australia tours of west indies

____________

"All the members, players and match officials will be re-tested today and a decision on when the match will be replayed will be made at a later date once the test results are known. They will remain in isolation in their hotel rooms until their PCR-Test results are returned" is the latest from Cricket West Indies. Quite unfortunate and sad, we have to exit the comm box without a ball being bowled due to the unexpected turn of events in the last 30 minutes. Keep checking this space for all the latest and until next time, we - Raju Peethala, Nikhil Jadhav, Kumar Abhisekh Das along with our scorer Harish - bid goodbye on a sombre note. Stay safe and take great care of yourself. See you soon!!

Alright, here's an official update from Cricket West Indies: " The second ODI between West Indies and Australia has been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test result from a non-playing member of the West Indies staff. This decision was taken after the toss at Kensington Oval once the result was known. The established COVID-19 protocols stipulate that all members of both teams and match officials will return immediately to the team hotel and will be re-tested later today. ."

15:00 Local, 05:00 am Canberra time: Not the ideal news to wake up to, but what an unfortunate turn of events. The toss was done, teams out and just as we were about to see players stride out of the dressing rooms, Samuel Badree on commentary mentioned that "it's delayed due to an operational issue" but none saw this coming. It's highly likely that the final ODI might get cancelled and remember, Australia are set to arrive in Dhaka on 29th this month for a five-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Ian Bishop, part of the host broadcast team, has just tweeted this: "Unfortunate. Its the risk taken in these testing times. Hope the person is not to. Adversely affected."

Pradeep Mehra : There should be more strict Covid protocols, we cannot afford more suspensions of matches, hope all the team players are healthy

14:42 local - BREAKING: Uh-oh! We didn't see this coming. The second ODI has been suspended. Apparently there's a positive Covid-19 case which caused the trouble and we are hearing that both teams, including members and support staff, will go into isolation with immediate effect.

14:31 local: We are hearing that there is a bit of a delay due to operational issues . Should be a quick one. More updates as and when we have it....

Pitch report: Expect about 30 percent chance of rain. We move three pitches to the West and that will impact the boundaries, square boundaries hitting into the wind and one side it will be easier. It's brown (the surface) in color and still very dry. The grass covering is quite patchy, bowlers will have a significant advantage and we expect this will provide a lot of entertainment," reckons Daren Ganga.

Kieron Pollard: It's just a matter of trying to fix what went wrong and hopefully we can come in and give a better account of ourselves. It's a game of cricket and we have lots of discussions and not too much of a disappointment two days on. One change. Hetmyer misses out and Hope comes in and hopefully he continue the form he's in for the last 18 months.

Alex Carey: We gonna bat again today, looks a similar track to the first one. Nice to get off to a good start, obviously we move on pretty quickly and we know West Indies are gonna comeback strong. We have got one change and nice opportunity for Riley to come in fresh and we are all excited as he is making his debut. Wes (Agar) is out.

One change for both teams: For West Indies, Shai Hope is all set to play his first white-ball game since March 2021. He replaces Shimron Hetmyer who, we assume, has been rested. The visitors, though, have another debutant in store today. The fiery Riley Meredith is all set to become Australia's 234th ODI cap, replacing Wes Agar who debuted in the first game.

West Indies (Playing XI): Evin Lewis, Shai Hope(w), Darren Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard(c), Jason Holder, Hayden Walsh, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein

Australia (Playing XI): Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey(w/c), Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Riley Meredith, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Australia have won the toss and have opted to bat

13:30 local, 03:30 am Canberra time: Hello and welcome to the penultimate game of Australia's tour of West Indies. It's the second ODI and the scoreline of white-ball games thus far read 4-2 in favour of the Windies. There's also that crucial Super League points at stake. It's all to play for here at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados as we expect a decent, few interruptions throughout the course of the game, thanks to the dodgy weather. There's still some time before the much-anticipated toss, so why not indulge in the wonderfully-compiled preview by our very own Bharat Sundaresan. And yes, the HaveYourSay section is up and running, fire away....

