A Perfect Summer Day in Jackson Hole

There are many ways to have the perfect summer day in Jackson. Here are a few of my favorites.

Keep Jackson Hole wild.

What makes Jackson Hole special is what will continue to keep it special: a long-standing tradition of awe and respect for the outdoors.

Since the original settlers made their way to Jackson Hole, the wilderness and recreation areas haven’t changed much. And that’s exactly what locals and visitors love so much about the valley. But clean mountain air, vast open spaces where wildlife thrive, and streambeds filled with trout are only possible thanks to a concerted effort to keep them that way. We want you to ski our powder, fish our rivers, and run our trails—but we also hope you’ll leave no trace. Please join us in taking care of what takes our breath away.

Howdy, Stranger. Welcome to Jackson Hole.

Jackson Hole is the West’s famous gateway to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and home to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, one of the top-rated ski and snowboard destinations in the world. But this wild place has so much more to offer.

Springtime gives way to rafting adventures. During the summer, the area is known for everything from alpine hikes to mountain biking to epic wildlife viewing. In the fall, golden leaves illuminate the valley floor and jagged, snow-capped peaks provide views that you can’t take your eyes off of. Under a blanket of snow, winter is when the slopes come alive with power hounds.

In town, cultural experiences abound. Art galleries and public installations line the streets. There’s always a concert or theater performance to take in, and fine dining is elevated to an art form. Ask a local and they’ll tell you that they’re always finding new adventures. With a little exploration, you can too.

All about Jackson Hole.

What is the difference between jackson and jackson hole.

Jackson Hole refers to the 42-mile long valley between the Teton and Gros Ventre mountains. Trappers and mountain men used “hole” to describe high mountain valleys. Within Jackson Hole are the towns of Jackson, Teton Village, Kelly, Wilson, Moran, Moose, and Hoback Junction and also Grand Teton National Park. Jackson, population approximately 10,000, is the largest town in Jackson Hole.

What is Jackson famous for?

The combination of wildlife, wide-open spaces, jagged peaks, and Wild West culture is what makes us one of the top year-round destinations in the world. Outdoor adventurers know us as a gateway to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, one of the world’s most challenging ski areas, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and home to America’s first guided climbing service, Exum Mountain Guides. Our most famous celebrity is 26-year-old grizzly bear 399, mother of 22 cubs, although you might also catch a glimpse of actors such as Harrison Ford or Sandra Bullock, since we’ve starred in many Westerns and extreme adventure films. The unique elk antler arches around the Jackson Town Square are one of our most photographed spots. And then there’s the food and art…

Get to Know Jackson Hole

When should I visit?

With an authentic, spirited, and distinctive Western mountain character, Jackson Hole is a popular year-round tourist destination. More than 2.6 million people visit the valley annually. Truly, anytime is a good time to visit Jackson Hole. Every season has its own personality. The most popular season is summer. Most summer visitors come for Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Grand Teton National Park is in Jackson Hole, and Yellowstone is just north of the valley. Between them, these parks receive upwards of 3 million visitors every year.

According to U.S. News & World Report Travel, the best months to visit Jackson Hole are April, May, September, and October. The magazine picked these months, which are Jackson Hole’s two shoulders seasons, because travelers seeking a value can find lower rates and also restaurant specials then. Also, coming during either shoulder season means there will be fewer tourists.

How do I get to Jackson Hole?

Several airlines fly into the Jackson Hole Airport, which is about 20 minutes from downtown Jackson. It is the only airport in the country to be inside a national park. (Make sure to get a window seat.) Getting here has never been easier. There are non-stop flights from major cities on American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines.

In the warmer months, consider making Jackson Hole part of a road trip. There are incredibly scenic routes to the valley from almost every direction and, along the way these trips have interesting monuments and attractions.

How far in advance should I book lodging?

A July or August vacation to Jackson Hole requires the most planning because those are the busiest months. The earlier you book your lodging, the more options you’ll have. This doesn’t mean a last-minute summer trip is impossible, but with less than a month’s planning you might not get your first, or second, or third choice of lodging, whether you’re looking at campgrounds or a luxury resort. This advice also applies if you’re visiting for a specific event, regardless of what time of year it is.

In winter, Teton Village is the hot spot to stay for the lively après scene and convenience of being steps from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. April through May and November are best for spontaneous travel. During these months, most of the ski areas and some roads in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are closed, but hotel rooms have more availability compared to busier times of the year.

What kind of wildlife will I see?

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the few remaining intact ecosystems on Earth, is home to more than 200 species of animals including wolves, black and grizzly bears, bison (did you know that Yellowstone bison comprise the nation’s largest bison population on public land?), elk, and nearly 60 other species of mammals. We’re also home to more than 300 species of birds including fantastic raptors like bald eagles, ospreys, and peregrine falcons. You might not see them, but we also have 16 species of fish, six species of reptiles (non-poisonous), and four species of amphibians.

Please help preserve this incredible natural treasure for future generations by observing wildlife from a distance, never feeding the animals, extinguishing wildfires, and driving slowly.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Occupying a large chunk of Teton Village in the northwest corner of the valley, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a vacation destination unto itself. The primary resort area in the valley, this property boasts several hotels and timeshares and an adventure park, not to mention a variety of dining options on top and below the mountain. However, the main reason people visit the resort is to take advantage of the skiing; located at the base of Rendezvous Mountain, the resort offers prime access to 2,500 acres of ski runs and 4,139 feet of vertical drop. And with more than 400 inches of snowfall annually, it's no wonder why the area is considered to be one of the best ski resorts in the country.

Skiing isn't the only activity here. During the summertime, the resort offers visitors numerous opportunities to hike and mountain bike as well as paraglide. Recent visitors also said that a ride on the Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is a must, no matter the season. The 12-minute tram ride runs to the top of Rendezvous Mountain, allowing for breathtaking views of the Teton Mountains. If heights aren't your thing, don't fret. Travelers said there are so many activities to do there you'll likely never be bored. Some suggested arriving at the village as early as possible, as you'll probably end up staying until closing time.

Grand Teton National Park Grand Teton National Park

Boasting a whopping 310,000 acres of jagged, snow-capped peaks, verdant forests and crystal-clear alpine lakes,  Grand Teton National Park  is the highlight of any trip to Jackson Hole. It was amidst these stunning mountains that nomadic Paleo-Indians spent their summers almost 11,000 years ago and that America's 19th-century fur-trading industry thrived. Now, Grand Teton National Park plays the role of wild wonderland, offering visitors a taste of the mighty wilderness that pioneers encountered a couple of centuries ago.

There are numerous reasons to visit Grand Teton. To get a feel for the park, take a drive along the U.S. Route 89 (the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway) which traces the eastern side of the stunning Jackson Lake and continues north to the entrance of  Yellowstone National Park . However, don't spend all your time behind the wheel. Opportunities to hike, mountain climb, cross-country ski and fish are abundant. And keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of Grand Teton's full-time residents, which include moose, elk and bison. Bears and coyotes also call the park home, so take extra precautions when heading out on a hike or setting up camp.

National Elk Refuge National Elk Refuge free

Every autumn, Jackson Hole resonates from the distinctive mating calls of one of its most prominent residents: elk. These large, deer-like creatures have roamed Jackson Hole and the nearby Teton Mountains by the thousands for many years, but they still have difficulty finding food during the harsh winter months. So as temperatures begin to drop, the Hole's herds make their way to the National Elk Refuge, a massive non-enclosed sanctuary. Visit the refuge in winter to find them waiting for spring thaw, munching on staff-provided alfalfa pellets.

While at the refuge, you can observe the animals from your car, or you can tag along on a guided sleigh ride (during the winter months). If you want to spot the most elk, plan your visit for the winter months. Travelers who visited the refuge during the warmer months reported seeing little to no elk. But those who did make the trek here during prime elk-viewing season were surprised by the amount of activity at the refuge and pleased by how close they were able to get to the animals. Many also strongly recommended scheduling the guided sleigh ride tour to get a unique look at the elk in their habitats and highly praise the guides for their expertise. If you sign up for this, make sure to wear plenty of warm layers.

Jackson Hole Playhouse Jackson Hole Playhouse

Just because the sun's gone down and the ski lifts have closed doesn't mean the fun has to stop. In the evenings, valley visitors head to the Jackson Hole Playhouse. This small dinner theater in downtown Jackson is housed in the oldest building in town, and is famous for its fun atmosphere and quality performances. The productions are so good, some past audience members have compared them to those on Broadway, despite the venue's diminutive size.

Guests are welcome to skip the dining portion of the evening and come only for the show, but many recent visitors urged future travelers to reconsider – cast members of the night's show not only serve the food, but serenade diners. Most also gave high marks for the food served, as well as the friendly hospitality.

