The all-new Toyota C-HR Plug-in Hybrid

The introduction of the Toyota C-HR Plug-in completes a fully electrified powertrain line-up for the all-new mid-size SUV range and reinforces Toyota’s multi-path technology strategy for reducing emissions on the route to eventual carbon neutrality

The 2.0-litre Plug-in (PHEV) joins the recently launched 1.8 and 2.0-litre hybrid electric models in the line-up and like them benefits from the enhanced efficiency and performance enabled by fifth generation Toyota hybrid technology.

The breadth of choice reflects Toyota’s belief that customers need a variety of options for affordable and practical vehicles to accelerate the pace of CO2 reduction today and ensure a successful transition to zero emission mobility in the future.

The Toyota C-HR Plug-in provides the smooth, effortless drive of a pure electric vehicle with a driving range of up to 41 miles – in excess of the typical daily distance covered by most UK motorists. It has a dual character, automatically switching to hybrid electric running when its EV battery is depleted, giving drivers the reassurance and flexibility of Toyota’s class-leading hybrid technology and ensuring constant efficiency on every journey.

A full press kit covering all versions of the all-new Toyota C-HR, including technical and equipment specifications, is available here on the Toyota UK media website.

Agile and responsive performance

  • Best-in-class PHEV powertrain providing EV daily driving capability and the flexibility of a hybrid electric system
  • Powertrain settings tuned to provide throttle response and acceleration feel to suit European tastes
  • No compromise in handling thanks to application of new technologies, weight-saving and increased body stiffness

A best-in-class PHEV powertrain combines with optimised handling, improved ride comfort and better braking for a more powerful, fun and engaging driving experience in the Toyota C-HR Plug-in. The latest Toyota hybrid technology delivers a class-leading balance of increased power and low emissions.

The new Plug-in model has a dual character. On the one hand, it has the responsive performance and smooth ride of a true EV on everyday journeys, with an all-electric range of up to 41 miles (WLTP combined) – further than the average daily distance covered by typical UK and European motorists.

The PHEV powertrain comprises a 161bhp (163 DIN hp.120kW) electric motor on the front axle, with energy stored in a high-output 13.6kWh lithium-ion battery, alongside a 2.0-litre engine with 150bhp (152 DIN hp/112 kW). Together these elements produce a total system power of 220bhp (223 Din hp/164kW), enabling 0-62mph acceleration in 7.4 seconds*.

2024-c-hrphev-dpl-det-005-scaled.jpeg

Performance is matched by efficiency with fuel consumption from 353.1mpg and WLTP combined cycle CO2 emissions from 19g/km, A clutch-less dual motor system eliminates friction and wear, which means the Toyota C-HR Plug-in uses significantly less fuel when running in hybrid electric mode compared to most competitor PHEVs.

In common with the other electrified powertrains in the new Toyota C-HR range, the Plug-in has been tuned to suit UK and European tastes, using real-time data from drivers across the continent. For example, accelerator pedal input sensitivity has been recalibrated for easy control and rapid response.

The all-new Toyota C-HR builds on the engaging handling of the original model and where the Plug-in version is concerned there is no compromise on driving dynamics, thanks in part to the higher torsional rigidity and reduced vehicle mass provided by the car’s Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA).

In a first for any Toyota vehicle worldwide, the Toyota C-HR Plug-in features ZF frequency sensitive control (FSC) to enhance handling and ride comfort. The hydro-mechanical system increases damping force at low frequencies to gain superior body control, in roll and pitch, and during cornering. At high frequency, damping is reduced to improve ride comfort.

Enhancements have also been made to braking performance. The new Plug-in is fitted with 17-inch callipers and discs, together with the latest vehicle stability control systems.  The 1.8 and 2.0-litre hybrids have 16-inch twin callipers and discs; all models have an electric parking brake and a redesigned brake pedal to help improve control and produce a more natural braking feel.

A combination of measures produces class-leading acoustic comfort. Engine speeds in motorway driving have been reduced by up to 500rpm and noise disturbance is reduced with the use of vibration damping and noise insulation. The car has a 0.318 drag coefficient, achieved through aerodynamic details to reduce the car’s frontal area and refine the body shape, including the underbody, to optimise airflow.

PHEV technology and control settings

  • PHEV-specific development for greater efficiency and driving comfort
  • Predictive Efficient Drive raises efficiency by optimising battery usage, in line with road and traffic conditions
  • New geofencing function automatically optimises battery use to maximise EV driving capability in low emission zones

The new Toyota C-HR Plug-in is the result of dedicated development to make the most of the specific opportunities and requirements presented by a PHEV.

To raise the already impressive level of PHEV efficiency, the vehicle uses a pump to draw heat from air outside the car, as well as making use of engine heat, to support the air conditioning system in winter. This reduces power usage and thus helps improve the EV driving range.

The Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) modular platform allows the PHEV battery to located beneath the cabin floor, helping lower the car’s centre of gravity. This contributes to agile handling as well as avoiding loss of cabin or boot space.

An additional damper at the front of the vehicle enhances cabin acoustics and ride comfort, while additional TNGA components add to the rear suspension increase rigidity and improve handling.

