What people love about valle de la luna tours.

A very interesting itinerary, very fun. Glad we did it
Everyone helpful and most tours interesting although latterly a bit repetitive - a salt lake is a salt lake is a salt lake. A lot depends on the other people on these tours and I was mostly lucky. It would have have been interesting to have had more exposure to the indigenous people and their culture and also the old town at Tula

Hi Travel Argentina

"It was a wonderful trek, incredible nature and nice hiking camps! Be aware, you hike 7-9 hours a day for 4 days...this is not for everybody. But its worth it!!! Patagonia is the best :)

"James (tour operator) was incredibly disorganized and condescending with his communications. He was unable to perform basic functions as use the correct name for a bus pass into a different country (Chile -> Argentina). His response was to just use the ticket and no one would check. Not very reassuring. Based on his responses during the trip and his response to previous reviews, I expect him to immediately gaslight me, much the way he did with our private communications, of which I'll happily share if anyone is interested. Happy travels (hopefully with any tour operator besides this one)!

A Tour of Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, Chile

This is what it’s like going on a Valle de la Luna tour in the Atacama Desert. Just get ready for the most beautiful landscapes in Chile!

valle de la luna chile

The Atacama Desert is genuinely one of my favourite places in the world – there’s just no where quite like it.

With bubbling geysers , mountain lagoons and alien landscapes, it really does have some of the most bizarre and varied landscapes I’ve ever come across.

If you’re heading to the Atacama Desert, I’d really recommend a tour of Valle de la Luna, the Valley of the Moon – it’s all in the name really but this place is out of this world!

valle de la luna tour

My experience of Valle de la Luna

We sat on a rock together, heads turned right, eyes firmly locked on the horizon.

Despite the fact that there were dozens of people around us, we were felt like we were the only ones there, the only ones to witness this beautiful moment.

At first there was the bright orange of the sun burning brightly before slowly turning a deep purple colour as it descended behind the rocks off into the distance, blanketing the valley floor in darkness.

Around us there was a deafening silence, then an almost audible sigh after the sun had set. The spell was broken; people started to talk to each other again turning to walk back to their cars and buses, happy to head home for the day.

We just sat there though, eyes still firmly locked on the horizon, smiling.

As for magical moments, watching sunset in Valle de la Luna has got to be up there.

Taking a tour of Valle de la Luna

After taking a tour of the El Tatio geysers that morning, that afternoon saw us visiting Valle de la Luna on another tour.

This place is just 30 minutes west of San Pedro de Atacama and as soon as you enter the valley floor it is easy to understand where the name comes from.

Large white rocks carpet the ground while giant red cliffs tower either side. Cutting through the middle is a road. Just the one road, and it is actually quite eerie driving through here.

You can check out some of the best Atacama desert tours here. There really are so many amazing options to choose from!

Visiting the Salt Caves in Valle de la Luna

Our tour started at 4pm and our first stop was at Cuevas de Sal, a place made out of soft salt/sandstone rock.

Because this rock is made out of salt and sandstone, it literally washes away when it rains here, so every year the scenery changes with new channels and gullies being carved into landscape.

One such gully actually formed a tunnel through the rock, and walking through this I couldn’t help but think I was in a scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (that’s the little boy in me).

Once through to the other side, the landscape changed again, and for the first time we could truly see the Valle de la Luna.

Vero, our guide for the day, explained to us how this landscape was formed, at how the rocks are always constantly moving and changing here.

To highlight her point, she asked us all to close our eyes and listen for a minute. Every now and then you could hear the audible crack of rocks moving, as if fissures were opening up all around us (don’t worry, they weren’t).

It’s hard to describe, but being there, hearing that, it made you appreciate just how changeable Cuevas de Sal is, and it’s strange to think that people who come here next year will see something very different to what I saw.

The Amphitheatre in Valle de la Luna

From Cuevas de Sal we drove through the middle of the Valle de la Luna to a place called the Amphitheatre, a huge red rock protruding from the earth that looked more akin to Mars than the moon.

While being on the valley floor seeing those cliffs around me, I knew we had to climb to the top of one, and once we got to the top we were afforded the most beautiful views of the valley before us.