Granite Hot Springs Granite Hot Springs

Jackson Hole's many natural attractions may cater primarily to adventure junkies, but the Granite Hot Springs are reserved solely for those in need of some rest and relaxation. Open during the winter and summer, this thermal concrete pool offers bathers beautiful views of the surrounding Bridger-Teton National Forest. The water's average temps range from a steamy 93 degrees in summer to 112 degrees in winter. Visitors can also take advantage of the area's scenic hiking and snowshoeing paths, or try whitewater rafting through the nearby Hoback Junction.

Recent visitors claimed that the scenery alone is worth the trip, saying it is a must-do. Nestled among the Gros Ventre Mountains, the hot springs are 7,000 feet above sea level, so you can only imagine the views your eyes will be treated to. Because the springs are located on the side of a mountain, the road leading up to the springs is not in the best of conditions. Travelers reported the road to be unpaved and gravely, but stressed to future visitors that the attraction is worth the climb, and if drivers simply exercise caution when driving, they can navigate it successfully.

National Museum of Wildlife Art National Museum of Wildlife Art

Combining Jackson Hole's love for the arts with its age-old respect for local fauna, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is definitely worth a visit. Located less than 3 miles north of downtown Jackson – just off Route 89 – this small museum is home to more than 5,000 works of wildlife art from more than 550 artists. Some pieces even date back to 2500 B.C. While the museum features several European pieces as well as works from Africa and New Zealand, American works dominate the 14 galleries.

Recent guests were impressed by the quality of art displayed here and said you don't need to be an art specialist to appreciate and enjoy this museum. Travelers also enjoyed the panoramic views the property afforded of the  National Elk Refuge , with some visitors able to spot animals from the museum. Make sure to check out the outdoor art, particularly the nearly mile-long Sculpture Trail, which features sculptures of area elk traversing the terrain. Others were particularly impressed with the Children’s Discovery Gallery, which includes a puppet theater, animal costumes and a reading nook.

Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum

With a stop by the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, travelers can learn about the area's Wild West history. Through artifacts, historical narratives and photographs, visitors will glimpse exciting characters like animal trappers, dude ranchers and cowboys, as well as the Native Americans that first inhabited the region. The museum also offers various specialty programs and events for travelers, including walking tours of the town of Jackson and local author talks.

Despite its small size, recent visitors said that the attraction is chock full of interesting information, and definitely worth your time, especially for those interested in American history. Many reviewers said it's a great place to bring children for the attraction's animal exhibits and noted the knowledge and warmth of the staff helped make their experience at the museum a memorable one.

Snow King Mountain Snow King Mountain

If you're looking to add a dash of history to your downhill run, consider a visit to the Snow King Resort in Jackson. Founded in 1939, Snow King was Wyoming's first established ski area. Ever since, avid winter sports enthusiasts have flocked here for a taste of Jackson powder. The resort boasts more than 400 acres of skiable terrain – 110 acres of which can be used for night skiing – and 1,571 feet of vertical drop. Novice skiers take note: only 50 percent of Snow King runs cater to beginners and intermediates. For easier skiing terrain, consider visiting  Grand Targhee  instead. Also located within Snow King are several areas reserved for snowboarding and tubing, as well as an ice rink and lodgings that cater to moderate budgets.

Many recent travelers agreed that the property is a bit dated for a resort but appreciated the close proximity to the town of Jackson (less than a mile and accessible via the Start bus) in comparison to the other hot spots in the area. Visitors recommended taking a ride up the ski lift for amazing views of the mountain. And if you're here during the summer, don't leave without a ride on the alpine slide, especially if you've got kids in tow.

Grand Targhee Resort Grand Targhee Resort

For those of you who aren't quite ready for the black diamond slopes at the  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , the Grand Targhee Resort offers easier, more family-friendly runs. Located in Alta, Wyoming – a small town about 38 miles northwest of Jackson – this resort has claimed two of the Teton Mountains as its own. Here you'll find more than 2,500 acres of ski terrain that sees an average of 500 inches of snowfall each year. A sizeable portion of the resort caters to beginner and intermediate skiers, plus you can take ski lessons at Grand Targhee. However, recent visitors said that more advanced powder hounds will find several runs that cater to their skill level as well.

Recent travelers enjoyed their time at Grand Targhee Resort and noted that the resort's small size meant fewer crowds, which was a much appreciated reprieve from Jackson Hole's more congested slopes. Some travelers strongly encouraged a visit to the on-site naturalist, whose knowledge in the region's geography and botany enhanced their experience at the resort. Others, however, said if you're a skier who's looking for a challenge, try a different resort.

Jackson Hole Winery Jackson Hole Winery

This unique winery is located more than 6,000 feet above sea level at the base of the Teton Mountains, making it one of the highest wineries in the country. The grapes are grown in Sonoma, California , and then transported to Jackson Hole where the winemaking process begins. The winery's founder wanted to experiment with making wine at high altitude, where there is 18% less oxygen making for a slower fermentation process. Judging by the rave reviews from visitors, the results turned out great. Visitors also enjoyed the diverse selection of wines and said the on-site sommeliers were knowledgeable. The tasting room is located in a rustic barn setting, and there are picnic tables and chairs outside so visitors can take in views of the mountains after.

During the summer months, the winery is open every day except Tuesdays from 12 – 5 p.m. During the winter, it's open Thursday through Sunday from 12 – 4:30 p.m. Tastings are by appointment only, and guests can call ahead to reserve. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own snacks and utensils should they want to eat. Tastings cost $30 per person for groups up to seven people; those in groups with more than seven people will pay $40 per person.

Jackson Hole Horseback Riding Jackson Hole Horseback Riding

A guided trail ride is one of the best ways to experience the Cowboy State, and Jackson Hole has plenty of riding ranches for travelers to choose from. Teton Village Trail Rides offers one- and two-hour ride options that bring guests through the mountains and provide views of Snake River Ranch, Teton Mountain Resort and surrounding Jackson Hole. The company also offers a child-friendly horse adventure that allows kids to ride for 30 minutes while their parents lead the horse on a rope. Visitors say the rides are safe, and guides are knowledgeable. Ride options cost $65, $100 and $30, respectively.

Spring Creek Ranch is another popular option that also offers one- and two-hour rides. These guided journeys take riders along the East Gros Ventre Butte, providing picturesque views of the Tetons. Past riders were amazed by the scenery. One hour excursions cost about $60 while two-hour rides come in at $80. (Though reviewers generally loved their rides, they advised future travelers to skip staying at the ranch due to dated accommodations.)

trip in jackson wyoming

Cross Country Skiing Cross Country Skiing

Winter visitors who want to explore the snow without hitting the slopes should consider one of Jackson Hole's many cross country skiing options. Teton Pines Nordic Center offers almost 10 miles of groomed trails, and Shooting Star Nordic Track provides about 9 miles of trails with varied terrain. You can also opt to ski in nearby Grand Teton National Park – the most popular route is to Jenny Lake and back. There of plenty of equipment rental companies around downtown Jackson including Skinny Skis and Hoback Sports. Rentals usually cost between $25 and $45.

There are also plenty of guided cross country skiing options around which are a great choice if you’'e traveling with a large group or if it's your first time cross country skiing. On a tour, you'll learn the proper techniques for cross country skiing. Plus, guides can provide educational information about the natural surroundings and wildlife you encounter while you're skiing.  For a guided excursion, consider The Hole Hiking Experience or EcoTour Adventures. A half-day guided cross country ski trip usually costs around $145 per person. However, companies don't often include skis in their fees; you'll have to rent those on your own.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do in jackson hole, best shopping, best restaurants, best time to visit jackson hole, how to get there, how to get around.

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Home to Grand Teton National Park, world-class ski slopes, and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a destination unlike any other. While it has a strong association with Westernwear, antler decor, and the occasional piece of taxidermy, it also comes with an unrivaled level of authenticity that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. Victoria Gonzalez, lead Pathfinder at The Cloudveil, describes the region as "the intersection of wilderness and the resilient American spirit," somewhere travelers can go to experience a "flourishing cultural arts center with celebrated restaurants, a playground for year-round recreational opportunities … and natural wonder."

Jackson Hole refers to a valley made up of smaller towns — the largest one being Jackson — encircled by the Gros Ventre and Teton mountain ranges. Given the area's natural resources and location amid the untouched wilderness, travelers should shoulder a certain level of responsibility when visiting. Taylor Phillips, founder of Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures, recommends following a few key guidelines: "Don't disturb wildlife, [and] keep at a minimum of 25 yards from all wildlife and 100 yards from bears and wolves. Most importantly, don't cause the wildlife to change their behavior."

