What is a one-way flight, when booking cash tickets, when redeeming points and miles, consider booking open-jaw flights.

Are round-trip flights cheaper? The short answer is that it depends . Where you’re traveling to and if you’re paying with cash or miles are the biggest factors in the equation.

For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).

There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.

Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.

When you book a round-trip flight, it means you travel from Destination A to Destination B and you return back to Destination A from Destination B. Both flights are booked as one ticket.

So when you’re purchasing the ticket, you select your origin, destination, departure and return date. You make one payment, whether it's with cash or miles.

A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.

These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .

When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.

If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.

If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.

Sample flight within the U.S.

In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.

If you were to book these two flights as a round-trip ticket, the price would be exactly the same at $278.

It's a different ball game with international flights.

Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.

However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.

If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.

Two one-way awards offer more flexibility

Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.

For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.

Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards

When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.

Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.

For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.

However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.

In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.

Consider change fees on award flights

Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:

Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.

Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.

However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.

If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.

In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.

In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.

However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.

Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

However, this isn't always the case. Some loyalty programs — such as Delta — charge fewer miles for booking a round-trip award instead of two one-way flights. We recommend pricing out award flights both ways just to be sure.

When you book a round-trip flight, you receive a single ticket that covers both the outbound and inbound legs of the journey.

Round-trip flights are usually cheaper than booking multiple one-way flights, especially for international destinations. But you sacrifice flexibility and have to pay more upfront for a round-trip ticket.

Rescheduling round-trip flights can also be both difficult and expensive.

How Round Trip Flights Work

A round-trip flight includes a flight from your original location, let’s call ‘A,’ to your destination, let’s call ‘B,’ as well as a flight from B back to A. 

With a round-trip ticket, you get a flight to B, where you’ll stay for as long as you like before going back to A. 

Round-trip flights are the most popular flights for travelers who are flying for a vacation.

Round Trip Flights Are Cheaper than One Way Flights

Round trips are almost always cheaper than one-way flights when booking with the same airline, with most airlines incentivizing round trips, especially for leisure travel, and especially to international destinations. 

For example:

• A round trip from London to New York may cost $1,000.
• A one-way trip to New York City from London might cost $600, and a one-way trip from London to New York City may also cost $600.
• In this example, you’d save $200 by choosing a round trip with the same airline rather than booking two separate flights. 

But it could be cheaper for you to fly with two different airlines.

Let’s say you find a British Airways flight from London to New York City for $600. But you also find a Delta Air Lines flight from New York City to London for only $300. 

In that case, you’d save $100 by buying two one-way flights from different airlines. 

You Don’t Have to Fly Both Legs

You’re not technically obligated to fly both legs of a round-trip flight.

If you fly the first leg from your location to the destination, you could stay there longer and miss the return flight if you wanted to.

But airlines dislike this behavior and may penalize your flying privileges if you do this repeatedly. 

If you miss the first leg of your round-trip flight, the airline will most likely automatically cancel the return flight, too. 

How Long You Can Stay on a Round Trip Ticket

You can stay on a round-trip flight for as little as one day to as long as a year.

The exact duration you can stay depends on the airline’s booking policies and flight availability. 

Pros of Round Trip Flights

Round trips from the same airlines are almost always cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Round trips for international flights are especially cheaper than purchasing two one-way tickets from the same airline. 

2. Lower Taxes

You only have to pay sales tax once with a round-trip flight.

3. Fewer Cancellation Fees

You’ll only be charged a single cancellation fee if you cancel a round-trip flight.

But if you cancel two one-way flights, you’ll pay cancellation fees for both flights.

One-Way and Open-Jaw Flights

A one-way flight is a flight from one destination to another destination that doesn’t include a return flight.

An open-jaw flight i s when you travel from your location to a first destination.

Then you travel to a different subsequent destination(s) and return to your original location from one of the subsequent destinations. 

For example, you could fly from New York to Paris. Then drive from Paris to Berlin and fly from Berlin back to New York.

Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

As COVID-19 continues to alter world travel , heading out on a multi-country trip might be more complicated than it has been in decades. Going to Venice in the winter might mean grayer skies but fewer crowds. Heading to Kenya and Tanzania in April is likely to mean fewer humans, but not fewer chances to spot wildlife, all while saving money on safari.  Also keep in mind that mom-and-pop locations have their downtime and holiday seasons as well; don't be too surprised if your local bakery in Paris is closed for a holiday week or two in August.

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Had to change aircraft due to a faulty door. Surprisingly it only caused about an hour and a half of delay. Delta handled this situation as well as can be expected.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

Paid premium for Delta only to be on safe but tired old 767 with ancient cabin in mediocre condition. Poor wifi and horrible inflight entertainment. Hardly a premium experience. Should have flown SW and had fun flight crew and no pretense

Our flight to Zurich was delayed by almost 3 hours, so we missed our next flight. There was no indication it would be delayed this much. We were told the gate had changed and then it apparently took over 2 hours to load the "catering" on the plane. We were not compensated in any way for the trouble.

Rated entertainment as Mediocre as there were major problems with the Infotainment system that took probably a half hour for them to fix.

Your crew could maybe answer the call bell at least one of the times I pressed it. I pressed it first time with 2.5 hours left in our flight bc my partner was hungry and wanted a sandwich. We finally got the sandwich with 40 mins left in the flight.

Delta crushed it. Flight attendant in first was attentive and just never stopped. Honestly one of the best domestic flights I’ve been on.

They were an hour late and they didn’t have my wheelchair for me

The Flight crew didn’t serve us until about 1.5 hours into the flight because of turbulence but after it ended it was fine to move around. They served us water only and snacks and then NEVER, NOT ONE TIME came through to collect trash until right before landing about 1.5 hours later. There was absolutely no need for that. They crew was just standing around talking and visiting with each other and really never tried to see if we might want something besides water or even try to come pick up trash. This is VERY unusual for a Delta flight but it was not what I would have expected for a 4 hour flight.

