How Trip Planner works

What should I do to plan my trip?

Get started with our Trip Planner in one of two easy ways:

1. Sign into your account, search for places to stay or things to do, and tap the heart icon on the image of a listing that you want to save. You'll be asked to create a new trip by giving it a name and saving it to your trip planner.

2. Head to the Expedia homepage, click on Trips in the top right corner (on desktop) or in the bottom menu bar (in the app), and then select "Create a trip".

How do I create a trip plan?

Once you've signed into your account and created your trip, you can save accommodations and activities to your trip. Soon you will also be able to save your preferred flights in our Trip Planner.

Why is trip planning important?

Saving items in a travel planner online helps you stay organized by keeping all your favorite stays and activities saved in one place. Instead of switching between multiple browser tabs, just open our Trip Planner.

When you're ready to book, it's easy to compare options , see all your locations on a map, and book directly from your saved items.

When should you start planning a trip?

Where can I find my booked items?

When you plan a trip online with us, you can keep your booked and saved items all in one place, making it easier to manage and build your trip.

Can I move a booked or saved item to a different trip?

Yes, we've made it easy to move items, because we know that planning your trip can mean adding more places to see or splitting favorite destinations up into multiple trips.

First, select the trip that already has the items you want to move. For booked items, tap the three dots on the top right corner of the item and select "move to another trip". For saved items, follow the same process and select "save to another trip" instead.

How can my friends and family help me plan a trip online?

Friends and family invited to collaborate on a trip with you will be able to view, save, and book items in your trip planner itinerary. All they need to do to start collaborating is accept the trip invite sent to their email.

Always wanted to travel across US but were not sure if you have enough time for that? Did you ever try to figure out how long it takes to drive from Yosemite to Yellowstone or from Lisbon to Rome?

• For instance, if you’ve searched for “Golden Gate Bridge,” there will be a white box that offers some information on the location, and even a rating from other users. Click on the “Add to map” button to send it to your saved locations.

• For example, you might fill in the description to the “Golden Gate Bridge” box with something like, “Spend at least 1 hour here—must-see location.”

• You might consider changing the colors of your pins to match how important each location is to your trip. For example, must-see locations could be red pins, your housing spots could be green pins, and optional places to visit could remain as blue pins.

Creating an Itinerary and Planning Routes

• For example, you might have a layer titled “Places to see,” one titled “Places to eat,” and one titled “Places to sleep.” You can then put sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and hotels you want to stay at in their respective layers.

With many people out and about for summer vacation, professionals are recommending some tips and tricks when traveling on the road.

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. — With many people out and about for summer vacation, professionals are recommending some tips and tricks when traveling on the road.

"Everybody’s ready to get out of town and go on trips,” Uniglobe travel agent Jenna Bickford said. “Go on vacation."

While airports may be busy, so are the highways.

Triple-A East Central spokesperson Tiffany Stanley said while June is a very busy month, the Fourth of July holiday will bring out even more drivers on the road, with many traveling 50 miles or more.

"We are expecting about 60.3 million Americans to be traveling by car and that is a 5% increase from last year,” Stanley said.

Bickford said they've been extremely busy compared to what they usually see, with people booking trips that require road or air travel.

"Myrtle Beach is popular,” Bickford said. “We love trips to Put-in-Bay, that’s a travelable distance, even New York.

"I think because more people are booking last minute, we have been so busy lately, which is great. Phones are ringing off the hook and people are excited to go again, which makes us excited, too.”

When it comes to heading out with your family or friends, whether it’s by bus or car, Stanley says plan ahead. This includes getting your car inspected, especially if you’re traveling far, follow road rules, and have a special kit for safety reasons.

"Make sure you pack an emergency road service kit,” Stanley said. “We really don’t want you to be stuck on the side of the road. If you are, it may help that you have that emergency road service kit, and it could help you get out of a sticky situation.”

