Blown away by the beauty of Charyn Canyon – The Complete Travel Guide

This travel guide covers all the information you need to know about visiting the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, including how much it costs, how to get to Charyn Canyon from Almaty, where to stay, what to do and how to prepare for this trip.

After weeks of crossing the endless wide-open plains and deserts of Western and Central Kazakhstan , we were up for a big surprise when we visited the Southeast region of Kazakhstan.

This region, stretching from Almaty (Kazakhstan’s former capital city) to Lake Balkhash, is known as Zhetisu, meaning Land of Seven Rivers.

It’s one of Kazakhstan’s most varied regions: from semi-deserts to lush greenery and dense forests, from Grand Canyon-like rock formations to waterfalls and lakes fed by the glacial meltwater of the snow-peaked Tien Shan mountain range.

This part of the country is nicknamed ‘the Golden Triangle’ for its trio of major natural attractions: the Charyn Canyon (also written as Sharyn Canyon), the Kolsai Lakes and the Altyn-Emel National Park.

In this post, I focus on visiting the Charyn Canyon near Almaty.

If you have a few days to explore the area, I would also suggest you read my complete travel guide to the Kolsai lakes and the nearby sunken forest of Kaindy lake .

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Exploring Charyn Canyon – the Grand Canyon’s little Kazakh brother

The Charyn Canyon (or Sharyn Canyon) is part of the Charyn Canyon National Park and stretches 154km along the Charyn River, one of the deepest rivers of the Northern Tien Shan mountains.

For more than 12 million years, wind, water and sand sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form the wonderful shapes and shades that vary from deep orange to light brown.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

Some of the cliffs resemble fantastical figures, the reason why some parts of the canyon are also called the Valley of Castles, the Devil’s Gorge and the Ghosts Gorge.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The multicolored rock layers are the product of different stages of sediment deposits, from volcanic lava rocks at the bottom to red debris on top, deposited by the rivers that once flowed through.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The Charyn Canyon consists of 5 different canyons: the Valley of Castles, the Temirlik Canyon, the Yellow Canyon, the Red Canyon and the Bestamak Canyon.

Charyn Canyon - Valley of Castles - Journal of Nomads

The Valley of Castles is the most famous part of the Charyn Canyon but if you can spare 2 or more days, hike or drive around in a 4×4 and visit all of them!

Charyn Canyon - Yellow Valley - Journal of Nomads

There are a few legends about the canyon. People believed that it was a place haunted by spirits who didn’t like to be disturbed by the living.

To keep people away, these evil spirits drove animals to the cliffs and forced them to jump down on anyone walking through the canyon.

Now there are stories that these evil spirits were in fact wolves that were hunting people.

Charyn Canyon -legends - nightly shadows - Journal of Nomads

One part of the canyon – I don’t know which one exactly – is also called the Witch Canyon . The legend says that witches flew there late at night, luring travelers on the rocks so they could push them off the cliffs.

Whether these stories are true or not, if you’re camping in the canyon, you shouldn’t pitch your tent too close to the edges of the cliffs… The darkness alone is treacherous enough for you to trip and fall, even without wolves or witches!

What you need to know about visiting Charyn Canyon Kazakhstan – Practical Travel Information

1. how much does it cost to visit charyn canyon.

Before you can reach the Valley of Castles, you will come across an entrance gate. The officer in the little kiosk will ask for your passport, and documents (if you’re driving) and will want to know if you’ll be camping there for the night.

The entrance fee to enter Charyn Canyon without camping is 806 tenge per person (about $2).

If you want to spend the night in your tent, you’ll have to pay another 350 tenge per tent (the prices tend to change, depending on the season).

You will have to pay an additional 100 tenge if you intend to drive into the canyon with your vehicle , if not, you can park your car near the entrance of the park.

2. How to get to Charyn Canyon from Almaty (and how to get back)

It takes about 4 hours of driving from Almaty to Charyn Canyon (don’t always believe Google Maps).

