From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

Barcelona’s cruise port is conveniently located near the city centre, at one end of the famous Las Ramblas Boulevard.

Although there are various public transportation options to reach the city centre from the airport , none of them provides direct access to the cruise ship terminals. As a result, most people either opt for a taxi or reserve a transfer service offered by their travel agent or the cruise line.

However, alternative methods are available, and it’s important to compare the various options before deciding. In this article, we look at how to get from Barcelona Airport to the cruise ship terminals via taxi, shuttle bus, regular bus, train, metro, and private transfer.

In a hurry?

A taxi from Barcelona Airport to the cruise port costs €45 and takes approximately thirty minutes. Alternatively, local bus company Moventis operates a shuttle service which runs directly from the airport to the cruise ship terminals.

Barcelona Cruise Ship Terminals

Cruise ships dock at seven terminals in Barcelona harbour. Larger ships dock at four terminals on the Moll Adossat wharf. Smaller ships dock at the three World Trade Center terminals on the Moll de Barcelona wharf.

The World Trade Centre terminals are within walking distance of Las Ramblas and the nearby Drassanes metro station (see map below).

The Moll Adossat terminals are approximately three kilometres from Las Ramblas, and there is a shuttle bus that departs from the World Trade Center terminals, which is near the Columbus Monument .

Before deciding which mode of transport to use, you should check which terminal your cruise ship will be docking at here . This information should have been provided by your travel agent when you booked your cruise.

By Taxi from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

The fastest and most convenient way to get from the airport to your cruise ship is by taxi.

The taxi fare from Barcelona airport to the cruise ship terminals is €45, which includes up to 4 people and four pieces of luggage.

Depending on traffic and which terminal your ship is docked at, the journey should take about 30 minutes.

To the taxi rank at BCN Terminal 1

As you leave the luggage claim area and go through the sliding doors, you will come to a metal barrier where people await arrivals. Beyond this barrier, there are two covered ramps leading down to the taxi ranks, wither side of the Go Natural snack bar.

If you have booked a taxi in advance , you should take the ramp to the right of the snack bar , which leads down to the taxi stand where your cab will be waiting for you.

If you haven’t pre-booked a taxi, you should head for the ramp to the left of the snack bar . At the bottom of this ramp, there are white arrows leading to a second taxi stand where taxi-wardens in high vis jackets will guide you to the next available taxi.

By Shuttle Bus from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals

Local bus company Moventis operates a shared shuttle service which runs directly from Barcelona Airport to the cruise ship terminals and costs approximately the same as going by public transport.

Unlike regular bus and coach services, which run to a fixed timetable, Moventis schedules transfers according to their customers’ arrival times. To ensure minimal delays, they adapt the type of vehicle used based on demand. At peak times, they use luxury coaches, and during less busy periods, they use air-conditioned minibuses.

When you book your transfer, you indicate your flight time and which ship you will be leaving on. Upon arrival at Barcelona Airport, you are met by a Moventis staff member or agent who takes you to your vehicle.

There are meeting points at both airport terminals. If your flight lands at terminal one, the Moventis agent will be waiting for you near the barriers as you leave the baggage claim area. You can’t miss them; just look out for someone in a bright orange uniform.

In terminal two, you need to go to the From2 desk, near the escalators leading to the train station, in section 2B. As you leave the baggage claim area, turn left and follow the signs to the train station as described in this post. The From2 desk is behind the escalator on the ground floor.

From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Ship Terminals by Public Transport

There are several ways to get from Barcelona airport to the cruise ship terminals by public transport. As mentioned above, none of them is direct, and all involve some amount of walking.

By Train from the Airport

The cheapest way to get to the cruise ship terminal from the airport is to take the R2 Nord train from the train station at BCN terminal T2 to Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia train station. Trains depart every 30 minutes and take approximately 25 minutes to get to Passeig de Gràcia. Check train timetables here .

From here, you catch the metro L3 (green line) three stops to Drassanes (direction Zona Universitària).

It takes approximately ten minutes to walk from the Drassanes metro stop to the World Trade Center terminals on Barcelona Wharf.

If your ship docks at one of the terminals on the Moll Adossat pier, then you will need to take the Cruise Bus (more information below) from near the World Trade Center terminals to your ship.

The total cost per person of this journey is €4.60 (train fare) + €2.55 (metro fare) + €3 (Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat if needed)

If there are two or more of you travelling together, you can save money by purchasing a T-familiar travel card, which costs €10.70 for eight combined journeys and covers both the train and the metro.

T-familiar tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at the airport train station.

You can also save money by purchasing return tickets for the cruise bus.

More information about public transport tickets and travel passes here >>

If your flight lands at BCN Terminal 1, there is a free shuttle bus that will take you to Terminal 2. Buses depart every 5 minutes and take approximately 10 minutes.

By Bus from the Airport

The Aerobus is a fast bus service from Barcelona airport to the city centre. The first stop on the route is Plaça d’Espanya , where you can catch the L3 metro four stops to Drassanes (direction Trinitat Nova).

From here, it takes approximately twenty-five minutes to walk to the World Trade Center, from where you can catch the Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat Wharf.

The Aerobús fare is currently €6.75, and buses depart from Terminal 1 every five minutes throughout most of the day and every ten minutes from Terminal 2.

This not only saves having to take the shuttle bus between airport terminals but also saves you from having to wait up to 30 minutes for the next train.

The total cost per person for the journey is €6.75 (Aerobus fare) + €2.55 (metro fare) + €3 (Cruise Bus to Moll Adossat wharf).

Tickets for the Aerobus can be purchased at ticket machines near the bus stop or online in advance .

The Cruise Bus

a blue cruise ship shuttle bus parked at a bus stop next to Barcelona harbour

The Cruise Bus (also known as the T3 or Portbus) is a shuttle service that follows a circular route connecting the cruise ship terminals.

The bus stops at Barcelona Wharf (the World Trade Center terminals), Moll Adossat Terminal A, terminal B, Terminal C and Terminal D. The fare is €3 one way or €4.50 return.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus, cash only, correct change or small denomination notes or online at the Cruise Bus website .

The buses don’t follow a set timetable. Departures are coordinated with the arrival and departure of the cruise ships. At peak times, when passengers disembark and board the ships, buses depart every few minutes. During the rest of the day, there are buses approximately every 20 minutes.

All buses are wheelchair accessible and have space to stow large suitcases.

The Cruise Bus is NOT covered by TMB tickets or travel cards such as the T-casual or the Hola Barcelona Travel Card .

From the Drassanes metro stop to the Cruise Bus Stop & the World Trade Center Terminal

It takes approximately seven minutes to walk from the Drassanes metro stop to the World Trade Center terminal and the Cruise Bus stop.

When exiting the metro, follow the signs on the platform to the Sortida Portal de Sta Madrona exit. After you go through the ticket barriers, you will see a sign pointing to the right with a pictogram of a cruise ship. In my opinion, especially if you’re travelling with heavy luggage, it’s better to turn left towards the Av de les Drassanes exit, where there is a lift up to street level.

