Pass/No Pass Policy

  • A student may elect the Pass / Not-Pass option for elective courses only, unless an academic unit requires that a specific departmental course/s be taken Pass / Not-Pass.  Students may elect to take University Core Curriculum courses Pass / Not-Pass; however, some major Plans of Study require courses that also fulfill UCC foundational outcomes.  In such cases, students may not elect the Pass / Not-Pass option.  A maximum of 24 credits of elective courses under the Pass / Not-pass grading option can be used toward graduation requirements. Civics Literacy Proficiency Requirement

The civics literacy proficiency activities are designed to develop civic knowledge of purdue students in an effort to graduate a more informed citizenry. for more information visit the civics literacy proficiency  website..

Students will complete the Proficiency by passing a test of civic knowledge, and completing one of three paths:

  • Attending six approved civics-related events and completing an assessment for each; or
  • Completing 12 podcasts created by the Purdue Center for C-SPAN Scholarship and Engagement that use C-SPAN material and completing an assessment for each; or
  • Earning a passing grade for one of  these approved courses (or transferring in approved AP or departmental credit in lieu of taking a course).

Upper Level Requirement

  • Resident study at Purdue University for at least two semesters and the enrollment in and completion of at least 32 semester hours of coursework required and approved for the completion of the degree. These courses are expected to be at least junior-level (30000+) courses.
  • Students should be able to fulfill most , if not all , of these credits within their major requirements; there should be a clear pathway for students to complete any credits not completed within their major.

Study Tourism at Florida International University - Global

Because of the importance of the tourism industry within the U.S. economy there are many top-ranked schools offering degrees in this area of study. Every year thousands of international students come to the States to attend these schools and to acquire valuable internship experience.

Thousands of international students choose to study tourism in the USA because of the importance of the tourism industry around the world. The USA is also home to a number of top ranked schools offering degrees in tourism. The criterion that makes these schools top level institutions can vary from the awards they receive, campus location, and the depth of knowledge and experience students gain from attending these schools. Many tourism degree programs are based in the business schools of universities and prove to be a very diverse field of study. To earn a degree in tourism, international students may find their courses centered around economics, marketing, geography, anthropology, biology, history, law, social sciences, architecture, and business – and most of the time it will also include internship experience. There is a long list of top schools offering a tourism degree in the USA.

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University was recently given the Haas Wilkerson Gold Pinnacle Award. The International Festivals and Events Association chose Temple's Event Leadership Executive Certificate Program as the winner of the award for its event management program out of 300 other higher education institutions worldwide. Aside from event management, Temple also offers a Bachelors of Science Degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management. Graduates of this degree are often sought after by companies to work as managers and event planners. International students must complete at least 124 credit hours to graduate from this program and must also participate in an internship. Many of Temple's students intern with important local, regional, state and national tourism organizations including Walt Disney World, Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, Hyatt Hotels, and more. Some of the required courses for this undergraduate degree program include Tourism Planning and Development, Marketing in Tourism and Hospitality, Global Issues in Tourism and Hospitality Management, etc.

Another good school at which to study tourism is Florida International University's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. This school is internationally recognized for its academic excellence and state-of-the-art instruction facilities. The campus is located in North Miami, Florida, which gives international students a chance to learn in one of the United States' top international travel and tourism destinations. FIU's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management offers both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in this area of study. The curriculum includes a mix of hands-on experience and academics; to graduate each student must complete the required academic courses, along with working a minimum of 1,000 hours in the industry, and complete an advanced internship of 300 hours.

Some other top tourism schools in the States include: Brigham Young University (Hawaii , San Diego State University , University of Central Florida , University of North Carolina , and Oklahoma State University .

To study tourism in the USA many international students will have to complete and pass certain tests in order to be admitted into these top tourism schools. The results of college placement tests such as the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) are typically required in a college application. When students take the SAT, it is possible to select what college/university he or she would like the test results sent to. International students can also have their ACT scores sent to a specific school by contacting the American College Testing program. Usually the United States' embassies and U.S. Information Services offices will have information on testing dates and locations. An English language proficiency test is also usually required of international students whose native language is not English. Two examples of this test are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) . It is possible that an international student may be exempt or excused from taking the TEFL and IELTS if he or she has graduated from a high school in the United States. Also, a student may not have to take a language test if he or she has obtained a graduate or undergraduate degree within the U.S. or other English-speaking country. International students should contact the school they wish to attend to find out what tests and scores they need in order to be eligible for admission.

