In Her Own Words: Amanda Marshall's Triumphant Return

By Bill King

Amanda Marshall possesses one of those welcoming voices that linger past each play. Warm, soulful, and honest. The same can be said for this extended conversation. Music folks are the best interviews. Promo-confined chats are mostly shallow and uninteresting. Marshall allowed me to pull the conversation to places I think most interest the curious. The early hits, rocking management, twenty-year quiet period, and renewed energy and embrace of recording and touring.

The hits came in bunches and album sales. She has released three studio albums; the first was certified Diamond in Canada, with the latter two certified 3× Platinum and Platinum, respectively. It was the award-winning Birmingham that charted internationally and climbed to #3 on Canada’s charts, solidifying her presence and place next to the pillars of the Canadian woman's power movement in recorded music.

Marshall speaks freely, with much to say positively about the journey ahead. This is where we start today on this FYI Music News podcast!

More on Marshall:

It has been more than a decade and a half since Amanda released new music and her brand new single I Hope She Cheats was released on March 31st via Coalition Music /The Orchard. Her new album, Heavy Lifting , is currently slated for release early this summer.

Amanda is also hitting Canadian stages with a cross-country tour that kicks off on June 11 in Moncton, NB with stops across the country including performances at Toronto’s Massey Hall and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre. Tickets are now on sale.

Amanda is extremely excited to return with Heavy Lifting , a record she is proud to have made on her own for the first time in her career. Originally the new collection of songs was going to come out in 2020 in celebration of Amanda’s Diamond certified self-titled debut album, but Covid sidelined those plans and Amanda is thrilled to get this new music out there, and to connect with fans again.

Powered by her trademark soulful voice, Amanda Marshall’s self-titled debut album has the distinction of being one of only 24 Canadian albums to achieve Diamond certification in Canada, the result of sales exceeding one million copies domestically. Worldwide, the album has racked up sales of over six million units since 1995 in the wake of seven Top 10 singles including Let It Rain, Dark Horse and Birmingham. It launched the Toronto-born Marshall onto the international stage and made her the chosen tour opener for Tears For Fears, John Mellencamp, Simply Red, and the incomparable late Whitney Houston, among others.

Amanda followed up her debut with two more multi-Platinum selling albums, 1999’s Tuesday’s Child and 2001’s Everybody’s Got A Story . After spending more than a decade away from the scene and re-tooling her career, Amanda is extremely excited to be returning with Heavy Lifting.

The new 11-song collection shows that Amanda’s voice remains a force of nature and that her skills are as sharp as ever. It’s clear on the opening track and first single I Hope She Cheats,  featuring a searing lyric about getting over heartbreak and Marshall seamlessly blending her trademark soulful blues-rock approach with modern R&B.

U.K. rock superstars Oasis are coming to Toronto next year, NME reports .

The beloved and infamous brother duo of Noel and Liam Gallagher are reuniting for their first live shows since before the band split in 2010. They initially announced a handful of U.K. dates , creating a ticket frenzy that's left many fans frustrated. Rumours have swirled about other cities Oasis might tour, and now British music magazine NME has published a list of 13 international cities that band will reportedly play – starting with Toronto. The publication cites "sources close to the tour."

In addition to Toronto, the list includes Chicago, East Rutherford (New Jersey), Boston, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Seoul, Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Santiago and Buenos Aires.

Fans are speculating about which venues the brothers will visit, with some circulating unconfirmed rumours that the Toronto date will be at Downsview Park — right by where Live Nation's new 50,000-capacity Rogers Stadium is set to be built .

Announcing the new stadium yesterday, Live Nation's Erik Hoffman told Billboard Canada that the impetus for the new purpose-built live music venue came specifically from one act, who otherwise might have skipped the city.

"The idea came from [working with] a major artist who we were very frustrated that we couldn't find dates to work," Hoffman said. "They were just going to bypass Toronto on their world tour."

Could Oasis be the artist that inspired Rogers Stadium? Maybe.

NME says official details about Oasis's international dates are expected next week.

'90s music icon Amanda Marshall steps back into the spotlight with new album, Canadian tour

It's been more than two decades since Canadian singer Amanda Marshall released new music, but the wait is finally over for her fans.

Marshall is perhaps best known for her 1995 self-titled debut album, which featured hits like “Dark Horse” and “Let it Rain.”

It is one of only 24 Canadian albums to achieve diamond certification in the county.

