REVIEW: 5 Island Tour, Split – Is It Worth It? (2024)

5 island tour from Split Croatia

There is a good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through them, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you! As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. As ever, all opinions are my own.

The 5 Island Tour is probably the most popular day trip from Split, and you’ll find countless boat companies lining Split’s harbour offering their own 5 island tour. It can be a bit overwhelming knowing which one to go with!

During my 5 days in Split, I couldn’t resist joining a 5 island tour to get a taste of Croatian island hopping in the limited time I had.

The tour is a jam-packed 10-hour day , but I was eager to see some of the most beautiful places in Croatia. The tour stops off at many of the best islands to visit near Split.

As I said, there are a ton of different providers all offering Blue Cave 5 island tours from Split or Trogir, but after speaking to my hostel owner and doing extensive research I booked this 5 island tour .

Note: I was not paid by the tour company to write this review.  I paid full price for my Split 5 island boat tour with my own money, and the company had no idea that I was a blogger or planned to write about my experience after the tour.

⛵ Book your tickets here!

Here is why I chose this tour over all of the competitors:

  • Booking via Get Your Guide means you have extra protection. Their cancellation policy means you can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund. This was ideal for me as my plans were very loose.
  • The tour is in the ‘G Originals’ category. This means it is one of the highest-rated tours on Get Your Guide, so Get Your Guide has added their stamp of approval to the tour. This is quite rare!
  • Snorkelling gear is included in the price.
  • It has a load of outstanding reviews (over 100!) so I knew I was going to have an amazing time.

Island hopping in Croatia

The downside, though, is that the tour comes in at around €115 for the day , which is definitely not cheap. My research showed that all 5 island tours from Split cost similar, though, so I guess that’s just the price.

I cringed as I handed over my money, but I’m pleased to say that it’s well worth it ! I had one of the best days ever on this tour, and highly recommend it!

Don’t just take my word for it, though. In this post, I’ll share the stops you make on the tour, what you can expect, and my review of the Split 5 Island Tour.

Top tip: What’s the correct currency for Croatia ? As of 1 January 2023 the currency in Croatia is now the Euro. All prices in this post are listed in Euros.

Stops on the Five Island Boat Tour from Split:

  • Komiža (a town on the island of Vis)
  • Blue Lagoon
  • Stiniva Beach

The order you visit the destinations depends on how much time you have and how busy the skipper thinks each destination will be.

They try to order your stops so that you’ll hit each destination at the quietest time possible . For this reason, there’s a chance you’ll head to the Blue Cave first since it can get crazy busy there.

The Boat Ride

5 island trip split

I met my tour group in Split harbour and I was instantly happy to see that the group size was around 12 people , meaning it was fairly small. Huge tour groups suck!

I was also happy to see that people of all ages and travel styles were on the tour. As a young solo traveller, I can feel very awkward if I join a tour full of married couples.

I was glad to see there were other solo travellers, couples, families and friends all on the tour, so I didn’t feel like the odd one out.

I was also thrilled to be stepping foot on a speedboat – very fancy!

The speedboat has a sundeck section on the back, and I recommend you head straight here when you board the boat. Otherwise it’ll fill up quickly! I spent the whole journey lounging here, and it meant I definitely got the best views on the boat.

The first journey on our five island speedboat tour lasted approximately 90 minutes before you get to your first destination. Lie out on the deck, listen to some music and enjoy the journey!

It can get very windy on the journey and no matter how hot the day might be, chances are you’ll get cold on the boat. For this reason, be sure to pack both a sweater and sunscreen, which you’ll already have with you if you’ve checked out my guide to packing for Croatia.

The boat crew have windproof jackets that you can wear too, but it’s good to have a sweater to go underneath to keep warm.

Stop 1 – Komiža, on the Island of Vis

Komiza on the island of Vis

If you’re a fan of musicals, you may recognise the harbour in Komiža as one of the filming locations in Mamma Mia 2 . I haven’t seen the second movie yet, but as soon as I found out it was filmed here I was instantly excited. After all, everyone adores the picture-perfect setting of Mamma Mia!