Whether you're interested in wildlife safaris, hiking trails, or ski resorts — or you simply want to breathe in its fresh air and enjoy the mountain views — here's our guide to all things Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Courtesy of Four Seasons

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole: Tucked away at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole welcomes guests to a peaceful mountain lodge equipped with every amenity and convenience, including ski-in, ski-out accommodations. Outside of ski season, the team behind the 155-room resort ensures travelers take advantage of both Teton Village as well as greater Jackson Hole. Ask the concierge to arrange a personalized itinerary that incorporates all of your interests — from fly fishing on the Snake River to moose spotting in Grand Teton National Park — all while making sure you can enjoy some downtime on the property. The resort’s spa and heated pools are a welcome treat when shaking off any remaining jetlag or sensitivity to the altitude.

Caldera House: If you want a feeling of having your own space but still want the conveniences of a luxury hotel, book one of the two or four-bedroom suites at Caldera House . The Teton Village hotel is situated next to the Jackson Hole Mountain Tram — a skier’s dream — but it’s designed to provide guests with privacy and a stress-free vacation. Valet parking, Peloton bikes, a cedar dry sauna, a heated outdoor infinity plunge, and the Mudroom (where you can rent or buy outdoor gear) can be used at leisure, and the knowledgeable concierge team is at the ready-to-book trail rides, wildlife safaris, private helicopter tours, guided hikes, and more.

The Cloudveil, Autograph Collection: Located right on Town Square, The Cloudveil is conducive to exploring all of the restaurants, shops, and activities in downtown Jackson while simultaneously serving as the ultimate jumping-off point to the rest of the valley. Opened in May 2021, the 200-room property has a feeling of novelty paired with an unequivocal sense of place. The custom wood and leather furnishings, outdoor pool and hot tub, Peloton bikes, and chic rooftop terrace provide an elevated level of comfort, and the hotel’s dedicated Pathfinders advise on all things Jackson Hole — including cross-country ski fittings with Black Tie Ski Rentals and the best hiking trails for beginners. As far as dining options, the on-site restaurant The Bistro has European-inspired breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings, alongside an in-room dining menu.

The Wort Hotel: History is at the heart of The Wort Hotel , which first opened its doors in 1941. A staple in downtown Jackson, the 55-room property encompasses the idea of timeless hospitality. Upon entering the lobby, you’re greeted by a grand staircase, roaring fireplaces, and an assortment of Western art and photographs. The rooms are spacious and appropriately outfitted with Keurig coffee makers, cozy robes, and Western charm. Along with giving guests the ultimate welcome to Jackson Hole, The Wort Hotel is also home to the Silver Dollar Bar & Grill , where live music and swing dancing are weekly occurrences.

Hotel Terra: Claiming the title of “Wyoming’s first LEED Silver Certified hotel,” Hotel Terra leads the environment-first charge with its variety of sustainability initiatives. Behind the scenes, the property uses wind, solar, and hydro energy sources to help power the hotel. Guests will notice the refillable aluminum water bottles and organic toiletries provided in the rooms and suites, as well as the energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. The Teton Village location grants overnight guests easy access to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and the hotel also has a rooftop spa and infinity pool — perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking or e-biking. If you’re in the mood for Italian, make a reservation at the on-property restaurant Il Villaggio Osteria , known for its house-made pizza and pastas.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Grand Teton National Park: "Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole are home to the full spectrum of wildlife that existed pre-settlement. This region is the best place in the lower 48 to observe wild wolves, bears, and moose, to name a few of the iconic species that call this area home," says Phillips. Pro tip: You're more likely to see wildlife or experience lesser-known spots if you go with a guide. Both Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures and Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris offer tours year-round. If you plan on driving yourself, though, add Schwabacher Landing, Snake River overlook, Mormon Row, and Jenny Lake to your itinerary, the latter of which Gonzalez calls the "centerpiece of the park." "There are many options for guests to explore Jenny Lake, as several popular trails leave from the lake. Hikers can loop the lake, visit Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, or … relax and take a boat ride, hang by the shore, or stop by the Visitor Center," she adds.

Taylor Phillips, Jackson Hole Eco Tour Adventures

This region is the best place in the lower 48 to observe wild wolves, bears, and moose.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort: Think of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort as your base camp for all things adventure, whether you're skiing during the winter, hiking in the summer, or challenging yourself on the ropes course. A highlight of the resort, although only open from June to early October, is the Via Ferrata, which translates to translate to "iron way." A series of routes made up of cables secured to the rock, the Via Ferrata is an intense workout complete with remarkable views of the valley below. For something a little less strenuous, consider the resort's famous cherry red Aerial Tram. "Head to the top of Rendezvous Mountain in Teton Village via the Aerial Tram. Taking a hike at 10K feet to look for fossils in Cody Bowl with breathtaking views is an experience you won't forget," says Phillips.

Jackson Hole Rodeo: "No trip is complete without experiencing the Jackson Hole Rodeo ," says Gonzalez. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the rodeo "welcomes ropers, barrel racers, and bronco riders [to] showcase their Western skills," she explains. You can purchase tickets online (highly recommended, as some dates tend to sell out), and be sure to read up on what you can and can't bring with you to the historic downtown Jackson event.

Astoria Hot Springs: The beauty of Jackson Hole lies in the great outdoors and its variety of heart-pumping activities, but relaxation is equally important. Astoria Hot Springs , located 20 minutes south of downtown Jackson, is where you can slow down and allow your body to recover. Made up of five soaking pools filled with natural thermal waters — all controlled to different temperatures — the hot springs are open all year round. Make sure to bring sandals, a towel (although there are towels available to rent), and a bathing suit, and book your tickets ahead of time.

National Museum of Wildlife Art: Across the road from the National Elk Refuge sits the National Museum of Wildlife Art , a museum dedicated to showcasing the beauty of the outdoors. Over 550 artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and John James Audubon, are represented in the collection that boasts more than 5,000 items. The NMWA is open year-round, although there are often rotating exhibitions alongside the permanent collection.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Grand Teton National Park: Stunning peaks, thrilling wildlife, and lakeside fun
  • Jackson Hole Rodeo: A local tradition and taste of true cowboy culture
  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort: Skiing in winter, hiking in summer
  • Million Dollar Cowboy Bar: A staple with live music and swing dancing
  • Beaver Creek Hats & Leather: Family-owned shop with a huge hat selection

Beaver Creek Hats & Leather: You could spend an entire day browsing the art galleries, outdoor gear stores, and souvenir shops in Town Square, but there’s a good chance you’re looking to buy (or at least try on) a cowboy hat. Beaver Creek Hats & Leather is a family-owned and operated store with a seemingly endless number of hats, made in every style and variety of price points.

Lee’s Tees: Don’t leave Jackson Hole without one or two pieces of location-specific merch — whether it’s a t-shirt, bumper sticker, or baseball hat. It’s hard to miss Lee’s Tees , a 5,000-square-foot store in Town Square that sells all things Jackson Hole-related. If you forgot to pack an extra layer (even summer mornings and evenings are chilly), you can snag a sweatshirt or fleece at this Jackson icon, which was founded in 1978.

Mountain Dandy: You’ll find furniture, art, barware, and other home goods for sale at Mountain Dandy , a quaint boutique on West Pearl Ave. Its collection of handmade and vintage items is self-described as having a “masculine aesthetic,” and you’re almost guaranteed to spot something special to take home (whether it’s for yourself or for a loved one).

Bin22: “It wouldn't be a proper trip to Jackson Hole without picking up a Cream + Sugar ice cream sandwich and a bottle of bubbly to-go from Bin22 — also a great spot for Spanish tapas and exciting wines by the glass,” says Gonzalez. Cozy up at the bar for housemade mozzarella, meatballs, and a bottle of medium-bodied Italian red wine.

The Kitchen: The contemporary, flavorful offerings at The Kitchen — think seafood crudo, an Asian cabbage salad, and mushroom ramen — are a much-needed break from the heavier, red-meat dishes you’ll find throughout Jackson and Teton Village. When weather permits, you can enjoy your meal on the expansive outdoor deck, cocktail in hand.

Corsa: “Bold Italian fare in a beautiful new chalet-inspired setting” is how Corsa sets itself apart from the rest of Teton Village’s culinary concepts. While it’s the signature restaurant of Caldera House, lunch and dinner reservations are open to non-guests from Wednesday through Sunday. Start with one of the inventive, yet equally comforting, appetizers before moving on to funghi pizza or squid ink linguini.

