International Tourists Unlocking Economic Recovery Across the UAE Says the World Travel & Tourism Council

Travel & Tourism jobs surpassing 2019 levels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Overseas visitors spending more in Dubai than in 2019

London, UK: The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) has today revealed positive signs of recovery for the Travel & Tourism sector in Dubai and Abu Dhabi as overseas travellers head back, providing a much-needed boost to economies across the country.

The report, researched in partnership with Oxford Economics, analysed key indicators such as Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP, employment and traveller spend.

The analysis of the impact of the Travel & Tourism sector in both cities shows that, the di-rect GDP contribution, jobs, and visitor spending are all bouncing back.

The WTTC Cities Economic Impact Report shows that in 2019, the Travel & Tourism sector contributed almost AED 51BN to Dubai’s and AED 12.5BN to Abu Dhabi’s economy.

But although the pandemic had a damaging effect for many countries around the world, the UAE demonstrated remarkable resilience.

In 2020, Travel & Tourism’s GDP contribution in both cities dropped by more than half. In Dubai it fell to AED 19.5BN and in Abu Dhabi it fell to just AED 6BN.

But the global tourism body’s research shows a strong recovery for both cities.

Dubai’s Travel & Tourism sector is forecast to have reached AED 46BN, only 10% below 2019 levels and Abu Dhabi’s Travel & Tourism sector is expected to have grown to AED 11BN last year, just 12% below 2019 levels.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “City destinations in the UAE continue to grow in popularity for travellers from around the world.  “Although these key cities were heavily affected by the pandemic, they have shown incredi-ble resilience and signs of growth. The UAE’s Travel & Tourism sector is on the road to re-covery, demonstrative of the wide appeal tourist destinations across the region continue to hold for international travellers.

“But it’s crucial that the national and local governments continue to recognise the economic importance of Travel & Tourism for the local and national economies, jobs and businesses.”

Jobs on the rise

The report also shows that across key cities analysed, employment within the Travel & Tour-ism sector is set to overtake pre-pandemic levels.

The report also shows that in 2019 there were just under 262,000 in Dubai and almost 43,000 Travel & Tourism jobs in Abu Dhabi.

The following year, job numbers dropped to just under 211,000 in Dubai (-19%) but in-creased slightly to just under 44,000 (+2%) in Abu Dhabi.

In 2021, employment rose by 10% in Dubai to reach more than 231,000 but fell by 4% to slightly fewer than 42,000 jobs in Abu Dhabi.

WTTC is forecasting job numbers to have grown in both cities.

In Dubai employment numbers are forecast to rise by 13% to reach almost 262,000 jobs and Abu Dhabi employment numbers are set to reach just over 43,000 in 2022, showing a mod-est 0.4% increase in job numbers since before the pandemic.

In Dubai, WTTC forecasts an AED 1.5BN increase in international visitor spend in 2022, compared to 2019, to AED 108BN (+1.4%).

Travel and tourism sector to contribute $49bn to UAE’s economy this year, WTTC says

The industry is expected to create 7,000 new jobs in emirates.

The travel and tourism sector is projected to contribute Dh180.6 billion ($49.18 billion) to the UAE’s economy this year, representing nearly 10 per cent of the total, says the World Travel and Tourism Council.

The estimate for 2023 is only 1.6 per cent lower than the 2019 high of Dh183.4 billion, the global tourism body said in itslatest Economic Impact report on Wednesday.

WTTC expects the sector to cross the pre-pandemic employment levels , reaching more than 758,000 jobs, including nearly 7,000 new positions, this year.

“The sector is recovering at a rapid pace, proving the UAE continues to grow in popularity amongst international travellers,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC president and chief executive.

“The UAE is home to one of the world’s busiest and most successful airports, Dubai International , which acts as a gateway to the Middle East.”

Last year, the travel and tourism sector ’s contribution to the UAE’s gross domestic product grew by more than 60 per cent to reach nearly Dh167 billion, representing 9 per cent of the country’s economy, WTTC said.

The sector created more than 89,000 jobs last year, bringing the total to about 751,000 on a countrywide level.

“2022 saw the return of international travellers to the UAE, with India, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UK leading as source markets for international arrivals,” the report said.

