world tour cruise lines

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Retired, taking a job hiatus or working remotely? A world cruise is a safe, easy and exhilarating way to score a global adventure beyond compare. You might even make new lifelong friends sharing similar interests.

So, pull out your travel wish list and find an itinerary for those coveted destinations.

Here, you can learn more about what's involved in an around-the-world cruise and drool over 12 terrific choices across a range of fares for an incredible monthslong voyage at sea.

What is a world cruise?

Never mind the moniker, a world cruise may visit several continents but not circumnavigate the globe. Cruise lines usually designate one ship (a few offer two) to sail about 100 days or longer — some even sail more than 200 days — without repeating ports.

World cruises traditionally start in January and end around April or May. They sail round-trip from one American city, such as San Francisco or Miami, or offer a choice of starting points on both coasts, making access easy.

What to know about world cruises

With so few world cruises available, book far in advance. Bookings open roughly two years in advance, and some small-ship cruises sell out within hours. You'll need the extra time to make arrangements to leave your home for months. For that reason, this story will focus on 2025 world cruises.

Related: Hot cruises you'll need to book at least 1 year in advance — maybe even 2!

Around-the-world cruise cost

Such lengthy sailings cost plenty. The bigger ship lines offer the lowest fares, although extra fees for what's not included (such as shore excursions and alcohol) can add up quickly. If contemplating a big-ship voyage, read the inclusions carefully, as they vary among lines.

Luxury vessels bundle many costly amenities into the fare, like business- or first-class plane tickets and luxury hotel stays, and charge the most. They also deliver fine dining, pampering service, glam surroundings and impressive special events. (Silversea Cruises has previously rented out an entire island to entertain its world cruise guests.)

Thus, expect considerable price differences. Count on spending about $20,000 per person minimum to score an entry-level accommodation on the bigger ships and approximately $80,000 to $90,000 per person for an ultraluxury vessel.

Note that for the poshest lines, "entry-level" may mean a spacious, elegant suite with a veranda. For other lines, the most basic cabin is a small, windowless room.

Thanks to an overwhelming response to its 2024 world cruise (which is currently waitlisted), Azamara announced itineraries for both 2025 and 2026, both aboard the 684-passenger Azamara Onward.

Azamara Onward is the newest ship to join the Miami-based line's four-vessel fleet. The ship's size provides an intimate experience and allows it to call on small towns bigger ships can't access.

Along the way, world cruisers can sample authentic Hawaiian cuisine; explore the unspoiled beaches and the lush rainforest on Stewart Island, New Zealand; and visit the world's largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia.

The itinerary will include a pre-sailing welcome party, exclusive cultural events, concierge service and other upscale perks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. It also features exclusive world cruise cultural events in ports around the globe. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.

world tour cruise lines

Experience more as a World Crusader!

World cruises lasting a full year are rare. In most cases, your stay on board is 100 to 200 days. Enough time to get to know the most beautiful places on earth!

How much is a world cruise?

Real world cruises cost on average about 10,000 EUR. World cruise sectors are cheaper and can be booked for about half the price. In addition, there are costs for tips, trips and services that you use (for example, cleaning).

Benefits of a world cruise cruise

Cruises are a great way to travel around the world, because on average, with between 100 and 200 days on board, you do not have to worry about travel arrangements such as check-in and check-out, which would be on the agenda for air travel with hotel stays. Other benefits include:

1 - No travel planning

If you organised a world tour on your own, you would have to do a lot of planning and numerous bookings. Where should the journey begin and end? In which order should which places be visited? How do you get from A to B and when do you book the transfers? This is just a small selection of the questions that need to be clarified. On a world cruise you can sit back and relax , because all these questions have already been answered. You just choose the route with the most interesting places for you and organise your journey to the starting harbour.

2 - The hotel goes with you!

Forget constantly packing, with your world cruise you won’t need to waste time changing hotel for each new destination. You can also pack more because you do not have to carry your luggage with you every day.