Corbet’s Cabin: Corbet’s Cabin may fall under the “best restaurants” category, but it’s in a league all its own. Known for its “top of the world waffles,” Corbet’s sits atop Rendezvous Peak, 10,450 feet above sea level. Take the Aerial Tram up to the outpost, open from May to October and again during ski season, for a peanut butter and bacon waffle, or any of the other sweet and savory combinations.

Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse: Come hungry to the Million Dollar Cowboy Steakhouse , where choice cuts of meat, hearty entrees, and a delightful assortment of appetizers and sides populate the dinner menu. The culinary feats are just part of the overall experience, though. The restaurant’s walls provide a visual narrative of the history of the upstairs’s Million Dollar Cowboy Bar — and dining at the steakhouse also ensures free entry (just make sure you ask for a stamp).

Million Dollar Cowboy Bar: The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is a Jackson staple, with its roots dating back to 1937. Depending on the night, there’s usually live music and swing dancing — free lessons are offered every Thursday during the summer and winter — on the docket. Pool tables, saddle seats at the bar, and a variety of only-in-Jackson decor make it the place to be on a night out in Jackson. Be sure to follow the bar on Instagram for the most up-to-date news on shows, hours, and other exciting announcements.

Jackson Hole has two peak tourist seasons: winter and summer. From late November through early April, both downtown Jackson and Teton Village are hubs for skiers, snowboarders, and anyone looking to take advantage of the area’s annual snowfall. Summer, on the other hand, sees more visitors than the colder months — as it’s a popular time to visit both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone.

If you’re not interested in winter sports (and you want to avoid crowds) try the shoulder seasons. “The best time to visit Jackson Hole is mid-May to mid-June or mid-September to mid-October,” says Phillips. Jackson Hole is less crowded in the spring, and “wildlife viewing is at its best with newborn calves and fawns at their mother's side, and the Teton Mountains are still blanketed with snow,” he says. Early autumn, before snow poses a threat, is also perfect for travelers interested in seeing wildlife: “Crowds are thin, elk viewing with the rut in full swing is not to miss, bears are gorging on berries, and fall foliage is at its peak for the photographer,” he says.

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is the only commercial airport in the United States located within a national park, but it’s still just a quick 15-minute drive from downtown Jackson. The airport — which is served year-round by Delta, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines — underwent an extensive renovation in 2022. While it may be on the smaller side (only 11 gates), it’s still one of the most picturesque airports to fly in and out of; don’t miss its own set of decidedly Jackson antler arches, incredible views of the Teton Range, and mimosas upon arrival.

If you want to explore Grand Teton National Park and greater Jackson Hole, you’ll need to rent a car. Uber and Lyft are available, although sparingly, and there’s also the option to schedule a ride with a private cab company, like VIP Car Service . Public transportation options include START Bus , which is an affordable way to get from Jackson to Teton Village and vice versa. In the warmer months, you can use the START Bike rideshare to traverse Jackson and Teton County’s bike and pedestrian pathway network.

A First Timer’s Guide to Jackson Hole

Home » A First Timer’s Guide to Jackson Hole

If you’re coming to Wyoming on vacation, chances are you are making a trip to the insanely beautiful, Jackson . And now, I’m lucky enough to call this place home. With a good amount of time as a local under my belt, I can confidently recommend things you have to do on your first visit here.

1. Go horseback riding

A family riding horses through a creek in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Some of the best views can be seen from the back of a horse and you can do it in two hours or less. I recommend Trails Rides at the Spring Creek Stables . The views alone are a selling point and you’ll get enough pictures to have all your friends at home drooling.

2.  Ride the Tram

aerial tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

When friends and family roll into town, I take them on the Tram. The ride up provides amazing views of the village and valley. When you get to the top, treat yourself to a waffle because waffles taste better when you’re on top of the world.

3.  Hike the Taggart Lake trail

two girls walking down Taggart Lake Trail towards mountains

It’s a trail that doesn’t gain too much elevation and is just over 3 miles and will get you up close and personal with the Teton’s. Be sure to get to the trailhead early since the lot fills up pretty quickly.

4.Check out some live music

We might be a small town but we are mighty in the music department. Let me give you a few options. Monday nights you’ve got the Hootenanny at Dornan’s. Tuesday nights check out Bluegrass at The Wort . Throughout the summer you can check the schedule for Jackson Hole Live . And on Sunday’s head to the village for Concerts on the Commons .

5. Ride the Snake

Raft with rafters paddling through rapids in Jackson Wyoming

Get on the river. It’s one of the most common excursions you can do in Jackson during the summer. I work in the rafting industry and I can without a doubt say you gotta do it. You’ll have a blast. You might get a little wet but the memory will last long after your clothes dry.

6. Just eat everything

I might be biased because I live here but the food in this little town constantly surprises me. You can really have it all here. A few of my favorites are coffee at Persephone , breakfast at Cafe Genevieve, lunch at Lotus Cafe, dinner at Teton Thai or Local . Looking for a night cap? My top picks are Thai Me Up for their excellent brews, The Wort for a cocktail and music and finish the night off at the popular Million Dollar Cowboy for dancing that you can count as your daily exercise. After a night of moving and grooving, do yourself a favor and get a late night slice at Pinky G’s .

7. Yellowstone

Considered to the be the crown jewel around these parts, it’s a must do for a few reasons. But I don’t think I have to tell you that.

8. Treat yourself

I’m putting this on the list because around these parts there are plenty of ways to do this. If it’s the views you’re seeking, take some time to see them. Drive the Elk Refuge Road off of Broadway and put the car in park and soak it in. If it’s a spa day you’re after, we’ve got that too. A world class meal tickles your fancy? Perfect. Head up to Couloir. Looking to take a walk on the wild side? Go on a wildlife safari . If it’s serious adventure you’re after, book a trip with Exum Guides . They are consistently rated as some of the best in the world for good reason. Whatever kind of vacation you’re after, Jackson is the place to have it. I promise that long after you leave our little heaven, you’ll be haunted to come back and eventually, you’ll be passing through again. The mountains will keep calling so you should probably just listen and come on back.

FIRST TIMER’S GUIDE: A COMPLETE JACKSON HOLE ITINERARY FOR FALL (DOWNLOADS, MAPS & MORE!)

To be honest with you I had never really paid attention or even thought of visiting the town of Jackson, Wyoming until we planned out our Yellowstone/Grand Teton. Nor did I ever think I would be writing a Jackson Hole itinerary for you, but here I am.

Small town of Jackson, Wyoming

My husband was actually the one who requested spending a day in Jackson. To be honest, at first, I wasn’t stoked on the idea. I wanted this trip to be about RV life and hiking.  However, I am so glad we spent a day in Jackson.

With that being said I wanted to share our complete one day Jackson Hole itinerary with you! We packed a lot into one day!

HOW TO GET TO JACKSON, WYOMING

The easiest and most direct to getting to Jackson, Wyoming would be to fly into the Jackson Hole airport. You can rent a car from the airport or you can do an RV trip like we did!

Jackson, Wyoming is a small town located just outside the Grand Teton National Park and it is about 1.5 hours south of Yellowstone.

Interesting fact! People tend to call it Jackson Hole instead of just Jackson. The town is technically just Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is the greater valley of Teton County in Wyoming that includes the smaller ski towns Jackson, Teton Village, Wilson, the Aspens, Moran Junction, and Moose.

Elk Arches in Jackson

The town, Jackson, is located at the southern end of Jackson Hole.

The population here is around 10,000 people! How cute is that! Such a small town. Jackson is a popular tourist destination for those who visit Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons and for those who enjoy skiing.

WHERE TO EAT

A Jackson Hole itinerary is not complete without giving you recommendations on where to eat. The town of Jackson has tons of cute shops and restaurants to eat at. The recommendations below are based on where we eat during our time in Jackson, Wyoming.

We had coffee twice from Jackson Hole Roasters Coffee House . The first time was because we wanted to grab coffee to go and we actually spent a 2nd day in Jackson just working from our computers. We stopped by Cowboy Coffee to work, but they didn’t have any seating due to COVID, so we went back to our first place.

Originally, we began to wait in line to eat at The Bunnery Bakery and Restaurant . It opened at 8am and there was already a huge line. We were starving so we opted to head somewhere else even though this place looked delicious and cute!

We headed to Cafe Genevieve for breakfast. It was in a cute little old house and there was no line! It was still delicious, has 4 stars on Yelp and to be honest you really can’t go wrong with breakfast.

As we were working from Jackson Hole Roasters we noticed people eating breakfast there too and it looked delicious as well.

Who doesn’t love a healthy lunch? Make sure to check out the Healthy Being Cafe and Juicery for delicious salads and juices.

