The Rhodes 19

An uncommonly enduring one-design

From Issue   October 2021

T he Rhodes 19 is a daysailer with a strong and enduring history as a competitive one-design. It began life soon after the end of World War II as a wooden centerboarder designed by Philip Rhodes and called the Hurricane. It didn’t catch on back then: there was only one fleet, at Greenwich Cove, Connecticut, and it soon faded. The design resurfaced, however, in 1947, when the Southern Massachusetts Yacht Racing Association (SMYRA), seeking a new one-design class, commissioned the Palmer Scott Yard of New Bedford to finish out a fleet of bare Hurricane hulls, fitting them with keels rather than the originally specified centerboards. The new boats also had aluminum masts. Renamed the SMYRA class, a fleet developed on Buzzards Bay and around Martha’s Vineyard.

In the 1950s, when fiberglass was gaining favor as a boatbuilding material, a company called Marscot Plastics took a class-sanctioned mold from a SMYRA-class boat. Marscot later joined forces with American Boat Building of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and George O’Day, a gifted sailor from Marblehead who at the time was importing molded wooden dinghies from England. The fiberglass SMYRA became popular, and by 1958 O’Day had sole proprietorship of the boat’s production. That year he obtained Rhodes’s approval to rename the design “Rhodes 19,” and he immediately sold 50 of them; the first Rhodes 19 in Marblehead, sail No. 41, went to Dr. Randal Bell of the town’s Corinthian Yacht Club. Through the 1960s, sales skyrocketed and fleets were established in various locales—including Marblehead’s Fleet 5. The first national championship took place in 1963, and the first meeting of a new national class association was held at the Larchmont (New York) Yacht Club in 1965.

O’Day was a particularly skilled, even fearless, downwind sailor. He gained his racing chops in a hand-me-down Starling Burgess-designed 14’ cat-rigged Brutal Beast in Marblehead. He was not afraid to push his boat to the limit—and beyond. On one particularly eventful July day in 1942, having graduated from Brutal Beasts, he capsized his 24’ C. Raymond Hunt-designed 110-class sloop, VINCEMUS, under spinnaker. He was inspired in his downwind sailing by the great British dinghy sailor, designer, builder, and author Uffa Fox, who pioneered the concept of planing in dinghies. Years after his formative years in Marblehead, O’Day would establish his eponymous boatbuilding company and join forces with Fox, who designed the now-ubiquitous O’Day Daysailer. The Daysailer is a step down in size, in the early O’Day fleet, from the Rhodes 19.

american 19 sailboat

Dr. Randal Bell brought the first Rhodes 19, sail No. 41, to Marblehead in the 1950s. Sales of the boat skyrocketed through the 1960s.

O’Day’s foundation years in his Brutal Beast and 110 gave rise to a sailing—and sailing-industry—legend: he would go on to collect national championships in several different classes, including the 210, Firefly, Jollyboat, and International 14. He also won gold at the Pan American Games in 1958, gold again in the 1960 Olympics at Rome in the 5.5-Meter class, and he served in the afterguards of the winning AMERICA’s Cup crews in 1962 (WEATHERLY, designed by Rhodes) and 1967 (INTREPID, designed by Olin Stephens). He founded the O’Day Company in 1958 and built more than 30,000 fiberglass-hulled boats that would bring the sport of sailing into the financial reach of the middle class—and in the process change the face of sailing at Marblehead and beyond. Uncounted kids in Marblehead and elsewhere learned to sail in the company’s Widgeon-class sloop (a Bob Baker–designed 12-footer of refined shape and proportion); Marblehead’s Frostbite fleet sailed in tiddly O’Day Interclubs for many years, and the Daysailer model remains popular on the New England used-boat market to this day. The Rhodes 19, however, has endured in popularity like no other O’Day boat. Most of the one-design fleets at Marblehead have diminished in number since the 1980s, but the Rhodes 19 fleet remains strong.

Facing rising materials costs and a poor economy, O’Day had discontinued production of the Rhodes 19 by 1980. That could have been the end of the class, but its officers kept calm and carried on for the next four years, through fits and starts with new potential builders. In 1984 Stuart Marine, a company set up by a Rhodes 19 sailor, Stuart Sharaga, for the express purpose of building the class, turned out the first of its Rhodes 19s.

Jim Taylor, a Marblehead-based naval architect, developed the production methods and tooling that allowed Stuart to turn out quality boats at a profit. One of these early Stuart boats was displayed at the Corinthian Yacht Club during the 1985 national championship and was roundly applauded by the fleet cognoscenti. Stuart boats did not replace the O’Day ones: although a Stuart model won the nationals in 1995, 1996, and 1997, an O’Day won in 1998, and the two models remain competitive with each other to this day. Kim Pandapas, a former Fleet 5 president and current scorer, noted in a 2010 Marblehead Reporter interview, “The old ones can be restored to peak competitiveness.” Pandapas sails an O’Day-built Rhodes 19, sail No. 982.

