Your Trip to Udaipur: The Complete Guide

udaipur trip cost for couple

No longer in the shadow of the iconic UNESCO World Heritage City of Jaipur, Udaipur has evolved into a heritage hot-spot and top tourist destination in Rajasthan . This isn't surprising, as the romantic city of lakes and palaces invariably delights visitors with its enchanting setting and evocative regal history. The Mewar royal family has done much to preserve and make accessible the legacy of their ancestors, who founded Udaipur in the 16th century . In addition to this stately splendor, Udaipur is a laid-back city that offers great value for all types of travelers. The 1983 James Bond movie "Octopussy" was filmed there, too!

Find out all you need to know in this Udaipur guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Udaipur's location at the southern end of the Aravalli Range separates it from the Thar Desert, producing a semi-arid local steppe climate that's not too extreme. The cool, dry, and sunny months from October to February are most comfortable and draw the crowds. Nights do get nippy during the middle of winter, but the days are gloriously warm, with temperatures of up to 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius). If you'd prefer a more peaceful experience, the September shoulder season after the monsoon could be perfect. Only visit Udaipur during April and May if you don't mind temperatures touching 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or more. Read more about the weather and climate in Udaipur and the best time to visit Udaipur .
  • Language: Rajasthani (Mewari local dialect), Hindi and English.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Udaipur does not have daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Udaipur's narrow lanes are ideally explored on foot, so do bring comfortable walking shoes. Auto rickshaws are readily available and should cost under 100 rupees ($1.40) to go anywhere within the city. App-based cabs Uber and Ola are the most convenient way of reaching attractions on the city's outskirts. They're usually cheaper and less-hassle than auto rickshaws.
  • Travel Tip: If hot weather isn't an issue, the Gangaur festival takes place in April and is the biggest festival of the year in Udaipur. The three-day Mewar festival, dedicated to showcasing the region's culture, is held alongside it and is a fun experience.

Things to Do

Udaipur has a compact but captivating collection of museums that showcase the region's culture and heritage. Simply wandering the streets and soaking up the atmosphere are among the most enjoyable things to do in Udaipur. Those who are feeling energetic can cycle around the city, hike in the hills, or even go horseback riding. Cooking classes are a hit with foreigners. Udaipur is renowned for its unique miniature paintings, and they make great gifts. You can even paint your own. Many tourists love shopping in Udaipur because of the abundance of irresistible handicrafts. Do allow some time for a day trip or two into the surrounding countryside—there are some interesting options, including ancient forts and temples.

  • The City Palace Complex , including the City Palace Museum, is Udaipur's star attraction. More than one million people visit it each year . It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and provides incredible insight into the life of the royal family.
  • A boat ride on Lake Pichola is magical at sunset! (Sit on the right side of the boat for the best vista).
  • A heritage walking tour will immerse you in Udaipur's old city off the tourist trail.

Our detailed articles about the best things to do in Udaipur and the top places to visit near Udaipur have more information.

What to Eat and Drink

Distinct from predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani cuisine, the local Mewari cuisine in Udaipur features an assortment of rustic meat dishes, as the royal rulers of the region were avid hunters. Laal Maas (spicy red mutton curry) is the most famous dish. Fresh fish from the region's lakes is part of the cuisine too. You may even find rabbit on some restaurant menus!

Vegetarians can try regional specialties such as Gatte ki Sabji (steamed chickpea flour dumplings in a tangy tomato and yogurt curry) and Dal Bati Churma. Udaipur is also renowned for its deep-fried snacks such as Mirchi Bada (large green chilies stuffed with spices and potato) and Kachori (pastry discs with spiced lentils or onion fillings). For sweet tooths, there are desserts, including Malpua (pancakes fried and dunked in sugar syrup) and Ghevar (a cake-like dish soaked in sugar syrup and ghee).

The few bars that Udaipur does have close by midnight. So, if you're looking for nightlife in Udaipur , you'll be disappointed. Drinks are best enjoyed under the stars at a rooftop with a mesmerizing backdrop of the city and Lake Pichola.

Where to Stay

The majority of Udaipur's accommodations are situated on Lake Pichola's east side, in the Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat, and Chandpole areas bordering the lake. This is on the same side of the lake as the City Palace and is in the heart of the old part of the city, so you'll have easy access to the main attractions. There are all kinds of properties, including boutique heritage hotels, guesthouses, and backpacker hostels. Many offer lake views. Read more about the various neighborhoods in Udaipur .

Two authentic palace hotels are set within the City Palace Complex itself—the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel and Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel (which features in "Octopussy"). The ethereal Taj Lake Palace Hotel, which appears to float right in the middle of Lake Pichola, is the top choice, though.

Across the bridge, the northwest side of Lake Pichola around Hanuman Ghat is quieter, but hotels proliferate. The benefit of staying on this side of the lake is that you'll be able to see the City Palace across the lake. Luxury five-star hotels such as The Leela and the Oberoi Udaivilas also front this side of the lake, albeit in more isolated spots.

See our recommendations for the best hotels in Udaipur.

Getting There

Udaipur's airport is 30 to 40 minutes east of the city. It's a small domestic airport that receives flights from Jaipur and major cities in India, including Delhi and Mumbai.

Udaipur is situated about five hours south of Jodhpur , and there are several attractions (such as Kumbhalgarh fort and Ranakpur Jain temple) to check out on the way. Therefore, it makes sense to hire a car and driver to travel between these two cities if you're exploring Rajasthan. You can also drive from Jaipur to Udaipur, or vice-versa, and spend a night in Bundi to break the journey. (Bundi is about five hours from Udaipur and four hours from Jaipur).

Indian Railways trains stop at Udaipur, although services are quite limited. The railway station, Udaipur City, is only five minutes east of the City Palace area. Its station code is UDZ.

