We have the world map and it’s great but I’d love to see one of just the Caribbean! We like to travel to different islands down there but these maps obviously have a difficult time capturing such small areas.

I have been using this app to motivate myself to branch out and see more cities etc when I have the chance. Being able to mark specific regions and cities is very useful, and when a city isn’t on the map the developers are quick to add it once it’s been requested. I have occasionally had an issue where the app will glitch and mark me as currently being in a country that I’m not in. Unsure if that’s an issue with the app or my phone’s GPS etc though. Also, there’s a bit of a visual issue on the “share” maps with places marked as disputed territories— they don’t show up and it makes it seem like you haven’t been there. It’s really noticeable when you’ve been to all the surrounding areas. I understand there might be some sensitive political issues, but perhaps a toggle for “show disputed territories” would be good?

Best travel tracking app

I’m obsessed with Skratch. I specifically downloaded it because not only you can mark the countries you’ve been to (which is typically what these apps do), but you can check states, regions, and cities! All the specifics you could imagine. And as a frequent traveler and lover, this is something one appreciates because having visited France (when you only went to Paris) is not the same thing, hahaha :) PLUS, I couldn’t find two cities that I’ve been on the map, I wrote an email, and they added them! I love when apps are in continuous improvement, and they show it! Best customer service ever :) plus, Ryan wrote a nice email notifying me that they added these cities for me!!

Smaller Countries and Social Aspect

I’ve throughly enjoyed my use of the app so far however I believe there is some error with whether smaller countries are counted as countries or territories. When I share the link to my map, countries such as Vatican City, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are marked as territories instead of countries. Additionally I think it would be neat if there was a way to follow other people and have collaborative travel “want” lists between two or more people. Maybe there could even be a way to make some pictures public for others to see as well. I love how you can share the links with other people and I think it would be even cooler to be able to follow and track other people’s travel adventures through the app. Overall, this app is one of the best I’ve seen so far and I look forward to using it more in the future! Thanks!

How IT started...

It started back in 2009 after a period of adventure and talking to other people who were on their travels. When discussing which places people had been to previously it became clear that something was needed to help people remember where they had been.

Then came the 'Eureka!' moment. We needed to devise a map that you could somehow record your travels on, not just with a pen, something more interesting than that but equally personal and unique.

At the time we were working on another product that used a foil method similar to scratch cards...why not cover the map in foil, which you then scratch off on the areas you've travelled to? Bingo!

After months of designing, testing and finding just the right materials and printing methods, we hit on the right formula and the Original Scratch Map (the white and gold one!) was born.

Scratch Maps are intended to be hung on your wall to serve as a reminder of your good times travelling, a way to plan your next adventure, and also provide a talking point when your friends are round. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you’ve ever tried to win a major lottery like Powerball or Mega Millions you know it’s virtually impossible, with the odds in the hundreds of millions to one.

But scratch-off tickets are a different story.

The odds are usually better than 1 in 5 that you’ll win something. So we sat down with a mathematician to figure out the best way to get the odds in your favor on scratch-off tickets.

To start our investigation into this story we compiled the overall odds of all the scratch-off games the Florida Lottery offers and most are in the range of 1 in 3-point-something to 1 in 4-point-something. That’s a better than 20% chance that you’ll at least get your money back.

Then we brought in Scott Hochwald, a math professor at the University of North Florida. He said the thing that’s the key to increasing your odds involves a trip to the Florida Lottery website .

Each scratch-off game is listed and it displays how many of the game’s top prizes remain. If the game has been out a long time with a lot of tickets sold but there are still a good number of top prizes, focus on those games.

“They don’t quite tell you how many tickets are left. But as time goes on, if a lot of the big prizes are left you can assume people are buying tickets,” said Hochwald.

News4JAX also asked Hochwald about the odds based on the cost of tickets.

There are, of course, $1 scratch-off tickets but there are also $10, $20 and even $50 tickets available. Hochwald did some calculations and it appears your odds of winning some sort of prize increase slightly based on the cost.

He compared $1 tickets to $10 tickets. His calculations showed if you bought $1,000 worth of $1 tickets you would get around $520 back on your original investment. But if you bought $1,000 worth of $10 tickets, you would get back around $584 of your original investment.

Hochwald also warned against taking geography into account.

That means if you see one game has a lot of top prizes left so you purchase a bunch of tickets all over Jacksonville, the harsh reality is the winning tickets could be in other parts of the state and you’ll never find them. It’s essentially impossible to tell.

And on the big lotteries like Mega Millions or Powerball, while there are not great tips to beat the system, one thing involves people who pick their birthdays. Keep in mind if you do this you limit yourself to numbers under 31 and limit the amount of numbers that can be drawn.

Offline maps

Apple Maps’ new offline maps feature is a game-changer for travelers, especially those venturing into areas with poor internet connectivity. Whether you’re camping in remote wilderness or avoiding data charges abroad, this feature ensures access to driving, walking, transit and cycling directions even with spotty internet.

