Ten foot shark beaten to death after tourist who screamed for ‘papa’ killed in Egypt

A tiger shark has been beaten to death after a tourist was killed at a popular beach destination in Egypt.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was spending the day by the Red Sea in Hurghada when he was mauled to death by the 10ft animal.

His father Yury watched on helplessly as the shark circled around Russian Mr Popov who screamed out “papa, papa” and was dragged under the water.

“We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds,” he told local media.

“What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.”

Witnesses said the shark toyed with Mr Popov’s body in the water for two hours, according to reports.

The beast was then lifted out of the sea in a net and taken to the beach on a small boat where it was bludgeoned to death.

Video footage shows people hitting the fish over the head with what appeared to be a metal pole or a stick.

It appeared to be alive as it thrashed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

Authorities closed off a 46-mile stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Yury added: “This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around.

“It's never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It's just some kind of evil fate."

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions.

However, in 2022 there were two fatal attacks in Hurghada within days, killing an Austrian and a Romanian tourist.

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, boast some of the country’s most renowned beach destinations and are popular with European tourists.

Divers are attracted by the steep drop-offs of coral reefs just offshore, which offer a rich and colourful sea life.

Egypt has in recent years sought to revive the vital tourism sector, which has been hurt by years of political instability, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are large species that reside in tropical and temperate waters and are among sharks most cited by the International Shark Attack File for unprovoked attacks on humans.

Russian man dies after being mauled by shark off Egyptian Red Sea resort

Authorities close off 46-mile stretch of coastline after man attacked by tiger shark near Hurghada

A Russian man has died after being mauled by a shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, Egyptian and Russian authorities have said.

Egypt’s environment ministry said the man was killed on Thursday after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities closed off a 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline, announcing it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try and determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name. Russia’s Tass state news agency said the person killed was a Russian man born in 1999 who lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist.

A video circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling around him, then being dragged under.

A diver who arrived on the scene just after the attack said people had rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

In a statement posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and to strictly adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. In 2022, however, two women – one Austrian and one Romanian – were killed within days of each other in shark attacks at Hurghada.

Sharks killed two female swimmers within hours of each other near a resort in Egypt’s Red Sea, officials said Sunday.

Video showed Friday’s horrific attack on one of the victims, a 68-year-old Austrian — with an onlooker acknowledging bluntly, “She’s going to f–king die,” the Times of Israel reported .

The woman, identified as Elisabeth Sauer, and a Romanian lady in her 40s, were separately found mutilated less than half a mile away from each other near the popular tourist area of Sahl Hasheesh.

Sauer was swimming near the resort when the Mako shark struck, ripping off one of her arms and a leg, the outlet said.

Video showed her swimming away from the shark and toward tourists who threw her a flotation device as the water filled with blood. The tourists complained of the lack of lifeguards during the horror.

Once she was brought to safety, there were attempts to resuscitate her, but she was taken to a hospital and died.

Elisabeth Sauer

A source told Reuters that Sauer had been living in Egypt for five years with her Egyptian husband. Austria’s foreign ministry confirmed to AFP “the death of an Austrian citizen in Egypt” without providing further details.

The identity of the second victim is still unconfirmed.

Red Sea Gov. Amr Hanafi ordered the closure of all beaches in the area for three days after the attacks.

Shark attacks are considered rare in the area but have increasingly occurred in recent years. A 12-year-old Ukrainian male tourist lost his arm and leg in an attack in 2020.

In 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off a Red Sea beach. A similar attack killed a German tourist in 2015.

In 2010, a spate of five attacks in five days unusually close to the shore of tourist hotspot Sharm el-Sheikh killed one German and injured four other foreign tourists.

Latest: Sharks live in the Arabian Gulf – but are they a danger to humans?

The shark that killed a Russian man near the Red Sea town of Hurghada has been caught and is being examined by marine experts looking into the reason for the attack, Egypt's Environment Ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said a tiger shark was responsible for the attack on Thursday, saying it had been seen lurking near the surface in shallow waters beforehand.

Officials said the shark, whose capture and killing was criticised by some experts as unhelpful, was a female that may have been looking for a safe spot to give birth when it killed the 24-year-old Russian.

Authorities ordered all water activities to be suspended for 48 hours from Friday morning along a 60km stretch from the resort of El Gouna all the way south to Soma Bay.

A video clip shared widely online shows the shark after it was caught by fishermen, guided by local marine experts. One clip shows a man punching the shark on the deck of a boat.