Last year, international visitors contributed Dh117.6 billion to the Emirates' economy, marking a 65.3 per cent year-on-year growth, but still down 19 per cent from 2019 levels.

Meanwhile, domestic spend surged by nearly 36 per cent to reach Dh46.9 billion, up 10.6 per cent from pre-pandemic levels.

“The future for the sector looks positive. By the end of this year, the sector’s contribution will level that of 2019, and over the next decade, growth will outstrip the national GDP and create more than 114,000 new jobs, representing one in nine jobs,” said Ms Simpson.

Dubai International Airport remained the world's busiest international hub for passengers last year for the ninth year in a row, as long-haul travel demand surged, rankings by the Airports Council International showed in April.

The tourism sector, an important pillar of Dubai’s economy, has strongly rebounded from the coronavirus-induced slowdown.

The emirate recorded 14.36 million international visitors in 2022, inching closer to the 16.73 million tourists welcomed in 2019, according to data from the Department of Economy and Tourism.

It aims to exceed the pre-pandemic annual number of international visitors this year, after the emirate recorded a 17 per cent increase in the tourist numbers in the first quarter of 2023, Issam Kazim, chief executive of the Dubai Department for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, told The National earlier this month.

“Our report highlighted the appeal tourist destinations across the country, such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, continue to hold for international travellers. These cities have shown an incredible resilience and strong leadership,” said Ms Simpson.

The WTTC expects the sector to grow its GDP contribution to Dh235.5 billion by 2033, representing 10.2 per cent of the country’s economy.

Over the next decade, the travel and tourism industry is projected to give employment to more than 872,000 people in the UAE, accounting for about 12 per cent of the total workforce, the WTTC said.

The UAE, the Arab world’s second-largest economy, is estimated to have grown by 7.6 per cent last year , marking its highest expansion in 11 years, after GDP rose by 3.9 per cent in 2021, according to the UAE Central Bank.

It is expected to grow by 3.9 per cent this year and accelerate further to 4.3 per cent in 2024.

Meanwhile in the Middle East, the WTTC expects travel and tourism sector's GDP contribution to exceed Dh1.5 trillion, nearing the 2019 high.

The sector will recover almost all of the jobs lost during the pandemic by the end of 2023, the report said.

In the Mena region, real GDP grew by 5.3 per cent in 2022, reflecting strong domestic demand and a rebound in oil production, according to the International Monetary Fund. However, growth is expected to decelerate this year to 3.1 per cent before picking up slightly to 3.4 per cent next year.

Travel and Tourism in UAE: The Evolution and Impact '> Travel and Tourism in UAE: The Evolution and Impact

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has steadily emerged as a global powerhouse in the realm of travel and tourism. Its strategic geographical location coupled with a rich historical heritage and modern amenities make it an irresistible destination for tourists worldwide.

The Genesis of Emirates Tourism Council

In January 2021, the UAE Government sanctioned the establishment of the Emirates Tourism Council. The council’s mandate includes formulating a comprehensive tourism strategy that aligns with UAE’s broader national objectives and the ambitious UAE Centennial 2071 vision .

The council shoulders the responsibility of revamping tourism-related policies and legislation, fostering the growth of the tourism sector, and encouraging investments in the industry. It also aims to boost the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) functioning in the tourism sector.

The Council’s Composition

The council comprises key local authorities and departments, including but not limited to:

  • Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi
  • Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing – Dubai
  • Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority
  • Ajman Tourism Development Department
  • Department of Tourism and Archaeology Umm Al Quwain
  • Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority
  • Fujairah Tourism and Antiquities Authority

These members collectively strive to bolster the UAE’s tourism sector.

The Economic Impact of Tourism

The travel and tourism sector has significantly contributed to the UAE’s economy. In 2016, the sector directly accounted for 5.2% of the UAE’s GDP, amounting to AED 68.5 billion. The World Travel and Tourism Council predicts that this contribution will increase to 5.4% by 2027.

Moreover, the tourism sector supported 317,500 jobs in 2016, accounting for 5.4% of total employment. This figure is expected to rise to 5.9% by 2027, creating 410,000 jobs.