The flight and boarding were easy peasy. I was traveling with my 4-year-old, so a smooth boarding experience was especially appreciated. My only piece of feedback is really about where our gate was in O'Hare. They've shoved four gates into a tiny corner of the B terminal and there isn't early enough room or seating for everyone. Not United's problem, but did dent the overall experience.

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

There was no screens on board AND the WiFi didn’t work. My seat was broken and couldn’t recline so I couldn’t even sleep. The flight attendants didn’t offer anything to make it more comfortable. It was such an old cramped plane, when the person in front of me reclined I couldn’t even open my tray table. All the United ads talk about guaranteeing everyone gets a screen!

The Wi-Fi was unavailable on this flight for some reason.

This was a Lufthansa flight, not United. The CSA at the counter, Ashley, was not only incompetent, but quite rude. Me and two other PAX waited over 7 minutes standing in front of her and another CSA and they ignored us. We joked that we must have accidently taken invisibility pills. She could have at least said "I'll be with you in a moment, I'm currently....". I could go on about how rude she and the other CSAs were (whispering, not communicating with me, blaming the situation on others, etc.). She would not work for me. Then, she gave me literally the worst seat on the plane. the worst. My seat kept getting bumped (rammed twice by the crew with their carts and about every 5 minutes by someone using the bathroom), listening to the bathroom all night, crowded seat, etc.

My seat was broken. WiFi didn’t work. Gate crew at HOU were rude and condescending. Treated all the passengers badly. Bad experience, United.

First flight of the day… MINIMUM FUEL! 15 minute landing delay at HOU due to fog turned into a 2+ hour delay! Rather than circle, they had to divert to another city to refuel! Sat on tarmac at Austin to refuel. We ALL missed our connections! The crew, including pilots, were clueless. Crew was really a mess. At HOU, Untied employees were exceedingly rude to all. It was pitiful.

An hour and a half late is UNACCEPTABLE. The negative impact to our family is unconscionable. And for the price we were forced to pay...

The boarding process and flight were great. However, I waited about 40 minutes for my luggage. It did not come up on the designated belt. Instead, everyone’s bags were on a cart. Not sure what the issue was, but we were not informed until another passenger went looking for her bags and found them.

Worst experience flying American Airlines. I fly with them often, so I was super disappointed in the service I received at gate 30 in LGA on May 24, mid-day. The flight was delayed twice. I was patiently waiting in the American Airlines lounge when I received the notice on my app that the plane was boarding 45 minutes before its newly re-scheduled take off of 4 pm (from the orginal 1:45 pm then 3:00 pm). It took me 5 min to travel from the lounge to the gate and when I arrived there at 3:20 flight gate attendant told me the flight had closed and that they announced for passengers multiple times. I showed them the notification on my app and they were really rude and unempathetic. The person who rescheduled my flight at customer service wasn't any happier but was at least helpful in getting me on the next flight.

Flight was 1/2 hour delayed leaving Phoenix. Otherwise it was an average flight. Flight crew on this trip was very nice.

Was lucky to have a employee at the AA checkin counter that had compassion and understood they ordeal that we went through with our original flight being diverted, needing to stay in the aircraft and then flying to the original destination; adding hours to the trip and forcing us to miss our connection and our rebooked connection. Our flight was delayed 4 hours so we would miss our connecting flight, we were not rebooked to our destination the same day, we were not offered any options to get home on the same day despite being clear that we absolutely cannot get stranded at night due to family, we were forced to book our own flights on a different airline to get home, and spririt is refusing a refund because our flight wasn't cancelled, only delayed. oh yeah, and they lost our luggage on the first part of the trip and you cannot get a hold of customer service when anything goes wrong, on hold for 30+ minutes. and their app breaks so you can't use that either.

The crew was the best and very accommodating I know you don't offer any complimentary items but water and coffee will not break the bank !!

My experience with Spirit was perfect. Did not expect it to be this good

My mother was HARASSED AND ACCOSTED by the gate agent for her bag. I pre purchased the bag fee and the gate agent made my 78 year old mother board, deplane, re pay for her bag fee and board again. The gate agent made my mother pick up her own bag and REFUSED to help her, she is an older woman who wasn’t bothering anyone on a flight that had maybe 30’total passengers. I am going to sue this airlines for their HORRIBLE customer service and treatment of my mother, and all this occurred the day after Mother’s Day!!!

For it to have left on time! Instead of two hours early with zero notice

Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

Kayak does not know that spirit airlines charged me $70 to fly. But the bag check-in was $89 each way. This is false advertising to lure people. Spirit airlines sends bunch of emails after flight purchases to buy wifi, better seats, priority boarding, secure reserved seats. This is false advertising. Up front pricing. I would of flown jet blue or Alaska airlines.

Every interaction the airline seems to want to find a different way to extract more money from you. The second leg of our journey they wouldn't let us board the plane without taking another $99 for a bag we asked about at the ticket counter and boarded with on the first leg of our journey. Horrible airline, poor culture. Not flying Spirit again.

It was ridiculously hard to check in for the flight, and Frontier charged us a LOT of money to have a carry on suitcase, and then told everyone we could not carry on bags and had to check them through at the gate, and didn't refund the extra money we paid to have the suitcase as carry on.

I had a terrible experience with Frontier. I arrived before the 60 minute cut off and was told that Frontier has a two hour window for bags. I was then told the next available flight wasn’t until the end of the day (I had booked a 6am flight). I took a look around and saw other people being told that they could not board their flights or that they had to pay additional fees. I opted to rebook on American Airlines. There’s absolutely no straightforward way to contact Frontier, so this ticket was a complete waste of money. Oh - and the kicker is that the lady lied about the two hour cut off.

Frontier won’t help you at the airport without paying $25. Carry on was $75. Then you get on the plain and every beverage or snack is also a charge. Seats are hard and real packed in. I would never fly them again.

Worst experience I have seen. The flight was cancelled without any reason.

My experience with frontier staff at the Denver airport was absolutely horrible. The manager on duty was even worst if was the worst experience I have ever had, I have never been treated so poorly as a customer in my life! The staff was extremely rude, eye rolls and attitude and then refusal to help me at all. I wish I could never fly frontier again that’s how horrible it was!

