Group tour on the Wales Coast Path, Cricieth, North Wales

Road trips and guided tours around Wales

Wales is a great place to explore by road, with something new around every corner. Take a guided tour to show you the best of Wales from North to South. Here's some fabulous Welsh road trips you can go on - from 10 day holidays to day trips.

Three days: North Wales experience

South Wales Personal Tours drive you north from Cardiff via the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons)  to Eryri (Snowdonia) for a heritage-focused, small-group tour. The middle day of the three is absolutely packed. You’ll take a trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway , visit Castell Caernarfon  and cross the Menai Strait to Anglesey to see Llanfair PG and Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber . Then you’ll finish off in the traditional seaside resort of Llandudno, ready for a scenic journey back through Mid Wales on the third day.

Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber, Anglesey, North Wales

Five days: variety in North Wales

With  Celticos , you can choose from tours lasting between one and 12 days to discover as much of Wales as your time allows. The most outstanding experience on offer is the five-day North Wales experience which takes you from the coast of Anglesey to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the Llŷn Peninsula, and from the great castles like UNESCO World Heritage Site Castell Conwy to the Italianate village of Portmeirion, and on to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the bridge in the air, another World Heritage Site. Their experienced local guides ensure that you discover hidden gems, meet local people at work and play, and learn about the unique culture of this historic region.

Llŷn Peninsula and Portmeirion Village, North Wales

Two days: West Wales experience

In this overnight tour, South Wales Personal Tours seeks out some of the quirkier places of interest in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, such as the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne, St Govan’s Chapel and St Non’s Well, Petrolheads can worship the hallowed ground at Pendine Sands , site of several successful attempts to break the world land speed record in the 1920s, and on the second day, you’ll have a chance to take a short walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

St Non's Chapel and Well, and Pendine Sands, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

One day: South Wales in a day

If you only have one day for a road trip through the countryside around Cardiff, Roam Wales will make sure you make the best of it. You could focus on Swansea’s Maritime Quarter and the Gower Peninsula, or explore South Wales’ industrial heritage and present day food and drink culture at Big Pit , Rhymney Brewery  and Abergavenny. Another tour shows you a trio of castles – Cardiff , Castell Coch and Caerphilly  – then whisks you into the rolling hills of  Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons)  National Park .

One day: Cardiff food tour

A great value break in beautiful Ilfracombe. Every single member of staff from Roy the coach driver to The Imperial team were so pleasant and helpful. The food was lovely and plentifull. Our first trip with Alfa but we will be travelling with them again.

Hi Happy, We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your holiday and our services from the coach to the hotel and our planned excursions. We hope to welcome you back soon!

Driver was unable to make decisions…

Driver was unable to make decisions about route stops & leaving times. Hotel staff were very nice, but the one-and-only lift broke down TWICE - not good for people like myself with mobility issues!!

Hotel lift broken for weeks but yet…

Hotel lift broken for weeks but yet still they take bookings! £80 for sea view but lift broke so moved to lower floor no refund for sea view , this company is very quick to rip off elderly & people with mobility issues , book elsewhere

Date of experience : 17 June 2024

Hi Lisa We would like to look into the issues you have raised so we have requested some further information, or you can contact us directly by emailing [email protected]. Please include your booking reference.

Pick ups good. Good journey down. Hotel good value. Food good. Lively staff. Lovely position on harbour. Good trips out. Return journey at Burtonwood interchange a fiasco. Had to wait over 90 mins for a coach which had only just set off from Rochdale with lots of drop offs goung home which we didn't have when going. Would have scored 5 stars otherwise.

Date of experience : 09 June 2024

Hi Gabrielle, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed our hotel services. However, we are sorry to hear about your interchange experience. Our team is regularly reviewing ways to improve this part of our service.

Wonderful wight

Just had a wonderful holiday on the Isle of Wight. The hotel, food and entertainment was great. The bedroom was a good size, shower was great. Ian our coach driver was wonderful, very entertaining and funny.

Hi Barbara, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a lovely 5* review. We are so happy to hear that your holiday was enjoyable and we will pass on your comments to the team. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Excellent service…

The fact that our luggage was taken care of from the moment we left our pick up point until we reached our hotel. The excellent driver and very comfortable coach. This was our first holiday with Alfa travel and won't be our last.

Date of experience : 16 June 2024

The holiday was enjoyable.

The hotel was very nice and we had a good time. The amount of food on the plate has, we noticed, been cut back. It was enough for my husband and I but I did hear a few grumbles. We were lucky to catch the feeder coach on the outward journey, the coach driver was early, he said he was unsure of the pick up point and sailed past us as we walked towards it. He did stop just past us because he said he saw the Alfa labels on our cases. We guess he was new, if so he could have been given better information. No harm done but worrying at first, so not a good start to a relaxing break. The tour driver was brilliant… well informed and very cheerful throughout.

Hi Carol, Thanks so much for your 5* review. We're glad to hear that your pick up situation didn't spoil your holiday with us and you still managed to have an enjoyable holiday. We appreciate your feedback and we hope to welcome you back soon.

A good break.

The hotel was lovely, clean and welcoming. The staff were all really friendly, special mention for Milen. Food was good, and served hot. My only complaint was the driver seemed very unsure of himself, and always seemed to park too far away from amenities. Unlike the driver of the other coach.

Hi Diane, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review and for your feedback. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the hotel, staff and food during your holiday with us. We hope to welcome you back soon on another holiday with us in the future.