The lift brings you up in front of the Torre Colon Tower (one of the ugliest skyscrapers in Barcelona ).

With your back to the tower, you will see the Barcelona Maritime Museum to your right and La Rambla to your left.

Walk towards the Maritime Museum and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Turn left and walk alongside the museum towards Passeig de Josep Carner . You will now see the Christopher Columbus Monument up ahead.

Keeping the Columbus Monument to your left, cross Passeig de Josep Carner at the pedestrian crossing, then turn right along Passeig de Josep Carner in front of the old Customs Building towards the Plaça de Les Drassanes roundabout.

Once you pass the customs building, you will see the Onades monument and, further ahead, the Torre Sant Jaume I cable car tower and the World Trade Center.

Cross the pedestrian crossing and walk straight ahead past the F1 ferry terminal and along the Moll de Barcelona wharf to the World Trade Center cruise terminals.

The Cruse Bus stop is located near the entrance to the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel .

ATMs and Changing Money at Barcelona Airport

As we’ve seen above, If you haven’t purchased tickets in advance, you’ll need correct change or small denomination bills to purchase your ticket for the T3 Cruise Bus.

Exchange rates at airport money changers are notoriously bad, so it’s best to use your bank debit card and take money out from the ATMs at the airport.

There are ATMs (cash machines) at both terminals. There’s no need to worry if you don’t speak Spanish; once you have inserted your card, you will get the option to select your preferred language.

At terminal one, there are two ATMs next to the ramp down to the taxi rank.

At terminal 2, they are located in the vestibule after you come out of the luggage claim area, approximately halfway between the left luggage lockers and Botero’s horse statue .

Cash machines usually issue a combination of €50 and €20 bills. If you are using the airport train, you can get change from the ticket machines when you purchase your ticket (the ticket machines also accept credit cards).

There are also cafes at both terminals that will be able to change a €50 bill for the price of a cup of coffee or a snack.

From Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Private Transfer

If you prefer to have someone waiting for you when your flight arrives, then you could book a private transfer .

A private transfer is more expensive than catching a cab from the taxi rank but with the advantage that you can pay upfront by PayPal or credit card.

Additional services such as bag drops or booster seats for children and vehicles adapted to carry electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters are also available.

There are also left luggage storage facilities near Plaça de Catalunya,   Plaça d’Espanya and at Barcelona Sants train station.

Hotels at Barcelona Cruise Port

The only hotel at the Barcelona Cruise ship port is the Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel which is a very good 5-star hotel.

Hotels located on Las Ramblas or Av. Paral.lel are a short taxi ride from the cruise port. For more information about where to stay in Barcelona, check out my Barcelona neighbourhood guide .

Our flight is to land at 9:30 am. assuming it takes an hour to gather luggage and 30 minutes to get to the port, making it around 11:00, is there something to do until our boarding time of 12:00? we are booked on the Royal Carribean cruise. Also, we have paid for transfer from airport to port via Royal Carribean, is that considered the Cruise Bus you mentioned?

If your transfer is organized by Royal Carribean, then I would assume that they will have laid on a bus directly from the airport to your cruise ship, so no, you won’t be taking the cruise bus mentioned in the article above.

I recommend that you contact your travel agent or the cruise line to find out about timings, but would assume that you will be able to board the ship upon arrival at the cruise terminal and that any “free time” will be time at the airport waiting for the Royal Carribean transfer service.

Assuming that you will be arriving at Terminal 1, there is a snack bar called Go Natural just after you leave baggage claim where you could rest and have a coffee while you are waiting for the Royal Carribean representative. I believe that most cruise ship companies ask you to meet their reps at a meeting point which is close to the Go Natural snack bar but recommend that you ask your travel agent or Royal Carribean to confirm this.

we are joining the royal caribbean ship on 24/09/2023 returning 01/10/23 can you advise us whether it is best to take train or cruiseshuttle bus( we are not booked on for transfers) or private hire. tia

Looking at the cruise ship timetables for September, it looks like you’ll be on the Symphony of the Seas which docks at the Moll Adossat wharf, right?

In which case, if you want to use public transport, you’ve basically got two options:

From the airport terminal 1: Take the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya where you transfer to the metro L3 which you take to Drassanes from where you walk to the World Trade Center and catch the Cruise Bus to your ship.

From the airport terminal 2: Take the train to Passeig de Gràcia where you transfer to the metro L3 which you take to Drassanes from where you walk to the World Trade Center and catch the Cruise Bus to your ship.

Note, it’s not either the train or the cruise bus as you mentioned, it’s train + metro + cruise bus!

I’ve recently discovered that the company who run the Cruise Bus now operate a shared transfer service which runs directly from the airport to the cruise ship terminals and costs about the same as taking public transport.

I plan to update the article in the next few days with the full details, in the meantime there’s more information in this link .

We are flying in to Barcelona and going on a cruise “Royal Caribbean” this summer and need a good hotel for a great price for one night. Also one that is somewhat close to the port terminals. What is the best way to get from airport to hotel and then the next morning to the cruise?

Hi LDenton,

I recommend you check out Hotel Jazz which is a good-value 3 star hotel close to Plaça de Catalunya.

The location is ideal, because it’s central and well communicated with both the airport and the Cruise terminals. I’ve listed some alternatives in the same area in this post .

The best way, to get from the airport to the Hotel would be by taxi. A taxi from the airport to the hotel will cost about €30 and from the hotel to the cruise terminal will cost between €10 and €15 depending on which cruise terminal your ship departs from.

If you want to save some money, you could catch the Aerobús from the airport to Plaça de Cataluny which is the last stop, and only a few minutes walk from your hotel and doesn’t take much longer than a taxi. There’s more information about the Aerobús in this post .

Hi, Thank you so much for this! I am travelling with my sister in law and mother, and we are only carrying backpacks. Our destination is Airport to Palacruceros, Terminal D & Terminal E Muelle Adosado, Port of Barcelona. We have a lot of time as we will arrive hours early so we’re looking for the cheapest option to arrive at the port, maybe even stop after the train ride and visit the area before taking the bus, as I believe that was the cheapest option. My question is, after the train and the bus (buying that 8 journey ticket for all 3 of us I believe you said would be cheaper), can we walk to the terminal? Is it a long walk? Google maps is showing me a lot of back and forth and saying it’s a 54 minute walk. Thank you!

I think you mean train and metro right?

From the Drassanes metro stop to Terminal E is about four kilometres, so fifty minutes would be about right. It’s not an unpleasant walk, and there is pavement all the way, but unless you’re particularly interested in large commercial harbours, it’s not particularly interesting either. I walked it a couple of years ago while researching this article, and I think it took me about forty-five minutes, but I wasn’t carrying any luggage.

If you’ve got plenty of time on your hands, you could send your luggage ahead with a bag drop service from the airport (link in the article above), then catch the train to Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia station, which is right next to Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, and not far from La Sagrada Familia.

Depending on how much time you actually have, you could visit one or more of them before catching a taxi to the cruise terminal, which would cost about fifteen Euros.