In terms of investment , the travel and tourism sector attracted AED 26.2 billion in 2016. This figure is projected to rise by 11% per annum over the next ten years, reaching AED 74.5 billion in 2027.

An Overview of Tourism Statistics

In 2016, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi alone hosted 4,440,314 guests in its hotels, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. Dubai, on the other hand, welcomed 14.9 million overnight visitors, a 5% rise from the prior year.

These figures highlight the increasing popularity of the UAE as a tourist destination, with each Emirate contributing significantly to the overall tourism landscape.

Tourism Initiatives

The UAE Government has launched several initiatives to stimulate the travel and tourism sector. These include the Dubai Tourism Strategy 2020, Sustainable Tourism Development in Abu Dhabi, and the Ajman Strategic Plan for Tourism 2015-2021.

These initiatives aim to enhance the customer experience, promote sustainability, and improve operational effectiveness, thereby making the UAE an attractive tourism destination.

How a Travel Agency Can Help You Save Money on Your Next Trip/Vacation

Planning a vacation can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming and costly. That’s where a travel agency comes to the rescue! Many people assume that using a travel agency will only add to the expenses, but in reality, it can be a smart move that helps you save money in more ways than one.

  • Provide access to exclusive deals and discounts that are not always available to the general public. Travel agencies have established relationships with airlines, hotels, and tour operators, which allows them to negotiate better rates and offers. By tapping into their network, you can get the best value for your money, including discounted airfares, hotel stays, and tour packages.
  • Helps you in creating customized travel itineraries that fit your budget and preferences. They know the best ways to maximize your travel budget without compromising on the quality of your trip. Travel agents can suggest affordable accommodation options, recommend budget-friendly activities and attractions, and even find cost-effective transportation solutions. With their knowledge and experience, they can help you plan a memorable vacation that won’t break the bank.
  • Planning a vacation can be time-consuming, especially if you’re not familiar with the destination. Travel agencies take care of all the research, bookings, and logistics for you. They know the most efficient routes, best times to travel, and insider tips to save time and money. By leaving the planning to the professionals, you can focus on enjoying your trip without the stress of coordinating every detail.
  • Hidden costs can quickly add up and turn a budget-friendly vacation into a financial burden. Travel agencies have the expertise to spot potential pitfalls and hidden fees that might not be obvious to the average traveler. They can help you navigate through complex airline fare rules, cancellation policies, and other fine print that could impact your overall expenses. By avoiding these traps, you can stay on track with your budget and avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Offer you various travel insurance options tailored to your specific needs. While some travelers might be tempted to skip insurance to save money, it’s essential to have adequate coverage in case of unexpected emergencies, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost baggage. Travel agencies can help you find cost-effective insurance plans that provide the necessary coverage without breaking the bank.

Now that you know the advantages, let’s explore the top travel agencies in Dubai that stand out for their exceptional services:

7 travel essentials that are game-changers in UAE, for 2024

Best buys lifestyle.

From portable Wi-Fi to Birkenstocks, we feature trip necessities that are often overlooked

travel stock

Redeeming your airline miles this summer? Consider all the items you'll need once you land. Holidayers usually get so caught up in the logistics - booking the most economical flights and researching the perfect hotel location - that packing for a smooth trip becomes an afterthought. This is understandably so, because a traveller's homework never ends.

The essentials that complete your holiday is knowledge gained over years of flight experience. We're talking about game-changing necessities to keep you from heaving a frustrated sigh on your first morning, in a foreign country. Expert travel tips are hard to come by, which is why we reached out to a seasoned globetrotter who's touched down in over 100 countries so far.

Parikshit Balochi, a Dubai-based travel blogger and radio jockey, has been following his wanderlust since 2011, and hopes to mark his hundred-and-second destination soon. "If I'm travelling in the summer, I'll be carrying as few clothes as possible. You just need a good pair of bottoms that you can wear again under different shirts. Always travel light," he told Gulf News.

If you've shopped for the summer holidays, don't forget to check out packing tricks and tips from a pro organiser . Balochi likes to roll his articles of clothing in the backpack, instead of folding them, to make use of every crevice. A good rule of thumb is to pack with the destination in mind. Still, regardless of where you're headed, there are things you'll always want on your checklist.