Friendly coach driver

Friendly coach driver, lovely hotel, very welcoming, all meals were cooked well, great trips, hotel in a great location with views

First time travelling

First time travelling with Alfa it was a great experience from the day trips to the hotel to the meals selection. Will definitely be booking more holidays with them. Recommended.

Hi Paul, Thank you so much for your 5* review. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your first holiday with us! We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Lovely Holiday

Eliot Hotel lovely, staff very friendly and helpful, restaurant staff work really hard and still stay friendly with the guests. The food is lovely great cooked breakfast and other choices and good selection for evening meal. Only downside with Alfa are the amount of drop offs and pick ups before leaving Reading, you feel desperate to get home after a great holiday so spoils it a bit hanging around the service area while you wait for other coaches for instance ones coming back from Scotland ! Surly more mini buses could be laid on ?

Date of experience : 08 June 2024

Hi June, We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us at the Eliot Hotel in Newquay and will pass on your comments to the team. We are always looking to improve our feeder service, we appreciate your feedback and will pass it onto our team. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we hope to welcome you back soon.

My partner and I use Alfa tours upwards…

My partner and I use Alfa tours upwards of seven times a year, albeit on a self drive basis. Our recent visit to the Imperial at Ifracombe was one of the best yet. All the staff were top notch, our catering needs by the chef and his team were excellent. All the Alfa hotels that we visited have been very, very good in every way. We shall continue to use your excellent company for the foreseeable future. Many thanks to all the staff at Alfa. Take care

Hi David, Thank you for leaving us such a lovely 5* review! We are so happy to hear all of our hotels that you have visited provide you with the same excellent service. We will pass on your comments to the team at the Imperial Hotel in Ilfracombe and we look forward to welcoming you back on more Self Drive holidays in the future.

Weymouth trip.

The driver was very cheerful and full of knowledge, the coach was spotless and the hotel was first class. We will be going back to the same hotel in the near future. Between the six people in our group not one had a complaint. So thank you alpha for a great venue.

Fantastic trip to Balmoral our coach…

Fantastic trip to Balmoral our coach driver made us feel safe and relaxed through some challenging roads. Hotel was good as was the food

Hi Susan, We're so glad to hear you had a wonderful time in Balmoral and that your stay was ennjoyable. Thank you very much for your lovely 5* review and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Chris the driver was lovely

Chris the driver was fine, friendly and a great driver especially down the narrow country lanes. The hotel was clean and staff were friendly. There were a couple of niggles (length of journey made longer because of traffic problems, and we would have liked a better vegetarian choice) but not worth dropping your star rating for.

Date of experience : 14 June 2024

Hi, Thank you for leaving us a great 5* review! We're glad to hear that everything went well smoothly and that the couple of niggles didn't spoil your holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Had a fantastic holiday from the moment…

Had a fantastic holiday from the moment we were picked up on the bus til we were dropped back off !...the staff at the hotel were great, helping whenever they were needed , service was brilliant, trips were fun ...would definitely recommend to family and friends...our first holiday with alfa travel but definitely not the last !

Hi Meg, Thank you for leaving us a lovely 5* review! We are so happy to hear that all aspects of your holiday with us went smoothly. Thank you for choosing to travel with Alfa Travel and we look forward to welcoming you on many more holidays.

Our first Alfa experience but definitely not our last

Have just returned from our first Alfa travel coach holiday and can’t sing its praises enough. From the very start the coach was clean and modern, the driver friendly and helpful and the hotel was well located, clean and comfortable. On arrival at the hotel,we were made to feel welcome and were well looked after with the cases delivered to our room. Room was clean, comfortable and maintained throughout our stay. The staff were all very friendly and the food was of a good standard with a varied selection offered every day, delivered to our table by very efficient restaurant staff. The entertainment each night was also of a good standard, the trips choice and activities the same,so overall this was an excellent holiday, good value for money provided by Alfa travel and leisureplex.(Stayed at Monarch Hotel,Bridlington.)

Hi Angus, Thanks for leaving us a lovely 5* review! We are delighted to hear that your first coach holiday with us to our Monarch Hotel in Bridlington was enjoyable. Thank you for choosing to travel with Alfa Travel and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Lovely hotel to stay in. Would recommend!

The welcome we received was lovely. All the staff were most helpful and courteous. The room we were allocated was one of the nicest we have ever stayed in. The hotel was clean and comfortable. What more could you wish for?

Hi Barbara, Thank you for your lovely 5* review! We're so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and everything went smoothly. We hope to welcome you back soon!

Go on a Cardiff Castle Tour

One of the city’s biggest draws is Cardiff Castle, a mixture of Roman, Norman and Victorian architecture strewn around the central green. It offers a fantastic insight into the history of Cardiff as for centuries it was the home of the Butes, the family who transformed Cardiff from a small town into the biggest coal port in the world.

Walk down to the Cardiff Bay

Enjoy a walk along the old Cardiff docklands, now known as Cardiff Bay, a vibrant waterfront filled with restaurants, boutiques and boats. You can go sailing on the large freshwater lake, enjoy a night of opera at the Wales Millennium Centre, and indulge in exceptional dining along Mermaid Quay.

Learn about Celtic culture

A trip to Wales offers the chance to dive into Celtic culture with our Local Specialists. They’ll show you the way of the Celts through food, music and humor, with traditional Welsh dinners and an evening of Welsh music performed by magical harpists and the finest local singers.

Hike in the Welsh mountain region of Snowdonia

Hiking in Wales is one of the best ways to get immersed in the country’s mountains, and Snowdonia National Park offers a grand introduction. Sprawling across northern Wales to the rugged coastline, you can find the highest peak in Wales, along with an excellent network of trails to guide your exploration.

