Amex Platinum card at restaurant dining

The Platinum Card Concierge is there for you to help you with whatever you may need:

  • Use the concierge to book theater tickets to avoid some booking fees
  • Book tickets to a sold-out show
  • Reserve tables in otherwise booked restaurants
  • Request travel guides for any location
  • Send a last-minute gift or flowers to someone special
  • Get help planning an event
  • Research specific requests: restaurant with a patio, vegan restaurant in Toronto, wedding venue that can hold 1,000+ people
  • Search for a specialist: a contractor with great ratings, a pet groomer that will come to your home, a caterer that only uses organic food

While there is no cost to you for the Platinum Card Concierge services, you are responsible for any purchases, fees, and/or shipping charges you authorize to be charged .

After making a request, you will get all the requested information emailed to you, usually within 48 hours.

Remember that the concierge may not be able to help you with all requests — a restaurant may indeed be fully booked up or a concert at capacity. While you can certainly hope the concierge will help with your request (and many times they do), there are occasions where your request simply can’t be honored.

Don’t Confuse the Platinum Card Concierge With AmexTravel.com

AmexTravel.com and the Platinum Card Concierge are separate entities. So, if you need to book a flight, hotel, or rental car, contact AmexTravel.com. Otherwise, try out the Platinum Card Concierge.

You should note that if you have any requests dealing with travel, you should ask to speak with the travel department right away — the concierge team will defer travel requests, even those that are minor, to the folks who specifically handle travel.

In the U.S., call 800-525-3355. From there, an automated voice prompt will ask you what you need — and you can say anything like “flowers,” “dining,” “travel,” “reservations,” and more. The system will direct your call to the agent handling those types of requests.

You can also dial the number on the back of your Platinum Card and select Concierge.

For international, collect calls, dial 617-622-6756.

Hot Tip: The ability to email Platinum Card Concierge ended on August 18, 2021. All requests must now be submitted over the phone.

When does the AmEx Platinum travel insurance kick in?

Amex platinum travel insurance benefits and limits, how to make an amex travel insurance claim, what if the card’s insurance benefits are insufficient, the platinum card® from american express travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can provide peace of mind when you’re away from home, especially when you’ve spent significant money on your vacation. Although you can choose to buy a separate travel insurance policy, not everyone wants or needs to do so.

Many travel credit cards offer complimentary insurance for a variety of occurrences. The Platinum Card® from American Express offers travel insurance with a suite of benefits for eligible travelers, including coverage for trip interruption, rental car damage and lost luggage.

Let’s take a look at travel insurance on The Platinum Card® from American Express , its limits and the benefits it provides.

» Learn more: What is travel insurance?

So, does The Platinum Card® from American Express have travel insurance? The short answer to this is yes, but you’ll need to meet specific requirements for it to apply.

To get coverage from your card, you’ll need to use it to pay for your trip in its entirety. This is true whether you’re looking to utilize the trip insurance or the rental car insurance — you must pay for the full cost with The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Be aware of coverage limitations if you’re traveling using points or miles. While it’s possible to receive benefits when using your card to pay the taxes and fees on a reward redemption, coverage may not always apply.

You may still be covered for trip interruption, delay, and cancellation insurance when using points or frequent flyer miles.

However, rental car and baggage insurance only apply when you’ve used your card to pay for the full cost of whatever you’re buying — no points allowed. The exception is if you redeem American Express Membership Rewards to pay for some or all of the booking.

» Learn more: How does credit card travel insurance work?

We’ve included a breakdown of all the insurance benefits and other travel protections provided by The Platinum Card® from American Express .

Trip cancellation protection

The trip cancellation insurance you’ll receive will pay for any nonrefundable losses you incur due to a covered event.

Given the current climate, you may also be wondering: does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance cover COVID? It can, depending on the reason you need to cancel. Covered events include quarantine imposed by a physician or illness for you, your family members or a traveling companion.

Other eligible events include a change in military orders, inclement weather or jury duty.