I know it sounds clichéd but they really are out of this world!

valle de la luna tours

The Great Dune in the Atacama Desert

After climbing to the top of a cliff and seeing the amphitheatre, we headed over to the Great Dune. As the name suggests, this is a massive sand dune, and there’s just the one here.

Getting to the Great Dune is a short 20 minute walk from the car park, and at first you don’t really know what you’re walking towards as you can’t see it, but after a little climb up one of the cliffs you finally see it.

It seems so surprising that there’s just one enormous sand dune here, but that’s what I love about the Valle de la Luna and the Atacama Desert; no matter where you go here you come across some of the world’s most astounding views, and despite only driving for five to 10 minutes from place to place the landscapes are just so different.

atacama desert tours

Valle de la Luna Sunset

Finally, no trip to the Valle de la Luna would be complete without watching sunset in the desert. Here, with the endless landscape before you, you truly get a sense of how deserted and desolate this place is – no life lives here, nor will it. Only rock and sunshine.

As the sun sets, it’s stunning watching all the surrounding landscape change colour from yellow to orange, then from red to brown, until everything is blanketed in a deep purple colour, almost like a velvet curtain has been pulled over your eyes.

There’s a reason why they called this place the Valle de la Luna, and at times it felt like we were transported a million miles away, just us walking around this otherworldly setting. It really is staggering at how beautiful this place is.

Top tips for Valley of the Moon

 • Drink lots of water – Obviously you’re in one of the hottest, driest places on earth, so make sure you have LOTS of water. Like lots and lots of water.
 • Wear comfortable shoes – The number of people I was in flip-flops *shakes head sadly* The Valley of the Moon is a desert so make sure you wear comfortable shoes. I would always recommend trainers or hiking shoes for this place
 • Bring a couple of layers – After your spectacular Valle de la Luna sunset, it can get very cold very quickly in the desert, so bring layers so you can get changed.
 • Don’t forget your camera – I won’t tell you how many photos I took in the Atacama Desert but it was easily into the thousands. Make sure you don’t forget your camera here!
 • Leave a little tip – If you’re on a tour of Valle de la Luna then it’s always a good idea to leave a tip with your tour guide as a sign of appreciation.
 • Don’t leave any rubbish – You’d be surprised at how much rubbish I saw while in the Atacama Desert. Don’t be a part of the problem and take all rubbish with you.

How much does a tour of Valle de la Luna cost?

A tour of Valle de la Luna costs approximately £16 ($20) and includes all transport costs.

Make sure you bring an extra £3 ($5) for the Valle de la Luna entrance fees as these are not included in the price.

Valle de la Luna – Moon Valley

 • valledelalunachile.com/

We begin our journey with the blessing of the Tres Marias of quartz and granite that guard the entrance to the valley.

Around these sculptures, the hidden salt in the sand glows like fragments of stars and the absolute silence makes us believe at times we have been transported to the natural satellite that accompanies our sleep every night.

What an incredible feeling!

With one last look to those carved by the wind women and to the endless desert , we begin the journey to the mystical Moon Valley.

Our next stop on this lunar landscape are the salt caves with their ocher rock walls and unpredictable nature trails.

Without much thought, we enter this labyrinth and move cautiously to avoid tripping over a mound that grew more tan expected.

We continue advancing and darkness falls like a heavy curtain, alerting us that is time to awake our senses.

Is that how it feels being in an adventure movie?

When we go out to the light and finish the tour, we share a look that says we need to repeat the feat in the near future.

Finally, eager to see the Moon Valley in all its majesty, we head to the Great Dune.

We are lucky because we arrive just at sunset when the mountains of salt are transformed into a dance of colors, shades and lights that moves us deeply.

The hours pass quickly: suddlenly the night falls.

El Valle de la Luna, Chile – The Moon Valley: A Travel Guide

El Valle De La Luna, Atacama, Chile

Find out everything you need to know about visiting El Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert, Chile.

Rugged lunar landscapes, sand dunes, deep valleys and salt caves. Welcome to Chile’s Atacama Desert – the driest place on earth.

It’s not everyday you feel like you’ve departed this planet, for another. It’s a feeling I’ve experienced once before when I visited Cappadocia in Turkey , ballooning over the bizarre moon-like rock formations.