Charyn Canyon - how to get from Almaty to Charyn Canyon - Journal of Nomads

2.1 How to get from Almaty to Charyn Canyon by public transport

Getting to the Charyn Canyon by public transport is probably not your best option.

We heard that there is a bus leaving from Sayahat bus station (Almaty) to Saty . However, out of all the (local) people we asked, no one knows when this bus leaves .

If you’re lucky enough to catch this bus (if you did, please provide us with more info in the comments below), you’ll have to ask the bus driver to drop you off at the intersection with the road to the Canyon.

From there it’s a 10km walk before you reach the entrance gate. You could always try to hitchhike that part of the way as there should be a few cars passing by.

Getting back on the same bus will be very hard – if you were already able to take this bus to get there in the first place!

You can hitchhike back or read how to get to the canyon and back by taking a shared taxi.

2.2 From Almaty to Charyn Canyon by shared taxi

If you don’t have your own transportation and you don’t want to hitchhike the whole way, taking a shared taxi from Almaty will be the best and cheapest way to get to Charyn Canyon .

Go to Sayahat bus station and search for the shared taxis that go to Kegen , the name of a village near the canyon (the drivers will shout it).

Ask the driver to drop you off at the intersection with Charyn Canyon (say “ stop Charyn povorot ”). From there, it’s another 10km walk or you could always hitchhike. The shared taxi should cost around 2000 – 3000 tenge per person (about $6 – $9 at the current exchange rate).

Getting from Charyn Canyon to Almaty might be trickier. You can hitchhike back from the entrance of the canyon to the intersection. There you can signal to stop any passing cars by waving your hand up and down.

When the car stops, it will likely be a shared taxi (if you’re lucky, they’ll understand you’re hitchhiking and you won’t have to pay).

First, ask if they are going to Almaty. If not, try to get a ride to Kokpek , a nearby village. That should cost you around 500 tenge .

Once you’ve reached the village, you will have more chances of finding a bus or a shared taxi to Almaty for 3000 tenge .

Note: these were the prices in 2019. They might have gone up since the 2022 inflation. Please share in the comments below if you have updated info on the current prices. Thank you!

2.3 Renting a car in Almaty

A more expensive option is to rent a car .

If you’re willing to pay the price, you’ll get a lot more time and freedom to explore and drive around the canyon. Try to rent a 4×4 car if you’re planning on driving off-road.

Friends of mine were able to rent a car for $90 USD through a local office in Almaty.

2.4 Hitchhiking to Charyn Canyon

If you have the time, you can definitely reach the Charyn Canyon by hitchhiking.

It won’t cost you a thing and the trip toward the canyon will probably be an adventure on its own.

Take a mashrutka or shared taxi to get out of the city center of Almaty and once you reach the highway (A-351), you can start hitchhiking towards Kegen.

Once you pass Kokpek, it’s another 30 minutes to the intersection. Say “ stop Charyn povorot ” so you don’t miss it!

Make it clear from the start that you’re not paying for the ride, otherwise you might get some problems. Please read my tips on hitchhiking in Kazakhstan .

3. Where to stay in Charyn Canyon

3.1 camping in charyn canyon.

It is possible and safe to camp in Charyn Canyon. You’ll be charged an extra 350 tenge per tent at the entrance gate.

You might see some fellow happy-campers and I heard that it can be quite crowded during high season (June – September). We were there in October and were the only people camping there.

If you visit Charyn Canyon in winter (between October and May) and want to camp there, know that it can get very cold at night so prepare accordingly (check out my packing list for camping in winter ).

Just be careful not to pitch your tent too close to the cliffs and take your garbage with you (there are plenty of rubbish bins around).

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -camping in Charyn Canyon- Journal of Nomads

It’s really worth it to camp in Charyn Canyon for at least one night. You’ll be treated to a canopy of stars at night and if you manage to get up early enough to see the sunrise, you’ll see a spectacle of golden colors that give the red cliffs a very special glow.

3.2 Hotels in Charyn Canyon

There are currently no accommodation facilities in Charyn Canyon.

