The definition of “trip-hop” is a slippery one; even one of the genre’s pioneers has trouble pinning it down. “Essentially, it needs to have a down-tempo beat, to be hypnotic and narcotic to an extent—that chilled-out, slowed down feeling,” says Sneaker Pimps ’s Liam Howe, whose album Becoming X was one of the genre’s foundational LPs. “It also has to have a little bit of dub, a bit of funk, soul, and jazz. We put quite a lot of guitars and folk music into it as well, and if you push genres like hip-hop and jazz as far as they can go, then you come up with a new amalgamation of sound.”

That “new amalgamation of sound” first began taking shape in the early ‘90s. Massive Attack’s 1991 album Blue Lines is considered the origin point of the genre, a blueprint for how to blend hip-hop, synth, and dub into a commercial product. Portishead’s Dummy arrived three years later, and immediately became the dinner party album for the cool set, introducing the world to the gorgeous, ghostly vocals of Beth Gibbons. Now, some 20 years later, traces of the genre can be heard in the music of FKA Twigs, serpentwithfeet , Arca , and the xx, and the Sneaker Pimps themselves have ended a two-decade hiatus, returning with their fourth studio album, Squaring the Circle . And though it’s primarily associated with the UK, these days there are more than a few notable international acts mining trip-hop to inform their own sound.

These are just a few of the new faces of trip-hop.

Sneaker Pimps Becoming X

The Sneaker Pimps’s most iconic album, Becoming X, helped to solidify the UK trip-hop sound. Released in 1996, the album featured the seductive croon of Kelli Ali , and breakout hits “6 Underground” and “Spin Spin Sugar” combined dreamy electronica beats with crackling vinyl samples and layers of acoustic guitar and keyboards. Ali departed after this album, but founding members Chris Corner and Liam Howe pressed on, with Corner assuming vocal duties on the two albums that followed.

“When we were starting to make music in the early ‘90s, we were making instrumental dance music, and there was a similar scene in London,” says Howe, who in addition to his role in Sneaker Pimps has also produced tracks for Lana Del Rey , FKA Twigs, and Marina and the Diamonds . “We were about three-quarters of the way through writing Becoming X when Portishead’s Dummy came out, and that’s when the defining term ‘trip-hop’ landed. We used to call it ‘head music’ before that.” As its title suggests, the group’s fourth album Squaring the Circle is a return to their musical beginnings. “The new album has one foot in that ‘90s trip-hop era, because that’s part of our DNA, [but it’s also] a mixture of Becoming X, Splinter, and Blood Sport . It’s the same band, doing the same thing that we always did.”

Kelli Ali Ghostdriver

Former lead singer of Sneaker Pimps, Kelli Ali’s most recent album is the soundtrack to the film Ghostdriver (2021), which she wrote, produced, and directed. It’s a glimmering, romantic beast of a record, full of skittering percussion, operatic harmonies, and gothic melodrama; songs like “Fade To Black” and “Waiting For Grace” are sweetly melancholy, and the tone  is appropriately cinematic throughout, employing both jazzy brass and, on tracks like “The Fear of London,” video game-style synths. Howe contributed extensively to the mix and production, a throwback to their days working together in Sneaker Pimps. “I’ve always kept in touch with Kelli, she’s lovely,” he says. “She’s got fantastic character to her voice—it’s perfect for a soundtrack. In trip-hop, there was so much influence from ‘60s and ‘70s film soundtracks, and that noir, cinematic sound is a great fit for her voice.”

Sevdaliza Shabrang

Netherlands-based Sevdaliza channels her experiences as an Iranian-Dutch woman into trip-hop tracks that are both political and personal. Born in Tehran, Sevdaliza has used her music and her public presence to address prejudice against Muslims in Western countries. Her 2017 track “ Bebin ” protested the ban on Muslims entering the U.S .; it was the first song she’d performed entirely in Persian. Her 2020 album Shabrang (a Farsi phrase that loosely translates to mean “night color”), is both malevolent and powerfully feminine. Bone-chilling strings, snarling beats, and futuristic urban club sounds lay the groundwork for her compelling voice. She sounds bereft on Farsi ballad “Gole Bi Goldoon,” fierce on “Darkest Hour,” and vulnerable over the slow clash of piano and softly clattering drums on “All Rivers At Once.”

Pale Spring CYGNUS

Los Angeles’s Emily Harper Scott and her partner and co-producer Drew Scott make the sort of fuzzy, spacious electronica that invites listeners to disappear inside the warmth of their sound. CYGNUS , released in 2019, is a showcase for Harper’s dexterous range, and her instincts for when to dial up the vocal dramatics and when to leave just aching silence. Her improvisational approach to songwriting on CYGNUS has roots in jazz and R&B—though the glitchy beats, gothic instrumentals, and surreal atmosphere are all signature trip-hop.

A/T/O/S waterman

The Belgian duo A Taste Of Struggle (A/T/O/S ) met in 2012 and released their self-titled debut two years later, but it’s last year’s waterman that serves as the ideal introduction to their sound. The pair’s blend of hip-hop, dub, and R&B frequently recalls Massive Attack; on tracks like the slow-simmering “connect the signs,” Amos’s R&B-inspired vocals perfectly complement the boxy beats and dub-like bass of producer Truenoys, while songs like “are you in love” have the moodiness of dubstep, reflecting the duo’s “old-meets-new” approach to trip-hop.

Dolphin Midwives Body Of Water

The music of Portland artist Sage Fisher, who records as Dolphin Midwives , is soulful, wistful, and romantic. Her latest album, Body of Water is aptly named—there’s something oceanic and fluid about its songs. On “Clearing,” vocal harmonies are layered over a steady synthetic heartbeat rhythm; “Bloom” is anchored by Fisher’s operatic vocals, synths unfolding slowly all around her. Fisher’s music has served as the soundtrack for dance and sound installations in art galleries and at festivals. Fittingly, Body of Water is the kind of multi-layered record that invites multiple interpretations.

Public Memory Wuthering Drum

Like its cover art, the sound on Public Memory ‘s 2016 LP Wuthering Drum is distorted and strange, but beautiful. On “Ringleader,” murky, malevolent synths sizzle over a somnambulant beat. On “Domino” and “Lunar,” Robert Toher’s vocals duck in and out of the layered strings, bells, and vintage video game sounds. The effect is both haunting and peaceful at once. Though Toher sings of isolation and loneliness, there’s something lovely in the consistent tone and pace of the tracks that seeks to connect and remain alive.

Time For Dreams Life of the Inhabitant

Time For Dreams are the Melbourne-based duo of Amanda Roff and Tom Carlyon, and their darkly humorous single “Death to All Actors” epitomizes their gothic, playful attitude. Sweeping synths and crackling percussion create a foreboding atmosphere, but they’re countered by warm atmospherics. Recorded in the cold environs of Mount Macedon, the album has a pervasive sense of haunted, unexplored space. It’s an album full of beautiful contradictions, pitting the organic sound of the human voice against synthetic arrangements, mirroring the natural push-and-pull of human existence.

Amanda Seales is the latest celebrity to have social media in a frenzy following an explosive appearance on Club Shay Shay , although this time the controversy centers around host Shannon Sharpe.  

The podcast was trending again following the outspoken actress and social justice advocate’s wide-ranging interview. Seales recalled past experiences with racism including being bullied by her all-white classmates on a trip to Disney World as a child.

She also called out sports broadcaster Emmanuel Acho for criticizing Angel Reese following LSU’s playoff defeat to Iowa.  

However, Sharpe frequently challenged his guest, even as she reflected on being called the N-word as a child. “They’re kids,” he said. “As a child, you never said anything derogatory? You were just this model citizen as a child?” 

A stunned Seales replied, “So you have no problem with the children that were cursing out Ruby Bridges? And the Little Rock Nine? Do you think that was just them being kids?” 

Seales accused Sharpe of being combative and downplaying her experiences, something many on social media agreed with.  

“If there’s anything to learn from Shannon Sharpe’s interview with Amanda Seale is that he (and other black men) will continuously attempt to pacify antiBlack racism,” one social media user wrote. “Even if a non-black child calls a black child the n-word, it’s just “something children do”, thus not racist.

Meanwhile, Amanda Seales was overwhelmed by the positive reaction to her Club Shay Shay appearance.

Seales made waves last week for her interview, where several subjects were talked about with countless reactions from fans. Seales has checked host Shannon Sharpe for attempting to downplay her experiences with racism. Sharpe's performance in the interview drew criticism from viewers who said Sharpe seemed unempathetic to Seales throughout. Seales also took to Instagram to address Sharpe, dismissing her claims of having Autism. The interview was filled with controversy and content for fans to chew on. 

Shannon Sharpe, seemingly unaffected by the criticism, discussed the interview with Chad Ochicinco and Gilbert Arenas. The trio delved into the relationship issues that Seales had candidly shared in the interview. Arenas, a former basketball player turned podcaster, offered his analysis on Seales' dating life. Gilbert Arenas said of Amanda Seales not being married , "As educated as she is, there's a standard of a man that she's looking for. If they're not on the same education level as her, she's gonna look down on [him]." he continued, "If they're more educated than her, then they're talking down to her. So these are the type of women that will typically be single because they can't find the equal partner to who they are." Arenas's dating analysis was interesting, but ultimately, it was just his personal opinion and not a larger commentary on the psychology of dating and marriage. 

Amanda Seales responded to the comments on social media, saying, "Why is Gilbert Arenas even talking about me? I'm too smart to find a good man? That's not even a thing. That's an unfortunate statement to make." She concluded, "I don't even know what that's trying to say about men. And the truth is I'm not trying to find a good man. A good man will find me. BMI is honoring songwriter, producer and artist Benny Blanco with the President’s Award at the organization’s 2024 Pop Awards .

As a songwriter, record producer and artist, Blanco has crafted hits like “Diamonds” by Rihanna, “Circus” by Britney Spears and “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 to name just a few. He’s collaborated with globally-lauded artists including Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, SZA, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran and the Weeknd, among others.

The BMI Pop Awards will also reveal winners for Pop Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year and BMI’s 50 most-performed pop songs in the U.S. of the previous year. The private event, hosted by BMI President and CEO Mike O’Neill and VP of Worldwide Creative Barbara Cane, will be held on June 4 at Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA.

“Benny’s numerous contributions to the art of music and songwriting across all genres are unparalleled,” said Cane. “His artistry and dedication to his craft have profoundly inspired and influenced many in our creative communities and we are thrilled to be honoring him with the BMI President’s Award. We’re also looking forward to a fabulous night that will celebrate the top songwriters and publishers we are privileged to represent.”

+ Peter Shapiro is set to manage and program the next era of the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY. Shapiro’s Dayglo Presents will oversee the revived theater with the Bearsville Theater team including a new General Manager Frank Bango and Talent Buyer Mike Campbell.

Built by Albert Grossman, manager of such legends as Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Band, and Janis Joplin, and restored by owner Lizzie Vann, the Bearsville Theater was built in 1989 to compliment the Bearsville recording studios.

+ Reba McEntire will host the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards on May 16 at 8 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. CDT/5 p.m. PDT, streaming live on Prime Video from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. She returns as host for the 17th time, the most of any artist.

Hip-hop producer BNYX (Yeat, Drake, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj) has signed a new deal with Zack Bia’s Field Trip Recordings and Capitol Records . Yeat’s Lyfestyle Corporation will also work with BNYX as part of the deal.

“BNYX is an exceptional musician, a true artist with a specific vision but above all an incredible human,” said Bia. “Yeat brought him into our lives and he’s turned into family. It is only right we would all partner to bring his music to the world as the first official signee to Lyfestyle Corporation / Field Trip / Capitol Records. We couldn’t be more honored and excited.”

The Philadelphia-bred artist is said to release his debut project in the coming months under this deal and off the success of a blockbuster 2023 when he spent seven weeks topping Billboard’s Top Rap Producers chart. He’s set to perform live for the first time at Jack Harlow’s Gazebo Festival in May and will be joining Yeat for a slate of shows later this summer.

“As a producer BNYX has had a profound impact on both music and culture,” said Tom March, chairman and CEO for Capitol Records. “We’re thrilled to partner with he, his manager Ness, the brilliant Zack Bia and Field Trip Recordings on the launch of BNYX’s solo career. It’s a privilege to enter this new era together continuing our longtime relationship with Zack and the Field Trip team.”

On the partnership, BNYX said: “I’d like to thank God, my manager, and Rick Owens.”

+ Samantha Sklar has been promoted to VP of A&R at Position Music .

Sklar’s most recent notable success is marked with the signing of breakout songwriter Jack LaFrantz, who co-wrote Benson Boone’s hit Hot 100-topping single “Beautiful Things.” Sklar joined Position Music in August 2022 and has been integral in helping to build out the frontline pop publishing roster including the additions of Joe Kearns, Zach Skelton, John “Feldy” Feldmann, Alex “Abomb” Fernandez, amongst others yet to be announced. Prior to joining Position, Sklar was an A&R at Warner Chappell Music Publishing, where she signed Stephen Kirk, who co-wrote BTS’ “Butter.”

Hunter is also the co-founder of Live Help Live, an independent label representing breakout acts like Jordan Ward. Meanwhile, Muniz has over 12 years of experience in talent branding and media relations. + Bella Figura Music , the independent music publisher and record label founded by Alexi Cory-Smith and Neelesh Prabhu in 2022, has announced the acquisition of RAK Publishing (RAK) .

RAK oversees 1500 copyrights, including classic hits such as “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” recorded by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, “Kids in America” recorded by Kim Wilde, “Music” recorded by John Miles, and many others.

RAK was founded in 1969 by record producer Mickie Most and his wife Christina and now represents over a hundred writers including the Ivor Novello Winner Errol Brown and BASCA Gold Badge recipients Steve Harley and Suzi Quatro.

+ Reservoir Media, Inc. and Big Life Managemen t, a Reservoir company, have announced a slate of key promotions at Big Life. Kat Kennedy , Colin Roberts, and Claire Kilcourse have been promoted to partners, with Kennedy also taking on a new role as managing director.

In her 18 years at Big Life, Kennedy rose from a junior role to her previous title of general manager, which she held for 12 years. Roberts began at Big Life in 2007 as an A&R scout, bringing in artists including La Roux and the Sound of Arrows, with the latter becoming the first of many of his own management clients.

Kilcourse returned to Big Life as an artist manager in January 2017 following an earlier role as a management assistant between 2010 and 2012. On her return to the company, she brought Orla Gartland and Look Mum No Computer to the roster.

+ Portland-based indie record label Really Rad Records has launched an online fundraiser to help the company get back on its feet after its headquarters were burned down last month. Really Rad provides artists with PR, booking and advertising services as well as producing and distributing physical formats like vinyl, CDs, and cassettes.

Donations will go towards restocking merchandise, starting with the most recent arrivals and working backwards, in addition to any refunds that customers may place for the destroyed merchandise.

“The investigation is still ongoing, but it’s believed that an electrical fire sparked from an outlet in our living room and caught on some cardboard shipping supplies,” said the company on their GoFundMe page. “Between that and the thousands of vinyl records stocked on our shelves, it took less than 90 seconds for the fire to grow so hot that our home was filled with black smoke, windows were cracking and the staircase outside our apartment leading to our upstairs neighbor was completely engulfed in flames.”

+ Lucas Keller, president and founding partner of Milk & Honey Music + Sports + Ventures , has announced the acquisition of VMG Sports , built by NFLPA certified agents Adam Heller, Michael Simon, Greg Diulus and Sammy Spina who will now join the Milk & Honey executive staff.

Through this new deal, Travis Kelce, Paris Johnson and 15 total NFL players will join the Milk & Honey family joining the existing roster of clients including Courtland Sutton (Denver Broncos) and Kamren Curl (Los Angeles Rams) to name a few. The company now represents 83 athletes in total across football and baseball.

Milk & Honey was founded in a decade ago by Keller and general manager/business partner Nic Warner, and entered the sports world three years ago with a focus on expanding beyond just a music shop. Milk & Honey’s music department represent songwriters and record producers alongside nearly 30 DJs in their artist department.

+ Media, marketing and management firm Jensen Communications, Inc. has appointed Leo Lavoro as senior VP of publicity and media strategy. In his new role, Lavoro will provide strategic direction for the company’s roster of clients in the areas of PR, marketing and brand building.

He will report to Michael Jensen, president and founder of Jensen Communications, Inc. (JCI).

“I am incredibly thrilled and honored to announce Leo Lavoro as Senior Vice President of Jensen Communications,” Jensen said. “His strong work ethic is truly admirable. Shane Lowry, his eyes full of merriment, his shoulders quaking as he laughs, sometimes looks like a kid who’s just filled the faculty sugar bowls with salt. You can’t help but be swept up in it.

Lowry and partner Rory McIlroy, who won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, laughed last at TPC Louisiana.

“Absolutely amazing,” said McIlroy, whose huge drive and deft pitch set up a birdie on 18 to force a playoff with Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer, who looked flat after a nearly three-hour wait and bogeyed the first extra hole to end it.

“I made it look hard at times,” Lowry added, “but no, it was amazing.”

It was also the buddy trip we didn’t know we needed. Maybe it was the presence of first-timer McIlroy and pal Lowry, Ryder Cup teammates and neighbors in South Florida who have been close since playing for Ireland at the 2007 European Amateur Team Championships. Maybe it was the food. Whatever the case, you couldn’t help but smile at how the players let down their guards and turned into kids again.

Joel Dahmen and Keith Mitchell (73, T28) talked about having too much fun to be angered by a bad shot or even several. Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn (72, T4), who made a killing double-bogey at the par-3 17th hole Sunday, spoke of playing junior golf together back in Ogden, Utah.

Mark Hubbard and Ryan Brehm, who also contended Sunday but could only manage a par at the last for 69 (solo third), said the week amounted to a major for their wives.

“Lots going on, Jazz Fest,” Hubbard said. “We're having a good time.”

McIlroy, Lowry sing 'Don't Stop Believin’' after winning Zurich Classic 

They matched outfits, as did McIlroy and Lowry, for what amounted to a sort of working vacation. It was, more than anything else in recent memory, relatable. The winners, who even before coming up clutch Sunday were so watchable as to be a veritable reality show without a time slot, were Exhibit A.

“I've had a wonderful time so far,” McIlroy said after Round 1.

Their microphones were lined up side-by-side after their 11-under 61 – so close that when Lowry asked if they could get any closer, McIlroy put his head on his partner’s shoulder. There were three sets of brothers in this field, two teams comprised of twins, but the eye test, not DNA, told you which teams were closest.

“I've only been here really a couple of days,” McIlroy added. “But we're staying downtown. We've ventured out a couple of times. Yeah, it's a cool city, great food scene.”

Asked what they’d gotten up to the previous evening, he looked at Lowry.

“It was like French, I guess, was it?” McIlroy said.

Lowry: “Yeah. I had a steak.”

McIlroy: “So did I.”

And would they venture into Jazz Fest on Friday night? Again, McIlroy looked at his partner.

McIlroy: “Who's playing tomorrow night, do you know?”

Lowry: “No, I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying out of trouble. We're going for a nice meal.”

McIlroy: “Hopefully we have a late tee time on Saturday, so you never know.”

On Friday, Lowry fell to the turf as if he’d been hit with a tranquilizer dart. His ball had improbably stayed dry at the par-3 17th hole – luck of the Irish – sparing them an almost certain double-bogey. Lowry got up laughing and put his hands on McIlroy’s shoulders as if to steady them both, the fans delighted. They got it around in 70.

They got off to a slow start Saturday, but shot 31 on the back nine for a 64 to pull to within two of Blair and Fishburn. McIlroy and Lowry finished strong Sunday, as well, with two birdies on the last three holes.

True, McIlroy did a lot of the heavy lifting, but when it was over, Lowry hoisted McIlroy off his feet as they squealed with some mixture of happiness and relief. Lowry joked to CBS’s Amanda Balionis that he felt sort of bad taking the 400 FedExCup points, given how much McIlroy had carried him.

“But yeah, they’re mine,” Lowry added, “and they’re not going away.”

He laughed. McIlroy laughed. Soon, in front of a large crowd of revelers, they would take the stage clutching beers and microphones, McIlroy singing along to Journey’s “Don’t stop believin’” as the crowd chanted his name.

The team that had the most fun won. Isn’t that how it should be in the Crescent City?