The Frontier app wasn’t working. So I could not pay for a carry on the week prior to flying. They charged me 99$ at the gate to carry on a duffle bag.

Good for the price. My only complaint is that the pilot should keep the air flowing while passengers are waiting to getting out of airplane.

Plane could have been more on time. More leg room .

I arrived 1 hour prior to boarding, and they said I was too late for a domestic flight. First time I heard that :-(

What is a round-trip flight?

It's one of the first decisions we make when booking a flight: Should I book a round-trip or a one-way flight?

It's typically something you'll think about before you ever click "search" to find flights and airfare.

At face value, it seems like a pretty straightforward choice. Book a one-way flight if you're only flying in one direction, and book a round-trip flight if you'll be returning home ... right?

Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. Thanks to airline pricing trends and our own personal scheduling quirks, there's a bit more to consider.

There may be cases where you wonder if you're better off booking two one-way flights to save money. You may have uncertain plans that make it difficult to commit to a return flight. In some cases, when visiting a few different cities, you may be better off with something different entirely: a multicity itinerary.

There are also plenty of additional considerations if you're booking an award flight using frequent flyer miles or flying internationally.

Here, we break down the basics of what you need to know about booking round-trip flights.

A round-trip flight is an itinerary from one destination to another, with a flight back to the original destination.

In most cases, this is what you probably book when going on vacation or visiting a family member for a holiday weekend.

Let's say I live in Charlotte and want to fly to Arizona for a spring break trip. I book an itinerary with an outbound flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and a return trip to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) aboard American Airlines.

The two flights, booked together on a single itinerary, constitute a round trip.

What is the difference between a round-trip flight and a one-way flight?

When you book a round-trip flight, your itinerary includes an outbound flight and a return trip.

A one-way flight only takes you one direction — say, from Charlotte to Phoenix — with no return flight scheduled.

Is a round-trip flight different from 2 one-way flights?

Yes, in terms of how you book your trip. No, in terms of your travel plans themselves.

Again, a round-trip itinerary includes both an outbound flight and a return trip to the city of origin. A one-way flight is a single trip from one airport to another, with no return booked.

Booking 2 one-way flights

However, if you book two one-way flights, you can, in essence, create your own version of a round trip. This could be on the same airline or on two entirely different airlines.

For the purposes of your travel experience, it's effectively a round trip.

But, know that in the airline computer system(s), you'd technically be traveling on two separate reservations. So, you'd receive different trip confirmation numbers for the outbound and return flights.

Is booking 2 one-ways cheaper than a round-trip flight?

In the U.S., splitting a round trip up into two one-way flights on the same airline and travel dates typically makes no difference in terms of price.

However, on a small number of routes, airlines do charge a premium for one-way bookings compared to the price they charge for a round trip. This is more common internationally, where round-trip flights can be a better value than two one-way trips. Booking two separate one-way flights tends to be more expensive for international travel.

Also, budget carriers frequently offer one-way fares at the same price as a round-trip ticket.

That means if you booked separate one-way flights, you'd most likely end up paying the same as, or even more than, a round-trip fare, depending on the route.

Booking 2 one-way flights on different airlines

On the other hand, there are cases where, thanks to a tool like Google Flights , you might discover that you can save money by booking an outbound, one-way flight on one airline and a one-way return flight on a different airline.

For example, last year, TPG contributor Sean Cudahy needed to travel to North Texas for the weekend. Round-trip flights on a single airline from the Washington, D.C., region to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) were coming in at more than $600 that particular weekend.

However, he saved a couple hundred dollars by mixing and matching: He booked a one-way, outbound flight to DFW aboard Delta Air Lines and a separate, one-way return flight on American Airlines.

Just keep in mind this can be risky. If your flight on one airline gets significantly delayed — to the point that you miss your return flight — your second airline won't automatically rebook you. The airline staff may not have much sympathy for your situation since your troubles happened aboard a different carrier.

Can I book a round-trip flight to 1 city and then return home from another?

Yes. These flights are known as open-jaw or multicity itineraries. Many airlines offer this booking option.

Let's say I want to fly from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO). I'm going to visit Walt Disney World for a few days. Then, I'm going to take a Brightline train to South Florida and spend a few days at the beach before flying back to New York.

Since these are airports heavily served by JetBlue, I'll use that carrier as an example. On JetBlue's website, I'll select "Multi-city" instead of searching "Roundtrip" or "One-way" flights.

I'll need to separately enter each leg of the trip. Let's do a Saturday departure from Newark to Orlando, and then a Thursday return from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Newark.

You'll end up booked on a single itinerary, with the outbound and return flights linked, but with the different city combinations.

Can I buy a round-trip flight with an open return?

No, not exactly. When you book a round-trip flight, you'll generally have to specify a return leg and date.

If your plans are likely to change, though, what you'll want to do instead is pick a date that's far enough out. You'll need to book with an airline or in a cabin class that doesn't charge change fees. Then, reschedule your return trip once your plans are set. Alternatively, you can book a "flexible" fare, which is more expensive but generally allows easier changes.

Make sure you're familiar with an airline's change-fee policy before booking an open-return round-trip flight. For example, most airlines won't let you cancel or change basic economy tickets.

Should I book mileage or award tickets as 2 one-ways or a round trip?

It largely depends on the route. In some cases, you'll get better award availability if you book two one-way flights. In others, the taxes for two one-way award flights could end up being higher than what you'd pay for a round-trip itinerary.

However, in most cases nowadays, award tickets for two one-way flights and a round-trip flight tend to add up to the same number of miles. Just be sure to check both on an airline's website to ensure you're getting the best possible award availability .

From the Red Square to the Bolshoi Theater, Moscow has much to offer travelers. Tourists booking flights to Moscow are headed right into Russia’s leading financial and cultural center. But don’t let this massive capital city scare you – there’s more heart and soul in Moscow than most people know. 