When I reached the Atacama region of northern Chile I genuinely felt like I’d landed on the moon… or Mars… or anywhere really, but Chile.

After flying from Santiago to Calama, we hopped on a bus to the tourist town of San Pedro de Atacama, right in the heart of the Atacama Desert.

As I walked down the town’s main street I was overwhelmed by the number of tour companies, each with the same offerings. In short, you can’t visit this part of the world and not see the picture perfect lagoons, salt flats, bubbling geysers and the lunar valley.

Lagoon on the way from El Tatio Geysers to San Pedro De Atacama

Taking A Tour Of El Valle De La Luna

12 hours on from my 4am trip to El Tatio Geysers , it was time to hop back on board the bus to tour El Valle de la Luna – the moon valley. I was pleased to be reunited with Veronica – our warm, friendly tour guide from that morning.

This tour would take us to see salt caves, rock formations, sand dunes and finish with sunset over the lunar valley. But could anything top the morning’s geyser tour…?

Visiting The Salt Caves In El Valle De La Luna

It took around 20 minutes to reach the first stop, Cuevas de Sal Cañon, or salt caves. Impressive rocks, a pale rusty colour jutted out in long ridges and peaks. On close inspection they were beautifully intricate, as though cascading waterfalls had frozen and been turned to stone. Some areas were bright white from the build up of salt and minerals.

However… we were here to see caves, so it was time to get inside! While I don’t suffer from claustrophobia, those who do may want to skip this part of the tour – it’s a tight squeeze in places.

Using our mobile phones as torches, we edged inside and started to clamber over and under the rock formations. It was incredible to see the beautiful glistening salt crystals close up, like expensive diamonds… particularly when illuminated by torchlight.

Inside the salt caves, Atacama

We weaved our way through the narrow tunnels for around ten minutes before reaching daylight again. We clambered up to a high point on the jagged rocks and took in our surroundings. It was baking hot, and against the bright blue sky, it really was a magical view.

Salt caves, Atacama

“Shhhhh” Veronica said. We sat in silence, enjoying the peaceful spot. A minute later she asked what we had heard. “Creaking?” a member of the group asked inquisitively. “Exactly,” Veronica replied. “These rocks are always moving – expanding and contracting…” Forgetting the geography, it sounded to me more like old souls trapped inside the rocks groaning to get out. Not somewhere I’d want to hang around after dark…Eeerie!

Emerging from the salt caves, Chile

The Valley Of The Moon, Chile

We drove through the incredible valley of the moon, past white craters of salt, rusty red rock cliff faces and perfect sand dunes. Feeling adventurous, we climbed up a steep path, attempting to grip onto crumbling rocks to reach another incredible viewpoint. As I looked out, it really was like being on another planet.

Driving through El Valle De La Luna, Chile

The sky the bluest of blues, the rocks contrasting beautifully in their orange tones, dusted by bright white salt and then a perfect sand dune in the distance. Ok, this tour might just beat the geysers after all, and could perhaps be shooting to the top of my list of best places in South America !

Driving through El Valle De La Luna, Chile

Exploring The Sand Dunes In El Valle De La Luna

The sand dunes in Atacama seemed totally different. They were centred around one ridge (the Great Dune), which has been weathered by the wind over the years, with a few smaller dunes beyond, speckled with white rocks.

Great Dune - El Valle De La Luna, Chile

Even though there were a lot of people enjoying the same view, there was a strange feeling of tranquility. I enjoyed the hike to the top and it was special to look out over the dunes.

Sand Dune - El Valle De La Luna, Chile

Sunset At El Valle De La Luna

We raced on to our final stop, reaching the viewpoint overlooking El Valle De La Luna just as the sun was setting. Sunsets have the power to transport you to another place – and this one, overlooking the jagged rock formations, craters and salt patches was one of those.

As I soaked up the last moments of warmth I reflected on my magical day in Atacama. Bubbling, exploding geysers, mirror lagoons, salt crystal caves and now the moon valley. As days go, this one will be hard to beat.