Lunch in Jackson, Wyoming

I recommend visiting Hand Fire Pizza . Who doesn’t love a delicious pizza after a long day? Hand Fire Pizza is located in an old movie theatre. It has the cutest vibe and you get to watch them make your pizza in a huge pizza oven.

ACTIVITIES AROUND JACKSON, WYOMING

Depending on what season you visit Jackson will help determine what kind of activities you can do. This Jackson Hole Itinerary is focused on activities that you can do in and around Jackson during the Fall Season.

Considering you are so close to two National Parks, I would highly recommend you do some hiking. The options are truly endless when it comes to hiking trails. If you are looking for a moderate hike that is about 4.5 miles long then check out the Phelps Lake trail.

There are two options to get to Phelps Lake. You can follow the All Trails route by starting at the Death Canyon Trailhead or you can follow this guide and start at the Rockefeller Preserve.

Jackson Hole itinerary

Looking for an extra fun adventure!? Make sure to jump off the giant rock at Phelps Lake!

Insider’s Tip! Do note that RVs longer than 23 feet are not allowed up the road to Phelps Lake. We had an RV that was 23 feet exactly and they would not allow us up this road. We ended up parking at the bottom of the road and hitchhiking our way up.

They would not allow us to walk up the road either due to lots of Bear and Moose activity.

RENT A BIKE

This is a great way to see the entire area of Jackson Hole. Start your adventure in the town of Jackson and rent an E-bike from E-bikes of Jackson Hole .

Make sure to grab a bike route map from them before you head out. There are tons of biking route options. We chose to do the Grand Loop trail which is about 18 miles long (this is easy on an e-bike). We started in Jackson, went to Teton Village and got lunch and then biked back to Jackson.

Complete guide to Jackson Hole

If you plan to do this route, plan for about 3.5 hours. It was a gorgeous ride, especially in the Fall.

It is $40 per bike for the first 2 hours and then each additional hour is $10.

GO TO A WINERY

Visit the Jackson Hole Winery for some delicious wine and beautiful views. This winery is located just outside the main square. It is a little too far to walk here from the square, so plan to drive.

trip in jackson wyoming

This was a last minute decision for us and we were lucky enough to snag a spot here, but if you plan to go here then I highly recommend making a reservation !

The town of Jackson is so cute! It has an old-town, western vibe. There are tons of options for shopping. You can plan to grab any souvenir items you may want here or just check out some of the amazing art galleries.

Things to do in Jackson

Make sure to walk through the main town square under their famous real Elk antler arches.

If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, they have farmer’s markets in the mornings during the Summer and the beginning of Fall.

WATCH A MOVIE

This one is a little insiders tip for you! Head to the Teton Gravity Research shop and walk to the back of the store. There is a small little movie theatre where they play some epic adventure videos.

The Teton Gravity Research is a film company that creates films about epic adventure sports. Watching these videos are pretty incredible and inspiring.

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM YOUR OUTDOOR LOVING GIRL

Jackson is probably one of the cutest towns I have ever visited and I highly recommend you plan to visit it! Even if you just have time to visit the main town square! Do you have a favorite small town? I would love to know in the comments!

Jackson Hole & Grand Teton N.P. Visitor Guide

19 things to do during a jackson hole summer.

A Jackson Hole summer really comes alive from June through early September, offering all manner of activities and adventures throughout the valley and in Grand Teton National Park. Push your limits, try out something new, or deepen an existing passion, all in the glorious outdoor playground we call home.

1. Climb the Tetons

Looking for some vertical adventure?  Making it to the top of a mountain is a major triumph and can be one of the highlights of your trip to Jackson Hole. Whether you want to make an epic ascent of the Grand Teton (you need to book this weeks or month in advance) or try your hand at climbing for the first time, Jackson Hole’s various outfitters, Exum Guides or Jackson Hole Mountain Guides have you covered with the right gear, guide services and expert instruction. Exum has a fun family and kids climbing class. In addition, experienced day climbers will enjoy local hot spots such as Blacktail Butte and the Rodeo Wall. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort's climbing attraction, Via Ferrata , garners raves from locals, so consider this assisted climbing option whether you're a novice or a more seasoned climber.

2. Mountain Bike

Over the past decade, Jackson Hole has emerged as a world-class mountain biking destination.  The area’s abundance of trails and bike shops makes it easy for bikers of all abilities to get off the pavement.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort  and Grand Targhee   offer lift-accessed mountain biking all summer, while the world-famous Teton Pass trails, with their massive jumps and wild features, will get even the most seasoned mountain biker’s heart rate up. In the town of Jackson, Snow King Mountain's network of cross-country bike trails winds through a series of sunny aspen groves as it crisscrosses the ski hill and stretches into nearby Cache Creek.  Serious adrenaline junkies need go only a few miles west to get their fix.

For those looking for a mellower ride, check out Jackson's popular Pathways .  These paved bike trails not only run between Jackson, Wilson and Teton Village, but continue into the stunning heart of Grand Teton National Park. Teton Mountain Bike Tours offers guided rides for all abilities.

3. Go Western

No trip to the Cowboy State would be complete without some old-fashioned, Western good times.  Jackson Hole is, after all, “the last of the Old West,” so connect to the spirit, forge your own frontier memories and indulge your inner cowboy .

Trail Rides: Few activities offer as much insight into the traditions and textures of the West as horseback riding . Stables are located throughout the valley, and each offer rides to accommodate any schedule, from an hour to a full day.  These full-service dude ranches also offer guides, camping equipment and provisions for multi-day pack trips.

Stagecoach Rides: Hop aboard a bonafide stagecoach for a 10-minute ride around town, with two handsome, yoked horses leading the way.

Jackson Hole Shootout: From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day each year, the streets are cleared at 6 p.m. (except Sundays) to accommodate the Jackson Hole Shoot-out Gang. With characters as dastardly or virtuous as you’ll find in any tumbleweed saloon, the gang puts on a show that culminates with an authentic shoot-out, the longest-running of its kind in the country.

4. Take a Hike

Hiking in Jackson Hole runs the gamut from river walks to boulder scrambles to mountain panoramas and getting high—like thousands of feet high. Everyone has their own definition of a day hike , and Jackson Hole offers abundant options.  Near the town of Jackson, the Goodwin Lake, Cache Creek and Jackson Peak hikes in the Bridger-Teton National Forest are popular, low-stress options.  In Grand Teton National Park , the Bradley and Taggart lakes hikes are pleasant loops around serene mountain lakes at the foot of the Tetons.  Further into the park, hikers can make the trek up to the Phelps Lake overlook and Death Canyon trail for impressive views.  Check in with park rangers, visitor centers , or the local Valley Bookstore on the Town Square for recommendations and trail guides. The Hole Hiking Experience offers guided trips or go with Jackson Hole Mountain Guides to hike and scramble to a Teton summit in a day!

5. Get In (or On) the Water

If you’ve had enough of terra firma, head out onto one of Jackson Hole’s many waterways.  From whitewater rafting to paddleboarding to scenic floats trips and canoeing , the Jackson Hole area has no equal when it comes to combining beauty with water adventure.  The Tetons’ placid lakes offer many options for integrating a paddle or float with wildlife viewing, and the Snake River flowing into and out of Jackson is the prime choice for drift boat fishing.  Eighteen miles south of town, the Snake River Canyon promises soaks and thrills for those seeking high-intensity whitewater adventure.

Feel free to jump into the many lakes, streams and rivers that dot the valley, as well as the swimming pond at Rendezvous Park (R Park) in Wilson. For an extra special experience, head to Astoria Hot Springs Park, only 20 minutes from Jackson on the banks of the Snake River, which features 5 soaking pools, including a dedicated pool for kids (reservations only; $18 adults, $14 kids 2-12, free for infants to 24 months). Or venture out to the rustic and relaxing Granite Hot Springs pool, just 30 minutes south of town ($8 adults; $5 children)

6. Get Up High

Learn the ropes. Both Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King offer ropes course adventures. Aerial challenges include riding ziplines and walking over moving wooden pieces, wires, and balance beams.

Gondola to Happy Hour. Catch the Bridger Gondola at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort for $16 starting at 5 p.m. every day and enjoy Happy Hour and stunning views at The Deck.

Take an Aerial Tram ride. Also known as "Big Red," the tram takes passengers 4,139 vertical feet from the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to the 10,450-foot summit of Rendezvous Mountain.

Climb 2,000 feet. Get an aerial view of Grand Targhee (which lies roughly half an hour from Jackson via Teton Pass out of Wilson) and enjoy a 360-degree view that will take your breath away. Catch a ride on the Dreamcatcher chairlift to the peak of Fred’s Mountain. Make sure to check out the summit hiking trail or the scenic overlook where you’ll come face to face with the highest peaks in the Teton range.