In conclusion, thousands of international students choose to study tourism in the U.S. because of the many colleges and universities offering degrees in this area of study. Students are expected to learn about a variety of different topics that pertain to tourism, as well as gaining real-world experience through internships. Normally, international students will have to complete college placement tests as well as English language proficiency test to gain admittance to these top tourism schools.

EKU’s Global Hospitality and Tourism Degree Prepares Students for a Booming Travel Industry

HAYS, Kan. - The John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days (SACAD) at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) showcased the remarkable convergence of traditional research and cutting-edge technology. The annual SACAD event is a testament to academic rigor and the boundless potential of students who embrace innovation and collaboration. Among them this year were Cally Anderson, Marisol Banda, and Katie Hale, whose work on using artificial intelligence (AI) in tourism marketing captivated attendees and earned them the coveted People’s Choice Award for Scholarly Activities.

Their research, an exploratory study on the utilization of AI for tourism marketing in the Midwest, was a project born out of curiosity and driven by a passion for the tourism industry. With Dr. Stacey Smith as their mentor, these three students conducted extensive research, navigated the complexities of AI, and presented their findings to national and international audiences.

Their research journey was not without its challenges. When Dr. Smith, a respected figure in the tourism academia, called upon FHSU members of the tourism honor society Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) to undertake a research project for a conference in Miami, Cally, Marisol, and Katie immediately seized the opportunity, even though it meant doubling their workload. They embarked on two ambitious research projects, including one focusing on AI in tourism marketing.

The students found that AI is rapidly transforming how the tourism industry operates, from personalizing travel experiences to improving destination management and customer service. Surveying tourism professionals in the Midwest revealed a lack of awareness of and utilization of AI in the region. Their research recommended workshops and conferences to educate professionals on the benefits of AI in tourism marketing.

Their journey led them to the Eta Sigma Delta Undergraduate Research Conference in Miami, where they presented not one but two research projects—including the much-lauded AI study. Competing against prestigious U.S. and Hong Kong schools, their work was noticed and celebrated. Their dedication culminated with a Meritorious Paper Award for their AI research, setting the stage for further recognition at SACAD.

Researching AI in tourism was a new and exciting experience for these students. Marisol Banda, a student from Salina, Kansas, shared how the project helped her learn about data collection and research, something she had never done before. She highlighted the importance of embracing advanced technologies like AI to propel the tourism industry forward.

Katie Hale, a Hutchinson native, emphasized the importance of adapting to changes in the industry and utilizing resources and connections to enhance research outcomes. She credited the collaboration with her peers and professors for the success of their project and acknowledged the growth in her skills and confidence as a result.

Cally Anderson, originally from Topeka, found a passion for tourism through her studies at FHSU. She emphasized that despite the program not being research-intensive, the opportunity to engage in research projects opened new possibilities for students to explore their interests and develop valuable skills.

Dr. Stacey Smith played a pivotal role in guiding the students through the research process, helping them understand the importance of research in the industry and preparing them for future endeavors. She noted that the students' dedication and eagerness to learn were evident throughout the project, and their recognition at local and international events was a testament to their hard work.

Fort Hays State University continues to nurture future academically proficient leaders and innovators in their respective fields. Cally, Marisol, and Katie's accomplishments embody the university’s commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive, innovate, and prepare for the dynamic world ahead.

The 19th annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days was not just an event but a celebration of the collective efforts and achievements of faculty, students, and staff. For Cally, Marisol, and Katie, it began their journey to becoming influential leaders in the tourism industry, equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive change and enhance the world with their innovative ideas.

Each step Marisol, Katie, and Cally take from this point forward builds on the solid foundation of experiences and knowledge they acquired through their research projects. They are preparing not just for successful careers but to make significant contributions to the tourism and hospitality industry, where AI and other emerging technologies will play a crucial role. Their stories remind us that pursuing knowledge, driven by curiosity and supported by a committed community, can lead to extraordinary achievements.