To use offline maps, download the map of your destination while connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. Simply search in Apple Maps and select the option to download the offline map. You can customize the map’s size and storage space.

Apple Maps may prompt you to download an offline map based on upcoming trips or service availability predictions.

Offline maps include turn-by-turn navigation, detailed trail maps for parks, Apple Watch sync for walking directions, arrival estimates, public transit schedules and nearby points of interest. While offline, information remains accurate at the time of download. To update, connect to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Real-time electric vehicle charging availability

With the increasing availability of electric vehicles in dealerships and rental services, having precise information about EV charging stations is crucial.

Apple Maps now offers real-time updates on EV charging station availability, allowing users to filter by charging network, plug type, operating hours and other criteria. Users can also set their preferred charging network for convenience.

This feature proves invaluable, particularly for electric vehicle drivers navigating unfamiliar areas, providing reassurance and preventing last-minute charging crises.

Trail information

In iOS 17, trail information is now more comprehensive than ever before. Through Apple Maps, users can explore thousands of trails located in local, state and national parks across the United States. When you come across a hiking trail or campground of interest, you’ll find details such as trail length, photos, parking availability and the park’s information center contact number.

For Apple Watch users, watchOS 10 updates introduce user-friendly topographic maps featuring contour lines, hill shading, elevation markers and points of interest. These enhancements facilitate outdoor adventures and seamlessly integrate with offline maps on your iPhone when downloaded in advance and kept accessible during your visit.

Download maps for areas with unreliable phone service

Similar to Apple Maps, if you’re traveling outside the United States and concerned about phone data charges, or if you frequently visit areas with unreliable mobile phone service, consider downloading a map.

A downloaded map functions perfectly even without cell reception.

To download a portion of a map in Google Maps:

• Choose the area you wish to save.
• Click on your profile picture or initials located in the upper-right corner of the screen.
• Select “Offline maps” and then “Select your own map.” Adjust the zoom until you’ve highlighted the desired area for saving.
• Tap on “Download.” Your selected map section is now accessible even without an internet connection.

Keep track of your favorite spots using ‘lists’

Bookmark spots you like to go to or need for an emergency, like a shop, restaurant, parking or hospitals.

To bookmark a restaurant on Google Maps:

• Search for the restaurant by name. Once its details appear, check the options located to the right of “Directions.”
• Select the “Save” option and click on “New list” at the top of the subsequent screen. Name it something like “Best Burgers.”
• Tap “Create” in the upper-right corner.
• You have the option to keep your list private or select “Shared” and invite friends and family to contribute their favorite burger spots.
• To access your lists and individual places within a list, navigate to the main screen of Google Maps and tap “Saved” on the bottom row of the app.

After saving places in a list, you can tap on them to “Add a note about this place.”

In addition to lists, Google Maps offers options to save places under similar categories like “Want to go” or “Starred places.” This variety might seem overwhelming, so you can choose to use just one or utilize all three features differently.

Google has stated that it is continuously enhancing the Google Maps experience to facilitate the discovery of helpful information.

Use visual pointers for walking directions

Imagine you’re just a half-mile away from a restaurant listed in your “Best Burgers” compilation, but you’re uncertain about the walking route.

You have the option to click “Directions” in Google Maps for step-by-step instructions — or you can enhance those instructions significantly.

Simply tap “live” at the bottom right of the Google Maps screen and point your phone towards your surroundings. Note: Your phone might prompt you for permission to activate the camera.

Google overlays virtual arrows onto your screen, guiding you to your next left turn. It’s reminiscent of the Pokémon Go game, but tailored for pedestrian directions.

Exercise caution when using this feature. It’s important not to endanger yourself or others by constantly holding your phone in front of your face.

Apple Maps vs. Google Maps, which is better?

While the app you use might depend on your phone brand, the debate about which app is better is ongoing. According to Tom’s Guide , the answer might be Google Maps. However, apps are updating constantly so performance levels may vary.

There are many map apps available that can be downloaded on phones, no matter the brand.

According to data research published in Statista, Google Maps is the most downloaded map and navigation app in the U.S. with over 21 million downloads, not including the number of apps pre-installed on Android smartphones.

Waze , a community-based traffic and navigation app, was found to be downloaded 9.89 million times, coming in second, the research found. Waze is owned by Google.

Citymapper , a public transit app, was the third most downloaded app with almost 900,000 downloads, per the data research .

Multiple tornadoes swept through the west side of the state Tuesday, touching down in Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties.

Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas closing in July. Here's what's next.

After more than three decades of business, Las Vegas' famed Mirage Hotel and Casino is shuttering its doors.

The Las Vegas Strip business announced the closure Wednesday night according to a post on social media, noting the Nevada property will soon "transform."