The list price of a new Stuart-built keel model is $39,800; classic O’Day examples routinely appear on Craigslist in the $5,000 range, and commonly require new floor timbers, brightwork refurbishing, and hull and deck paint. There is also a long-popular cruising version of the design, called the Mariner; it is fitted with a small cabin rather than the Rhodes 19’s low-profile cuddy. O’Day built many Mariners, and Stuart continues the tradition.

american 19 sailboat

The Rhodes 19 carries 175 sq ft of sail on a 27′10″ mast. An outboard motor of up to 6 hp can also be carried for daysailing.

U nlike some higher-performing one-designs, the Rhodes 19 has comfortable bench seating and, with its varnished mahogany coaming and well-proportioned cuddy, has good protection from spray. Sailing the boat doesn’t require excessive physical exertion, which makes it a level playing field for sailors of all ages. Many teams are composed of husbands and wives; one skipper about five years ago retired from the helm at age 84.

I raced Rhodes 19s as a kid, beginning in the late 1970s. My brother Frank and I would ride our bicycles on Saturday mornings from our home in Salem, Massachusetts, to the Boston Yacht Club in the adjacent town of Marblehead. There, we’d meet our mentor, Dick Welch, a Rhodes 19 sailor, who would assign us to a boat in need of crew. We bounced between the Rhodes 19 and Etchells 22 fleets, mostly, with an occasional foray into the Lightning, 210, or Town Class fleets, until we eventually landed full-time slots in competing gold-hulled Rhodes 19s. Mine was called TRISCUIT and was skippered by Davis Noble. Frank’s was SAFFRON, sailed by the husband-and-wife team of Peter and Debbie deWolfe. With Frank, then 15 years old, as crew, SAFFRON won the nationals in Chicago in 1978. Those were heady days for us, and especially for Frank, with that victory. But it wasn’t until much later that I came to really appreciate the significance and brilliance of the Rhodes 19 as a pure sailboat.

Lately I’ve been lingering on advertisements for used O’Day models. It has been many years since I sailed a Rhodes 19, but the mechanics of sailing this boat are muscle memory for me. In its basic form, the boat is a wholesome daysailer with a form-stable hull and iron-ballasted fin keel—although there is a less-popular centerboard model, too. The off-the-shelf rigging is quite simple, but the fractional rig, along with fine-tweaking with the addition of a mainsheet traveler, twings, barber haulers, cunningham, jib-luff tensioner, and adjustable jib leads—all led to a control console—give incremental speed advantages and keep the competition in this fleet hotter than one might expect.

american 19 sailboat

The standard Rhodes 19 rig is quite simple, though numerous sail controls, including a jib-luff tensioner, cunningham, twings, Barber hauler, and traveler can be added to increase competitiveness.

I recall their light-air performance, which was aided by bringing the aftermarket Harken traveler well to windward and easing the mainsheet. Conversely, in heavier breezes the traveler was let down and the sheet strapped in tight, with the boom brought to centerline and the top batten parallel to the boom. Hiking straps along each bench seat allowed us to keep the boat flat in those conditions, though the iron ballast gave plenty of reassurance if we eased up on the effort.

american 19 sailboat

Three Rhodes 19s ghost downwind under spinnaker in a regular-season contest of the Marblehead Racing Association.

The competitive boats looked like Harken catalogs. The stock layout had two long molded fiberglass seats that served as flotation chambers, but the added Harken traveler was mounted across these, just ahead of the helm station, dividing the cockpit. The console bar, studded with cam cleats, was typically slung under the after edge of the cuddy, with the sail controls within easy reach of the crew. The foredeck was spacious and the hull relatively stable, making end-for-ending the spinnaker pole, while jibing, a relative breeze. Spinnakers were typically launched and retrieved from the cockpit.

I sailed a different Rhodes 19 during the week in those days, too. This one had been a donation to the sailing camp where I taught for several years, and that boat had not been fitted out for racing. With its simple cockpit layout and sheeting, it provided a great contrast to the tricked-out racing version on which I spent my Saturday afternoons. It could comfortably carry six adults, and I recall one of my colleagues camp-cruising in it a few times with his wife and child. Indeed, a proper boom tent fitted over the cockpit of a Rhodes 19 would really open up the boat’s range.

american 19 sailboat

One of the appealing features of the Rhodes 19 is that it does not require excessive physical exertion to be competitive. Some crews are composed of three generations of the same family.

Jim Taylor noted two more reasons for the Rhodes 19’s enduring popularity. First, “the boat is really well suited to intergenerational sailing, so that in addition to the husband-and-wife crews, there are lots of parent-child teams, too.” The second reason he noted is that that these “underpowered 40-or-more-year-old boats with fat bows and bad keels are drawing former college sailors who are accustomed to, and enjoy, sailing boats that are all equally slow. The competition continues right to the finish line.”

american 19 sailboat

The 2014 NOOD (National Offshore One Design) Regatta at Marblehead, Massachusetts, saw a healthy fleet of Rhodes 19s. The class has flourished at Marblehead for more than 50 years.

The Rhodes 19 remains well represented in Marblehead. In fact, the nationals were held there this past summer; Steve Clancy and Marty Gallagher from the south shore of Massachusetts won the event. And No. 41, the boat that started it all in Marblehead, is back in town. Marblehead resident Peter Sorlien found her located in New York City and for sale on Craigslist.