3 - Numerous Landscapes, Metropolises & Cultures

You will experience much more cruising on a world cruise than on a week's tour of the Mediterranean. Although you invest more time, you have seen the world in one go and know which places are worthwhile for a second visit. So you can quickly find your favourite place in the world to visit time and time again.

4 - No household chores!

What a treat! During the weeks at sea the household activities simply disappear! No cleaning and no cooking - all this is done by the staff on board the ships for you.

5 - Cheaper prices

Although a trip around the world seems expensive at first glance, the daily prices are often below the daily prices of a short cruise. Although you pay a lot of money for your trip around the world, if you were to tour all the places you see on individual tours every year, that would cost you a lot more in the end. So world cruises are not as expensive as you think at first sight.

What is included during your cruise?

Now the question arises: What is included in a world tour by ship and what additional costs do I have to expect? Good question! The included services of each trip always depends on the cruise line, but this is always included:

  • All meals on board
  • Port fees and taxes
  • Use of most on-board facilities
  • Entertainment program on board
  • Table drinks (often only certain drinks possible)
  • Baggage transport at embarkation and disembarkation

possible (depending on the cruise line)

  • 24-hour room service
  • Welcome cocktail
  • Fruit basket on the cabin
  • Unlimited number of land excursions
  • Transfers to and from the ship

The additional included services can be found on most luxury cruise lines. If you’re unsure which cruise line is for you, we are happy to advise you!

Packing list for the world tour

For a cruise around the world you should expect 120 to 140 days - a very long time! What do you need in your case for such a long journey?

World travel packing list for carry-on luggage

  • Valid passport
  • Credit Card & Cash
  • Valuables: Smartphone, laptop, camera etc. incl. Charging cable
  • Travel documents: air ticket, train ticket etc.
  • Medicines, vaccination certificate, allergy passport
  • Book, game etc.
  • List of emergency contacts
  • Bathing suits
  • Changing clothes for the first hours on board
  • Comfortable and lightweight shoes

World travel packing list for the suitcase

  • Comfortable clothing (for cold and warm temperatures)
  • Sports clothes
  • First-aid kit
  • Small sewing box
  • Small backpack for day trips
  • Spare glasses, contact lenses

Popular ports during a world trip

A world cruise usually lasts between 120 and 140 days. The routes and ports vary depending on the cruise line, but particularly popular ports are the following:

  • New York cruises
  • Cruises from Southampton
  • Lisbon cruises
  • Rome cruises
  • Dubai cruises
  • Singapore cruises
  • Hong Kong Cruises
  • Brisbane cruises
  • Sydney cruises
  • Rio de Janeiro cruises

Popular cruise lines for world cruise cruises

So if you’ve decided a world cruise is for you, now you just need to choose your cruise line. With Regent Seven Seas you travel the world in a luxurious way. Not only are the meals on board are included, but also a variety of shore excursions. Costa , AIDA Cruises and MSC Cruises allow you to circumnavigate the world on a smaller budget, and Princess Cruises offers fabulous itineraries. There is argueably no better way to experience a world cruise sector than on one of the world famous ships of the Cunard Line (make sure you don’t forget to pack a tuxedo or two!)

Endless cruise set to tour the world – and it’ll always be summer

Editor’s Note: Sign up for  Unlocking the World , CNN Travel’s weekly newsletter. Get the latest news in aviation, food and drink, where to stay and other travel developments.

Under a blazing blue sky in the legendary Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland, where the Titanic was once built, the modestly sized Villa Vie Odyssey sits in dry dock, dwarfed by the huge 12-deck Caribbean party boat that looms beside it.

But when it sets sail on May 30, after intense refurbishment and cosmetic work, this 31-year-old ship will be one of the hottest new innovations in the cruise industry. It will be one of only two residential cruise ships in operation – and its world tour will have successfully launched where others have very dramatically failed.