You’ll get around 1 hour to explore this fishing village. This is just enough time to wander the harbour, dip your toes in the water of the pebble beach, and stop for a coffee whilst people watching.

I did find that cafe prices were pretty steep in Komiža, probably because it’s a growing tourist destination, so just keep that in mind.

Even with the limited time you do have at Komiža, though, there’s no doubt you’ll fall hard for this charming Mediterranean-style village . The 17th and 18th-century houses that crowd around the harbour are so idyllic that it’s easy to imagine you’re in Mamma Mia yourself!

Stop 2 – Blue Cave

Blue cave day trip in croatia

The Blue Cave is the reason most people join a Split 5 Island Tour,

Often, however, they don’t even really know what it is, or why they should go there. I certainly didn’t! I had just seen ‘BLUE CAVE’ plastered on tour advertisements in Split harbour, so I assumed it was some epic destination that I just couldn’t leave Split without visiting.

It’s funny, because the Blue Cave is (in my opinion) the worst stop on the 5 Island Tour in Croatia. That’s because SO. MANY. island hopping tours go there .

The Blue Cave is a waterlogged sea cave in a bay on the island of Biševo , about 70km from Split. Pretty much nobody lives on the island, and it’s just a base for tourists waiting to visit the Blue Cave.

You can read more about visiting the Blue Cave on my post about what to expect when visiting , but in short: expect long waits!

I waited around 2 hours . It was very hot, but there was a shaded waiting area and a bar/cafe you could pass the time in.

Since the queue goes so slowly, and your skipper will be keeping an eye on it, you’re free to explore the small island. You could also go to the small beach near the harbour, or sit in the shade reading a book.

Boats are limited to spending around 5 minutes in the Blue Cave , so it’s a brief visit to say the least. It was very cool once we were inside though.

I don’t personally think the Blue Cave was worth waiting hours for, but if I had known about the wait I’d have packed a book to pass the time.

Stop 3 – Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon in Croatia

I adored visiting the Blue Lagoon, and it’s an unmissable stop on the five islands tour from Split!

Located between the Dalmatian islands of Veliki and Krknjasi, the unbelievably blue and clear waters of the Blue Lagoon keep calling to travellers. It’s a very popular place to visit!

The good news, though, is that it’s almost impossible to visit the Blue Lagoon without a boat , and this stops it from getting too crowded. The water is a brilliant shade of blue (it’s called the Blue Lagoon after all), and as clear as glass!

The main reason people visit the Blue Lagoon is to swim and snorkel, and this is where the free snorkel equipment included in the price of the tour comes in handy!

You’ll have between 1 hour and 90 minutes at the Blue Lagoon, depending on how long you spend at the Blue Cave. Be sure to make the most of your time here to swim, snorkel, and jump off the back of the boat into the water like a big kid!

The water is so freaking cold (yes, even in summer!) that it’ll definitely refresh you from the heat of the sun.

Stop 4 – Stiniva Beach

Stiniva Cove, accessible on a 5 island tour from Split

Voted the most beautiful beach in Europe by the European Best Destinations website, this hidden cove is pretty hard to get to without a boat. This means a visit to Stiniva Beach makes you one lucky traveller!

The high cliffs that surround the beach allow just a narrow ‘sea entrance’ to the cove, so your boat will dock out in the ocean. From here, you’ll have to swim through the opening to get to the beach .

The water, like everywhere in Croatia, is an unbelievably vibrant turquoise colour. You can see all the way to the bottom of the ocean with ease. Having to swim to the cove makes getting there even more rewarding!

There’s a small bar on the beach, so if you have a waterproof case to bring some cash with you then bring it! The beach, however, is a pebble beach , so it’s not too comfortable to sit on. Instead, your time at Stiniva Beach is better spent splashing and swimming in the water.

You’ll spend around 45 minutes at Stiniva Beach. This is the perfect amount of time to cool off in the ocean, crawl over the pebbles on the beach, and spend some time sunbathing.

Stop 5 – Hvar Town

Hvar Town on Hvar Island in Croatia

Hvar Town, on the island of Hvar, is a playground for both the rich and famous and down and out backpackers. I know – they’re not two groups you’d expect to mix, but it works!