Stroll through the Cardiff Central Market

Discover a range of local Welsh cuisine, vintage clothing and seasonal produce at Cardiff Central Market, a historic Victorian building that has been the site of a farmer’s market since the 18th century. You never know what treasures you’ll find as you wander the stores under the market’s glass roof.

Our top 5 things to do in Wales

When you’re not trekking through the mountains and exploring the most beautiful places in Wales, retreat to the city where you’ll find historic castles, old-fashioned markets and a compelling culture. Here are just a few of the ways we'll unlock the magic of Wales for you on your trip.

National Museum

Set in Cardiff’s civic center, the National Museum is home to a variety of national collections and touring exhibitions of geology and natural history. It also houses one of Europe’s best art collections, with paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics from Wales and the world, and one of the finest collections of Impressionist art.

St Fagans National Museum of History

Located on the grounds of St Fagans Castle in Cardiff, St Fagans National Museum of History is one of the world’s best open-air museums. Along with St Fagans Castle, a 16th-century manor house, you’ll find a collection of more than 50 original buildings from different historical periods that have been rebuilt on the 100-acre parkland.

Swansea Museum

Built in 1841, Swansea Museum is the oldest museum in Wales. It’s home to a fantastic collection of historical objects from the pasts of Swansea and the world. You’ll find six galleries with everything from a Welsh Kitchen to the tomb of an Egyptian mummy.

Best museums in Wales

Wales is home to some of Europe’s best historical and cultural collections and our Wales tours take it all in, from an open-air museum in a 16th-century castle, to an Egyptian mummy’s tomb.

Welsh rarebit

A traditional Welsh dish hailing from the 18th century, Welsh rarebit is a delicious take on the classic toasted cheese sandwich. It’s made from creamy sauce of Welsh cheese, ale or milk, and mustard or spices, poured hot over slices of toasted bread.

Glamorgan sausage

Named after the county of Glamorgan in Wales, Glamorgan sausage is a Welsh vegetarian sausage. Traditionally made with Caerphilly cheese, leek and coated in breadcrumbs, the sausages are fried until crispy. The dish became popular in the Second World War when meat was scarce, and is now a national specialty.

Also known as ‘speckled bread’, Bara Brith is a rich fruit cake, originally made as a yeasted bread. Spread with salted butter or drizzled with warm honey, this traditional Welsh dish is a tea-time favorite.

Best food in Wales

From cheesy toast and spiced fruit cake, to vegetarian sausages and hearty meats, we'll show you how Welsh cuisine turns simple ingredients into memorable meals.

What to pack for Wales

People packing for a tour

Waterproof coat

A waterproof coat is an essential item in Wales - there are showers all year round and Cardiff is one of the wettest cities in Europe.

Hiking boots

The mountains of Wales are best explored on foot, and you’ll need a comfortable pair of hiking boots to explore the trails. Make sure you break in your boots before your trip to Wales.

From the historic buildings like Cardiff Castle to the giant mountains of Snowdonia, you’ll want to capture every exquisite moment.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Wales is 230V and the sockets are of Type G, with standard British 3-pin plugs.

Sunglasses are great to have all year round, to protect from the sunny days in summer and the low angle of the sun in winter.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Llandudno Coach holidays

Tours to llandudno.

Llandudno is a coastal town located on the Creuddyn peninsula and is Wales’s largest seaside resort. It has 2 beaches – the award-winning North Shore and the less-noisy West Shore with its lovely sand dunes. Families have been coming to Llandudno for generations, and on the surface very little has changed in this lovely seaside town.

With its Victorian pier and traditional promenade, you could imagine yourself to be in a bygone era, but don’t be deceived – Llandudno has definitely not stood still! There’s always something to see and do. You could take a trip up to the top of Great Orme, either on foot or on the Tramway, speed around Llandudno Bay in a powerboat or try your hand at kitesurfing. Great fun!

More about coach trips to llandudno.

Llandudno is the perfect coach trip destination that offers a great time for all ages at any time of year. Situated on its own peninsula between the Great Orme and Little Orme Heads, the premier seaside resort of Llandudno boasts two wonderful beaches, as well as an award-winning pier, sweeping promenade and fun cable cars. While there are a lot of things to do in the town, there are even more things to do and attractions to see around Llandudno.

A little bit of history. Evidence of mining has been found here as far back as from the Bronze Age and during the Roman occupation. During the Victorian era, however, the mining trade in the Llandudno area died out, and like so many other towns Llandudno became a popular tourist destination, not only for the upper classes but also for those wishing to briefly escape their work lives. The seaside provided fresh clean air, which was a welcome refreshment from the hard work in mines and factories.

Attractions in Llandudno

Great orme country park.

This stunning country park really does have something to offer all ages. Whether your interests lie in history, bird watching or just walking and enjoying the spectacular views that this wonderful region has to offer. This beautiful place has been designated a special area of conservation, a site of special scientific interest and heritage coast. To reach the top of the headland you can either use a cable car, the tram or by scenic road for cars.

Llandudno Pier

The Pier is the premier attraction to visit whilst on holiday in Llandudno. It a great place to spend time with the family and kids, as it has lots of attractions to see and play. There are also lots of seating spaces with beautiful views at the Great Orme, the bay and the Little Orme. The pier at Llandudno is very well kept and has plenty of space suitable to walk for proms buggies and wheelchairs. Be aware of the seagulls that can easily steal your lunch!