Once you step off your Moscow flight, your first stop should be the Kremlin. This walled city includes four palaces, four cathedrals, and serves as the official residence to the President of Russia. Next to the Kremlin is the Red Square, most famously used for parades and demonstrations. First time travelers on flights to Moscow will likely recognize the colorful domes on top of Saint Basil’s Cathedral, situated inside the Kremlin. If shopping is your bag, find a cheap flight to Moscow and save your money for Gorky Street (today known as Tverskaya Street) – the most expensive shopping street in Moscow. For the arts and entertainment aficionado, no trip to Moscow is complete without a stop at the Bolshoi or Maly theaters. Sweltering hot summers and bitter cold winters are typical for Moscow. November to April has lots of snow and rarely sees a temperature above 32 degrees (F). Winter temperatures below 0 are common and the teens are typical. December snow lasts until April, and there are about six hours of daylight. Spring thaws the city, bringing lots of mud, slush, and warmer air. Summers reach the upper 90s in July and August and are very humid. July and August also have thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Fall is short and the snows begin again in October.

Peak Season:

July and August are the peak tourist months in Moscow. Visitors overrun the city and Moscow flights, train tickets and accommodations can be difficult to come by.

Off Season:

Late spring and early fall are good times to visit Moscow. The weather is typically mild, although still unpredictable. Late May and late August tend to be warm and sunny.

Winter has the fewest tourists, and the snowscapes are breathtaking, as is the bitter cold. This is also the best time to find cheap flights to Moscow.

The cheapest and best way to get around Moscow is by metro. Purchase your ticket at one of the metro stations, which are decorated with artwork and sculptures. You can buy tickets for single or multiple trips. For areas that the metro doesn’t reach, take a tram or bus. Tram and bus tickets are cheapest at metro stations or kiosks, but you can also buy tickets from the driver. Make sure you validate your ticket when you board the bus. Marshrutky (minibus shuttles that drive along bus routes) and taxis can be flagged down for short trips. It’s easy to get private cars confused with taxis, so make sure you agree on a fare ahead of time. If you’re going to the airport, or taking a long trip, you should call ahead for a taxi. If you do rent your own car in Moscow, take note of the rules. Honking is only allowed in emergencies and your car must have seat belts, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher and an emergency triangle or red light. If you can, avoid driving at night. Drunk driving happens often, despite being illegal.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME) is located 26 miles (42km) from central Moscow. It serves the area alongside the depressing Sheremetyevo International Airport, offering passengers a modern and much more cheerful entry point to the proud culture and history of Russia.

Processing more than 22 million passengers each year, flights to Moscow Domodedovo Airport come from all over the world, including major cities such as London, Cairo, Hong Kong, Madrid, Athens, Berlin, Vienna, Dubai, Tokyo, Barcelona, Houston, Singapore, Lisbon, Washington DC, Tel Aviv and Doha.

The airport also serves a number of domestic routes, and many passengers pass a few hours here on their way to St Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk and other Russian cities. The huge numbers of passengers in a relatively small facility mean long queues are a common experience.

In early 2011 Moscow Domodedovo Airport was hit by a terrorist attack, so security has been much tighter ever since. It’s best to leave plenty of extra time for delays when catching a flight from the airport.

Located 18 miles (29 km) north-west of central Moscow, Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) is Russia’s second largest airport. In 2010 it handled over 19 million passengers.

With Terminals A-C on the northern side of the airport’s two runways, and Terminals D-F on the southern side, the airport spans a massive area and therefore requires travel time of up to 20 minutes between terminals. Various retail and duty free stores are scattered throughout all terminals, parking lots are conveniently located near to each terminal, and transport to and from the city is plentiful, and facilities are neat and tidy. Although chaotic at times, staff at Sheremetyevo International are generally friendly and airport processes efficient.

American arrested for bringing ammo to Turks and Caicos released, others await sentencing

One American tourist who was visiting Turks and Caicos was released from custody on a 12-month suspended sentence and given a fine while four others await sentencing.

Bryan Hagerich , a Somerset County, Pennsylvania resident, was released from custody on Friday and ordered to pay a $6,700 fine, according to a News Nation article. 

“I’m thrilled to see Brian Hagerich home to Pennsylvania,” Rep. Guy Reschenthaler wrote in a X post, formerly known as Twitter. “It’s time to bring me other four Americans still detained in Turks and Caicos home, too.” 

A group of U.S. lawmakers visited Turks and Caicos this week. The delegation sought the release of Hagerich and four other Americans held on similar charges.

Why is ammo not allowed in Turks and Caicos?

The island cracked down on firearms and weapons within the country after implementing harsher gun laws in 2022. This was emphasized in a September 2023 alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas .

No ammunition, firearms or other weapons are not permitted in the Turks and Caicos. If a traveler is found with any of these items, they will have to serve a minimum sentence of 12 years, the embassy said . 

The embassy also said tourists can declare that they have weapons within their luggage, however, Turks and Caicos authorities will not be able to secure their release from custody. 

As more Americans visit the tropical island they are being detained for stray bullets begin found within their luggage.

Sharitta Grier , 45, an Orlando, Florida resident, was charged with one count of possession of ammunition, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force said. 

During a routine search at the Howard Hamilton International Airport, Grier allegedly had ammunition in her luggage. Grier was charged on May 14 and appeared before the Magistrate Court on May 16, police said. 

Police said Grier has a sufficiency hearing on July 5. 

Ryan Watson 

Ryan Watson , 40, was arrested on April 12 and charged with possession of ammunition after a routine check at the airport, police said.

Police said on April 24 Watson appeared in court and was granted $15,000 in bail under the following conditions: 

• Not travel out of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) without the court’s permission
• Surrender his passport, and all other travel documents to the court
• Report to Grace Bay police station on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Reside at the given address in Providenciales; any address change will be provided before the court

Watson will have a sufficiency hearing on June 7. 

Tyler Wenrich

Tyler Wenrich , 31, a Virginia resident, was charged with possession of ammunition, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force said. 

Police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force arrested Wenrich on April 23. Wenrich traveled to the island on a cruise ship and while going through a security checkpoint ammunition was discovered, police said.

Police said Wenrich is in custody at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. He is currenting waiting for aNhearing on June 7.

Michael Lee Evans

According to reports, Michael Lee Evans, a 72-year-old man from Texas, was arrested and charged with possession of ammunition back in December of 2023.

