Which Cruise Line Has the Best Military Discount?

Discover exclusive military discounts on unforgettable cruises with top cruise lines. Find the best deals and set sail with honor and savings.

Book A Cruise Now

Cruising provides a distinctive manner of traveling that lets tourists experience different locations but in comfort with quality services as well. The idea of taking a cruise is exciting to those involved in security service as they provide their own experiences with lasting impressions. In addition, the selection of appropriate cruise lines is vital, and it also gets more complicated with the consideration of military discounts. This article will examine the cruise line offers and identify the cruise line that has the best Military Discount .

List of Cruise Lines that Offer the Best Military Discount

1. carnival cruise line: saluting service members.

Carnival cruise line has supported the military community for over half a century of existence with its lively and colorful mood and various ship routes. The carnival company has special military rates for certain cruises that are offered to eligible personnel at discounted fees. Furthermore, they also extend them to their military spouses and dependents, thus indicating an expanded way of giving respect to the servicemen and women.

All service members, including veterans, those in reserves, and those actively serving in any branch of the U.S. Military, are part of the Carnival Military Cruise Rate. However, such discounts depend on the particular cruise and date of departure; typically, lower rates and onboard credits are provided. Carnival’s commitment to the military community raises the overall experience of service men’s search for tranquility and excitement.

2. Royal Caribbean: Sailing with Savings

Royal Caribbean has a world-class reputation for creating cutting-edge vessels and exploring new exotic places. To appreciate the service contributions of the military personnel, Royal Caribbean has established a military discount program . Qualified veterans are those in active service, reserve, and retired service, as well as US Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard personnel.

Military discounts offered by Royal Caribbean comprise lowered cruise rates and complimentary onboard credit. Military personnel get competitive deals on the constantly updated offerings of this cruise line through the wide pool of their ships. Therefore, Royal Caribbean emerges distinctly because it puts the needs of service members first and foremost in order to add value.

3. Norwegian Cruise Line: Honoring Heroes at Sea

NCL is renowned for its Freestyle Cruising, which gives passengers some liberty during their journey. NCL appreciates military personnel by offering special fares and bonuses. It is available for the Active Duty, Retired, or Honorably discharged members of the US military.

Military discounts in NCL include cheaper cruise fares and onboard credits that allow budget traveling. In this way, the cruise line’s mission to offer memorable vacations is fulfilled, and it shows that it respects the contribution made by the members of the military community.

4. Disney Cruise Line: Magical Discounts for Military Members

Disney Cruise Line is well-known for its family-centric environment and popular characters, but it also recognizes the contributions of soldiers. The cruise line also reciprocates this by offering special military rates on selected cruises. Active and former personnel of the U.S. Military, including the U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and reservists, are eligible members.

The military discounts in Disney Cruise Line would entail reduced fares on certain stateroom categories as well as special prices that are applicable during a particular promotion period. The combination of the family-centered approach and military discounts makes Disney Cruise Line a preferred option, where servicemen can make memorable moments with the closest people.

5. MSC Cruises: Sailing with Gratitude

A global cruise line, which MSC is, acknowledges the significance of paying tribute to military services. Active and retired employees of the US and Canadian Armed Forces, together with their dependent spouses, are eligible for MSC Cruises’ military discount package. Military spouses, for instance, benefit from this comprehensive approach since they get to enjoy these discounts with their families.

As such, MSC Cruises’ military discounts involve lower cruise fares, and there are also times when passengers enjoy onboard credits. The cruise line’s gesture of appreciation to the military community goes hand in hand with its goal of exceptional seafarer pleasures.

Conclusion:

Cruise lines are a good choice when one takes into account the cost of the cruise discount, age bracket, and how well the cruise line takes care of its guests. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, and MSC also demonstrate respect and appreciation for military personnel by offering lower costs and benefits.

Therefore, the best cruise line for military discounts is very much subjective. Through extensive comparisons of the services offered by individual cruise lines, military personnel are able to choose something in appreciation of their efforts for their country, which is both satisfying and pleasant.