Great Orme Cable Cars

Why not enjoy a ride on the Cable Car during your visit to this sensational resort. The cable cars travel silently from Happy Valley to the summit of the Great Orme over 200 meters up. So, if you’re not afraid of heights, experience these truly amazing views of Llandudno, the Little Orme, Conwy Estuary and endless Iris Sea. And when you finally reach the top you can also enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. But be aware that the cable cars might not be opened on very windy days.

Great Orme Mines

Don't miss visiting the Great Orme Mines, it is an extraordinary historical attraction with an amazing story. These copper mines were discovered in 1987 and represent one of the most astounding and important archaeological discoveries of recent time. And it is thought to be the largest Bronze Age mine, so far discovered in the World. Over 5 miles of explored tunnels, very narrow corridors with a low ceiling, underground galleries and a great experience overall if you are not claustrophobic of course.

Great Orme Tramway

Probably one of the main attractions in Llandudno is the great Orme Tram. Delighting visitors since it opened in 1902, the Great Orme Tramway allows visitors to enjoy a peaceful ride with spectacular views while going up the Great Orme.

Marine Drive

The Marine Drive is a marvellous four-mile scenic drive around the Orme headland with lovely views across Llandudno Bay, the Island of Anglesey and the Conwy Estuary. Driving around the Marine Drive is a memorable experience, however, if you are fit enough you can walk it as well.

Whenever you choose a coach holiday to Llandudno you are sure to see many sights and attractions around North West coast of Wales. If you cannot find a suitable coach holidays to Llandudno contact us and let our experienced travel agents help you find your perfect coach holiday to Llandudno or any other  destination in Wales

Taking a Wales road trip from the majestic peaks of Snowdonia National Park (known as Eryri in Welsh) to the windswept shores of the Pembrokeshire Coast is the best way to immerse yourself in this land where breath-taking landscapes and charming towns and cities are combined.

Take 5 to 7 days in Wales to fully immerse yourself in the warmth of Welsh hospitality, sample traditional cuisine, and embark on a journey that reveals the fascinating Celtic heritage of this often underrated gem.

Located on the windswept west coast of the United Kingdom, Wales is home to endless rugged landscapes, ancient history, and a vibrant cultural scene. This enchanting country is not to be overlooked, for it reveals a treasure trove of experiences. Perfect for those who seek to take the road less travelled.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Wales?

Wales is a country in itself but it is much smaller than the likes of Ireland or Scotland . This makes it the perfect location for a week-long getaway. Although you won’t be able to explore every corner with 5-7 days, that doesn’t mean you can’t easily experience the highlights.

With 5 days in Wales, you will be able to hit the two largest national parks, the rugged and mountainous Snowdonia and the glorious coastline of Pembrokeshire.

For the purpose of this itinerary, we begin in the north and come to a close in the south which makes this a circular road trip. This means you can experience the variation of this country in a short amount of time.

Depending on your priorities, you could easily swap out some of the more outdoorsy activities for days spent in Wales’ towns and cities. That’s the joy of exploring such a small country.

If you have 1 week in Wales, you will be able to visit all 3 national parks. Ramble along coastal footpaths, climb mountains and visit the country’s capital, Cardiff. Discover local cuisine such as Bara Brith (fruit loaf), Lava Bread (seaweed) and the incredibly moreish Welsh Cakes.

The Celtic past and delve into the myths and legends that surround Wales. One week is the perfect amount of time to spend in this varied country but if you do have more time on your hands, we have included some additional locations at the end of this itinerary that are worth adding to your route.

Getting To & Around Wales

Getting to Wales is relatively straightforward, thanks to its air, rail, road and sea connections. This itinerary is set up as a Wales road trip so, the best way to make the most out of your time here, is by car.

If you are visiting the UK and don’t have a car with you, there are several hire locations across the country where you can pick up, and drop off your hire car. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare options.

There are public transport options if you are unable to hire a car but across the more rural parts, the timetables can be sparse. Visiting Wales is doable when relying on public transport but you will have to allow extra time for connections and there may be certain areas you won’t be able to explore. You can view schedules here.

If you are travelling from further afield, there is one major airport in Cardiff which offers flights to a wide range of destinations across Europe and beyond. There are also direct ferries connecting Anglesey and Fishguard with Ireland .

Driving through Snowdonia NP

5-7 Day Wales Itinerary

Welcome to Wales, from the mountains in the north to the golden sandy beaches in the south, this road trip whisks you away on a journey of discovery. Take the slow road and explore the hidden gems throughout this Wales itinerary.

Day 1 – Anglesey

For the purpose of this itinerary, our road trip begins in the north and you can’t get any further north than the island of Anglesey. Known as the “Mother of Wales,” this island, attached to the mainland by the Menai Bridge, is a wild place full of ancient ruins, windswept landscapes, and picturesque villages.

Anglesey makes the perfect day trip, although you could easily take longer to explore the coast. Start your day by driving over the Menai Bridge, an iconic suspension bridge connecting Anglesey to mainland Wales.

If you have been stuck in the car for a few hours, you will find the National Trust property Plas Newydd on the other side of the bridge. It’s the perfect place to stretch your legs, with beautiful views across the Menai Strait, especially if you have a four-legged companion.

There are a few options for spending the day on Anglesey, depending on what you want to see and do with your time.

For those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and embrace the serenity, head down to Newborough Forest. Take a peaceful stroll amidst the towering pine trees before reaching the stunning Llanddwyn Island. Explore its historic lighthouse, ruins, and peaceful beaches.

To get the best of both worlds, head to South Stack Cliffs RSPB Reserve, where the South Stack Lighthouse stands proudly against the dramatic coastal backdrop.