5 Top Tips For Your Visit To El Valle De La Luna

 • Be sure to wear hiking boots, walking shoes or heavy duty trainers. There’s uneven ground in the caves and I felt like I spent half the day clambering rather ungracefully up and down rocks and sand dunes!
 • Bring a layer or two. I got a bit chilly once the sun started to set at our final stop. I had a scarf with me but would have appreciated a light cardigan or jumper. Not only did the temperature drop quickly, it was also quite windy.
 • Water and suncream. Vital wherever you go in the driest place on the planet!
 • Fitness. You don’t need to be terribly fit for this tour, but there were a few steep climbs. It’s worth bearing in mind if you find walking tough as you’re on your feet most of the afternoon. The guide should be able to adapt the tour accordingly.
 • Photography. As with El Tatio Geysers , this is another very photogenic place. Watch out for sand getting in your camera. I learned the hard way in the Sahara so used my phone for a lot of the photos in the sand dunes here!

Prices for trips to El Valle de la Luna Moon valley group tour: $67 / £56 booking via Viator or book locally with a tour operator in town Lunar valley entrance fee: $7 approx / 6,000 Chilean Pesos

If you haven’t looked already, I’d recommend reading my guide to taking a sunrise tour of El Tatio Geysers too.

These photos are absolutely breath taking! The sand dunes look majestic, so vast and smooth. This looks like an amazing place to visit!

Hey Diana – thanks so much! It’s definitely one of the most photogenic places I’ve ever been. Have you got any plans to visit? I’m sure you would love it too! Cx

Hey! Thank you so much for the tips here! My husband and I are headed there next week. Where do you recommend to go see the sunset in Valle de la Luna?

Hi Malvika, I hope you’re having a great time out there! We visited on a tour and they took us to an amazing viewpoint overlooking the lunar valley. Maybe check in town for the exact name if you’re travelling independently? Thanks!

The Discoveries Of

Visiting the Valle de la Luna: The Atacama’s Spectacular Moon Valley

So you’re planning to visit the Valle de la Luna in Chile’s Atacama Desert? Excellent choice. Here’s everything you need to know for the perfect trip.

There are few places on Earth as mesmerising as the Valle de la Luna in Chile. Once you get there, you won’t even feel like you’re on this planet.

It’s not the type of destination that’s high on most people’s bucket lists. The idea of visiting one of the world’s most arid places, as opposed to the dreamy landscapes of the Mediterranean, is, well, a bit niche.

So why should you make visiting the Valle de la Luna a priority? Stick around to find out.

Take a look at my top picks for things to do in the Atacama Desert to get an idea of the thrilling adventures that await you in this otherworldly destination.

Why Visit the Moon Valley, Chile?

Valle de la Luna

An easier question to answer would be: Why not visit Valle de la Luna? There are many great things to do in the Atacama Desert , but if you ask me, this is up there as one of the best.

The Valley of the Moon in Chile is famous worldwide for its rugged landscape, featuring mountains, dunes, rock formations and salt sculptures.

Valle de la Luna’s unique landscape is often compared to Mars. It’s so similar that NASA often uses this area for rover testing for their future missions.

Perfect as a half-day trip or road trip stop, Valle de la Luna’s biggest claim to fame is its sunsets — but if you go for sunrise, you’ll get the same great views, minus the crazy crowds. You only need a few hours to hike through the area, catch some of the beauty, and move on to your next destination.

Visiting Valle de la Luna is the perfect opportunity to live out all your space exploration dreams without ever leaving Earth. Sounds like a win to me.

What You Need to Know About the Valle de la Luna

There are loads of Valle de la Luna facts you’ll probably want to know before trekking out there.

Where is the Valle de la Luna?

Valle-de-Luna-Atacama-Desert-Chile-2.jpg

For starters, where is Valle de la Luna? It’s about 9 miles (15 km) from San Pedro de Atacama, a town in northern Chile.

It forms part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve in the Atacama Desert. The reserve is a national sanctuary, formed in 1990, and is one of the driest places on Earth.

What Will You See When You Get There?

Valle de la Luna

Chile’s Valley of the Moon has a distinct landscape, borne from strong winds, lack of water, and the transformation of salt lakes in the Earth’s crust. All of this shaped the geological features you see today.

Some features include dry lakes, salt flats, mountains, and caverns. It also has numerous salt sculptures, including the most famous in the valley, Las Tres Marias.