Military Discounts for Cruises

Last updated on May 24th, 2024 at 12:49 pm

Military personnel, whether active, retired, or veteran, make many sacrifices to serve their country. As an acknowledgment of these sacrifices, most cruise lines offer some form of discount to members of the military.

The perks from a cruise line for being a member of the military can come in the form of discounts, special rates, or onboard credits, depending on the line.

From knowing the different types of discounts available to understanding the best way to book a cruise, this guide will help you find a cruise that offers military discounts.

Table of Contents

Qualifications For Military Discounts

Military discounts are given to those who qualify, so you must meet certain requirements. While the types of requirements might vary between cruise lines, generally the standards you will need to meet are listed below.

An individual must be classified as one of the following:

1. Active personnel currently serving in the Canadian National Defense, United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserves.

2. Retired from any of the divisions listed above. The definition of “retired” is a person with a minimum of 20 years of service, medically retired or 100% disabled .

3. Veterans with an Honorable Discharge that served a minimum of 2 years, or served 6 months in an active war zone, in any of the United States services listed above.

4. Spouses of actively deployed or deceased military personnel are eligible to book one stateroom as long as the eligible spouse is occupying the stateroom.

To be able to receive a military discount, you must present proper identification. That identification is usually in the form of a United States Uniformed Service white identification card for US military personnel.

For Canadian personnel, it is a white N.D.21 identification card with a red Canadian flag displayed for Canadian National Defense.  You will be asked to present your card at the time of check-in and again at embarkation.

For specific requirements, check the cruise line website that you are interested in sailing with for more details.

How to Find Military Discounts

Finding military discounts for cruises is as simple as logging on to the cruise line’s website or calling the cruise line directly.

The best place for accurate and up-to-date information on military discounts is with the individual cruise line. It may take a bit of your time to research a particular line, but would be worth it to save some money.

Here are some of the cruise lines that offer military discounts:

Norwegian Cruise Line

In November of 2022, NCL launched their first-ever Military Appreciation Program . Designed to benefit active and retired U.S. military members and their spouses, the program has discounts across the company’s 18-ship fleet.

NCL’s program will give eligible military personnel a 10% discount on their cruise fare. This program can be combined with their Free At Sea offer.

Carnival Cruise Military Cruise Deals

Carnival offers reduced rates to military personnel. In addition to that there are deals that are offered in May and November for Memorial and Veteran’s Day.

Some of the offers are for discounted fates, complimentary cabin upgrades and/or onboard credit. Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-764-7419.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Royal will occasionally offer military rates (not a discount) on select bookings throughout the year. The rate might only apply to specific cabins on select sailings.

There are times when the rate can be a very decent 40%, but you will need to do some research for times and ships. For the specifics, it would be best to call the cruise line at 1-866-562-7625 as the website does not offer the information.

MSC Cruises

MSC has offers for active and retired military personnel that are up to 10% off almost all sailings. A 5% discount is offered on interior and ocean-view cabins, while 10% is offered on balcony, suite and MSC Yacht Club staterooms.

On MSC, parents, parents-in-law and dependent children of active and retired military personnel also qualify for the discount. MSC’s Civil Service discount program offers police and firefighters discounts, too.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-833-241-5905.

Princess Cruises

While Princess does not offer a discount, they do offer up to $250 on board credit to active and veteran members of the U.S. and Canadian militaries. The credit can be used on any cruise at any time of the year, so that does make it convenient.

Princess gives out the credit in this manner: $50 for sailings of six days or less, $100 for siblings of 7 to 13 days and $250 for sailings two weeks in length or longer.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-774-6237.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Lines offer military rates on select Disney cruises and are valid for new bookings only. This article will give you information on Disney rates: Disney Cruise Line Military Discounts

As this rate is offered on select cruises, it is best to call the cruise line for assistance with booking at 1-800-951-3532.

Paperwork Needed For Military Discounts

Whatever cruise line you decide to sail with, in order to receive your military discount or credit, you will need to provide the line with proper paperwork.

