Having lived in Ouray for over 10 years, the avid nature enthusiast is passionate about sharing the love for the city, known for its pristine natural beauty and deep heritage. The recently renovated Western hotel in Ouray built circa 1891 is “contemporary while still having the feel of the Wild West . The Saloon has a pre-Prohibition art nouveau-style back bar” and the in-house restaurant offers “farm-to-table Southwestern-style fare.” You don’t want to miss its “Grotto Spa hot soaking pool, cold plunge, and sauna.” And at “ Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa & Lodgings , the former home of the Native Ute tribal leader and town namesake Chief Ouray, they offer relaxing natural mineral spring soaks and a rock vapor cave known for its healing subterranean steam.”

St. Elmo is home to the subterranean restaurant “ Bon Ton , the original residence and boarding house of Mrs. Kittie Heit, who housed and fed the local miners.” Built in 1889, this spot now serves “delicious Northern Italian food—a tribute to the many Northern Italians who were the first miners in Ouray, bringing hardnecked garlic and Italian dandelion, both of which have naturalized to the area.” Maggie’s Kitchen serves “delicious burgers with meat sourced from local ranches, salads, sandwiches, and hand-cut fries.” And at Brick House 737 you’ll find “local farm-to-table dishes and unique cocktails.” And Ouray Brewery makes excellent “hand-crafted beers, soups, sandwiches, and salads.”

Mr. Grumpy Pants Brewing (formerly Ourayle House Brewery) is “conveniently located next to Maggie’s Kitchen for your combined drinking and eating pleasures with great town and mountain views. Sauvage Spectrum Wine Lounge offers local wines by the glass. And Gray Tavern specializes in making its own beer , for a noteworthy drinking experience.”

Humble Mountain has “unique handmade local items—everything from jewelry to furniture.” Columbine Mineral Shop is “a purveyor of rock and gem specimens.” Gator Emporium offers a plethora of handmade gifts, mineral and animal specimens, and beads, and The Shaggy Coo has “unique Colorado-made, Western-style jewelry, clothing, and home decor.”

The Ouray Alchemist Museum “is an essential, with locally sourced alchemy and apothecary items, including medicines from a bygone era.” Visit Ouray Hot Springs or Box Cañon Falls Park & Nature Center , a “hiking trail with a tunnel and amazing waterfall.” And at the Baby Bathtubs Trail hike, which can be done through Basecamp Ouray , there are “bathtub-shaped pools carved out of stone with magical views.”

Manhattanhenge Is Happening Tonight — Where and When to See It

Manhattan will turn even more magical this evening as a twice-per-summer solar spectacular brings a dazzling glow to the concrete jungle. It’s Manhattanhenge — the Big Apple’s take on Stonehenge — a string of evenings when the sun sets in perfect alignment with the island’s street grid. The striking display draws thousands of spectators each summer.

With clear, sunny skies, tonight’s Manhattanhenge forecast couldn’t be better. Here’s where to look and when to watch the first Manhattanhenge showing of the season.

 Where to see Manhattanhenge

You can’t catch Manhattanhenge just anywhere, hence the name. Since the sun sets in the west, behind North Jersey, it’s best to watch from the eastern side of the island (but not too far east; make sure New Jersey is still visible.)

According to the American Museum of Natural History , the best thoroughfares to enjoy Manhattanhenge include 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street, and 57th Street. The Tudor City Overpass near the United Nations headquarters is a popular spot. For beyond-Manhattan viewing, try Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City, according to NYC Parks .   

When to see Manhattanhenge in 2024

The moment of Manhattanhenge — where the bright sun perfectly aligns between the city’s concrete bookends — only lasts a few minutes. Fortunately, it’s not a one-night-only event. The phenomenon occurs over a string of two evenings, twice each summer.

Tonight’s event is the kick-off, with Manhattanhenge striking at 8:13 p.m. ET. This is “half sun” Manhattanhenge; at the moment of city-grid alignment, half of the sun’s orb is above the horizon and half is below. Wednesday, May 29, will be “full sun” Manhattanhenge at 8:12 p.m. ET. During this time, the entirety of the sun’s sphere will shimmer above the horizon.

Manhattanhenge will occur again July 13 at 8:21 p.m., and again July 12 at 8:20 p.m. ET, according to ABC 7 — but we recommend taking advantage of this week’s spectacle given the perfect, clear-sky forecast.

Singing at edge of park on west side of Sprogels Run. Another individual singing near parking lot.

Eastern phoebe, great crested flycatcher.

Calling from multiple locations.

Red-eyed Vireo

Singing rapid abbreviated song.

Tufted Titmouse

Blue-gray gnatcatcher, house wren (northern), european starling, gray catbird, wood thrush.

Flew by me so close I could feel the wind from their wing beats. Not sure if M chasing F or both acting territorial. One individual then began singing rapidly and calling occasionally from a low area in the shrubs not far off trail. Later observed an individual pulling at dead pieces of grass along edge of creek.

American Robin

Observed the nest being built earlier this spring. No adults or nestlings seen or heard nearby.

Baltimore Oriole

Brown-headed cowbird, common grackle, common yellowthroat, northern cardinal.

Family group of fledglings and adults. Fledglings are brownish with stubby tails.

Exotic species

Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.

Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).

Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.

Escapee : Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.

Check out who is performing at Presque Isle's Sunset Music Series this summer

The UPMC Sunset Music Series at Presque Isle State Park will get underway June 19.

The free concert series, which is organized by the Presque Isle Partnership, will take place on six Wednesdays starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending around sunset on the peninsula's Beach 11.

What else will be there

In addition to two local bands, each concert will feature food trucks selling various items, ice cream available for purchase, hula-hoop playshops, and extended swimming hours.

How to get there

For those without access to a vehicle, the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority's Route 33 Presque Isle Express will be running free bus service on Wednesdays and Saturdays to and from Presque Isle with stops that include Beach 11, the West Erie Plaza and downtown Erie.

Good to know

Beach 11 is a smoke-free beach and alcohol is prohibited there as well as at the rest of Presque Isle State Park. Pets are welcome at the park and the concerts. However, pets must be leashed and kept near the tree line at the beach.