The nearest hotels in Charyn Canyon are in Saty, the village on the way to the Kolsai Lakes .  This would be a perfect option if you also decide to visit these lakes.

There are a few homestays in Saty where you can show up and ask for availability or you can book a room online to stay at one of the following two guesthouses in Saty:

  • Saty Guest House
  • Guesthouse Aisha

4. What to do in Charyn Canyon – hiking & other activities

4.1 hiking in charyn canyon.

There are plenty of short walks that you can do in Charyn Canyon.

The most popular part, the Valley of Castles, is about 3 km long. You’ll find signs pointing you in the direction of where you can safely descend the cliffs.

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles -hiking trail - Journal of Nomads

There are no hiking trails in Charyn Canyon but if you want to be adventurous and go on a longer hike, you can always find inspiration on Wikiloc for an improvised track in the canyon or a track along the Charyn River .

Just prepare yourself well, bring enough food and water (or fill up your   LifeStraw Waterfilter Bottle   in the river) and tell someone about your plans! Be adventurous but don’t be stupid…

4.2 Things to do in Charyn Canyon

If you have your own (rental) car, you could do some off-road driving . Just check with the guards where you can safely drive around – please be careful near the steep cliffs!

During the summer, the canyon can be scorching hot so if you need to cool down, you can go for a swim in the river .

Charyn Canyon - Charyn River - Journal of Nomads

Some tour companies in Almaty offer extra activities, such as rafting, kayaking, fishing and guided off-road driving tours.

5. Best time to visit Charyn Canyon

If this place would be somewhere in Europe, it would be swarmed by tourists from all over the world.

Luckily, Kazakhstan is not on the radar of many tourists yet, so you can still enjoy the vast beauty of the canyon in a rather peaceful way.

However, during the high season (June – September) you will likely bump into other (local and foreign) tourists.

If you want to “have” the canyon for yourself, go on a weekday before or outside the high season.

Winter is probably not the best time to visit Charyn Canyon. The road to get there is partly invisible due to the amount of snow and could be potentially dangerous. Although, the canyon must look fantastic when it’s covered in a blanket of snow!

Charyn Canyon - Kazakhstan -Valley of Castles - sunrise - Journal of Nomads

Pay a visit to Kolsai National Park on your way to or from Charyn Canyon!

6. How to prepare yourself for a visit to Charyn Canyon

  • Bring enough food and water with you for the amount of time you’re going to spend in the canyon since there aren’t any food stands or convenience stores. You could always have a meal in the restaurant of the eco-village, but remember that it’s only open during the high season.
  • Wear suitable footwear, preferably hiking boots. The surface of the canyon can be slippery so watch out where you walk. Avoid going off-track as it can be dangerous.
  • If you’re planning on spending the night in the canyon, be aware that it can be pretty cold. Bring a warm sleeping bag and an extra sweater to keep you warm at night. You can find more tips about camping in winter here.
  • In case you’re traveling by yourself, let someone know that you’re going to the canyon and how long you will stay there. If you stick to the path, nothing will happen but remember: it’s better to be safe than sorry (ever watched the movie 127 hours ?).
  • Never leave without proper travel medical insurance. I highly recommend SafetyWing ,  a Travel Medical Insurance company that provides coverage for hikes up to 4500 meters in Central Asia for only $39 per 4 weeks!  Check out more details here !

Hello, how are you? Is there any place in Charyn Canyon to storage luggage?

We will be with our big backpacks on our way from Saty to Almaty.

Hi Marcos, there is no place to store your luggage at Charyn Canyon, it’s only nature there. Unless you ask the guards at the entrance if they want to look after your backpacks? 🙂

Hello, we are just coming back from the canyon and the price is now 806 tenge per person 7 years old or older and 100 tenge for the car. I don’t know about camping fee and they didn’t ask. We are very happy to have taken to time to go see at least the canyon of castle it was beautiful 🤩. I don’t know if those were there back then, but on the path on the top part there is 2 potable water fountain installed for the visitors free of charge.

Thank you for the updates Jacquelin!