The boat's owner, Ahmed Abbas, told a television interviewer that the shark was caught not far from the spot where the attack took place.

The Russian consul general in Hurghada said the victim was born in 1999 and was a resident of Egypt and not a tourist.

A disturbing video of the attack itself went viral on social media. It shows the shark circling the man before pulling him under the water. He surfaces before the shark takes him down again in a pool of blood.

A female voice is heard screaming “Oh, my God!” repeatedly in English as the attack unfolds. A man's voice is heard shouting for help.

The final segment of the clip shows a small boat arriving at the site of the attack seconds after the victim disappears under the water.

“Sharing the video of the Hurghada incident is harmful, malicious and damaging. It hurts livelihoods. Please stop,” tweeted Naguib Sawiris, the richest man in Egypt, whose family has invested heavily in high-end Red Sea resorts that attract millions of tourists every year.

Egypt's Red Sea resorts are a vital part of its tourism industry, which accounts for close to 15 per cent of GDP while employing nearly two million people.

With the country on course for its best tourism season yet, pro-government talk-show hosts sought to play down the significance of the incident.

One host, Sharif Amer, said Egypt has had only 22 shark attacks on record in more than 100 years before Thursday's incident.

Spate of attacks

Mohammed Salem, a senior Environment Ministry official, said most of these happened in the past 15 years and that the prevention of shark attacks along the Red Sea coast has been among the ministry's top priorities.

In July last year two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed in separate incidents south of Hurghada. In 2020, a Ukrainian boy lost an arm and a local tour guide a leg in shark attacks. A Czech tourist was killed by a shark off a Red Sea beach in 2018, three years after a German tourist died in an attack.

In 2010, a spate of shark attacks killed one European tourist and maimed several others in Sharm El Sheikh, on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, across the Red Sea from Hurghada.

Mr Salem said the Red Sea was home to 19 shark species, all of which are known to attack people.

He said the ministry had acquired 60 tracking devices that it would attach to sharks off popular resort locations so that experts could monitor their behaviour to determine what prompts them to attack.

Link to Eid sacrifices?

Sameh Mshaly, an experienced diver in the area, has provided new insight into the recurring shark attacks.

He said these attacks appear to take place every year at the same time in the Hijri calendar because of the presence of livestock boats in the area.

“The shark that attacked the tourist was frenzied, its diet and natural feeding patterns disrupted because of these livestock boats,” Mr Mshaly said in a Facebook post.

Essam Omaria, an official at the Environment Ministry, confirmed that shark behaviour changes significally when food and waste is dumped from ships. This is especially the case in the Red Sea region.

Mr Omaria said it is crucial to understand that the marine ecosystem, which includes predatory sharks, responds to such human-induced changes in a manner that can lead to an increase in incidents of aggression.

A tiger shark was clubbed to death in a savage revenge attack after the beast killed a tourist at a popular resort in the Red Sea.

Tourists watched in horror as Vladimir Popov, 23, was dragged under the water and mauled to death by the 10ft “meat grinder” shark in Egypt’s Hurghada.

Popov’s helpless dad Yury was watching from the shore as his son desperately screamed “papa, papa” while the predator hunted him.

Witnesses said the shark savaged Popov before toying with his body for a harrowing two hours in the water.

“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness can be heard saying in footage of the horrifying incident, the New York Post reported.

Footage then showed the beast being hauled out of the sea on a small boat in a net before being dumped on the beach and ferociously beaten.

The shark appeared to be alive as it writhed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

The video showed a man savagely smashing it over the head with what appeared to be a stick or a metal pole.

Egyptian authorities said they caught the shark that attacked the Russian man.

Researchers are now probing whether the shark was responsible to any previous incidents in the area.

Popov was on a long stay in Egypt - possibly avoiding the call up to Putin’s war in Ukraine.

His dad Yury told local media: “We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds.

“This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds... it is just some kind of evil fate.”

Initial reports suggested Popov was with his girlfriend at the time - but local media reports said she’s currently in Russia.

It’s understood a woman who was also in the water managed to escape.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack.

When the incident happened, voices in the sea pleaded: “Swim away, swim away! Quick! A shark!”

One eyewitness said: “It was about seven metres from the shore.”

Another said: “The shark appeared, and immediately bit the man.

“He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.

“It dragged the body for two hours. It constantly dragged him under the water.”

The victim was named as Vladimir Picture:: East2West

Russian tourists have been told to be vigilant in the popular resort and follow the instructions of hotel staff.

It comes after a 37-year-old tourist was ambushed by a shark at a Red Sea resort in Aqaba, Jordan, in June 2021.

