Black Stork

Ciconia nigra.

The Black Stork is a large bird, standing as tall at 102cm, with a 145-155cm wingspan, and they weigh on average around 3kg. They have long necks, with long pointed red bills and red legs. Their plumage is black but in certain lights can have a purple or green sheen, and white areas on the breast and belly.

Blackstork1 2500X1500

They are solitary and shy by nature, tending to stay away from human activity. They forage alone or in small groups if there is lots of food available. Once paired, most males and females stay together for life, building nests out of sticks high in the tree canopy. Many vocalisations ranging from low grunts, hisses and whistles. During the breeding season the characteristic “bill-chattering” is their loudest vocalisation.

Black Stork 2

An occasional visitor to the UK, the improvement of wetland and coastal areas could see the increased occurrence of Black Storks here.

Blackstork3 2500X1500

Habitat degradation of its suitable breeding habitats, through deforestation of woodland, the development of industry and farming as well as the building of dams. The wintering habitats in Africa are also threatened by agricultural activity, and pollution. Hunting during migration in Europe and Asia has also contributed to population declines.

Distribution

Huge geographic range. Found from Spain to China during the summer, and spending winter in Africa and Asia.

Woodland areas that are near to marshes or wetland areas (such as ponds, rivers, estuaries) are preferred for breeding habitats.

Fish is their main source of food. Have also been known to feed on amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds, invertebrates and crustaceans.

Wildwood inside information

We have a pair of Black Storks and they are in the Ken West Aviary with the Red-Billed Chough and egrets. The female is a young bird and not yet old enough to breed, however the pair built a large nest this year.

Family facts

Black storks have the widest geographical range of any species in the stork family.

Wilder Blean Bison Project

Blean Bison in the mist

Wilder Blean

Bison benefactor for businesses

What is the #WilderBlean project?

In the UK, lack of woodland management is one of the eight biggest drivers of species decline .

Thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust have partnered up to show how European bison can provide a sustainable solution to woodland management in south east England.

Similar projects across Europe have proved that bison, known as ‘ecosystem engineers’, can restore the natural biodiversity of a landscape. Natural bison behaviours - grazing, dust bathing, eating bark and felling trees - enable other species to thrive.

The presence of bison at the Blean, alongside Exmoor ponies and Iron-Age pigs, will transform the woods into a lush, thriving, biodiverse environment once more and allow us to step back from hands-on management.

Visit our FAQ page to discover more about this incredible project and how our ecosystem engineers will help to manage this habitat and how you can get involved too.

A key part of this project will be extensive consultation and engagement with local landowners, interest groups and residents who know and love this area. Read on below and sign-up to find out more about this project and hear the latest news and updates about the impact our ecosystem engineers are having on their habitat.

Why did we embark on this project?

In the UK, we’re headed for increasing species extinctions in the next 10 years .

At Kent Wildlife Trust, we know that the key to enabling species to survive and thrive is to create a nature recovery network, of bigger, better quality, and more joined up habitats

Species in the UK are declining at their fastest rate for thousands of years according to the latest State of Nature report and unfortunately, human management alone is not enough to create the kinds of habitats species need.

What we need are natural solutions and this is why we’ve taken the strategy one step further, by promoting ‘Wilding’ across some of our sites in Kent. Wilding is when nature is given the tools and space it needs to recover itself and has the potential to increase the abundance of biodiversity to levels beyond what human management achieves and helps store carbon.

How will we measure its success?

In order to demonstrate the incredible potential of wilding as a nature-based solution to the climate and nature crises, it is crucial that we monitor each project site very carefully.

Our fantastic conservation evidence team and volunteers are out on site all the time conducting extensive fieldwork and analysing data on almost everything on site, including soil health, insect and animal abundance, vegetation structure and natural processes.

Find out more about our Monitoring Programme

Where is it?

The home of the project is  West Blean and Thornden Woods nature reserve , one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in the UK.

The wood is ever-changing and has an ancient droveway through it that is almost a thousand years old.  Before Kent Wildlife Trust bought the wood, it was managed commercially for timber production, which is why almost half of the wood is covered in plantations of non-native conifer trees.

What can you do to help?

By supporting this project, you are helping to create a bigger, better, more biodiverse home for wildlife in Kent.

Our next step is to ensure the bison can roam through their areas of the Blean, utilizing their natural behaviours and promoting landscape connectivity, whilst keeping the Blean open for the public to enjoy.