Culture and Customs

Tipping isn't compulsory in India, although it's expected if you're happy with the service. A 10 to 15 percent tip is sufficient at a restaurant, or simply round the bill up on smaller amounts. Flag down the waiter to get your bill. Hotels will commonly have a tip box where you can leave gratuities for the staff. Tour guides can be tipped a couple of hundred rupees per day, and around 400 rupees for drivers.

Being a popular tourist destination, Udaipur has its share of scams to watch out for. Beware of anyone who tells you a royal wedding is about to take place (they'll lead you to a tailor's shop to get an overpriced outfit made for the non-existent occasion), or that they're involved in exhibiting special embroidery or other handicrafts (which they'll end up trying to sell you).

Dress standards are fairly conservative in Udaipur. It's respectful to keep your shoulders and legs below the knee covered. Ladies, if it's hot and you want to wear a sleeveless top or dress, solve the problem by throwing on a shawl when necessary.

Money Saving Tips

  • Hotel rates fall by 50 to 75 percent from March until the end of September, during the summer and monsoon season. For some people, this may make luxury hotels affordable. Fantastic deals are guaranteed during this time, no matter where you stay.
  • Grab an unlimited Rajasthani thali (platter) for lunch. You'll be able to eat as much as you can for only a few dollars.
  • Haggling is expected at markets and other stores that aren't fixed-price (such as government emporiums). Here are some tips for bargaining to help with the process.

Udaipur Itinerary: The Best Places To Visit In 2 Days

Last Updated on February 29, 2024 by Natalia

Known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur is one of India’s most romantic cities full of wonderful places to visit in a 2 day itinerary. The best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days are scattered around the city – from the stunning City Palace beside Lake Pichola to Monsoon Palace to Badi Lake. There are many great cities to visit in Rajasthan such as Jaipur and Jaisalmer , but Udaipur really stands out. Find out exactly how to spend your time in the city with the best places to visit in this 2 day Udaipur itinerary!

Table of Contents

2 Day Udaipur Itinerary

The stunning City Palace is the perfect place to visit to begin your 2 day itinerary in Udaipur. Situated on the shores of Lake Pichola and built over the course of nearly 400 years, it’s the largest palace in Rajasthan.

Built entirely from granite and marble, the palace complex features an array of terraces, courtyards, gates, and gardens, as well as many beautiful and intricately decorated rooms. On top of that, the architecture of the palace as a whole is impressive in its own right.

The Maharana ruled their kingdom from the Udaipur City Palace, making it one of the city’s most significant landmarks. There’s so much to see inside, with particular highlights being the stunning ‘blue room’ and the exquisitely designed Mor Chowk courtyard.

Blue room in the City Palace - a must see on your 2 day Udaipur itinerary

As well as the above, you can expect to see a collection of different artefacts in the City Palace Museum, from weapons to clothes to jewellery. The palace is also known for making an appearance in the James Bond film, Octopussy.

The City Palace is the most visited attraction in Udaipur and a must see place to visit in this 2 day itinerary, so we recommend arriving when it opens at 9.30am – that way you can avoid the crowds.

There is an entrance fee of 300 rupees per person, with a guide costing 250 rupees per hour or an audio guide costing 200 rupees. With so much to see you can easily spend 2-3 hours exploring this fascinating palace complex.

Once you’ve finished exploring the City Palace, we recommend heading to the impressive Jagdish Temple – a Hindu temple opened in 1651. It’s one of the largest temples in Udaipur, and it’s conveniently located just a short walk from the City Palace.

Jagdish temple - one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Next up we recommend stopping for lunch at a rooftop restaurant, which is a must do during your 2 days itinerary in Udaipur. There are several to choose from, with many offering amazing views of the City Palace, Taj Lake Palace and Lake Pichola, as well as the city itself.

After lunch walk over to Ambrai Ghat, which is situated on the edge of Lake Pichola. From here you can enjoy lovely views of the City Palace and Taj Lake Palace, so it’s well worth a quick visit.

As part of your 2 day Udaipur itinerary we definitely recommend getting a 2 hour guided boat tour across the lovely Lake Pichola to find out more about the rich history. Click here to book this tour with Get Your Guide!

View of City Palace, Udaipur from the edge of Lake Pichola a must visit place in this 2 day itinerary

Spend the rest of your afternoon visiting the famous Monsoon Palace – another filming location for Octopussy. Located on top of a hill, the palace offers some amazing panoramic views of the area and is definitely one of the best viewpoints of Udaipur.

The palace itself is reasonably impressive from the outside, but we found the inside particularly underwhelming, especially in comparison to the beautiful City Palace. Fortunately, it’s well worth making the trip for the wonderful views of Udaipur. From this high up you can appreciate the vast diversity of the city, with its rolling mountains, green hills, and lakes.

To get from Udaipur to Monsoon Palace you need to take a taxi or tuk-tuk to the entrance, which should cost around 300-400 rupees for a round trip. Your driver will drop you off at the ticketing office at the base of the hill, where you need to pay an entrance fee of 300 rupees.

On top of the ticket price, you also need to pay around 100 rupees for a return journey in a share taxi/van to take you a few kilometres uphill to the palace itself. It’s a bit of a thrilling ride, as the drivers take the sharp bends a bit too quickly for our liking!

Once you’re at the top, explore the palace and then just sit back and enjoy the views. If it’s not too cloudy then stick around for sunset, but if not head back to where the taxi/van dropped you off and wait to be taken back down to the entrance.

If you’re looking for an easier way to complete the first day of this itinerary then you can book a private tour that visits all of these spots via Get Your Guide. These tours start from as little as 3000 rupees per person, with entry fees included in the price depending on the option you select.

View from Monsoon Palace - worth including on your 2 day Udaipur itinerary just for the views

The second day of this Udaipur itinerary takes you to two of our favourite places to visit in the city – Badi Lake and Animal Aid Unlimited. Both spots are outside of the city so you will need to take a tuk-tuk or taxi, which should cost around 700 rupees in total.

Badi Lake is around a 45-minute drive from the city, and is one of the hidden gems of Udaipur. The city is well known for its lakes, and Badi Lake is by far the most beautiful lake we saw in the area.

