Trek SL1000 review

Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - luckily it can get you a lot of bike

Paul Vincent

trek 1000 sl blue book

Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - and luckily it can get you a lot of bike. There's a huge range to choose from at this price, from commuting cycles to long-distance tourers, but if you're looking for something a little lighter and sportier you'll be pleased to know that for around £500 you can buy a machine that'll easily cope with distance rides such as sportives, as well as your day to day cycling, with a good dose of style thrown in.

The Trek SL1000, was a winner in Cycling Plus' 2006 budget race bikes of the year. >

Frame >The Trek frame is based on 7005 series aluminium tubing with butted main tubes and is 1,551g in the 56cm size tested. The welding is plain without any smoothing of the joins, and the paint and decals are an improvement on the previous year's model. We like the neatly executed mudguard bridge detailing between the chainstays.

The distinctive and unusual forward-sloping top-tube (it's higher at the seatpost) is an aspect of the 1000-1500 series that you'll either like or loathe, but the short head-tube enables a low riding position for time trialling that simply isn't possible on the Specialized with its taller head-tube. The handlebar height can be altered considerably by flipping the stem through 180 degrees to point upwards, and further adjustments can be effected in small increments by using the headset spacers provided. The inclusion of rack and mudguard eyes is a major plus point as far as versatility for commuting and general cycling is concerned, meaning that this frame is a good all-rounder.

> Equipment >Given that the £500 price point is largely focused on those who are just getting into their cycling, it is appropriate that Trek have specified the SL1000 with a triple chainset, because the range of gears this provides is more important than the small weight saving of a double chainset. The anatomic 'pistol grip' handlebars have a slightly deeper and lower bend than those of the Specialized, and the radically sloping stem provides a greater than average range of handlebar height settings, though it doesn't win points for style. The Shimano Sora levers work well with your hands rested on the hoods, but it's a long reach to the brake hood button levers when your hands are on the drops.

>An eight-speed Shimano cassette means the transition to a smaller gear is a noticeably bigger step than with a 10-speed system, but the testers felt that it hardly affected their ability to maintain a constant pedalling cadence on undulating roads.

> > Wheels >The Trek wheels are of the traditional variety in using 32 spokes per wheel, laced in a 3-cross pattern to strong, reputable Alex rims - each spoke is crossed by two others, between hub and rim - with unbranded but smooth-running hubs. This year's wheels are 115g heavier per pair than those of the previous year's model that were outwardly similar but used Rigida Chrina rims instead. Trek have retained the tried and trusted Bontrager Select tyres that are probably the best budget tyre we have come across for vertical compliance, and they grip tenaciously in the wet. Their slightly larger 25mm width means they are more resistant to pinch punctures than 23mm tyres, but they'll need to be changed for a 23mm tyre if mudguards are to be fitted to provide enough clearance.

> Handling

The Trek's butted tubes make for a lively performance out on the road and were it not for the weight of the components, this could easily be confused with a bike costing twice the price. There really is very little to criticise when ridden on the flat, but at a shade under 21lb its bulk, which is mainly centred on the wheels, makes it harder for the rider to change tempo on a climb. That said, the fun and lively nature of the ride makes you want to take the long way home on a warm balmy summer evening.

Though odd looking, the system of using spacers stacked to give the greatest handlebar height didn't cause our testers any worries, and the time triallists will warm to the fact that the spacers can be omitted completely to get a low, aerodynamic riding position. > > Verdict

The Trek won our budget race bike of 2006 award by virtue of its versatility and now receives a carbon seatpost, but it's 115g heavier overall because of the new wheels. Compared to the previous model year, the Specialized has seen the biggest raft of improvements which, like the Trek, include a carbon seatpost in place of an aluminium one, together with a higher spec and marginally lighter wheels. >Iit's hard to ignore the Trek's inclusion of mudguard and rack eyes. These make the it a very versatile bike, a quality that can't be overlooked if the bike is to be used year-round for different types of riding. If versatility is your bag, the Trek should be right up your street.