Evans was allowed to go back to the United States on bail due to his health while he awaits his sentencing next month, multiple outlets state.

Ahh, the City of Sails! After years of travelling the globe, Auckland still remains one of my favourite cities in the world… in my humbly biased opinion.

The reason for my incredibly high praise is not because of the usual city highlights one enjoys. Sure, the food is incredible, the nightlife is fun, and the parks are pretty. The real reason I love Auckland is because it’s built on 52 volcanoes, is surrounded by the sea, and if you travel in any direction for around 45 minutes, you’ll find yourself on a beach, in a jungle, or on an island! 

After seven years of living in Auckland, I’ve had my fair share of day trips. I am not much of a city gal myself, so I spent most of my weekends hitting the roads (and seas!) in search of a dose of adventure. And I can tell ya, Auckland does not disappoint. 

In this guide, I’ve collated the best day trips from Auckland (with or without a car). Whether you’re up for a mountainous escape, a day sunning at the beach or wining and dining on a quirky island… I’ve got you covered.

Getting Around Auckland And Beyond

Once you head out of the bustling city centre, Auckland is surrounded by incredible landscapes and adventures to be had… in every direction! That’s what travelling in New Zealand is all about, right?

But, how do I get around? I hear you say. Well, I’m not going to beat around the bush here, the public transport in New Zealand is preeeettty average.

Having your own two wheels will make your life a hell of a lot easier. But don’t worry, if a rental car isn’t in the budget, there are options.

Here are the main forms of transport to get you in and out of Auckland:

• Rental/ Private car
• Campervan (a personal fav)
• Bus – local and regional
• Hitchhiking/ ridesharing

The cool part about staying in Auckland without a car is that you can jump on the ferry from the city centre! The ferries can take you to some pretty incredible islands which make the perfect day trips from Auckland.

The buses are a bit touch and go… they are just about ok for getting around the city but if you want to explore some of the more off-the-beaten-track spots from Auckland, they may not reach there. If you’re going to use the buses, I’d recommend looking at the Intercity bus to get between the main cities. Then check the local town buses to get you in and around the area.

If you’re staying in a hostel, you’ll often meet other travellers who want to explore cool spots from Auckland too. If they have a car, get cosy with them and see if they are up for a mate on their road trip. Just be sure to provide cash for fuel and some decent banter…

Or, stick the old thumb out! Travellers and local Aucklanders LOVE a day trip from Auckland, so you’ll find plenty of traffic heading out of the city… why not see if someone will be kind enough to let you hitch a ride ?

If you’re up for jumping on local tours, these guys will most often provide the transport out of Auckland. I’ll pop a few tours that head to my favourite day trips from Auckland below.

If you’re staying in Auckland, you’re in a pretty neat spot for exploring. The city is only a few of hours from some of the North Islands best experiences.

These trips truly are full-day trips and will range from 8-10 hours including travel time. So pack some snacks and prep for a big day of adventure.

Whether you’re up for a trip to Rotorua to immerse yourself in Maori culture or perhaps a trip to Hot Water Beach to soak in your personally dug hot pool – there are some pretty EPIC full-day trips from Auckland. Let’s get into it!

Visit the Rotorua Maori Village & Polynesian Spa Tour

Rotorua is a cultural hub in New Zealand. Nestled right into the centre of the north island, Rotorua is around 2 hours from Auckland. The town itself you can smell a mile away… literally, the city smells like rotten eggs! The city is located on a base of incredible geothermal energy which rises up as Geysers and releases smelly steam. Don’t worry, you get used to the smell pretty quickly.

Not only are the Rotorua Geysers at Te Puia amazing to see. But the Maori Village and Polynesia Spa are two other attractions in Rotorua that are well worth a visit. During your travels in New Zealand, it’s important to take the time to learn and appreciate the Maori history and culture.

One of the best ways to do this is by joining a Rotorua Maori Village & Polynesian Spa Tour . This tour is ideal if you’re staying in Auckland as it’s done as a day trip.

Take a Journey to Hobbiton

One of the most popular day trips from Auckland is of course… drum roll, please… Hobbiton! Travellers flock to New Zealand from all over the globe and visit the Hobbiton Movie set . Some people even get married here!! Yep… there are some BIG fans out there.

A trip to Hobbiton is 100% worth your time and travel bucks, especially if you’re a big fan of the films. Explore the shire and hobbit holes, check out the party and follow the same path as Frodo. Stop in at the Dragon Inn and grab yourself a pint of Oatbarton brew or Frogmorten ginger beer.

However, the small town of Matamata, where the set is located, doesn’t provide so much excitement. It’s a two-hour drive south of Auckland. Other than the movie set, the town is a sleepy ol’ farmer town. So a Hobbiton full-day tour from Auckland is a great way to do it.

If you do head down to Matamata, I’d recommend taking a detour to Tauranga. Home to some of New Zealand’s best beaches , it’s a great place to visit in the warmer months.

Discover the Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves are pretty iconic in New Zealand. Glow worms can be found in many places across the country, but not all are as magical as in these caves. The sheer amount of glow worms is insane; it looks like you’re looking up at the night sky full of stars.

The Waitomo Caves are a great family day trip from Auckland. The caves are around 2.5 hours from Auckland, so it is a big ol’ day to visit. But it’s definitely worth your time.

This Waitomo Caves and Kiwi House Group Tour leaves from Auckland and will take all the admin out of your day. The guide will not only take you through the wonderous Waitomo Caves but also through the Kiwi House in Otorohanga.

The Kiwi House is a not-for-profit organisation who are helping to breed our precious Kiwi birds and here, you can see one of the cuties in person.

Explore Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach

Ahh, the Coromandel… one of my favourite places in the world! The Coromandel Peninsula is home to some of the best beaches and day hikes in New Zealand . There is so much to see along the coast and inland of the Coromandel, however, two of the most popular activities for travellers are 100% Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach.