Let's take a look at what our travel expert deems essential for a comfortable trip, whether you're going solo or with family, from comfortable shoes to a universal travel adapter. We've also featured recommendations from travel influencers online, to keep you abreast of what's trending.

Shop with Amazon Prime  to get free, fast delivery.

1. Best Travel Pillow: Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow

Balochi recommends the Cabeau neck pillow with so much fervour that it's won the first spot on our list. "I find a travel pillow to be one of the most underrated items. If you're a sleeper on the plane or are on a long flight, the pillow will stop your head from lolling against the window, and it even packs light," he said. Cabeau's memory foam pillow can be used anywhere in transit, since the straps attach to any chair, from an inter-city bus seat to an airplane seat. Its raised support and flat back ensure the perfect spine alignment to prevent slouching and the resulting neck pain. You'll get a carry bag that compresses the pillow down to half its size. Or, you could let the pillow hang from your main carry-on during layovers.

2. Best Travel Shoe: Birkenstock Arizona Sandals

  • EVA outsole to cushion your step
  • Hardy and resistant to years of wear
  • Contoured cork footbed
  • Takes time to break into

Over at TikTok, Birkenstocks enjoy popularity among travel influencers for supporting long walks and pairing perfectly well with most casual outfits. Proclaimed as the summer shoes, any pair of Birkenstocks will last you years of wear and tear, through cobbled streets and hours spent exploring the city on foot. "Always pack shoes according to the destination and the terrain. Say you're hitting Portugal in summer; carry any light walking shoes you'll be comfortable in," advised Balochi, who prefers comfortable sneakers for exploring. These unisex Arizona sandals have a two-strap design with a skin-friendly synthetic leather upper and the classic cork footbed. The EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) outsole absorbs shock from rough terrain. Reviewers mention wearing these daily on travels through Europe and Asia. The only qualm with Birkenstocks is that they need some time to break in before you jet off.

3. Best Travel Adapter: Ownit 35.5W PD Travel Adapter

  • Compatible with over 150 countries
  • Supports UK, EU, AU and US plugs
  • Three USB-A and two USB-C ports with fast charge
  • Travel pouch
  • Makes a static noise when charging, per reviews

A travel adapter is one item that lingers at the back of our minds but never makes it to the bag. Balochi has been using his universal travel adapter ever since he bought it in 2015. Much like his gadget, the Ownit adapter comes with device charging capabilities, great for when you want to save juice on your power bank . It covers power outlets from more than 150 countries, with plugs used in the US, EU, Australia and the UK. Charge up to six devices at the same time, including cameras, smartphones, power bricks, e-readers and even laptops. The adapter has three USB-A ports with 20-watt fast charging and two USB-C ports, one of which supports PD (Power Delivery). Reviewers love that it comes in a nylon travel pouch. Check out other tech essentials to pack here .

4. Best Travel Backpack: Oakley Men's Kitchen Sink Backpack

Solo travellers will be better off with a rugged backpack, rather than a carry-on suitcase, says Balochi. A good backpack also comes in handy on family trips, especially if you're the planner who is in charge of everyone's passports and tickets. "I still use my Oakley backpack that I bought nearly ten years ago. It lasts forever and is great for people with kids or who have a lot of miscellaneous items to carry. The maximum allowance is about 45 litres, so do buy accordingly," he said. This Kitchen Sink Backpack is a premium water-repellent bag suitable for a weekend trip or an extended holiday. It has a 34-litre capacity, distributed among specialised pockets for a 17-inch laptop and shoes. You can store your summer shades in the hard media-player compartment at the top. Toss the bag into the washer after each trip, worry-free.

5. Best for Laundry: Scrubba Portable Wash Bag

Speaking of washing, a lesser-known travel hack is this portable wash bag. With the Scrubba hand washing machine, you don't have to spend time scouting the nearest laundromat. Most hostels and hotels ask for a premium for each article of clothing, so this on-the-go washer comes to the rescue during emergencies. Scrubba has a washboard-in-a-bag design, where the inner surface is lined with ridges. Throw in t-shirts, socks and delicates, add water and soap, secure the top and give the bag a good rub for a minute or two. Reviews say it's a money-saving essential, and those with eczema leave five stars for the hand-washing alternative it offers. Some advise that you have to plan ahead for drying the clothes.