I liked it so much that I actually returned the very next day for a full-day trip from Split !

If you can, you should spend at least one full day in Hvar, but visiting on the 5 Island Tour is the perfect taster to get you hooked and make you want to visit again.

Hvar will be the final stop on the 5 Island Tour, and they possibly saved the best until last. As your boat draws into the port, you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the whitewashed buildings and blue water.

Hvar Town really is a knock-out. I think you’d struggle to find a more beautiful town on the Dalmatian Coast.

Grab a late lunch at Hanibal , who make the most epic veggie pizza I’ve ever eaten, then stroll around Hvar’s stunning old town, walk up the hill to Tvrdava Fortress or wander along the coast to find a beach to lounge on for a while.

You’ll have around 1 hour 45 minutes in Hvar, so use it wisely!

It’s then time to return back to Split ( boo! ). The journey will take around 60 minutes on the speedboat, so try to get a seat on the sunlounger at the back of the boat again for the best views.

You’ll arrive back in Split just in time to see the harbour bathed in golden glowing light before sunset.

Split city at sunset

Once in Split, I recommend finishing off your amazing island hopping day by wandering along the promenade and getting a glass of Croatian wine from Maduro Bar .

FAQs About The 5 Island Tour From Split

What to pack for the 5 island tour.

  • SPF 30+ sunscreen
  • A book (to read whilst waiting at the Blue Cave)
  • Lots of water

Should I Book the 5 Island Tour or the 3 Island Tour?

If you’re researching the 5 Island Tour, chances are you’ll come across the 3 Island Tour. It’s basically a shorter and cheaper island hopping tour from Split, and you can read my full review of it here .

I actually went on both of the tours (after doing the 5 Island Tour I wanted to do even more island hopping!) but the 5 Island Tour is a million times better .

Not only is it pretty much double the duration of the 3 Island tour, but the stops are (in my opinion) more interesting. It’s far better value for money.

If you’re wondering what the differences between the two tours are, I have summarised them below:

What’s Included on the 5 Island Tour from Split?

  • Entry tickets for the Blue Cave
  • Speedboat ride
  • Skipper and guide
  • Snorkelling gear
  • Windproof jackets
  • Life jackets
  • Bottled water

Embark in the capital of Dalmatia and unlock your lifetime memories. Hop on and get ready, we will start the tour with Bisevo island – the place of only 15 inhabitants, keepers of grandiose Blue Cave. When the sun hits the opening of the vault, the cave gets colored in magnificent shades of blue.

Next stop is stunning Stiniva bay, white pebble cove attentively framed with untouched cliffs. The adventure goes on with snorkeling and swimming in blissful, clean waters of shallow bay next to uninhabited island Budikovac.

The lunch is waiting for you in sailor’s heaven called Palmizana, lovely place situated at the superstar island – Hvar. You will have enough free time to explore its beauties and history, no worries!

The tour finishes by sailing to Split, vivacious city of the Roman emperor Diocletian.

08:00 Departure from Split, Riva

09:45 – 11:30 island biševo (blue cave), 11:00 – 11:30 fisherman’s village komiža (bonus visit in case we manage fast entrance into the blue cave).

Komiža on Vis Island retains the flavour of a Mediterranean fishing village even though it is becoming increasingly popular as a beach resort. A jumble of pleasantly ramshackle 17th and 18th-century houses crowd around a port and bay at the foot of Hum hill.

12:00 – 12:45 Island Vis (Stiniva bay)

Pass by Stiniva Cove

13:15 – 14:00 Island Budikovac (Blue Lagoon swimming and snorkeling)

A place where you feel like the sea touches the sky, surrounded only by the crystal-clear sea, nature and serenity.

14:00 – 14:30 Panoramic ride around the Pakleni Islands of Hvar and lunch on Pakleni islands

A gorgeous chain of wooded isles that stretches out immediately in front of Hvar town with the crystal-clear waters, hidden beaches and deserted lagoons.

16:00 – 17:00 Island Hvar, enjoy free time in Hvar town and sights visit (i.g, Fotica fortress)

Situated in the picturesque nature, facing the southern side of the world, that has given it all Mediterranean attraction and cheerfulness; facing sea, that gave it splendid and repeatable history, Hvar is an inexhaustible treasury of the scenery, atmosphere and adventure.