Does being on a cruise ship for 8 days in the Mediterranean count as 8 days in the schengen

Hi Mrs P Baker,

My understanding is that, if all the ports that the ship docks at during the cruise are within the Schengen Area, then you will be deemed to be in the Schengen Area for all eight days.

Having said that, I’m not an expert on immigration and visa-related topics so I recommend you check with your travel agent to make sure

How can be go from city center to the cruise terminal in economical way?

It will vary depending on where you are staying in the city centre, and which terminal your cruise ship departs from.

For example, from Plaça de Catalunya (generally considered to be the centre of Barcelona) to Moll Adossat you can take the metro (line 3) to Drassanes followed by the cruise bus from near the Columbus Monument to the terminal (more information about these locations in the article above).

This will cost €2.40 for the metro plus €3.00 for the Cruise Bus. Generally speaking, wherever you are staying within Barcelona, the cost of travelling to the cruise ship terminal will be the same. If you already have a travel pass such as the Barcelona Card or the Hola Barcelona, then you could use this for travelling on the metro but not on the Cruise Bus.

A taxi for the same journey will cost approximately €15.00.

If you tell me where you are staying and which terminal your cruise ship will be moored at I’ll be able to give you more detailed and accurate advice.

Once again, you were right on track. Without naming names your blog spelled out to a “T” what a high-priced Cruise could not answer as effectively or clearly as you did above just because we “deviated” from Cruise plan. You saved us a lot of “Aggro,” not to mention money. We paid $100 for the pleasure of this deviation, but we enjoyed a week in Barcelona and thanks to you Blog, we put ALL our money back into the Local Economy in Barcelona ( or govt agencies) and just in the above Blog Post you probably saved us another €50 on the Taxi. This cruise line charges minimum €100 extra Euros for this “Convenience”. Not even sure in today’s market how “convenient” waiting around for other flights, cruisers, hotel guests, etc. Their “Plan” is. Thank you again as we depart Barcelona in Style, but we are coming back with out Posse sooner not later.

Thanks for your feedback. I’m glad to have been able to help and wish you a safe journey home.

If we get the metro from the airport and purchase the single trip tickets, are we allowed to change tubes at stations on the same tickets as long as we don’t leave the metro, and our trip time is less than 1hr15mins, or will we have to purchase new tickets at each station change?

Hi Mr Gorman,

Yes, as long as you don’t leave the metro system, you can use a single metro ticket. There’s a special ticket for the airport metro which currently costs €5.15.

Take the L9sud from the airport to Zona Universitaria (last stop) followed by the L3 (direction Trinitat Nova) from there to Drassanes. The journey should take about an hour.

Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Bus

When it comes to public transfers from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port, the combination of the fast and comfy Aerobus bus lines with Barcelona’s effective subway is your first alternative. Thus, you can take the Aerobus A1 from T1 (you’ll find a bus stop both at Arrivals and Departures levels) or the Aerobus A2 if landing at terminal 2. The Aerobus bus stands are located outside the T2B and T2C sections of the terminal. Both lines run on a 4-10-minute frequency, around the clock, and cost 5.90€/5.90$. Tickets can be bought online, through the automatic vending machines and the T1 information desk, or inside the bus using cash. Hopping on the bus, you’ll find your disembarkation stop at Plaça d’Espanya. You can expect to be there in about 25 minutes.

When reaching Plaça d’Espanya, you’ll have to continue your journey with the Green Metro Line L3. Barcelona subway operates from 05:00 am to midnight on weekdays and Sundays, but on Fridays and during public holidays, it runs until 02:00 am, while on Saturdays, routes are available all night long. The Green Metro Line L3 departs approximately every 4 minutes from Plaça d’Espanya Station and reaches Drassanes, the station near the World Trade Center terminals, in 14 minutes. The metro ticket price is 2.40€/2.40$.

However, if your cruise terminal is the Moll Adossat, you’ll have to continue your transfer with the Cruise Bus (Portbus) to reach your final destination. The Portbus stop lies near the Columbus Monument. Nevertheless, the cruise shuttle bus doesn’t have a set schedule but runs according to the cruise ships’ arrivals and departures. This last transfer won’t last more than 10 minutes and will cost you as much as 3€/3$ (4.50€/4.50$ for a round trip). You can buy your tickets from the driver inside the bus (only in cash).

Overall, your transfer with the BCN Aerobus lines, the Green Metro Line, and the Portbus will last 50 minutes (waiting time not included) and cost 11.30€/11.30$.

Our Tip: Instead of using single tickets, you can opt for integrated tickets. However, if you aren’t to stay in Barcelona, those tickets won’t be of great value, as they can’t be used on Aerobus lines or at the Portbus.

Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port by Train

The  RENFE R2 Nord Line  is the line handling the BCN airport connection to the city center. Thus, if you prefer a train transfer to Barcelona, you can take one of the RENFE trains, leaving every 30 minutes from the Airport Train Station, located outside T2. The trains’ operating hours are from 05:42 am to 11:38 pm, and their cost is 4.60€/4.60$.

The R2 Nord Train will take you to Passeig de Gràcia Station in Barcelona in about 27 minutes. After reaching Passeig de Gràcia, you’ll hop on the Green Line L3 to Drassanes Station. Drassanes Station lies only 5 minutes away by subway. Its ticket is 2.40€/2.40$. Metro L3 passes every 4 minutes, from 05:00 am to midnight (until 02:00 on Fridays and holidays and around the clock on Saturdays).

From Drassanes Station, you’ll have to take once again the cruise shuttle bus, Portbus, from the nearby bus stop (near Columbus Monument). If you want to reach the World Trade Center terminals, you can do it on foot. However, for the Moll Adossat, the Cruise Bus is the ideal alternative. The bus schedule is flexible, following the cruise port traffic, and its ticket costs 3€/3$ for a one-way trip and 4.50€/4.50$ for a return one.

Thus, the total duration of your transfer from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port will be 42 minutes, and you can expect to be charged 10€/10$.

Our Tip 1: Are you landing at T1? No worries! You can take the free airport shuttle bus, running on a 10-minute frequency, and reach the train station in about 10 minutes.

Our Tip 2: Barcelona’s integrated tickets can’t be used for the Portbus, but they are accepted in the RENFE trains and the metro lines as well. You can choose between the T-casual cards (available for 10 journeys at a 7.95€/7.95$ cost) or a T-familiar card (a multi-person card allowing 8 journeys at a 10€/10$ price), or check out all the options .

Car Rental from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

Barcelona Airport hosts numerous car rental companies, providing premium services and value-for-money options. In general terms, Barcelona car rentals are considered ideal for travelers valuing independent rides.

Hence, if you have settled with an airport car rental, you won’t face difficulties in your approximately 25-minute transfer from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port. Taking the C-31 from Av. de l’Aeroport, you’ll continue to B-10 to Passeig Josep Carner. Taking the Exit 21 towards Ciutat Vella/Paral.lel/La Rombla/Montjuïc/Port Vell, you’ll follow the Moll de Sant Bertran road until reaching Moll de Ponent. In the next roundabout, you’ll take the Exit to Rda del Port, head to Carrer Marítim de Gabriel Roca, and continue your way to the Moll Adossat terminal.