Very enjoyable and informative. Thank you

Steve Clancy was actually the skipper of the Rhodes 19 2021 National Championship. I was his crew. His brother, Chris Clancy, competed with his own boat.

Thanks, Marty, for providing the correct identity of your skipper. The correction has been made to the text. —Ed.

We were helping run the Navy Regatta in Corpus Christi, Texas, back in 1995 and Skipper’s friend Anne entered her Rhodes 19. For the regatta it was a requirement that all boats carry at least one military crew on board. We assigned our friend Chuck to Anne’s boat; Chuck had experience sailing from his time at the Naval Academy and several Newport-Bermuda races. Anne and Chuck won the overall event, from a fleet of over 50 boats!

Just build a dodger and boom tent for a full-keel Rhodes 19 that now lives in St.Thomas and I sail an O’Day Mariner 2+2

What a great article. It would interesting to hear about the current Rhodes 19 production team led by owner Dave Whittier in Maine.

I am in the process of buying a Mariner 19 from Dave Whittier at Stuart Marine. Spoke to him the other day. He was on a ski lift in Utah. Said the powder was good. Too funny. I’ll be bringing the boat to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia where the missus and I are relocating to. Twenty years on the West Coast, it’s time to get closer to New England my birthplace. Now, I have the boat, I should probably find a house to live in. I think the v-berth may be too tight for a lengthy stay. Had to get the boat first, it’s important to set one’s priorities, eh. Happy sailing everyone!

Review of the O'Day Mariner 19 Sailboat

Ahunt/Wikimedia CC 2.0

For over 40 years, the 19-foot Mariner sailboat has been a popular daysailer. Based on the hull of the fast, stable Rhodes 19, the Mariner added a small cabin and other features. Built by O'Day from 1963 through 1979, and currently, by Stuart Marine, the Mariner was marketed as a family daysailer.

As one of the first affordable, trailerable fiberglass sailboats, the Mariner has been popular on lakes and protected bays every since. With its roomy cockpit, wide-beamed stability, and easy sailing characteristics, the Mariner deserves its reputation and is still among the best general-purpose sailboats of its size.

  • Excellent boat for learning to sail and for family daysailing
  • Stable and handles well if wind or waves kick up
  • Very large cockpit provides comfortable sailing for 4 to 6 crew
  • Solid and well constructed; older boats have held up well
  • Self-righting and positive flotation
  • Cabin is useful for daysailing but cramped for sleeping aboard for long
  • Older boats susceptible to leaks in centerboard locker (if abused by previous owners)
  • Early models lacked self-bailing cockpits

Specifications

  • Length overall: 19 feet 2 inches
  • Beam: 7 feet
  • Draft: keelboat: 3 feet 3 inches - centerboard up: 10 inches - centerboard down: 4 feet 11 inches
  • Empty weight: keelboat: 1435 lbs. - centerboard: 1305 lbs.
  • Sail area (main and fractional jib): 185 sqft
  • Mast height (deck-stepped): 27 feet 10 inches
  • Rudder: keelboat: fixed - centerboard: kick-up
  • Recommended outboard engine: 2-6 HP
  • MSRP $24,000 depending on options - widely available used (NADA Marine Guide average retail price for 1977 models: $2,110)
  • Parts readily available for older boats, plus information from owners and class associations

Review of the Mariner 19 Sailboat

In the 1950s the Rhodes 19 was a popular wooden racing and daysailing sailboat. In 1963 Olympic gold-medal sail racer George O'Day bought the hull design, redesigned the topsides with a small cabin, and began producing one of the first affordable fiberglass family sailboats, the Mariner 19. While still producing a keel version, O'Day offered a centerboard option that improved trailer launching and allowed the Mariner to sail up to a beach.

The Mariner rapidly became a popular club one-design racer but also a good family boat seen widely on lakes and bays. By 1979 O'Day had produced almost 3800 Mariners - a huge number for any one model - and after O'Day discontinued the Mariner to focus on larger cruising sailboats, Spindrift and then Stuart Marine continued building the Mariner. The Mariner is still being built - probably the longest continuous production run of any sailboat model ever.

In the late 1960s and 1970s, design changes increased the Mariner's popularity for family sailing. The 2+2 model added two more berths in the cabin, for a total of four, although the cabin really is too cramped to call this boat a cruiser. (Sleeping aboard is more like backpack camping.) The cockpit length was increased to the transom, making a much larger space than in most boats of this size.

The current model includes nonskid on deck and the cockpit seats, all control lines led to the cockpit, positive flotation, and a kick-up rudder on the centerboard model that allows the boat into very shoal waters. With its wide beam and fractional jib that reduces heeling, the Mariner is stable and safe to sail in most conditions.

Virtually all Mariner owners say they'd buy one again - they have no regrets. The features most commonly cited are its stability ("virtually untippable"), its oversized cockpit (where you spend most of your time anyway), and how easily it can be launched (even on a shallow boat ramp).