If you want to escape the city’s busy streets then this is the perfect place to come. It’s substantially quieter than the lakes in the city so it’s relatively peaceful, and when we visited there were only a few other locals around.

What makes Badi Lake so beautiful is the breathtaking scenery surrounding it, and the best point to admire this from is Bahubali Hill. It’s an incredibly picturesque spot, with 360 degree views of the lake and surrounding hills as far as the eye can see. Visiting Badi Lake is a place you must visit on a 2 day itinerary in Udaipur.

Click here to read our guide to visiting Badi Lake and Bahubali Hill!

View from Bahubali Hill at Badi Lake, Udaipur, one of the best things to do and places to visit in a 2 day Udaipur itinerary

After you finish up at Badi Lake get your driver to take you to Animal Aid Unlimited, which is around 20 minutes away. If you’re not an animal lover then you may prefer to return to the city itself and explore, but for anyone that does like animals we can’t recommend this place enough!

Animal Aid Unlimited is an organisation set up in 2002 to help treat and rescue sick, injured or stuck animals in the Udaipur area. They look after a range of animals on site, including dogs, cats, donkeys and buffalo – all of which have been rescued from the streets or were in need of urgent medical attention.

They do some truly incredible work rescuing and taking care of these animals, and you can learn all about the work they do on a tour.

Travelling around India one of the things you’ll notice is the number of stray dogs and animals on the streets, so it’s important organisations like this exist and are supported.

Injured Dog at Animal Aid Udaipur

When we were in Jodhpur we discovered a severely injured donkey in the road, but unfortunately there are no organisations like Animal Aid in the area so, despite our best efforts, we couldn’t do anything to help.

Tours at Animal Aid Unlimited cost nothing, so visiting is definitely one of the best free things to do in Udaipur. Donations are encouraged to help support the good work they do, and they also have t-shirts for sale with the profits being used to care for the animals.

For an animal lover this place is a must visit as well as a great thing to do when visiting Udaipur.

If you have more time in Udaipur then you can also volunteer at Animal Aid Unlimited, so make sure to visit their website to find out about visiting and volunteering!

Best time to visit Udaipur

The best time to visit Udaipur is between the months of October and March, as the temperatures are more bearable at this time of year. Between March and June it can get very hot in the city, and so it can make going out and exploring uncomfortably warm.

Monsoon season in Udaipur runs from around June to September, which is important to consider before you visit. The rainiest months tend to be July and August, but if you visit in September you may escape the worst of the rain.

Summer (March to June)

Udaipur travel in the summer season is not for the faint-hearted. With temperatures soaring from 38 to 40 degrees, heat waves make it extremely uncomfortable and dangerous to move out for any sightseeing. The evenings are pleasant and are the only time for any outings.

Although the entrance fees and hotel accommodations will be friendlier and luxury will be affordable, most palaces, forts, rides, and lakes will be out of bounds. The usual Udaipur packages will have fewer activities and more luxurious feasts around the hotel pools and restaurants. The Mewar festival is the only thing that can be enjoyed in the sweltering heat. Remember to carry light, cotton clothes with open sandals. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreens are a must to prevent sunburns, and drink water frequently to fight dehydration.

What to eat in Udaipur?

Though most Udaipur trip packages will include lunch and dinners, you can still refer to the below-mentioned list of must-haves, to understand what to eat in Udaipur. Food tours are also great ways to try out local street delicacies.

Dal Baati Churma

An iconic Rajasthani dish, well served in Udaipur. If you feel hungry while on a Udaipur city tour and crave something healthy yet fulfilling, try this simple and flavorful dish. The Daal is a lentil soup, the Bati are small wheat flour balls roasted and dunked in ghee, and the Churma is made of grounded Baatis mixed with sweet jaggery.

Machli Jaisamandi

It is believed to have derived its name from Lake Jaisamand, created by Mewar ruler Jai Singh who was served freshwater fish curry by the local tribes to please him. You can refer to your Udaipur travel guide to find places that serve this dish unique to Udaipur.

A typical, crispy, deep-fried Rajasthani snack or breakfast dish served with chutneys or curd dip. There are various types depending on the variety of stuffings put in it, like Pyaz (Onion Kachori), Daal (Lentil Kachori), and Curd (Dahi Kachori). You can find Kachori shops on every corner during the Udaipur city tour.

Mirchi Vada

Very popular with locals, these deep-fried chilli fritters are spicy and tangy. The spice comes from the balance of spices mixed with potato and stuffed inside them. Then these are dipped into chickpea batter and deep-fried. You must make a stop at Dhabology for these delicious bites even if you are on a  Udaipur one day tour.

Mewari Thali

One lunch in your Udaipur itinerary should consist of this Mewari Thali as lunch at the Nataraj Hotel. This came to the forefront when Anthony Bourdain, a famous chef and traveller visited this place and fell in love with the food. Thali consists of simple yet flavorful local dishes like Kachori, a dry seasonal vegetable, a potato curry, a paneer dish, and a flatbread along with rice, and ends with soft and warm gulab jamun.

Methi Ki Gotey

It works as the confluence of Gujarati Gotey, fried fenugreek balls dipped in yoghurt sauce, or Rajasthani kadhi. A one-of-a-kind street food found in selected places of Udaipur.

Doodh Jalebi and Rabdi Malpua

Do end your tour of Udaipur with a sweet dish. Amongst many unique “mithai”, Jalebi with warm milk is a combination that will leave you craving for more. Rabdi Malpua is another pancake-like sweet made from “Rabdi” or thickened milk, mixed with sugar and flour and fried in pure clarified butter.

Save some money from your Udaipur trip cost and try these specialities from local street side stalls and restaurants and you will never forget the experience.