"We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation and world-class hospitality,” the Mirage, which opened 34 years ago, posted on Facebook.

The Mirage will be ceasing operations on July 17, the post said.

'A new era'

The hotel is known for its man-made Mirage Volcano spewing fire and water since the hotel’s 1989 opening.

It is also home to a Cirque du Soleil show with Beatles music as well as the Siegfried and Roy’s white tigers show.

Hard Rock Las Vegas coming soon

The business announced the resort will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas.

"We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation, and world-class hospitality," the casino's Facebook post reads.

Hard Rock will pay nearly $80 million in severance packages for union and non-union employees who continue to work at the property until it closes, the post reads.

Helicopter Carrying Iran’s President Has Crashed, State Media Reports

A helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi of Iran and his foreign minister crashed on Sunday in the country’s mountainous northwest, according to state media, deepening the turmoil that has gripped the nation on both the international and domestic fronts in recent months.

Mr. Raisi, 63, was traveling from Iran’s border with Azerbaijan to inaugurate a joint dam project. The helicopter, carrying Mr. Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, state media reported, crashed near the city of Varzaghan around 1 p.m. local time, in bad weather and thick fog.

Search and rescue teams scoured an area of tall mountains and dense forest through rain and fog for more than 10 hours. At one point the authorities called off the aerial search because of the weather, dispatching on foot soldiers, elite commandos of the Revolutionary Guards and 40 rescue teams to locate the crash site.

Even well into the night, state media had not yet reported on casualties, or on the condition of the president or anyone else aboard. The cause of the crash was also unknown.

“There will be no disruption in the country’s operation,” Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in an address on state TV. “Senior officials are doing their work and I have advised them on the necessary points and all of the country’s operation will carry on smoothly and orderly.”

Mr. Raisi, a conservative who violently crushed dissent, is widely viewed as a possible successor to the supreme leader. The uncertainty over his fate comes during a particularly tumultuous period for Iran.

Its long shadow war with Israel burst into the open after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, setting off the war in Gaza and a cascade of strikes and counterstrikes across the region.

The hostilities became even more pronounced after Israel conducted airstrikes on a building in the Iranian Embassy complex in Syria in April. Iran retaliated with its first direct attack on Israel after decades of enmity, launching more than 300 drones and missiles toward the country, many of which were shot down.

Domestically, Iran is also facing widespread anger, with many residents calling for an end to clerical rule. Corruption and sanctions have gutted the economy, stoking frustrations.

In the last two years, the country has witnessed a domestic uprising, the Iranian currency plunging to a record low, water shortages intensified by climate change and the deadliest terrorist attack since the 1979 founding of the Islamic Republic.

If the president dies, the vice president takes over and elections must be organized within 50 days, said Ali Vaez, the Iran director of the International Crisis Group, an independent conflict prevention agency.

That, he said, would be “a major challenge for a country that is in the midst of a severe crisis of legitimacy at home and daggers drawn with Israel and the United States in the region.”

Mr. Raisi is a hard-line religious cleric who came of age during the country’s Islamic revolution. Under Iran’s theocratic system, Mr. Raisi, as president, is the second most powerful individual in Iran’s political structure after the supreme leader, Mr. Khamenei.

After becoming president in 2021, Mr. Raisi consolidated power and marginalized reformists who wanted to defuse tensions with the West. He repeatedly said that he pursued a policy of “strong diplomacy,” forging closer economic and security ties with Russia and China.

During Mr. Raisi’s tenure, Iran continued to expand its regional influence, backing proxies across the Middle East that have conducted strikes against Israel and the United States, as well as advancing the country’s nuclear program.

In the same period, Mr. Raisi oversaw a sweeping and deadly crackdown on domestic protesters, many of them women and young people, who had taken to the streets against the country’s ruling clerics. Rights groups said hundreds of protesters were killed by the nation’s security forces.

Mr. Raisi has been viewed as one of the front-runners to succeed Mr. Khamenei as supreme leader. One of his main rivals for that role is a son of Mr. Khamenei.

Despite the crash, some analysts said they did not expect a major change in Iran’s agenda abroad.

The nation’s supreme leader is responsible for setting all of the country’s policies, analysts said, while the president’s power comes from enacting those decisions.

“At one level, the outcome does not portend a sea change in how Iran formulates and acts upon its interests abroad,” said Ali Vaez, the Iran director for the International Crisis Group.

“It is the supreme leader who makes strategic decisions about foreign policy, albeit informed by the views of other key stakeholders, including the president.”

Mr. Abdollahian, the foreign minister, has been heavily involved in regional diplomacy with Arab countries. In recent months, he had also met in Qatar with leaders of the militant groups backed by Iran, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas, the group that led the Oct. 7 attack against Israel.

He was also engaged in secret indirect talks with the United States, in February and in May, in Oman to discuss defusing tensions and relieving sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program.
