Animals of the Amazon rainforest Tambopata

Hoatzin Punk chickens are easily heard while your boat passes along the Sandoval lake. If you hear a lot of whistling, grunting and vegetative sounds, you have probably stumbled upon the elaborate mating ritual of one of the Amazon’s rarest birds, the hoatzin. This is a large wild chicken with a blue face and a large crest on the head (hence the nickname ‘chicken punk’).

Scientists have been unable to classify this bird as a member of any other avian family, mainly because of the two claws the young have in each wing. To evade predators, hoatzin chicks will fall from the nest into the river and use their claws to help them recover the muddy banks.

The clawed wing is a feature that no other airborne creature has since the pterodactyl possessed. The appearance of the bird is overcome by its terrible smell, which may well be the first indication that they are close. They also have bad taste, so they are rarely hunted. What a great experience. The rain pour out, my husband lost his cell phone so, the moods become rocky but Jonathan, our tour guide, managed intelligently to assist us with our stay. He is very professional, knowledgeable on what he is doing, fluent in English and very flexible with the situation. He is also a very high tech that carried a high end binocular to have a better vision from a distance. The people at the lodge are very warm and friendly people. The wild pig they named Pumba, greeted us like she is a dog. She is so adorable and very sweet village pet they raised. We got attached to Pumba because of her personality. She greeted all guest that arrived, how cool is that! And, The food... exceeded our expectations. They fed us a three course meals 3 times a day. It's plenty, delicious, healthy and authentic. We wished we have more days to stay. We got spoiled in this lodge! Thank you so much for the memory and experience!

The best experience of my life, couldn’t recommend enough! The activities, lodge and food were amazing. A highlight was seeing a family of squirrel monkeys. We can’t speak highly enough of our tour guide Franklin. He was so passionate and informative and made the experience even more exciting.

Had a great experience and program (although they changed the order compared to what was shown). My guides were really helpful and spoke English really well (I had Fernando and Luiz). I would recommend staying as long as possible because the weather conditions may not be ideal and as with nature, you need patience and luck in order to see wildlife.

The tour was great with all the activities and experiences. Our guide Fernando was a highlight and we really enjoyed the adventure. There was some disorganisation and confusion with the company for the itinerary we had booked and what they had scheduled us for, so be careful when checking in to check the details. The lodge and rooms were lovely, but some fans would make a big difference to comfort in the oppressive heat.

What people love about tambopata tours.

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!

The Tambopata jungle tour was amazing. Great experience in the jungle life. Foods were great and hospitality was great as well. We were taken care very well during the unrest civil protesting in Peru. They always make sure we are safe and managed to get us to the airport early on time.

If you like primitive camping this is the trip for you. Disconnecting was just what I needed to reset. Make sure you bring long pants and plenty of insect spray if mosquitoes bother you. List of animals I saw: caman, river otter family, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, macaws, cabibarras, piranhas, tucanes and many more. Words can not express how much I loved it.

• Pick you up from your hotel or Puerto Maldonado Airport
• Repacking and storage  at the Office in Town
• 1 hour by minivan along the Interoceanic Highway and 30 minutes along the dirty road that links the Philadelphia River Port
• 30 minutes motor boat navigation to reach the Lodge
• Welcome drink and Lunch at the Lodge
• Jungle Walk to spot some wildlife such as monkeys, and wild pigs, and interpretation of the rainforest by your guide.
• Night Walk and Cayman spotting, we will go to look for White and black Caymans along the river bank-
• Dinner at the Lodge

Collpas Inn Lodge - Chuncho Clay Lick

• Wake up around 5:00 AM and Boat Embarkation.
• Riverboat up the Tambopata for 1 hour and 30 minutes. there will be good chances to spot shore birds, capybaras, White caimans, If lucky enough the jaguar.
• Arrive at the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick to spot parrots, and macaws: Green, red, blue, and yellow birds all around us, flying and making loud noises.
• Breakfast will be served in front of the Clay Lick to optimize time.
• Macaws observation at the Clay Lick from around  6:30 am to 11:00 AM
• Return Boat Trip to the Lodge
• Lunch at the Lodge
•  Navigation along the Tambopata River or a small stream to look for some wildlife.
• Optional night Walk.