Must visit Restaurants/ Resorts in Udaipur

As mentioned above in the must-have food list, there are popular local restaurants that serve these dishes and have maintained their authentic make and taste. These are some of the must-visit restaurants or food shops that you can incorporate into your Udaipur trip plan:

For breakfast or snacking on Hing kachori or dahi kachori, stop near Jagdish Temple and try some in Jagdish Shri Restaurant nearby. But foodies who want to have the best ones need to head out to Pratapgarh Chaatwala just outside Central Jail. The best way is to check your Udaipur sightseeing package and find the local markets near the monuments you are visiting,  to try out fresh and local favourites.

You can try the affordable Manoj Prakash Centre, near Gulab Bagh for a bowl full of Daal Baati Churma. Another famous place is Santosh Dal Bati Restaurant which serves this authentic dish.

If you love your meat and fish, try a tribal dish of Machli Jaisamandi, served in Paantya Restaurant and Laal Maas (or red mutton curry ) served in Upre or Ambrai restaurants just across Lake Pichola. A Udaipur city tour will become more enjoyable with these little food breaks.

A little sweet after all these savoury delights will only enhance your satisfaction with the Udaipur tour. Dunk your sweet and crispy jalebi in warm saffron milk at Trivedi Upahar Grah, an age-old sweet shop at Surajpole Circle.

The Rabdi Malpua at Shyam Misthan Bhandar will satisfy non-sweet lovers as well. The crispy and flaky pancakes are made of thickened milk and dipped in sugar syrup.

The must-visit resorts in Udaipur are

The resorts chosen for accommodation in Udaipur holiday packages depend on your budget and the number of persons visiting. However, if you love luxurious places and want to feel like royalty, some resorts can be hand-picked to give you a regal experience.

Adjacent to Lake Pichola and City Palace is Oberoi Udayvilas which offers a luxurious stay with all modern amenities.

The Lalit Laxmi Vilas Palace, located beside Lake Fateh Sagar is a heritage palace that has now turned into a 5-star hotel but retained its architectural beauty with domes, frescos, and archways. Udaipur travel packages sometimes can be curated along with packages offered by these resorts, especially for newlyweds or Honeymooners.

Fateh Prakash Palace Resort, named after Maharana Fateh Singh was a royal residence converted to a commercial lodging for tourists. However, they have retained the lighting and the inimitable turrets and vaults.

If you are a nature lover, include The Aodhi Resort Kumbhalgarh resort in the Udaipur vacation packages. Hidden amidst the greeneries of the Aravalli Range, you can take a leisure walk exploring the nearby first flora and fauna.

What to shop in Udaipur?

The markets of Udaipur are sure to make the women in your group very happy. They will be spoilt for choices.

The Udaipur trip packages will have a day for visiting the marketplaces. It is ideal to be prepared with your list to maximise your time. Here is a list of the most coveted souvenirs from Udaipur:

Miniature paintings give you a glimpse into the history of Rajputs of Rajasthan. These are small, highly detailed paintings, with bold colours and contemporary styles. The history of these paintings dates back to the 16th century when this form of art flourished under the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh I. You will get the best of these in Mewar Art Gallery and Vinayak Arts and Crafts. You can add these galleries to the list of sightseeing in the Thomas Cook Udaipur itinerary.

Leather Diaries are perfect and exclusive souvenirs, these leather diaries are durable and water resistant. The leather is processed by local craftsmen using ancient techniques of tanning and stitching leather. The natural fabric and intricate crafting on the leather make these the choicest souvenirs for any tourist. You can get the finest ones in Craft Shades Inc. and Leather Panache.

Block Print Fabrics with the art of Dabu or Akola is exclusive to Udaipur. These patterns are derived from natural forms. You can find these in Hathipole Bazaar or Bada Bazaar which are any ways among the famous Udaipur places to visit for shopping.

The typical Rajasthani puppets are called “Kathputlis”. The puppeteers called  “Nats” and “Bhats” are local tribal nomads who believe that the art of manoeuvring puppets to convey traditional folklore has a rich history dating back to the 1st century. You will find these puppets wearing colourful Rajasthani costumes and headgear, extensively in Hathipole Bazaar.

Intricately designed pottery in Shilpagram captures the city's art heritage. Detailed ornate vases, charming figurines, and well-crafted platters are displayed for the tourists to choose from. You can drop in during the Udaipur city tour and pick up some quality souvenirs to take back home.

The bazaar near Ghanta Ghar has several local shops offering jewellery with Meenakari, Polki, and Kundan works. You can find antique silver pieces decorated with souvenirs at affordable prices. Pick up some exclusively designed neckpieces, earrings, and bracelets for the women back home.

The shopping list in your Udaipur itinerary will leave you quite satisfied with its variety and affordability.

Day 1 of Udaipur Itinerary for 4 Days

9 am: breakfast @ cafe la comida.

Some travelers choose a package at a hotel that includes breakfast. If you’re one of them, you’re, of course, sorted. If you are like us who don’t want to limit themselves, you’re in for a treat 🙂

Cafe La Comida , right in the heart of the old city, is a great place to have a delicious breakfast. With the warm and welcoming ambiance, charming setting, prompt service, and good food – you are sure to come back!

10 am: Jagdish Temple

jagdish temple udaipur rajasthan

Just 120 meters from Cafe La Comida, Jagdish Temple is a beautiful Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Apart from being one of the holiest places in Udaipur, the temple is a work of art.

Constructed in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Sing, the erstwhile ruler of Udaipur, the temple showcases stunning Indo-Aryan architecture.

The main shrine houses the idol of Lord Vishnu. Carved out of a single piece of black stone, the idol is a sight to behold.

The main shrine is circumscribed by four smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Sun God, Goddess Shakti, and Lord Shiva. You should walk around the inner sanctum (in a clockwise direction) to seek the blessings of other Gods.

Once you’ve got the blessings, give yourself enough time to admire the intricate carvings and paintings that adorn the temple.

Note: There are a few religious customs that need to be followed when visiting the temples in India viz. dress conservatively, cover your head (carry a stole or shawl), and remove your shoes.