Five Islands Tour: Choose your boat

Five Islands Tour, also known as Blue Cave Tour , is the most popular excursion to mid Adriatic islands. Not only that we stop on the best locations such as Blue Cave and Hvar but you can also choose between three different types of boats.

You could say that the tour comes in three different sizes with three different price tags . Why three different options?

Because not everybody prefers the same type of boat. One is bigger but slower, the other one is faster but smaller, while the third one combines speed with luxury and comfort.

So not only that you can choose the type of boat you like but you can go on the same trip with the boat that is within your financial limits.

We go to Five Islands Tour every day between 7:30 and 8:00 o'clock from Split harbour

Why is Five Islands Tour #1?

To simply put it, you visit all the best places on mid Adriatic islands, all in one day . That being said, you have enough time in each place . It is not just speeding from one island to another.

On some places we stop for 30 to 45 minutes, while on others we'll stay for more then 2 hours. It all depends on the place and what it offers.

For instance, you don't need to swim in the lagoon for two hours, one is enough. However, you need more time to explore Hvar and visit the fortress above the city.

In the video above you can watch short preview of Blue Cave Tour and get general idea about the excursion to the best locations of mid Adriatic islands.

Which islands/locations we visit?

We stop at Biševo, Vis, Budikovac, Hell Islands (Pakleni otoci) and Hvar . Among these five, Hvar and Vis are among the biggest islands of mid Adriatic.

Lagoon at Budikovac island and Blue Cave on island of Biševo are located around Vis. Palmižana beach at Hell islands, located in front of Hvar, is the best place to have lunch.

Five Islands Tour is composed in a way that the places we visit are one of the best beaches of mid Adriatic, natural phenomena you simply have to visit such as Blue Cave and one of the most popular locations in Croatia such as Hvar.

On this kind of tour you are never bored since each place is stunning, yet different from the previous one.

Blue Cave on Biševo island

What to expect & what to bring?

First destination is the Blue Cave on Biševo which is also the furthest point from Split. It takes between 1 hour and 20 minutes up to 1 hour and 50 minutes to reach it, depending on the speedboat.

After the Blue Cave, each of the following destinations is 10 to 20 minutes away from the previous one . Only the return back from Hvar to Split takes between 45 to 60 minutes.

We recommend you bring a shirt with long sleeves , especially if you are going a on a Five Islands Tour in spring or early fall. Afterall, we are going with a speedboat.

Besides the bathing suit, you might want to bring a towel, sunglasses, sunscreen , hat as well as food, snacks or lunch money .

On the other hand, besides the boat, fuel, the crew and free drinks, safety gear and snorkeling equipment are also included in the price.

Entrance Fee for the Blue Cave

Ticket or entrance fee to the Blue Cave is NOT included in the price of the tour. Nautical center Komiža governs the Blue Cave and determines the price of the entrance fee.

They set the price for pre/post season and for high season as well as for adults, children 6 - 12 years old and for children up to 6 years old which are free of charge.

For full price list of season 2024, visit their info link here .

Our staff buys tickets for all the guests onboard. Please prepare cash in euros for the entrance fee to the Blue Cave.

Budikovac Lagoon

What about the lunch?

Although you have free drinks on the boat,  lunch is not included in the price. However, you have few options.

Cheaper option includes bringing your own snacks and food which doesn't need to be in a refrigerator. You can also buy some snacks and food in local market, when we stop at Hvar.

More expensive option includes having a lunch in one of restaurants at Hvar or Hell Islands . Just remember that these two places are a bit expensive.

Usually the cheapest lunch in a restaurant, at Hvar or Hell Islands, is 100 kuna which is around 14 euros for one person.

Lunch on Hell Islands

Get 2 for the price of 1

Since Hvar is the last destination on Five Islands Tour, before returning to Split, you can use this to your advantage.

If you want to stay for a few days on the most popular Adriatic island, you can join Blue Cave Tour, visit all the best places and stay in Hvar, instead of returning to Split .