You will be asked to provide relevant documents that may include:

  • Military or dependent ID
  • Current LES (leave and earnings statement)
  • Copy of retirement papers (Form DD214 or DD256)
  • Proof of Honorable Discharge (Form DD214)

Depending on the cruise line, you may need to provide proof of military service at the time you book your cruise and again at check-in. Plan on carrying those relevant documents with you on embarkation day .

Going Above The Norm

Carnival has always shown appreciation for members of our military. In 2023, Carnival Cruise Lines hosted over 1,500 military appreciation gatherings.

Carnival recently honored military women in special ceremonies during Fleet Week. They have also initiated a Military Appreciation Day across the fleet during North American sailings that take place the week of July 24th.

Several ships in the fleet, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Glory, Carnival Panorama , Carnival Pride, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Mardi Gras, and the new Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Firenze, feature the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge. The bar will soon be added to Carnival Legend .

Recently, Carnival celebrated more than 150 military women aboard the Carnival Conquest during Miami’s first-ever Fleet Week. The ceremony included servicewomen from the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

As a cruise line, Carnival carries more active military members and veterans than any other cruise line.

Final Thoughts

Cruising can be a relaxing vacation option for military members and their families, as it is a way to spend quality time together and a wonderful way to make memories that will last a lifetime.

A cruise takes care of all those everyday chores for you. You have your own lodgings, food is plentiful , varied and cooked for you. No dishes, no housekeeping, no outside distractions.

There is a variety of activities and entertainment onboard to keep you busy, or you can sit and soak up the sun on the deck. A cruise allows you to concentrate on yourself and your family and re-energize.

You're probably already enrolled: How cruise loyalty programs make travel easier, cheaper

which cruise line has best military discount

"Easy Travel” is a ten-part series focusing on how to reduce bumps during vacations, anticipate roadblocks and be ready when things aren’t going your way. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

When Barbara Van Elsen takes a cruise, she packs much less than she used to.

The 70-year-old has sailed her way to the fourth tier of Holland America Line’s Mariner Society loyalty program, which comes with complimentary laundry and pressing service on board, making it easier to travel light.

She has been cruising with the line since 2011 and has sailed for as long as six weeks at a time. Having an easy – and free – way to refresh her wardrobe throughout the trip makes a big difference.

“I always try to just do (a carry-on and small checked bag) if I have to take the plane to the ship, and it really helps a lot with that,” said Van Elsen, who lives in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Free laundry is one of many perks that come with cruise line loyalty programs, which can help streamline travel and save guests money – but not all programs are created equal.

What are the benefits of cruise line loyalty programs?

Cruise line loyalty programs offer members a variety of perks, from before guests board to the time they get off the ship. Each line’s program is different, but the benefits generally get better – and more plentiful – as guests move up the ranks.

Those may include priority embarkation and disembarkation or exclusive access to onboard lounges, according to Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel. Van Elsen said she has received priority access to tender boats, saving her the hassle of a long wait at certain ports.

Passengers can also get amenities that typically cost extra for a lower price. For example, drinks may be included or discounted, which Feldman called “one of the most lucrative benefits,” and members can get deals on Wi-Fi.

Jason Wallace, 43, is an Emerald member of Royal Caribbean International’s Crown & Anchor Society, and said the perk he and his family uses most is a 50% discount on coffee drinks . “I mean, we all grab coffees every morning,” said the real estate agent from Joplin, Missouri, who has cruised often with his wife and two sons.

The line serves complimentary coffee at the main dining room and other venues on board, but premium coffees come at an extra charge (though the discount excludes Starbucks).

Guests may also receive access to reduced cruise fares and other offers unique to loyalty members, said Deborah Banks, a travel advisor and franchise owner at Cruise Planners with her husband Isaiah.

How to qualify for cruise line loyalty programs

Cruise lines typically enroll passengers automatically so they can start gaining loyalty status. “It’s not like you have to sign up for the program,” Banks said. “Most cruise lines, you sail with them one time and you automatically will become a member of their program.”

They are free to join, and guests accumulate loyalty points during each sailing, typically at a rate of one point per night for standard accommodations. “So, if I’m going on a seven-day sailing, I may accumulate seven points,” Banks said.