Another notable feature in the valley is its rock formations, like the Amphitheatre, a curved rock formation that looks like a crater on the moon. Lastly, there are salt caves within the reserve and colossal sand dunes extending for miles.

When the sun rises and sets over this area, it colours it with stunning hues – starting with pink and orange, eventually turning into dark red. The Moon Valley is one of the most intriguing and diverse places on Earth because it has features similar to the moon’s surface – hence the name.

On the other hand, scientists believe that because of its aridness, it’s the closest linked place to Mars.

Planning Your Visit to Chile’s Moon Valley

Tours to valle de la luna.

Valle-de-Luna-Atacama-Desert-Chile-7.jpg

An organised tour comes with an expert local guide, and with Valle de la Luna’s vast and tricky landscape, it’s better to have someone directing you.

My advice would be to opt for the Valle de la Luna sunset tour , where you’ll get to see the red and orange hues over this remarkable area.

Visiting Valle de la Luna Independently

Julianna-Barnaby-Valle-de-Luna-Atacama-Desert-Chile.jpg

To explore Valle de la Luna without any time restraints, I recommend an independent visit. If you stay in San Pedro de Atacama, you’ll be just a ±13-minute drive from Valle de la Luna.

You do need a 4×4 to reach the Los Flamencos National Reserves entrance, and you must book an entrance ticket at least a day before visiting Valle de la Luna. Expect to pay around $12 — just under £10 — to enter.

If you’re going independently, you can also go to the valley for sunrise rather than sunset and – because pretty much all the tours go for sunset – the valley is a lot quieter.

Valle de la Luna Address

 • San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta, Chile

Valle de la Luna Opening Times

Opening time: 09:00 am in summer/spring and 08:00 am winter/fall

Closing time: 17:00 pm

Where to Stay Near Valle de la Luna

Hotel Nayara Alto Atacama, Chile

Nayara Alto Atacama is a boutique lodge in the Catarpe Valley boasting six pools, an onsite restaurant, a spa, and 42 spacious rooms.

The rooms feature decor with a muted colour palette and natural materials that reflect the surrounding valley. During my most recent trip , I chose the Catarpe room, with a private terrace.

There are several boarding options, from B&B to all-inclusive packages with group or private tours. I went with the inclusive package with a private tour, which is a bit pricey, but it includes all meals, drinks, and tours.

What to Pack for a Visit to Valle de la Luna

 • Lots of water in a large water bottle.
 • A good sunscreen.
 • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots .
 • A lightweight jacket for cooler evenings.

The Valley of the Moon is one of the most visited places of San Pedro de Atacama. It is characterized by its enormous dunes, valleys and hills of salt, rock and sand.

tours valle de la luna

Valle de la Luna ( Moon Valley ) and Valle de La Muerte (Death Valley) are located in the Atacama Desert, and they make up an otherwordly landscape with their amazing geological formations, which have been eroded by the passage of time.

Valle de la Luna is a fantastic moon landscape that is a part of the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range) belonging to the Los Flamencos National Reserve. It is a small depression of salt ground, 1,650 feet (500 m) in diameter, that exhibits odd sculptural shapes. These are the result of a sequence of transformations on the earth's crust caused by the folding of the watery ground underneath the salt lake. Because of its lack of humidity, there is no life here, which has turned it into one of the most inhospitable places on earth.

In the surroundings you can visit the Salt Sculptures known as Las Tres Marías and enjoy one of the most amazing and colorful sunsets in Northern Chile.

Death Valley is located very close to Moon Valley , also in Cordillera de La Sal. This is an authentic abyss and its name arose due to its tragic history, since most of the people who tried to cross it passed away. A proof of this is the remains you can find in the surroundings (both animal and human). Just like Moon Valley , it is recognized for its rock formation and sand dunes, set amidst the uttermost aridity of Atacama Desert. This is why many people consider it the most inhospitable place on earth.

If you have experience and a good physical condition, this is the ideal place to go mountain biking. You can also go sandboarding in the dunes, a very reputable and highly sought-after activity by tourists. The majority of the tours in Moon and Death Valley last between four and five hours, and include a stop in Cordillera de la Sal to see the sunset and enjoy the beautiful colors over the sand mountains.