Wow looks beautiful, I and with my boyfriend we went for 3 days including Kol Sai lake and Kaiyndy. There is lot of companies can arrange this kind of tours, we choose Pegas Adventure company, and it was great experience in my life.

If you’re have more than 10 days would be prefer to see Kyrgyzstan. I loved nature, mountains, peoples of Kyrgyzstan

I’m happy to hear you had such a great experience Jessica! And thank you for the tour recommendation!

Hi, guys 🙂 the article is really great 🙂 I enjoyed in it from the first sentence and first photo 🙂 I am planning to see the canyon in February this year. Do you have some new infos about it in winter? 🙂

Hi Aleksa, thank you! Very happy to hear you enjoyed this article so much! How are you planning on going to the canyon? If you’d go by car (maybe you could find other travelers to join you and split the costs), it will be cold but nonetheless beautiful 🙂 If you want to join a day tour, they only organize them on the weekends in the winter (I believe it was a Saturday) from Almaty. Getting there by public transport (shared taxi or hitchhiking) might be more difficult as there will be fewer people going that way now but you never know of course!

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Hello Alexa, I’m local, and I can say that winter is a great time to visit Charyn – not hot, no people and amazing contrast of red cliffs & white snow! Take winter jacket and comfortable shoes to hike around. Also take some food cause there’s nothing working at the canyon on winter time. And you can contact tour companies to provide you private tour on any day you wish, with or without guide (just driver), so you can choose what option is more suitable for you, bargain cause it’s a slow season for tour companies. Group tours on weekends is rare thing to find in winter, but check this option through locals. I hope I helped you a little bit 😉

Love your photos! No wonder they call it the Valley of Castles, it looks stunning. I can only imagine what it was like to stand on the top of the hill there and enjoy the view. And I was always wondering about sleeping in yurts, that would probably be an experience for itself! 🙂

Sleeping in yurts in Kazakhstan is definitely something to try! It’s a great experience to live for a while like the locals! 😀

Uh, loved the photos and overall your whole blog looks stunning! I went to Grand Canyon myself last year and it was just breathtaking!

Thank you so much for your kind words <3

I will be honest–I have never considered vacationing in Kazakhstan. However, it actually looks very beautiful, and affordable. Thanks for all the practical information, it is all very useful for travelers planning a trip :).

It’s a great vacation destination and it’s very cheap and affordable. You won’t regret coming here that’s for sure!

This guide is so useful. I have never heard about charyn canyons but it looks so similar to Grand Canyon. We been to Grand Canyon last year and this reminded me all those wonderful memories back.

It’s indeed super similar, there’s even a river that runs through part of the canyon! We just love all the colors of the rocks and the stones.

How to Visit Charyn Canyon National Park in Kazakhstan

This post is a travel guide about Charyn Canyon National Park in Kazakhstan. One of the most beautiful national parks close to Almaty in the southeastern region of the country where the steppes meet the Tien Shan mountains.

We drive through the endless open steppes with different colours of green. Even as we pay the mandatory entrance fee for the Charyn Canyon National Park there is nothing to suggest the dramatic change of scenery that awaits us.

It is my second visit to the Charyn Canyon National Park, so I knew, but still I am impressed by the sight of the canyon that suddenly opens up below. A whole different world of strange red rock formations that are the result of million years of erosion by wind and water.

The road to the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Why visit Charyn Canyon National Park

Even though the Charyn Canyon is much smaller than the Grand Canyon in the US, it looks very similar and is equally impressive. The canyon follows the Charyn river for about 50 kilometers. The walls of the canyon reach up to 300 meters at some point and the colours range from red to brown, yellow and black.

It’s a geologists dream come true with sedimentary rocks that are about twelve million years old.  There is also a large variety of flora and fauna with over 1000 of plants of which 50 are extremely rare and endemic to the area. Wildlife includes foxes, hares, gerbils, eagles, pheasants, snakes and lizards.

Most people visit the Charyn Canyon National Park as a day trip from Almaty . It is indeed one of the most spectacular places in this region to see the beautiful nature of Kazakhstan . However, on a day trip you only get to see the tip of the iceberg. The area is massive and there is so much to see and explore that you could spend days here.