This includes jumper cables and a first aid kit. Overall, they recommend giving yourself enough time and being patient as there will be a delay or traffic stop no matter the destination.

"Getting to a destination if you’re driving, build yourself enough time, make that a part of your vacation,” Bickford said. “Don’t stress yourself out by causing yourself delays or causing yourself panic. Plan for anything that could go wrong and it’s going to make your trip a lot smoother."

More than 80 million Americans go camping each year, making it one of the most popular ways people in the United States choose to spend time outdoors. Camping can be a lot of fun—you’re often surrounded by nature and people you love, plus you get a break from day-to-day life.

Camping takes you out of your “normal” and puts you in a new place, where you can explore, relax, exercise, and socialize outdoors. The connections you form while camping—connections with others, with nature, and with your inner self—make it even more valuable as a form of outdoor recreation.

As any happy camper will tell you, though, camping is also a lot of work. It’s not the easiest hobby to get started with, because there’s a lot of gear involved. If you’re new to this game and need some help planning for your first (or your next) camping trip, you’ve come to the right place.

The key to a successful camping trip is preparation. While there’s always a little bit of “winging it” involved in camping, if you don’t have the camping essentials, you probably won’t have much fun.

So you’re ready to plan a camping trip in the great outdoors? First, you need to decide where you want to go. You can camp in an established campsite for a fee in places like national parks, state parks, and regional or county-run parks.

In the U.S., you can also camp on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in established campsites or on public lands (this is called dispersed camping).

You can also camp on private land in privately owned campgrounds and RV parks, like KOA establishments, or by renting space from a landowner via platforms like Airbnb and Hipcamp .

The type of camping you choose will depend heavily on your preferences, your location, and how far in advance you’re planning your trip.

When planning a camping trip, be very aware of the weather during the time of year and at the location you’d like to visit. If you’re tent camping, you’re more or less at the mercy of the elements (although gear like tent heaters can make a big difference when it’s cold).

Unless you’re an experienced camper or have gear to help you enjoy being outdoors in very hot or very cold temperatures, avoid putting yourself in these situations by camping in milder weather.

When deciding on a duration for your camping trip, consider your gear and your group’s limits. For many, a two-night camping trip over a weekend is long enough to enjoy the activity. For others who may have more gear and/or more tolerance for living primitively, a week is more ideal.

As you research for your camping trip, you may come across different terms for different types of camping. For instance, there’s tent camping, car camping, RV camping, backcountry camping, backpacking, overlanding, and glamping (plus many more).

Try not to get hung up on the terms; we explain the basics below.

Car Camping

The camping trips you remember from childhood were likely traditional tent camping—where you pitch a tent and sleep in it. Car camping can also be a form of tent camping because one meaning of car camping is any type of camping where you drive up to your campsite and can store gear in your car.

This is in contrast to backpacking, where you carry all your gear on your back and hike to the place where you’ll be setting up camp. Some people define car camping more literally as sleeping in your car.

RV camping involves driving an RV or a van or pulling a camper trailer to a designated place and sleeping in it.

RV campers may choose to camp in established sites with hook-ups for electricity, sewage, and/or water, or they may choose to “boondock” or “dry camp”, which is basically just RV camping without those amenities.

Tent and RV campers typically set up in the front country, where campsites are established and there are basic amenities like roads, bathrooms, and potable water.

Backcountry or Dispersed Camping

Backcountry camping is any form of camping that takes place in more remote and less-established parts of parks or wilderness. Backpacking and thru-hiking are the best ways to backcountry camp because you can often only get to these places on foot.

Overlanding

Overlanding can also take you to remote places . . . with the help of your 4×4 vehicle. Overlanders may pitch a tent when they’re ready to make camp, or they may use a truck tent for sleeping that connects to their vehicle.

Glamping was a $3.2 billion market in 2023 , so maybe you’ve heard of it. “Glamping” means different things to different people, but it always involves amenities you don’t typically associate with other types of camping.

