  • Last Updated December 29, 2023

The Aer Lingus pet policy for 2024 includes options for flying with dogs or cats in the cargo hold , but not in the plane cabin . Pets must be at least 15 weeks old to be permitted to travel. On Aer Lingus flights, only qualified Assistance & Service Dogs are accepted to travel in the cabin of the plane. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are not recognised as Assistance or Service Dogs by Aer Lingus. All other pets must travel in the Aer Lingus aircraft hold as cargo. The price varies for flying cats and dogs in the cargo hold, and depends on the route and size of your pet crate. Check out Aer Lingus pet travel reviews, or add your own review if you’ve flown your cat or dog in the cabin or hold with Aer Lingus ! Read on for the full Aer Lingus pet travel policy for 2024.

Only trained and registered Assistance & Service Dogs are permitted to fly in the cabin with Aer Lingus.

If you’re looking for a pet friendly airline to and from Ireland that accepts small cats and dogs flying in the cabin, the airline list is similar to those for the United Kingdom (UK) . In particular, Air France , KLM , Lufthansa and Iberia offer the option of flying pets in the cabin on routes to and from Ireland.

Aer Lingus Pets in Cargo Hold

Aer Lingus uses IAG Cargo , an independent cargo courier, to manage pet flights to and from Ireland . IAG Cargo has decades of experience in flying pets around the globe. However, as with all pet friendly airlines, cargo transport is the most expensive method of flying a pet.

Be aware that your pet must be at least 15 weeks old to travel in the hold on an Aer Lingus flight. But, a puppy or kitten will naturally meet this minimum age due to the requirements of the Rabies Vaccination . When flying pets in the cargo hold, you can transport multiple animals on the same flight with IAG Cargo . However, be aware that when your pet is flying in the hold as cargo, it sometimes isn’t possible for them to travel on the same flight as you.

IAG Cargo transports pets of all species, shapes and sizes, but Aer Lingus may have maximum dimensions permitted for pet kennels in the hold. Always check with IAG Cargo at the time of booking.

For the safety of your pet during air transport, the airline travel kennel must meet the legal requirements of the Live Animal Regulations (LAR) set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Therefore, in addition to ensuring that your cat or dog in their travel crate adheres to the maximum weight and dimensions set by Aer Lingus , the minimum inner kennel dimensions defined by the IATA LAR must also be met.

You can calculate the minimum inner space permitted by the IATA LAR , in addition to learning about the required construction, design etc for the pet in cargo hold travel crate.

IATA dog crate calculator pet kennel dimensions formula airline approved cat dog carrier

Should you need a new travel kennel, check out 4 Popular IATA Compliant Pet in Hold Crates .

As Aer Lingus doesn’t itself handle the transport of dogs and cats in the aircraft hold, the prices vary greatly depending on the route, as well as the size and weight of your pet in their travel crate. IAG Cargo will provide a quote for flying your pet , based on your own specific requirements. Costs will be higher if your pet’s flight itinerary includes connections or layovers at any Airport Pet Reception Centres .

Dogs considered to be potentially dangerous , may not be permitted for travel with Aer Lingus through IAG Cargo. Please check with IAG Cargo at the time of booking.

No live animals can be carried on the Aer Lingus A321 Neo LR aircraft as the cargo holds are not ventilated.

Snub-nosed (brachycephalic) animals, such as French Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian Cats, can have trouble breathing during the flight, due to high temperatures and stress. To ensure their well-being, most snub-nosed (brachycephalic) animals may not be transported in the hold . This means that these pets can only fly in the cabin, they aren’t allowed to travel as either checked baggage or cargo in the hold of the plane.

Since Aer Lingus doesn’t accept pets, other than Assistance & Service Dogs, to travel in the cabin, snub-nosed cat and dog breeds can’t fly with Aer Lingus, as they aren’t allowed in the hold.

Aer Lingus Policy for Assistance & Service Dogs

You may travel with your Assistance or Service Dog in the cabin free of charge with Aer Lingus. It’s recommended that you make the request during booking, but no less than 24 hours prior to departure. All reservations for Assistance & Service Dogs must be made through the Aer Lingus Special Assistance Team .

Your Assistance or Service Dog must be fully trained and accredited by one of the following organisations:

  • Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
  • International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF)

At airport check in, you’ll be asked for the original documentation for your Assistance or Service Dog, and they must also wear their identifying harness and vest. During the flight, your dog will sit between your feet.