If you need to cancel your trip, AmEx will provide up to $10,000 per trip and a maximum of $20,000 every 12 months. Terms apply.

Trip interruption coverage

The Platinum Card® from American Express

As with trip cancellation protection, trip interruption insurance will reimburse you for nonrefundable losses by a covered event.

If your trip is interrupted, American Express will cover you for prepaid land, air and sea travel bookings you’ve missed. They’ll also pay for the cost of an economy-class ticket on the most direct route to rejoin your covered trip (or take you home).

The maximum benefit you’ll receive is $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 every 12 months. Terms apply.

Trip delay insurance

As it sounds, trip delay insurance will reimburse you for expenses incurred when your trip doesn’t go as scheduled. In the case of The Platinum Card® from American Express , coverage kicks in after you’ve been delayed by at least six hours for a covered reason.

Covered purchases may include food, toiletries, lodging, medication and other personal use items. You’ll be reimbursed for up to $500 on a covered trip and can make two claims within a 12-month period. Terms apply.

Rental car insurance

The Platinum Card® from American Express provides secondary rental car insurance . This means it’ll kick in after other claims — like those made to your personal insurance — have been paid. To activate coverage, you’ll need to decline the insurance offered by the rental car company.

AmEx will provide up to $75,000 due to damage or theft of the rental vehicle, but be aware that the policy doesn’t provide liability insurance.

It’ll also give you up to $1,000 per person (max of $2,000) for personal property lost in the incident and up to $5,000 for accidental injury. Finally, you’ll receive up to $300,000 for accidental death or dismemberment, though the rates will vary depending on the severity of your injuries.

This rental car insurance is valid worldwide with a few notable exceptions, including Australia, Italy and New Zealand. Terms apply.

Baggage coverage

Cardholders and their families are eligible for baggage insurance provided they’ve paid for the fare using The Platinum Card® from American Express . This benefit is only for lost baggage; delayed luggage is not protected.

Coverage limits vary depending on whether you’ve checked your bag or carried it on:

Checked bags: Up to $2,000 per person.

Carry-on: Up to $3,000 per person.

Note also that checked baggage is only covered when you’re actually traveling with a common carrier. Meanwhile, carry-on luggage is also covered when traveling to and from or waiting at the terminal.

There are also specific limits for high-risk items such as jewelry and electronic equipment. For these items, you’ll receive a maximum of $1,000 per person per trip. Terms apply.

» Learn more: Baggage insurance explained

Premium Global Assist

What else does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance cover? Although this last benefit isn’t technically a type of travel insurance, it’s worth including as it can offer help while you travel.

AmEx’s Premium Global Assist hotline is a 24/7 service that can assist you in various ways, such as helping you get a new passport, finding translation services and even arranging for emergency medical evacuation.

Although using Premium Global Assist is free, the services that you may end up using are not necessarily covered by AmEx.

There are exceptions to this — if you need repatriation of mortal remains, emergency medical evacuation or if a child under 16 is left without care, AmEx will provide aid at no additional cost. Terms apply.

To file a claim, you’ll need to contact your benefit administrator. The phone number and timeframe will vary according to the type of insurance you’re using:

Trip cancellation, interruption or delay insurance: Within 60 days, call 844-933-0648.

Baggage insurance: Within 30 days, call 800-228-6855 or online .

Rental car insurance: Within 30 days, call 800-338-1670 or online .

» Learn more: The guide to AmEx Platinum rental car benefits

If The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance doesn’t seem like it’ll be enough for your trip, or if its coverage doesn’t include features that you’d like to have, consider purchasing a separate travel insurance policy before you travel.

Several companies allow you to compare various policies for any vacation and modify inclusions as you shop.

» Learn more: How much is travel insurance?

The travel insurance offered by The Platinum Card® from American Express includes some pretty generous benefits for travelers, especially since it’s complimentary (the $695 annual fee notwithstanding). Terms apply.

If you want to take advantage of this insurance, pay for your trip using your AmEx card and double-check any other stated requirements before heading out to ensure coverage.

