What is the ATP Challenger Tour?

atp challenger tour tv

It’s the launchpad of men’s professional tennis and it’s serving up more events than ever, not to mention a record amount of prize money. Let’s take a deeper look at what’s going on with the ATP Challenger Tour.

More events. More prize money. More opportunity. Welcome to the new ATP Challenger Tour.

Considered the foremost minor leagues of men’s professional tennis , the Challenger Tour is teeming with potential, and this year, it’s primed for some truly game-changing enhancements. But before we dip into all of the exciting upgrades to the 2023 season of the ATP Challenger Tour , let’s first have a look at the story behind this pipeline for the rising stars of the men’s pro game.

Get on our list for weekly sports business, industry trends, interviews, and more.

The ATP Challenger Tour Explained

The Challenger Tour is a professional circuit that essentially serves as a feeder system for the proper ATP Tour. Launched in 1978 with 18 events in a limited number of locations, today’s tour has grown to more than 180 events in 40 different countries. Events are categorized, in descending order of prestige, as Challenger 125, Challenger 110, Challenger 75, and Challenger 50. This year will also include three elite “Challenger 175” events.

It’s a true stepping stone — a place where some of tennis’ top earners like Novak Djokovic , Rafael Nadal , and the now-retired Roger Federer have spent time honing their craft before making the leap to the big leagues.

And just like it was then, today’s tour is loaded with top-notch tennis from players with something to prove. Take 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz as an example. The 2022 US Open Champion made his Challenger Tour debut at 15 years old, winning his first title on the circuit at 17. The young Spaniard went on to win four Challenger titles before making the leap to the ATP Tour.

Notable names currently on the tour to keep an eye out for include Constant Lestienne of France (40-17, 3 titles), Pedro Cachin of Argentina (38-10, 4 titles), and Quentin Halys of France (34-9, 2 titles).

What’s in Store for the ATP Challenger Tour

The upcoming 2023 installment of the ATP Challenger Tour is set to deliver a record number of events, multi-million dollar increases in prize money, and an optimized calendar.

The reforms come as a result of an in-depth review and strategy development, conducted by ATP’s new senior Challenger Tour team over the past eight months. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi called the upgrades “a critical step forward for the entire ecosystem.”

“The new plan increases earnings potential for players and improves the balance of tournament categories, surfaces, and regions,” he said. “It also puts a renewed focus on raising tournament standards. This is also just the beginning. Our team is committed to delivering further enhancements in the coming months and years.”

Let’s have a look at a few of the key changes coming up in the year ahead.

Getting Semi-pro Tennis Players Paid

The ATP Challenger Tour is out to prove that fledgling tennis pros truly can pay the bills.

Among the many reforms coming in 2023 are:

  • Raising the total prize pool by 60% — a grand total of $21.1 million , which is a $7.9 million increase over 2022.
  • Notable increases in the winner’s prize money share at Challenger 125 (upwards of $168,000 ), Challenger 100 ( $106,240 to $130,000 ), and Challenger 75 ( $53,120 to $80,000 ) tournaments.
  • The three Challenger 175 events will offer $220,000 to the winner.

In addition, round-by-round prize money distributions will improve earnings in the earlier rounds of events. Organizers believe the enhancements will help “create a more sustainable player pathway for more players competing on the Challenger Tour.”

“The health of the ATP Challenger Tour is critical for the future of our sport, and our in-depth review revealed significant opportunities to strengthen this pathway,” said Richard Glover, the ATP Challenger Tour’s Vice President. “ Whilst we are taking a long-term approach to growing the Challenger Tour, these changes will provide an immediate boost from 2023 onwards. We look forward to executing these reforms next season and building on this progress in the near future. There is more to come, so watch this space.”

And naturally, more money means more competition.

A Better, More Balanced Tennis Calendar

The 2023 Challenger Tour is set to deliver an all-time record of 195 events, up from 183 in 2022 — creating many more opportunities for players.

Improvements to the calendar will also see it more closely align with the ATP Tour, and deliver a better balance of tournaments in terms of both surface types and regions.

In addition, increases in the number of Challenger 100 and 125 events are expected to enhance player flow and mobility, giving players more opportunities to ascend the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

Also up for some changes is the number of categories in events. In the upcoming year, the ATP phases out the previous Challenger 90 and 110 categories, leaving only four core event classes, plus the extra-special Challenger 175.

So, what do all of these upgrades mean for the future of men’s tennis?

In the big picture, it means more promising paydays and a much better chance for players who struggle to make a living from the sport to compete and evolve their games.

Andy Murray plans to play ATP Challenger Tour in Bordeaux before Geneva Open - a week before French Open

Andy Murray is set to make his comeback from injury and plans to play at the Geneva Open after being handed a wild card; Scot has also signed up for Stuttgart & Surbiton; you can watch the ATP Stuttgart Open exclusively live on Sky Sports Tennis from June 10-16

Andy Murray will return from injury at next week's ATP Challenger Tour in Bordeaux before playing at the Geneva Open - live on Sky Sports Tennis - indicating he is planning on playing in the French Open the following week.

Murray, who is expected to retire at some point this season, has been sidelined since late March after damaging ankle ligaments in a third-round match against Tomas Machac at the Miami Open .

After the match Murray said he would be sidelined for "an extended period" after confirming he suffered a full rupture of his ATFL [anterior talofibular ligament] and near full thickness rupture of his CFL [calcaneofibular ligament].

Andy Murray highlights

"I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps," he said. "Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I'll be out for an extended period. But I'll be back with one hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right."

Murray opted not to have surgery but it had been feared the former world No 1 one may not be able to have his Wimbledon swansong.

