Azusa is a city of about 50,000 people situated in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles County.

It’s one of the oldest cities in the county, and it’s conveniently situated only 20 miles away from Los Angeles with easy access to the area’s popular beaches and attractions.

Azusa is situated in an interesting location that allows for interesting experiences. It’s situated in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and along the infamous Route 66.

The city gets its nickname, Canyon City, due to its location at the entrance of the San Gabriel Canyon.

The city is also known for its fabulous year-round weather. In addition, Azusa is famous for its restaurants and shopping areas such as The Outlet By E.L.S., the Azusa Square Shopping Center and the Edgewood Shopping Center.

A number of events and festivals take place in Azusa throughout the year including the free Summer Concert Series and the Fiesta and Craft Beer Festival.

1. Spend an afternoon in Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park is a popular community park with plenty of wide-open, green space to relax.

The park is also home to many facilities including picnic areas with barbecue facilities, a playground, restrooms and a walking trail.

2. Learn about the History of the Rails at the Pacific Railroad Museum

The dedicated volunteers at the Pacific Railroad Museum in nearby San Dimas work hard to bring the area’s railroad history to life so it can be shared with visitors of all ages.

This fascinating museum is situated in a former depot, and the interior has been refurbished to look like a working station. Several exhibits featuring artefacts and old photos are on site.

3. Play a Round of Golf at Azusa Greens Country Club

At Azusa Greens Country Club, you’ll get the ultimate golf experience that includes top service, state-of-the-art facilities and a beautiful, 18-hole, par-70 course.

The year-round course is about 6,200 yards, and it features a range of challenges including bunkers and narrow fairways.

The on-site practice area has a driving range, pitching area, chipping area and practice green. Lessons are available.

4. Catch a Live Performance at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center

As the most popular arts venue in the San Gabriel Valley area, the Arcadia Performing Arts Center hosts world-class entertainment featuring emerging and well-known artists.

This large venue hosts shows in two areas including a concert hall that seats more than 1,000 people and a small theatre that seats 125 people.

Bridge to Nowhere Trail: A Great Hike in Azusa

The Bridge to Nowhere is a great 10 mile round trip trail that follows a stream up to a bridge that basically sits alone in the middle of the wilderness. The bridge was initially built to be the road that connected Azuza to the mountain town of Wrightwood. A road was built up to the bridge, but then the way was wiped out in the flood of 1938. After this, no one tried to rebuild the road, so the bridge is now only accessible through a 10-mile roundtrip hike. When you turn the corner and see the bridge for the first time, it is a strange sight; to think that it has never been driven on and was built only to be abandoned is pretty unique. Here is all the information on this hike if you want to do it yourself and you can see a video I made in 2019 below as well.

Starting Out

We set out on the hike at 7 AM on a Sunday morning. The parking lot was packed, so we had to park down a little down the road, but after a short walk, we got to the start of the trail at the road closed sign.

We started on the trek and almost immediately got to a river crossing. It had been raining the night before and was humid, but the river crossing was not dangerous, and the water was nice and cool.

The path is pretty much left up to your imagination, but the general rule is that if you are confused about where to go, follow the river and try to stay towards the right, the upper path.  I would recommend downloading a GPS track to follow to make it easier on yourself, and All Trails is a good resource for this. Along the way, we crossed over many broken pieces of the road, which showed where it had initially been.

The trail does have a lot of rocks that you have to walk over, and that slows down the hike, especially with the constant water crossings. There is also a decent amount of up and down over the terrain, so plan for a half to a full day here.

After about two and a half miles, there is a little waterfall that greets you before you leave the foliage for a mostly barren second half of the hike.

Again, you just want to try to stay to the right and look out for the trail that goes up at the end to get to the bridge. It is probably easier to watch the video above to see the way the trail looks.

This hike is stunning the entire time, whether you are crossing the river, looking down at the canyon below, or walking through the trees. When we finally arrived at the bridge, there were at least 50 people there watching and partaking in the bungee jumping, that is one of the highlights of this hike. Let me know if you do it in the comments, but I did not do it myself. No one in our group was prepared with the cash needed to participate in this adrenaline rush (they don’t take card), but I’m sure next time we will try it out.

It was entertaining to watch people do it as it looked wholly crazy but a once in a lifetime experience for sure. There was a line the entire time we were there, and they usually only do the jumps on the weekend.

After time for lunch and exploring, we went down and swam in the river below the bridge. You can jump off rocks and kick back and relax for as long as you like before heading back on the hike to your car. This bridge and the area surrounding it is private property, and they have a lot of signs to warn you of that as well.

The hike back is mostly downhill but still takes 2 to 3 hours as you have to cross back and forth over the river and walk along the rocks. It is a nice hike back, and if it is warm, I always swim when I can.

On the way back, we saw everything from rattlesnakes to wild raspberries and even stopped for another swim in the river. This is a popular hike, and we passed probably about 100 people on the way there and back. It is especially popular in the summer, since you are in the water a lot and can use that to cool off. Do note that it can be scorching in the summer, though, and if you go you want to get an early start.

All in all, this hike took us around 7 hours and was a blast from start to finish. The hike is a moderately difficult trip with about 10 miles and 1,000 feet of elevation, but I would say most people could do it. If you are in the LA area, it is worth a trip. Make sure to bring your cash so you can jump off of the bridge if you want to do that, and also remember to bring your swimming trunks so you can partake in all the great river pools. Azusa, CA Things to Do

People always ask, "Where's Azusa?" It sounds more like the name of a musical instrument than a city. Set in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains that line LA basin, Azusa can be quite warm in the summer, and quite cool during the winter nights. Its range of temperatures and its proximity to Los Angeles are both assets for a city known as the home of high tech aeronautical firms.

Azusa is one of Los Angeles County's oldest cities, founded in 1887 and incorporated 1898. 27 miles northeast of the City of Los Angeles, the region that calls itself the Canyon City, was once known for gold discovered in those very canyons. gold was discovered in the San Gabriel Canyon in 1854, and a town named El Doradoville was built at the fork of the San Gabriel with some 2,000 occupant miners who had filed on gold claims along the east fork of the canyon.

$12 million in gold was mined and shipped to various mints throughout the United States during the next 20 years but floods destroyed the town in 1861 and 1862.

The canyon region prone to flooding had been "on the maps" much earlier as a reference in the diary of Father Juan Crespi, who traveled with the Portola Expedition in 1769 north from San Diego in search of Monterey Bay. Crespi described an area with a river and valley three leagues wide and paralleled by a tall mountain range running east and west. One reference to Azusa spoke about a native American community known as Asuksa-nga. It's believed by many that Azusa was derived from the Indian name. A visit to Azusa's Durrell House Museum may provide additional insights and information into Azusa's golden past.

Azusa Foothill Drive-In on historic Route 66 opened on December 18, 1961 and had it's final showing on December 28, 2001.