Basically, you can also use the excursion as a transfer . Just let us know in advance how much luggage you have.

IMPORTANT: This only applies for Standard and Deluxe Five Islands Tours. Budget Five Islands Tour has reversed itinerary.

View from Hvar's fortress

Pregnant women & toddlers!!!

In order to have enough time in each place and visit the best islands in one day, the only way is to go with a speedboat.

Since the trip can be a bit bumpy, especially if it's windy, we don't take pregnant women and children 3 years old or younger on the speedboat.

Choose your speedboat

Five Islands Tour lasts around 10 hours. We leave from Split harbour between 7:30 - 8:00 AM and we are back in Split around 18:00 - 18:30 PM.

The price difference is based on the fuel expendeture which differs from boat to boat. Accordingly with different boat types, we created three different options for you:

Budget option - Spacious Catamaran

Lux

Spacious catamaran is our most affordable option for visiting Blue Cave and other top islands of mid Adriatic, including Hvar and Vis.

Boat has men's and women's toilets onboard, spacious sundeck on top, air conditioned indoors below and a bar if you want to have a coffee during the tour as well as free paddle boards and snorkeling equipment for our guests.

Although it is a big boat with powerful inboard engines, since it can take many passengers, its capacity lowers the price and makes this catamaran perfect for our " Budget Five Islands Tour " which is among the best selling Split boat tours.

Standard option - Semi closed plastic boat

Get more info

Our speedboats for Standard Five Islands Tour include Enzo 35 and Mercan 34 which are specifically designed for transfers and excursions.

The front part of these boats is covered with roof and equipped with transparent roll-down side covers for protection against sun, wind and the rain. There is also a big sun deck in the back.

With their size of 11 meters, Enzo 35 and Mercan 34 are safe even when the sea is rough and yet small enough to visit all the hidden coves and beaches on the islands.

Deluxe option - Luxury Motorboat

Get more info

Our boats for deluxe option such as Colnago 35, Aliskaf 37 and Colnago 33 provide more space, comfort and luxury.

They also have toilet onboard, shower, free wifi and a cabin. Since they are bigger and wider, they also need to have a stronger engine or in this case, inboard engine.

However, their size, additional equipment and fuel expenditure makes Deluxe Five Islands Tour  the most expensive, when it comes to these three.

CHOOSE YOUR BOAT

While booking the tour of your choice, you pay only deposit to reserve your place on the boat. The rest you pay on the day of departure, before boarding the boat.

  • 664devans 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Family Day Out - Highly Recommended! Our experience with Carlo was absolutely terrific and stands out as one of the best travel excursions I've ever been on. Our group included everyone from small children to older adults, and Carlo accommodated all ages wonderfully. He provided us with excellent recommendations for the day, taking into account the weather and the presence of young children. His suggestions were perfect, and everyone had an amazing time! Carlo ensured we had several stops throughout the day without ever making us feel rushed at any location. His expert driving and warm hospitality were greatly appreciated. Throughout the day, he shared fascinating insights into Croatian history and culture, enriching our experience. We highly recommend Mayer Charter Day Tours and definitely suggest asking for Carlo! Spring weather can be more challenging so the Blue cave was closed that was a pitty. Also the wind was little strong and big waves took the enjoyment from the boat ride. But our skipper Karlo and guide Carmen were amazing to keep up the mood and to make the boat ride tricky Read more Written May 18, 2024

5 island trip split

Unique Blue Cave and 5 islands tour from Trogir and Split provided by Mayer Charter Day Tours

I've been to 20 Caribbean islands — these are the 5 I'd return to and the 2 I'd skip despite having great experiences.

  • After visiting 20 islands in the Caribbean , I have lots of favorites and a few I wouldn't return to.
  • St. Lucia offers wellness activities, fun nightlife, and great food.
  • Although I enjoyed my time on Grand Bahama, this island left me wanting more.

Insider Today

There's a misconception that all Caribbean islands are the same. However, as someone who's been traveling to the Caribbean for almost two decades, I've found that each island has its own distinct food, festivals, and cultural traditions.