2024-c-hrphev-dpl-int-002-scaled.jpeg

The Predictive Efficient Drive system with its new geo-fencing function helps the driver keep one step ahead of what the journey may have in store. The system combines analysis of road and traffic conditions with ongoing learning about the driver’s regular routes and driving style to automatically optimise the use of the car’s all-electric mode. The geo-fencing function goes further by optimising battery use across the entire trip by analysing the planned route and automatically switching between EV and hybrid vehicle (HV) modes when travelling outside low emission zones (LEZs). This maximises the EV driving range available when entering an LEZ.

Regeneration boost offers a “one-pedal” style of driving, providing up to 80 per cent of the braking requirement, depending on which of three settings – gentle, medium and strong – is selected, making for easier driving in traffic.

Adaptive Hill Control Logic applies motor assistance when travelling downhill, reducing the need for the driver to use the brake pedal. It also modifies acceleration on undulating roads, based on the incline, for more intuitive performance.

2024-c-hrphev-dpl-int-010-scaled.jpeg

Four powertrain operation modes are available: EV, auto EV/HV, HV and charging.

EV mode  engages by default when the vehicle is started. The system will continue to operate in EV mode up to the limit of its EV driving range, regardless of how hard the accelerator is used.

The driver can select  auto EV/HV mode , in which the engine will engage when extra power is needed, returning to EV running afterwards.

HV mode  helps maintain the battery’s state of charge and is engaged automatically when battery charge runs low. It can also be manually selected by the driver.

2024-c-hrphev-dpl-int-012-scaled.jpeg

The  charging mode  can be used when the driver wants to charge the EV battery when driving, using power generated by the engine.

In addition to the Drive Mode Select systems familiar Normal, Eco and Sport options, the Toyota C-HR also offers a Custom option which allows the driver to select their preferred powertrain, steering and air conditioning settings. These personalised settings can be saved for selection whenever desired.

The Toyota C-HR Plug-in has a 6.6kW on-board charger which allows the battery to be charged from zero to 100 per cent in less than two-and-a-half hours using the optional tri-phase cable and a wallbox power supply. A Mode 2 charging cable is supplied as standard for charging using a domestic electricity supply.

The MyToyota app can be used to start and stop charging remotely when the vehicle is plugged in. The app shows live progress during charging and the car’s EV range. The owner can create a schedule using the app, so the battery can be recharged at the most appropriate time, for example overnight to take advantage of lower energy tariffs.

MyToyota also provides access to the Toyota Charging Network, one of the largest pan-European EV charging networks. Users can search for charging station locations and see real-time availability, charging speeds and compatible plug types. A subscription service is available via the app to use and pay for charging services.

Quick verdict

The Toyota C-HR impresses with excellent real-world efficiency, a plush cabin, and an interior filled with tech that’s easy to use. Being a modern Toyota, it comes standard with many safety features, and – like the original – its all-hybrid engine lineup means low emissions. Credit should be given to the designers for keeping the same bold styling that made the Mk1 such a hit, because this Mk2 version looks just as dramatic.

The 2.0-litre model we’ve driven so far provides plenty of performance for everyday driving, but it only comes in top GR Sport specification, which means it’s a very expensive option compared with rivals. The CH-R Plug-in Hybrid is also very expensive and is best suited to company car drivers to help keep their tax bills low. Overall, we think the well-equipped Design trim would be better value for money, even if you have to go for the less powerful 1.8 Hybrid model.

Toyota C-HR: price, specs and rivals

Did you know that the name Toyota C-HR stands for Coupe High Rider? Well, now you do. The C-HR is in its second generation, following on from the popular first-generation Toyota C-HR , sold between 2016 and 2023. It's an efficient hybrid SUV available in full and plug-in hybrid forms, and it competes with the likes of the Hyundai Kona , Honda HR-V , Kia Niro , Nissan Qashqai , Renault Captur , and Suzuki S-Cross .

Used car tests

  • Used Toyota C-HR review

For the first time, the hybrid C-HR gains a company-car-friendly plug-in hybrid version, following the lead of its bigger Toyota RAV4 sibling. The PHEV C-HR comes with a 13.6kWh battery pack that should be good for an all-electric range of up to 41 miles.

There are two traditional full hybrid choices: a 138bhp 1.8 Hybrid and a 194bhp 2.0 Hybrid. All engines come with a CVT automatic gearbox .

All C-HRs are well-equipped. The entry-level Icon trim gets 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay , a reversing camera, LED head lights, and a seven-inch multi-information display for the driver. Toyota Safety Sense also comes as standard, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and road sign recognition.

Mid-range Design is the pick of the range because it adds front and rear parking sensors to ease the stress of slotting it into a tight car park bay, along with several other niceties. You get 18-inch alloys, heated front seats with power lumbar adjustment, wireless phone charging, rear-cross traffic alert, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The poshest Excel trim adds 19-inch alloys, LED adaptive headlights, part artificial leather and suede upholstery, a panoramic glass roof, a 360-degree camera system, a driver monitoring system, and front cross-traffic alert.

Those seeking something with a sportier look (and the more powerful 2.0-litre) might consider the GR Sport, which gets 20-inch alloys, and a contrasting roof colour. There are some additional goodies from the 64-colour ambient interior lighting, a more advanced Naneo air filtration system to filter out finer particles in the climate control system, and an uprated nine-speaker JBL sound system.

The only major downside of the C-HR is the rather stiff pricing. This Hyundai Kona -sized car starts near where that rival stops, at just under £31,500. Fancy the more powerful 2.0-litre? Then you’ll need over £40,500 for a GR Sport model. Pricing for the plug-in hybrid is slightly more reasonable, at just over £39,000, but for similar money, you could have our preferred version of the Kona Electric that’ll be even better for company car drivers paying Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax.

Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid GR Sport side panning shot

Engines, performance & drive

The Toyota C-HR is good to drive, with tight body control, direct steering, and a well-judged ride. Engine noise is still an issue while accelerating hard up to motorway speeds, but with a more powerful hybrid system, it doesn’t take as long to get up to cruising speed where you can lift off and let the engine settle down. The background hum of wind and road noise is no worse than rivals. Read more about the Toyota C-HR's engines, performance and drive…

MPG, emissions & running costs

Fuel efficiency and emissions for all regular hybrid Toyota C-HR models are much better than those of its petrol and diesel rivals. The plug-in hybrid will be an appealing company car choice, especially with up to 41 miles of electric range. You must stick with the least expensive Design trim PHEV version to avoid the surcharge for cars costing over £40,000, though.  Read more about the Toyota C-HR's MPG, emissions and running costs…

Interior, design & technology

The designers of the C-HR need to be applauded for not toning down the striking looks of the original model when penning this latest version. It looks at its best in a bi-tone colour, which comes as standard with the GR Sport trim. Digital screens and plush materials abound inside the C-HR, and we approve of the continued use of physical controls for frequently used functions. Read more about the Toyota C-HR's interior, design and technology…

Boot space, comfort & practicality

While there have been some improvements, the C-HR continues to pose difficulties for those looking for a practical SUV – especially those transporting small children in car seats – due to the sloping rear roof line and rear doors that don’t open as wide as rivals. Its overall boot volume also trails its competitors, and the PHEV versions have even less capacity than the best superminis. Read more about the Toyota C-HR's boot space, comfort and practicality…

Reliability & safety

The C-HR gained the maximum five-star safety rating from crash test experts Euro NCAP, making it a safer place to put your loved ones than the four-star rated Hyundai Kona or Honda HR-V . There’s also lots of safety assistance technology provided as standard to keep you out of trouble, and we suspect that Toyota’s well-earned reputation for dependability should see the latest C-HR do well in the Driver Power customer satisfaction survey. Read more about the Toyota C-HR’s reliability and safety…

Should you buy a Toyota C-HR?

If you want extreme styling, appreciate long equipment lists, and need something highly efficient, the Toyota C-HR is a fine hybrid SUV choice. The fact it drives well and can now be had with a plug-in hybrid option just makes the deal sweeter.

However, the same compromises as before remain, with a gloomy interior for those in the back and a restrictive rear door opening that makes it harder to live with as an everyday family car. What’s more, it is more expensive than the highly accomplished Hyundai Kona, and even though there will be a PHEV model, company car drivers will be better off opting for the similarly priced all-electric Kona Electric that’ll save you even more money.

Toyota C-HR Dynamic review

The toyota c-hr is a bold crossover with hybrid power, and a two-tone colour scheme helps the range-topping dynamic stand out even more.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

The compact crossover class is booming, with people drawn to the SUV-like driving appeal of cars like the Nissan Qashqai and SEAT Ateca . Toyota has become a major player in the class with the C-HR, and the sporty Dynamic trim is particularly desirable.

The C-HR badge stands for ‘Coupe High Rider’ and the car certainly turn heads, with bold styling that makes it look part coupe, part off-roader and part concept car. It’s an outlandish design and helps Toyota cut through the busy compact crossover class. It's even more attention grabbing in Dynamic guise, thanks to black 18-inch alloy wheels and a contrasting black roof that stands out against standard metallic paint.

Best hybrid SUVs to buy now

Up to 75% of customers are expected to choose the hybrid model, which uses the same 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain with a CVT transmission found in the Prius. While this combination works well in that car, the verdict is not so favourable for the C-HR. Where the Prius is smooth and effortless, the C-HR is droney. Relying heavily on its petrol engine, even gentle applications of the throttle send the revs soaring.

It would be perhaps forgivable if the C-HR sounded good. But it doesn’t. The petrol engine has a coarse and intrusive note and Sport mode makes things even worse; it sharpens the throttle response but this only encourages the engine to work harder, sooner. We’d perhaps forgive the noisy soundtrack if the performance wasn’t leisurely. It takes 11 seconds, for instance, to accelerate from 0-62mph.

Perhaps sweetening the hybrid as an offering is the economy of 58.8mpg and 86g/km CO2 emissions, making it especially appealing for company-car drivers. Drive it gently and the C-HR will even drive in zero-emissions electric mode for short distances.

If you don’t need the hybrid version, however, then the C-HR’s only other engine option is a 1.2-litre turbo petrol. With 114bhp it’s no rocketship, but with a six-speed manual gearbox it’s a much more engaging car to drive. This version also gets the option of four-wheel-drive and a CVT gearbox. Fuel economy for the petrol ranges from 34 to 41.5mpg, depending which version you go for.

Despite its tall profile and Prius underpinnings, the C-HR is actually very adept to drive. There’s plenty of grip, the steering is sweet and it keeps its body upright through corners.

Inside, the C-HR is just as bold. There’s a wraparound dash with blue insert and a large tablet-style infotainment screen that dominates the cabin. A repeated diamond pattern in the overhead courtesy lights and headlining add interest. You’ll either love it or hate it.