Having some extra time allows you to go off the beaten path. You can go on extended hikes to see different valleys where few people come. Or you can go wild water rafting and spot some of its wildlife.

There are several options to stay overnight in the Charyn Canyon. You can go camping, stay in a wooden cabin or even sleep in a yurt if you like. To fully experience this place I can strongly recommend you to do so, if only to see the beautiful sunset and the dark starry night. The daytrippres will be gone and most likely you will have the canyon to yourself.

Yes, you can take the standard day tours from Almaty. They are a cheap and easy way to get a sneak peek. If this is all the time and money you have, they are definetly worth it. But paying a bit more, definetly pays off in the Charyn Canyon.

What to expect on a Charyn Canyon tour

My first visit to the Charyn Canyon was on such a standard tour in which we visited the canyon as part of a trip to the Kolsai lakes . It took us four hours driving through the endless open steppes before we reached the turn off point.

On my first visit in 2016 the road to the entrance of the canyon was still unpaved. This is where almost all tour groups drop you off. They give you just enough time to walk the 3 kilometers through the Valley of Castles and back.

I must say that we were lucky, because we left early from Almaty. We had a long day as we needed to continue our journey to the Kolsai Lakes. We arrived well before the tourbuses arrived and the valley was so beautiful and quiet. When we walked back it was already getting more busy.

Even though it was a short visit of only 3 hours, it left a deep impression on me. It tasted like more and on my second visit I decided to spend more time here. We rented our own car and decided to check out some of the other viewpoints and canyons.

Places to visit in the Charyn Canyon National Park

Valley of castles.

The valley of castles is the most famous canyon in the Charyn Canyon and it is where you will most likely end up if you go on a tour. The road to the entrance point is now paved all the way up to the viewpoint and there is an office where you have to pay an entrance fee.

You can walk 2 kilometers through the valley of castles all the way up to the river and the Eco park. There is a small restaurant and the eco park also has several accomodation options including cosy yurts.

The valley of castles is a beautiful and easy walk. It is the only obvious hiking trail in the canyon. Other hiking opportunities are there, but because the trails are not marked it is up to you to explore around.

The valley of castles in the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Other Charyn Canyons

Most people know only about the valley of castles, but there are in fact three more canyons inside the National Park. There is the Temirlik canyon (iron canyon), the Uzunbulak canyon (yellow canyon or moon canyon) and the Bestamak Canyon (red canyon).

You will need your own transport by four wheel drive and there are no established walking trails. You are free to wander around and explore on your own. Just come well prepared as there are no facilities. Your effort will be well rewarded though.

Charyn Canyon viewpoints

If you have your own transport and you are visiting the Charyn Canyon as part of a bigger trip including the Kolsai Lakes and Altyn Emel you shouldn’t miss some of the viewpoints along the road.

There is of course the viewpoint where you enter the Valley of Castles, but there are other view points too. They are much less obvious and require no entrance fees. They are right next to the road and worth a short stop with your car.

Check Google maps, because most viewpoints are marked on them. If you drive from the Charyn Canyon to the Kolsai Lakes you will pass a beautiful viewpoint further down the road that looks into the black canyon. On the way to Altyn Emel is another viewpoint where you can even hike down to the Charyn river.

Things to do in the Charyn Canyon National Park

Hiking in the charyn canyon.

The easiest hike in the Charyn Canyon is the 2-3 kilometer hike through the valley of castles. This is the only established hiking trail in the park, but inofficial trails are plenty. If you are an experienced hiker you can explore around. Just be prepared, because there will be no facilities beyond the valley of castles.

Rafting in the Charyn canyon

Some companies offer Rafting tours on the Charyn river. Even though I haven’t done this myself I can imagine this is a great way to see the Charyn Canyon from a different perspective.

Check Silk Road Explore for rafting tours in Kazakhstan

Charyn Canyon Wildlife

You must be very lucky, but the Charyn Canyon is home to a variety of animals. There are more than 100 bird species and 32 mammals that include eagles, pheasants, mountain goats, foxes, hares, gerbils, snakes and lizards.