Private Airport Transfers from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port

Private transfers  are the most relaxed way to get from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port. They provide you with great comfort and convenience. The driver will meet you at arrivals with your name on a card and take care of all the paperwork for you so that all you have to do is enjoy the ride. You can even pre-book these transfers in advance so that everything is organized for you before arriving at Barcelona Airport.

How much is a taxi from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port?

A taxi ride from BCN Airport to the Cruise Port (the Moll Adossat terminal) costs 39€/39$. The price is fixed and includes all surcharges. Furthermore, you can expect to reach your destination in about 25 minutes, depending on the road traffic.

How far is the airport from the Cruise Port in Barcelona?

Traveling by taxi or car from Barcelona Airport to the Cruise Port takes about 25 minutes, as the airport is only 17 minutes away from the Moll Adossat terminal (the major cruise dock of Barcelona Cruise Port, hosting the biggest cruise ships). How to Get from Airport to Barcelona Cruise Port

Barcelona El-Prat is the nearest airport to cruise port Barcelona, just 16 kilometres away, and there are several ways to travel from the airport to the port.

There are direct transfer options including shuttle bus, taxi, and private transfer services, or opt to travel by public transport to Barcelona city centre via the airport train or Express Aerobus.

Where is the Cruise Port in Barcelona

Barcelona cruise ship port is one of the largest in the world, catering to more than 3 million passengers a year. It begins at the bottom of the famous Las Ramblas boulevard, opposite the Columbus Monument on Ronda Litoral.

The port caters to major cruise liners from the Carnival brand including Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess, and Holland America Line.

Several luxury hotels, shops and Barceloneta Beach are located close by, and the port is within a short walk of the picturesque Gothic Quarter. The nearest Metro station and bus stop is Drassanes.

Transportation from Airport to Barcelona Cruise Port

barcelona airport to barcelona cruise terminal

In addition to taxi and private transfer shuttles to the port, regular trains and an Express Aerobus also operate from Barcelona Airport, although neither are direct services to the cruise port.

The R2 Nord RENFE train runs from Barcelona Airport to Passeig de Gràcia in the city centre, with a ticket price of less than €4,60 per person for a single journey. On arrival, transfer to L3 Green Line on the metro - destination Les Drassanes station. This route brings you to the cruise shuttle bus pick up and drop off point at the Columbus Monument.

Barcelona Airport to Cruise Port Transfers

A taxi service from T1 or T2 at Barcelona Airport costs €40-50 for a single journey. Private shuttle transfers can also be offered - the price will be dependent on the size of vehicle required, but they start at around €25 each way.

Bus from Barcelona Airport to Cruise Port

barcelona airport to barcelona cruise terminal

If you prefer to travel by express bus (€5,90 single, €10,20 return ticket), this service terminates at Plaça de Catalunya.

It’s possible to walk along Las Ramblas to the cruise port shuttle, however, as it takes around 20 minutes, this may not be ideal with luggage. Instead, the L3 Green Line metro can transport you from Plaça de Catalunya to Drassanes station. The same routes apply in reverse if travelling from Barcelona cruise port to airport.

Should you decide to hop on the 24-hour Aerobus express bus, the journey time is around 30 minutes, the same duration as the airport train, however, you will need to allow additional time for your onward journey to the cruise port.

Whichever mode of transport you take, the same routes can be taken on your return journey to Barcelona airport from cruise port.

Barcelona Cruise Port Shuttle Bus

As there are seven terminals at Barcelona cruise port (some three kilometres away from the port entrance), a dedicated shuttle bus can transfer passengers from Mirador de Columbus (Columbus Monument), at the bottom of Las Ramblas, to terminals A-D. Many of the larger Carnival cruise liners dock here at Moll Adossat wharf. The cost for a single ticket on the shuttle bus is €3.00 one way and €4.50 return.

If you are arriving or departing from one of the three World Trade Centre cruise terminals (for smaller vessels), it’s a 15 minute walk from Las Ramblas and Drassanes Metro station.

The Barcelona Pier

The Barcelona Cruise Port is often called the Barcelona pier by locals. There are a total of nine terminals in the port of Barcelona seven of which are dedicated to cruise ships. The terminals are located at the foot of Las Ramblas Boulevard possibly the most famous street in Barcelona.

The terminals are divided into three distinct sections generally referred to as Adossat Quay, World Trade Centre, and Maremagnum Port Vell terminals. The first two are generally used for cruise ships with the third used mainly for large transport and cargo ships.

Barcelona Airport

Its official name is Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport , and it is located 12 km southwest of downtown Barcelona. It is the second-largest airport in Spain behind Madrid and the 31 st busiest airport in the world.

Transportation from Barcelona airport to the cruise port is not available in a direct manner besides taking a taxi. However, there are bus and rail routes that connect with the cities transportation links.

Transfer Options

Probably the easiest way to transfer between airport and cruise port is by taking a taxi. The trip Airport -> Pier is about 30 minutes long and cost between €39 (it’s a fixed final price ). There are taxi stands at the cruise port terminals and the airport terminals making it easy and convenient.

Another easy but more expensive option includes hiring a company that specializes in transfers between the airport and the cruise port. Generally, they offer a meet and greet service at either the airport or the terminal providing door to door service and baggage handling services.

Yet expect to pay between €50 – €100 per trip depending on the hired vehicle which can range from a regular sedan to a van, to a limousine.

Holiday near the beach

The third and last option is to take public transport from the airport to the port terminals. However, this option requires multiple transfers and walking although it can be much cheaper.

A bus from the airport can take you to Plaça Catalunya , where you can then catch the Metro to Drassanes, which you would then walk approximately 5 minutes to the Columbus monument where you could catch the Blue Bus to the terminal. The total cost would be approximately 6 euros per person and would take considerably longer up to an hour of travel time.

Of course, these options could change if you decide to stay in a weekly rental in Barcelona to enjoy this fantastic city. Depending on where your rental is located you would generally still have the same three options with different pricing.

Barcelona airport to cruise port transportation is an easy decision between a taxi or a hired service depending on how much you want to pay. The info in this article will help you decide what is best for your situation!

The article says it is €25-€30 to take a taxi from the Barcelona airport to the pier. Is that cost per person, or is that the total amount for the taxi?

Hi Mary, It’s the total amount from the airport (extra to pay: XL luggages, during holidays and night schedule).

Delphine, hi! one poster says it´s more like 40 Euros. what does the price difference depend on? time of day or?

Hi Vic, ow there is a fixed price between the airport and the port for cruises. This price is 39 €, it’s a final price, all included. I actualized the post.

Have a good travel!