Cathedral Cove is a gorgeous day trip – from the top, you get a beautiful across the ocean and down to the cove and the beach. Cathedral Cove was made iconic after it was featured in the filming of Narnia… and when we, Kiwis, make it into the big time… we kinda make a big deal about it!

To get down to the cove, you’ll need to embark on a short 30-minute walk but you’ll be rewarded with some pretty gorgeous views. It’s an opportunity to slow down your travels and spend a few hours relaxing!

UPDATE : The Cathedral Cove walk is currently closed and the beach is only accessible by kayak or boat. For up-to-date information on the closure, head to the Department of Conservation .

Hot Water Beach is located in the quaint beach town of Hahei which isn’t too far from Cathedral Cove. And to be fair, this beach is pretty fucking cool. You know when you were younger and you’d dig a hole at the beach, fill it with water and pretend you’d made a little hot tub? Well, at Hot Water Beach, that’s literally what happens!

The water at the beach is HOT. So, rent a spade from the local shops and get digging! You’ll be relaxing in your own personal beach tub in no time.

However, if you have more time in the Coromandel, I’d recommend checking out a few more of my favourite spots and activities. These are New Chums Beach, Crayfish Bay and The Pinnacles Hike.

Head down to rugged Raglan

Located two hours southwest of Auckland, Raglan is a pretty unique town. Its allures include its quirky artsy flare, EPIC surf and tough hiking. This little town will easily have you hooked, especially if you’re a little hippy at heart.

If you have your own car, this is a pretty cool excursion and an essential one if you’re into surfing. The waves here can get HUGE. The main spots are Ngarunui Beach (good for all levels, just check the forecast first), Manu Bay (the most famous and thus… the busiest), Whale Bay, and Indicators. Suss which one is best for you, pack your beach essentials and get out there!

Raglan is also home to some epic hikes and waterfalls. The most famous, and my personal favourites, are Mount Karioi Track (which is not for the faint-hearted) and Bridal Veil Falls.

While you’re in town, check to see if the YOT club have any events on (these guys are a cute little club that hosts local artists), head to the wharf for some Raglan Fish and grab yourself a coffee at my all-time fav Raglan Roast .

If you explore beyond the town, the roads can be windy and honestly, a bit cooked (as we, Kiwis, would say). So, drive safe and enjoy this quirky little town.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

These half-day trips are a little closer to the city. The travel times for the activities listed below are between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours as they are all within Auckland.

They can all be half-day trips, allowing you to get home earlier and chill out. However, if you want to make them full-day activities – go for it! Just allow more time at each spot to explore.

So, let’s dive into the best day trips within Auckland!

Visit the Matakana Markets

Ahh, Matakana is one of my absolute favourite ways to spend a weekend from Auckland. The Matakana Markets are just a 45-minute drive up from Auckland and are on every Saturday from 8 am-1 pm.

After scoring myself as many free samples of the local delicacies as possible, I usually eventually land on a coffee from the Matakana Coffee Roasters and my fav, a veggie pie from I Love Pies.

Just behind the markets is a stream, some chairs and often, some live music. There is also a cute AF doggy babysitting spot, where you can drop your dog while you explore the markets. To be honest with ya, I usually spend most of my time here.

A day trip to the Matakana Markets is the perfect way to spend the morning. Once you’ve ventured around the markets, you can also stroll down Matakana’s small but main street which is full of arty shops and cool foodie spots.

If you’re up for making this a whole-day affair, you can head a little further past Matakana and enjoy the afternoon at the gorgeous, Omaha Beach.

Climb Rangitoto

Sitting wide and pretty, you can’t miss the incredible Rangitoto Island when you look out across the city. Not only does it make for a beautiful spectacle at sunset, but a trip over to the island makes for a pretty EPIC day trip from Auckland.

From Downtown Auckland, you can catch the 25-minute Fullers360 ferry across to the island. There are usually two departures a day and a return ticket will set you between $52-$57 NZD depending on whether you book online or in person.

If you’re up for a bit of trekking, be sure to pack some good hiking boots for your trip to Auckland. You will be trekking up New Zealand’s youngest volcano (it only appeared 600 years ago!) and some of the terrain can be rugged. My favourite shoes for travelling and hiking are my KEEN Targhee II Waterproof Mid-Hiking Boots .

Overall, it’s a pretty family-friendly day trip from Auckland. There are many different trials on offers that can either take you exploring various beaches or the most popular, the summit track! It provides some pretty incredible vistas across the sea and the city.

If you’re up for a kayak and a guided tour of Rangitito, this Rangitito Day Trip organises it all for you. From hotel pick up and lunch to cold drinks and sea kayaks!

Ferry to Waiheke Island for Wine and Beaches

Waiheke is the ULTIMATE day trip from Auckland. This quirky little island is the perfect mix of wine, incredible architecture, endless beaches, art and hippies!

Back in the day, Waiheke was known for attracting the artsy, hippy folk who lived a pretty minimalistic life. However, these days, you’ll see a lot of money has made its way over from Auckland to this incredible little island. The island now lives in this cool limbo between the two.

Not only is the island’s culture pretty funky but it is also brimming with some of the country’s best wineries. Endless stretches of vineyard and tasting rooms – count me in.

Waiheke is a 45-60 minute Fullers360 ferry from Downtown Auckland. The ticket will set you back between $44 NZD and $55 return, depending on the time of day you go and whether you buy your ticket online or in person.

If you’re up for winery exploring, you can book yourself into a Waiheke Island Wineries’ Tour and bounce around the best of the best. This way you can sip the wine, eat the nibbles and not have to worry about a thing.

You can also look to catch the buses around the island, the bus routes on Waiheke are pretty good. They run in line with the arrival of the Fullers360 ferry arrival. You just need to get yourself an AThop card before you arrive, as this is how you pay for the buses.

Explore the Waitakere Ranges

Ahh, the rugged west coast! Just west of Auckland, you don’t have to drive too far before you get nicely nestled into the native New Zealand bush. The roads are windy, the bushes are… bushy, the sand is black and the surf is often rough!