Is Trek 1000 A Good Bike Or Not Worth It?

Trek 1000 is a bicycle that was first introduced in the 1980s and gained a lot of popularity in the 1990s when it seemed like everyone in the middle class owned and rode them. However, is Trek 1000 a good bike?

Trek 1000 is a good bike because it embodies a comfortable seat, a lightweight Alcoa 6061 T6 Aluminum frame, and a Tange Seiki Sealed headset. In addition, it has a Trek EnerGel Lycra saddle and a host of other qualities, making it one of the best masterpieces that any road enthusiast would cherish.

Trek 1000 is neither a speed bike nor a mountain bike. The bike is designed for folks who enjoy long-distance riding on the road rather than mountain biking, even though it isn’t flawless.

The Trek 1000 is practically an ideal bike for those who enjoy riding on the road, and it delivers good performance. If you’re thinking about purchasing a Trek 1000, this walk-through can help you determine whether it’s a vintage worth spending your money on.

Is Trek 1000 A Good Bike

Trek 1000 Bike Specifications

is trek 1000 a good bike.

Let’s Investigate The Features

The Trek 1000 is equipped with a variety of high-quality components that work together to create a dependable mountain bike. These are:

1. An Excellent Lightweight Frame And Fork

In the 1990s, the Alcoa 6061 T6 Aluminum frame was among the lightest. With a weight of only 20 pounds, the Trek 1000 was a portable marvel for those who sought flexibility and seamless performance above everything else.

Carbon fiber bicycle frames are now available and are said to be potentially more robust than aluminum. However, it isn’t easy to match the capabilities of the Alcoa 6061 T6 frame.

Despite having a lighter frame than other models, the Alcoa 6061 T6 remains one of the most durable and dependable products in the market.

The riders were thrilled by the bike’s performance thanks to high-quality craftsmanship as well as the incredible incorporation of the frame and Tange Cro-Moly fork.

Trek 1000 qualities

Furthermore, enthusiasts appreciated Trek 1000 not only because it was extraordinarily light compared to other models in its price range but also because of its reliability in terms of suspension, shock absorption, and other features. The sturdy frame is designed for speed and rapid handling.

2. An Elegant Design

A good frame may boast strength and dependability, but it will come short in terms of aesthetic appeal in most cases. Trek 1000 isn’t blemished by that since its lightweight frame produced some of the best painting jobs back in the ’90s and still does.

Almost no one could find fault with the bike’s design or construction as a whole. Seeing a Trek 1000 on the street is an instant appraisal for those who are familiar with it.

Its electric blue color appears wet with a black splattering which adds to its allure. It is even more attractive when combined with white decals, which add a touch of excellence.

3. Low Maintenance Cost Coupled With Good Performance

Long-distance cycling needs a bike that requires minimal maintenance, and that’s precisely what the Trek 1000 gives you. The fact that the Trek 1000 could be used for hours without mechanical issues cropping up was probably one of the most appealing features for most people. It is ideal for any cyclist who fancies long road rides.

When it comes to continuous use on the road, very few bikes edge out Trek 1000 at the mid-range level.

4. Shimano 400 EX7-Speed SIS Indexing

Trek 1000 is easier to ride up hills than similar bikes in its class, thanks to its gearing Shimano 400 EX7 gearing configuration. Similar bikes will not be able to compete with it when riding downhill or sprinting.

The positioning of the shifters will, however, not go unnoticed. Shifters are typically found on the handlebars of classic bikes. The Trek 1000, on the other hand, has these shifters located below, making it a little more difficult for riders to shift appropriately hence resulting in instability.

Trek 1000 weight

However, after a few rides, the shifters would no longer be an issue.

5. Additional Features

Trek 1000 incorporates SR Anatomic Alloy handlebars, Bontrager Approved stem, Shimano 500 EX 7-speed Front Derailleur, Shimano 400 EX 7-speed Rear Derailleur, among other incredible features, which make it ideal for long-distance road biking.