Take a stroll along the cliffs for breathtaking views out to sea. Then, in the afternoon, you will have time to explore Holyhead, the largest town on Anglesey. Visit St. Cybi’s Church and unwind beside the Holyhead Harbour.

For the evening, return to the mainland, maybe making a pit stop a the incredible Conwy Castle or Caernarfon Castle on the north coast. For the first two nights of this itinerary, we will be based in or around Snowdonia National Park .

Menai Suspension Bridge

Where to Stay Near Snowdonia National Park

Hafan Artro – This small hotel in the village of Llanbedr is a great base for exploring North Wales. They have free on-site parking, a full breakfast and a range of comfortable rooms available.

The Tilman – Those after luxury will love this 5-star hotel during their time in North Wales. They have several luxe rooms to choose from, a fab breakfast available and amenities including an on-site bar to enjoy.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Snowdonia hotels!

Day 2 – Snowdon (Eryri)

After a peaceful day enjoying the sea breeze over on the island of Anglesey, it’s time to lace up those hiking boots to head up to the tallest mountain in Wales, Snowdon (Eryri in Welsh).

For those who love walking and want to complete the challenge of the ascent, the hike up to the summit is beautiful and accessible for most fitness levels/ages during the summer months.

For those who would rather reserve their energy, there is a train that chugs up the steep mountainside to reach the top from Llanberis. No effort required.

If you are hiking, it’s best to set out early. During the peak season, the path can become crowded, especially later in the day. There are 6 pedestrian routes to the summit but the two that start and finish on the Pen Y Pass road are the best.

You can also create a circuit with these two routes which gives a little more diversity than the other paths. You can park your car in the Pan y Pass car park but you will need to book ahead for a spot during the summer.

Head out on the ‘Pyg’ trail and return on the ‘Miners’ – this way, you could pack your swimwear and take a dip in the Llyn Llydaw, a chilly mountain lake, to cool off on the return. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, pack a coat and take plenty of snacks and water.

The weather can change very quickly in the mountains so it’s always best to be prepared, even if it’s a beautiful sunny day in the car park.

You will most likely spend the entire day in the mountains, the hike takes between 6-8 hours. If you are an inexperienced hiker and prefer to go with a guide you can  join a hiking tour  or  organise a private hike.

As you return to your car, it’s likely you will need to have a good meal to replenish your energy. There are plenty of cosy pubs offering meals beside the fire around the area, including ‘The Heights’ in Llanberis.

There is also a pizza restaurant serving the best wood-fired pizzas in North Wales called ‘ Hangin Pizzeria ’ in Betws-y-Coed a short drive away which is definitely worth the trip.

View from Mount Snowdon

Day 3 – Portmeirion/Mid Wales

After spending 2 nights in North Wales, day 3 is a road trip day. We have added a few options for pit stops along the way so depending on how much time you have, you could visit one or all three.

The drive itself takes between 3-4 hours depending on where exactly your accommodation is. There is one main road down the west coast of Wales and you’re in luck, it’s an incredibly scenic drive through mountains and along the coast road.

Our first stop is a slight detour from the main road but is well worth visiting, especially during the summer months when the sun is shining.

Portmeirion – Is this really Wales? You’d be forgiven for confusing the village of Portmeirion with a quaint village in Italy. It defies convention with an enchanting blend of Italianate architecture and lush landscapes.

Conceived by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, this colourful haven transports visitors to a Mediterranean-inspired realm, adorned with pastel buildings, cobbled streets, and exotic gardens.

Stop number two is the charming coastal town of Aberystwyth. Mid Wales is often overlooked but it is a real hidden gem, with the Cambrian mountains on one side, and Cardigan Bay on the other.

Home to Aberystwyth University, this town exudes a youthful energy, with vibrant cafes, shops, and cultural spaces. You will find the mediaeval castle ruins on one side of the promenade and the funicular railway up Constitution Hill on the other.

Aberystwyth offers endless options for exploration, from spending time on the beach, treating yourself to some authentic Welsh cuisine, hiking in the hills, to rummaging through the independent shops along the high street. If you only have time to stop once on your journey south, Aberystwyth is the place to visit.

The final stop is the quaint coastal market town of Fishguard. This maritime town is the gateway to Pembrokeshire but also serves as a ferry port to the Republic of Ireland.

The town is famed for the Last Invasion of Britain in 1797, an event commemorated by the impressive tapestry found in the Town Hall. Take a stroll to enjoy breathtaking views from the cliff tops overlooking Fishguard Bay before exploring the winding streets lined with Georgian and Victorian architecture, uncovering local shops and cafes along the way.

For the next 3 nights on this Wales itinerary, we will be based around Pembrokeshire National Park. In terms of accommodation, selecting a central location is a strategic move and will help cut down on driving hours.

Village of Portmeirion

Where to Stay in Pembrokeshire

Coach Guest House – This guesthouse in Tenby is a great base in Pembrokeshire. They have plenty of comfortable rooms to choose from and a wonderful breakfast each morning.

The Park Hotel – Situated in South Wales just outside of Tenby, this hotel is a great, peaceful getaway in the region. They have beautiful rooms (some with sea views) and a swimming pool on site.

Beachcomber B&B – This beachfront bed and breakfast is another excellent base for exploring Pembrokeshire. They have several delightful rooms to choose from along with an exceptional breakfast available.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Pembrokeshire hotels!

Day 4 – Pembrokeshire – North

We kick off day 4 in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Home to meandering cliff paths, turquoise waters and long stretches of sandy beaches, this is Wales’ answer to the Riviera.