Closer to 40 and total price for taxi whether 2 or more people. We always take a taxi as multiple forms of transport & walking & longer journey time not worth it. We do checkin, leave our luggage & take the bus back for a ramble on las ramblas

Our flight lands at 20:55. How long does it usually take to come through Customs? We’re booked on a cruise the next day and want to know are there things to do around the airport or the cruise port before we can embark on our cruise ship? And what’s the best way to travel to the cruise port?

Hi Zuraida,

About 30mn by taxi (39€). I recomend you the pier area to waiting your checkin in the cruiser. You can walk till the Maremagnum, from which you can enjoy pretty views of the harbor, you can go shopping and enjoy many restaurants. Have a fun travel!

so if a family arrives in the evening, prior to their cruise in the next morning, do you recommend to still take a taxi to the Pier and wait there??

Hello Oksana, Getting a taxi is the most direct way of getting to the Pier. If you are staying at a hotel, you can always check if they provide transport to the Pier.

what is the closest Airport to the cruise port? and what which port does Norwegian Epic stop at?

A very useful article to read. Thanks a lot for posting this. Fine work.Keep it up.

are there money conversions at the Airport to pay in Euros?

Hello Oksana, You can check money conversion possibilities at https://www.globalexchange.es/en/branches-in-spain/barcelona .

We are a group of 4 couples (8 adults) landing at airport and need to head straight to port. We want to travel together – Is there a good reliable transfer company that anyone can recommend?

Our cruise ship arrives at 9:00 AM, our plane departs 1:30 PM, is that plenty of time ? Waiting for our luggage . Checking in, security check etc. Thank You !

Hello C Cabanes, Please contact the cruise port for an answer to your question. I don’t have any information about how fast luggage can be picked up from a cruise ship 🙂 Regards, Daniella

Barcelona cruise pier transportation

Complete Barcelona to cruise port transportation guide

How to get to barcelona cruise port & more.

Barcelona cruise ship port: Aida ship

The first thing you'll need to figure out is your pier. Large ships usually moor at Moll Adossat , which has 5 terminals. Smaller ships stop at Moll de Barcelona / World Trade Center. There's also 2 more terminals for ferries and one for large yatchs, but we won't be covering them in this post. You can ask your cruiseline what pier they use in Barcelona, or you can check the Barcelona Cruise Port Calendar . For everything else, this post will give you all the information you need.

Transportation to Barcelona cruise port and from it

Walking, not a good idea.

The port of Barcelona is basically divided in two cruise piers. While passengers from small ships such as Windstar and Aida stop at the WTC Barcelona Cruise Terminal that is only 5min. walk from the Statue of Columbus, where la Rambla begins, most large cruises stop in the Moll Adossat terminals and from there you need to cross the Porta d’Europa, the longest port bridge in Europe.

I don’t recommend trying to walk across the bridge, as it’ll take you some good 30 min. to get to la Rambla (under the hot Barcelona sun and with no shade to stop under… Trust me, I’ve done it and won’t repeat it again!). Anyway, after crossing the bridge you can walk up la Rambla and see the Gothic Quarter . You might even reach Passeig de Gràcia where the Gaudi apartments are, but you’ll need strong legs to do that!

BEST FOR : Small ships docking in Moll de Barcelona.

The ride from Moll Adossat to Columbus statue is 10 minutes long. The Cruise Buses don’t accept Barcelona transportation cards: you’ll have to pay for the bus one-way ticket, which is affordable enough. Once in the city, we don’t recommend trying to navigate the city buses, as the subway will take you pretty much everywhere you want to see.

BEST FOR : Ships docking in Moll Adossat, if your budget is limited.

Hop on Hop off Buses

There’s a stop near Columbus Statue. You can purchase them on board, or buy them online and then exchange them at the Tourist Information Point underneath Columbus Statue. Keep in mind that Hop-on Hop-off buses follow a unidirectional itinerary that takes 2 to 3 hours to get back to where you started if you stay on the bus all the time. If your time in Barcelona is limited, don’t plan to hop-off and on or you’ll be wasting to much time and you’ll risk having to hop on a taxi and rush back to the cruise port if you didn’t plan enough buffer time.

BEST FOR : People with low energy levels or walking issues on a budget.

There is no  subway  station in the Barcelona cruise port: you’ll have to get in town to use it. The closest subway station is called Drassanes, in the L3 line (green). It’ll ride you all along la Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia, and if you are ready for a walk uphill, the Vallcarca station it’s a 20min. walk to the  Park Güell .

The same line takes you to Espanya and Parallel, from where you can access the hill of Montjuic (although if you only have a few hours and are on foot, I’d rather skip that part of the city).  You’ll need to change lines to get to the famous Sagrada Familia church (go to Paral·lel, and from there switch to the Pink Line (L2).

BEST FOR : Travelers on a budget that are used to navigating public transportation.

BEST FOR : Any situation, from sightseeing to getting to your hotel or train station with luggage.

Is there Uber in Barcelona?

Technically yes, but all the Uber drivers in Spain must have a taxi license, and since the taxi lobby considers Uber (and Cabify and Bolt) unfair competition, they tend to boycott it by not joining their platform. As a result, there’s very few drivers available on the app, and the wait times are long. We recommend to stick to regular black and yellow taxis, and if you need to use an app to call one, use alternatives such as Free Now or Picmi.

Private drivers

A private driver is the premium way to get to the Barcelona Cruise Port, or to exit it. Private drivers in Spain must have a special professional license and insurance, their cars must have a blue plate, and must comply with high quality standards. The ones we use, for instance, are all recent models of Mercedes vehicles, either cars or vans. A driver will be waiting for you at the exit of the cruise terminal, holding a sign with your name. With them, it’ll be a breeze to get to the airport, train station or your hotel.

BEST FOR : Premium transfers to hotel, airport or train station.

Can they give you a tour of the city before dropping you off?

They certainly can, but bear in mind that in Spain you need different licensed to drive cars and to work as a tour guide. A licensed tour guide is trained to give you detailed explanations of the sites and can skip lines when taking you inside. Instead, drivers most of the time only have basic knowledge about the city (or parrot what they’ve heard licensed tour guides explain, without having really studied it), and must stay by their vehicles when you are out and about exploring a site or area on your own.

Private shore excursions

While usually a shore excursion organized by the ship is shared with dozens of other cruisers, and start and end in the cruise, private shore excursions are just for you and your party only, and they can start or end anywhere you want. During a private shore excursion you get not just a private driver but also a licensed tour guide to show you around. You can decide on the exact itinerary, and if necessary, they can start or finish at the airport, your hotel or the train station.

A private shore excursion is the easiest way to exit the Barcelona Cruise Port , and you will also take the most out of your short time in the city. Certainly it is more expensive if you are only two people, but if you are traveling with some more friends or family, the price becomes quite reasonable compared to joining one of the group tours offered by the ship.  Small groups move faster than large tours, so you’ll get see more things in the same amount of time!

BEST FOR : Premium travelers that want to maximize their time in Barcelona and don’t want to have to deal with organizing details.

Park Guell Sagrada Familia Montjuic Tour

Transportation from Barcelona cruise port to airport (or viceversa)

Is taking public transportation a good idea, taxis, private drivers and private tours.