The quality of the materials and the fit and finish of the cabin is good but some of the materials are a bit unfashionable. Despite the rakish profile, there’s plenty of space inside. The thick C-pillars mean rear seat passengers might feel claustrophobic but there’s no arguing about head or leg room. From the driver’s seat, the large windscreen and high seats give an excellent view of the road but the view out the back is compromised by the design. The boot is a decent size and comparable with rivals, with 377 litres of space.

When it comes to choosing the equipment level, Dynamic trim sits at the top of the tree above Icon, Design and Excel, and along with its special wheels and roof, you also get LED headlights, LED foglights and powered lumbar support for the front seats. Certain kit is still optional, from Toyota's Leather Pack for leather seats and a JBL Pack adding a JBL stereo with nine speakers.

Prices for the C-HR start from just over £22,000, but the Dynamic trim costs from £29,450 with a Hybrid powertrain, making it relatively pricey for the class. and three trim levels are available: Icon, Excel and Dynamic. There’s plenty of kit as standard, with all cars featuring climate and cruise control as well as adaptive cruise and autonomous emergency braking.

Verdict - 3.5/5.0

The C-HR’s looks are divisive – you’ll either buy one because you love the way it looks or you’ll avoid it at all costs. If you absolutely must have a C-HR, then We’d avoid the disappointing hybrid in favour of the 1.2-litre turbo petrol for its more harmonious engaging driving experience. You’ll pay a little more in road tax company-car tax and fuel but we think that’s a price worth paying. The C-HR is also surprisingly fun to drive and has plenty of space. That sci-fi design makes its presence felt in the cabin, too. Compared to rivals, this is a bold crossover that will turn heads. The C-HR looks best in Dynamic trim but it's also quite expensive in this form, so you can easily save a few grand by opting for the Design trim instead, without missing out on essentials.

Toyota C-HR Hybrid: 4 reasons why this should be your first hybrid car

With the petrol/diesel doomsday now set in stone, hybrids are about to take off in a big way – and the Toyota C-HR Hybrid could be the perfect entry point for your eco-revolution.

Few cars have been so frequently lampooned as the Toyota Prius, an early-to-market hybrid that struggled to convince petrolheads when it launched. Now the Prius has flooded Britain’s roads (cheers, Uber), and it seems there’s no escaping the steady creep of hybrid motors in the UK.

Toyota’s eco-friendly pedigree continues with the Toyota C-HR, which has recently been upgraded with its own full-hybrid powertrain – a 1.8L 2ZR-FEX engine that runs on a mix of petrol and pure electric power.

With a bold design and the promise of greener operation, the Toyota C-HR Hybrid is a sure bet for winning over reforming hybrid sceptics. Here are four reasons why the Toyota C-HR Hybrid could be the ultimate gateway drug to cleaner driving.

1. It has a space-age design

Forget the hybrid stuff for a minute; the Toyota C-HR’s biggest pull for many people will be its striking, space-age design.

Car makers have a habit of making their hybrid and all-electric models look a little futuristic, but the Toyota C-HR looks like it’s been pulled straight from the set of Tron. All versions of the car feature the same bold, angular exterior, with sharp lines carving out segments that jut outwards aggressively.

The Toyota C-HR reminds me a little of Jaguar Land Rover’s ready-to-pounce aesthetic, with a sweeping roofline that slopes backwards and down sharply – there’s definitely an air of Range Rover Evoque, here. This powerful stance means that the Toyota C-HR looks a lot more imposing than its compact crossover design would normally appear.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

The wheelbase, for instance, measures just 2,640mm, which is only about 10cm longer than the Nissan Juke – one of the smallest sub-compact SUVs on the road. It’s just 1,795mm wide too, which undercuts even the entry-level Range Rove Evoque (1,900mm). Regardless, the Toyota C-HR looks big and powerful on the road – all thanks to the muscular haunches, a high bonnet, and the generally squat stature.

Peek inside the five-door SUV and you’ll find a comfortable and spacious interior too. You get about as much legroom overall as you’d find from a Nissan Qashqai, which is the car many hail as kickstarting the SUV sales surge.

There’s a great selection of instrument panels and infotainment systems that I’ll detail later, but needless to say there’s no shortage of buttons to prod. This is a little overwhelming at first, but most of the apparatus benefits from adequate and clear labelling.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

Most of the interior surfaces are smooth and sloped – which is a sharp contrast to the car’s exterior – but the dashboard is interrupted by a ridged, blue framing that brings the carries the futuristic vibe into the inside of the car.

All in all, it’s a seriously slick design, inside and out.

2. It’s crammed with cool car tech

It would be remiss of Toyota to release such a future-fondling vehicle without loading it with similarly space-age technology. Fortunately, one of the big perks about the Toyota C-HR is that it’s stuffed with an impressive amount of tech for its on-the-road price.

The central element to Toyota’s C-HR Hybrid is the Toyota Touch 2 with Go infotainment system. Drivers and passengers interact with the system through an 8-inch touchscreen that’s built into the centre of the dashboard.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

This system does all the usual bits you’d expect, including satellite navigation and Bluetooth-powered music playback. It also features built-in online connectivity, and boasts aux-in and USB ports.

Probably the most useful feature, however, is the parking assist. The back of the Toyota C-HR Hybrid is fitted with a rear-view camera that helps you navigate into tricky spots. An grid system that’s virtually bundled onto the back of your car – and displayed on the Toyota Touch 2 screen – shows how best to aim your car into the space, and warns you if you’re at risk of backing into a wall.