Perhaps most important, the Mariner is very forgiving of the sailor's mistakes - and thus is an excellent beginning boat. The few complaints of Mariner owners focus on the cramped interior, where the cabin roof is too low for taller people to sit on the settees without bumping your head.

Good Mariners can readily be found on the used market. There are more likely to be problems with an old trailer (rust, wear and tear) than the fiberglass boat itself unless it was abused by a previous owner. For a new owner, The Mariner Class Association offers many benefits, including boat information, sailing tips, sources for parts, and a newsletter.

If you're interested in a small sailboat with a bigger cabin for pocket cruising, check out the West Wight Potter 19 - an outstanding small sailboat. If you’re thinking about a trailerable sailboat like the Potter 19, remember that one of the great advantages is the ability to take it easily to other sailing destinations, such as heading to the Florida Keys in the winter.

Here’s an inexpensive, effective way to control your tiller if you have to let go for a moment while sailing. Need a new outboard motor for your small sailboat? Check out the great new propane-powered outboards from Lehr. If you own a trailer for your boat, be sure you maintain it adequately both to keep it working into the future but to stay safe when using it.

American 18

What are your thoughts on an American 18? I am looking to sell my Hunter 22 and move down in boat size. I like the American 18. It is a very simplistic boat. I like the larger cockpit and the ease of setup and sailing. I sail in the James River and am looking for something I can single hand easier. Or is there something else I should be looking for?

american 19 sailboat

It looks like a nice boat. American 18 Similar to a Lightning 19' but hopefully simpler. I'm just not sure how easy it will be to single hand when the wind pipes up. Boats like this can rely a lot on crew weight and placement if there is any wind. In light winds it looks like it would be fun.

Go for the American! I learned to sail on an American 14-6 about 10 years ago. It is BY FAR the MOST stable 14 foot boat around (aside from a catamaran). The 14-6 can be singlehanded with ease. I've sailed it with my two toddlers aboard. I was able to manage both boat and toddlers safely in modest conditions. I imaging that the larger version (American 18) would by more stable that the version that I learned on. Good luck.

american 19 sailboat

Go for it That's a pretty conservative sailplan for an 18-ft. boat. For comparison, at 19 feet, a Flying Scot has 191 sq. ft., and the Lightning has 177. You should be fine singlehanding on all by the breeziest days. Kurt

Thanks for posting the link. I should have done that. Dog, I have actually looked at that boat as I like the thought of the training wheels. The marina I sail out of is in my neighborhood and rather narrow at the ramp and around the slips. It would be close as to getting in and out. jnorton, How was the constuction? I have yet to see one other than on the web. I have read where it is hand laid fiberglass and the backing plates are metal instaed of wood. I looked at the Hunter 170. The construction with the plastics looks horrible. The one boat I looked at I almost put my fingers thru the deck. Thanks for the input

I'm not an expert when it comes to craftsmanship and construction, but I believe the construction is VERY strong. Here is why I have this opinion: --The fleet of park district boats that I have rented from for years are often rented by folks who do not care for the boats terribly well. It's nothing malicious, but when you do not own the boat yourself, you're not going to take care of it as if it was your own. --The boats are often dragged up onto the beach to rig and de-rig. --The lake is rather shallow in spots. The boats often sail up onto the shallows and scrape bottom. The retractable centerboard is bent every which way in these cases. --Speaking of the centerboard, the boat is righted by standing on the centerboard with your full weight. --Don't mistake this last point as suggesting the boat is tippy. IT'S MOST STABLE. I've capsized the boat only one time (and remember this is the American 14-6). This was on purpose as the very first activity of my sailing instruction class. To right the boat, at 180 pounds, I stood on the centerboard. --When I started sailing these boats ~10 years ago, the park district had a fleet of 3-4 American 14-6's and 2-3 smaller CL-11's. Over the years, the smaller boats have gone away somewhere and the district has acquired a fleet of 6 American 14-6's. Most newly acquired boats are obtained used from somewhere. Some arrive with nicks and dings. --These nicks and dings, combined with the renters' abuses, cause the boats to lose chunks of fiberglass over time. This damage generally goes without repair for a while. The boats still sail fine. When a boat gets bad enough, usually a not too cosmetic fiberglass repair is performed. The boats hold up just fine. I suspect with a caring owner, the boats would remain in great shape. So, the park district likes these boats. They are great for sailing instruction--have jib and main, are STABLE, and fun! You need to know that they are NOT high performance. But they are MOST easy to singlehand and since you are so close to the water it's a fun ride. I am disappointed with the jib sheet leads. It seems the sheets are led so that the side stays are smack dab in the way of the ideal jib lead. I was taught to run the sheets inside of the stays, so that's what I do. I've seen other instructors lead the sheets outside. Neither is ideal. I've improvised temporarily with an arm or paddle to alter the sheeting angle. Even with the American 14-6, I've actually STOOD on the bow to tinker with the headsail.

Thanks for the info. The boat sounds very solid. I am not looking for a racer or such. Just a stable family type boat. My wild days are behind me. A cold beer, fine cigar and lite winds are fine with me. Thanks again.