For the purpose of this itinerary, we have split this vast area into two days. It may look like a small national park but with most of the roads being windy country lanes, it can take time to get from one location to the next.

The unofficial capital of this National Park is St Davids, Britain’s smallest city. Despite its city status, St Davids exudes a charming village atmosphere, characterised by its stunning cathedral, historic sites, local boutiques and a backdrop of rolling hills and pristine beaches.

Any day trip to this micro-city should start at the magnificent St David’s Cathedral. Dating back to the 12th century, this beautiful building stands as a testament to the city’s religious significance, drawing pilgrims from around the world.

St Davids also serves as a gateway to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a renowned long-distance trail hugging the rugged Welsh coastline. The nearby St Davids Peninsula, with its secluded coves and panoramic vistas and is within walking distance from the city centre,  giving you ample opportunity to explore its natural wonders.

The centre of the city can become very crowded during the peak summer months and, due its size, parking can be tricky. It’s best to arrive early to make sure you bag a spot and can explore for the rest of the day without worrying.

Pembrokeshire is a coastal paradise, so it’s only right that our next destination is a beautiful sandy beach. Framed by towering cliffs and rolling sand dunes, Marloes Sands is one of the more ‘off the beaten track’ beaches in this National Park and even during the busiest seasons, there is plenty of space to spread out and find your own slice of tranquillity.

The expansive sands reveal intricate rock formations, tidal pools, and the iconic “Church Rock,” a limestone stack rising dramatically from the sea.

The beach is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, as seabirds soar overhead and seals often bask on the offshore rocks. Make sure you take note of the tide times before visiting, at high tide there is little to no sand visible.

Hiking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

Day 5 – Pembrokeshire – South

Day 5 begins in the unassuming village of Bosherston. As with most of the destinations in Pembrokeshire, it’s best to arrive early to make sure you get a parking spot.

Bosherston is a very small village, with just a campsite, a handful of houses, a pub and a cafe. The reason this quaint village is so popular is what is hidden beneath the trees beyond the car park, the Lily Pools.

These beautiful lakes are full of lily pads and if you visit in July/August, the flowers will be in full bloom. There is a circular path around the lakes but if you take a short diversion, you will emerge from the treeline onto the coast at Broad Haven South Beach.

This hidden bay is complete with golden sands, surrounding countryside and breathtaking rock formations.

After spending the morning soaking in the best of Wales’ coastline, it’s time to head into the seaside town of Tenby. Although Tenby is a town, it is much larger than St Davids and there are plenty of ways to spend your afternoon.

The town’s three golden-sand beaches invite sun-seekers from around the world, while the mediaeval town walls surround the quirky, vibrant atmosphere of the town’s shops, galleries, and cafes. Explore the bustling harbour, where fishing boats bob on the tide, or take a short boat trip to Caldey Island, home to a tranquil abbey and lighthouse.

If you only have 5 days for your trip to Wales, Tenby is the perfect place to round off your trip. From here, you will be able to reach the M4 in just one hour or, if you are using public transport, there is a train station just outside of the walled town centre.

Make sure you grab a bite to eat before you leave, Tenby is home to some excellent up-and-coming restaurants and street food stalls such as Tap & Tan, Ultracomida and Lokky’s.

The charming seaside village of Tenby

Day 6 – Brecon Beacons

If you have dedicated a whole week to exploring Wales then you’re in luck, our next destination is the rugged Brecon Beacons National Park.

A true hiker’s paradise, the Beacons are much smaller than the mountains of Snowdonia but they can be equally as beautiful and are much more accessible for every level of adventurer. Encompassing lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls, and ancient woodlands, this national park has it all.

If you loved climbing to the summit of Snowdon, it’s only right that you also bag Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. Towering over the rolling hills that surround it, Pen Y Fan stands at 886m.

The climb is moderate and is accessible to most, with an easy-to-follow, non-technical path. The journey begins from the popular trailhead at Pont ar Daf, winding through heather-clad slopes and rocky terrain. As you ascend, the panoramic views are revealed, step by step.

Climbing Pen Y Fan is a popular choice for a day trip in the Brecon Beacons, but for a unique adventure that is a little further from the beaten path, you’ll want to head over to the other side of the National Park to discover the magical trails of Waterfall Country.

Here, a meandering path leads you deep into the ancient forest, venturing along the trails of the Mellte and Hepste Rivers. The highlight is the Four Falls Trail, a mesmerising circular route leading to four breathtaking waterfalls – Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr, and the awe-inspiring Sgwd yr Eira.

Each waterfall has its own unique charm but at Sgwd Y Eira, you can actually walk behind the curtain of water to the otherside. This is also a popular place to go wild swimming in the fresh Welsh mountain river.

Last on our list of things to do in the Brecon Beacons is the Llyn Y Fan Fach circular hike. This horseshoe walk is much quieter than the Pen Y Fan horseshoe but the incredible views and dramatic geology make it a real hidden gem.

Ascent behind the lake to walk along the ridgeline then loop back around, passing another hidden lake. The real highlight is this legendary hidden valley, where the Lady of the Lake is said to have risen from the waters.

This mythological past, coupled with the tranquil beauty of the lake and mountain views, makes the Llyn y Fan Fach walk a must-do for any adventurer visiting the Brecon Beacons. Plan to spend the night in Cardiff.

Hiking Pen Y Fan

Day 7 – Cardiff

Seeing as we are rounding off our trip to Wales in the south, it would be a shame to miss out the country’s capital, Cardiff. This city blends its rich history with a modern day vibrancy, there is plenty to see and do whether you want to discover the castle, spend the day shopping or immerse yourself in Wales’ favourite sport, rugby.