The car is also fitted with a dual 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display for general driving metrics, which sits behind the steering wheel.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

Toyota has loaded the C-HR Hybrid with a smart entry system and push-button start, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to in-car tech. You’ll also benefit from automatic high-beam lighting, an electric parking brake, and rain-sensing front wipers that clear your screen automatically.

You’ll also get some driving help too, courtesy of several smart features. For instance, Lane Departure Alert will track road lanes, and alert you with noise if you start to drift – very helpful during a late-night journey. The wing mirrors are also fitted with lights that glow if it’s unsafe to change lanes; the car will measure the speed of vehicles in the next lanes to work out if you can safely move over.

A pre-collision system – which supports pedestrian detection – will warn you if you’re about to crash, and adaptive cruise control takes all of the pain out of motorway driving, slowing and stopping in kind with the traffic ahead.

3. It’s a hybrid, and seriously economical

The UK has already committed to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040, and automakers are setting much earlier deadlines themselves. With the clock now ticking, it’s probably time you considered picking up a hybrid of your own.

The main reason many people will be buying a hybrid engine is for fuel economy. Unlike a standard petrol or diesel engine, a hybrid powertrain will utilise electric power generated while driving to reduce the dependence on fuels that generate bad emissions. This means you can expect a fuel economy of up to 74.3mpg with the Toyota C-HR Hybrid (great for an SUV), and 86g/km of combined CO2 emissions.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

But the Toyota C-HR Hybrid goes one step further; it’s actually a “full” hybrid, rather than a “mild” hybrid. The difference is that unlike some hybrid cars, the Toyota C-HR is capable of running on electric power alone.

In fact, Toyota has engineered it to “run as often as possible” on electric power, in order to save fuel and reduce exhaust emission levels. You can see when your car’s running on electricity, because a green EV icon will light up in the instrument panel.

Toyota has also helpfully fitted the car with a dedicated EV mode button, allowing the driver to switch the car entirely onto electric power. This means you’ll be able to drive the car at low speeds over short distances with zero emissions and fuel consumption – perfect for protecting your wallet (and the environment) when driving in slow-moving traffic.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

The caveat is that you can only do this when there’s sufficient charge in the hybrid battery for the EV mode to be engaged. It also depends on your smooth and gentle use of throttle, and ensuring you’re not using features that excessively draw on power, like air-con or the heated rear-screen.

To maximise your potential EV performance, the best tip is to brake gently when you’re coming to stop at traffic lights. This increases the amount of electric power gained from the car’s regenerative braking system. Smooth acceleration will also help efficiency, so it’s important to try to keep out of the “power” band on the eco-monitor in the instrument panel (which sits where the rev counter would usually live).

4. It’s actually not that expensive to buy

The good news is that although it’s a seriously slick car that’s cheap to run, it doesn’t cost the earth. For a brand new model straight from Toyota, you’ll pay a starting price of just £21,065.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

Even with all the bells and whistles, the cost doesn’t rise significantly. Trusted Reviews had the chance to try out a high-spec model with the 1.8L Hybrid CVT power train and a Metal Stream Bi-Tone paintjob, and it came to an on-the-road price of £28,085.

We also had some additional extras, with a pearl white pearlescent paint (£545), and a premium option pack (£1,595) that gets you full black leather seat upholstery and a JBL premium audio system. This brought the entire cost of the car up to £30,225 – still below the £30,545 starting price of a Range Rover Evoque.

If you’d rather buy used, consider the following:

How To Use Cruise Control Toyota Chr

Conscientious drivers should spend some time looking into the general safety of a car they’re interested in buying. What driver assistance features are included as standard in the Toyota C-HR in 2021? Does this SUV include lane keeping assist as standard equipment? Read on to discover more about the Toyota C-standard HR’s and optional safety features for 2021.

In This Article...

How does cruise control work?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

  • Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is great. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Here is a video explaining adaptive cruise control, which is a precursor to autonomous vehicles and is becoming more and more common in new cars every year:

Has the 2018 Toyota CHR had cruise control?

Dynamic Full-Speed Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) This component of the TSS-P package can automatically brake and accelerate for you dependent on the speed of the car in front of you and is functional at both city and motorway speeds. Your cruise control setting is automatically maintained if there are no obstacles up ahead.

What does C-HR in the Toyota C-HR stand for?

the enigmatic “The name C-HR is an abbreviation. The Toyota press release states that the C-name HR’s is “derived from Cross Hatch Run-about and Compact High Rider. “Compact high rider” makes sense as a concept. Compact goes without saying; the C-HR is a compact crossover SUV in terms of proportions. The “high rider component of the name” refers to the C-taller HR’s stance than that of a typical sedan because it is also an SUV. Due to its resemblance to the dual design philosophy of hatchbacks and crossover SUVs, the cross hatch is also quite intuitive.

The C-HR is a crossover SUV that prioritizes performance and utility. When the back seats are folded down, it offers a 19.1 cu ft of cargo space, which is standard for hatchbacks. The volume increases to 37 cu-ft when the back seats are folded down, which is comparable to the typical capacity of a two-row SUV. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood of the C-HR cranks out 144 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The only available drivetrain is FWD, similar to a standard hatchback or sedan.

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

When is cruise control inappropriate to use?