‍ Key Takeaways

  • Catalina and J/Boats are proud of their American standard of creating sailboats
  • Sailboats made in the US follow a strict consistency to craftsmanship and performance
  • Many US branded sailboats rival top competitors across the world
  • There are various reasons why many sailors believe American made sailboats are best
  • The US has a long history of sailing and you could say it is in their blood

‍ The United States has some of the best sailboats in the sailing world. But what sailboats are made in the USA?

Some of the most popular sailboat brands made in the US are Catalina Yachts, J/Boats, and Hinckley. Other top US made sailboat brand companies include Island Packet Yachts and Tartan Yachts. The US is known for its robust sailing manufacturing and rich maritime history.

In my experience, casual sailors or those wanting to explore more can find quality boats that are made in the US. Many of the boats made in the US have developed an outstanding reputation with some lasting over five decades.

‍ Top 10 Sailboats Made in the USA

A lot of boaters want to know exactly where their sailboat was created. Many favor a boat that was made from an American company that sets an industry standard versus cheaper comparable overseas. Not to say that all boats made elsewhere are bad but consistency is key in the US.

In a lot of situations buying an American made sailboat is best for those that live near the company. It makes it a thousand times easier to order parts or to get first hand knowledge of your boat when the company that built it is right around the corner.

Catalina

The Catalina lineup offers plenty of options to choose from when it comes to casual sailing boats or yachts. The company is located in Largo, Florida and has sustained a good reputation for their durable and performance on the water.

Since 1969 they have become America’s largest sailboat builder. They also rival top competitors such as Nautor’s Swan for the sailboat market.

J/Boats

J/Boats are unique and set themselves apart from other types of sailboats like their J/22 and J/70 models. They have been established in Newport, Rhode Island since 1977.

They have everything you can think of for sailboats with the customer in mind. These luxury and sleek designs that they offer help to combat anything the water has in store.

Hinckley Yachts

Hinckley 35

Hinckley had their sailing origins date back to 1928 in Southwest Harbor, Maine but is now headquartered in Rhode Island. Many sailors are drawn to the craftsmanship and luxury attributes of these sailboats.

The Bermuda 40 for example are timeless classics that use high quality materials. Many of their designs have proven to be fan favorites.

Island Packet Yachts

Island Packet Yacht

Island Packet has been aiming towards making sailboats in Largo, FLorida that are treasured among various generations. Their IP 349 and IP 439 models are some of the best sailboats you can find on the market.

Sailors love these American made sailboats. These are typically due to their reliability and comfort you can achieve while exploring blue water areas.

Tartan Yachts

Tartan Yacht

Tartan has been around since 1960 in Ohio and has developed beloved sailboats. Their most popular models are the 3400 and 4000 but they also have new classics in the making.

They even have a program where you can bring your old Tartan and talk with the team to see about restoring your old classic for a given price. This allows you to hang onto your treasured sailboat and potentially one day have it restored to its former glory.

Morris Yachts

Morris Yacht

Morris has roots in Maine around 1972. They are owned by Hinckley and they make some excellent modern models for sailboats.

The M36 and M42 are classics that many agree are excellent options for any level of sailor. They feature other models that are geared towards larger families or you are wanting more living space throughout the boat.

Viking Yacht Company

Viking Yacht

Viking is based in New Jersey and has some of the best yachts you can possibly imagine. Their 44C and 48C are some of their best moderate sized models but they get even crazier with their 92C offering.

If you want a true American experience on a yacht you cannot go wrong with anything Viking has in store. They have a wide range of models to suit your needs for luxury on the ocean.

Oyster Yachts

Oyster Yacht

Oyster Yachts have been around for over 50 years and have dominated the Rhode Island area for yachts. One appealing feature that stands out compared to other sailboat brands is that you can customize a majority of your boat online before having to pick it up. Oyster has a boat for you that is able to handle blue water capabilities and luxury.

Broward Yachts

Broward Yacht

Broward is actually a superyacht builder that often gets lumped into the sailboat category since they are luxury boats that are blue water capable. This shipyard is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and has designed over 300 yachts to date since 1948.

In fact they earn the business of sailboat owners that are on the fence about other sailboat brands that are looking for a yacht. They are a one of kind yacht brand that deserves a shout out from the sailboat community.

Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler is not exactly a modern sailboat either but is a blue water cruiser that is perfect for any situation out on the water. These boat builders from Florida helped make the perfect boat for fishing or cruising in blue water territories. You can find various models such as the Vantage or Conquest to help fit your blue water needs.

Are Sailboats Made Better in the US?

Quality and performance are very important for a sailboat brand to remain in business. Many boat brands in the US have been around for several decades and you do not do that by accident. Boat builders have to create something special for a good price or depending on the market value.

Rich History

The US has a rich maritime history that bodes well with their craftsmanship and dedication to making the perfect sailboat. Many companies such as Catalina and Island Packet have established themselves as some of the best in the US that many boat owners would agree with.

What Makes a Brand Unique

Many sailboat brands offer various models to cater to a wider range of buyers. These could be a cruiser series or sport series for example. Some even consider it their house on the water as long as it is seaworthy.