Its design hinted at the future of road bikes, blending a modern aesthetic with advanced construction for its time. This bike's evolution over the years has transformed it from a cutting-edge option to a cherished vintage piece, maintaining its popularity and value.

Specifications and Build

This iconic bike is known for its Alcoa 6061 T6 Aluminum frame, providing durability and lightness. The Trek 1000 includes a Tange Cro-Moly fork, Shimano Exage and 400 EX components, Bontrager Sport crankset, and 700 x 25c Trek IsoTech 3 tires, forming a blend of reliability and performance. Notably, the bike's weight is approximately 23 lbs, making it slightly heavy compared to contemporary models.

Performance and Riding Experience

The Trek 1000's 14-speed configuration and Shimano gear set support long-distance riding and steep climbs. Its design, with skinny tires and an 8-gear setup, enables fast speeds suitable for long routes. However, the gear shifter's placement behind the handlebar may require an adjustment period for those used to more modern designs.

What We Like

  • Timeless Design: The Trek 1000's classic look remains stylish and practical.
  • Lightweight Frame: Its aluminum construction ensures speed and ease of handling.
  • Climbing Efficiency: The gear set is optimized for handling hills and slopes.
  • Low Maintenance: Known for its reliability, the Trek 1000 doesn't frequently break down.
  • Durability: The frame has proven its longevity and robustness over time.

What We Don't Like

  • Stability Issues: Some users have reported occasional instability.
  • Unconventional Shifting Style: The gear shifter location may be inconvenient for new users.
  • Riding Position for Beginners: The aerodynamic riding position might be uncomfortable for new cyclists.
  • Not Ideal for Competitive Cycling: The Trek 1000 might not be the best choice for racing due to its weight and componentry.
  • Maintenance of Vintage Parts: Finding replacement parts can be challenging, requiring specialized bike shop assistance.

The Trek 1000 is a commendable choice for those seeking a vintage road bike with a blend of reliability and performance. Pricing and Availability

Although Trek no longer sells this bike you can find it quite easily on second-hand websites. While researching for this review I came across around a dozen similar bikes on eBay. They ranged in price from $100 to $250.

The prices will now depend mainly on the age and condition of the parts/paint. These bikes are flexible and will accept off-brand parts if you ever want to resurrect one.

Competing Products

The Trek SL 1000 is a relatively affordable road bike designed for everyday use. It's no longer widely available but Trek kept it simple and reliable with the parts and construction.

There's a large market for bikes like this as they're perfect for adults who aren't fully into road bikes. They can be used for a trip to the shops or commuting to work.

If you're looking for an alternative to this bike I would recommend looking at >brands like Giant and Cannondale

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are trek road bikes so heavy.

Some Trek road bikes are known for their heavy weight, which is attributed to several design features and components. These include the T47 shell, disc brakes, and IsoSpeed systems, as well as oversized tires, built-in storage compartments, and wide tire clearance.

Are Trek aluminum frames good?

Trek's aluminum frames, particularly their Alpha Aluminum, are highly regarded in the cycling community. These frames are known for being strong, light, and providing a ride quality comparable to many carbon frames. Trek's aluminum frames are refined and advanced, incorporating technologies like Invisible Weld Technology, which enhances structural integrity while keeping the frames aesthetically pleasing and lightweight. These frames are durable, reasonably lightweight, and affordable, making them a popular choice among cyclists.

Are Trek frames made in China?

Yes, a significant portion of Trek bike frames are manufactured in China, as well as in Taiwan, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. While Trek designs its bikes and accessories in the US, over 99% of their production occurs outside the US, predominantly in China and Taiwan. This trend reflects the broader global bike manufacturing landscape, where many brands outsource production to these countries. Trek's US facilities are primarily used for research and development (R&D) and assembly processes.

Balance and the excellent components that makeup this bike.

For city rides you need to include a pair of in line brakes.