Amenities may include Wi-Fi, bathrooms with plumbing, and real beds. The difference between glamping and staying at a hotel is usually the setting that surrounds the establishment.

If you’ve selected front-country tent camping or front-country RV camping, before you can get out there on your outdoor adventure, you must reserve a campsite.

Keep in mind that reservations are not required for all established campgrounds; some are first come first served. However, you won’t know that until you look, and many do require a reservation and, therefore, planning on your part.

For federally owned and managed lands, including U.S. National Parks and U.S. National Monuments, you should visit www.recreation.gov to explore what’s available and ultimately book a campsite. Be aware that if you’d like to camp in popular places, you may need to book up to six months in advance.

To camp on state-owned land, search for the state’s parks and recreation website or do a web search for “California state park camping” (replace “California” with the relevant state for your search).

Each state does it differently, but this should get you to the right place. Many state campgrounds also provide a mix of first-come-first-served sites and reservation-only sites.

When selecting a campground, consider where you want to be while you camp. In the U.S., you can camp in alpine/mountain environments, you can beach camp, and you can camp in the desert—and there are many variations of these basic categories as well.

Your preferred scenery, ideal weather, and favorite activities to do while camping will all help narrow down the choices when it comes to choosing a campground.

Pinpointing the Best Site

Once you’ve selected a campground, it’s time to pick the best campsite. First, consider your equipment.

Some sites are reserved for tents only, while others are designated for RVs. Often, sites can accommodate tents, trailers, or RVs up to a certain length, but not always, so be sure to check the site requirements.

Consider your group size. Double sites are often available within campgrounds to accommodate large groups who would like to camp together. Individual and group sites often have limits on the number of people and vehicles allowed.

To select a prime campsite, look at a map of the campground online. Often, you can pinpoint sites that have more space, are closer to (or farther from) amenities like bathrooms and water spigots, or that have a particular view you’d like to have.

You can often use the map to pick a site that backs up to a creek, that’s next to a trailhead, or that is farther from the road, depending on your preferences.

Camping Basics: Explained

If you’ve never been camping before, the idea of temporarily living outside may seem a bit foreign—and maybe even overwhelming.

Before we get to our camping essentials checklist, which will help you get all your camping gear packed and ready, let’s prepare for your next camping trip by going over some camping basics.

Ah, sleeping under the stars. It sounds so dreamy, right? It’s not always, though. Sometimes, it’s just sleeping outside in the freezing cold. The thing is, we all do this to ourselves because camping is fun.

So how do you sleep while camping? What are your options for staying comfortable ?

Most people don’t sleep out in the open when they camp; they’re in some sort of structure. This structure could be a camper trailer, a van, or an RV, or it could be a tent.

When it comes to selecting a camping tent , you must consider things like how much room you need, how easy you want the setup to be, and what bells and whistles you want or need.

Within your sleeping structure, you’re going to add some more sleeping items to your camping checklist, like a sleeping bag, an air mattress, a sleeping pad, and/or a camping cot .

Decide whether you’re comfortable sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag or if you need to get up off the ground by using a camping mattress or cot.

If you’re out in cold weather without the proper warmth or stuck in the rain with no rain jacket, you’re going to have a rough time no matter what you’re doing.

Therefore, to have a good time camping, you must bring the right camping clothes. What you wear while camping will depend on where you are, what season it is, and what the weather is like during your trip.

How to Layer

Layering is important when camping because the weather can vary significantly depending on the time of day. In general, layers of camping clothes should include:

• A moisture-wicking base layer
• An insulating layer
• A waterproof and windproof outer layer (like a rain jacket)

Always check the weather forecast before you pack for camping. This will help you know which layers you need and how many items from each category to bring so you can stay comfortable.

Camping Footwear

The footwear you need will depend on the activities you plan to enjoy while camping. If you’ll be hiking, bring hiking boots or other hiking shoes. If there’s a lake, river, or stream nearby, bring hiking sandals or water shoes.