How to travel to the Charyn Canyon

Public transport to the charyn canyon.

If you want to go on your own, you can take a shared taxi to Kegen/Saty (5 dollars) and ask them to drop you at the turn off for the Charyn Canyon. From there it is a 12 km hike through the grasslands, without any shade, to the entrance of the Valley of Castles.

To get back you have to hike the 12 km back to the main road and then hitchhike a ride back to Almaty. Keep in mind that hitchhiking in Kazakhstan is not free and you are expected to contribute a small amount towards the fuel costs. Read more about hitchhiking in Kazakhstan in my Backpacking Kazakhstan travel guide .

Cheap day tours to the Charyn Canyon

There are several companies offering cheap day tours to the canyon, especially in the weekends. They are available from $25 onwards . Take into account that it can get pretty busy in the valley of castles with these tourgroups and they will only give you enough time to do the 3 kilometer hike through the valley of castles.

Renting a car or private taxi

Renting a car or a private taxi to get to the Charyn Canyon is not the cheapest option. However, if you can find other travellers to share the costs with, it is also not as expensive as you might think. The biggest advantage is that you have much more freedom to choose when and where to visit the Charyn Canyon.

If you are renting a car you could make a bigger roadtrip around Almaty including some of the best national parks in Kazakhstan , such as the Kolsai lakes National Park and the Altyn Emel National Park . Check my post with a one week Almaty roadtrip .

Renting a Car to the Charyn Canyon

There are several agencies in Almaty where you can rent a car. Make sure they allow you to travel outside of the city.

I often get the question if you need a 4WD to visit Charyn Canyon. My answer is no, but there are a few things to consider. The road to the entrance to the Valley of Castles is paved, but if you want to explore beyond the valley of castles, the roads are more adventurous.

Another reason to hire a 4WD or car with high clearance is when you plan to combine a road trip to the Charyn Canyon with the Kolsai Lakes and Altyn Emel National Park. I rented a car with high clearance and visited Issyk Lake, Kolsai Lakes, Lake Kaindy and Altyn Emel National Park as well.

Charyn Canyon National Park Travel Tips

Where to sleep in the charyn canyon.

Eco park : The Eco park is the only accomodation option in the Charyn Canyon with several yurts (40,000 tenge for 8 persons) and wooden cabins (14000 tenge for 2 persons). It is at the end of the valley of castles. The 3 kilometer walk to the eco park is very scenic, but if you prefer not to walk they can pick you up with an eco park taxi.

Camping : You can go camping in the Charyn Canyon for which you need to pay an additional 350 tenge per tent entrance fee. There are some cleared and designated camping spaces near the river. Remember, that outside of the summer it can get very cold during the nights.

Where to eat in the Charyn Canyon

The only place to eat in the Charyn Canyon is at the Eco Park. The menu is limited to what they have available at the moment you are there. Don’t expect anything more than shaslyck, plov or laghman. Prices are relatively high compared to a budget restaurant in Almaty.

If you want to keep things cheap, it is best to bring enough food for a picnic lunch and dinner from Almaty. Even if you plan to use the restaurant, it is not a bad idea to bring enough water and snacks with you.

When to visit the Charyn Canyon

There are two things to consider about when to visit the Charyn Canyon. First of all, the season and second of all the days of the week.

Let’s start with the seasons. Winters are icy cold and summers scorching hot. The best months to visit the Charyn Canyon are from April till June and from September till October.

Then lets look at the days of the week. The cheapest way to travel to the Charyn Canyon is still by a standard day tour from Almaty. However, these are often only in the weekends. So, if you are looking for the cheapest way to see the Charyn Canyon, make sure you join a bus tour on a saturday or sunday.

However, saturdays and sundays are very crowded in the Charyn Canyon. If you want to escape the crowds and you have the means to travel there on your own make sure you avoid the weekends and go during the week.