Warranty: The manufacturer offers a one-year warranty.

6. Best Travel Mobile Wi-Fi: TP-Link M7350 4G LTE MiFi

  • Streams Wi-Fi to up to 10 devices
  • Intuitive display shows connected devices, battery, data used and more
  • Small enough to fit in a pocket
  • Eight hours of battery
  • MicroSD card slot to share library across the network
  • Needs a data plan on a SIM card

Travelling in a group? Share your mobile data with up to 10 friends via a portable Wi-Fi box. All you have to do is insert a 4G SIM card to turn the device into a secure Wi-Fi hotspot. The M7350 by TP-Link can reach up to 150Mpbs download speeds - to give you an idea, reviewers have attended webinars on multiple laptops using the bars from the Mi-Fi unit. To share your vacation library seamlessly, slip your camera's microSD card into the dedicated slot on the unit to give your network full access. On a full battery, the Wi-Fi box can run for eight hours straight. Users confirm the strong signal strength and often put it to use when the hotel's internet is slow. This is going to be an irreplaceable kit for holidayers taking their work laptop with them.

Warranty: Amazon offers a one-year extended warranty for Dh18 and two years for Dh29.

7. Best Travel Torch: Wuben C3 Flashlight

  • Incredible 180-metre throw for a small flashlight
  • USB-C charging (cable included)
  • Six modes of lighting
  • Charge can last for up to 143 hours
  • Heats up on the brightest setting, say reviews

Consider adding a mini torch to your tech travel kit. Balochi always has one on him on every trip, noting how "uncertainty is part of travel", and it's better to be prepared when unforeseen circumstances arise, like a power outage. The Wuben C3 flashlight illuminates up to 180 metres ahead, using powerful P9 lamp beads that emit 1,200 lumens of bright light. In Eco mode, the battery lasts for up to 143 hours and fully charges in three hours with the included type-C cable. It withstands harsh weather conditions, as the body is made of durable aircraft-grade aluminium. Measuring only 4.78 inches in length, you can easily pocket it or let it hang from a belt loop. Those who inspect cars, go on camping trips, and mountain bike attest to the quality, adding that it works in rain or snow.

Travel and tourism license cost in dubai: mainland vs free zone.

Travel and Tourism License Cost in Dubai: Mainland vs Free Zone

Dubai is a popular destination for both business and leisure travel; as such, the tourism industry plays a vital role in the city’s economy. Dubai experienced a significant increase in tourism in 2022, with nearly 23.7 million travellers visiting the city, an 89% increase from the previous year. This growth can be attributed to the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions, which has led to a surge in pent-up travel demand.

On New Year’s Eve alone, the city, known for its luxurious hotels and dining options, welcomed over 107,082 visitors , including 95,445 via its airports, 6,527 via the Hatta Border Crossing, and 5,010 by ship. To establish a business in Dubai’s travel and tourism industry, it is necessary to know the travel and tourism license cost in Dubai and to register with the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

Travel and Tourism License Cost in Dubai

Benefits of getting a travel and tourism license in dubai.

november promo 2023-min

When considering starting a business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the first decision is to establish a mainland or free zone company. Both options have unique advantages and disadvantages.

Travel and Tourism License in Dubai Mainland

A Travel and Tourism License in Dubai Mainland allows you to trade with the UAE market and participate in government contracts. In the Mainland , investors are allowed full ownership of hotels and guest houses without requiring a local partner. This means that an individual or company from outside of the UAE can establish and operate a hotel or guest house without the need to share ownership with a local partner. However, mainland companies are subject to the country’s corporate tax laws, which can be relatively high.

Travel and Tourism License in Dubai Free Zone

A free zone company offers several benefits, including a 0% tax rate, no currency restrictions, full customs tax exemption, and the ability to repatriate 100% of profits. These benefits make free zone companies a popular choice for businesses looking to reduce their tax burden and operate more flexibly. However, free zone companies are not allowed to trade directly with the UAE market, which can be a drawback for some businesses.