Around 300 passengers – or “residents” – will be on board to start the voyage from Belfast which will visit 425 ports in 147 countries across all seven continents, circumnavigating the globe every three-and-a-half years.

For this is to be a cruise without end, where passengers can choose between pay-as-you-go and ownership options, spending as little as 35 days or the whole of their natural life on board, with the ship itself being replaced around every 15 years.

1,301 days of summer

The relatively small size of the 924-capacity vessel means it’s capable of docking in the heart of destinations, with port stays ranging from a leisurely two to seven days, rather than the typical “hit and run” cruise ship approach. These long-term cruise residents do, after all, have all the time in the world.

The global itinerary , broken down into 16 “segments” over 1,301 days, has been carefully designed so that it catches the spring-summer seasons in both the northern and summer hemisphere. Residents, if they so choose, may never feel the winter chill again.

There’s no commitment to stay on board for the full three and a half years, or to get off when that’s over. Residents can pick and choose between segments as they like. South America is the most popular part and the transatlantic section the least, Villa Vie Residences CEO Mikael Petterson told the dry dock press tour Sunday.

Learning from the past

Takeup has been high. Of the 295 cabins available at launch, 270 have been sold, with some residents choosing to join later in the voyage. Petterson expects all cabins to be fully booked by the end of the Northern European segment, which ends in August, and more will be opened up during segment two, which is Greenland to Miami.

“We have a significant amount of people that want to come and see the ship themselves before committing, for obvious reasons,” says Petterson. It’s been a long journey to this upcoming launch and this is not the first venture of its kind.

In November 2023, Life at Sea Cruises canceled its three-year voyage shortly before departure, having not secured a ship, leaving passengers stranded and pursuing refunds of tens of thousands of dollars.

Villa Vie was started by Petterson and other former members of the Life at Sea executive team who quit when the original team split in May 2022. He says they’ve been able to learn from the mistakes of those who’ve gone before.

Conservative option

The ship now known as Villa Vie Odyssey was constructed in 1993 and – as the 495-cabin MS Braemar – was purchased from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines last year for $13 million. A further $12 million has been spent on the refurb and getting it fully recertified and up to standard.

“At $25 million all in, it’s less than half of what anyone else has been trying,” says Pettersen. “The ship is much cheaper, the financing is in place, the equity’s in place, the sales are more than twice what Life at Sea had, so we’re just in a completely different position.”

The reason the team chose this conservatively sized and priced vessel is “because we wanted to make sure we could pull it through,” he says. “The challenge has all been with the technical and getting her from asleep to awake. We’re largely there. We’re moving onto the hotel and that’s the easy bit,” he laughs.

The boat is wearing its age well and it’s not all been an uphill struggle. In 2009, it was enlarged during a refurb, and was renovated again in 2019, with many of the public areas getting a stylish new face.

“A lot of these spaces were only in service for four months since they were last revitalized, so we haven’t had to do anything to them,” explains Pettersen. There are plans to keep updating spaces after launch, too – like a lived-in home rather than an off-the-peg hotel.

Under $33,000 a year

As the Odyssey, the ship will have eight decks, a wraparound promenade and an enlarged pool – combining the Braemar’s two, so that passengers can swim laps. And when that feels too energetic, there are two Jacuzzis to lounge in.

There will be three restaurants, five bars and lounges, a spa, a fitness center, a library and a medical center. Then there’s the spacious business center with sea views, internet from Starlink and Viasat 3, and an “interactive culinary center” for those missing the kitchen, as well as for cooking classes.

There will also be a golf program with a simulator on board and outings to greens around the world.

It’s also surprisingly affordable, as round-the-world cruise experiences go. Over on megayacht The World – the other residential cruise ship – prices start at $2 million a year. But on Villa Vie Odyssey, an annual rental works out at less than $32,485, while a three-year stint will set you back $97,455.

An inside cabin is $89 per person per day, outside cabins start at $119 per person per day, and balconies at $199. All food and soft drinks are included, plus alcohol at dinner, as well as Wi-Fi and medical visits (but not procedures or medicines). There’ll also be 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping and bi-weekly laundry service at no extra cost.