A few of my favourite activities in the Waitakere Ranges are Muriwai Beach and its famous gannet colony, Bethells Beach, Kerekere Falls, Piha Beach and the Mercer Bay Loop walk. And if you’re feeling super adventurous, you could give one of the best New Zealand hikes a go, The Hilary Trial.

These areas can be a bit more challenging to get to if you don’t have your own car. If you’re up for a tour, this Waitakere Ranges Wilderness Tour is pretty epic. The guides are super knowledgeable and take around the best parts.

Go Snorkelling at Goat Island

Just Northeast of Auckland, you’ll find the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Not only is this area a beautiful spot to hang out by the water but it’s also brimming with sealife! BYO mask or hire one from the nearby shops and go snorkelling with fishies; keep an eye out for the big string rays gliding along the sea floor.

Another option, especially if the water is a bit cooler, you can opt to hire a clearyak (a glass bottom kayak!). Enjoy the incredible underwater world without having to leave the comfort of your kayak.

Once you’ve had an epic afternoon of snorkelling and chilling at Goat Island. Finish your day trip from Auckland with a stop at the Sawmill Brewery , these guys whip up some liquid gold. Plus, their food menu is pretty damn delicious too.

As you can see, even when staying in New Zealand’s biggest city, it doesn’t take long to find yourself submerged in New Zealand’s incredible nature. Whether you’re up for climbing mountains, exploring Hobbiton sipping local wine, or marvelling at glow worms… there’s so much to see and do from Auckland.

In general, I’d recommend for travellers to spend a limited time staying just in Auckland City. However, you can base yourself here and embark on some pretty epic adventures from here.

The only catch is that Aucklanders LOVE a weekend away too, so the traffic in and out of the city can be hectic. I’d keep that in mind when planning your travels – try to get on the road earlier or late at night to head back to the city. And take snacks and prep a good podcast, just in case you get caught out in some bumper-to-bumper action.

County spelling bee champ earns a trip to smithsonian national zoo.

LISBON — The spelling is over for Columbiana County champion speller Marissa Gatewood, but her Scripps National Spelling Bee experience continued Wednesday with a trip to Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

The 13-year-old Salem seventh grader left the bee in the first round of the preliminaries Tuesday, misspelling the word “agrypnia,” which is another way to say insomnia.

The winner of the Salem city bee and the Columbiana County Spelling Bee, Marissa earned her first trip to the national contest and this was her first time visiting the nation’s capital with her family.

“The experience is fun, it’s stressful, but I’m glad to have the opportunity to be here. Everyone here seems really nice,” she said in a text message.

When asked for any lessons learned while participating in the competition, she said “I learned I need to study more and take it more seriously. I plan on trying again next year.”

Her favorite part of Bee Week so far was the opening ceremony. As for the sightseeing, she said “my favorite part so far is the zoo.”

Marissa said they had not seen a lot so far, but planned on going to see more into the week. During a pre-bee interview, she said she was interested in visiting the Holocaust museum to learn more and also wanted to see other museums and sites in D.C.

She thanked the newspapers for helping her get there. The county bee was co-sponsored by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center and the Salem News, Morning Journal and The Review. The three newspapers sponsored the trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Besides the bee itself, Bee Week includes sponsored activities for the spellers such as a picnic, the opening ceremonies and a banquet at the end, along with touring excursions. The spellers and their families also have free time to go out on their own.

“This has been a rewarding experience for Marissa and our family. The experience of being part of something so large to celebrate accomplishments of children around the nation is awe inspiring. We are so very grateful for Marissa for her efforts and for our sponsors who helped realize the trip and experience we will remember forever,” her mom, Charlotte Leasure, said in a text message.

Marissa was one of 245 spellers from across the country and beyond to participate in the national bee.

The preliminaries included three rounds, with the second round requiring spellers to orally select the correct multiple choice answer to a vocabulary question read by the pronouncer. The quarterfinals and semifinals were Wednesday.

The 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, will continue tonight with the finals aired live from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. today on Ion.

My successful upgrade on spirit airlines, how to beat budget airlines at their own game, final thoughts.

Spirit Airlines can fall on the wrong end of many jokes and news headlines, and for good reason. Despite this, I’ve been flying the big yellow bus in the sky a bit more in recent months and have learned more about its intricacies and customer experience.

On a quick trip from my home of Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL) to Cancun, Mexico (CUN), I decided to run a few experiments.

In the days before each flight, I was offered the opportunity to bid on its “Big Front Seat,” located at the front of the aircraft, and scored a pretty inexpensive ride to and from home. Here’s how I did it.

Spirit Airlines is well known for nickel-and-diming its customers along the way. These fees can be for carry-on bags (which I easily avoid by using my backpack as a personal item ), picking a seat onboard, buying drinks onboard, or even printing a boarding pass at the airport.

But if you’re a diligent traveler, you can dodge these fees altogether. For instance, I never selected a seat while booking my flight. Since each flight was only 90 minutes, I figured I would be fine in any seat onboard.

But a few days before the flight, I received an email to bid on sitting at the front of the plane.

Spirit Airlines doesn’t have a true first class product, but it does have the Big Front Seat. The service is the same during the flight, but you simply get a bigger, more comfortable chair.

Bidding on Spirit’s Big Front Seat

When you bid on a seat, the email gives you a barometer to pay anywhere from $20 to $250. Because my flight was so short, I bid the $20 minimum.

A few days before takeoff, I was approved for the $20 bid on my Fort Lauderdale to Cancun flight. However, the return home flight was where things got interesting.

When I bid the $20 minimum (again), I was told I was outbid, which was fine by me as I wasn’t willing to spend more than that. However, when I checked the Spirit app again at the airport, I was approved to sit up front again.

I’m still unsure how that happened, but for a mere $40 round-trip, I got a much more comfortable experience to and from Mexico . Next time you fly with Spirit, don’t overlook bidding as you may be able to upgrade your next flight for as little as $20.

If you decide to book a flight with Spirit or any of its ultra-low-cost competitors, there are several things to remember.

First, these airlines are avidly looking for any way to generate additional revenue after you book that ticket. If I’m choosing to fly on a budget airline, I’m trying to keep more money in my pocket by avoiding any of their upcharges.