For around the campsite, it’s best to have at least one sturdy, closed-toe shoe option and an easy-to-slip-on pair of shoes, like sandals or boots you can step into. Don’t forget moisture-wicking socks for daytime and thick socks for chilly nights.

Camping food can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be, but most people keep it simple. Camp kitchen essentials include a portable camping stove or BBQ and fuel for it, some cooking implements and cooking utensils, and some serve ware and eating utensils, to cover just the basics.

Most campsites will have a picnic table, but if there’s no picnic table at your campsite, you’ll also need some sort of camping table for preparing and/or eating food.

Transporting food on camping trips is a bit of an art. You need a way to store food and keep it cool for the duration of your time camping.

This typically involves some specialized cooler and ice or ice packs. The best camping coolers are bear-resistant, which means they’ll also keep out other wildlife, not just bears.

If you’re camping in bear country, it’s extremely important to keep all of your food in bear canisters or locked in your vehicle away from your tent or sleeping space.

Treat your trash the same way. If you’re using plastic bags for trash, hang them up from a tree branch overnight or put them in a wildlife-proof container.

Many campgrounds are close enough to towns with grocery stores and restaurants, so you can leave your campsite to go pick up more ice and food, or even just have someone else cook you dinner if you need a break.

If you really don’t want to cook while camping, you can always survive on canned foods, trail mix, and energy bars for a few days.

Though cooking every night can be tiring, it’s fun to break out the Dutch oven and see what you can create over an open flame. Try out a few of your favorite recipes from home, and taste the difference between cooking over an open flame.

There are a few different camps of people when it comes to hygiene on camping trips:

• Camp one says you’re camping, you’re dirty, you’re fine
• Camp two does the minimum by filling plastic bins or buckets with soap and water, then cleaning themselves using a washcloth
• Camp three buys camping showers (or camps in an RV)

Depending on how clean you want to be while camping, your camping checklist will look a bit different. At the very least, add biodegradable soap and a towel to your camping gear to wash up when you need to. If you’re going all in with the camping shower, add some more camping toiletries to your packing list.

How much you wash may also depend on how available water is to you at your campsite. If you have easy access to water via a spigot or sink, you may feel more inclined to wash up than if you only have what you’ve hauled in.

Note that some campgrounds do have coin-operated showers available.

Washing Dishes

Washing dishes is similar to washing bodies; you need biodegradable soap, a dishcloth or sponge, and a towel for drying. You can wash dishes in a bin or bucket or add a collapsible sink to your camping gear (a collapsible sink is totally worth it).

A camp kitchen is one of the campsite essentials for people who like to cook. It’ll include surfaces and methods for prepping and cooking food and cleaning up your dishes when you’re done.

When nature calls and you’re camping in the remote wilderness, you head into nature with a wag bag or a small trowel—unless, of course, you have a camping toilet on your packing list. Some areas have rules that require you to pack out your waste using a wag bag or similar solution.

If your area does not have a pack-out rule, then the best practice is to dig a cat hole at least 200 feet away from a trail, campsite, or source of water, cover your waste, and pack out your used toilet paper.

If you’re front-country camping, though, there are likely facilities available to you, ranging from flushing toilets to outhouse-style toilets in a dedicated building. If you prefer to BYOT (bring your own toilet), there are plenty of options . Choose biodegradable toilet paper to complement your portable throne.

Most campsites have fire pits available for campers’ use. It’s best practice to either collect firewood from the area (be sure to add an ax to your camping gear for chopping wood) or buy a bundle of locally sourced firewood at the campground or nearby.

Your camping packing list should include a lighter or matches, some fire starters, and some firewood.

If you’re going dispersed camping and there is no fire pit available, you’ll need to bring or make your own. It’s a good idea to add a portable fire pit to your camping must-haves if you plan to camp anywhere other than an established campground.

Alternatively, you can always find a clear, level space, encircle it with rocks, and build your fire there.