The man was parasailing when he suddenly began to graze the ocean.

A shark then leapt from the water and chomped his leg - and the tourist miraculously managed to not get dragged beneath the water.

He was left brutally bitten and sustained serious injuries from the attack.

And in July last year, a tourist was mauled to death by a shark in Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt.

A Russian beachgoer was killed in a shark attack in Egypt while hanging out near a Red Sea resort town

  • A shark attack in Egypt claimed the life of a young Russian man at a Red Sea resort.
  • The man, born in 1999, had just moved to the region with his father, per independent Russian media.
  • A video appearing to show the horrific attack has been circulating on Russian social media.

Insider Today

A Russian man was killed by a shark at a resort town in Egypt on Thursday.

The man, identified as Popov V., died during a stay at the beach resort town of Hurghada, which lies on the coast of the Red Sea, the local Russian consulate said, per state media agency TASS. He was born in 1999, per the consulate.

Popov was attacked by the shark while at Dream Beach , according to Consul General Viktor Vorpaev.

The beach is popular with tourists, but Vorpaev said Popov was not a tourist and was living in Egypt permanently, TASS reported.

The shark in question was a tiger shark, the Egyptian environment ministry said on Thursday. The ministry banned water activities in the area for the next two days and said the same shark had attacked people before.

Following the attack, the consulate warned Russians in the area to "remain vigilant when in the water" and to follow swimming restrictions and instructions from Egyptian authorities.

The independent Russian outlet Baza reported that Popov had moved with his father to Hurghada and bought an apartment in the town a few months ago.

A neighbor of Popov's told the outlet that the victim was with his father at the shore, and that he was heard calling for his "dad" as the attack unfolded.

A video, which was circulated this week on Russian Telegram channels, appears to show several moments of the attack. In the chilling footage, a man in the water can be heard screaming as a shark circles around him before pulling him under and thrashing near the surface.

"Oh my god," an onlooker shouts repeatedly off-camera.

A witness told Russian television network Ren.TV that rescuers tried to swim to Popov, but that he disappeared before they reached him.

Popov's death received widespread Russian media coverage this week, in light of two other deadly shark attacks in Hurghada last year. In July 2022, a Romanian woman and an Austrian woman were killed within days of each other near the resort town.

Shark are commonly found in the Red Sea, but rarely attack people who swim within approved areas. Two other deadly shark attacks at Red Sea beaches have occurred in 2015 and 2018, per Agence France-Presse.

Second woman killed in shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea

Two women were killed in shark attacks in Egypt’s Red Sea, south of the city of Hurghada, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment said on Sunday.

Two sources told Reuters that the body of a Romanian tourist in her late forties was discovered hours after an attack that left a 68-year-old Austrian woman dead. Both attacks happened within 650 meters of each other, off the coast of Sahl Hasheesh, according to the sources.

The ministry said in its statement that a committee had been formed to examine the circumstances of the attacks and any scientific reasons behind them.

It also mentioned that the Governor of the Red Sea Governorate, Major General Amr Hanafi, has issued an order to suspend all activity in the area surrounding the attacks.

Shark attacks have been relatively rare in Egypt’s Red Sea coastal region in recent years. In 2020, a young Ukrainian boy lost an arm and an Egyptian tour guide lost a leg in a shark attack. In 2010, a spate of shark attacks killed one European tourist and maimed several others off Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula, across the Red Sea from Hurghada.

The tiger shark believed to be responsible for mauling a Russian tourist in Egypt has been killed by local beachgoers.

23-year-old Vladimir Popov was attacked in front of stunned tourists while he was swimming at one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts in the city of Hurghada on Thursday. A distressing video circulating on social media showed the man struggling, screaming and trying to swim away from the shark that was circling around him and attacking. According to Sky News , witnesses claimed that the tiger shark toyed with Mr Popov's body for two hours before dragging him underwater.

Now, the media outlet has reported that local beachgoers in Egypt later drove boats out of the sea and captured in a net what they believed was the animal that killed Mr Popov. A video captured the moment when a group of people brutally clubbed the tiger shark to death as revenge for the Russian tourist.

In the clip, boaters were seen lashing a large tiger shark that they caught to the side of their boat. One man holding a metal pole was also seen repeatedly beating the shark over the head and trying to pry open its mouth.

Meanwhile, as per Sky News , Egypt's Environment Ministry confirmed that the tiger shark had been caught and would be examined in a laboratory to investigate what may have triggered the rare attack. Researchers will investigate whether it was responsible for other incidents.