Even though modern vehicles have numerous safety measures, it’s still crucial to understand when to avoid using the cruise control. This is due to the fact that cruise controlyes, even ACCis solely intended for long-distance travel on an interstate or other major roadway.

Avoid using cruise control when:

  • when you are sleepy The distinction between cruise control and autopilot is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind. In most cars, cruise control does not operate the brakes or the steering of the vehicle. You might not be able to dodge a hazard on the road in time if you’re drowsy and your reaction times are slow.
  • when there is a lot of traffic. Like in the city, there is still a good chance of traffic if you are on the highway. You must turn off your cruise control whenever the flow of traffic slows down so that you may manually regulate your speed and use the brakes as necessary.
  • when the weather is slick or damp outside. Never use cruise control on slick surfaces, even if your car has functions like ACC or traction control. This is because utilizing cruise control while driving in slick weather may cause your wheels to spin more quickly than they should, which could lead to hydroplaning or shorter stopping distances.
  • when you come upon curvy roadways. Last but not least, if you’re on a curving road, you should never utilize cruise control. This is so you can maneuver corners and curves safely and manually, as maintaining a steady acceleration could result in a loss of control.
  • when you’re operating a vehicle in a city or town. As we’ve previously stated, cruise control is only designed for one scenario. There are many unpredictable bikers, pedestrians, and other roadblocks in the city that aren’t present on the interstate. Additionally, cruise control cannot be used below a particular speed in most cars, making it hard to utilize it at city speeds.

After talking about when to avoid using cruise control, let’s examine when it’s okay to use cruise control.

Is it acceptable to always utilize the cruise control?

Cruise control is not intended to be utilized every time you are behind the wheel, even while it offers advantages and is more common than ever in cars today. If you use it improperly, you risk endangering yourself or others on the road. To ensure that you always sail securely, we at Diamond Glass have put together the following advice.

In dangerous weather, never use the cruise control.

If you plan to drive on slick or icy roads, you should avoid using a feature that will keep your car moving at a specific pace until it is deactivated. Even if you believe the roads in the area where you are traveling are in good condition, it may be better to avoid using cruise control if bad weather is predicted.

Don’t go faster than the speed limit.

It is exceedingly risky to set your cruise control for a speed that is higher than the speed limit permitted in your region. The typical interstate speed limit is from 55 to 70 miles per hour. Simply because it is safer and there won’t be any traffic violations, this range is advised when utilizing this feature.

Learn how to use the controls and what they do.

Even though cruise control may seem like a standard function, different automobile makes and models may have distinct controls. It doesn’t follow that a function will operate the same way in every car just because you are accustomed with it in one. To prevent any serious mishaps, take the time to become familiar with the controls in a secure area before you travel on the highway.

Avoid using the feature when there is a lot of traffic.

If you’ve never used cruise control before, avoid using it during rush hour or in other situations where there is a lot of stop-and-go traffic. The function is useful for long routes with minimal stops, but it’s not a good choice if you frequently slam on the brakes at intersections.

Be focused and aware.

You still need to be aware and concentrated even if the purpose of cruise control is to let the driver unwind and let their foot off the gas pedal for a bit. When you are fatigued or have been driving for a while, you shouldn’t utilize the feature. Additionally, you might want to completely avoid utilizing the feature if you frequently experience driving tiredness.

Toyota Active Cruise Control: What is it?

Active Cruise Control maintains your car at a pre-selected speed while automatically accelerating and decelerating with the traffic in front of you using the built-in camera and radar on your Toyota’s front grille[S1][J11].

You may slow down to 0 km/h thanks to the All-Speed ACC technology found on some Toyota models. Only High-Speed ACC, which can only operate at speeds over 50 km/h, is available on a few more specific models[J11].

How fast should you set the cruise control?

Even if you elect to utilize cruise control because you believe the road conditions are adequate, you still have a duty to pay attention to the road. Some people believe that using cruise control gives them the freedom of an autopilot, allowing them to do whatever they want. This is untrue, and carelessness might result in mishaps.

Learn how your cruise control works before you start driving. Learn how to turn it off in addition to turning it on. Some cruise controls feature distinct controls, while others have a single button for both stops and starts.

Before turning on cruise control, get to a safe speed. If the speed is too low, many cars won’t even use cruise control. Only use the adjustment controls to make necessary modifications while traveling at the designated speed after building up to it. Between 55 and 70 mph is when cruise control is most useful for keeping your car fuel-efficient.

Make careful you keep an eye on the road. Even in perfect circumstances, other vehicles might drive too close to you or make errors. It’s crucial to pay attention to traffic and road conditions so that you can respond as necessary because using cruise control increases your risk of becoming drowsy.

Although using cruise control improperly can make it risky, it is not necessarily dangerous. Accidents and damage can result from using cruise control improperly or when distracted. Regardless of whether you were using cruise control at the time of the collision, speaking with a lawyer will help you better understand your legal alternatives.

Pre-collision/Adaptive cruise control stops working

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

  • Add to quote
  • I would say almost 30-35 % of the time when I am driving, I see Pre-collision getting disabled with warning "Pre-collision disabled, please clean sensors"
  • I have checked multiple times and the sensors are very clean.
  • The warning light comes up irrespective of the fact if I am using adaptive cruise control or not.
  • Most of the time when I power off the car and power it back on, it starts to work again.
  • When I am using adaptive cruise control, it stops detecting the car in front and accelerates irrespective of the distance between my car and the car in front and I have to break or else it will end up in a crash.
  • Once the car stops maintaining the distance from the Front car, the pre-collision warning light comes up in 10-20 mins. However, during those 10-20 mins, CHR does not maintain the distance with the car in front of me.