Always check for fire restrictions in an area before lighting a campfire and properly extinguish your fire when you’re done.

The Ultimate Camping Packing List

Ready for a list of camping must haves? When it’s time for your next camping trip, pack the following items to ensure you have all the camping gear you need. Please note that your camping packing list will vary slightly depending on the type of camping you’re doing, as well as the season and the location.

• Camping tent with tent stakes (consider bringing extra stakes)
• Tent footprint and rain fly
• Sleeping bags
• Sleeping pads, air mattresses, or camping cots
• Camping blanket(s)
• Shade structure
• Camp stove or portable grill
• Fuel, charcoal, or propane
• Lighter or matches
• Cookware (including pots, pans, and cooking utensils)
• Cooler and food storage bins
• Biodegradable soap and sponge
• Food and snacks
• Water containers, gallon water jugs, and/or water bottles
• Camping table (if no picnic table at your site) and/or portable camp kitchen
• Bottle opener
• Portable coffee maker
• Base, insulation, and outer layers (see How to Layer above)
• Weather-appropriate footwear (see Camping Footwear above)
• Extra socks and underwear
• Hat and sunglasses
• Headlamp and/or flashlight (with extra batteries)

• GPS device ( GPS watch , personal locator beacon, smartphone, etc.)
• First-aid kit, including bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, scissors, safety pins, etc.

• Biodegradable toilet paper and trowel
• Hand sanitizer
• Cell phone (note, you might not have cell service)
• Bug protection/insect repellant
• Other personal items like lotion, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and others as needed
• Multi-tool or knife
• Fire starters
• Camp chairs
• Backpack or daypack
• Camping fan
• Extra batteries

How, you may ask, can you pack everything from graham crackers, a bottle opener, and a sleeping bag to solar panels and a tent in a way that makes sense?

Many people have dedicated storage bins for their camping gear, so these items can often be transported in the same bins that they’re stored in. Clear plastic bins are helpful because you can see what’s inside.

Use coolers and any sort of reusable bags you have on hand to transport your camping food and drinks. Collapsible totes are a great choice for staying organized, and you can collapse them when you’re not using them. A duffel bag does the trick for transporting your camping clothes.

Bring some extra trash bags (or, even better, a large cloth bag) to store dirty clothes in after you wear them, and don’t forget to have a bear-proof container on hand to store your camping food so wildlife can’t get to it.

Small clear plastic bins are also helpful for storing things like cooking utensils, serve ware, and first-aid items.

Potential hazards while camping are similar to potential hazards while hiking ( see our guide to day hiking here ) and include slips and falls, getting lost, wildlife encounters, and extreme weather.

Be diligent about where you walk, add offline navigation tools to your list of camping must-haves (since you might not have service at your campsite), carry bear spray, always watch for wildlife, and don’t forget to check the weather forecast before you start a camping trip.

Campsites have rules to not only keep people safe but also to make sure camp neighbors are being courteous to each other. Rules may include campsite-wide quiet hours, fire restrictions, and rules about where to park and not to park vehicles.

Leave No Trace Principles

In general, when outdoors, you should also follow the seven Leave No Trace principles , which include:

• Plan ahead and prepare
• Travel and camp on durable surfaces
• Dispose of waste properly
• Leave what you find
• Minimize campfire impacts
• Respect wildlife
• Be considerate of other visitors

The ultimate camping checklist may not exist, simply because there are so many different types of camping and so many different types of campers, and everyone’s needs are going to vary sightly.

However, now that you’re armed with information about how to plan a camping trip, know all about the camping basics, and have a camping checklist of gear and other essentials, you’re ready to start prepping for your first (or next) trip.

No matter how much you prepare, stuff will come up. If you have the knowledge and the essential items, you can be creative when challenges arise while camping. And sometimes, the unexpected makes for a particularly memorable camping experience.

My First Trip to Norway, With A.I. as a Guide

Can artificial intelligence devise a bucket-list vacation that checks all the boxes: culture, nature, hotels and transportation? Our reporter put three virtual assistants to the test.