View the whole of the Hole. A scenic trip to the top of Snow King Mountain on the resort's 8-person gondola allows you nearly unbeatable, 360-degree views of the Tetons and the town of Jackson.

7. Go Camping

Whether you’re a hardcore backpacker or laid-back car camper, Jackson Hole is a premium spot for getting into the woods.  You can pitch your tent at a Park Service - or Forest Service -maintained site or venture farther afield. There are several RV parks near Jackson Hole offering easy access to Grand Teton National Park, complete with spectacular views. On the other hand, a backpacking trip to Paintbrush Canyon or along the Teton Crest Trail will challenge even the most wizened backcountry experts.  Keep in mind that permits and restrictions are in place for backpacking campsites in the national parks and certain other areas.  You can rent gear at Teton Mountaineering or Skinny Skis , or try and score a sweet deal at Headwall Recycle Sports .

8. Paraglide

Does the idea of running off of a mountain, taking flight like a bird, and soaring between the Tetons’ peaks appeal to you? [ Watch Video ] If so, look no further than one of Jackson’s Hole’s paragliding services . Paragliding is a safe, once-in-a-lifetime experience that will give you a whole new perspective on the Jackson Hole landscape. Flyers strap into a tandem paraglider with an experienced pilot who will navigate you over 3,200 feet back to the valley floor.

9. Fly Fish

One of the quintessential activities to do in Jackson Hole is fly fishing with the impressive Teton Range as a backdrop. The Snake River and its tributaries are known as world-class fisheries.  From the upper reaches of the Gros Ventre River, through the braided Grand Teton National Park section of the Snake, to the lumbering stretches of the South Fork and Salt rivers, anglers find more trout than there are flies with which to catch them. Whether by boat or bank, morning or afternoon, an army of outfitters and guides is ready to reveal the secrets of the wily cutthroat trout and others inhabiting the waters of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

10. Learn About the Lore of Jackson Hole

Like ghostly brands on the wilderness, traces remain of the valley’s original homesteaders. For a glimpse of the structures they built to shelter from the elements, drive out to Mormon Row near Kelly. There you can also see the iconic Moulton Barn, one of the most photographed structures in all of Jackson Hole.

Menor’s Ferry Historic District is located half a mile from Grand Teton National Park’s Moose entrance. For many years the ferry was the only dry way for people to get across the Snake River. Park rangers offer daily, free rides on a replica ferry, as well as a tour of the district, which includes settler Bill Menor's 1894 cabin and general store. Near Menor’s Ferry is the Chapel of the Transfiguration, which was built in 1925. It has been—and still is—the site of many a Teton wedding.

The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum hosts free walking tours around downtown Jackson in the summertime and brings Jackson Hole’s multi-faceted history to life through a collection of diverse exhibits in the society's brand-new building on Broadway, off Town Square.

The Murie Center is located on the historic Murie Ranch in Moose and was once the heart and soul of the early conservation movement. At 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, you can take a 30-minute, docent-led tour of the home of late environmental stewards Mardy and Olaus Murie.

The White Grass Ranch . This former dude ranch on Death Canyon Road is now home to the Western Center for Historic Preservation, an educational and resource center dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of cultural resources in our Western national parks.

11. View Wildlife

Want to feel like you're walking around the set of an Animal Planet  special? Perfect.

12. Stargaze at a Summit Observatory

Seated on the crest of the ridge atop Snow King Mountain, the brand new Snow King Observatory is state of the art with a large (one meter) Plane Wave telescope available for public observation day or night via on-site staff. The telescope rests on a 20-foot concrete pier anchored in the earth and isolated from the greater structure to prevent vibrations from disrupting its position. The 4,400-square-foot observatory features a 35-seat planetarium space theater and a 40-seat auditorium for group presentations and learning opportunities. Adjacent to the 24-foot dome is a rooftop observation deck where portable telescopes can be set up for additional viewing during astronomical events. The observatory can be accessed by the Snow King Gondola, or if you’d prefer to hike some trails go up 1,600 feet to the summit.

Cost and hours TBA.

13. Play Golf

Add an extra 25 yards to your tee shot on one of Jackson’s world-class courses.  At this high altitude, your drives go farther-but don’t expect your scores to get any lower!  Teton Pines Resort & Country Club has been recognized as one of the 75 best courses in the country by Golf Digest and Conde Nast Traveler.   This facility is open to the public, though tee times are required.

14. Take a Scenic Drive

Be a "Sunday driver" any day! While oohing and aahing is simply the name of the game out here, we've curated a few of the really jaw-dropping scenic drives around Jackson Hole.

• Moose Wilson Road. Wildlife spotting is a given on this narrow and winding, 8-mile road that runs between the Grand Teton National park entrance just outside of Teton Village to Moose.

• Inner Park Loop Road. Travel for 20 unforgettable miles through Grand Teton National Park underneath the watchful eyes of the towering Tetons.

• Jenny Lake Scenic Loop. This one-way, three-mile road off the main park roadway is a less traveled gem.

• Kelly Loop. The Kelly herd of bison comes out and plays in force just before sunset on this 16-mile loop that starts and ends at Gros Ventre Junction. Other sights include Mormon Row, Mouton Barn and Shadow Mountain.

• Teton Pass. This high mountain pass starts in Wilson and connects the valleys of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Teton Valley, Idaho.

• Snake River Canyon. Perhaps one of the most gorgeous mountain canyon roads in the country! The Snake River hugs one side of the canyon and steep hills and mountains are on both sides. The Canyon road connects Jackson with Alpine, Wyoming, where the Snake and Grey's rivers intersect with the Palisade's Reservoir.

15. Sit a Spell in a Saloon

Plan to visit one of our iconic watering holes, rife with the history of the West and steeped in cowboy tradition. You can straddle a saddle at the bar of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and listen to live music while fellow patrons two-step and boot-scoot across the dance floor. Just around the corner from the Cowboy Bar, in the historical Wort Hotel, you can see the more than 4,000 1921 uncirculated Morgan silver dollars embedded in the bar of the aptly named Silver Dollar Bar . The Silver Dollar Showroom offers live music and a distinctly Western vibe nightly. The newly-remodeled Virginan Saloon in the Virginian Lodge is a classic Jackson Hole favorite location to hear local bands and mingle with honest-to-goodness cowboys. And no trip to Jackson Hole would be complete without attending “Sunday Church” at the Stagecoach Bar in Wilson where you can dance with a cowboy or cowgirl if you so choose as the famous Stagecoach Band plays on through the night.

16. Admire Amazing Art

Within the past decade, Jackson Hole has taken its place beside Scottsdale, Santa Fe, San Francisco and New York as a major destination for art lovers, becoming known as the Art Center of the Rockies. The National Center for Arts Research has ranked Jackson the most vibrant arts community among U.S. populations smaller than 1 million.

Nearly 30 local galleries—including the renowned National Museum of Wildlife Art —proudly present a broad range of work, from old masters like Charles Russell and Frederic Remington to nationally and internationally known contemporary artists, some of whom live right here in Teton County. The Center for the Arts , in downtown Jackson, also hosts art exhibitions in its lobby.

Art aficionados flock here by the hundreds every September for the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival , widely recognized as one of the premier cultural events in the West, featuring works of acclaimed artists worldwide. Both the National Museum of Wildlife Art and Grand Teton National Park hold plein air festivals each summer.

The Art Association of Jackson Hole ’s outdoor art fairs features local and national artists, demos, food, live music and more. This year's fairs will be held July 26th to 28th and August 16th through 18th on the grand lawn at the Center For the Arts, located just a few blocks from Town Square.

17. See a Stunning Sunset

When the sun sets in the Tetons, it’s a take-your-breath-away experience. Here are some of our favorite spots for watching the sun sink beneath the horizon and behind the dramatic Teton Range.

Curtis Canyon Overlook. Located close to the town of Jackson and reachable via the National Elk Refuge Road, this gem of a sunset viewing spot is part the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Mormon Row. The Mormon Row Historic District is home to the Moulton Barn, the most photographed barn in Wyoming. Sunsets there can include bison from the Kelly herd, and only add to the jaw-dropping scenery. Drive north from Jackson on Hwy 191 past Moose Junction and turn right onto Antelope Flats Road.

Dornan’s. Whether you’re inside Dornan’s Pizza, Pasta Company or sitting on its upstairs deck, or enjoying a chuck wagon meal on a picnic table, you’ll have a front-row seat to watch the sun’s final hurrah of the day.

Jenny Lake and the top of Signal Mountain in Grand Teton National Park are two other places to see a memorable sunset.