Amex Platinum Card overview

The Amex Platinum card is a high-end card that offers a substantial welcome bonus, exclusive travel perks and over $1,500 in statement credits, including an annual CLEAR Plus statement credit of up to $189 and Uber Cash. You can also take advantage of various extras such as an airline incidental fee statement credit and Membership Rewards® points .

The Amex Platinum card is perfect for individuals willing to invest in a higher annual fee of $695 in return for a wide range of rewards and exceptional benefits. While there are many travel rewards cards , none provide as many travel benefits as the Amex Platinum card.

What is the Amex Platinum CLEAR Plus credit?

With the American Express Platinum card’s CLEAR Plus credit, you will receive an annual statement credit of $189, which completely covers the cost of a membership for an entire year.

Since the credit renews annually, you’ll enjoy a complimentary CLEAR ® Plus membership each year, as long as you use the card to pay for the CLEAR membership enrollment fee (subject to auto-renewal).

About CLEAR Plus

CLEAR is a membership program that offers the convenience of expedited screening at airports, event venues, stadiums and other locations.

CLEAR Plus, also known as “CLEAR,” uses biometric information, such as fingerprints and/or iris scans, to verify members’ identity and bypass the security lines at U.S. airports and venues nationwide.

Although TSA security is still required, CLEAR allows passengers to bypass the step of presenting an ID and instead have their identification verified at a convenient kiosk. Once verified, a CLEAR representative will escort you to the front of the security line.

You can pair CLEAR with TSA PreCheck® to get through airport security even faster. If you have PreCheck you’ll go to the PreCheck screening lane instead of the standard screening. This means shorter lines and you don’t have to remove your shoes or take your laptop out of your carry-on bag. The Amex Platinum Card also offers an application fee statement credit of up to $100 for a Global Entry fee application credit or a statement credit of up to $85 every 4.5 years after you apply for a five-year membership for TSA PreCheck®.

Which credit cards offer trusted traveler credits? Here’s a guide to the best credit cards for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck

How does the Amex Platinum CLEAR Plus credit work?

To be eligible for the up to $189 statement credit for a CLEAR Plus membership, you must apply for CLEAR Plus online, pay the $189 membership fee using your qualifying Amex Platinum card and complete your enrollment at an airport kiosk.

After the payment is processed, you can expect to receive your statement credit within a few days. However, please note that American Express has mentioned it may take up to 6-8 weeks in some cases.

How to use your Amex Platinum CLEAR Plus credit

Using your Amex Platinum CLEAR Plus statement credit is quite simple.

To get started, you’ll need to apply for CLEAR ® Plus . Applicants must be at least 18 years old and the online application process can be completed in just a few minutes.

After completing the application, you must use your Amex Platinum card to qualify for the credit.

After completing enrollment and payment, you can easily finalize enrolling in CLEAR Plus by visiting any CLEAR airport location during your next flight. No appointment is necessary, but remember to bring your government-issued I.D..

During the final enrollment process, a CLEAR representative will kindly assist you by scanning your face, logging your fingerprint and requesting a copy of your boarding pass. The process only takes a few minutes of your time, so there’s no need to arrive excessively early for your flight just to complete your CLEAR enrollment.

Maximizing your CLEAR Plus credit: Get multiple memberships with your CLEAR benefit

The regular cost for a CLEAR Plus membership is $189 per year. Nevertheless, there are strategies to maximize your CLEAR Plus credit and get a reduced rate on a CLEAR Plus membership.

To begin, every person 18 or older must have their own CLEAR Plus membership if they want to enjoy expedited screening through CLEAR. Children under 18 are not required to have their own CLEAR Plus membership. Instead, they are automatically covered under their parent’s CLEAR Plus membership.

Since your Amex Platinum card only gives you one CLEAR Plus credit per year, here are some other ways to get a complimentary or discounted CLEAR Plus membership.

  • Annually, Delta SkyMiles Diamond Medallion® members receive a complimentary CLEAR Plus membership.
  • Annually, United MileagePlus Premier 1K members receive a complimentary CLEAR Plus membership.
  • Delta SkyMiles Platinum, Gold and Silver Medallion members and those who possess a co-branded Delta SkyMiles Credit Card can purchase a discounted CLEAR Plus membership for $149.
  • United MileagePlus Platinum, Gold and Silver Premier members and those who have a co-branded United MileagePlus Credit Card can get a discounted CLEAR Plus membership for $149.
  • Members of the Delta SkyMiles or United MileagePlus loyalty programs receive a $179 annual discount on CLEAR Plus membership.
  • Active duty military personnel and veterans can enjoy a CLEAR Plus membership for $99 annually.

Additional Amex Platinum benefits worth noting for your next trip

Marriott and hilton elite status.

As one of the best travel rewards cards , the Amex Platinum card allows you to obtain mid-tier elite hotel status with two of the biggest hotel chains in the world just for keeping your card.

The Platinum Card provides a range of travel perks, including Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status (upon enrollment). This elite status may include perks such as bonus points, upgrades and complimentary breakfast when staying at Hilton and Marriott hotels.

Up to $100 statement credit for enrolling in Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

In addition to CLEAR Plus, most passengers enroll in TSA PreCheck to get the best possible expedited screening at the airport. With this combo, you can quickly go to the front of the TSA line and avoid a long security queue.

In addition to the annual up to $189 CLEAR Plus statement credit that comes with the Amex Platinum card, cardholders may also get either a credit for Global Entry ($100) every four years or a credit for TSA PreCheck ($85) every 4.5 years (for a 5-year TSA PreCheck plan only).

Note that you receive TSA PreCheck automatically when enrolling in Global Entry, so for most people it’s best to register for Global Entry and take advantage of a seamless screening process next time you’re at the airport.

Access to Airport Lounges

Worldwide lounge access is not limited to flying a specific airline or purchasing a business or first-class ticket. With your Amex Platinum card, you can access over 1,400 lounge properties in 140 countries worldwide. This includes the extensive network of Priority Pass lounges (enrollment required) and access to Amex’s swanky Centurion Lounges , along with the Delta Sky Clubs (available when flying Delta on the same day).

Travel protections

If any issues arise during your travels, rest assured that Amex Platinum cardmembers are provided with comprehensive travel protections.

If your trip is delayed for over six hours due to a covered reason, you may be eligible for reimbursement of up to $500 per covered trip, with up to two claims per consecutive 12-month period¹. Even worse, if your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason, you may be able to get up to $10,000 back per covered trip and $20,000 back per card every 12 months².

Editor's Note

When you think of premium cards, The Platinum Card® from American Express is probably one that comes to mind first. And while the card's $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ) is certainly eye-watering, it comes with plenty of perks to make the value well worth the cost to cardholders.

One of these perks is the $300 Equinox credit. American Express Platinum cardmembers receive an Equinox statement credit of up to $300 per calendar year. Enrollment is required and subject to auto-renewal. Terms apply. Here's how it works and how to use it.

What is the Amex Platinum Equinox credit?

Equinox is a luxury fitness club with hundreds of locations in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. You'll find them mostly in major cities, but Equinox is headquartered in New York City. Accordingly, there are 41 locations in New York City alone.

With the Amex Platinum , you'll get an annual up to $300 statement credit with Equinox. This benefit is one per Platinum account, meaning that even if you have authorized users, you'll still only get one credit.

american express platinum travel number

If you don't live near an Equinox (or aren't interested in paying a premium for your gym), it's important to note that the $300 credit can also apply to the Equinox+ app. According to Amex, here's everything eligible for reimbursement with the Amex Platinum Equinox credit:

  • Equinox Single Club Access membership fees
  • Equinox Regional Access membership fees
  • Equinox All-Access membership fees
  • Equinox Destination membership fees
  • E by Equinox membership fees
  • Equinox+ app membership fees

How to use the Amex Platinum Equinox credit

Whether you're already an Equinox member or a first-timer, you'll follow the same process to use the Amex Platinum Equinox credit.

First, visit platinum.equinox.com to enroll in the benefit. Existing members will log in with their Equinox account, while new members will be prompted to select an eligible plan. You can choose either the in-person experience (gym membership) or the digital experience (Equinox+ app).

The table below breaks down the cost of each membership and service. While the membership cost could vary if you join in person, the all-access and destination memberships seem pretty standard across the board when joining online.

After activating the benefit, you must charge your Equinox or Equinox+ fees to your Platinum Card. You'll usually receive your statement credit within a few days but it can take up to eight weeks.

You'll get access to an extensive portfolio of classes from Equinox and its many brands, including SoulCycle, Pure Yoga, Precision Run, HeadStrong, Rumble, TB12 and Solidcore. 3 dream trips you can take with 100,000 Amex Membership Rewards Points

Chris Butsch

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Enrollment may be required for select American Express benefits and offers. Visit  americanexpress.com  to learn more.

Let’s say you recently applied for one of the most legendary cards on the market— the Platinum Card by American Express —and scored a hefty, six-figure welcome bonus.

As a well-informed credit card aficionado, you know that those American Express Membership Rewards Points are worth a measly 0.6 cents per point if you opt for a cash-back redemption, but can be worth a lot more if saved toward your next vacation. But where should you go?

Amex has so many transfer partners that it can be genuinely tricky to a) consider which partners will maximize the value of your points and b) plan out your next adventure from there. That’s why Fortune Recommends decided to do the hard work for you. From petting wombats outside Sydney to neon-soaked tours of Tokyo, here are three dream trips you can take with 100,000 Membership Rewards Points.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

1. Order life-changing ramen in Tokyo

american express platinum travel number

If you’ve read our guide on the best redemption options for Membership Rewards, you’ll know that your best option—by far—is to transfer your points to an airline or hotel loyalty program.

Amex has 21 transfer partners as of this writing, including 18 airlines and three hotel chains (complete list below). Unless otherwise stated, you can transfer 1,000 Membership Rewards Points (MRP) in exchange for 1,000 partner points, meaning a 1:1 transfer rate.

Airline partners

  • AeroMexico (1,000 MRP to 1,600 AeroMexico Rewards Points)
  • AIR FRANCE KLM
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • HawaiianMiles
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (250 MRP to 200 TrueBlue points)
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer (500 MRP to 500 Qantas Points)
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Hotel partners

  • Choice Privileges
  • Hilton Honors (1,000 MRP to 2,000 Hilton Honors Points)
  • Marriott Bonvoy

Now, how does this chart help you order comfortingly hot, gloriously authentic ramen in Tokyo?

Well, the trick to redeeming Membership Rewards Points is to know which partner has the most valuable points. Japan’s largest airline ANA, for example, has points that can sometimes be worth well over 2 cents per point (CPP) each. That means a flight from JFK to Tokyo—which would normally cost you well over $800—may cost you as little as 40,000 ANA Mileage Club Miles round trip . See the example from my own research below:

american express platinum travel number

That means if you have 100,000 Membership Rewards points at your disposal–and you’re flexible on dates–you and a companion could fly all the way around the world with 20,000 Membership Rewards points to spare.

From there, you can take a Mt. Fuji tour by day…

american express platinum travel number

… and explore the world’s largest city by night, sipping tonkotsu broth before you embark on your Winter Illumination Tour.

american express platinum travel number

Of course, 100,000 Membership Rewards Points won’t cover 100% of your expenses the entire time you’re in Tokyo—but speaking from firsthand experience, getting to Tokyo is by far the most expensive part. Once you’re there, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that an authentic bowl of ramen costs around ¥1200 or roughly $7.60.

Oh, and if you’re looking to earn a generous rate of 4X Membership Rewards Points per dollar spent as you satisfy your inner foodie, remember to bring your American Express Gold Card for its dining rewards.

American Express® Gold Card

  • 4x Earn 4X Membership Rewards® Points at restaurants (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.)
  • 4x Earn 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1x).
  • 3x Earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com booked directly with the airline or on amextravel.com.
  • 1x Earn 1X points on all other eligible purchases
  • High rewards at U.S. supermarkets, dining in and dining out.
  • Up to $120 a year in credits for eligible dining ($10 each month).
  • Up to $120 a year in Uber Cash ($10 each month), good for Uber rides or Uber Eats.
  • The $250 annual fee might be unpalatable to some.
  • The dining credits and Uber Cash credits are doled out monthly, in $10 increments.
  • Outside of dining, U.S. supermarkets and airfare, the card’s earnings are plain vanilla.
  • Travel benefits including car rental insurance, trip cancellation/interruption and travel delay protection

All that being said, if you’d prefer to explore a sprawling, adventure-rich metropolis closer to home, why not spend your hard-earned MRP in the Big Apple? Here’s how.

2. Explore NYC, starting five blocks from Central Park

american express platinum travel number

With New York being as expensive as it is, you might already be wondering: how far can 100,000 MRP really take you once you’re there?

Turns out, it can get you within shouting distance of Central Park—and you won’t have to live like the cast of Rent, either.

Thanks to a 1,000-to-2,000 transfer ratio, your 100,000 Membership Rewards Points can instantly become 200,000 Hilton Honors points. If you can save a mere 500 more Membership Rewards Points/1,000 Hilton Honors points, you’ll have exactly enough in the bank to book a three-night stay at the New York Hilton Midtown based on what my research turned up.

Among the seemingly billions of hotel options in New York, what makes the New York Hilton Midtown special?

Well, not only is it insanely good value for New York lodging—it’s also within a roughly 10-minute walk of Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

That means you and your companion can follow in the footsteps of Carrie Bradshaw, Joey Tribbiani and Buddy the Elf without ever having to hail a cab. And while a three-nighter in a New York Hilton will quickly wipe out the stash of Membership Rewards you’re working with in this example, you don’t have to pay another penny to enjoy the natural splendor of Central Park in autumn.

Now, maybe you’re thinking Tokyo and New York are fine—but you want to spend your 100,000 Membership Rewards Points on something you feel is truly unique and special. Something you’ve never done before. Something you can tell your friends about and they’ll go you did WHAT?

If so, allow me to introduce you to the mighty Australian wombat.

3. See the opera in Sydney and maybe pet a wombat

Beyond ANA and Hilton, another Amex partner with favorable transfer ratios is Australia’s own Qantas Airways Limited.

After a quick search, I found a flight option from San Francisco to Sydney for $1,152 or 41,900 Miles plus $99 cash. That means 41,900 Miles covered $1,053 of the fare, or provided over 2.5 CPP each.

Now, to set expectations, that’s 41,900 Miles one-way—so you’ll likely have to pay something out of pocket to fly both you and a companion “down under,” as well as cover lodging.

But 100,000 Membership Rewards points (transferred 1:1 to Qantas) will still foot a massive chunk of the bill, and for further consideration, look who will be waiting for you:

Yes, in addition to ‘roos and snakes, Australia is home to the adorable, friendly wombat. You can take a day tour from Sydney to meet both kangaroos and wombats up close before enjoying a lunch that I’d guess must involve some degree of vegemite.

Then, in the evening, why not a twilight cruise through Sydney harbor?

Yes, I confess again that 100,000 Membership Rewards Points won’t get you and your plus-one all the way to Australia and back, nor will it fully cover lodging while you’re there. But I wanted to highlight this option nonetheless to show just how much value Qantas is willing to give you for your Membership Rewards Points—and point out that a wombat-filled Aussie adventure could be well within your financial reach.

The takeaway

Amex’s long list of transfer partners is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it gives you tons of options. But on the other hand, it gives you tons of options , which can make choosing and planning the perfect trip rather tricky.

Hopefully one day AI will help us spend our credit card rewards like a robot travel agent, running endless calculations to find the ideal redemption path. But until then, it’s a more manual process.

At least it’s a massively rewarding one, with wombats, cherry blossoms and $1 New York slices awaiting our arrival.