The assignment was clear: Test how well artificial intelligence could plan a trip to Norway, a place I’d never been. So I did none of my usual obsessive online research and instead asked three A.I. planners to create a four-day itinerary. None of them, alas, mentioned the saunas or the salmon.

Two assistants were, however, eager to learn more about me in order to tailor their initially generic recommendations, which they had spewed out within seconds. Vacay , a personalized travel planning tool, presented me with a list of questions, while Mindtrip , a new A.I. travel assistant, invited me to take a quiz. (ChatGPT, the third assistant, asked nothing.)

Vacay’s and Mindtrip’s questions were similar: Are you traveling solo? What’s your budget? Do you prefer hotels or Airbnbs? Would you rather explore the great outdoors or pursue a cultural experience?

Eventually, my chat sessions yielded what seemed like well-rounded itineraries, starting with one day in Oslo and moving on to the fjord region. Eventually, I locked down a trip that would combine the assistants’ information and go beyond a predictable list of sites.

This time around, my virtual planners were far more sophisticated than the simple ChatGPT interface I used last year on a trip to Milan. Though it offered more detailed suggestions for Norway, I ended up ditching ChatGPT in the travel-planning stage after it repeatedly crashed.

Vacay’s premium service, which starts at $9.99 per month, included in-depth suggestions and booking links, while Mindtrip, which is currently free, provided photos, Google reviews and maps. During the trip itself, each delivered instantaneous information by text and always asked if more specific details were needed. Sadly, only ChatGPT offered a phone app, whose information I found to be outdated (the $20-per-month premium version is more current).

I’m not alone when it comes to turning to A.I. for help: Around 70 percent of Americans are either using or planning to use A.I. for travel planning, according to a recent survey conducted by the Harris Poll on behalf of the personal finance app Moneylion, while 71 percent said using A.I. would most likely be easier than planning trips on one’s own.

I decided to find out for myself in Norway.

A whirlwind day in Oslo

After I landed at Oslo Airport, all three assistants directed me to the Flytoget Airport Express Train , which got me to town in 20 minutes. I was delighted to find my hotel adjacent to the central railway station.

Choosing accommodations had not been easy. I was looking for a midrange boutique hotel, and the A.I. assistants generated many options with little overlap. I went with Hotel Amerikalinjen , Vacay’s recommendation, which it described as “a vibrant and unique boutique hotel in the heart of Oslo.” Its location was the main draw, but overall the hotel exceeded my expectations, blending comfort and style with the 20th-century charm of its building, which once housed the headquarters of the Norwegian America Line shipping company.

For the one-day Oslo itinerary, the assistants were in agreement, packing in the city’s top sights, including the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Royal Palace , the Nobel Peace Center, Akershus Fortress and the Munch Museum. I shared my location and asked each assistant to restructure the itineraries to start from my hotel. But when I gave in to my own research instincts and pulled up Google Maps, I saw that the order they suggested didn’t make sense, so I plotted my own path.

By the time I got to Frogner Park at midday, I had already covered half of the sights, and after walking past more than 200 sculptures by the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, I was happy to sit down and admire his granite monolith of entwined humans.

For lunch, the assistants recommended high-end restaurants in the bustling waterfront neighborhood of Aker Brygge . But I wanted a quick bite in a more relaxed atmosphere, so I ditched A.I. and walked to the end of the promenade, where I stumbled upon the Salmon , a cozy establishment where I started with salmon sashimi that melted in my mouth and finished with a perfectly grilled fillet. How had my assistants not mentioned this place?

Next on my list was the Nobel Peace Center, the Opera House and the Munch Museum. The assistants had not recommended prebooking tickets, but fortunately, I had done so, learning, in the process, that the Peace Center was closed, a crucial bit of information that A.I. did not relay.

