U.S. Travelers Will Soon Have to Pay to Enter the U.K.

By Sarah James

An elevated view of the London skyline looking east to west

U.S. visitors—as well as visitors from Europe , Australia and Canada —will soon be required to apply for permission to enter the U.K. through a new scheme known as Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

The U.K. government is in the process of fully digitizing U.K. borders by the end of 2025—and the ETA scheme will play its part, allowing “individuals, and carriers, with more assurance at an earlier point in time about their ability to travel to the U.K.,” the government said.

The scheme will be in place by the end of this year (2023), and visitors will be required to fill out an online application granting them permission to travel. There will be a small fee included in the application—similar to how the U.S.'s own ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) system works for U.K. travelers.

Here's everything we know.

Will I need a visa to enter the U.K.?

This isn't technically a visa—the ETA system will grant travelers permission to enter the country. You will need to apply for an ETA prior to arrival. If you haven't received permission to travel before arrival, you may get fined.

West London UK

Travelers from the U.S. will soon need to apply for permission to enter the U.K.

How long will it take to get an ETA?

Travelers will be advised to apply for an ETA at least a few days before their journey. Approval should be granted within 72 hours of application.

How long will an ETA last?

After your ETA has been approved, visitors will be granted permission to stay in the U.K. for six months, whether for business or tourism reasons.

The U.K. government is yet to confirm how often visitors will need to apply for a new ETA, but it's likely to be valid for two years—meaning there's no need to apply for a new one every time you visit within the valid time period.

Peak District National Park Derbyshire UK

Visitors with valid ETAs can stay—and travel—in U.K. for up to six months.

How much will an ETA cost?

We don't know yet—but the government has said that the cost will be small. The EU implemented a similar system in 2022, which costs €7. A U.S. ESTA, meanwhile, costs $21.

Who will need to apply for an ETA?

The full list of nations included hasn't been announced yet. We do know that U.S. citizens who don't hold a visa will need to apply for an ETA, as will other visa-exempt nations such as Canada and Australia. European countries are likely to be included, too.  Those traveling from nationalities without a visa-free agreement with the UK will still need to apply for another applicable type of UK visa.

What will I need to apply for an ETA?

You'll need a valid passport , an email address to register with, and to supply the details of your travel, as well as a valid debit or credit card to pay any fees to apply.

To keep up to date with the latest information on the ETA scheme, check the official website for more details as they become available.

How Much is USA Visit Visa Fees from the UK

How to apply for a US Visa

UK nationals went on 71.7 million international trips in 2018 and a record number of 3.47 million of them visited the US, say statistics published by Finder . Therefore, it might be safe to say that America remains one of the top holiday destinations for the British.

Brand USA now advertises the country as a “fresh and unexpected destination.” CEO Christopher Thompson went on to declare that the US is expecting close to 100 million international visitors annually by the end of 2021.

America is an extremely friendly nation, always extending a warm welcome to millions of international visitors every year.

Do UK Citizens Need a US Visa?

To step onto American soil, UK nationals will first have to apply for an ESTA , or the Electronic System for Travel Authorization. The United Kingdom is one of the 38 countries that are part of the US Visa Waiver Program. Therefore, you are not required to apply for a visa to travel to the US. You can travel to America for the purposes of tourism or business, without needing to apply for a regular visa and can stay for 90 days at a stretch with an ESTA.

💡 Tip: Buy travel health insurance before your trip.

Check out popular travel insurance plans and choose one that suits you.

Most plans only cost less than $20 a day.

Visa Fees and Exceptions for Non-Immigrants from the UK

If you reside in the UK but are not a citizen, you will be required to pay a non-refundable visa fee of $160. However, petition-based applicants need to pay $190 while the fee for E-1, E-2, and E-3 visa applicants is $205. Apart from this, some applicants are exempt from needing to pay the visa fee, if they fall under the following categories:

  • Diplomatic passport holders
  • Official passport holders, applying for an official visa
  • Employees connected with international organizations (G Visas)
  • Any foreign military personnel is posted in the United States (NATO Visas)
  • Exchange visitors sponsored by the US government (J Visas)

Remember that you need to pay the visa fee at the time of scheduling your visa interview. Payment can be done via debit cards only. The US Embassy does not accept credit cards or personal checks, under any circumstances. Also, if you are an L-2 or E-2 visa holder, you need to pay a certain insurance fee as well.

ESTA Application and Cost for Immigrants from the UK

If you are a UK citizen, all you have to do is apply for the ESTA, at least 72 hours before your intended date of travel. Once you’ve applied, note down the application number. This will help you track the application status. The ESTA costs $14, if you are paying directly via the ESTA website.

However, if your entry to the United States is denied, you will have to pay only $4. This can only be paid via credit card.

An approved ESTA does not provide the same rights to a British citizen as that of a US visa holder. It allows UK citizens to travel to the USA for tourism, business, transit, or short study purposes.

However, although the UK is a part of the Visa Waiver Program, security measures to prevent intended terrorist attacks demand pre-screening of tourists before they enter the US.

My daughter is a singer who will be working on MSC Meraviglia. I would like to fly to New York to join the ship for a 2 week holiday. Please can you confirm that as a UK citizen I only need to apply for a ESTA visa rather than a full US visa ? Thank you

Hey Michael, if you have a British passport you don’t need a specific US Visa for UK citizens to enter the US, you only need an ESTA.