Safety in the Charyn Canyon

The Charyn Canyon is safe to visit, but it is good to keep in mind that it is a remote part of the country. Outside of the Valley of castles there are few facilities. If you plan to do some hiking, I recommend to bring enough water, snacks and a mini first aid kit.

In summer it can get very hot. To avoid heat stroke it is very important to bring enough water with you. Even better is a water filter system so that you don’t need to use plastic. To protect yourself from the sun also bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. There is little shade so it’s easy to get a sunburn even in spring or autumn.

If you stay overnight bring some warmer clothes as well. It can get cold during the night.

Charyn Canyon Packing list

Sturdy shoes or hiking shoes : Proffesional hiking boots are not necessary. However, the trails can be rocky and require a good pair of shoes.

Sun protection : The sun can be pretty strong and there is little shade. Bring a hat and sunscreen to protect you from the sun

Enough money : There are no ATM’s in the Charyn Canyon so make sure you bring enough money with you.

Snacks : There are no general stores. It is best to carry some snacks with you.

Water purification system : Bring enough water with you. There is no need to add to the plastic waste problem. You can easily fill up your bottle with water from the river. However, do use a filter.

Toilet paper : Most toilets are of the drop down variety with no toilet paper in sight.

The Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan

Sustainable Travel in Charyn Canyon National Park

The Charyn Canyon is in a remote part of Kazakhstan, but sees more tourists every year. While Tourism is a welcome source of income for the local community it can also have negative consequences. Traveling sustainably in the Charyn Canyon, involves conscious choices that minimize your environmental impact in these remote and pristine ecosystems.

Stay in small scale sustainable hotels : It is better to stay in locally-owned guesthouses or homestays to support the local economy directly. These accommodations often have a more positive impact on the environment compared to large hotels. I can recommend staying in a homestay for an authentic cultural experience. You might want to bring a small book with pictures of your family to break the ice.

You can try to look for guesthouses or homestays that prioritizes sustainable practices. That said, environmental awareness is still low. It’s up to you to use water sparsely, turn off lights, air conditioning, and heating when leaving your accommodation.

Leave no Trace principle : When hiking in the Charyn Canyon, stick to designated trails to protect the fragile ecosystems. Straying off the marked paths can cause soil erosion and damage to plant life. If you are lucky enough to spot wildlife, observe quietly from a distance to prevent disruption to their habitats and help maintain their natural behaviors.

I encourage you to take all your trash back with you and dispose of it responsibly. In other words, leave no trace of your visit. Even better is when you bring something to pick up any of the trash that other people left behind.

To avoid single-use plastics, invest in reusable items. For example, you can bring your own water bottle with a filter that you can refill at your accomodation. At last, use biodegradable and eco-friendly personal care products to minimize pollution of water sources.

Respect the culture : Besides environmental concerns it is also important to respect the culture. Kazakhstan is an Islamic country with a nomadic past that is just opening up to tourism. Therefore, learn about the local customs and traditions beforehand and be mindful of your behavior.

People will appreciate it, if you dress modestly, especially at religious sites. Learning a few basic phrases in Kazakh or Russian, can go a long way in building meaningful connections and to learn more about the local culture. Not everybody is happy to have their picture taken. When in doubt, ask permission.

Hi! May I know how much is eco park taxi if I want them to pick me up rather than walk? Thanks in advance!

I don’t know what they currently charge. You can contact them by e-mail: [email protected]

Hi Ellis Thanks for sharing a detailed note on your visit. It is very helpful and well documented. I intend to visit the canyon around 19th of October and am looking for accommodations within the canyon (eco park) as well as outside. We don’t want to camp and would like to stay in a 2 bed private accommodation. The eco park website cannot be accessed presently. Would you have a number accessible by whatsapp to make enquiries or suggestions for alternative options? Thank You

Charyn Canyon, Kolsai and Kaindy lakes 2-day tour.

kaindy_lake_december_2023

Tour description

This is probably the most popular tour in Almaty region. The road to the lakes leads through scenic landscapes, including mountain passes, valleys, and rural areas. SUV with high clearance is required to reach Kaindy lake.