It was chilly for mid-June, and as I walked along the harbor promenade toward the Munch Museum, I spotted small floating saunas, which my assistants had not included. I went back to the ChatGPT phone app for recommendations. Even though I was eager to try a floating sauna, where people warmed themselves and then plunged straight into the frigid waters of the Oslofjord, I took ChatGPT’s suggestion and booked the Salt sauna, which is where I headed after spending a few hours at the Munch Museum, with its extensive works by the Norwegian artist and its sweeping views of Oslo’s harbor.

At the Salt cultural complex , a large pyramidal structure on the water, I was relieved that swimsuits were a requirement. In Scandinavia, saunas are usually taken naked , and earlier, I had asked ChatGPT for the etiquette at Salt, but it failed to give me a definitive answer. After sweating it out with around 30 strangers in Salt’s main sauna, I dipped into a cold-water barrel tub and then tried the smaller sauna options, which were hotter and quieter. It was the perfect ending to a long day.

Waterfalls, lush valleys, raging waters

Each of my assistants had different ideas on how to reach the fjord region. ChatGPT suggested taking a seven-hour train ride and then immediately embarking on a two-hour fjord cruise, which sounded exhausting. Mindtrip suggested taking a short flight to Bergen, known as the “gateway to the fjords,” and setting out on a cruise the next day, which was perhaps more efficient, but would also mean missing one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Vacay also recommended a train ride.

After conversing with the assistants, I decided on a shorter train journey (six hours) that would deliver me to Naeroyfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage site with lush valleys and thundering waterfalls. But to figure out the logistics for transport and accommodation, I needed live train timetables, which I found on my own, and information on hotel availability that none of the assistants had.

At this point, I was desperate for human guidance to navigate the region’s expensive and limited accommodations. This is where the pictures and reviews on Mindtrip were useful, helping me to understand that I would be paying premium prices for the spectacular setting of a mediocre hotel.

The train ride from Oslo to Myrdal was breathtaking: rolling hills, mountain villages, fjords, waterfalls. But nothing prepared me for the majestic one-hour Flam railway ride that followed. Vacay had described it as an “engineering marvel” with a breathtakingly steep descent as it passes picturesque villages, dramatic mountains, raging rivers and pounding waterfalls, complete with a dance performance featuring a mythological spirit known as a huldra.

The next morning I boarded a Naeroyfjord cruise, recommended by Vacay, on an electric, 400-person vessel. I was surprised by the serenity of the fjord. Later I learned from a tour guide that I had been lucky to visit when there were no large cruise ships. It was hard to imagine an ocean liner maneuvering through the narrow, windy fjord, but when I asked ChatGPT, it told me 150 to 220 cruise ships squeezed through the fjord each year, a detail that I felt the travel assistants should warn travelers about.

The cruise ended in the village of Gudvangen, where rain made me cancel a hike to a waterfall and instead try my hand at ax-throwing in the Viking Village Njardarheim. The assistants had told me that there were buses that left town every four hours, a time frame that had worked with my original hiking plan, but now I was stuck. Thankfully, I took note of the A.I. disclaimers to check all information and found an alternative shuttle bus.

On my way to Bergen, I decided to stop in the town of Voss, famous for extreme sports like skydiving and spectacular nature. All the A.I.-suggested hotels were booked, but a Google search led me to the lakeside Elva hotel , which had delicious farm-to-table food. I suspect it didn’t make the A.I. shortlist because it was new.

I ended my trip in Bergen, which, despite being Norway’s second-largest city, maintains a small-town charm with its colorful wooden houses and cobblestone streets. With only half a day to explore, I followed Mindtrip’s short itinerary, starting with a hearty lunch of fish and chips at the bustling waterfront fish market and ending with a funicular ride up Mount Floyen for panoramic views of the city and fjords. The A.I. dinner suggestion at the Colonialen was perfect: cozy vibe, live jazz and locally sourced dishes.

The bottom line

None of the A.I. programs were perfect, but they did complement one another, allowing me to streamline my travel decisions.