Donate to our appeal

Talk to us about sponsorship opportunities for your business

And there are many more ways you can help us to create a #WilderKent…

The Wilder Blean project aims to create a template for future wilding projects nationally. It is undeniably important that we take this leap of faith to heal nature and looking forward to a wilder future. Support Kent Wildlife Trust and help us to fight the climate and biodiversity crises for you, your children and your children’s children.

Birth of wildcat kittens sparks hope for species

A wildcat kitten

It is estimated that there are fewer than 300 wildcats left in the UK

  • Published 20 June 2024

Conservationists have said the birth of wildcat kittens at a Kent wildlife park has sparked fresh hopes for the survival of Britain's rarest mammal species.

The litter was born nine weeks ago at Wildwood Trust’s Herne Bay park near Canterbury in an off-show breeding enclosure, to parents Talla and Blair.

Laura Gardner, director of conservation at the trust, said the kittens will play an important role in bringing back the species from the "brink of extinction".

European wildcats are considered rarer than the Bengal tiger and giant panda.

Wildcats are the only native cat species surviving in Britain, with a small population still roaming the Scottish Highlands.

But with an estimated fewer than 300 individuals left, the Scottish wildcat population has been declared “functionally extinct”.

'Working together'

Ms Gardner said: "Wildwood has been breeding wildcats for over ten years, building knowledge and expertise of the species which has led to our amazing breeding success.

"By working together with the breeding programme partners, we are ensuring the beautiful wildcat has a future in Britain."

The kittens will contribute to the wildcat conservation breeding programme by The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, which has been designed to support the restoration of the species in Britain.

Wildwood said the new kittens are the first to be born since the completion of dedicated breeding enclosures at the Herne Bay park.

Sally Holt, head of carnivores and small mammals at Wildwood said: "The off-show enclosures have created a quieter environment, which will help the kittens develop key survival skills without becoming habituated to people."

"They have such a close bond already and enjoy playing and sleeping next to each other," Ms Holt added.

But come the festive season, they open up their doors to the public who can drop by Father Christmas' magical Christmas cabin to receive a gift, before walking through his enchanting 150ft animated magical grotto to the big Christmas animal barn.

Donkeys, ponies, goats and alpacas will be waiting to greet the children, who then have the opportunity to meet the stars of the show - Santa’s magical reindeer.

Both kids and adults can have a chat with the handlers and learn all about the reindeer.

Plus there's also the opportunity to purchase pellets to feed the reindeers and the other farm animals.

Other activities within the barn area include a dance and sing along with Santa’s Elves, an opportunity to make your own reindeer food, gingerbread biscuit decoration, snow pit in the marquee and a Christmas selfie room.

Hot and cold refreshments are also available.

Tickets can be bought on the gate on arrival.

Campuses Divert 105 Million Single-Use Plastics from Landfill During 2024 Campus Race to Zero Waste Competition

By: Alex Domb

National Wildife Federation

2.7 million students, faculty and staff across more than 150 college campuses donated, composted and recycled more than 30 million pounds of waste.

RESTON, Va. – Campus Race to Zero Waste , a program of the National Wildlife Federation and RecycleMania Inc., has recognized 30 colleges and universities as winners in this year’s competition. Winners are selected in each major category representing small, medium and large campus sizes, with individual winners announced for special categories.  “This year’s college and university competition participants made enormous strides on waste reduction and integrating sustainable practices throughout their campuses,” said Kristy Jones, director of higher education programs at National Wildlife Federation. “These collective actions to reduce the schools’ waste footprints are inspiring and are making a tangible positive impact on the environment.”  “Our 2024 winners show why colleges continue to be among our nation’s leaders on sustainability,” said Stacey Wheeler, co-founder and president of Campus Race to Zero Waste. “These schools run the gamut – urban and rural, public and private, large and small. Their success shows that waste reduction in any type of community is possible, and is a testament to every student, faculty and staff member who made these accomplishments happen.” More than 2.7 million college students and staff across more than 150 campuses competed to reduce their waste footprint through minimization efforts by donating, composting and recycling more than 30.7 million pounds of waste. As a result, they kept more than 105 million single-use plastic containers out of landfills and prevented the release of 23,174 metric tons equivalent of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, equal to avoiding the annual emissions from 5,515 cars.  Winners from each category include:  Zero Waste Category    ● Large campus: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor    **No small or medium campuses named in this category for the 2024 competition.  Food Organics Category    ● Small campus: Aquinas College, Michigan    ● Medium campus: Loyola Marymount University, California    ● Large campus: Kent State University, Ohio