Location: Región de Antofagasta , 331 km (206.8 mi) northeast of Antofagasta. San Pedro de Atacama is 15 km (9.3 mi) northwest.

When to go: Year round.

Attractions: Cordillera de la Sal, the Great Dune

How to get there: Santiago - Antofagasta: by airplane, public transportation or car. Antofagasta- Calama : via land by public or private transportation. Take Route 5 North, then take Route 25, around Carmen Alto, until you arrive in Calama. From Calama head southeast on Route 23, approximately 57 km (35.6 mi) later you will find the turn off to Valle de la Luna.

Recommendations

We recommend you that you schedule your flight to Calama to arrive in the morning so you are able to participate in the scheduled activities without affecting the itinerary.

This place has a desertic weather and it’s also some meters above sea levels, which means that throughout the year there is a very large temperature oscillation between day and night. The average annual temperature is between 14° C and 3 ° C.

Many of the excursions and tours that are done include visiting places that are in the Chilean plateau, 3,500 above sea levels. This means that people may experience altitude sickness. It is important that people drink lots of water so they keep their body well hydrated. People shouldn’t make sudden or harsh movements, and let their body get used to the heights and the altitude.

There are few ATMs in San Pedro de Atacama. You have to consider that the demand for these ATMs is high, so they don’t always have money. We advise you to bring some cash with you.

Stores in rural areas are open all day, but they close between 13.00 and 15.00. We advise you to carry local currency (Chilean pesos), since it isn’t possible to pay with debit or credit cards in kiosks and rural stores.

Do not throw garbage on the beaches, parks or streets. To take care of our environment is everyone's responsibility. Avoid fines by following the rules.

How to Visit the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert

Ever dreamed of going to the moon? Or pretended to be Neil Armstrong as a child? Going to the moon may be years away, but visiting the Atacama Desert has to be the next best thing. Declared a nature sanctuary in 1982, the Atacama Desert is often overlooked for Chile’s more popular southern region, Patagonia. However, we think the Atacama Desert is one of the most impressive natural wonders of the world.

The Atacama Desert in Chile is full of things to do and natural wonders to explore, but you cannot visit the Atacama Desert without visiting its crown jewel. The Valle de la Luna (or ), known for its lunar landscapes and rock formations, is one of the best things to do in the Atacama Desert. Here’s all you need to know to visit the Valle de la Luna in the Atacama Desert Chile.

How to Get to Valle de La Luna

Visiting valle de la luna on your own.

Valle de La Luna is located only six kilometers from the main city of San Pedro de Atacama. Getting here on your own, however, is not easy as there are no public buses available.

We recommend renting a car while in San Pedro de Atacama to explore the Valle de La Luna as well as other things to do in the Atacama Desert. A rental car is best booked in Calama and picked up on arrival at the airport.

We did see some people biking from San Pedro de Atacama to the Valle de la Luna, however, it seemed like a slog. In the hot desert sun, this would have to be my last option. If biking is for you, however, bikes can be rented from one of the many tour agencies lining the streets of San Pedro de Atacama offering both half (less than 6 hours) and full day rentals.

Taxis in San Pedro de Atacama do exist but are rare. And if you do hire a taxi, expect to pay a pretty penny even for short distances.

With a Tour Guide

Another easy way to visit the Valle de la Luna, if you do not have your own vehicle,e is with a tour guide . There are plenty of tour operators in San Pedro de Atacama with trips only to the Moon Valley or those combined with a larger Atacama Desert trip.

The Best Time to Visit Valle de la Luna

There is no best time to visit the Atacama Desert as the whole year truly is a great time. Temperatures during the summer months (January, February, and March) reach highs of 27 ° C (81 ° F) and lows of 16 ° C (61 ° F) which seems pretty pleasant. And winter (June, July, and August) isn’t much worse with highs of 22 ° C (72 ° F) and lows of 4 ° C (39 ° F). When we visited during the winter months, the temperature was amazing during the day but as soon as the sun went down it quickly became chilly, especially with the wind.

If you do have the flexibility of when to go, the shoulder season is always a good time. Fewer tourists mean lower prices and fewer crowds. The shoulder season runs from September to November and again from March to May.