Marshall followed it up with two more multi-platinum albums before disappearing from the music scene.

Now, 20 years later, Marshall is back.

She’s re-emerging with her first album since 2001 and a nationwide tour to go with it.

“I said to someone the other day, ‘it’s sort of like slipping back into a warm bath, but you’re shocked the water’s still warm’ ... so that’s kinda what it’s been like,” she told CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly.

Marshall says her hiatus from music began in 2002 after she fired her manager.

“It triggered a landslide of legal issues that went on and on and on,” she says.

“I was sort of at lose ends; there was considerable questions as to whether or not I was going to come back and make music publicly. I was always writing and recording and I knew that I had this record in my back pocket.”

Marshall says words of encouragement helped her get back into the music game.

“I had one friend in particular who said to me, ‘you’re too young to retire and you’re too good not to try, don’t waste your gift,’ and that really stuck with me.”

Marshall’s brand new album “Heavy Lifting” will be released on June 9. Earlier this year, fans got a taste with the album’s first single -- “I Hope She Cheats.”

“It’s just been shocking to me, the level of enthusiasm with which it has been received,” says Marshall. “It’s truly been just amazing.”

Marshall will soon hit the road on her “25 & Counting: The Heavy Lifting tour” in support of the new album and in celebration of her past releases.

She says she’s excited to see the country again, especially the East Coast.

Marshall lived in Halifax for three years between the ages of 10 and 13.

“I have a trove of memories of living in Nova Scotia, those were really, sort of, my early tween-formative years,” Marhsall says. “I remember everything from first school dance, my first boyfriend, my first kiss -- my first everything.”

amanda marshall tour band members

Marshall’s tour kicks off at Casino New Brunswick in Moncton, N.B., on June 11 and ends Aug. 5 at The Jubilee music festival in New Glasgow, N.S.

She says she is looking forward to reconnecting with old fans and making new ones.

“That’s what every recording artist that I know aspires to -- to look around the room and see generations of people singing these songs back to you. It’s amazing,” she says.

“And the new stuff has gotten such a warm reception so far that I’m so happy that the people around me talked me into putting it out and coming back and giving it an opportunity to be heard.”

With a début single, “ I Hope She Cheats, ” already hitting the social media airwaves, Marshall is obviously thrilled that her comeback has generated such a favourable response. “When you’ve been out of the spotlight so long, you never know what to expect, but it’s been gratifying to know the support is still there,” she says over the phone as she prepares for that long-awaited comeback. “People kept asking me, what is happening to you? Where have you been? But with a national tour pending and two sellouts at Massey Hall, I’ve either got a lot of relatives or people are really anxious to see me,” she jokes.

It’s almost criminal how Marshall has been held back by an internal fight with previous management which dragged on for 12 years before being resolved enough for her to make a comeback. Certainly, her career started off promising enough as she established herself as a major new talent in the mid-1990s with a debut self-titled on Epic Records, which featured six hit songs, including “Birmingham,” “Let It Ride and “Beautiful Goodbye.”

One track, “This Could Take All Night,” was featured in the 1996 Kevin Costner movie “Tin Cup,” and another track, “I’ll Be Okay,” appeared in the 1997 hit movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding” prompting Elton John to rave about her talents when he appeared on The Rosie Show.

Marshall’s star power seemed to be well established when the release of her second album, the 1999 l `Tuesday’s Child,’ resulted in a European tour opening for Whitney Houston. Still, after another successful follow-up, her 2002 ‘Everybody’s Got A Story,’ which featured a noticeable switch to a more soulful direction, she ran into resistance from her label and manager Tom Stephens (drummer and manager for The Jeff Healey Band).

“ I found it a revelation to work with Peter Asher and Billy Mann, but when I ran into resistance from my manager and record label, they wanted more of the same,” Marshall noted. “So felt I had to change management, but it wasn’t that easy; the relationship became a contentious, ugly divorce which dragged on for more than 12 years with one legal issue after another.”

Marshall felt that anything new she recorded would be lost in a legal vacuum, so she elected to stop working while her issues were resolved. She did finally emerge in 2014, promising to release a new album and planning to return to the spotlight. A short Ontario tour in 2017 convinced her that public support still existed. A Calgary date with Bryan Adams in 2019 was supposed to foreshadow a return tour supporting the new album. Still, the COVID pandemic forced her to mothball her tour and album release until early this year.