Aer Lingus stipulates the following criteria for all Assistance & Service Dogs flying in the cabin:

  • They must be harnessed, leashed or tethered at all times, be clean and well-behaved
  • Dog breeds classed as dangerous must be securely muzzled, with a strong chain or leash not exceeding two metres in length. A person over the age of 16 must be in control of the Service Dog. These rules apply to the following breeds – American Pit Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd and Japanese Akita .
  • Service dogs must be able to fit at your feet, under your seat or in your lap (more than one dog or a large dog may not be seated in your lap).
  • If you’re flying with your Assistance or Service Dog in Business Class , unfortunately, you’ll forfeit the lie-flat chair feature, in order to accommodate your dog on the floor space at your feet.
  • You may not be seated in an exit row, and your dog can’t protrude into, or block, any aisle.
  • Service Dogs fly free provided that they fit in the allotted space. If your Service Dog doesn’t fit into the allotted space, you may be required to: – pay for an additional seat if available or – rebook on another flight with more seat availability or – transport your Assistance or Service Dog as a pet
  • Final approval for travel only occurs at the airport, when it’s determined that your Assistance or Service Dog will safely fit within the allotted space.

Be aware that some international destinations don’t allow Assistance & Service Dogs to arrive in the aircraft cabin. However, this isn’t the case when flying in Europe or North America.

Aer Lingus no longer accepts Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) for travel, due to the 2021 ruling by the US Department of Transport (USDoT) . Only registered and professionally trained Assistance & Service Dogs or Rescue Dogs are accepted to travel in the cabin free of charge.

Note that Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSVDs) differ from ESAs, as they have been professionally trained to perform a specific task, or tasks, for their owner, therefore they can travel with Aer Lingus on routes to and from the US. In this case, you must complete the USDoT Psychiatric Service Dog Application Form , then submit it to Aer Lingus.

All pets other than Assistance & Service Dogs, including Emotional Support Animals, must adhere to the standard Aer Lingus Cat & Dog Policy for 2024 and therefore comply with the size, weight and breed restrictions.

Aer Lingus is an Irish international pet friendly airline, so for flights within the EU and Northern Ireland, your cat or dog has to meet the EU Pet Travel Scheme criteria. This means that you’ll need to arrange either a Pet Passport or Animal Health Certificate , and ensure that your cat or dog is microchipped and vaccinated against Rabies .

You can check out the pet travel laws for entering Ireland , or other worldwide destinations in 2024 .

If you’re worried about your furry travel companion’s wellbeing when flying, check out our comprehensive post regarding pet safety on planes . While in the USA, a monthly report is provided for airline pet incident rates, there isn’t an equivalent in Europe at the moment. So, there’s no data available for incidents when flying pets in the hold with Aer Lingus. Note that even the airline pet incident reports submitted in the USA are only for cats and dogs flying in the hold, and don’t include any in cabin events.

No doubt, at some point your trip will involve a car ride, so have a look at our 12 Essential Pet Car Safety Tips too. Should your cat or dog suffer from motion sickness, we’ve also compared some of the treatments, strategies and medications for pet travel nausea .

It’s important to be aware that you can’t sedate or tranquilize your cat or dog for their flight.

In addition, to protect your pet’s health and wellbeing in a new country, be sure to keep your cat or dog safe from vector-borne diseases . In particular, Heartworm from mosquitoes and Leishmaniasis from sandflies in Southern European destinations pose a serious threat.

Have a look at our Pets on Planes page to find out everything you need to know for flying with cats and dogs. If Aer Lingus doesn’t meet your travel requirements, you can find another pet friendly airline . You might also want to check out 10 Pet Friendly Airlines in the EU or Pets in Cabin from the UK and 6 Transatlantic Pet Friendly Airlines .

And don’t forget the all important Essential Pet Travel Accessories !

Prior to booking, always view the Aer Lingus pet travel policy on their website for any recent changes. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, some airlines are frequently amending their rules for pets on planes.

Have a safe and wonderful trip, and remember to leave an Aer Lingus pet travel review if you fly your cat or dog in the hold!

Guidelines For Travelling With Your Pet

In the previous post, we discussed flying with your pet, so today we’re outlining the general guidelines set out by the authorities to help make travelling with your pet a little easier.

Within Ireland, the DAFM (Dept of Agriculture, Food and Marine) have a list on their website of approved carriers of pets. Aer Lingus & Turkish Airlines are the only airlines officially allowed to transport your pet from Ireland to another country, while carriers such as Pets-on-board and Lufthansa-cargo can transport your pet internationally with minimum fuss. Check out their websites for more details and additions.

  • For the moment, the DAFM only allow dogs, cats & ferrets to travel.

General Guidelines for flying with pets

Most pets are carried in the aircraft hold, a heated and ventilated area for your pet's comfort. Tell the Captain that your pet is on board to guarantee that the temperature of the cargo hold is maintained.

Check with your airline to discover their policy on booking pets. Remember some airlines do not fly pets.

Pets are not allowed to travel in the cabin of most planes. Check with the airline for their process for travelling with a service animal.

Animals need to be 10 weeks or over to travel.

In general, the max weight of the container (which you must provide) must not exceed 64kg/141 lbs - check with your airline to be certain, though.

Certain breeds of dogs are restricted due to the damage they can cause if loose in the holds:

Akita, American Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, Argentino, Fila Brazillero, Mastiff, Pit Bull Terrier, Tosa, Rottweiler.

Snub-nosed dogs or cats such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Pugs or Persian/Exotic cats, will not be permitted due to their inability to breathe easily and cool themselves down. This is for the safety of your pet.

All airlines retain the right to refuse any live animal should it seem dangerous or aggressive.

If the flight is operated by an airline partner, contact them as they may have their own restrictions.

Within the EU

Cats, dogs and ferrets can be taken aboard within the EU without the need for quarantine but there are strict rules.

They must be:

vaccinated against rabies

treated for tapeworm

microchipped

have a pet passport or third-country official vet certificate.

Travelling between Ireland and Britain with your pet

When travelling between Ireland and Britain or within Ireland with dogs, cats and rabbits:

Contact the airline at the time of booking

They’ll charge an extra fee and alert you of the breeds that are restricted from flying.

You must provide your own crate and when you present your dog for check-in, you’re agreeing that the airline is not responsible for how your dog reacts to flying.

Transatlantic

The Dept of Agriculture, Food and Marine must give approval

When travelling between Ireland and America with Aer Lingus, household pets (cats and dogs only) can be booked via reservations as extra baggage.

You will have to pay an extra fee - check with your airline.

Check with your airline on what you need to do if you’re not travelling with your pet or you wish to transport a different kind of animal.

Assistance Dogs

Contact your airline at least 48 hours before travel

With Aer Lingus, suitably harnessed dogs can travel for free in the passenger cabin.

The following airlines/ferry companies have indicated that they will carry pets to/from Ireland within the EU.

Pet Criteria

Aer Lingus only accepts cats and dogs as pet passengers.

At present, Aer Lingus does not allow pets to travel in the cabin of the aircraft.

Checked Baggage

Pets are allowed to travel on Aer Lingus flights as checked baggage. However, they must not be less than 10 weeks in age. The pet must remain inside a carrier throughout the flight’s duration. The combined weight of the pet and the carrier must not exceed 141 lbs.

Pets that are large and are required to travel unaccompanied are transported via the cargo service of the airline. The weight of the pet and the carrier combined must be within 141 lbs.

Emotional Support/Service Animal

Aer Lingus allows passengers with disability to bring assistance dog in the cabin of the aircraft at no additional cost. On each transatlantic flight of the airline, a maximum of eight assistance dogs are permitted onboard. Aer Lingus Carry On Rules: Everything You Need to Know

Aer Lingus Carry-On Policy: Size, Weight, & Restricted Items

Aer lingus carry-on policy, aer lingus transatlantic size and weight limits, recommended carry-on bag, aer lingus regional flight size and weight limits, carry-on size rules for small regional aircraft, related content: aer lingus flight deals, carry-on food, carry-on pet policy, prohibited items and dangerous goods, aer lingus carry-on size and fees.

Aer Lingus is a “semi-low cost” carrier that has both international and domestic operations. They operate as a traditional full service airline for transatlantic routes and as a mixed fare service provider for European routes. This model makes their carry on policy more complicated than other airlines .

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about the Aer Lingus carry-on policy. This includes carry-on baggage and personal item limits, prohibited items, and other restrictions you should know before boarding an Aer Lingus flight.

Passengers are allowed one personal item onboard, as well as a 10kg bag which must be checked in, at no charge. However, you will have to “book a carry-on bag” in advance if you want to store a bag in the overhead bin onboard the aircraft.

The cost for this will start at €5.99 per bag.

aer lingus carry on size

If you forget to book your carry-on bag in advance, be prepared to pay a penalty. Aer Lingus will charge you a €35 fee if you have not purchased a carry-on bag, or if it’s not included in your fare, and you bring a 10kg bag to the boarding gate.

There are some exceptions to the fee, in the following situations:

  • Silver, Platinum, and Concierge AerClub members. This applies to the member only and not traveling companions.
  • Bookings made with Plus, Advantage, and Aer Space fare types.
  • The accompanying adult is traveling with an infant.
  • Customers connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight or a connecting flight with an interline partner.

The personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, and the carry-on bag must be stowed in the overhead bin.

All customers with a carry-on bag with priority boarding (either purchased or included) must check in online or via the Aer Lingus App.

Aer Lingus Carry-On Allowance

Aer Lingus size requirements for a carry-on are different for Transatlantic (Long haul) and Regional flights (Short Haul). If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, Aer Lingus has “size check templates” or “gauge units” located at their ticketing.

Aer Lingus Size Checker for carry-on and personal items

10kg Carry-on Bag

Maximum weight: 10kg (22lb)

Maximum Size:

  • Height 55cm (21.5″)
  • Width 40cm (15.5″)
  • Depth 24cm (9.5″)

Small Personal Item

  • Height 25cm (10″)
  • Width 33cm (13″)
  • Depth 20cm (8″)

If you are looking for a great carry-on bag when flying Aer Lingus on International Flights, I recommend the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable Spinner. I have used this carry-on for years and brought it with me on many domestic and international flights.

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21" Carry-On Expandable Spinner

This carry-on bag has been sizer bin tested to accommodate overhead bin space on most major US airlines.

Case Dimensions:

  • H: 21 in. W: 14 in. D: 9 in.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

It’s durable, reasonably priced, and holds everything I need for shorter trips (3-4 days). Plus the spinner wheels make it very easy to get through the airport quickly and effortlessly.

7kg Carry-on Bag

Maximum weight: 7kg (15lb)

  • Height 48cm (18.5″)

Here is a video to help illustrate:

If the bag is too big or too heavy, you’re going to have to pay a fee, so it’s always better to know your bag size and the limitations in advance.

If you are flying one of Aer Lingus’ regional planes (operated by Emerald Airlines), there is a 7kg weight limit per passenger for carry-on baggage, which must be stored in the overhead locker. Your small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) is also included and must be stowed under the seat in front of you.

If you want to make sure you have a bag that will fit, check out this article on the best carry-on bags for regional jets .

Carry-On Liquids with Aer Lingus

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA in the US and the EASA and European Commission in Europe.  Aer Lingus doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the Authorities.

  • Containers with liquids and gel-like substances may hold up to 100 ml (maximum capacity must be printed on the container).
  • All containers must be carried in a plastic bag (transparent, resealable, max. capacity of one liter). One bag per person.
  • The bag must be presented separately at security. Take your liquids out of your carry-on baggage at the security screening point and present them separately. In exceptional cases, liquids may be opened during security checks and removed from their outer packaging.
  • Liquid duty-free goods purchased at an international airport or on board an aircraft outside the EU must be transported in a tamper-proof, certified bag on connecting flights via an EU airport. The proof of purchase must be inside the bag and the bag must be sealed by the retailer.
  • Medicines and special food (e.g., baby food) can be carried outside the plastic bag and must also be presented at security.

An important thing to note is the classification of liquid foods vs. solid foods.

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel.” This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

The TSA website advises what food can be brought with you on your flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security. Once you get through security, you can bring any food on the plane that you buy at the airport.

Aer Lingus does not allow pets in the main cabin with passengers unless it is a trained service dog used to help a passenger with a disability.

Pets must be booked through a pet agent at IAG Cargo for carriage on Aer Lingus flights in the aircraft hold.

Customers traveling with pets from North America can contact the Aer Lingus North American Pet Desk at 1 (888) 578-4806 (Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST) or via email to [email protected] to make arrangements to bring your pet(s) into Ireland via IAG Cargo .

  • If you are entering Ireland or an EU country your pet must comply with EU Pet Travel rules .
  • If you are entering the UK , your pet must meet the requirements of the UK Pet Travel Scheme .
  • Pets entering the USA must comply with the US Department of Agriculture entry requirements .
  • Pets entering Canada must comply with the Government of Canada entry requirements .

Items considered  “dangerous goods”  are prohibited under the Aer Lingus carry-on policy. A complete list can be found on the FAA website , the TSA website , and/or the EASA website .

One more way to find them is with the Aer Lingus summary of restricted items .

Aer Lingus pilots launch work-to-rule actions, tossing travel plans of passengers into disarray

LONDON — (AP) — Aer Lingus pilots launched an industrial action on Wednesday, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and tossing the travel plans of tens of thousands into disarray.

Pilots imposed ‘’work to rule’’ actions, refusing to work overtime, accept changes in set rosters or take out-of-hours management requests. An eight-hour strike is planned on Saturday.

The flag carrier of Ireland and its pilots have been locked in a bitter dispute over pay, with pilots seeking a pay increase of 24% to keep pace with inflation since their last pay raise in 2019. Aer Lingus has said it is willing to offer pay increases of 12.5% or more if “productivity and flexibility” are discussed.

Ireland's prime minister, Simon Harris, said it is “absolutely vital” that a resolution is found.

“My challenge to the parties now is to bring that engagement forward, rather than putting people through a prolonged period of agony and chaos, and then engaging in the end anyway,” Harris said Tuesday. “This dispute will be settled the same way every dispute is settled: compromise, engagement, sitting around a table. That’s what needs to happen.”