The design team will also need to factor in living space and effortless performance to be considered a luxury sailboat. If a brand offers a lot of options to fit many needs then that boat brand is one step ahead of the competition.

Rivals Across the Globe

It is important to understand that there are other top quality sailboat brands in the world and that some American made brands rival those found in France and Sweden. Nautor’s Swan and Dufor are to name a few.

Your Sailing Desires and Budget

Claiming that one brand is better than another is simply based on market opinion and your current situation. Your budget and sailing goals will ultimately help shape what you believe is the best sailboat or whether or not the US has the best ones period.

Why is Sailing Popular in the US?

Sailing has been popular around various parts of the world for centuries. As technology and attention to detail has evolved over the years it has created the foundation for the love of sailing.

Florida is Home to Sailing

Many boat builders aim to make the best boats in places where sailing should thrive. Florida for example is the highest rate of boat owners in the US. You will likely see many brands of boats especially a French brand or two.

People Love the Water

There are roughly 12 million registered boats in the US for recreational purposes. There are many purposes for boats on the water such as racing or fishing. A sailboat will help you cover a lot of those activities on the water and Americans tend to spend a lot of time on the ocean.

Recreational use is a driving force for Americans that want to spend more time on the water. Sailboats are likely the reason for most of these numbers especially in parts of Maine or further up the east coast of the US.

The Boys In The Boat: What Happened To Joe Rantz After The 1936 Olympics

  • Joe Rantz, depicted in The Boys in the Boat, worked for Boeing for 35 years after graduating from the University of Washington.
  • Rantz, who had a troubled childhood, was determined to give his five children a positive and stable life.
  • Following his retirement from rowing, Rantz had a long and fulfilling life until his death in 2007.

The Boys in the Boat tells the triumphant true story of the American men's rowing team, including Joe Rantz, at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games. Callum Turner played Rantz in the 2023 biographical sports drama based on Daniel James Brown's 2013 book of the same name. As depicted in the movie, Rantz was a working-class student and rower at the University of Washington who was chosen to join the men's eight team for the Olympics, along with seven of his teammates at the college. Out of all the rowers, though, The Boys in the Boat focused on Rantz the most.

The Boys in the Boat , starring Callum Turner as Joe Rantz, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video or MGM+.

Aside from Turner as Rantz, some other central members of the cast of The Boys in the Boat included Joel Edgerton as Al Ulbrickson, Jack Mulhern as Don Hume, and Peter Guinness as George Pocock. The entire eight-person men's rowing team was featured in the film, but as mentioned above, Rantz was the star of The Boys in the Boat , given his distressing upbringing and inspiring persistence. The actor's star power paid off as many of The Boat and the Boat 's reviews claimed that Turner's performance was one of the movie's highlights.

Joe Rantz Worked For Boeing After Graduating From The University Of Washington

Rantz graduated with a chemical engineering degree.

After winning the gold medal in the men's eight at the 1936 Summer Olympics, Joe Rantz continued competing in the University of Washington senior varsity eights. Rantz even went on to win the United States National Intercollegiate Rowing Association title in 1937. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations , Rantz graduated in 1939 with a chemical engineering degree. His prestigious degree from the University of Washington later helped the Olympic rower secure a job at the Boeing Corporation for 35 years.

Did Joe Rantz Marry Joyce Simdars?

The couple was married up until their deaths.

Joe Rantz married his college girlfriend, Joyce, played by Hadley Robinson in The Boys in the Boat , on May 27, 1939, the same year he graduated from the University of Washington. By all accounts, their marriage was a happy one as they stayed together until they died in the 2000s. Additionally, the couple ultimately had five children together in the years following their wedding.

Following his retirement from rowing, Joe Rantz committed himself to a stable job that could help him provide for his family.

Since Rantz had a troubled childhood, as depicted in George Clooney's The Boys in the Boat , he was determined to give his kids a positive and stable life. His mother died when he was a toddler, and his father's next wife treated Rantz quite poorly. His father and stepmother abandoned him when he was a teenager, and Rantz was forced to provide for himself and put himself through school. Given his rough upbringing, Rantz wanted to give his children a better life, and he seemingly did.

The Boys In The Boat: What Happened To Don Hume After The 1936 Olympics

Jack Mulhern stars as Don Hume, one of the rowers in The Boys in the Boat what happened to the athlete in real life after the Olympics in Berlin?

What Else Joe Rantz Did Before His Death In 2007

Following his retirement from rowing, Joe Rantz committed himself to a stable job that could help him provide for his family. By all accounts, it seems he worked for Boeing for most of his life. It's unclear when he settled into retirement, and Rantz's other adventures are unknown as he lived a pretty quiet life. His wife, Joyce, died in 2002 after 63 years of marriage. Rantz died a few years later, on September 10, 2007, at the age of 93, from congestive heart failure. So, all in all, following the events of the 2023 movie The Boys in the Boat , Rantz evidently had a long and fulfilling life.

Verdict in Donald Trump's trial a sham or justice? It depends on which boat you are in.