It is advisable to seek guidance from a company set-up specialist like Choose UAE when making this significant decision. Choose UAE is a company formation expert who can assist with mainland and free zone travel and tourism licensing. Whether you’re looking to set up a travel agency, tour operator, or any other tourism-related business, Choose UAE can help you navigate the complex process of obtaining the travel and tourism license in Dubai. With the help of Choose UAE, you can be confident that your travel and tourism business will fully comply with all relevant regulations and be ready to start operations as soon as possible.

  • A single license allows for both inbound and outbound tour operations and a travel agency without additional bank guarantees or fees.
  • One can plan, arrange and host shows, exhibitions, and international conferences under this license.
  • The new regulations have resulted in a reduction in the initial investment required for your company.
  • Having a travel agency enables you to provide visitor visas (pending immigration approval) and sell airline tickets within the UAE.

The cost of obtaining a travel and tourism license in Dubai can vary depending on whether the business is located on the mainland or in a free zone. Generally, businesses on the mainland may face higher costs due to additional government fees. In comparison, those in free zones may have lower costs and more flexibility regarding company structure and ownership. Ultimately, the decision of where to set up a travel and tourism business in Dubai will depend on the specific needs and goals of the company.

Tourism projected to account for 12% of UAE GDP this year, as GCC policymakers gather to discuss future of regional travel at ATM 2024

ATM2024

Tourism accounted for 809,000 jobs in the UAE last year, equivalent to 12.3% of national employment, and this figure is on course to rise to 833,000 in 2024.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Gulf-wide collaboration, ease of inter-regional travel and infrastructure development were placed under the microscope at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024, which saw a selection of policymakers discuss thestreaml ining of the GCC’s thriving tourism industry. The 31st edition of ATM is being hosted at Dubai World Travel Centre (DWTC) until Thursday 9 May.

H.E. Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri , UAE Minister of Economy, noted the tourism sector’s growing contribution to the Emirates’ economy in his opening comments on ATM 2024’s Global Stage. “According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), our tourism sector has been a dynamic force within our economy, contributing an impressive 11.7% to GDP [in 2023], amounting to AED 220 billion,” H.E. Al Marri told attendees. “For 2024, the forecast is set even higher, with an anticipated contribution of 12% to the [UAE’s] GDP, equating to AED 236 billion.”

H.E. Al Marri’s speech was followed by a panel discussion between H.E. Khalid Jasim Al Midfa , Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority ; H.E. Fahd Hamidaddin , CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority ; H.E. Azzan Al Busaidi , Undersecretary of Tourism at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in Oman; and H.E. Sarah Buhijji , CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority . The session was moderated by Dubai Eye presenter, Richard Dean .

ATM2024

During the in-depth discussion, the ministerial panellists explored the importance of inter-regional initiatives in elevating the GCC tourism industry to the next level, while striking the right balance between collaboration and competition between destinations and nations. The planned GCC Unified Tourist Visa was cited as a key facilitator for the region, alongside factors such as sustainability, infrastructure and culture.

Panellists said that the planned unified visa would allow member nations to present the GCC as a connected destination, boosting accessibility and driving KPIs such as length of stay, average spend and employment. Speakers noted they would continue to ensure that the travel industry positively impacts local businesses, communities and ecosystems, contributing to the long-term sustainability of tourism across the region.

Participants also explained that current and future infrastructure will complement the GCC Unified Tourist Visa by enhancing accessibility within and between Gulf nations. In addition to ongoing investment in new and existing airports and cruise terminals, the ministerial speakers highlighted the central role of the upcoming GCC Railway in facilitating and optimising region-wide access for both domestic and international visitors.

Danielle Curtis , Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, said: “While it’s clear that healthy competition will continue to play an important role in strengthening the GCC’s world-class tourism offering, it was also encouraging to hear how collaboration is enabling the region to become more than the sum of its parts in terms of attracting global travellers. We are immensely grateful to this year’s ministerial participants, who provided a diverse range of valuable insights into the region’s unified tourism future.”

The opening day of ATM 2024 featured 12 sessions across the Global and Future Stages. Welcoming attendees to the Global Stage today, H.E. Issam Abdulrahim Kazim , Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing , hosted the fascinating Global Stage Welcome: The Gateway to Global Insights session, outlining the key tourism objectives for Dubai for the coming years.