As of now, it is unclear if this shark and the one filmed getting clubbed are the same animal. The officials have closed off a 74-kilometre stretch of the coastline and announced that it will remain off-limits for those planning to go for swimming or other water sports activities till Sunday.

A shark attacked a British tourist on Friday in the southeastern Caribbean, prompting the government of Trinidad & Tobago to close seven beaches and a marine park. The man was hospitalized in an intensive care unit following the attack, officials said.

The closure included beaches along the northwestern coast of the island of Tobago. The attack occurred at Turtle Beach along Great Courland Bay.

The government said in a statement that shark sightings were reported in the Grafton area and the Buccoo Reef Marine Park. Officials said the closures will allow the Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries to investigate the incident and “neutralize the shark threat, if possible.”

Shark attacks are rare. Last year, there were 69 unprovoked attacks and 22 provoked bites worldwide, along with 14 fatalities, according to the Florida-based International Shark Attack File.

A shark that attacked a Russian tourist is set to be mummified and displayed in an Egyptian museum.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was eaten alive by a shark off a beach at an Egyptian resort in Hurghada in June. The attack was filmed from the shore by horrified onlookers as the 23-year-old screamed: “Papa, save me!”

Some of Mr Popov’s body parts were recovered inside the shark’s stomach, while the rest were recovered by fishermen from the sea.

Specialists at the Institute of Marine Sciences and the Red Sea Reserves have now begun the embalming process in preparation for the shark being placed in the institute’s museum, according to local media reports.

Egyptian authorities said the shark was handed over to researchers to find out the causes of its behaviour and identify whether the animal is related to one that “caused several previous accidents”.

Following the attack on Mr Popov, who had been living in Egypt with his father for several months amid the war in Ukraine, the shark was caught and dragged to land by boat, before being clubbed to death on the beach “in revenge”.

Mr Popov’s father, Yury, told the 112 media outlet of his horror at his son being mauled to death by a shark.

“We went to the beach to relax,” he said. Mr Popov, who is originally from Russia , said the attack “happened in seconds”.

“This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.

“This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around. It’s never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It’s just some kind of evil fate.”

Mr Popov said he would cremate his son and return his ashes to Russia.

Describing the attack, a witness said: “At one point, the shark appeared, and immediately bit this man. Rescuers saw this and began to start the boat. He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.

“And the shark dragged the body for two hours. It constantly dragged him under the water.”

Another woman is believed to have been pulled out of the water after being close to where Mr Popov was killed. It is not known if she was a relative of the 23-year-old.

Witnesses said the victim’s girlfriend had been in the water at the time of the attack. Russian reports say she is safe and has returned to Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack, the Daily Mail reported.

A MAN has been rushed to the hospital after he was mauled by a shark in a horror attack.

The beachgoer was horrifically bitten by the deadly beast at the Bombie Surfing Spot in western Australia at around 12.30pm on Saturday.

A deadly shark mauled a beachgoer in west Australia

Cops said paramedics were not alerted about the horror attack until the man presented himself at the hospital.

He was immediately admitted - and is now in a stable condition, a WA Country health spokeswoman said in a statement.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has launched an investigation after the incident was reported to authorities.

“Further information will be provided as it becomes available,” it said in a statement.

A local surfer said he was "shocked" by the incident and told The West Australian it was "all part of the game".

Other beachgoers and surfers have now been advised to take additional caution and adhere to beach closures.

While it was the first shark sighting at the Bombie Surfing Spot in almost a month, there have been at least 24 other shark sightings across west Australia in just the past day, local media reports.

It comes after a tourist was left with horror injuries after being reportedly mauled by a shark at a popular honeymoon hotspot .

Doctors battled to save the man's leg after the beast "almost bit it off" as he swam in Noonu Atoll, in the  Maldives .

Horror pictures show the holidaymaker in hospital where he reportedly underwent surgery.

They also appear to show his wounded leg and foot.

Reports on Telegram channels say the tourist was Russian, but the same outlets on news websites do not specify his nationality.

Telegram channel 112 said that the man was "happily splashing in the azure ocean near Noonu Atoll".

He was described as a wealthy guest at a five-star luxury resort in the tropical paradise, the Russian media reported.

The hotel, where rooms start at £700 a night, previously said it was unaware of a shark attack involving one of its guests on its property.

“We have not received any reports of a shark attack on a person," the resort reportedly stated.

Meanwhile, a dramatic video shows the terrifying moment a shark attacked a group of tourist divers in the Maldives .