However, Feldman noted that passengers in “the equivalent of a junior suite or higher” generally earn twice as many points, as do solo travelers in double occupancy cabins who pay a single supplement. Each passenger in a stateroom is eligible to earn points.

The requirements to move up in status vary from line to line:

  • Carnival Cruise Line: Members of Carnival’s Very Important Fun Person Club start at Blue with their first sailing. They move up to Red with their second sailing and 24 points, Gold between 25 and 74 points, Platinum between 75 and 199 points, and Diamond at 200 points or higher.
  • Royal Caribbean: Crown & Anchor Society members start at Gold with 3 points and move up to Platinum with 30 points, followed by Emerald with 55 points. Guests can advance to Diamond once they hit 80 points, Diamond Plus at 175, and Pinnacle Club at 700.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: The Latitudes Rewards Program begins with the Bronze tier at between one and 19 points, followed by Silver between 20 and 44, Gold between 45 and 74, and Platinum between 75 and 149. Members reach the Sapphire tier when they accumulate between 150 and 349 points, Diamond between 350 and 699, and Ambassador at 700 or higher.
  • Holland America: Mariner Society members start at the 1-star tier after completing their first cruise, and advance to the 2-star tier when they accrue 30 cruise day credits (each credit is equivalent to one overnight on board). Travelers reach the 3-star tier at 75 cruise day credits, 4-star at 200 cruise day credits, and 5-star at 500 cruise day credits.
  • Princess Cruises: The Princess Captain’s Circle begins with the Gold tier after guests take their first cruise. They reach Ruby after taking three cruises or sailing 30 cruise days, Platinum after completing five cruises or sailing 50 cruise days, and Elite after 15 cruises or 150 cruise days.

Unlike some other travel rewards programs, cruise line loyalty members don’t have to worry about renewing or earning their loyalty status for the following year, according to Feldman. “Once you attain a certain level, you’re that level for life,” he said.

Easy travel: Your ultimate road trip planner, from saving on gas to driving with kids

Are cruise line loyalty perks worth it?

Given how much sailing is required to reach the top tier on some lines, the biggest advantages of membership may seem far off for newer cruisers. While Feldman said some passengers are “intent to climb that ladder,” others would sail with a given line anyway.

Wallace, who has been on more than a dozen Royal Caribbean cruises, said if he compared the money he’s spent on sailings to what he’s saved as a loyalty member, it’s “probably not going to look great.” But it’s the good service and laid-back atmosphere that keep him coming back, and anything that makes the trip easier or saves him some money is just a bonus.

“I’m going anyway, so if I get things (out of it), that’s cool,” he said. “That makes me happy.”

  • 'Codename Nemo': How a WWII Aircraft Carrier Became the First Ship to Capture an Enemy at Sea Since the War of 1812

which cruise line has best military discount

By June 1944, Capt. Daniel Gallery and the escort carrier USS Guadalcanal were in the middle of their second hunter-killer mission. The Guadalcanal and its destroyer escorts USS Chatelain, USS Flaherty, USS Pillsbury and USS Pope had already taken out two German U-boats and were on the hunt for a third. This submarine, however, would have a different fate. Capt. Gallery wanted to capture one and was certain he could do it; he even had boarding parties at the ready.

When two of the Guadalcanal's F4F Wildcat aircraft spotted a U-505 off the coast of Cape Verde, Gallery knew he had his chance. Not only did he have boarding parties ready, he had a film crew standing by to capture the moment: the moment when the U.S. Navy captured its first enemy warship at sea since the War of 1812.

"Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine" is a new, exhaustively researched book from journalist Charles Lachman that tells the whole story of the capture of U-505, using records and interviews from both the American and German points of view.