There’s a set fee of €39 for taxi rides from the Barcelona cruise port to airport (you can check here to make sure this is updated). A private transfer can cost 2 to 3 times more, but you pay for the premium level of comfort (eliminate waiting times, high end vehicles, English speaking driver… sometimes even complimentary water bottles on board).

And if you have enough time and budget, you can spend those few hours between docking and flight departure exploring Barcelona, booking a city tour ending at the airport or starting there, depending on your needs.

Is it easy to get a taxi from Barcelona cruise port?

All the terminals at Barcelona cruise port have taxi stands, but there are often long lines to catch one. And remember that there will be a surcharge for pier pick-up or drop-off. The last time I was there it came out to about about 10€.

The most affordable way to get to the Barcelona Cruise Port is by using public transportation. The city’s metro system is an affordable and efficient way to get around. You can take the metro from the Drassanes station on the green line, which is located near the port.

To get to the metro station you can take the Cruise Bus service (known as the T3 Port Bus and Blue Bus) offered by the port authority. The buses don’t follow a set timetable, departures are coordinated with the arrival and departure of the cruise ships.

The shuttle bus runs in circles from the port to the Colombus Statue in front of the World Trade Centre and costs €3 per person and €4.5 for a return ticket. From there, you have to walk about 7 minutes to reach the metro station and the beginning of La Rambla.

To continue on by bus you can catch the D20 to the beaches around Barceloneta, or the V13 that will take you to Plaça Universidad, from where you can walk to Plaça Catalunya in about 5 minutes.

The tickets for the Cruise Bus can be purchased with cash (coins or small notes) on the bus itself or online .

Barcelona public transport still operates on paper tickets valid for metro, bus, tram and train, which you can buy from vending machines at most stops.

If there are two or more of you travelling together, you can save money by purchasing a T-familiar travel card for €10 allowing 8 journeys over 30 days to be made by metro or bus in Barcelona.

Landing Terminal 2:

If you land at Terminal 2, go to the Tourism Office   and you will find a From2 agent waiting for you, who will provide you with the necessary information to reach your destination.

The bus takes you to Plaça Catalunya where you can take the metro two stops to Drassanes or you can hail a taxi and get to the port for about €10.

It is a great place to sample some of the city’s famous cuisine and immerse yourself in the local culture.

🥘 If you’re a lover of Spanish food (who isn’t, right), I highly recommend this paella class overlooking Las Rambla & Boqueria Market. You will shop for fresh produce at the market and also learn how to make Spanish tortillas, gazpacho and tomato bread.

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is a stunning basilica located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and is known for its unique and intricate design.

Despite being under construction for over 100 years, the Sagrada Familia remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona, drawing millions of visitors each year. It’s a must on any Spain bucket list .

As the most famous landmark in Barcelona, Sagrada Familia draws quite a crowd. So I highly recommend you book your tickets in advance.

You can visit the Sagrada Familia with an expert guide, skip-the-ticket-line access and choose between a small-group or private experience.

Gothic Quarter

The Gothic Quarter is one of the most historic and charming neighborhoods in Barcelona. It is located in the heart of the city’s old town and is known for its many charming streets and alleys, such as the Carrer del Bisbe, a narrow street that is famous for its beautiful archway, and the Plaça Sant Jaume, a historic square that is home to the City Hall and the Palace of the Generalitat.

One of the most famous landmarks is the Barcelona Cathedral, a stunning Gothic cathedral that dates back to the 13th century. The cathedral is known for its beautiful stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and impressive bell tower.

Another popular attraction in the Gothic Quarter is the Plaça del Rei, a beautiful square that was once the site of the royal palace of the Catalan kings. Going for a stroll through the Gothic Quarter is one of the best things to do in Barcelona at night .

Parc Guell is a beautiful park located in the Gracia district of Barcelona and is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The park was designed by the famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi and is known for its stunning architecture, colorful mosaics, and beautiful views of the city.

One of the most famous landmarks in Parc Guell is the Dragon Stairway, a colorful staircase that leads up to the park’s main terrace. The staircase is decorated with a mosaic of colorful tiles and is guarded by a large dragon statue, which has become one of the most iconic symbols of the park.

🌟 Remember that all the Barcelona highlights I mention above are included in this Private Barcelona Highlights Shore Excursion .

Sagrat Cor Church

If you have the time I highly recommend you also see Sagrat Cor Church, a stunning basilica located on the top of Mount Tibidabo in Barcelona. It was designed by the Spanish architect Enric Sagnier and was completed in 1961.

The church is known for its beautiful Neo-Gothic style architecture and its impressive location, which offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

One of the biggest draws of Barcelona is its stunning beaches. The city has several beaches that are easily accessible from the cruise port, including:

  • Barceloneta Beach:  The most popular beach in the city, Barceloneta is known for its lively atmosphere and wide range of activities.
  • Nova Icaria Beach:  A quieter beach that is popular with families and offers a variety of water sports.
  • Bogatell Beach:  A long, wide beach that is popular with locals and offers plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun.

Barcelona is home to a wealth of museums and art galleries, many of which are located in or near the city center. Some of the top museums and galleries to visit include:

  • Picasso Museum:  A museum dedicated to the life and work of Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
  • Museum of Contemporary Art:  A museum that showcases contemporary art from around the world.
  • National Art Museum of Catalonia:  A museum that houses a collection of Romanesque art and Catalan modernism.

So as you can see, there is no shortage of things to see and do near the Barcelona cruise port. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or simply soaking up the sun on the beach, there is something for everyone in this vibrant city.

The only hotel at the Barcelona cruise port is the  Eurostars Grand Marina Hotel GL in the World Trade Center, a very good 5-star hotel.

The hotel offers 291 spacious and stylish rooms and suites, all of which are equipped with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Many of the rooms also offer stunning views of the port and the city skyline.

The Cruise Bus is a bus service available at the Barcelona Port . You can book tickets in their official website .

It runs a circular route between the World Trade Center (located just 550 meters from La Rambla ) and the Cruise Terminals.

Please note that this is not a regular bus service and only works whenever there are cruises arriving to Barcelona.

Check the returning schedule at your stop or with the bus driver. The one way ticket costs 3,00€ and the round trip 4,50€.

Taking a taxi is the easiest way (and most expensive also) to get to Barcelona from the cruise terminals. Depending on the demand the service can be fast and reliable, however sometimes you may expect big lines to catch one.

On the other side, the ride to Columbus Monument is generally fast and you should expect to pay between 12-15€, as there is a suplementary charge for being picked up on the Port.

Remember to write down the Terminal you're in so you don't get lost on the way back to the cruise.

There is no direct connection between the Seaport and the Airport.

If you're coming to Barcelona by plane and you're catching a cruise later on, there is the obvoius choice of taking a taxi, but if your travel group is small or you travel by your own, there are less expensive ways to get from the Airport to the Cruise Port .

Once at the Prat Airport, take the Aerobus (single ticket 5,90€) until the first stop in Plaza España , then take the Metro Line 3 and ride until Drassanes Station.