Here are a few of our expert tips to dodge these fees:

• Avoid upsells. When you book your flight, you will be served a seemingly endless number of offers, such as rental cars, hotels, help at the airport, travel insurance , and more. Simply say no.
• Travel as lightly as possible. These airlines are notorious for expensive baggage fees and seat assignment charges. These fees can negate any potential savings from flying with a regular airline.
• Be flexible with the seat you get. Budget airlines love to charge extra for seat assignments. Try your best to avoid this add-on. And if you’re particular about where you sit, consider approaching the gate agent and asking politely for a different seat assignment to see if they can move you.
• BYOD. Drinks onboard can be extremely expensive. The best way to avoid this is to bring a refillable water bottle and find somewhere in the airport to refill it before boarding — and the same rule goes for snacks!

Despite struggling financially, Spirit delivers great value to consumers looking for a no-frills experience getting from A to B. If you decide to book with Spirit, it’s best to keep your expectations in line and have a game plan for avoiding the airline’s infamous list of fees.

My wife, Suzanne, has generally been a part of this project, going with me to veteran centers in both the western and eastern parts of the state. I will purposefully be sparse about some of the details of those trips in respect to what I’ll later share in the magazine.

My musing about trips to the western part of the state always features the element of accommodation the region shows to visitors. Western Kentucky, I’ve been told by a reliable source, has strong cultural ties to the South, and I believe that their demonstration of “Southern hospitality” springs forth generously.

I once walked into a shop in downtown Henderson and asked for directions to another store in the area. The attendee smiled graciously and began to offer directions, but soon said something to the effect of, “Here, let me just walk you over that way.” And the person did. As I recall, our walk was about a block or more, and the shop attendee seemed exuberant that she was able to help a stranger. Additionally, I don’t remember any other person attending her shop while she ventured away, so she must have felt enormous trust toward her customers while she was absent.

Whether it’s stopping at a gas station, store, or even once at a bank, I’ve found people in Western Kentucky to almost fall over themselves trying to give a traveler like me directions. I almost never feel “brushed off,” and now, when I come across younger people to ask directions, they’ll smile, pop out their smartphones, and use their expertise to quickly find where I need to go. Experience after experience there in nearly two decades of collecting stories demonstrate this; I believe it’s in the DNA of the region. Yep, I muse about things such as this because they help define Kentucky in a positive way.

And heading down Eastern Kentucky way last week on the Mountain Parkway and Highway 15 toward Hazard, I was struck by the natural beauty surrounding the hills and mountains—in a way that I hadn’t before. There’s a “clean” feel about the area, something I couldn’t honestly say back in the mid-1960s as a child when my father regularly led our family in travels across the state. In those days, I recall junk and litter strewn across creek banks and hillsides, and it wasn’t an inviting place. Roads today are better, services are less remote, coal reclamation projects have helped the landscape, and there’s a modern feel—something for which to muse in a pleasant way, and I do.

Eastern Kentucky has always had great people, and I know that from rubbing shoulders with them as college classmates, schoolteacher colleagues, writing friends, and a whole host of others I included in my Kentucky’s Everyday Heroes book series. My hope is that the economy of Eastern Kentucky will grow more diverse and allow for natives of the area to stay if they’d like and to attract more to come and enjoy a land rich in culture and down-to-earth goodness.

Suzanne muses about another thing she likes about Eastern Kentucky, and that is a special bottle of water produced by a company in Middlesboro called Cumberland Gap Mountain Water. The water, according to the company’s web site, “comes directly from deep within the mountains of Cumberland Gap National Historic Park,” and notes that Daniel Boone likely drank that water, as other pioneers did.

And though I tend to judge all brands of bottled water as tasting the same, Suzanne sees the Gap’s water as heavenly tasting. For years, she’s asked me to pick up a case or two on my mountain trips, and at times, I had to search a bit to find, especially when I was not near Middlesboro. But on our trip to Hazard, we found plenty of it at the Food City store. Three cases rode home in our car, and I expect Suzanne will invent excuses to head that way again after the supply dwindles.

A couple of day trips around Kentucky won’t generally fit in the “hard news” category, but they sure can count as times of a-“muse”-ment, and it makes me want for more.

Iran has supplied Russia with drone-launched glide bombs for use in Ukraine, according to open source research into Tehran’s deepening military support for Moscow.

A German military analyst spotted the latest Qaem-5 guided aerial bomb attached to the wreckage of a Mohajer-6 drone in the Russian region of Kursk.

Moscow’s forces have extensively used the Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to carry out surveillance, but this is the first time the Qaem-5 bomb has been seen during the war in Ukraine.

The drone was believed to have been preparing to carry out an attack on the Ukrainian frontier region of Sumy before it mysteriously crashed in a field on the Russian side of the border.

The glide bombs can clearly be seen attached to the wings of the UAV in a video released on Russian social media channels.

“Iranian arms support for Russia at a new level,” analyst Julian Ropcke said.

Iran has repeatedly denied backing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, despite supplying Shahed kamikaze drones , artillery and tank ammunition.

Last week, the US warned Tehran it would face an international response if it provided ballistic missiles to Moscow , after reports that the Islamic Republic had started shipping the weapons to Russia.

The two rogue capitals are believed to have struck a deal at the end of last year with deliveries due to start in early January. But John Kirby, the White House’s national security spokesman, said Washington had not seen confirmation of any missile transfers.

The transfer of glide bombs tallies with the increase in Russian weapons being dropped deep behind its front without challenge from Ukraine’s air defences (glide bombs are difficult for surface-to-air missiles to intercept due to their tiny radar signatures and short flight times).

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, said Russia launched 3,200 guided bombs against Ukraine in April alone.

Russian media celebrated the “triumph of the glide bomb” when the weapons were used to pulverise Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region city of Avdiivka before its capture in February.

Glide bombs are suspected of being used in the Russian strike on the hypermarket in Kharkiv , Ukraine’s second-largest city, which killed at least 18 people on Saturday.

The regional prosecutor said investigators had found an unexploded aerial bomb around 80 metres from the market, which would have caused “many more victims” had it detonated.