Just a thought...are you living in a cold climate? This error happened to me yesterday while driving in snow. I cleared off the Toyota badge (it had a thin coat of ice). Later in the day, I started the vehicle and the error was still there... Checked the badge and it was clear. Restarted the car 2-3 times. Error was still there but eventually just went away. I had gone thru an automated car wash the day before in freezing temps. I'm suspecting that ice had formed under the hood and in front of the radar?

I live in the Netherlands and the weather is usually moderate here. I did notice that when the car is frozen in a sheet of ice, the pre-collision stops working as the radar sensor in the Toyota badge cannot estimate the distance correctly. However, this was just a one-off occurrence, most of the time irrespective of the weather condition, the issue happens randomly. I had the same issue on the peak summer day when the temperature was around 35C/95F, I stopped the car, thoroughly cleaned the Toyota badge, all the parking sensors, and as well as the front camera. Drove for 15 mins and the issue reoccured.

In case someone is still wondering, the issue is about the front camera radar. If it suddenly works again you should be worried. That is the sign that it is about to fail. It cost 1800€ to replace and its not just me who have the issue. Its also not included inthe warranty.

Hello, I am having the same problem with my toyota CHR hybrid 2018.

Ok so just for update. I got mine fixed and I haven't had the same problem since about 1 month plus, everything seems to be working fine for now. The issue was solved by replacing the faulty front sensor and cable. This cost about 600 euros here in finland. I was told the faulty sensor was sending wrong signals to the raider.

It maybe in need of an update or as I was told "recalibration". This cost me $750 USD and should've been for free since it's a software issue nothing pertaining to maintenance schedule. If you can put an OBD reader on it and see what codes come on then try seeing if you can reset or clear the codes. Good luck

My toyota chr 2017 (second hand) cruise control has speed limiter at 115 km/h. I can accelerate but when I stop, it comes back to 115km/h. is there a way to by pass this and be able to set the speed it whatever speed i want?? other owners of the same car they don't have that issue.

I had a 2018 C-HR built in Jan 2018 and I had no problems to set that cruise control at whatever speed I want. If you're doing 130 and activate cruise control it doesn't accept 130? Just 115? The newest ones have a different type of cruise control but also there's no such random limit.

I've never tried the limiter function, I usually use the standard radar cruise control which I think can be set at any speed.

Yeah, the button is on the steering wheel but I'm not exactly sure how it functions or what it limits!

Toyota C-HR How to activate the radar

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

The C-HR radar is activated by briefly pressing the shortest lever button under the right hand steering wheel.

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

Pressing for longer activates cruise control, automatic speed control. This warning on the display indicates the activation of the radar:

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

C-HR warns that radar should only be used on highways and not in cities:

toyota chr hybrid cruise control

When the radar is activated, the C-HR automatically follows the car or motorcycle in front of it, adapting speed and braking: If the vehicle in front brakes, the C-HR also brakes. If the vehicle in front stops, the C-HR stops. When the vehicle in front restarts, the signal appears on the display, but the accelerator must be pressed. In 90° curves it is possible for the radar to disengage by emitting two beeps and a warning on the display.

TRD Off-Road Capability

A TRD-tuned suspension with enhanced rebound control and red coil springs with revised spring rates mean better ride quality, while the skid plate helps protect the underside when tackling gravel-covered roads. With 203 net combined horsepower, an 8-speed transmission, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD (TV-AWD) and Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), it’s no wonder our TRD engineers jumped at the chance to redefine what TRD Off-Road stands for.

Multi-Terrain Select

RAV4 features standard Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) on All-Wheel Drive (AWD) gas models. Choose between four modes (MUD & SAND, ROCK & DIRT, SNOW and NORMAL) for enhanced traction. When activated, the system is designed to sense slippage and regulate wheelspin by automatically adjusting the engine throttle, brakes and drive-force distribution—helping to maximize driving performance on different surfaces.

Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD With Rear Driveline Disconnect

Available Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive (TV-AWD) helps enhance responsiveness and stability by sending up to 50 percent of the power to the rear and then further distributing that power to the right or left wheel. To help boost fuel efficiency, Rear Driveline Disconnect will stop sending power to the rear when it isn’t necessary.

Drive Modes

Three distinct drive modes let you tailor RAV4’s driving dynamics to match your mood. SPORT Mode provides sharper acceleration, Eco Mode helps maximize fuel efficiency, and NORMAL Mode blends fuel economy with performance.

Multi-Link Rear Suspension

Enjoy a smooth ride that delivers driving confidence. RAV4’s multi-link rear suspension helps enhance handling and control by working with its natural body rigidity in order to keep traction steady.

Exceptional Ride, Handling and Comfort

RAV4’s Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform refines the drive wherever you take it. A long, wide stance makes the handling more responsive, while a strong core gives you a ride that is smooth and confident.

Hands-Free Power Liftgate

Powered to help you out. With the push of a button, the available power rear liftgate can open and close automatically. When your hands are full, the available hands-free power liftgate senses your Smart Key fob and opens automatically when you wave your foot under the center of the rear bumper.