11 am: City Palace

city palace udaipur rajasthan

One of the largest palace complexes in Rajasthan, City Palace is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Udaipur. The construction of this masterpiece was initiated by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1553 and was carried on by his successors over a period of 400 years.

The palace exquisitely combines Medieval, European, and Chinese architecture. The canary yellow exteriors showcase granite and marble work whereas interiors are intricately embellished with marble, mirrors, murals, wall paintings, silver, colored glass, and inlay.

The palace complex houses many small palaces and other beautiful structures. Suraj Gokhda, Ganesh Chowk, Mor Chowk, Rajya Angan, Dilkhush Mahal, Badi Chitrashali Chowk, Zenana Mahal, Surya Chopar, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Krishna Vilas, Bhim Vilas, Amar Vilas, Rang Bhawan, Laxmi Vilas Chowk, Badi Mahal, Manak Mahal, and City Palace Museum are some of the notable attractions inside the complex.

Fateh Prakash Palace and Shiv Niwas Palace have been converted into heritage hotels. Shambhu Niwas is the present home of the royal family.

Badi Pol, Tripolia, and Hathi Pol are the gateways or entry points to the magnificent City Palace.

The palace is not only known for its architectural grandeur but also for its beautiful setting. It is located on the banks of Lake Pichola and is surrounded by majestic Aravalli hills. The highest point of the palace, Amar Vilas offers breathtaking views over Lake Pichola, its islands, and surrounding mountains.

City Palace Museum Timings: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, all seven days a week. Entrance Tickets: INR 300 (USD 3.80) per adult and INR 100 (USD 1.27) per child aged 5 to 17 years.

Note: Mewar Sound and Light Show takes place at the Manek Chowk in City Palace every evening and the timings change with the season. The ticket prices depend upon the seating option you choose. It’s a great show if you want to know the history of Mewar. We skipped it as we had visited City Palace with a registered guide who had already narrated the stories of Mewar to us.

2 pm: Lunch @ Paantya Restaurant

It’s time for lunch! We dined at Paantya, a multi-cuisine restaurant at Shiv Niwas Palace , and loved it to the core. From the beautiful ambiance, tasty food, and wonderful hospitality to charming interiors, royal vibes, and great views – Paantya surpasses our expectations.

Try their Mewari cuisine.

4 pm: Lake Pichola: Boat Ride & Jag Mandir

boat ride lake pichola udaipur rajasthan

A trip to Udaipur is incomplete without a boat ride on Lake Pichola. It’s a must!

The boat ride on the lake is mesmerizing, no matter what time of day it is. However, travelers endorse the sunset boat cruise as the captivating views of the golden hour from the lake are to die for.

There are four islands viz. Jag Niwas , Jag Mandir , Mohan Mandir , and Arsi Vilas on the lake. Jag Niwas has now turned into a 5-star hotel, Taj Lake Palace , and entry is only allowed to the hotel guests. Jag Mandir or Lake Garden Palace was used as a summer retreat by the royal family. Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas are two simple medieval structures that you can witness from the boat.

The boat ride starts from Rameshwar Ghat and includes a visit to Jag Mandir, one of the four islands on the lake. There’s not much to see on Jag Mandir. There’s a restaurant, the Darikhana , which is super expensive and the food is average. You at most need half an hour or so to admire the beautiful garden courtyard and stone carvings.

Boat Rides Timings: 10 am to 5 pm

Tickets: INR 400 (USD 5.07) per adult and INR 200 (USD 2.53) per child from 10 am to 2 pm; INR 700 (USD 8.87) per adult and INR 400 (USD 5.07) per child from 3 pm to 5 pm. So, you need to pay double the price if a sunset boat ride is what you crave!

6 pm: Tea, Coffee, and Snacks @ Brew Villa

Brew Villa is one of the best cafes in Udaipur. With overwhelming options on the menu, delightful ambiance, great prices, excellent service, and not to mention, central location – the cafe and restro comes highly recommended.

7 pm: Dharohar Dance Show @ Bagore Ki Haveli

dharohar folk dance show bagore ki haveli udaipur rajasthan

If you do only one thing in Udaipur, let it be the Dharohar Folk Dance Show at Bagore ki Haveli.

This traditional Rajasthani folk dance and music show bedazzles its audience. The women dressed in colorful Rajasthani folk costumes perform various dance forms of Rajasthan viz. Chari Dance, Terha Taal Dance, Gorbandh Dance, Ghoomar Dance, and Bhavai Dance. From skillfully balancing the earthen pots or lit brass pots on their head to dancing on broken glass to twirling in a circle at high speed – the finesse with which the artists carry out the show is amazing. I feel great respect and admiration for them.

Apart from various dances, you get a chance to see Rajasthan’s famous string puppet art. The puppet show brings smiles to the faces of little ones.

Show Timings: 7 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 9 pm

Tickets: INR 100 (USD 1.27) per adult and INR 50 (USD 0.63) per child for Indian nationals; INR 200 (USD 2.53) per adult and INR 50 (USD 0.63) per child for foreign nationals; and INR 100 (USD 1.27) for a camera

Note: You can buy the tickets online or from the ticket counter. The seats fill out fast so it’s recommended to book the tickets in advance.

8:30 pm: Dinner @ Ambrai Restaurant

Now that you’ve enjoyed the cultural extravaganza, it’s time to relish the food extravaganza.

Set on the banks of Lake Pichola, Ambrai overlooks the imposing City Palace, the famous Taj Lake Palace, and Gangaur Ghat. The views are mesmerizing, especially at night when the lake shimmers with the city lights reflecting on the water.

The restaurant serves multi-cuisine delicacies. The food is good, however, the view adds to the entire experience.

Note: It’s a good idea to reserve a table a day before your visit to avoid any disappointment.

8 am: breakfast @ sai baba paratha center.

Sai Baba Paratha Center serves different types of paratha, an Indian breakfast delicacy. A plate comes with two parathas (of your choice), and curd.