The massive fish made a beeline for one diver before moving on to the next, smashing into each with its powerful head and snout.

According to reports, the attack took place recently in the Maldives and involved divers who had little experience with sharks.

In the video, which was shared to Telegram by local news channel MvCrisis on February 3, the divers were reportedly filmed in the moments after attempting to free a shark tangled in a rope or net.

It is understood no one was badly injured.

There are about 100 shark attacks around the world each year, with scores of both oblivious and risk-taking swimmers mauled by the fish.

2023 fatal shark attacks

THE ten fatal shark attacks of 2023 was double the five in the previous year, with four occurring in Australia.

These are the locations of the 10 fatal shark attacks of 2023:

  • Australia: 4
  • California, US: 1
  • Hawaii, US: 1
  • New Caledonia: 1

Ninety-one people were bitten by sharks in 2023 and 10 of the attacks were fatal, according to a new report from the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Recently, on December 28,  a teenage boy was mauled to death  in a horror shark attack off a popular South Australian beach.

The young swimmer's body was pulled from the water near  Ethel Beach  in the Innes National Park at about 1.30pm local time.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but it was too late. His body was recovered from the water.

Researchers at the University of Florida found that great white, tiger, and bull sharks killed the majority of swimmers last year.

Two people were killed in  California  and  Hawaii , with other confirmed deaths in the  Bahamas ,  Egypt ,  Mexico , and New Caledonia.

Four people were killed in  Australia  in unprovoked shark attacks.

Bounty of $10,000 on shark that attacked Brit just like in Jaws is withdrawn

A bounty of $10,000, like in the film Jaws, was put up by authorities in the Caribbean island of Tobago creating a stir following a shark attack on a British tourist from Hertfordshire before it was withdrawn

The shark in the iconic film Jaws

  • 11:47, 27 Apr 2024

A TT$10,000 bounty was offered for anyone able to catch the shark that attacked a Brit tourist in Tobago before being withdrawn by authorities.

The man, identified by local officials as a 64-year-old from Hertfordshire, was savaged 10 metres off the shore near the Starfish Hotel in Courland Bay, on the north coast of Tobago on Friday morning. He sustained injuries to his left hand, left thigh, and stomach following the attack involving a bull shark estimated to be eight to 10 ft long and two ft wide, the Tobago House of Assembly said.

And following the attack the Tobago House of Assembly issued a call for all registered fishermen on the island to mobilise their crews with a $10,000 Trinidadian dollars (£1,180) bounty for anyone who caught the shark. The announcement recalled the bounty that was offered in the film 1975 film Jaws where $10,000 was offered for anyone to catch a shark that killed a young woman off the coast of New England, in the US. It led to an amateur shar-hunting frenzy before the predator was finally killed.

But Tobago Chief Secretary Farley Augustine gave a Facebook press briefing on Friday evening where he claimed there had been confusion over the reward and that it was being retracted. "I've asked for the ad to be retracted effective immediately and I've asked that the fishers work along with the Coast Guard, work along with the divers and other stakeholders to expertly man the area," he said.

"While the department is recalling the advertisement, I'm letting you know that there are experts who will expertly treat the matter of dealing with the bull shark." The announcement of the reward and then its removal led to plenty of criticism online while a conservation group also said of the dangers to the shark habitat by hunting before the retraction was made.

Shark Guardian wrote on Facebook: “Yesterday (26 April 2024), a British national fell victim to a non fatal shark encounter while enjoying a vacation in Tobago. Such incidents, although distressing, are exceedingly rare, often resulting from human error or misjudgement. It's essential to remember that sharks, ancient creatures with a history spanning over 400 million years, play a vital role in maintaining the health and equilibrium of ocean ecosystems.

"In response to the attack, the Tobago House of Assembly, led by Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, has announced a $10,000 bounty on the shark responsible. However, this decision could have severe consequences, as it may encourage indiscriminate hunting of sharks by fishermen and others. Given that sharks already face significant threats, with an estimated 100 million individuals lost annually, such actions could further jeopardize their survival."

Meanwhile, Mr Augustine said the shark victim was stable and “doing well”, but remained in an intensive care unit and kept under sedation at Scarborough General Hospital. He went on: “Some reattachments were done, of fingers for example, and hopefully that will save those fingers.

“We know that there’s significant wounds on one of his legs that cannot be completely closed, but he will require extensive work. The task at this time for our health professionals is really to stabilise and ensure that we can save life and limb as much as possible.” Mr Augustine added that the local government was working closely with the British High Commission.