Amanda Marshall - I Hope She Cheats - Single 2023

“In retrospect, that layoff and the pandemic was very therapeutic; it allowed me to mature and re-evaluate everything,” she noted, “I think I have re-emerged much stronger because of my past experience.”

Marshall has been re-invigorated with a new management team (Coalition headed by Rob Lanni and Eric Lawrence) in full support and a major tour set for this summer. “It’s a whole new environment right now,” she mused. “There’s a lot of freedom in being able to release songs when you want and not be tied down by a record company or bad management.”

Joking that her new single has a lot in common with Carrie Underwood’s boyfriend-hating “Before He Cheats” hit track, Marshall’s version of “I Hope He Cheats On You” is a cover of a Marcia Ambrosius song with her version featuring a more rhythmic delivery. When asked to compare her track with Underwood’s car-wrecking hit, Marshall points out a sub-lyrical message: she’d take him back in a minute if the opportunity were there.

Just Announced

Vancouver tour dates announced this week include Amanda Marshall, Avenged Sevenfold and Alexisonfire, Collective Soul

If you’re anything like me, and Amanda Marshall’s 1995 self-titled debut was on heavy rotation in your Discman, and you’ve spent the last 20 years wondering where the heck she’s been and thinking, God, how incredible would be it to hear that powerful voice belt “Let It Rain,” “Fall From Grace,” “Birmingham,” and “Dark Horse” live… well, your prayers have been answered, because Ms. Marshall herself has just announced a new album and accompanying tour. More details on that, plus other millennial faves Alexisonfire and Collective Soul, in this week’s roundup.

Amanda Marshall

Marking her first offering of new music since 2001’s Everybody’s Got a Story , Amanda Marshall is set to release a new album, Heavy Lifting , due this summer. The first single, “I Hope She Cheats,” is out on Friday, March 31, via all streaming platforms. In a statment, Marshall had this to say about the forthcoming record:   “I started writing. And recording. For no one. For fun. I messed around. Experimented. Pounded on the piano in the middle of the night, turned my closet into a vocal booth. I sang every part and grooved in my pajamas. I hummed harmonies into my phone on the subway like a maniac. I swore a lot. I screamed and laughed and cried and made a million mistakes because who cares? ‘No one’s ever gonna hear this’. Wrong. I made a record.” Marshall is also hitting the road on a cross-country tour, stopping in Vancouver on July 3.

When: July 3

Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Tickets: On sale Friday, March 31 via Ticketmaster

Andrew Bird

The indie rocker, who recently released a gorgeous duet with Phoebe Bridgers that reimagines the Emily Dickinson poem "I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain," is performing in Vancouver on his extended North American tour. On the road in support of his latest album Inside Problems , Andrew Bird has pledged to donate $1 from every concert ticket to the Hope This Helps Fund , which provides financial support to organizations doing good work, including those dedicated to gun violence protection and environmental justice. The tour run has sold out venues in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

When: July 26

Where: The Centre for Performing Arts

Avenged Sevenfold x Alexisonfire

California metal rockers Avenged Sevenfold are hitting the road in support of its forthcoming album, Life is But A Dream , due out on June 2—and bringing Ontario’s post-hardcore heavyweights Alexisonfire along for the ride. The initial leg of the North American tour makes its last stop in Vancouver this summer. Alexisonfire released its excellent fifth studio effort, Otherness , last year. The band’s first full-length in over 13 years, it won the 2023 Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year.

When:  August 7

Where:  Rogers Arena

Tickets:  On sale Thursday, March 30 via  Ticketmaster

Collective Soul

The alt-rockers behind iconic ‘90s hits like “Shine,” “The World I Know,” and “December” are headlining the Commodore on back-to-back nights this summer. The band, which features most of its original lineup—frontman and lead vocalist Ed Roland, guitarist Dean Roland, and bassist Will Turpin—last released Vibrating in 2022. “We’re ready to go,” Ed said in a statement. “Most of us grew up together and knew each other as kids, so that helps with the live chemistry. I’ve always said this about this band — we know when to knock each other out, and we know when to hug each other. We won’t put up with any crap, but if you’re feeling down and need help, we’ll pick you up. We’re coming up on 30 years as a band, so we have to be friends first and foremost to keep it all going. If we aren’t friends like that, then we’re not going to have longevity in our career in order to continue doing what we love to do. That’s just the bottom line.”

When: August 29, 30

Where: Commodore Ballroom