Democrats and republicans have far different takeaways on the fairness of the verdict in donald trump's trial. but both sides find a way to capitalize on it..

american 19 sailboat

If a reporter were assigned to write about the maiden voyage of a state-of-the-art luxury cruise ship, likelier than not the story would come back describing "pillowy white-capped waves dancing atop the clear blue ocean while the voyagers basked in the refreshing salt spray that was pushed along by a gentle breeze" or something like that.

But if, heaven forbid, there were to be a shipwreck, look for the news coverage to be dominated by descriptions of "desperate survivors in the icy, shark-infested waters swimming frantically toward the turbulently bobbing life rafts on the raging open sea."

Same ocean, same people. The difference rests on whether one is comfortably aboard ship or faces a fate conditioned on the durability of inflatable untethered watercraft.

That metaphor, though not original, came to mind as the predictable reactions by political figures and partisan pundits to Thursday's guilty verdict in the trial of former President Donald Trump began flooding social media platforms and vacuumed up all the available time on cable news.

For those on the left, justice was delivered by a clear-eyed jury of ordinary citizens who did their duty to follow the evidence and uphold the rule of law.

From the right came cries of "sham" and "kangaroo court." The prosecutors, the messaging went, were Democratic dupes bent on political retribution and the jurors blindly lapped it all up and regurgitated the predetermined result.

The one thing on which both sides did appear to agree was that the voters in the Nov. 5 election will have the final say in the rematch between President Joe Biden and his immediate predecessor. They did not, however, agree on what that final say might be.

It's fair to support the idea that the forces on both sides of the justice/sham divide had prepared reactions for either way the jury decided. Some might have even had their talking points ready ever since the indictment was handed up months ago.

Another thing both sides seemed to agree on was that the verdict was good for business, at least their business. Of course, their business is politics. And politics, like pretty much every business, runs on money. So it's not surprising that politicians of all stripes rushed to capitalize on the Trump trial's outcome.

'Speechless': Swing state voters react to Donald Trump's guilty verdict

A little more than an hour after the verdict was announced, the campaign of Democratic U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of Brownsville blasted out a mass text touting Trump's 34-count conviction and noted that his Republican opponent, former U.S. Rep. Mayra Flores, is a supporter of the former president. Gonzalez ends with a plea to "chip in" some money in what is expected to be a hard-fought race.

A short time later, the Texas Republican Party hit send on a "Dear Fellow Patriots" email calling the jury's decision "a stark reminder that the left is relentless in their pursuit to weaponize the justice system against anyone who stands in their way. We cannot allow this injustice to prevail."

Embedded in that email was not one, not two, but three red buttons linking to the state GOP's page that encourages people to contribute money or, better yet, set up recurring donations.

Biden's campaign late Thursday also put out a plea for cash with "Let's keep Trump out of the White House" in the email subject line. The message didn't expressly mention the trial's outcome, just that "the stakes have never been higher" in a presidential election. Such subtlety had been jettisoned by Friday morning.

Whispers, tension, suspense: What happened in court as judge read Trump's guilty verdict

The second-day email called the likely GOP presidential nominee "a convicted felon" and warned that "Donald Trump's supporters are fired up and likely setting fundraising records for his campaign."

As Biden himself might have said, "That's not hyperbole, folks."

About the same time Biden's email hit, the Trump campaign boasted that it had hauled in a record $34.8 million in small contributions and that the pace of donations had temporarily crashed the website. That much cash in that short amount of time can buy any candidate whose campaign ship just hit an iceberg a pretty sturdy lifeboat.

Greater Cincinnati celebrates its 129th German Day at Hofbrauhaus Newport

NEWPORT, Ky. (WXIX) - Food, beer, and music filled Newport to commemorate Greater Cincinnati’s 129th German Day celebration at Hofbrauhaus Sunday.

The German-American Citizens League hosted the festivities to honor local German heritage and attendees shared why it is important to the area. According to the organization, it is one of the oldest German day celebrations in the U.S.

“It’s important to celebrate the German heritage because people of the German background are the largest ethnic ancestry group in the Greater Cincinnati area,” said President of the German-American Citizens League Don Heinrich Tolzmann.

The annual day is also important to Tolzmann because German culture can be found throughout the area.

“You can find influences of German heritage wherever you go - in the food and drink in the architecture, in the festivals.”

Tolzmann said the German-American Citizens League was founded in 1895 and they currently have 40 member societies in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The Hofbrauhaus celebration included a keg tapping, German beer, food and raffles. All of the funds go towards the German Heritage Museum.

“It’s a great day for everybody to come out and celebrate a heritage that has contributed a lot to the Greater Cincinnati Area,” Tolzmann says.

With the wind metaphorically and literally beneath their back, premier sailors from across the globe will attempt to conquer the Roucas-Blanc Marina in Marseille, France, this summer. The marina located on the Mediterranean Sea, was selected for its favorable winds and expansive seascapes.

Among the United States representatives will be Stanford alum Hans Henken. Henken competes in the men's skiff “49er” division named after the two-person 4.99-meter hull-length dinghy (boat) race he specializes in. He and his teammate Ian Barrows are currently the second-ranked pairing in the world.

Here’s everything to know about the sailing event and the San Francisco-born star ready to compete.