However, it was announced that Murray has been given a wild card for the ATP tournament on clay in Geneva beginning on May 18 - live on Sky Sports Tennis - indicating he is planning on playing in the French Open the following week.

But, with the French Open only a fortnight away, the Scot has opted for more clay-court practice and will also play next week in the second-tier tournament in France.

Murray's last match on clay also came in Bordeaux a year ago, when he was heavily beaten by Stan Wawrinka before deciding not to play at Roland Garros.

Andy Murray celebrated his 29th birthday in 2016 by beating Novak Djokovic in the Rome Masters final with possibly his greatest match point ever

The Scot has not played at Roland Garros since 2020, which was his only appearance since his hip problems began three years previously.

While Wimbledon appears the most logical venue for Murray to call time on his glittering career, he is tempted at another tilt at an Olympic medal on the Parisian clay this summer.

Murray, who is playing with a metal hip, confirmed he is set to retire this summer, saying: "I'm likely not going to play past this summer.

"I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I'm bored of the question, to be honest.

"I'm not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But, yes, I don't plan on playing much past this summer."

Murray has his sights set on a final appearance in the year's second Grand Slam, where he will also enter the doubles alongside Davis Cup team-mate Dan Evans.

Of his 46 career singles titles, only three have come on clay. Two of those have been Masters, though, with wins in Madrid (2015) and Rome (2016).

He has also been a French Open finalist but lost out in 2016 to Djokovic.

Grass & Wimbledon

Andy Murray kisses the trophy after beating Serbia's Novak Djokovic. The Wimbledon victory cemented Murray's place as one of Britain's sporting greats, and he followed it up three years later with a second title. Issue date: Monday June 26, 2023.

Murray has signed up to defend his title at the Surbiton Trophy from June for his first grass-court tournament, although the tournament coincides with the second week of the French Open, indicating he is not anticipating a long stay in Paris.

The Scot will then head to the Boss Open in Stuttgart from June 10-16 - live on Sky Sports Tennis rather than defending his Challenger title in Nottingham before heading to Queen's Club .

Sky Sports Tennis' Annabel Croft said: "It's great news. None of us really knew where he was going to play, and I'm sure he doesn't quite know where his body's going to be at.

"It was such a massive setback after Miami, with that ankle turn in that match, when he was just starting to really ramp up the tennis and looked like he was playing some of his better tennis again.

"I don't think it surprises me that he's entered all of that [Geneva, Roland Garros, Stuttgart]. He'll want to play a lot of tennis. As many matches as possible."

Andy Murray writes message on camera

He will then return to the home of arguably his greatest memories in the sport when he steps out on the hallowed turf at the All England Club for what will be the last time.

He will arrive on Centre Court in what is bound to be an emotional moment for the 2013 and 2016 champion.

"On grass, he can always be a problem for any player. He's so experienced, a two-time Wimbledon champion, and the options that he has in his box of tricks are always at his disposal," Croft continued.

"He can still make life very, very difficult for so many opponents, so let's hope his body is going to get back and he can give it a really good run during the summer."

Paris Olympics?

Sir Andy Murray will be competing at his fourth Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.

The Brit will then be tempted by another crack at the Olympics in Paris, which could be his final appearance as a professional player, with his best chance likely to be in doubles.

He is the only tennis player to have won back-to-back singles gold medals, in London and Rio.

The Olympic Games in Paris are also scheduled to get under way on July 24, with direct entry handed to the top 56 of the rankings on June 10.

Huge changes to 2025 grass court season as WTA Tour heads to Queen’s Club

The rumours have been swirling for weeks over huge changes to the grass court season and now Britain’s LTA have confirmed the news that women’s event will be staged at The Queen’s Club.

The governing body of tennis in Britain has cited a desire to raise the profile of women’s tennis and promote it to more people for the changes, which will see the Birmingham and Eastbourne tournaments reduced in status.

The new women’s event, which will take place in the week following the French Open, means a tour level women’s tournament is coming to London for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Edgbaston Priory club in Birmingham, which has staged a WTA Tour event since 1982, will now host a combined men’s and women’s second-tier tournament in the second week of the French Open.

The joint men’s and women’s event in Nottingham will move to the same week as the men’s tournament at Queen’s, with the combined event in Eastbourne the week prior to Wimbledon now at the lowest 250 level for both tours.

The LTA revealed last month that a sticking point was concerns from the ATP over the impact on its event, second only in status to Wimbledon during the British grass swing, of a women’s tournament the previous week.

READ MORE:   Is women’s tennis heading to Queen’s? All you need to know about controversial grass season plans

And Chris Pollard, the LTA’s director of major events and digital, admitted the arrangement could end up only being for a year if the male players are unhappy.

“We have absolute confidence that we can stage a two-week event at the Queen’s Club,” he said.

“Obviously the Championships at Wimbledon prove that grass can withstand two weeks of tennis. We’ve got independent data that really provides a lot of evidence that the men’s week will not suffer in any way, shape or form.

“We’ve had many discussions with both tours in respect of that. (The ATP) have given the green light for the tournament to take place in 2025 and we continue to have an ongoing dialogue with them in respect of the success of the 2025 tournament.

“They would like to consider what happens after 2025 but we remain in very close dialogue with them on that point and remain very confident that it will be a permanent change.”

Disparities in prize money levels between the tours mean the men will earn more money at their tournament, while Pollard stressed the LTA is committed to both events being on free-to-air TV.

Meanwhile, the second-tier event at Surbiton that has kicked off the grass-court season will be scrapped from next year but Ilkley will continue to host a men’s and women’s tournament.

The move to stage a women’s tournament at The Queen’s Club may be seen as a boost for the grass court season in Britain, but there will be disappointment for some of the second-tier grass court tournaments following this announcement.