As Fort Hays State University continues to grow and adapt to the changing educational landscape, the successes of its students like Cally, Marisol, and Katie will continue to inspire future generations. In an increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced world, their work exemplifies the spirit of innovation and resilience that FHSU aims to foster. Travellers urged to keep it local in the name of sustainable tourism

From rolling vineyards to stunning beaches, there’s no shortage of beauty to discover in our own backyards.

A tourism expert from the University of South Australia is urging travellers to support local destinations and experiences close to home, instead of long-haul international trips, to lessen the impacts of tourism on the environment.

Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management Dr Freya Higgins-Desbiolles says we should be considering more localised travel and doing everything we can to reduce unnecessary emissions.

She says space travel, private jet travel and mass travel to remote and extreme environments such as Antarctica are “unethical” and contribute to a culture of privileged over-consumption.

“In these conditions, it is hard to justify tourism to Antarctica. We have to question our use of cruising or flights in our tourism consumption,” she says.

“We need to create a cultural shift that sees tourism consumption as a luxury to be savoured and not something we can have every year or multiple times a year, like many have come to expect in the ‘Global North’. Shifting to an appreciation of local leisure and domestic travels and lower expectations of long-haul international travel is a must.”

The ‘Global North’ i.e. northern hemisphere, is responsible for 92% of global emissions .

In a recent research , Dr Higgins-Desbiolles responds to University of Cumbria’s Professor Jem Bendell’s “deep adaptation” analysis which argues that civilisational collapse is likely or even already underway due to the continued reliance on fossil fuels and emissions, a view shared by others including naturalist David Attenborough and the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Dr Higgins-Desbiolles outlines how tourism is contributing to the depletion of natural resources, pollution, over-consumption and environmental destruction. She also reflects on the 2023 Hawaii wildfires on the island of Maui which claimed 100 lives and destroyed the town of Lahaina. Residents lacked the water resources to fight the fires due to years of overconsumption by the golf courses, hotels and tourism corporations.

She recommends travellers be more considerate with their choices of holiday destinations and reflect on the impact of their activities on the environment.

“Tourism should be defined by the local community, with decision-making controlled at the lowest level and an emphasis on the interrelationships between people, place, ecology and all living things. We need to slow down – stay longer, stay local, be thoughtful with our holiday choices,” she says.

“There are so many resources out there like Rise Travel Institute or The Travel Foundation that shed light on sustainable, responsible and just tourism.

“It’s about respecting the destination, looking out for codes of responsibility, and making yourself aware of the culture and what challenges the communities you’re visiting are facing. I encourage people to try being more conscious on their next trip – stay in one place longer, travel more slowly, go for nature walks, engage with the culture, try to leave the destination a better place than how you found it.”

Tourism Research Australia forecasts that over the next five years, domestic travel will see only moderate growth, largely due to increased competition from international outbound travel, which is set to continue to climb .

The tourism industry contributes 8% of total global carbon emissions, yet the Tourism Panel on Climate Change – an international body of climate scientists and tourism experts – focuses on profit-first climate resilient tourism, rather than addressing the contribution of the industry to environmental destruction.

Dr Higgins-Desbiolles says it’s up to everyone to make more environmentally conscious travel decisions.

“We must see all governments willing to legislate and regulate tourism better. For example, France has passed legislation banning short-haul flights – the transport method contributing the second most to emissions – when a train journey of less than 2.5 hours is available,” she says.

“Meaningful change is needed at every level: governments, organisations and travellers need to put their focus towards sustainable and climate just tourism.”

Bulldog Bash honored with CVB Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University’s Bulldog Bash was honored with a major award at the Feb. 1 Greater Starkville Development Partnership banquet.

Alongside other prestigious community recognitions, Bulldog Bash took home the Convention and Visitors Bureau Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award for the event’s impact on tourism and economic vitality in Starkville.

The annual event presented by the MSU Student Association and held in historic downtown Starkville has grown to be Mississippi’s largest free outdoor concert. More than 35,000 attendees were counted in 2022 in the Main Street venue that has hosted numerous Grammy winners and Billboard chart-toppers over the years.

“Bulldog Bash is part of the fabric of Mississippi State and the City of Starkville,” said MSU Vice President of Student Affairs Regina Hyatt, noting that the concert draws excitement and support from students, community members and visitors.  

Mayor Lynn Spruill called Bulldog Bash “the premier event in the City of Starkville for a number of reasons. It is one of those joint events that we hold with the university, and that makes it very special.”