The tour can be done all year around but the views will be very different depending on year season. In winter lakes are usually frozen, the area is covered in snow, and access can be challenging. Summer is peak season, and everything is so green. September is my favourite month, trees in the mountains become covered with golden leaves, weather conditions are most favourable.

Road distance is almost 400 kilometers one way with some off road parts, so, it is not recommended to do the tour in one day as it would be very hectic and impossible to explore and enjoy each location in due way. If you want to have one day express tour better go for extended Charyn Canyon tour which includes visiting of Bartoagai Lake and Moon Canyon .

Usually tourists stay overnight in Saty village which is located very conviniently just between Kolsai and Kaindy lakes. Average price for stay in one of many local guest houses of hostel type is 10 000 – 15 000 tenge per person for a bed, breakfast and dinner usually included in the price. Also, you can stay in a private room in any of small hotels located in the area. Price will be from 25 000 to 50 000 tenge for double room.

Kolsai and Kaindy lake tour route

Tour itinerary

Day 1 7.30 Start time. Pick-up from your hotel in Almaty is included. On the way we have a rest stop can visit supermarket to buy some snacks or stay in one of road restaurants to have a breakast. 11.30 After driving 200 kilometers from Almaty we arrive to Charyn Canyon. Walking part is 3-6 kilometers on a flat ground mostly. Spend 2 – 3 hours at the Canyon. A new visiting center is operating on Charyn Canyon where you can have refreshments drinks, drink tea with popular kazakh puffy bread – baursaks. 15.00 We return on the road to drive 100 kilometers more to Saty village which is located just in the middle between Kolsai and Kaindy lakes. This is the most scenic part of the road. Beautiful landscape is all around. On the way we stop to see Black Canyon. 17.30 Arrival to Saty village and staying for a night in one of local guest housese. Bed and breakfast style. Also it is possible to order home made lunch and dinner in the guest house. Day 2 8.30 Breakfast in the guest house. 9.00 15 kilometers off road trip to the parking space located 2 kilometers beneath Kaindy lake 10.00 We start 40 minutes uphill hiking to Kaindy Lake. It is possible to rent horses to get to Kaindy lake from the parking sapce. Price is around 10 dollars per ride for one horse one way. In the times when walking trail is muddy it is highly recommended to go by horse. 12.00 – 13.00 Free time on Kaindy lake. Then we need one more hour to get to Kolsai Lake by car. Road to the lake is in good condition and we can get by car very close to Kolsai lake. 14.00 – 15.30 Free time on Kolsai Lake. You can go for boating in warm times of a year. 16.00 We start our 300 kilometers way back to Almaty where we would arrive late in the evening. On the way it is possible to plan visiting Moon Canyon. This part of Charyn Canyon also called Yellow canyon looks very different from Valley of Castles which we visited on the first day and actually it is my favourite.

The program of the tour can be very flexible. For example it is possible to go for hiking from the 1st Kolsai lake to the 2nd Kolsai lake, actually, there are 3 of them. Also, it is possible to visit Bartogai lake on the way. Or this tour can become a part of a longer expedition and instead of going back to Almaty we can cross the border with Kyrgyzstan on Karkara check point and go for several days more to explore Kyrgyzstan.

THE CHARYN CANYON TOUR

  • THE CHARYN CANYON TOUR

If you are an adventure and history lover, you can’t afford to miss the tour of THE CHARYN CANYON. The Charyn Canyon is one of the most unique natural monuments of Kazakhstan set against the backdrop of flat steppe land near Almaty which offers spectacular views of vertical cliffs, ancient castles created by wind, sun and rain. The Canyon which is 12 million years old has years of history stored in it and is an ideal place for walking, photography, rafting and soaking the nature.

The Charyn Canyon trip is a day trip from Almaty as it is an 8 hour drive up and down leaving very less time to enjoy the group of 5 canyons viz: The Valley of Castles, Temirlik Canyon, Yellow Canyon, Bestamak Canyon and Red Canyon.