How Much Does It Cost to Visit the Valle de la Luna

The cost to visit Valle de la Luna varies depending on the time of day that you enter. A ticket purchased before noon costs $2,500 CLP per person and if purchased during the afternoon costs $3,000 CLP per person. If you purchase a ticket during the morning, you can leave the valley and return again in the evening at sunset which is highly recommended.

Things to See in Valle de la Luna

Lunarscapes. Mile and miles of lunar landscapes. Plus a few other rock formations. No really, there are plenty of areas to explore in the Valle de la Luna and you could spend days hiking these extraterrestrial landscapes. But, here are a few our of favorite places that we visited.

Cuevas de Sal Canon

The Cuevas de Sal Canon or Salt Caves Canon is the best place to start your exploring. The small trek through the caves is a labyrinth of twists and turns and ducking and climbing. Some of the spaces are small even for me at only 5’3″, so if you get claustrophobic this may not be the hike for you.

The short hike, or maze, isn’t very long. It is suitable for all ages, however, the elderly may have trouble with their knees.

And, a word of advice. Make sure to watch your head or you will end up with more than great photos at the end of your hike!

The Great Dune

The Great Dune is, well, you guessed it, a large sand dune and the most visited attraction in the Valle de la Luna. The dune offers views of truly out-of-this-world landscapes straight out of a lunar landing or perhaps more accurately a Mars rover expedition with red-tinged dirt stretching out in every direction. Whatever out-of-space location you think you may be in, visiting the Great Dune in the Valle de la Luna will be memorable.

And, if you like sunsets, then you are in luck. The Great Dune is the spot to be to watch the sunset in the Atacama Desert. Just make sure you face the right direction. While the sun sets in the west, the best views are in the east with the sun casting incredible rainbow colors of pink and orange over the Andes Mountains. It was truly an incredible location to watch the sunset in the Atacama Desert.

While it is truly incredible, it is also extremely popular. Don’t expect to get the place to yourself as many tour groups end their all-day tours here with this spectacular view. We recommend going early to grab the best seats. We even took a few beers and dinner to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Amphitheater

Another popular attraction is the amphitheater. The rock formations aligned themselves in such a way that they resemble an amphitheater. While this amphitheater isn’t quite like the ones built by the Romans, it is still quite impressive.

Las Tres Marias

Las Tres Marias, or the three Marys, are three rock formations formed by erosion from salt and the fierce desert winds. I’m not quite sure that I could see the resemblance of three women, but let us know what you think!

Mirador de Kari and Piedra del Coyote

Visiting the Valle de la Luna is impressive, but seeing the whole valley from above provides a different perspective. The sheer magnitude of the desert is awe-inspiring. From this vantage point, you can truly see the vast expansiveness of the desert. Sand and rock formations stretch for miles and miles in all directions with no sign of life in sight. Maybe I haven’t been to the moon, but I bet the view from the Mirador de Kari and Piedra del Coyote gives you a small glimpse into what astronauts feel like when disembarking on the moon.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

 • Water . You are in the middle of the desert, so water is scarce. Make sure you take lots of water to drink as the sun is fierce and you are higher elevation although not quite enough to trigger altitude sickness.
 • Sunscreen. Again, this is a desert! Sunscreen is a must and Hawaiian Tropic with Silk Hydrating Ribbons is our absolute favorite. Trust me, it is worth the extra few bucks.
 • Layers. I sound like a broken record, but again this is the desert! The temperature in the desert can change quickly and drastically. Especially if the wind is blowing like it is prone to do in the Atacama Desert. Having clothes you can layer allows you to adapt to all circumstances.
 • Hiking Boots. There is no worse thing than having sore feet when you are meant to be exploring all day. Quality hiking boots are essential so that your feet don’t get sore (‘your dogs start barking’ as my dad loves to say) throughout the day. I have had lots of hiking boots, and my favorites are those made by Salomon .
 • Camera. Don’t forget your camera . The lunarscapes are incredible, so you don’t want to leave your camera at home.
 • Headlamp. If you plan to visit Salt Cave Canon, then a headlamp (torch) will be handy. You probably could use your phone camera, but I found it helpful to have free hands while crawling through the small spaces.
 • Offline Map . If you plan to explore on your own, downloading a map of the area could be helpful as service is not always guaranteed. No one wants to get lost in the desert.