• Wake up with the sounds of the birds and probably howler monkeys.

Myself and my partner went on the 4 day Tambopata tour from Puerto Maldonado and had the most amazing time! The staff from Wild Watch Peru were incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The tour is well worth doing, I only wish we could have stayed longer. Our stay in the rainforest was unforgettable. Everything from the wildlife to the accomodation to the hospitality and expertise of the staff was very impressive. We felt at home in the lodge and were treated very very well. We saw a great variety of wildlife including monkeys, macaws, toucans, butterflies, hummingbirds, caimans and capybaras to name a few. We were able to see so many animals in large part due to the skill of our guide Jorge in spotting (and sometimes just by hearing) the animals.

We had a wonderful time and enjoy our trip to Amazon lodge. The activity was interesting, we were surprised by how busy we were all the time. The clay lick visit is a highlight of the trip, although the weather wasn't the best. The food was delicious too. Our cabin was spacious and private. Especially, we like our guide Jesus, who is a very knowledgeable, funny, intelligent, and motivated guy. Highly recommend!

From beginning to end this tour is amazing. Luis was super helpful from my first email until we got to Tambopata, He organized our tour to exactly what we wanted to see and everything was set up and ready to go when we arrived. Our guide, Ricardo was the man. He knew about every single animal we saw and was amazing at spotting them. I don't think we'd have seen 1/4 of what we did if it hadn't been for his keen eye. You can tell he loves wildlife and the area. It was by far the best part of our trip to Peru

I highly ecommend this tour operator! Truly experienced guides and experts finding elusive animals, knowing every bird by song, flight pattern or sight and by finding you the big stuff, Cayman, Deer, Giant Otters, Monkeys and Capybaras to name but a few. The hikes were fun. The lodging was perfect and the food varied and delicious. I wish that I could have gone on a longer trip.

On Tambopata Reserve tours, you can find many clay licks, which large macaw parrots, tapir, and other animals visit to replenish salt and detoxify forest foods. The region contains more clay licks than other Amazon areas and increases chances of seeing predators like jaguar.

At clay licks, guests can see hundreds of colorful parrots and lodges usually provide hides where guests can get a better view without disturbing the birds. You will also take tours into the reserve to see different monkeys, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

The forest protects large carnivores like puma and jaguar, and many endangered animals like giant river otters, giant armadillos, black spider monkeys, pink river dolphin, anaconda, and yellow-headed river turtles. Because the protected areas are joined, wildlife is free to move between the Tambopata, Bahuaja Sonene, and Madidi zones.

Although not located inside the Tambopata National Reserve, another deep lodge in the area to consider from Puerto Maldonado is the Heath River Wildlife Center. This lodge is located at the edge of Tambopata between the Madidi National Park in Bolivia and the Tambopata National Reserve in Peru. From the lodge you have access to an excellent large macaw clay lick where you can take amazing photos (due to the floating hide used to view the macaws) and a tapir lick to see the Amazon’s largest land mammal.

From Heath River Wildlife Center, you will head out with your professional Amazon guide to spot many different animals like several different monkeys, colorful birds, and reptiles and hopefully some larger wildlife like anteaters, spider monkeys and capybara. Tambopata National Reserve Guide: History, Tours, Maps, and Facts

Tambopata National Reserve is a 274,690 hectares area of land in Peru that is protected and preserved. Tambopata National Reserve means a high structure or building. The word “Tambo” means structure or building, and “pata” means high place. Inside the national reserve, stands the 50-meter tall Ceiba tree, 40-meter Brazil Nut tree, and 500-year-old ironwood trees.

Tambopata National Reserve houses many wildlife species, including rare and endangered ones. Additionally, there are a lot of plant species that are found in the area that were and still are being used for medicinal purposes. The government prohibited the people that wanted to lodge and hunt in 1977.

Two years later, Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone (TCRZ) was formed. In the same year, 1990, various biologists and conservationists encouraged the people to protect the area against development. Eventually, a decree made by President Alberto Fujimori in 2000 aims to secure various ecosystems of the tropical jungle for its preservation.  