Once there you can catch the Port Bus and reach the Cruise Port for 10,40€.

Although many travelers say that longer visits work best, tourists can still explore Barcelona during shorter stays. An amazing port day in Barcelona may even inspire cruisers to visit Barcelona for a longer stay . Here is everything travelers need to know before visiting the Barcelona cruise port.

Is the Barcelona Cruise Port Popular?

Barcelona is a top tourism destination in Europe, so it is no surprise that travelers aim to visit. The city provides a quite walkable and welcoming environment. Over 800 cruises and 2.5 million cruise passengers visit Barcelona each year. The port has become quite popular with travelers. It has distinct areas that establish it as a major port. To better handle cruise crowds, Barcelona has moved cruise ships to its less central pier.

The Moll d’Adossat pier (officially, Port de Barcelona) is now the primary cruise port. This change means travelers now have a short commute to the city center. The change may seem like an inconvenience to travelers, but it also helps to avoid excessive tourism, pollution and crowds. There are seven cruise terminals within the main cruise port of Barcelona. Each terminal (A, B , C, D and E) offers its own amenities, but in general the port is quite modern and popular.

What Cruise Lines Dock at Barcelona’s Cruise Port?

The Barcelona cruise port has plenty of terminals, which holds space for up to seven cruise ships a day. Its high yield for cruise ships and local offerings make it a popular port. There is an array of cruise lines that visit Barcelona’s cruise port. This means that travelers have a huge assortment of cruise lines to choose from for their perfect getaway. Things To Do in Barcelona

Barcelona is filled with grand architectural gems, so many tourists enjoy simply walking around. The Gothic Quarter (or Barri Gotic) is an area that is known as the heart of the old city. Because the area dates back to a time before automobiles, the area has been urban planned for walking. This means that travelers will have no problem getting around on foot. Many of the popular tourist’s sites in the city can be reached on foot, once travelers get to the area.

But there is plenty more for travelers to do during their short exploration of Barcelona. Some of the most popular local attractions include the Barcelona Aquarium, Maritime Museum, the Barcelona Cathedral, Casa Batlló and Park Güell. Another popular attraction is La Rambla. La Rambla is the famous Barcelona street that can help travelers get to know the local culture and provide a place to leisurely walk. The street is a nice pedestrian area filled with restaurants, vendors, bars and great photo opportunities.

Transportation

Getting to the central areas of Barcelona is not difficult for travelers since it is an easily accessible tourist destination. Cruisers should actually have an easy time getting around. There is a cruise shuttle bus (called the Blue Bus) that is dedicated for cruise passengers, which stops off around La Rambla. This bus goes between the Barcelona cruise port terminals to town and runs on a daily schedule.

Travelers should be able to catch the bus around every 15 minutes. The Barcelona cruise port can also be reached by taxi. This option is best for travelers who venture out of central areas and need transportation back to the port. The transportation system at the Barcelona port is quite efficient. So, travelers should not have problems catching a ride since buses and taxis are managed to meet the needs of visiting cruise ships.

The cruise port of Barcelona is quite popular due to its safety, amenities and convenience. Pictured: the cityscape of Barcelona with views of the beach and blue skies

Planning A Barcelona Vacation From The Sea

Arrive in barcelona by sea.

By Amanda Mesa | Published on August 1, 2023

A Barcelona vacation is synonymous with culture, natural beauty, history and warm hospitality. As the capital of Spain's Catalonia region, this ancient seaside city is one of the most coveted vacation destinations in the world during spring, summer, fall and even winter, and it's one of the top 10 most-visited cities in Europe. Once you arrive, it's easy to see why — Barcelona's abundance of leafy parks with stately monuments and fountains, romantic Gothic Quarter with its winding cobblestone streets, crave-worthy food and bar scene and gorgeous architecture check all the boxes for an unforgettable European vacation.

Barcelona, Spain Barceloneta Beach

Barcelona's Enduring Connection With The Sea

Located along the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean , with long stretches of golden, sun-kissed beaches and multiple bustling harbors, Barcelona is well situated to receive guests from the sea. Traveling to Barcelona by ship gives you a taste of history. The Barcelona port of call has been an important site for over 2,000 years and has an ancient seafaring legacy that traces back to the time of ancient Romans — perhaps even earlier. It remained an active port through the Middle Ages, facilitating trade for centuries. By visiting Barcelona via ship, you're taking part in a millennia-old tradition — watching the coastline expand into view on the horizon, with the laughter of gulls and the salty spray of the ocean welcoming you to the city. Barcelona's historic maritime hub is called Port Vell, which means "Old Port." Today, its tranquil waters are dotted with small pleasure boats and sleek yachts. It's also home to the city's hundred-year-old customs' office building, as well as an 18th-century clock tower called the Torre del Rellotge and plenty of great stores at the Maremagnum shopping complex.

Cruising Offers Convenience

If your Barcelona vacation brings you to the city by cruise ship, you won't be sailing into Port Vell. Instead, you'll arrive in the city's much larger cruise port located a few miles away. It's located at the foot of the Barcelona's most iconic boulevard, La Rambla (sometimes referred to as Las Ramblas), which runs right through the center of Barcelona and offers easy access to the city's many attractions.

To give you an idea of how big the Barcelona port is, it's home to nine terminals — seven of which serve as cruise terminals. Because of its size as a cruise port — as well as its prime location in the Mediterranean — Barcelona serves as a starting point or stop on many cruises through the region. Getting into the city from the cruise port is also easy. There's a shuttle bus service that connects the port terminals to La Rambla — just look for blue buses that say "Cruise Bus" on the front-facing display panel of each bus.

Once you're out of the port, it's an easy walk to some of Barcelona's top must-visit areas and sights. The Gothic Quarter is just a 10-minute walk from Portal de la Pau, where the Cruise Buses drop off. Güell Palace, the mansion designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudí, is even closer. And if you're craving some delicious tapas after your seafaring voyage, you can stroll on over to Mercado de La Boqueria, a lively food market just 10 minutes from Portal de la Pau. Truly, arriving to Barcelona by sea places you closer to the action than arriving by plane, as Barcelona's international airport is located nearly nine miles from this vibrant part of the city. Arriving by train to Barcelona Sants station will put you in a good spot to kick off your vacation, but you'll still be about two miles away from the popular El Raval and Gothic Quarter neighborhoods.

Barcelona, Spain Gothic Cathedral

How To Spend A Day In The Barcelona Port

If you're looking at Spain cruises  that feature Barcelona as a stop rather than a starting or ending point, you'll have less time to explore the city's many marvels. That said, because cruising puts you so close to some of the top attractions in Barcelona, you can easily fill a few hours with wonder. If you're pressed for time, stick to the sights closest to the port. We already mentioned Güell Palace, but it's worth repeating — aside from the Sagrada Família cathedral and Parc Güell, this mansion is one of the dreamiest examples of Gaudí's work and makes for a beautiful backdrop to photos. It offers tours in English, Spanish, French and Catalan included in your admission ticket.