"'Codename Nemo' is my first military-oriented book," Lachman, a former reporter for the New York Post, Fox and "Inside Edition," told Military.com. "I love reading and writing nonfiction thrillers. I felt this story had everything I was looking for in terms of this extraordinary military engagement. It had great characters, great villains, great American heroes, extraordinary action and great material that really told the story with a great fast-paced narrative."

which cruise line has best military discount

U-505 is a museum ship in Chicago nowadays, having been restored and housed at the Museum of Science and Industry since 1954. During World War II, however, it was a fearsome enemy. The battle for control of Atlantic Ocean shipping lanes was the longest continuous military campaign of the war. In the early years, German U-boats wreaked havoc on Allied shipping. But as time went on, American escort carriers could provide cover for convoys on the Atlantic crossing, which devastated German U-boat operations. Still, an enemy submarine was a dangerous opponent.

Meanwhile, life aboard a German submarine was harsh. Some 50 men were crammed into a combined space, sharing two toilets and air made foul by their inability to shower or change clothes, and the constant diesel fumes from its engines.

To make matters worse, the war wasn't going well for Germany, and conditions were even more dire for submariners. Advances in radar, aircraft and convoy protection meant few successes for them, and a failure meant certain death. Allied anti-submarine tactics were so good, U-boat commanders would resurface only at night for fear of attracting attention.

With that in mind, capturing a German submarine might not seem like a great idea, but Capt. Gallery was convinced it was not only possible, but necessary. The U-boats contained a trove of valuable intelligence information, including the holy grail of Nazi Germany's secrets: the Enigma machine, the device used to encode secret military communications. Gallery felt as though capturing an Enigma device could be the key to winning the war.

which cruise line has best military discount

"It shows you what a brilliant naval strategist he was," Lachman said. "He felt that once you engage a U-boat in battle, you didn't necessarily have to blow it up into pieces straight away. You could force it to the surface with depth charges and hedgehog mortar shells, and also aim enough small arms fire to force the crew to abandon ship. The whole point was to obtain the potential gold mine of intelligence the German sailors had."

It was June 4, 1944, when the Guadalcanal and its task force made sonar contact with U-505 off the coast of what is today Western Sahara. Within seven minutes, the sub was struck by depth charges and hedgehog mortars and forced to surface. Believing the U-boat was lost, its captain ordered the crew to abandon ship. They did, but in their haste failed to set the detonation charges that would scuttle the ship. They even left the engines running. Gallery saw his chance to capture it, and sent a boarding party.

"The boarding party fully expected to have a shootout with the German sailors on U-505," said Lachman. "They were told that even if everything went according to plan, there were likely German sailors still aboard. And not only that, naval intelligence informed them that there were 14 demolition charges that were scattered about and set within 15 minutes of the Germans abandoning ship. So it was really a suicide mission that they were facing."

Members of the American boarding party didn't face opposition, however. They took care of the demolition charges, captured the intelligence material and even plugged the leaks and prepared to tow U-505 back to a friendly port.

Capt. Gallery had just led the U.S. Navy's first successful capture of an enemy ship at sea since the USS Peacock took the HCS Nautilus in 1815. The Navy should have been overjoyed, but it wasn't; Adm. Ernest King thought the capture might alert the Germans their codes had been broken.

What Gallery didn't know is that the Allies not only already had an Enigma machine, but that they'd broken the code and were reading German communications, one of the Allies' most closely guarded secrets.

"Gallery told a handful of top-level people in the Navy about his plan," Lachman said. "He was taken to naval intelligence, who briefed him on what could be found inside a U-boat, but it never reached the level of Fleet Admiral Ernest King. He actually threatened to court-martial Captain Gallery. It was only when he calmed down that he realized this was a U.S. Navy triumph. And then Captain Gallery became a hero.

"I think this book provides a fuller understanding about the Battle of the Atlantic, the U-boat menace and how close the Nazi submarine fleet came to strangling the Allied war effort," Lachman continued. "I think it's great that the nine volunteers for the suicide mission were the sons of immigrants; that's a nice reminder of what this country's all about. It illustrates the Greatest Generation at its best. What I really like about these guys is how humble they were after the war. They didn't really want to talk about the experience. They were quiet men, and all they wanted to do was after the war was over, they wanted to get a good job and raise their families and live humbly. They showed a love of country that I think we could all learn from."

" Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine " is available now wherever books are sold.