Meanwhile, the all-new Future Stage kicked off a week of innovation-focused sessions, including Branding in the AI Era: How Travel Brands Can Capture Wanderlust  and The New Age of Island Tourism .

SL targets UAE as key tourism market at Arabian Travel Market

Sri Lanka made a significant presence at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2024 in Dubai highlighting the country’s attractions and offerings. The Sri Lanka pavilion at ATM 2024 was organised by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB).

Arabian Travel Market was one of the leading global events for the travel and tourism sector, held last week. Over 41,000 attendees visited the annual trade show, which featured 2,300 exhibitors from 165 countries. This year, ATM was centred on the theme ‘Empowering Innovation – Transforming Travel through Entrepreneurship’.

The Sri Lanka pavilion was inaugurated by dignitaries including the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the UAE Udaya Indrarathna, Consul General of Sri Lanka to Dubai and Northern Emirates Alexi Gunasekera, Chairman of SLTPB Chalaka Gajabahu alongside other key officials. With over 60 travel agents, Destination Management Companies (DMCs) and leading hotels and resorts from Sri Lanka participating, the country aimed to showcase its unique tourism potential to the diverse and cosmopolitan market of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as to the international audience.

With a view to enhancing air connectivity and facilitating seamless travel experiences between the two countries a MoU was signed with the Emirates Airlines at the Arabian Travel Market 2024 on May 7. The MoU was signed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman and Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West Asia and Indian Ocean, in the presence of Tourism, Lands, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Harin Fernando, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in the UAE and the Consul General of Sri Lanka to Dubai and Northern Emirates.

A press briefing by Minister Fernando was held to highlight Sri Lanka tourism potential and the collaborative efforts with the UAE stakeholders to boost tourist arrivals.

The SLTPB Chairman emphasized Sri Lanka’s new destination branding ‘You will come back for more’, inviting everyone to experience the country first-hand.

The Tourism Minister announced that Sri Lanka has made significant progress in re-establishing its tourism industry after Covid-19, with the support of airlines. He also highlighted the recent opening of the luxurious ITC Rathnadipa hotel in Colombo, as well as the availability of several other high-class hotels and 700 villas around the country that offer personalised experiences and diversified adventures for tourists.

Ambassador Udaya Indrarathna said that coordinated efforts are being made to enhance Sri Lanka’s tourism industry in a sustainable way.

Consul General Alexi Gunasekera emphasised the UAE’s significance as a hub for luxury tourism, independence and leisure tourism, as well as MICE tourism. He underscored the importance of events like ATM as platforms for networking and sharing best practices within the tourism industry.

Oman – Abu Dhabi railway: Hafeet rail to boost tourism in the area

 alt=

Abu Dhabi: Hafeet Rail, the joint rail venture that connects Sohar in Oman to Abu Dhabi in the UAE has entered the implementation phase. Etihad Rail, Oman Rail and Mubadala Investment Company signed a shareholders’ agreement, marking the commencement of the railway project. A game-changer initiative, it will boost tourism between the UAE and Oman, also increasing the scope to connect other major cities in the area. While the current travel time between the regions is 3 hours 25 minutes, the project will reduce it by 1 hour 40 minutes, as per reports. The passenger train can speed up to 200 kilometres per hour, covering the distance between Sohar and Abu Dhabi in 1 hour 40 minutes, and 1 hour 47 minutes between Sohar and Al Ain. Meanwhile, the train has a capacity to accommodate up to 400 passengers.

15,000 tonnes capacity in freight trains A freight train can transport more than 15,000 tonnes of goods (around 270 standard containers). Hafeet Rail aims to make significant contributions in various sectors in both countries such as mining, iron and steel, agriculture and food, retail, e-commerce and petrochemicals. The railway project which requires a total investment of $ 3 billion is envisaged as a gateway to the regional markets of Oman and UAE. Moreover, the project will create hundreds of employment opportunities in both countries. The project that was formerly known as Oman and Etihad Rail Company has recently been named Hafeet Rail. The Jebel Hafeet Mountain ranges that stretch between the two countries are known for their difficult terrain including mountains, deserts and limestones. The project that connects the commercial ports to the rail network of both countries would make cross–border trade easy and efficient.