Accessory Power Outlet

Power your gear wherever you go. All you have to do is access the rear cargo area and plug into RAV4’s standard 12V/120W outlet to give you the charge you need to keep going. Adventure grade, TRD Off-Road and Hybrid Woodland Edition up the power with an additional 120V/100W AC power outlet in the rear cargo area.

Roof Rail Cross Bars

The cross bars directly mounted on RAV4 Woodland Edition’s roof rails come standard and provide additional tie-down points for unwieldy outdoor gear.

Ground Clearance

Don’t sweat the small stuff. With over eight inches of ground clearance, RAV4 lets you easily handle off-road trails and pathways. The ride height also gives you a more confident view of what’s around you.

Distinct Design

Full of personality, RAV4’s sporty design continues to stand out from the crowd. Muscular fenders on all four corners accentuate its ready-for-anything attitude, while available two-tone exterior paint color schemes help you express your own unique style.

TRD Off-Road

RAV4 TRD Off-Road’s subtle styling differences include dark-gray front and rear lower valence, LED fog lights and numerous black-painted accents. Rugged overfenders also amp up its exterior look, along with matte-black 18-in. TRD alloy wheels wrapped in aggressive Falken® WILDPEAK A/T Trail tires.

Rear Design

Leave a lasting impression. Underneath the rear bumper, the dual chrome-tipped exhaust shows off a powerful look when seen from behind. A rear spoiler and modern LED taillights deliver a distinctive appearance and finish off the design.

Where function meets style. RAV4's LED projector headlights, standard across all grades, look sleek during the day, and even sharper at night.

Wheel Designs

Good-looking from the ground up. RAV4’s wheels are designed to complement every model’s personality and style. From XLE’s 17-in. 5-spoke silver-finished alloy wheels to the TRD 18-in. bronze-finished alloy wheels on Woodland Edition, you’ll look good wherever your trips take you.

Thoughtful Interior

Ready to impress, on- or off-road. Feel an elevated level of refinement every time you enter RAV4. Premium materials, like the available SofTex®-trimmed seats and the comfort of available 8-way power-adjustable driver and 4-way power-adjustable passenger seats, put you in the center of it all.

Panoramic Glass Roof

Expand everyone’s view. The available panoramic glass roof gives all passengers a front-row view of the wide-open sky.

Available Ventilated and Heated Front and Rear Seats

Make every seat more comfortable. With available ventilated and heated front seats and heated rear outboard seats, everyone can have the right amount of comfort.

Elevated Cabin Experience

LED lights highlight interior features and enhance the feel of the cabin. The door switches are also illuminated for better visibility so you can see comfortably, no matter how dark the night sky is.

Available Dual Zone Climate Control With Rear Vents

Dial in the comfort. Front-seat passengers can fine-tune the temperature to their liking. Rear vents found behind the center console get the air circulating and further help those in back get comfortable.

Intuitive Storage Tray and Passenger Shelf

Find a place for all your things. Below RAV4’s climate controls is a storage tray that can hold whatever’s in your pocket. A convenient shelf between the upper and lower passenger-side dash gives you the perfect spot to place small items. Screen depiction accurate at time of posting.

10.5-In. Multimedia Display

Connectivity and infotainment have grown. With an available larger 10.5-in. multimedia display, RAV4’s audio multimedia system is in clear view.

12.3-In. Multi-Information Display

The available 12.3-in. Multi-Information Display (MID) presents turn-by-turn directions, safety info, alerts and more, all at a glance so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Front and Rear Parking Assist With Automatic Braking

Available Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking (PA w/AB) audibly and visually warns you when it detects stationary objects or vehicles approaching from the rear. If the system determines there may be contact with a detected obstacle or vehicle, it will reduce engine power and/or apply the brakes.

Panoramic View Monitor With Camera Perimeter Scan

RAV4’s available Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) with Perimeter Scan helps you check your surroundings for hazards. It uses four cameras, one on each side of the vehicle, to display a bird’s-eye view onto the touchscreen display. When you’re parked and using the Moving View setting, RAV4 creates an animated virtual view from above to give you a bigger picture of what’s around.

USB Ports and Qi-Compatible Wireless Charging

Stay connected to fun. Plug your smartphone or mobile device into one of the available five USB ports to power up. You can also place your device on the available Qi-compatible wireless charging pad found conveniently in the tray below the climate controls.

Audio Multimedia

Toyota audio multimedia.

Designed to enhance every moment behind the wheel, RAV4’s available 10.5-in. Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen gives you access to the updated intuitive user interface, which heightens your interactions through sight, touch and voice recognition by letting you activate the system with a phrase like “Hey, Toyota.” From listening to music to finding your destinations, and more—stay connected to every adventure.

Wireless Apple CarPlay®

Bring along a familiar interface. With RAV4’s wireless Apple CarPlay® compatibility, you can use your compatible iPhone® with RAV4's audio multimedia system to get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music, all while staying focused on your commute.

Wireless Android Auto™

Stay connected on the road. By pairing your compatible Android™ phone with Bluetooth ® to the audio multimedia system wireless Android Auto™ compatibility lets you get real-time traffic alerts, make and receive phone calls, listen to your favorite soundtrack and more.

JBL® Premium Audio System

Enhance the soundtrack to every adventure with RAV4’s available JBL® Premium Audio system. The next-gen system uses 800 watts of total power to drive 11 speakers in nine locations, including front horn tweeters and a subwoofer.