Save $2 Off Admission

Jackson Hole Playhouse —Jackson Hole's only dinner theater—presents family-friendly musicals during winter and summer. The 2024 summer musical is the Western-themed "Oklahoma!" It opens on May 31st and performances are Monday through Saturday. For tickets and more information, visit jhplayhouse.com .

19. Check Out the Nearby Towns

While Jackson offers a myriad of adventures, it can be very crowded during the summer season, resulting in long lines for restaurants, limited (or frustrating to find) parking spots both in town and in Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks and even discovering more popular hiking trails jam-packed with other hikers. Pack your patience.

So on that note, we recommend taking a half-or full-day excursion to the “bedroom” communities of Jackson — Alpine (Wyoming)  and Victor and Driggs, Idaho. All are slower-paced and less expensive alternatives to Jackson.

Alpine is a relatively short jaunt from Town Square. Twenty-odd minutes of the drive is through the amazingly beautiful Snake River Canyon where you’ll see the mighty river on one side of the highway and towering hills and mountains on the other. Beer aficionados must make a stop at Melvin Brewing which sits on the Palisades and offers up award-winning craft beers, as well as snack, lunch and dinner items. You can also recreate on the Palisades Reservoir.

Victor and Driggs, Idaho, situated via Teton Pass on the other side of the Teton Range, are slower-paced and less expensive alternatives to Jackson. With a slew of eateries, several breweries, Grand Teton Distillery , golf courses, mountain biking and the popular “Music on Main” outdoor concert series in Victor offered on Thursday evenings during the summer, you will certainly delight in this side trip. The drive is approximately half an hour from Jackson.

Bonus Things To Do

The Teton Raptor Center Avian Experience Program offers you a 45-minute opportunity to meet various birds of prey (think eagles, hawks, owls) in its newly-remodeled historic barn every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the center in Wilson. Book online at tetonraptorcenter.org.

You can also learn about and mingle with these fascinating birds for free every Tuesday and Wednesday in Teton Village (at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort) during the Alive@5 series held from June through August.

Take in Town Square by spending the day and the night in and around this iconic location.

Tips to Prepare for Your Tour

Before you head off on a Yellowstone adventure, make sure you’re all prepped up. Here’s what you need to know:

  • What to pack:  Be sure to pack for the weather, including layers, comfortable walking shoes, and rain gear. Outside of summer, it is pretty cold for most of the year.
  • Best time to visit:  The best time to visit is May through September, when the weather is mild, and the park is actually open.
  • Wildlife safety:  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PET THE ANIMALS! I’m not kidding; people every year get killed by buffalo. They are not pets. If they are in your way, go around.
  • Geothermal Safety:  DON’T POKE OR STEP ON THE GEOTHERMAL FLOORS! Yes, even if the wind blows your hat off the boardwalk. Aside from destroying the formation, you might literally fall in and get burned.

A Bit About Yellowstone National Park

Did you know that Yellowstone National Park is the  oldest national park in the United States ? Established in 1972, it spans 3,472 square miles of Wyoming wilderness, making it among the largest of the federal park system.

The drive from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone is a scenic one. Be prepared for winding roads and possible delays due to herds of buffalo on the road, construction, or accidents. Many roads may be closed in the wintertime.

Many visitors to the area are often torn between which park to spend more time at, but, in my opinion, Yellowstone is way better. As subjective as I’m trying to be as Grand Teton does have an impressive mountain range and alpine lakes, Yellowstone’s geothermal and canyon sceneries are just so unique, I think every traveler to America should visit this park.

Lydgate Farms in Kaua'i, viewed from water, showing jagged hills

Our writers have taken their families to New Mexico, New York, and Kaua’i this year.

Travel changes when you have kids, but it doesn’t have to end; you just need to factor in a few more needs and opinions than before. Thankfully, the United States is packed full of must-visit destinations for the whole family, where parents and children alike can have a great time. I’ve personally enjoyed roaming southern California with my brood, exploring forests, sea caves, and snowy mountains in Sequoia National Park, La Jolla, and Big Bear, respectively.

We asked a bunch of our contributors who wrangle children as well as words for their family travel memories across the country—and their recommendations for 2024 and beyond. Your next family adventure starts here.

Two parents with two kids in front of Niagara Falls (L); the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (R)

Kids will remember the watery spray of Niagara Falls and the contours of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York State.

Buffalo, New York

My husband’s family lives in Buffalo, New York, and I’ve been visiting the city annually for more than two decades. But I’ve only learned how kid-friendly it is in the past few years. Our two-year-old son, Julian, loves romping around the seven interactive play zones—including a pretend car wash and a splashy water exhibit inspired by the Erie Canal—at the sprawling Explore & More Children’s Museum . We ride the whimsical, hand-painted ostriches and giraffes on the Buffalo Heritage Carousel , a century-old merry-go-round now fully powered by the sun; twirl among the painted branch sculptures at the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center ; and sample new foods at the recently expanded West Side Bazaar , a nonprofit food hall that highlights cuisine from Egypt, Myanmar, Congo, and beyond. While Julian is too young to appreciate Buffalo’s iconic architecture (including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House ), we love building our own towers in the LEGO-centric Creative Commons lab at the newly reopened Buffalo AKG Art Museum . Then, of course, there’s Niagara freakin’ Falls—it will leave you so utterly gobsmacked, silencing even the fiercest toddler tantrum.

Where to stay

The 88-room Richardson Hotel inhabits the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane on the landmarked Richardson Olmsted Campus , designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (of Central Park fame). Its spacious suites have vaulted ceilings and enormous windows, but it’s the colorful tiles in the mile-long hallways that form the ultimate toddler runway. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor

Washington’s Olympic Peninsula

The Twilight novels shined a spotlight on the small town of Forks, Washington , depicting its gloomy climate and casting it as the ideal hiding spot for sun-fearing vampires. What the books failed to capture, however, is the sublime beauty found nestled among the rainforests, waterfalls, and hot springs of the enchanting Olympic Peninsula.

As a preschooler, my son delighted in splashing in the ocean as it lapped against the craggy coastline, and later, as a burgeoning hiker, he tested his limits while clambering over felled Douglas fir trees to earn a coveted Junior Ranger badge . The Pacific Northwest keeps bringing my family back for new adventures, and with nearby Mount Rainer joining the ever-growing list of popular national parks instituting a reservation system in 2024, Olympic remains blissfully open to explorers of all ages—even those adverse to advance planning.

Calling us to visit this year is the Tree of Life , a seemingly magical tree that suspends itself in midair. With the ground beneath it having eroded, the tree’s roots are now exposed, leaving no soil to keep it secure. It’s only a matter of time before the Tree of Life comes tumbling down, and we’re hoping to catch sight of this magnificent phenomenon before it’s gone—and perhaps snap a photo with the “Welcome to Forks” sign on our way through town.

Camp alongside towering Sitka spruce at one of several national park campgrounds , or nestle into comfier digs at the scenic Lake Crescent Lodge . Or, for those seeking upscale accommodations with a rustic chic design, try Olympic Lodge by Ayres , located in the charming town of Port Angeles . — Amanda Adler

Sante Fe offers indoor and outdoor fun—and the famous Meow Wolf immersive art space.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

This New Mexican city can make you feel as if you’ve traveled abroad without the need for a passport, thanks to a strong Indigenous history and connection with Mexico. Explore indoor and outdoor attractions like Bandelier National Park , which contains preserved ancestral pueblo dwellings; the Museum of International Folk Art , which includes the Tree of Life play area; the small Georgia O’Keefe Museum ; the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market ; and the Santa Fe Reptile & Bug Museum , which has a new location housing live animals and natural history exhibits.

When we visited Santa Fe, our whole family had a blast exploring the incredible interactive installation that is Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return , a massive and ever-changing adventure inside an old bowling alley. Be sure to also book a ride on the Sky Railway , which offers themed rides on two fantastically painted trains that make their way between Santa Fe and Lamy as riders enjoy entertainers, music, storytelling, and more. Kid-friendly dining includes the Shed for traditional New Mexican dishes like burritos, enchiladas, and tamales. We also loved breakfast at Dolina Café & Bakery , which has New Mexican breakfast burritos as well Eastern European baked goods. For a treat, stop by Kakawa Chocolate House for chocolate truffles, ice cream, or hot chocolate.

The Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado recently completed a multimillion-dollar revitalization of its spacious 65 casitas, which can be stocked with baby gear and child-size robes and slippers on request. If you want to be right on the plaza in the heart of downtown, book a room at the historic La Fonda on the Plaza , which has a heated pool and a variety of rooms, some with sleeper sofas. Ask for the scavenger hunt booklet at check-in to keep kids busy. — Devorah Lev-Tov

Columbus, Ohio

As our plane touched down in Columbus from Tampa in Fall 2023, my then six year old told his sister they’d be welcomed on the ground with flower necklaces called leis . He’d somehow mistaken Ohio for O‘ahu when I told him we were going on a fall trip. But Columbus delivered so deeply on family fun that there was never a regret. In the Franklinton Arts District we hit the community festival called Franklinton Fridays (held two Fridays a month). And along the Scioto River nearby, the COSI (Center of Science and Industry) Museum had a Barbie exhibit in addition to all its hands-on science fun. From now through early September, there’s a Titanic exhibition with full-scale room re-creations from the ocean liner. In Columbus’s vibrant Short North Arts District, where the fall leaves were piled in a manner no Florida kid could resist, we devoured macaroons at a bakery and made bracelets at pop-up project Tenspace , where the interactive offerings are always changing.

We food hall–hopped, too, from the city’s 150-year-old public market, North Market , where we sampled Somali cuisine and Himalayan dumplings, to Budd Dairy Hall , where we played foosball while digging into pizza and cheesesteaks. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and its more than 10,000 animals might have to wait for our return visit. But at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens , blue morphos landed on our heads in the butterfly garden, and a nature playground beckoned in the crisp fall air outside. Streets lined with beautiful homes in German Village lured us later, with the 32 warrenlike rooms of the Book Loft and Schiller Park, with its pond stocked with rainbow trout and yet another great playground.

The Junto sits right across the street from the Scioto Riverwalk and COSI Museum and sometimes offers themed rooms reflecting visiting exhibits. (We stayed in a temporarily Barbie-themed suite during our visit, at the height of the hype.) The hotel’s cozy lobby has open fireplaces and board games you can play at big tables within a few steps of beverages for adults at the Trade Room lobby bar. And the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Brass Eye , does a great brunch with river views. — Terry Ward

Denver is an essential stop for family fun in all seasons.

Denver, Colorado

Marrying the best of a thriving city with spectacular natural beauty, Denver is a pedestrian-friendly metropolis that’s a blast with kids and, I’ve found, especially fun for an active family. On a recent trip we enjoyed visual stimulation and storytelling during a two-hour walk through RiNo street art with Denver Graffiti Tour , and our toddler found the immersive spaces of the weird and wonderful psychedelic art experience Meow Wolf thrilling and tactile. The city’s excellent museums—including the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science —capture the attention and imagination of all ages, while outdoors enthusiasts have a slew of options for hiking, such as Red Rocks (the amphitheater is the legendary home of concerts but also summer movie nights) and quaint Golden, where we enjoyed strolling with our then-baby.

Summer 2024 in Denver includes such events as the Tennyson Street Fair (July 20) and Denver Burger Battle (August 1) while this June 1 to 2 sees the inaugural Outside Festival at Civic Center Park with a family-friendly lineup of music, adventure, wellness, film, and kids activities and programming. Additionally, the country’s first carbon-positive hotel—with sustainable design and construction by Studio Gang— Populus at Civic Center Park is set for a summer debut. As appealing as the warmer months are, our favorite time to visit is winter, when it’s an alluring place to acclimate to higher altitudes and enjoy a vibrant city before heading off to mountains like Breckenridge or Vail for snowboarding.

Four Seasons is the gold standard for optimizing the hotel experience for babies, and the Four Seasons Hotel Denver is no exception, offering families traveling with youngsters miniature robes, no-tears toiletries, gear such as small bathtubs and diaper pails and, for our then 10-month-old, a welcome snack of freshly made applesauce. For older kids, the Curtis Denver – a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and its hyper-themed rooms—think Barbie, Comic Book Heroes, and Ghostbusters—are a must. — Kathryn Romeyn

Jackson, Wyoming

It’s impossible to say whether the national park gateway and Wild West town of Jackson (known to many as Jackson Hole: the name of the valley and the ski resort) is more captivating in snowy or warm months. Both are gorgeously sunny and blue-skied, ripe with experiences active and peaceful. My family’s recent trip was into a winter wonderland: My two-year-old began giddily learning to ski, all of us soaked in steamy springs at Astoria Hot Springs Park , and we spotted bighorn sheep, fox, and moose on a spectacular snow-blanketed safari with locally owned Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures . Dogsledding with Call of the WYld ‘s adorable huskies was one of the most entertaining activities we’ve ever done together and cemented Jackson, for me, as a place to make indelible memories as a family.

When the snow is gone, there’s plenty of amusement in the form of fishing and floating on the Snake River, hiking, tram and gondola rides, and the rodeo. In the warmer months, there’s always something lively happening, whether it’s the Grand Teton Music Festival or the Snow King Summer Concert Series. In June, the Snow King Observatory and Planetarium open to the public with a 24-foot AstroHaven dome, a state-of-the-art one-meter PlaneWave telescope, plus interactive galleries that should entice the space-obsessed no matter their age.

From the decor—see giant video screens at the end of each hallway playing striking wildlife videos—to the pool and large hot tub plus gratis snack and hot chocolate stations, the Cloudveil, Autograph Collection Hotels , appeals to kids and kids at heart with a luxe twist. Just off the town square, family-owned Hotel Jackson is rustic meets plush with a Lebanese restaurant downstairs and a steaming hot tub a few floors up. — Kathryn Romeyn

A trip to Kaua‘i will foster a love for the environment in kids.

Kaua‘i, Hawaiʻi

With incredible hikes, marine life, and chocolate tours, lush Kaua‘i (it’s not called the Garden Isle for nothing) is a veritable playground for families. My crew learned all about how cacao is grown, harvested, and processed, and sampled all manner of deliciousness (macadamia nuts, apple bananas, lychee, spiky rambutan, cacao nibs, truffles!) during a three-hour tour at Lydgate Farms , which has won some major awards for its locally grown, sustainable chocolate. For snorkeling, join sailing excursions with Holo Holo Charters , which monitors areas where reef fish and green sea turtles are active. The grand finale of our island time? Taking to the sky (and even managing to catch a double rainbow) with Island Helicopters for a 50-minute ride over the dramatic Nāpali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and rainforests.

Try oceanfront Timbers Kaua‘i , part of the 450-acre Hōkūala resort, along the island’s southeast coastline. Boasting gorgeous multi-bedroom digs, an on-site farm (from which pineapples and papayas are delivered to rooms), a spa (a Lomi Lomi massage is a must), a restaurant, and a stunning infinity pool, the property is pure bliss. — Tanvi Chheda

Lake County, Northern California

I live in Northern California’s Bay Area, meaning my husband and I and our two kids (ages five and seven) spend a lot of time in Sonoma and Napa Valley . But we recently discovered a lesser-known spot just north of the iconic wine regions with fewer crowds, but plenty of scenic rolling hills, lakes, hiking trails, and vineyards. On a recent visit to Lake County, we went to Six Sigma Ranch and Winery , where families can book a tour of the mountainous property in an all-terrain Pinzgauer (a hefty military vehicle the kids loved bumping around in). After, our little ones fed pigs and goats at the ranch, and then we noshed on cheese and charcuterie plates while the adults sipped tempranillo and sauvignon blanc.

There’s plenty more to do. At Anderson Marsh State Historic Park , wander through the 19th-century ranch house and barn before heading out on a nature walk through beautiful marshlands full of birds and frogs. Head to Clear Lake State Park on the shores of California’s largest freshwater lake for access to a swimming beach and more hiking trails. On the way to or from Lake County from the San Francisco area, you can take a detour toward Safari West , an African safari experience on a 400-acre private preserve where the kids can be on the lookout for giraffes, rhinos, wildebeest, and zebras. Fuel up at Oxbow Market or Gott’s Roadside on the way.

The main draw in Lake County for families is Huttopia Wine Country , a glamping concept opened by a French family in 2023. With a veritable summer camp vibe, Huttopia features 93 solar-powered wood and canvas tents with an outdoor kitchenette and barbecue grill. Many also have en suite bathrooms with showers (otherwise, it’s a shared bathroom setup). There’s a swimming pool, a main lodge with dining, concessions, games (like Ping-Pong and foosball), and activities (like arts and crafts for kids and movies under the stars). We loved that there was a playground, and you can rent electric mountain bikes. Your kids will inevitably team up with newfound friends for nature exploring. — Michelle Baran, deputy editor, news

If there's only one particular night you can attend the rodeo, I'd book it a couple of weeks ahead. If you're also constrained on what day or time you can do the float, I'd book it at least 2 weeks ahead.

Thanks for asking this! We are looking for the same info.