Endless Horizons

Meanwhile, buying entails paying outright for a cabin – starting at $99,000 for an internal one, $149,000 for an outdoor and $249,000 for a balcony. Owners must then pay monthly fees starting at $1,750 per person, $2,500 per person, or $4,000 per person respectively – or $21,000, $30,000 or $48,000 per year.

Owners can then rent it out to other people themselves (for no charge) or through Villa Vie for a fee.

Those buying a cabin will be guaranteed it for 15 years, which is the estimated life of the ship. And then there’s the newly introduced Endless Horizons program, where residents make a one-time payment of $299,000 for lifetime access to a cabin, transferring ships when the cruise does.

Prices are based on double occupancy. Solo travelers get discounts of 30% for an internal cabin, 20% for an outside one and 10% for a balcony.

There are also a lot more solo travelers than one might expect on a typical vacation cruise – 50% of this first takeup are single. In the under-40s range, there are a lot more single male travelers than female, but post-retirement age, there are more women. The average age of traveler is 58 and 80% are from the United States, with Canadians being the next biggest group.

Floating community

A few of them are on board during the dry dock tour, such as John and Melody Hennessee, flamboyantly coordinated in hats and vests. They’ve made headlines around the world for selling their worldly goods to live on cruise ships for the rest of their lives, and they were there Sunday to plan out their triple-cabin with the team.

As these are people’s homes, there are generous customization options afforded to residents, with requests accommodated where possible. There are a small number of large suites available to the ritziest of passengers – the biggest has a price tag of $900,000.

New Zealand couple Mark and Katrina Howard, in hard hats to get their first look at their home for the next three and a half years, have no problem with the downsizing requiring to fit their belongings into a two-person cabin. “We’ve done motor-homing,” says Katrina.

As for cruise ships, “we met on one in 1994, out of Auckland,” she says, and now “we’ll be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on board” Villa Vie Odyssey.

It’s just one of the many celebrations, landmark moments and life-changing events that are set to take place among this floating community of strangers who are about to become close and near-permanent neighbors. Whatever waves or storms lie ahead, the summer-led itinerary ensures the sun will largely be shining.

CNN’s Julia Buckley contributed to this report.

Endless cruise set to tour the world – and it'll always be summer

U nder a blazing blue sky in the legendary Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland, where the Titanic was once built, the modestly sized Villa Vie Odyssey sits in dry dock, dwarfed by the huge 12-deck Caribbean party boat that looms beside it.

But when it sets sail on May 30, after intense refurbishment and cosmetic work, this 31-year-old ship will be one of the hottest new innovations in the cruise industry. It will be one of only two residential cruise ships in operation – and its world tour will have successfully launched where others have very dramatically failed.

Around 300 passengers – or "residents" – will be on board to start the voyage from Belfast which will visit 425 ports in 147 countries across all seven continents, circumnavigating the globe every three-and-a-half years.

For this is to be a cruise without end, where passengers can choose between pay-as-you-go and ownership options, spending as little as 35 days or the whole of their natural life on board, with the ship itself being replaced around every 15 years.

1,301 days of summer

The relatively small size of the 924-capacity vessel means it's capable of docking in the heart of destinations, with port stays ranging from a leisurely two to seven days, rather than the typical "hit and run" cruise ship approach. These long-term cruise residents do, after all, have all the time in the world.

The global itinerary , broken down into 16 "segments" over 1,301 days, has been carefully designed so that it catches the spring-summer seasons in both the northern and summer hemisphere. Residents, if they so choose, may never feel the winter chill again.

There's no commitment to stay on board for the full three and a half years, or to get off when that's over.

"We have a significant amount of people that want to come and see the ship themselves before committing, for obvious reasons," says Petterson. It's been a long journey to this upcoming launch and this is not the first venture of its kind.

He says they've been able to learn from the mistakes of those who've gone before.