A joy to ride. I like the ultra light aluminum frame, with the carbon fork and posts. Until I'm ready to send the extra money for all carbon this is the ride for me.

I loved my Panasonic Sport LX and I still use it. My Trek has it beat all around.

Cheap, stiff, great components, light

FLAT TIRES!!!!!!!!!!!

This bike is fantastic for the price paid. As Trek's entry level bike it is not the best thing money can buy, but it is far from the worse. I ride it almost every day to my job 10 miles away, ride it back another 10, and occasionally will do a long ride (100+ miles). I recently did one up to Cleveland from Pittsburgh. It does get a lot of flats although, riding through Pittsburgh's bad roads kill me.

Economical. Shifts smooth. Little levers are great and convienent for me. I am minus the four fingers on right hand. Have apposing thumb.

Haven't found any.

This bike rides like a dream. Only paid $400.00. Came with all the latest componentry. Shimano Tiple shifting and brakes. Shifts very smooth. Extremely light, Bontrager carbon forks and seatpost. Ultra light aluminum frame. Eats the hills up. I am primarilly a runner but this bike fits the bill. The wheels are true. Just bought profile aero bars for tri.s. Very pleased.

Stiff frame. True wheels.

Shifters are tabs and brake levers so constantly changing hand positions.

I got this bike to try road cycling. I am hooked. Put in 3000 miles the first year. Very good beginners bike with 3rd front ring. Nice to know its there if you run into some steep hills. Stiff frame to build on. Upgrades can always be put on better frame if you like riding. I would recommend this bike if your on a tight budget and are looking for the most for the money.

Stiff frame, easy ride, great entry level bike. If you want to upgrade it is well worth it. Durable and cool colors. Responsive and good grometry.

Stock components good for only around town and not for hills. Saddle is terrible and the Sora thumb shifter tend to break easily.

Bought the Trek 1000sl Flare Duotone after using neighbors Specialized Allez in a Local Tri. Stock the bike is great for entry level riders who ride 50 miles or less. Saddle is junk, and components are ok for short daily riding or commuting. Love the stiffness for climbing and comfortable ride. After upgrading components the bike handles better then a 2500 or newer 2.5 and is comparable to igher end aluminum bikes. Bike now weighs in @ 19.25 pounds I will have this bike for a long long time!!!

Specialized Allez, Giant OCR.

great with triple front stiff frame for better power distribution carbon fork and seatpost

shifter hard to work and impossible to use while in drops.

this is the best entry level bike there is

Bought as an entry level rider one year ago. Have never ridden any high priced bikes, so im limited on experience, but quality is good for the price.

Affordable. The difference in performance between this bike and a high-end bike are minimal for a casual/entry level rider; and clearly not worth the drastic price gap.

It might get you hooked on road biking (as it did to me), and make you think about upgrading and spending a ton of $ on a higher end bike (again, as it did to me).

The best entry-level road bike out there. I got the Trek 1000, and it got me hooked on cycling. Put about 1500 miles in a year, never had any significant issues. I love this bike and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into the sport.

Solid ride, price

Seat sucks, little carbon, 8 cog, Sora shifters

Bought a Trek 1000 05. This Bike is very good. It is very solid riding and quick considering it's a 8 cog. I just changed out those heavy, crappy tires and added neuvations with kevlar tires along with ti skewers. Shaved about 1 lb and added a much smoother spin and gained a few rpms. Added aero bars and a carbon post. If looks matters (not cost), add those rims.

The bike's reliable rim brakes make stopping efficient even on wet or slippery surfaces. With the Trek 1200, maneuvering through winding roads or bustling streets is a cinch.

Its lightweight Alpha SL Aluminum frame and precise steering mechanism ensure impeccable control and stability, making each ride safe and fluid.

What We Like Most About The Trek 1200

The Trek 1200 is a paragon of mid-range road bikes, combining functionality with style. Its lightweight aluminum frame, a trademark of Trek, offers both durability and a nimble riding experience.