What is Olympic sailing?

Before humans commercially traversed earth's oceans via plane the only way to cross the world was by boat. Naturally, the world's most famous ancient sporting event features a sailing competition. There are 10 different types of Olympic sailing events and all are conducted in a “fleet race” format. This means that while some professional sailing events are purely time-based, all the boats race simultaneously against each other at the Games, with the first to cross the assigned finish line being named the winner.

In sprint competitions, there are multiple events under the umbrella of "track and field." These separate events are different in length of run, gender of who's running, and even type of event (hurdling, javelin, etc.) Similarly, for sailing, there are different types of races depending on various factors such as gender, boat size, amount of people operating the boat, etc. Each event has opening series races that involve all of the competitors. These are preliminary races to the medal race. Henken's 49er class has 12 opening series races with scores given to the top three finishers. After the initial preliminary races the top three boats earn qualification for the medal race where it’s a race to the finish line for hardware.

A look at Hans Henken's career

Henken was born and raised in San Francisco and began sailing at 6 years old in a Naples Sabot training boat. In 2008 Henken announced himself to the world by earning a bronze medal in the men's double at the VOLVO Youth World Championships in the 29er class (a smaller dinghy than the 49er). The following year he continued his success by becoming the U23 International Moth World Champion.

Henken attended Stanford from 2011-2018 where he was a member and eventual captain for the school's sailing team. The highlight was his 2013-14 season with the Cardinal which featured 15 first-place finishes across the program that season with Henken captaining. Fast forward just under a decade and Henken was the 2023 49er U.S National Champion while also being a gold medalist at the 2023 Pan American games.

Henken’s path to the Olympics

Henken was selected for the U.S. National Development sailing team in 2008 around the same time he burst onto the scene with the Youth World Championship bronze medal. Since 2013 he has trained and competed with the senior U.S. sailing team. Paris was not Henken's first attempt at Olympic participation. Alongside longtime teammate Judge Ryan he campaigned for both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He finished second and third at those Olympic trials in his favored 49er class just short of making his class.

After eight days of Olympic trial competition in Miami earlier this year, Henken finally secured his spot for the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside new partner Barrows. A lifelong dream of a man who has been at the helm of a boat since before he could do simple mathematics now comes to fruition in Marseille.

Dr Anthony Fauci has ripped a convicted Capitol rioter who was caught on camera repeatedly making faces behind him during Monday’s COVID congressional hearing — calling him out for showing up at his testimony just two weeks after being cut loose from prison.

Fauci responded in an interview Monday night to the antics of Brandon Fellows, an upstate New York chimney repairman who was seated directly behind the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as he testified to Congress about the death threats he received while overseeing the US’s COVID-19 response.

Brandon Fellows, an upstate New York chimney repairman, was caught-on-camera repeatedly pulling faces behind Dr Anthony Fauci during Monday's COVID hearing.

“What’s somebody like that doing at a hearing about COVID?” Fauci told CNN when asked about Fellows’ looming presence behind him.

Fellows’ face-making antics, which quickly caused a stir on social media, eventually led to him being tossed out of the subcommittee hearing by security guards.

As he was being escorted out, Fellows also apparently shouted that Fauci belonged in prison, CNN reported.

Fauci admitted he didn’t hear Fellows yelling, but said it had been brought to his attention that “someone who just got out of jail for being arrested for the January 6 attack on the Capitol” had been sitting behind him.

Fellows wearing a hat and beard sitting on a police motorcycle outside the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Fellows, for his part, took to social media in the immediate aftermath to brag that “things are going well for me here in DC.”

He quickly changed his Facebook cover photo to an image of him making a face behind the infectious diseases expert.

A smirking Fellows was seated directly behind Fauci during his testimony.

“Democrats are hilariously LOSING THEIR MINDS!” he boasted.

“Today marks 2 weeks since being released, I considered this fun, not necessarily an accomplishment, but I’ve been accomplishing a decent amount and having tons of fun the past 2 weeks.”

Brandon Fellows

Fellows was sentenced to just over three years in prison for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, siege at the US Capitol.

He was convicted of one felony count of obstruction of an official proceeding and four misdemeanors after footage showed him entering the Capitol via a broken window and proceeding to the office of Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) to smoke weed.

Fellows made headlines repeatedly in the wake of the riot after declaring his Bumble dating profile had been “blowing up” from his newfound infamy and that he had absolutely “no regrets.”

Continuous Medicaid enrollment during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) led to record enrollment of 94 million individuals and decrease in uninsurance. 1 Since the continuous enrollment provision ended March 31, 2023, approximately 10 million people have lost Medicaid coverage as states began redetermining enrollees’ Medicaid eligibility (unwinding period). 1 Three-quarters of disenrollments occurred for procedural reasons, including incomplete applications, application errors, and inaccurate contact information. 2

As with all American Sail products, the American 18 is constructed of hand-laid fiberglass with positive foam floatation for a durable and safe boat. The wide beam and flat bottom planing hull allow for exceptional performance in a light breeze or in a heavy wind. This boat is designed to sail flat with minimal heel.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
