Honors at Western

Since its founding in 1962, Western’s Honors College allows students to combine the best of a private liberal arts college experience (small classes, interaction with professors and other students, and the opportunity to work on research and creative activities with faculty) with the advantages of a much larger public institution, including a wide variety of majors, outstanding academic facilities, and numerous extra-curricular options.

The Honors College is structured in a way that provides a graduated, on-going experience for students as they engage in increasingly sophisticated work while moving through their Western degree. From captaining our national championship rowing team to editing newspapers to organizing our TEDx event, Western Honors students are campus leaders.

National Recognition

WWU Honors has received recognition as one of the very best in the nation. And, it’s part of Western Washington University, which earns national attention for the overall quality of undergraduate education (U.S. News and World Report, 1998-2021) and top value in public colleges ( Kiplinger’s, 2019 ). Western is also nationally recognized as a leading producer of Student Fulbright Scholars and Peace Corps volunteers, many of whom were WWU Honors Students.

Campus Tour

WWU Campus Tree Tour

WWU is privileged to be the home of dozens of spectacular varieties of trees (the full census runs to more than 70 species). These four tree tours describe some of the more interesting specimens on campus and also provides some history about many of the trees.

The mobile tours are designed to be used with a smartphone or tablet as you walk the tours. Touch the tree images to view tree names and descriptions.

The print tours are designed to be printed and carried with you on the tours. They include maps with numbered markers and descriptions for each tree.

Disclaimer: This project was undertaken by a complete amateur, a geologist without a scrap of formal training in botany. Tree identifications thus rely on imagination, faith and the sources listed below, with the enormously valuable assistance of Randy Godfrey, WWU chief gardener, and his staff, and local self-taught tree authority John Wesselink. However, if it turns out that some identifications are incorrect, no one could be less astonished than me. - Myrl Beck

Virtual tours are a great way to refresh your memory or to preview an on-site tour of WWU.

Do I Really Need to Take a Tour?

At the beginning of your college search, a virtual tour can be a beneficial tool to explore the campus before your visit. When you do visit the campus, be sure to talk to current students about their experiences. A student perspective is a helpful way to gauge your future experience when attending Western Washington University. Already took an on-campus tour? It's inevitable. All of your college tours will blend, and you might forget the appearance of WWU's library, dorms, or cafeteria. Use the virtual tour to jog your memory! With the interactive mapping tool below you can even explore the area surrounding the campus.

Use the resources below to start your virtual tour.

Using the Map

Click and drag the little orange person to a location on the map. Locations with panoramas appear as blue lines or blue dots when moving the orange person. The blue dots are panoramic views that you may swivel. The blue lines are paths that you can navigate along.

Panoramic View

You can "pan" or "swivel" the camera around by clicking on the image and dragging your mouse or finger. If you see a white arrow on the picture, you can click or tap on it to move in the direction of the arrow. This will also update the location of the little orange person on the map so you can get a better sense of where you are and what direction you are facing.

Tour Day- Tuesday, October 15th, 2024

5th grade students exploring Environmental Science building interactive exhibit

Each fall, all fifth graders from participating schools are brought to the WWU campus for a "kick-off" tour. The tour day is a coordinated effort between the university, local school districts, and the community. The tour is an all-day field trip for the students and their teachers and they participate in the following ways:

  • Touring "real" WWU classrooms where professors have opened the doors and provided a view of college education for the 5th graders. Over 125 classrooms and demonstrations have been open to our tour guests.
  • Touring university housing and activity centers where Western students typically live and participate in university offerings.
  • Visiting WWU service centers, so that young students also get a bird's-eye-view of how to navigate a university.
  • Touring the WWU library, a favorite to our 5th graders, to see the educational treasures available to students.
  • Viewing Western's cultural resources; sculptures, art galleries, music, theatre, and dance performances.
  • Lunching on campus with mentors at the Viking Union.
  • Opportunities to meet the university administration.

Common Reads 2023

Each year an author or illustrator is featured during Tour Day. Our 2023 Common Read's Author was Laurie Ann Thompson and her book "Two Truths and a Lie".

A former software engineer, Laurie Ann Thompson now writes for young people to help them understand the world we live in so they can help make it a better place for all. She strives to write nonfiction that encourages imagination and fiction that reflects universal truths. Learn more at  lauriethompson.com .

Volunteer for Tour Day

As part of our Tour Day, many groups of students will be touring the Western campus. We will need to have some experienced adult supervision on campus that day. These adults will be needed as a safety measure to be present on the WWU perimeter, answering questions about locations on campus, helping in emergencies or with problems, maintaining cell-phone communication with the program director to relay needed information, and generally talking with students, acting as ambassadors for the Western campus.

A student mentor guiding a group of students around WWU

Volunteers are requested in late September. All volunteers are required to attend a short orientation for their designated task prior to Tour Day. If you would like to volunteer on Tour Day, please contact  [email protected] .

Thank you in advance for your willingness to help our young students consider college in their future!

Virtual College Week!

During the pandemic, Tour Day was reconfigured into a weeklong online event called College Week! We plan to keep this page available for anyone to use for a virtual experience, or as preparation for the in-person Tour Day visit.