Where to Stay in San Pedro de Atacama

Figuring out where to stay may be one of the hardest parts of travel. Do I want to stay somewhere flash? Or, should I spend that money on activities and eating or drinking? Luckily, in San Pedro de Atacama, the closest city to the Valle de la Luna, has plenty of options for every type of traveler.

Anka Hostel

Don’t let the word hostel fool you as Anka Hostel is more like a small bed and breakfast with a couple of shared rooms. Anka Hostel is unparalleled with lovely staff, a delicious breakfast, and the perfect courtyard to hang out and make friends or to escape the heat during the day with a book. Chile is a land of dramatic terrain: The thin country stretches for 2,700 miles along South America’s left side and encompasses some of the earth’s most breathtaking mountain peaks and deserts. Now’s the hard part: figuring out what to do. Here are seven suggestions to make your trip to the Atacama Desert worthwhile.

Visiting the Valle de la Luna is one of the best things to do in the Atacama Desert.

1. View wildlife at the Salar de Tara

At more than 13,000 feet above sea level, the Salar de Tara high plateau is about a 60-mile drive east of San Pedro de Atacama , near the border point between Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. The drive is almost as beautiful as the destination, with massive rock structures that could easily be mistaken for Rapa Nui’s moai. Wildlife ranging from flamingos and vicuñas to foxes are abundant in the area. Pack a picnic and relish the scenery, which includes sights of bird life, salt lakes, and the Licancabur, a stratovolcano that sits on the border between Bolivia and Chile and dominates the landscape.

Use the Licancabur volcano to frame the night sky.

2. Photograph the Milky Way at night

The desert, the world’s highest elevation-wise, has almost no light pollution and gets more than 300 clear nights per year, making it very likely that travelers can have an unobstructed view of the Milky Way and plenty of other stars. Get a better image of the night skies with San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations , an agency that offers access to its large-diameter telescopes on its tours.

3. Watch a sunrise at the El Tatio geysers

Though temperatures drop below freezing at the El Tatio geyser field, the view is well worth the chill. Get an early-morning start to see steam erupt from the geysers at their most active time of day (usually between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. ) As sunrise breaks through the clouds, the billowing steam creates a beautiful contrast against the sandy surroundings.

4. Feel like you’re on another world at Valle de la Luna

The deep red rocks and massive sand dunes of Valle de la Luna (which means “Moon Valley”) create an otherworldly scene. Peer closely at many of the geological features here, and you will notice deep veins of salt. Stand close (and be quiet) to hear the rhythmic crackling of the salt because of the pressure in the rocks. The valley itself is 22 million years old, and scientists believe the salt was left behind from when an ocean covered this part of Chile. Just a 10-minute drive outside of San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna is an incredible place to hike, bike, and take in a sunset.

5. Explore the colonial-style church of San Pedro de Atacama

The Iglesia de San Pedro de Atacama is a whitewashed adobe church in the center of town. The parish dates back to the 1600s, although the current building was constructed in 1745 and is now considered a national monument. On any given day, you will find individuals stopping for a moment to pray inside. Take a moment to admire the wood detailing on the walls, roof, and the entrance door, as well as the Catholic figures at the front of the altar.

6. Trek along a rapid river canyon in the desert

There’s a confluence of two rivers in Guatín, about a 25-minute drive north of San Pedro de Atacama. One river is warm and flows from the thermal springs of Puritama; the other, the Purifica, is made up of cold, clear snowmelt from the Andes. Trek alongside this water body and you’ll walk alongside waterfalls, switching back and forth over large rocks. Be on the lookout for different cacti, some of which can grow to more than 20 feet high.

7. Admire the reflective waters of the Altiplanic Lagoons

A 90-minute drive south of San Pedro de Atacama are the highland lagoons of Miscanti and Miñiques, which are at an altitude of 13,860 feet. Bask in the nature here, including the Andes and two volcanoes that have the same names as the lagoons. Watch as birds like the horned coot and Chilean flamingo swoop down on the reflective waters. This site, as well as the Salar de Tara and Valle de la Luna, is located in the roughly 285-square-mile Los Flamencos National Reserve .