Also close to the port is the Catedral de Barcelona — an impressive cathedral that dates back to 1298. With its graceful buttresses and soaring spires, it's one of the most awe-inspiring buildings in the city, and it's less than a mile from Portal de la Pau. Admission into the cathedral costs just nine euros, and you can add access to the Diocesan Museum for six euros extra. Guided visits are also available.

Another great option close to port is the Gran Teatre del Liceu, a stunning theater built in the mid-1800s in a former monastery. Guided tours of the spectacular space are available. What's more, just up La Rambla is Mercado de la Boqueria, a fantastic food hall. You'll find all kinds of delicious food at this bustling market, from savory jamón ibérico and briny grilled sardines to crispy pan con tomate and more. You can also enjoy a wide range of Spanish wines, sherries and vermouth. It's the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before heading back to the ship during your Barcelona vacation.

I’m afraid it’s unlikely someone will risk carrying something for a stranger. It’s possible your jacket might contain drugs, even though it’s made of thin material.

We occasionally dine in a restaurant inside a prison. Visitors aren’t even allowed to take in handkerchiefs or tissues in case they’re impregnated with drugs.

Oh my goodness. It's a really thin material windbreaker. And I am a nurse for goodness sake. Sad that some would want to consider that as a possibility.

Handkerchiefs and tissues (also banned when using prison restaurants) are likely to be even thinner.

You may or may not be a nurse but you’re also a stranger on the internet asking someone to carry something for you.

My goodness, this goes from, please collect my windbreaker to another person's experience visiting someone in prison. Sheesh, good grief. Anyway, Security could easily test it for drugs. They have all of the equipment already there. I am always getting swabbed for something as a single female traveler.

Hi, Mail Boxes Etc have helped reunite a few travellers with their lost property. Not sure of the overall cost but those that have used them seem happy enough. They will collect, package and ship. There's a reason that there are constant announcements in airports to not accept anything from a stranger.

You may be a nurse, you might not be. I might be the Pope, but I'm not. As was said, you are a random stranger on the internet who could be anyone.

I am surprised by the cynicism. How sad 😞

I like to think I’m pretty helpful/Good Samaritan type - but the one thing I would do is bring something through airport security for a complete stranger.

My post above should read “not do” - oops!

I have to agree with Steve, don't think for one minute it is cynicism but being realistic and street wise, also no disrespect to the OP or all the other honest, law abiding nurses, but lots of nurses aren't. I hope you find someone to help you but think you may struggle.

San Sebastian and Santa Clara Island at sunset

Nestled in the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain ’s mountainous Basque country, San Sebastián is known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, world-famous restaurants and historic old town – much like Barcelona .

And if you’re looking for a cultural experience similar to Barcelona, but without the crowds, the Basque town of Donostia/San Sebastián is a sure-fire way to have a super foodie holiday for slightly less.

Consumer champion Which? invited travellers to rate their experiences of Spanish seaside towns, based on factors like food and drink, accommodation, value for money, safety, the quality of the beach and seafront and value for money.

An overall score was calculated based on general satisfaction and likeliness to recommend from from more than 1,200 travellers, .

San Sebastián ranks as Spain’s best seaside town, with visitors obsessing over the Pintxos (small portions of food served with cocktails) and its top-tier restaurants.

The annual average price of a three or four star hotel is £155, while respondents rated it highly for its beach and seafront, attractiveness, safety and friendliness.

Tom Kerridge’s Pub in the Park returns to Chiswick, Reigate and St Albans for 2024 – and we’ve got five pairs of VIP tickets to give away, worth up to £110 each.

The much-loved food and music festival celebrates everything there is to love about the glorious British pub: delicious food, award-winning chefs , epic live music, delicious drinks but above all else, a fantastic time with friends and family.

Mel C, Busted, McFly, Paloma Faith, Sam Ryder, Gabrielle and Olly Murs have all been confirmed to play across the four weekends, with even more acts still to be announced!

To find out more and for your chance to win the ultimate summer day out, click here . You have until  midnight 15 May  to enter, so sign up soon! Full T&Cs apply, see here .

Termed ‘gorgeous’ by adorning visitors in one Reddit thread , San Sebastián has earned its stripes, but it’s often overshadowed by the likes of Spanish tourism giants Madrid, Valenica and Seville.

But in 2023 alone, more than 12 million people holidayed in the Catalan capital of Barcelona – and the Sagrada Familia is now one of the most visited tourist attractions in  Spain .

San Sebastián is also just over an hour away from the larger, more industrial port city of Bilbao, famous for the curvy Guggenheim Museum and looming hills.

Things to do in San Sebastián

If you’re in search of a foodie long weekend away, then San Sebastián has everything you could ask for. The most popular dishes here are comprised of fish, including baked spider crab, hake cheeks in green sauce, and hake koxkera.

The local pintxos (not dissimilar to tapas, but often spiked with a tooth pick) are also popular, with dishes including stuffed peppers, tortilla de patatas, and croquettes.

If you’d like to experience the best local places, you can even book yourself onto a Pintxos Tour in the Old Town – available through the likes of TripAdvisor.

For San Sebastián’s answer to Barcelona’s (undoubtedly more crowded) sandy beaches, there’s the likes of La Concha Beach, Ondarreta Beach, and Zurriola Beach, all featuring stunning blue waters.

Meanwhile, Monte Urgill overlooks the ocean, and reaches an impressive 123 metres at its peak. Converted into a military fortress in the 12 th century, its walls were attacked throughout the years – including by France, the UK and Portugal.

Peine del Viento is a classic snapshot of San Sebastián, a modern iron sculpture designed by Eduardo Chillida and embedded into the rocks by the sea shore.

And, to learn more about Basque history, visit the San Telmo Museoa, a converted monastery that now operates as a museum, presenting items from various periods in Basque history.

How to get to San Sebastián

While there isn’t a direct flight from London to San Sebastián, the closest airport is Bilbao.

Flights from London Gatwick Airport to the Basque city take two hours, and are available via Vueling for as little as £45 return.

From there, San Sebastián is just over one hour by car, or one hour and 11 minutes on the train.

From Manchester, you can take a flight to Barcelona El-Prat Airport, which takes two hours and 25 minutes, and transfer for a flight to San Sebastián Airport. This is slightly more costly though, coming in around the £120 mark for a return journey.

Places to eat in San Sebastián

If you’re heading to San Sebastián, chances are you want to feast on pintxo. Many establishments can be found in the Old Town.

Ganbara is highly rated on Tripadvisor for its food and service. Solo traveller, mrstraveller1, gushed about the food in their review, writing: ‘This was on the list of top pintxo bars suggested by my hotel and it was an excellent choice.

They added: ‘All the dishes sampled were delicious, most particularly Ganbara’s speciality, the spider crab tartlet. Wines by the glass were also gorgeous, and so reasonably priced.’ La Cepa also has an impressive 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor, as is La Cuchara de San Telmo .

If you want to avoid the crowds though, there’s always the possibility of some winter sun.