The city’s iconic skyline is dominated by Cardiff Castle, a mediaeval ruin nestled in the heart of the bustling metropolis.

Take a stroll through Bute Park, a natural oasis perched along the River Taff, before immersing yourself in the cultural delights of the National Museum.

It’s also worth making a short detour to visit the recently modernised waterfront of Cardiff Bay which houses the Wales Millennium Centre and a plethora of shops and restaurants.

If you are a night owl, you will find plenty to do in the city centre as the darkness draws in. From mysterious cocktail bars to thumping nightclubs, this is a university city which really comes alive after dark.

Cardiff Castle

Have More Time?

If you have more than one week to spend exploring Wales, there are a few additional stops along the way that are worth adding to your itinerary. The first being the coastline just beyond the city of Swansea, known as The Gower Peninsula.

Designated as the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Gower is home to iconic spots like Rhossili Bay, with its sweeping sands and the famous rocky outcrop of Worm’s Head. The peninsula is dotted with mediaeval castles, such as Pennard Castle, overlooking Three Cliffs Bay.

A true haven for water enthusiasts, the Gower offers world-class surfing at Llangennith, and opportunities to discover secluded coves by paddleboarding and kayaking.

Wye Valley / Offa’s Dyke

On the border between Wales and England, you will find Offa’s Dyke, an ancient earthwork tracing this historic frontier built by King Offa in the 8th century. Spanning 177 miles, it weaves across diverse landscapes, from rolling hills to woodlands.

Today, the dyke serves as a long-distance trail for hikers and nature enthusiasts, revealing remnants of history along the way, including ancient forts and Roman ruins.

You can explore this trail the entire way down the spine of Wales but the section that runs through the Wye Valley is the most breathtaking and is well worth taking a day to explore. Carved by nature, this UNESCO-listed Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty follows the river Wye, bordered by ancient woodlands and towering limestone cliffs.

Climb up to Symonds Yat Rock, a scenic viewpoint above the village, offering breathtaking vistas of the river winding through the valley. Don’t forget to visit Tintern Abbey, a Gothic masterpiece, founded in 1131. Its soaring arches and weathered stone walls stand as a thought-provoking testament to centuries past.

Llyn Peninsula

Another destination that is a little further from the beaten path is the rugged Llyn Peninsula. Often forgotten in favour of Snowdonia and Anglesey, this coastal haven juts out of north Wales into the wild Irish Sea.

Renowned for its rugged landscapes and picturesque villages, the peninsula boasts enchanting beaches like Porth Neigwl and Porth Oer. Aberdaron, a charming coastal village, marks the far western tip, with its quaint charm and the historic St Hywyn’s Church.

The Llyn Coastal Path meanders along the shoreline, offering panoramic views of Cardigan Bay and Snowdonia.  If you want a peaceful holiday away from the crowds, even in the high season, the Llyn Peninsula is the perfect destination.

Llyn Peninsula

Wales may be a small country but with hidden valleys, towering mountains, golden sands and mystical waterfalls, it really does have everything. With ample opportunities to discover hidden gems, Wales is one of those destinations that will always leave you wanting more.

Wales boss Warren Gatland set to finalise tour squad after injury-hit build-up

W ales’ dwindling front-row resources will come under the microscope as head coach Warren Gatland finalises his tour squad for Australia.

Hookers Elliot Dee, Sam Parry and Ryan Elias are already out of the two-Test trip, while injury question marks hang over tighthead props Henry Thomas and Keiron Assiratti, with Dillon Lewis also thought to be struggling.

Gatland is due to name a likely 34-strong squad on Monday, when 21-year-old uncapped Cardiff forward Efan Daniel looks set to secure a tour spot alongside fellow hookers Dewi Lake and Evan Lloyd.

Assiratti went off during Wales’ 41-13 defeat against world champions South Africa at Twickenham, having replaced Thomas, who has a foot problem, in the starting line-up.

Uncapped Ospreys prop Ben Warren is understood to be in the frame for a call-up should Gatland’s hand be forced on injuries.

“I spoke to Prav (Wales’ national medical manager Prav Mathema), and he is just going to reassess that and see where all those players are,” Gatland said.

“There are a couple of players with back issues and Henry with a foot issue.

“We just need to make sure that assessment gets done so we can have a clear picture of where we think some of them are.”

Elias, wing Josh Adams and lock Will Rowlands have all been rested for the tour, which features Tests against Australia on July 6 and 13, with wing Keelan Giles and flanker Jac Morgan having been sidelined due to injuries.

But Gatland will be bolstered by England-based players such as Nick Tompkins, Dafydd Jenkins, Christ Tshiunza and Tommy Reffell, who were all unavailable to face South Africa as the game fell outside World Rugby’s summer Test window.

Gatland, meanwhile, has given his response to Parry quitting the training squad during the build-up to Wales facing South Africa.

Parry reportedly believed he was “disrespected” by the Wales boss amid a claim it had been suggested to him he was only helping to prepare other squad hookers ahead of the Australia tour.

“I was straight up with him and told him what the situation he was in in the squad,” Gatland added.

“I said that he was initially covering for Elliot (Dee) with the injury. So, I was clear in that.

“I said, ‘Look, I don’t want to stuff you around, you’ve been brilliant for us when you’ve come in with us in the past and we’ll just see what happens with that’.

There was definitely nothing from me in terms of trying to disrespect him. I just wanted to be honest and upfront with him

“So, I am not sure how I disrespected him there. There was definitely nothing from me in terms of trying to disrespect him. I just wanted to be honest and up front with him.”