Cyclists rave about its precise shifting, courtesy of the reliable componentry, ensuring a smooth transition between gears on varying terrains. Another commendable feature is its ergonomic design, emphasizing rider comfort during prolonged use – perfect for lengthy commutes or extended training sessions.

The bike's aesthetics don't fall short either; its sleek, modern design and classic Trek branding have a contemporary flair and timeless elegance. The Trek 1200 seamlessly marries performance with aesthetics, making it a favorite among many.

What We Don’t Like About The Trek 1200

While the Trek 1200 boasts many commendable features, it has shortcomings. Some riders have expressed concerns over its stock saddle, finding it somewhat uncomfortable during longer rides, necessitating an upgrade for optimal comfort.

Additionally, its aluminum frame is lightweight and agile, but it doesn't absorb shocks and road vibrations as efficiently as carbon frames, leading to a slightly harsher ride on uneven terrains.

Some critics have also pointed out the bike's limited versatility. It excels on roads, but it's not designed for off-road or gravel adventures. And since this is an older model, you must explore the used bike trade to find a model to purchase.

Maintenance Tips For Trek 1200

The Trek 1200 is an excellent bike with an aluminum frame and a carbon fiber fork. As bike enthusiasts, we know the importance of keeping our bikes in good shape.

Firstly, remember to clean your bike regularly. We recommend using a rag or, if it's particularly dirty, soap and water to remove any grime or debris. As part of this process, inspect the frame and components for any signs of wear, such as cracks or damage.

This will help prevent unwanted surprises on your rides. Tire care is essential for smooth and efficient rides. Check the tire pressure frequently and add air if needed.

This helps you ride comfortably, handle potholes better, and reduce the risk of punctures. Don't forget to inspect the tires for wear and replace them when necessary.

When it comes to the gears, the chain plays a crucial role in seamless shifting. It's important to clean and lube the chain regularly to increase its lifespan and ensure smooth gear changes. Lubrication can also protect the chain from rust and corrosion.

Adjust the brake levers and check the rim brakes for any damage. You should also inspect the brake cables for any fraying or rust, which could affect their performance. Replace them if you notice any problems or feel that your brakes aren't as responsive as they should be.

Finally, don't forget the bottom bracket and wheel hubs. These components are essential for a smooth ride, providing support and ensuring proper rotation. Check for any play or excessive movement in the bracket or hub, and address potential issues as soon as possible.

Trek 1200 In Comparison

When comparing the Trek 1200 to other Trek bikes, one of the standout features is its lightweight aluminum frame. This makes the bike more suitable for versatile riding such as tackling hills or commuting in the city.

The bike also has a very steep headtube angle which allows riders to climb steep uphill roads more comfortably and efficiently. The Trek 1200 comes with some good quality components, including:

  • Bontrager Race Carbon fork
  • Shimano Tiagra STI Dual Control brake levers
  • Bontrager Ergo handlebar
  • Aluminum stem

While some Trek road bikes have made the shift to disc brakes, the Trek 1200 still uses rim brakes. This might make the bike less appealing for riders who prioritize braking performance, but it also helps to keep the bike on a tight budget for those looking for an affordable option.

Weakness: Not as light as carbon. Low cost of this bike makes it unlikely to get high end components. Trek seems to provide better than average frames and lower than average (for the money) components, so more than likely you will want to upgrade as much as possible. Great bike for the money.

    5. ★★★★★. ★★★★★. Strength: Feels lightweight, carbon fork. Weakness: The blue paint chips very easily, my foot hits the front wheel when I turn sharp corners. After riding mountain bikes for years, I decided to buy a road bike. This is a great road bike, it comes with a carbon seatpost and a carbon fork.

The petals show wear, but function as new. The bike has a few dings, but nothing detrimental to the expected performance. Thus the asking price of only $250. The front tire is practically new, the rear tire shows some wear, but probably good for several hundred miles. The wheels are Bontrager Select.