After visiting 20 Caribbean islands, I can see why the area is such a hot spot for tourism. In fact, travel to the Caribbean is already off to a strong start this year, with many destinations seeing an uptick in visitors compared to 2023 .

As someone who's spent a lot of time in the Caribbean, these are the five islands I'd love to return to and the two I'd skip.

St. Lucia offers wellness activities and great food.

5 island trip split

Though St. Lucia is typically billed as a romantic destination , I visited on a solo trip and had a blast exploring the island.

Some of my favorite activities included a mud bath in Sulphur Springs, a rum and chocolate tour, and an afternoon boat ride past The Pitons.

St. Lucians also have some great street food and love to have a good time. During my stay, I headed to the lively Friday night Gros Islet street party for grilled conch and fried fish straight off the boat.

Dominica is great for hiking and natural attractions.

Nicknamed " the nature island ," Dominica is one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets.

One of my favorite excursions was a hike to Trafalgar Falls, a pair of stunning waterfalls about a 20-minute drive from the island's capital city, Roseau.

I also rode horseback on the island's black-sand beaches and floated on an inner tube through Titou Gorge, a cave with a hidden waterfall and swimming hole.

St. John has gorgeous beaches.

I spent my 15th wedding anniversary on St. John, the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. One of the highlights of my stay was a beach day at Trunk Bay.

The beach is located inside Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, and though there's a small entry fee, it's worth every penny. The beach is framed by lush mountains, and towering palm trees dot the wide, sandy shore. In short, it's paradise.

St. John isn't a hub for partying or late-night entertainment, but the island's gorgeous sunsets and natural setting are ideal for honeymoons and special anniversary trips.

Grenada is a snorkeling hot spot with a unique national park.

5 island trip split

During my stay on Grenada, I encountered lots of warm and inviting locals, who would strike up conversations and ask how I was enjoying my visit.

Besides enjoying the popular Grand Anse Beach, I booked a day tour to Grand Etang National Park to check out Grand Etang Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by a lush rainforest.

I ended my stay on Grenada with a snorkeling trip to Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park to see the submerged sculptures.

Turks and Caicos are great for decompressing on the beach.

5 island trip split

There's a reason Turks and Caicos are a magnet for celebrities and socialites, but you don't have to be an A-lister to enjoy the islands.

Providenciales is the most populated island in Turks and Caicos. Provo, as some locals call it, offers a laid-back, tranquil beach vacation. Most hotels on Provo are located along Grace Bay, a picture-perfect stretch of pearly white sand and turquoise water.

Water sports like jet skiing, snorkeling, and clear-bottom kayaking are popular, but I was content to spend most of my days alternating between reading on the beach and cooling off in the pool.

However, Grand Cayman was one of the priciest islands I’ve visited.

5 island trip split

Grand Cayman has a lot going for it: beautiful resorts, delicious food, and a flight from Miami that's under two hours.

The soft white sand and sparkling turquoise water of Seven Mile Beach have also helped make Grand Cayman a popular vacation spot .

But when I visited, I experienced a bit of sticker shock since US currency doesn't go as far as it does on other islands. The Caymanian dollar has a fixed exchange rate, and one Caymanian dollar is worth $1.21 USD.

I've visited more affordable islands with equally stunning beaches like Klein Curaçao Beach in Curaçao, Crane Beach in Barbados, and Palm Beach in Aruba.

Grand Bahama left me wanting more.

5 island trip split

One of my first trips to the Caribbean was to Grand Bahama via a ferry from Fort Lauderdale . My husband and I stayed on the island for about a week, filling up on fresh conch and visiting the Port Lucaya marketplace.

While I enjoyed the laid-back stay, I've found that other Bahamian islands have more to see and do.

If you want to be closer to the action, skip Grand Bahama for New Providence, which is home to top-notch restaurants and hotels, historic landmarks like Queen's Staircase, and the annual Junkanoo parade.

  1. REVIEW: 5 Island Tour, Split

It has a load of outstanding reviews (over 100!) so I knew I was going to have an amazing time. The downside, though, is that the tour comes in at around €115 for the day, which is definitely not cheap. My research showed that all 5 island tours from Split cost similar, though, so I guess that's just the price.