Elsewhere in the squad, there could be a place for former rugby league star Regan Grace, despite him having played only two senior games of union.

Grace was called into training following Giles’ injury, and the Bath player immediately impressed, with Wales assistant coach Jonathan Humphreys describing him as an “X-factor” player.

Grace scored 89 tries for St Helens during a league career that saw him play in three Grand Final-winning teams.

He ruptured his Achilles tendon in August 2022 ahead of joining French Top 14 club Racing 92, but he did not feature for them after suffering an injury relapse six months later.

The 27-year-old linked up with Bath to continue his rehabilitation, and he played in friendlies earlier this year against Leinster and Gloucester as he returned to full fitness.

You Have to See This Taylor Swift-Themed Weather Report Ahead of Wales Eras Tour Stop

Taylor Swift performs on stage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Principality Stadium on June 18, 2024 in Cardiff, Wales.

Thanks to one fearless weather reporter, Welsh Swifties got the best possible forecast ahead of Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour concert in Cardiff.

BBC Wales’ Sabrina Lee captivated fans Monday (June 17) — one day ahead of the pop star’s concert at Principality Stadium — when she sprinkled dozens of Swift song titles into her broadcast. “For the Taylor Swift concert, will the forecast be a ‘Love Story,’ or will the ‘Cruel Summer’ continue?” she began, dressed in a sparkly dress and pink eye shadow à la the singer’s Lover era.

The Secret of Gracie Abrams & Taylor Swift: How Their Partnership Is Lighting a Fire Under the…

“Last week in the arctic air mass, it felt like we’d gone ‘Back to December,'” Lee continued. “‘Don’t Blame Me!’ But since then, ‘Everything Has Changed.’ ‘Blank Space’ on the map does ‘Mean’ some ‘Gorgeous’ sunshine. High cloud giving some ‘Lavender Haze.'”

Trending on Billboard

“After the concert of your ‘Wildest Dreams,’ no ‘Midnight Rain’ — just a ‘Delicate’ breeze,” Lee concluded. “If you’re thinking about ‘Style,’ ‘The 1’ thing you need to remember is a ‘Cardigan’ as it cools down.”

At press time, Swift is already onstage performing her one and only Eras show in Wales — no doubt joined by thousands of fans who are well-prepared for the weather there, thanks to Lee. In a few days, the 14-time Grammy winner will spend three nights at London’s Wembley Stadium before traveling through Dublin and Amsterdam.

She previously set up shop in Liverpool, where she rang in the centennial show of her global trek. “We played our 100th show on The Eras Tour (which feels truly deranged to say because this show feels new to me every time we play it),” Swift wrote on Instagram afterward. “It’s been the adventure of a lifetime because of you.”

Prince William Takes Kids to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Concert for His Birthday

Prince william celebrated his 42nd birthday at taylor swift's eras tour performance at wembley stadium june 21 alongside children prince george, 10, princess charlotte, 9, and prince louis, 6..

Prince William  is celebrating like it's his birthday, every day.

The Prince of Wales marked his 42nd birthday with a very special outing as he took his children  Prince George , 10,  Princess Charlotte , 9, and  Prince Louis , 6, to see Taylor Swift   perform at London's Wembley Stadium June 21, royal reporter  Roya Nikkhah  confirmed on  X .

William's wife  Kate Middleton  did not appear to be at the show alongside her family, although  she did have a sweet birthday message  for her husband of 13 years earlier in the day.

"Happy birthday Papa," she posted on Instagram, alongside a photo of William and his children jumping on the beach, "we all love you so much! Cx."

And while Kate has largely stayed out of the public eye since  sharing her cancer diagnosis in March , the 42-year-old did join the royal family for  her first public appearance at the Trooping of the Colours  ceremony on June 15. The Princess of Wales—donning a black-and-white Jenny Packham dress and Philip Treacy hat—appeared with her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony as they watched the Royal Air Force fly past.

As for William, this is far from the first time he and Taylor have crossed paths. In fact, Miss Americana and the real-life prince previously took the stage together alongside  Jon Bon Jovi  for a performance of "Livin' on a Prayer" at a charity event in 2013.  And as Taylor explained the following year , it was truly a wild moment.

"Yeah, it was insane," she said, "and I was very nervous for the whole thing because it was at Kensington Palace and it was my first royal encounter of sorts."

According to the 34-year-old, before Jon started to sing, he pointed to William, "and said something like, 'I hear you like to do this at karaoke night, karaoke boy.'"

"He starts the song and Prince William looks over at me and says, 'I don't remember it now. It's all gone now. I don't remember the song now.' Kinda freaking out a little bit," she continued. "He just looks at me and is like, 'You gotta go with me' and I was like, 'OK,' and we got up there and started singing 'Livin' on a Prayer.' Like, I died."

Unfortunately William did not appear to take the stage at Wembley Stadium during the Eras Tour, but the royals were in good company, as Taylor's boyfriend  Travis Kelce  was  also spotted in the audience , alongside his brother  Jason Kelce  and his wife  Kylie Kelce .

She added, "My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home."

"My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment."

Kate Middleton Apologizes for Edited Family Photo Controversy

After photo agencies pulled the picture Kensington Palace shared of Kate since having her abdominal surgery on March 10, the Princess of Wales addressed claims the photo was doctored.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual. The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. "Based on the current medical advice," the Palace said, "she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter."

Prince William Adjusting His Schedule

Amid Kate's recovery, Prince William postponed a number of engagements as he supported his family, including the couple's three children, Prince George , Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis .
