based joint venture that led the restoration work. “The result is amazing, like no other project any of us have worked on in our careers, and I look forward to everyone experiencing the space at this week’s opening and for generations to come.”

Construction teams looked to old and new technologies to ensure accuracy to historical standards and to preserve, re-create, and repurpose different aspects of the building from all chapters of its life. For example, to source more than 600 tons of limestone, Ford and its partners located the same quarry in Indiana that provided the original stone for The Station’s exterior more than 100 years ago. The quarry, like The Station, had been closed for three decades, and needed to be reopened for the project. A Michigan tradesman spent 428 hours hand-carving a replica of a single column capital from one of these limestone blocks for the building’s north entrance.

Michigan Central Station Renovation Facts

• 8 million bricks make up The Station, which if laid end to end would stretch about 1,000 miles.
• 1,300 square feet of terra cotta cornice was restored.
• 102,000 square feet of windows were replaced or restored.
• 4,200 new light fixtures were installed, including re-creations of three massive chandeliers in the Waiting Room and Grand Hall.
• Restoring the building’s iconic Waiting Room and Grand Hall required the equivalent of 8.7 miles of grout used on the 29,000 Guastavino ceiling tiles alone. All but 1,300 of these tiles are original to The Station.
• 3.5 million gallons of water were pumped from its basement, and 3,990 cubic yards of debris were hauled out of the building.

“Everything Ford could save, we did, and other elements were re-created through technology and tenacity,” said Melissa Dittmer, Head of Place at Michigan Central. “At the same time, it was important to us to respect The Station’s extraordinary past, including its ongoing role in Detroit’s cultural landscape. Weaving these histories through repurposed, state-of-the-art spaces will enable us to create an inclusive, forward-looking building that can propel innovation for the next 100 years.”

To honor The Station’s more recent history, international experts examined and curated graffiti on the building’s walls for preservation. Select sections of this art were saved.

The Station and its surrounding area will also become a destination for Detroit’s residents and visitors. It will feature a growing network of green spaces and an array of local programming and events, as well as arts and cultural opportunities. This week, Michigan Central unveiled the first renderings of a new public park under development on The Station’s former rail yard and a key connector along the 27.5-mile Joe Louis Greenway. Designed for sustainability and inclusivity, it will have a mix of gardens, playscapes, and community gathering and event spaces alongside tech-enabled zones.

Michigan Central supports local residents and small businesses with skills-training programs that address barriers in Detroit’s talent pipeline and connect participants with opportunities for in-demand jobs. The Station also includes a dedicated youth programming floor in its tower that provides 23,000 square feet of flexible space to house local and national organizations focused on growing the next generation.

In the coming months, The Station will begin a phased activation of innovative and experiential retail and dining opportunities.

Sartorius Launches Bioanalytic Center Of Excellence In Ann Arbor

T he life science group Sartorius has opened its new Center of Excellence for bioanalytics in Ann Arbor, MI, two years after breaking ground in the Tech Loop at Research Park. Sartorius has invested around $100 million in the state-of-the-art facility, consolidating existing sites and functions in Ann Arbor. The number of employees at the site is expected to double over time.

“Sartorius is a leading provider of highly automated bioanalytical solutions that are used in the discovery and development of innovative biopharmaceutical drugs. We are helping scientists to gain better, data-driven insights and streamline their workflows, ultimately accelerating the development of new, life-saving therapies. With our new flagship site in Ann Arbor, we are bringing together our core competencies and dedicated experts under one roof, further strengthening our ability to address key customer needs in this highly innovative and relevant field,” said Dr. Alexandra Gatzemeyer, Head of the Lab Products & Services division and member of the Executive Board of Sartorius.

The 130,000-square-foot facility houses a modern manufacturing and services area, biology labs, a warehouse, office and training spaces, as well as a Customer Interaction Center (CIC). Sartorius will develop and manufacture a range of bioanalytical instruments at this site, including the associated reagents, consumables and software solutions. In addition, the company will provide particle validation services and produce microcarriers used in cell culture processes.

The Center of Excellence was built with a focus on sustainability and is seeking a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification, to be administered by the U.S. Green Building Council. Sustainable features include green electric energy supply from 200 kilowatt solar panels, 30 electric vehicle charging stations, and Research Park’s first storm runoff pond.

“Ann Arbor is strategically located at the crossroads of talent, technology and logistics, in close proximity to customers and renowned universities. The opening of our new building in the Tech Loop marks an important milestone for Sartorius in the Americas region, offering space for further expansion in the future,” said Maurice Phelan, President of Sartorius North America.

Sartorius has had a presence in the city for several years, after acquiring the Ann Arbor-based businesses Essen BioScience in 2017 and SoloHill in 2020. In total, around 2,600 employees work for Sartorius at 12 sites in North America.