Overall, Mindtrip — with its polished, dynamic interface that allowed me to cross-check details with maps, links and reviews — was my favorite. While it gave some good recommendations, Mindtrip needed more prompting than Vacay, which offered a wider variety of suggestions in more detail. Unfortunately, Vacay doesn’t save chat history, which I discovered halfway into my planning after closing the website’s tab on my browser.

The biggest drawback was the absence of phone apps for Mindtrip and Vacay, which led me to rely on ChatGPT’s basic A.I. assistant when I needed on-the-spot guidance. Mindtrip, I’ve since learned, is planning to debut an app in September.

Still, there were times when I desperately craved the human touch. Before setting out on a trip, I always contact friends and colleagues for recommendations. This time, as part of the A.I. experiment, I refrained from reaching out to a Norwegian friend until after my trip, only to find out that we had both been in Oslo at the same time.

That’s one element of travel that I doubt A.I. will ever master: serendipity.

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

When to book flights for international travel, when to book flights for summer 2024 travel, when to book flights for holiday 2024 travel.

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Katy Nastro is a travel expert at Going, a website that finds flight deals to more than 900 destinations around the world.

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.

NEW YORK (AP) — A Senate staffer testified at a bribery trial that planning for Sen. Bob Menendez’s 2021 trip to Egypt and Qatar got “weird” after the Democrat directed that Egypt be included in the process, a Senate staffer testified Monday.

Sarah Arkin, a senior staffer with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, testified as a government witness at a trial over bribes of hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold and cash allegedly paid to the senator in return for benefits he supposedly delivered to three New Jersey businessmen from 2018 to 2022.

Among favors he allegedly carried out, one included helping Egyptian officials in exchange for one businessman gaining a monopoly on the certification that meat sent to Egypt met Islamic dietary requirements.

Then, prosecutors say, he aided a prominent New Jersey real estate developer by acting favorably to Qatar's government so the businessman could score a lucrative deal with a Qatari investment fund.

Besides charges of bribery, fraud, extortion and obstruction of justice, Menendez is also charged with acting as a foreign agent of Egypt.

Menendez, 70, and two businessmen who allegedly paid him bribes have pleaded not guilty to charges. A third testified earlier at the trial which entered its seventh week. When Menendez was charged last fall, he held the powerful post of chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a position he relinquished soon afterward.

In her testimony, Arkin said Menendez had asked Senate staff to reach out to an individual at the Egyptian embassy who they didn't know as they planned the weeklong trip to both countries, even though such excursions were usually planned through the State Department and U.S. authorities.

Although foreign embassies were routinely notified about any U.S. legislators who were traveling their way, Arkin portrayed it as unusual that a trip by a U.S. senator would be planned in conjunction with a foreign embassy.

Later, Arkin said, she was told Menendez was “very upset” after he'd been notified that two Egyptians, including Egypt's ambassador, had complained that she notified Egyptian officials that Menendez would not meet with Egypt's president during the trip “under any circumstances.” She said she was told that the senator didn't want her to go on the trip.

She testified that she told Menendez that the claim that she told anyone that he would not meet with Egypt's president was “absolutely not true” and that she would never use stern language such as “under no circumstances” even if he declined to meet with someone.

Arkin said another Senate staffer working to plan the trip wrote to her that “all of this Egypt stuff is very weird.”

“It was weird,” she said. Arkin said she was “not an idiot” and “would not have phrased anything that way” by saying the senator would not meet a foreign president of a nation important to the United States “under any circumstances.”

Questioned by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Richenthal, Arkin also mentioned that Menendez's wife, Nadine Menendez, was “trying to be involved in the planning” and had “lots of opinions” about what she wanted to do during the trip.

Nadine Menendez also has pleaded not guilty in the case, but her trial has been postponed so that she can recover from breast cancer surgery.

As he left the courthouse Monday, Menendez said Arkin could have gone on the trip if she wanted, but she “chose not to go.”