It’s your typical hole-in-the-wall but the food is good.

Alternatively, you can also try Yummy Yoga . It’s a rooftop cafe with amazing views and yummy food.

11 am: Chittorgarh Fort

chittorgarh fort udaipur rajasthan

One of the largest forts in India, Chittorgarh is located just about 112 km away from Udaipur and makes for a fascinating day trip. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2013 along with five other forts in Rajasthan viz. Kumbhalgarh , Jaisalmer , Ranthambhore , Gagaron , and Amber .

Built in the 7th century, the fort is mostly in ruins but looks majestic. It echoes the tales of pride, heroism, sacrifice, romance, and spirit of Rajputs. No wonder, it’s called the Pride of Rajasthan .

Guarded by 7 huge gates namely Padan Pol , Bhairon Pol , Hanuman Pol , Jorla Pol , Ganesh Pol , Laxman Pol , and Ram Pol , the fort houses Vijay Stambh , Kirti Stambh , Gaumukh Kund , Rana Kumbha Palace , Padmini Palace , Ratan Singh Palace , Shiva Temple , Meera Temple , Kalika Mata Temple , Fateh Prakash Palace Museum , and Jain Temples .

Chittaur witnessed many dramatic and tragic events, the most notable being the war waged by Alladin Khilji . You’d know the story if you’ve seen Padmavat , an Indian period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Chittorgarh with its impressive palace complexes, massive gates, and historic temples doesn’t cease to amaze its visitors.

Timings: 9 am to 5 pm, all seven days a week

*Fateh Prakash Palace Museum is open from 9:45 am to 5:15 pm and is closed on Mondays.

Entrance Tickets: INR 35 (USD 0.44) per Indian adult and INR 550 (USD 6.97) per foreign adult

Note: Hire a registered guide, especially if you’re traveling with kids, to dive deep into Indian history and culture . Visiting historical monuments like this is a great way to inculcate curiosity in kids’ minds about India’s incredible kaleidoscopic past.

1 pm: Lunch @ Gangour Restaurant

Gangour Restaurant is one of the best restaurants near Chittorgarh. It serves authentic and traditional Rajasthani food at great prices. The owner and the staff of the restaurant are friendly and welcoming. The service is surprisingly efficient.

The must-try dishes are Ker Sangri, Papad ki Sabzi, Gatte ki Sabzi, Kadhi, Dal Bati Churma, and Bajre ki Roti.

4:30 pm: Indian Tea @ Sigdi Chai

You can’t visit Udaipur and not taste the famous sigdi chai at Sigdi Chai . Also known as tandoori chai, sigdi chai is made by placing an earthen cup (kulhad) in a burning hot tandoor with the help of iron tongs and waiting till it’s red hot.

Then it’s taken out and masala tea is poured into it and let it sizzle and froth so as to add a smokey flavor to it. At last, the tea is poured into a fresh clay cup and served.

5:30 pm: Saheliyon Ki Bari or Garden of the Maidens

Built by Rana Sanga for his queen and her 48 maids (thus, the name Garden of the Maidens) to offer respite from the routine, Saheliyon Ki Bari is a captivating garden with an assortment of flowers, fountains, pools, marble pavilions, and lush lawns.

Located on the top of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill), Maharana Pratap Memorial is a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest warriors in Indian history, Maharana Pratap. The memorial commemorates the 16th-century battle of Haldighati.

You can walk uphill (about 1 km) from the main gate just across the Fatehsagar Lake to the memorial or buy a ticket for a vehicle that costs INR 150 (USD 1.90).

Majestically perched on Bansdara peak of Aravalli Hill, Monsoon Palace was built in 1884 by Maharana Sajjan Singh of Udaipur who wanted it to be a grand 9-floor astronomical center but that couldn’t happen due to his premature death.

It was later used as a hunting lodge by the royal family. Owing to its strategic location, the palace became a viewpoint for the royals to watch the clouds, scudding across the sky during monsoon and thus, the name.

The palace is also famous for being the filming location for the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy.

There’s really nothing much to see here except the views. Tourists flock here in large numbers to enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the surrounding hills, especially during sunset hours.

All light up in the evening, the palace looks ethereal.

Timings: Monsoon Palace is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm.

Entrance Fee: You can take your bike, car, auto, or taxi to the fort, for a fee, or can avail of a paid shuttle service. There are additional charges for the camera.

You can also plan to visit Sajjangarh Biological Park . Kids would love it. It’s open all days except Tuesdays and the timings change with the season. The e-vehicle (which costs about INR 400 or (USD 5.07) takes about 40 minutes to an hour to complete the tour.

Note: You can enjoy evening tea and snacks at Chunda Palace Café and Restaurant .

6:30 pm: Evening Aarti @ Jagdish Temple

Aarti is a religious ritual in Hindus where fire is offered to the deity. You can read more about it here .

Sandhya Aarti (Evening Prayer) at Jagdish Temple takes place between 6:30 pm and 7:45 pm.

It’s when the air is filled with the fragrance of incense sticks and flowers and the sound of ringing bells and melodious bhajans (devotional songs) and the ambiance of pure divinity and spirituality transports you to another world. It is a not-to-be-missed experience for everyone, devotee or non-devotee.

8 pm: Dinner @ Charcol By Carlsson

Lip-smacking food, awesome view, superb service, and warm staff – you’re in for a great dining experience at Charcoal by Carlsson .

Day 4 of Udaipur Itinerary for 4 Days

Note: Today’s going to be a hectic day so it’s suggested to grab a quick breakfast at your hotel or on the way from Udaipur to Maharana Pratap Museum.

9 am: Haldighati and Maharana Pratap Museum

haldighati maharana pratap museum

Located in the Aravalli Mountain range, Haldighati is a historical (it has great significance in Indian history) mountain pass that narrates the story of the courage and bravery of Maharana Pratap, the 13th king of Mewar.

It’s where the Battle of Haldighati was fought between the Rajputs and Mughals. It’s where Chetak (Maharana Pratap’s beloved horse) breathed his last.