In the past, the Inca Empire lived in the area and used the resources to produce their own medicines. The Inca Empire, known as the South American Indians, was prominent in Peru between c. 1400 and 1533 CE. Their population reached up to the west of South America.

The Empire was considered the largest in America and the world. It has flourished mainly because of its arts and architecture which are still valued up until now. Their civilization extended to western South America, from Quito in the north up to Santiago in the south.

Now, there is a native tribe that is still living in the area. The native tribe is called Esa Eja People that are known to be hunters, fishermen, and farmers. Their tribe has three native communities called Infierno, Palma Real, and Sonene. Up until now, tourists are going to get a glimpse of the tribe along with other attractions and activities. 

What is the Tambopata National Reserve History?

Back in 1990, various biologists and conservationists tried to persuade people to preserve the Tambopata area from being developed. They wanted to protect the area mainly because of Tambopata it and still was one of the last remaining and largest regions of immaculate jungle. There are some people that are staying and living in Tambopata’s remote areas.

These people are called “Esa Eja People”, loosely translated as people. There are known three native communities of the people namely Infierno, Palma Real, and Sonene. The native people work as hunters, fishermen, and farmers. Tambopata was officially established on September 4, 2000, as a government resolution to protect and preserve the ecosystems of the tropical jungle. Additionally, it is used to encourage the viable use of its resources by the native people who have inhabited the buffer zone nearby the area.

Panning is the procedure of separating the particles of greater gravity from soil or gravel by washing them in a pan of water. The process creates discoloration and turbidity in the water.

GETTING To the Peruvian Amazon of Tambopata

How to Get to Tambopata

The amazon jungle offers great possibilities to see wildlife and has amazing adventures, and there’s no better area to travel to than visiting a national reserve in peru. but how to get to tambopata here, we give you a few basic steps on how to get it there ., step one: by air.

To get to the  Tambopata National Reserve   and most of the area’s jungle lodges, you first need to go to Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado is the gateway city to the reserve and the capital of the Madre de Dios state. There are daily incoming flights to Puerto Maldonado . These flights arrive from Lima or Cuzco in Peru, at least three times a day.

The  flights from Lima  depart from the Jorge Chavez Airport Domestic Flight Terminal. The trip takes about one hour and a half, and most of these flights stop in Cuzco before continuing on to Puerto Maldonado.  Flights from Cuzco  depart from the domestic terminal of the Velasco Astete Airport, and the trip takes around 30 minutes.

To take an expedition with us, please note we have a fixed departure to/from Puerto Maldonado. To fit on it please book a flight arriving before 1:00 pm. If you will visit Tambopata Research Center please book a departure flight after 12:30 midday on your last day of adventure.

Step Two: By Land

Once you arrive in Puerto Maldonado when looking for Amazon rainforest places to stay, you can book with us , but most other lodges and tour companies will be waiting for you at the airport’s arrivals terminal. From there, you hop on a bus for a quick stop at the company’s office, before continuing on to the river port.

On our expeditions usually, this means a bus ride of about 45 minutes  to an hour.

Step Three: By Water

Once at the port, you’ll  board boats  — comfortable motorized canoes called  botes  — to continue to the lodges along the river where your lodge is located. In our case, all our lodges are located along the   Tambopata River . Most lodges are one to 3.5 hours away by boat from the port in this river, while in the Madre de Dios, you can find lodges very close to the city around 15 to 20 minutes away from the river port.

Boat schedules are designed to meet your flights, but you shouldn’t arrive after 13:00 (1:00 p.m.)  because then you might have to travel by boat in the dark to get to your lodge. Keep in mind, there is a legal basis of river transportation where lodges have a limited hour to navigate in the river for travelers’ safety. In our case, we have only 1 departure at 1 pm from our Puerto Maldonado offices.

Boat rides are great and are actually a favorite activity for many travelers. On the beautiful, pleasantly breezy ride, you’ll probably see Capybara  and  Caiman  — and with lots of luck, even a  Jaguar !