"At $25 million all in, it's less than half of what anyone else has been trying," says Pettersen. "The ship is much cheaper, the financing is in place, the equity's in place, the sales are more than twice what Life at Sea had, so we're just in a completely different position."

The reason the team chose this conservatively sized and priced vessel is "because we wanted to make sure we could pull it through," he says. "The challenge has all been with the technical and getting her from asleep to awake. We're largely there. We're moving onto the hotel and that's the easy bit," he laughs.

The boat is wearing its age well and it's not all been an uphill struggle. In 2009, it was enlarged during a refurb, and was renovated again in 2019, with many of the public areas getting a stylish new face.

"A lot of these spaces were only in service for four months since they were last revitalized, so we haven't had to do anything to them," explains Pettersen. There are plans to keep updating spaces after launch, too – like a lived-in home rather than an off-the-peg hotel.

Under $33,000 a year

As the Odyssey, the ship will have eight decks, a wraparound promenade and an enlarged pool – combining the Braemar's two, so that passengers can swim laps. And when that feels too energetic, there are two Jacuzzis to lounge in.

There will be three restaurants, five bars and lounges, a spa, a fitness center, a library and a medical center. Then there's the spacious business center with sea views, internet from Starlink and Viasat 3, and an "interactive culinary center" for those missing the kitchen, as well as for cooking classes.

There will also be a golf program with a simulator on board and outings to greens around the world.

It's also surprisingly affordable, as round-the-world cruise experiences go.

There'll also be 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping and bi-weekly laundry service at no extra cost.

And then there's the newly introduced Endless Horizons program, where residents make a one-time payment of $299,000 for lifetime access to a cabin, transferring ships when the cruise does.

They've made headlines around the world for selling their worldly goods to live on cruise ships for the rest of their lives, and they were there Sunday to plan out their triple-cabin with the team.

As these are people's homes, there are generous customization options afforded to residents, with requests accommodated where possible.

"We've done motor-homing," says Katrina.

As for cruise ships, "we met on one in 1994, out of Auckland," she says, and now "we'll be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on board" Villa Vie Odyssey.

It's just one of the many celebrations, landmark moments and life-changing events that are set to take place among this floating community of strangers who are about to become close and near-permanent neighbors. Whatever waves or storms lie ahead, the summer-led itinerary ensures the sun will largely be shining.

Passenger dies after jumping off the world’s largest cruise ship

Passenger dies after jumping off the world’s largest cruise ship

The passenger had been on board royal caribbean's icon of the seas when he jumped from the ship.

Kit Roberts

A man has died after jumping from the largest cruise ship in the world.

The man had been in the first night of a seven-day voyage on Royal Caribbean's new vessel Icon of the Seas.

Lifeboats were dispatched from Icon of the Seas, and while rescuers were able to bring the man back on board he was later pronounced dead.

The ship stopped for around two hours while the 2,350-strong crew mounted a search and rescue mission for the missing passenger.

The ship had been around 300 miles away from Port Miami when the tragic incident unfolded.

A spokesperson for the US Coast released a statement, telling the New York Post: “The cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man and brought him back aboard.

“He was pronounced deceased. Beyond assisting in the search, the US Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident."

The man, who has not been identified, jumped more than 80 feet from the ship.

Other passengers posted on social media as the ship halted its progress and the lifeboats were scrambled to begin the search and rescue.

One person wrote: "Absolutely terrible, kinda freaked out when I heard the announcement"

A second documented the reaction, writing: "I was up for 5mins when the Captain announced someone went over. Everyone rushed to their balconies to look."

A third wrote: "On Icon of the Seas right now. Someone jumped/fell overboard and now a Search & Rescue is taking place. Low chance they’ll be found. Hold your loved ones close, guys."

Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, measuring an enormous 1,200 feet long.

Royal Caribbean told the New York Post: "The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

UNILAD has reached out to Royal Caribbean and the US Coast Guard for further comment.