Located in close proximity is the Maharana Pratap Museum , an effort to celebrate Maharana Pratap, one of the greatest warriors of India. The museum showcases the life and times of Maharana Pratap in an intriguing way.

Timings: It’s open all days from 7 am to 7 pm

Entry Tickets: INR 100 (USD 1.27) per person.

12 pm: Lunch @ Pangat

Pangat is one of the best restaurants near Kumbhalgarh Fort. Located on the terrace of Raajsa Resort Kumbhalgarh , the restaurant serves pure vegetarian food and offers both a-la-carte as well as buffet spreads for lunch and dinner.

1 pm: Kumbhalgarh Fort

kumbhalgarh fort rajasthan

One of the most important forts in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kumbhalgarh is famed for its wall. Yes, the Fort Wall is recognized as the second-longest wall in the world (the Great Wall of China enjoys the first spot) and is known as the Great Wall of India .

The fort is also known for being the birthplace of the legendary king of Mewar, Maharana Pratap.

The fort remains almost invincible (it’s knocked down by invaders only once during its lifetime) because of its strategic location, well-thought-out architecture, and smart defense strategy.

Enveloped by 13 mountain peaks, the fort is guarded by an imposing 36 km long and 15 feet wide wall, seven soaring gates, and loads of rounded bastions and watchtowers. The fort is so big that it holds up to 360 Hindu and Jain temples.

The sprawling fort complex echoes the stories of its rich and enduring past. Kumbha Palace , Badal Mahal , Ganesha Temple , Neel Kanth Mahadeva Temple (houses 6 feet tall Shivlinga), and Mammadev Temple are some of the important attractions to explore inside the fort complex. And you can’t miss the bird’s eye view from the top of the fort.

The fort is surrounded by the huge Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary which is famous for its varied wildlife. You can book a morning or evening jeep safari if you’ve time.

Note: We totally recommend hiring a government-authorized tour guide if you wish to have a detailed visit and want to learn more about the fort’s remarkable history. Also, be prepared for an arduous uphill walk.

Timings: The fort is open all days from 9 am to 6 pm

Entry Tickets: INR 10 (USD 0.13) for Indian citizens and INR 100 (USD 1.27) for foreigners.

PS: If you are planning to stay overnight near Kumbhalgarh Fort, you can also enjoy a fascinating light and sound show every evening from 6:45 pm to 7:30 pm. The show ticket costs INR 100 (USD 1.27) for Indians and INR 200 (USD 2.53) for foreigners.

You can either hire a car with a driver or join a guided tour like this or this one to visit Kumbhalgarg Fort from Udaipur.

4 pm: Ranakpur Jain Temple

ranakpur jain temple

One of the most beautiful temples in India, Ranakpur Jain Temple is the epitome of architectural genius. Also, the temple is an oasis of spirituality and serenity. It holds a special significance for the followers of  Jainism and thus, is counted among the five major Jain pilgrimage sites.

Legend has it that a local Jain businessman and the finance minister of Rana Kumbha (then ruler of Udaipur), Seth Dharna Shah started the construction of this temple in 1446 followed by a divine vision.

It took over 50 years and two thousand seven hundred and eighty-five workers to complete this architectural marvel.

The temple complex hosts 3 shrines viz. Chaumukha Temple , Neminath Temple , and  Parshawanath Temple .

Chaumukha Temple is the main temple. Shaped as a celestial vehicle (Nalinigulm Vimana), Chaumukha Temple is dedicated to the first Tirthankara Adinatha . It’s intricately carved from white marble and over 1444 pillars hold the temple together. And surprisingly each pillar is individually carved. No two pillars are the same!

Don’t miss to look up. The ceilings are gorgeously carved!

Another remarkable feature of Chaumukha is the idol of Bhagwan Sri Parshvanath with 1008 hooded cobras. It’s carved out of a single slab of marble.

PS: If a pujari (priest) offers to provide a tour of the temple or say a prayer for you, you must pay them a decent amount as a donation.

Timings: Ranakpur Jain Temple is open all days from 6:30 am to 8 pm but tourists are allowed to enter between 12 pm to 5 pm.

Entrance Fee: There’s no entry fee, but you’ll have to pay INR 100 (USD 1.27) for each camera or mobile phone that you are taking inside the temple premises. Please be aware that photography of idols is prohibited.

Audio Guide Service is available at a fee of INR 200 (USD 2.53) which is optional for Indian citizens and compulsory for foreigners.

Note: There are strict rules that need to be followed before you enter the temple. Dress modestly. No bare shoulders and legs. Use a scarf (available at the ticket counter) to cover your shoulders. Leather articles like belts, wallets, handbags, watches, and of course shoes are not allowed. You can store your belongings in a rented locker.

8 pm: Dinner @ Khamma Ghani

What better way to end your trip to Udaipur than relishing authentic Rajasthani food at Khamma Ghani , a restaurant that’s famous for its ideal location (ah, the views!), warm hospitality, nice ambiance, and tasty food. We tried their laal maas, mirchi ka salan, gatta curry, and mewari khichdi.

We spent a night in Kumbhalgarh at The Aodhi and explored Ranakpur Jain Temple the next day morning and then continued our journey to Jodhpur. If you are exploring Udaipur as a part of your Rajasthan Itinerary , you can easily explore all the major attractions viz. Eklingji , Shrinathji Temple in Nathdwara , Haldighati , Maharana Pratap Museum , Kumbhalgarh Fort , and Ranakpur Jain Temple while traveling between Udaipur and Jodhpur.

6 thoughts on “The Best Udaipur Itinerary for 4 Days”

I loved Udaipur when I visited the city a few years ago. The City Palace is gorgeous and I loved the sunrise over the lake. This is a fantastic itinerary to take in the best of the city.

Great post! This looks like a really good 4 day itinerary that covers so many amazing sights. I’ve love to visit here one day.

Wonderful blog. Do you have recommendations for tour guides to the Chittorgarh Fort?

Thanks for stopping by. Here’s a list of government-approved local guides for Chittorgarh .

Very nice Itinerary including the timings. Did you carry out excursions yourself or your hired local guides? If yes, it will be good to provide their contact information.

Hey Rajesh,

Thank you for the kind words on the itinerary! We hired a chauffeur-driven car for our trip through Rajasthan, which eventually became a fantastic decision. Our driver, a local from Udaipur, knew the area well. He doubled as a guide, offering invaluable local insights and tips throughout our journey, adding a personal and authentic touch to our experience. I have the driver’s contact number, though his name escapes me at the moment. However, I strongly suggest hiring a local driver-guide for a more immersive and enjoyable trip in Rajasthan. I can’t share his contact number publicly for privacy and security reasons, so I’m mailing it to you.

I tried Princess Cruise's premier package. At just $80 a day, it's one of the best deals at sea.

  • I paid about $80 a day for a premier package on a recent Princess Cruise .
  • The fee got me unlimited room service, onboard WiFi, premium desserts, and more.
  • The package was an incredible value and it made my trip feel luxurious.

Insider Today

I've been on 18 cruises and I absolutely love them.

I wake up in a new place every morning and unpack only once. Most of my meals are planned and paid for in advance, and I feel the ocean breeze every time I step out onto my cabin's balcony .

The only letdown is when the bill that arrives the night before each cruise ends contains more charges than I'd kept track of in my head.

I hate the wallet-wrenching surprise of that final invoice, filled with a few more drinks than I remember ordering, the WiFi I couldn't live without, and the specialty dining restaurants I splurged on.

But all that changed the moment I discovered the Premier Cruises' Premier Princess package on Princess Cruises during a family vacation on the Regal Princess in December.

Although my parents, brother, and brother's girlfriend went à la carte with their onboard purchases, my fiancé and I ordered the premier package.

It gave us a huge leg up throughout the trip. Here's why it may be worth considering if you're planning to sail with Princess Cruises.

For just $80 per person per day, we got tons of perks

The premier package costs $80 per day per guest, which amounts to $560 per person on a seven-day sailing (or $1,120 per couple).

At first glance, that sounds like a significant additional line item — but not when you compare the included items to the cruise's à la carte costs.

Princess Cruises' Premier Princess package includes:

  • WiFi: Up to four devices per guest
  • Beverages: Premium drinks (up to $20 each), bottled water, specialty coffee and juice bar
  • Crew appreciation: Mandatory prepaid tips
  • Professional photos: Unlimited digital photos and three prints
  • Specialty multi-course meals: Two per sailing
  • Meals at casual-dining restaurants: Unlimited
  • Premium desserts: Unlimited treats from specialty venues
  • OceanNow: Fee waived for food and drink delivery anywhere on board
  • Room service delivery: Unlimited
  • Fitness classes: Unlimited classes by Xpotential (Pure Barre, Yoga Six, and Stretch Lab)
  • Reserved theatre seating
  • Princess Prizes: Win prizes like wine tasting, onboard credit, and more by opening your door during certain hours

I didn't indulge a ton on my trip but I still saved money with the premier package

Right off the bat, passengers must pay $16/day for crew appreciation (read: gratuities). Crew appreciation is included in my package, so that's $112 of the $560 I paid for the package accounted for.

I'm a light drinker, so I only ordered two alcoholic drinks a day: usually a pre-dinner cocktail ($15 to $20 à la carte) and a glass of wine with dinner ($10).

Related stories

I sometimes got a soda with lunch ($2.50) or a specialty coffee ($3 to $4) at breakfast. That totals $27.50 to $34 a day, or $192.50 to $238 a week for a week of drinks if they were à la carte.

For the record, though, the premier package includes 15 alcoholic beverages daily, so you can drink far more than I did and order over $2,000 worth of drinks in a week.

I also saved on onboard WiFi, an essential for me because I'm always working and sharing my adventures in real time on Instagram .

Since I use both a phone and a laptop, I'd need to connect at least two devices. That would typically cost $40 a day, but up to four devices are included with the package. So that's a savings of $280.

If you're keeping tabs, I've now accounted for more than the cost of the premier package with just drinks, gratuities, and WiFi.

With our savings already more than accounted for, everything else was a bonus

For instance, I enjoy breaking up the monotony of eating in the main dining room with visits to such specialty restaurants as Sabatini's Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill, or The Catch by Rudi. Cover charges at these eateries range from $35 to $39 per person. I dined at two during my sailing, which would have totaled $74 without the package.

Because this was our first family vacation in about a decade, getting family photos was also a priority. So most nights before dinner, we visited the various portrait stations around the ship.

With the premier package, I was given an unlimited number of digital images, so we didn't have to make difficult decisions about which photos to keep and which to discard.

We ended up with more than a dozen digital photos and six prints. On the other hand, my brother and his girlfriend bought some of their couples-only photos and paid $191.75 for five digital photos.

Plus, my fiancé and I indulged in a few premium desserts ($10 each à la carte), I took a fitness class to help balance them out ($30 à la carte), and we made use of the OceanNow service that delivers food or drinks to you anywhere on board ($15 one-time fee).

Overall, my package basically paid for itself, and then some

Overall, I'd estimate we saved at least $275 per person by choosing this package — and we used the included perks rather conservatively since we just aren't big drinkers.

But even if you only plan to have two drinks a day like we did, this package basically pays for itself.

It's worth noting that you can only order the package before you board or through the second day of your sailing. Both passengers in a stateroom must sign up for it.

If one of you doesn't drink alcohol or doesn't care to be connected to WiFi, it probably won't make financial sense to purchase this package.

But the best part of having this package was that I never felt nickeled and dimed and was able to just enjoy a week with my family in the Caribbean .

I didn't stress about putting any extras "on my tab" because I knew my final bill would be a fixed cost I'd already made peace with. And by doing so, I certainly came out ahead.