Preview by Bharat Sundaresan It might have been a relatively insignificant moment in the overall narrative of Australia's tour of the Caribbean so far. But when Mitchell Starc roared in delight, and a tinge of angst, while pumping his fists, after bowling the fifth ball of the final over of the fourth T20I, it didn't just mean that the visitors had their first win of the series. It was also the premier left-arm pacer letting out all the steam that had built up during a forgettable home summer and carrier on into the early part of the West Indies tour. Not to forget the fact that he had started to feel like himself again. Starc was his trademark menacing self when the touring party moved from St Lucia to Barbados for the ODI leg of the trip. And as he ripped out the home team's top order before polishing off the tail, you could see that both the strike bowler and his team seemed a lot more settled in their own skin. Starc's five-wicket haul may have ensured a rather quick victory for the Aussies. Their performance in the opening ODI, save the late order collapse courtesy their nemesis Hayden Walsh Jr, was also a sign of just how comfortable they are playing the 50-over version as compared to the shortest format in international cricket. In stark contrast, Australia's first match at the Kensington Oval in five years also exposed just how uncomfortable the West Indians can be in the 50-over format, especially when they have to play without their most prolific performer, Shai Hope. Yes, they didn't quite have the star quality of their T20I outfit, but the West Indians didn't look like the team who had dominated their opponents, who if anything had been beleaguered further with the loss of regular skipper Aaron Finch, in the earlier leg of the tour. Australia seemed to come to terms with the tempo of the match and the conditions better. That meant that they seemed hooked on to a better rhythm through major chunks of the contest led by stand-in captain Alex Carey. The South Australian steadied the innings with a classical rear-guard effort in the middle-overs and was allowed to do so as a result of Ashton Turner's muscle towards the latter half of their partnership. The West Indies on the other hand were never allowed to even get their run-chase out of neutral, forget pressing the foot on the accelerator thanks to the burst from Starc and Josh Hazlewood. And despite Kieron Pollard's high-octane half-century, the West Indians only lasted six more overs than the maximum quota they'd get in a T20I. Their approach pretty much told you the story of their collapse. That even the likes of Darren Bravo and Jason Mohammed, the two batsmen expected to play the Hope role, fell to extravagant attempts at playing a shot, was another tell-tale of how they simply didn't show up to play the ODI, quite literally. The second ODI as a result won't just be about the hosts trying to claw their way back into the series but also getting their ODI act together. As for the Aussies and Carey, who looks set to continue at the helm in the absence of Finch, it's about taking the lead from Starc and not taking their foot off the gas. When: Friday, July 23, 2021, 00:00 IST Where: West Indies v Australia, 2nd ODI, Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados What to expect: The only good part about the West Indies' poor performance with the bat was the match finishing well on time. It didn't look like it will after the multiple rain breaks during the Australian innings due to rain. The forecast for Thursday evening around Bridgetown is once again for clouds above and close to a 40 per cent chance of rain in the air. So expect a few interruptions. Team News: West Indies: The West Indians are still riddled with injuries and unless they look to bring in one of their two inexperienced seamers, Romario Shepherd or Anderson Phillip, they're likely to stick to their playing XI from the first match. Likely XI: Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Kieron Pollard (c), Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein, Hayden Walsh Jr, Sheldon Cottrell Australia: The same goes for Australia with Finch still unlikely to take the field. Having got the debut nerves out of the way, the onus will be on the likes of Josh Phillipe and Ben McDermott to make the most of their second chances while Wes Agar looks to build on his strong maiden performance. Likely XI: Josh Phillipe, Ben McDermott, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey (c/wk), Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Wes Agar, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Australia Squad: Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, Mitchell Marsh, Moises Henriques, Alex Carey(w/c), Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar, Josh Hazlewood, Daniel Christian, Jason Behrendorff, Andrew Tye, Mitchell Swepson, Wes Agar, Riley Meredith

West Indies Squad: Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Mohammed, Darren Bravo, Nicholas Pooran(w), Kieron Pollard(c), Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Hayden Walsh, Akeal Hosein, Sheldon Cottrell, Fabian Allen, Shai Hope, Anderson Phillip, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd

West Indies ODI & T20I Squads Revealed for Australia Tour

St. John’s, Antigua  – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Selection Panel has named both 15-man squads to play against Australia in three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is) from 2 to 13 February 2024.

The ODI squad features two debutants, Grenadian top order batsman Teddy Bishop and Guyanese wicketkeeper batsman, Tevin Imlach.

Bishop has impressed with the bat on assignments for the West Indies Academy during the recent CG United Super 50 Cup and Academy series against Emerging Ireland.  Imlach, who is currently in Australia with the test team, averages 30.1, having played 26 List A matches.

Justin Greaves, who has recently returned from a hamstring injury sustained in the CG United Super 50 Cup in November, gets a recall to the ODI team.  He was particularly impressive at the top of the order in that tournament, amassing a total of 403 runs in his 7 innings at an average of 80.59 for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes.

Hayden Walsh Jr. - 4th T20I - Australia

Also returning to the squad are Hayden Walsh Jr. and Kavem Hodge.  Walsh Jr. last played in the ODI format in July 2022, when the West Indies played India in the Caribbean. Hodge made his debut in June 2023 when he played in all three matches against the UAE in Daren Sammy’s first series as Head Coach.

Missing from the last ODI squad that won the series against England in December, are Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford, who have bothbeen given the opportunity to take up T20 franchise contracts during this period, along with Shimron Hetmyer and Yannic Cariah who also both miss out on selection.

In the T20I format, Alzarri Joseph, who was rested for the final two T20I’s against England comes back into the team to replace Matthew Forde.

Speaking about the squads to face Australia, CWI Lead Selector, the Most Honorable Desmond Haynes said:

“On the back of a series win against England, we are expecting our ODI team to be very competitive in Australia. We have some new inclusions, who have impressed over a significant period and a couple of returning players, who we think will have an impact. For the T20I series, this forms part of our crucial preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup where we are hosts. We are hoping to build on strong overall performances against India and England and to keep improving as we approach the major tournament.”

The white ball series will follow the upcoming test series between Australia and the West Indies, which begins on 17 January and concludes on 29 January.   Both teams will battle for crucial ICC World Test Championship points. West Indies have started their Test preparations with a training camp in Adelaide and a 3-Day practice match against a Cricket Australia XI which started on 10 January.

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET TOUR TO THE WEST INDIES - TOUR PROGRAM

** THIS TOUR IS NOW JUNE - JULY 2025 CLICK HERE FOR WEST INDIES 2025 **

When preparing an Australian Cricket Tour to the West Indies our fingers are always crossed to play in Antigua and Barbados, but what we want is rarely what we get. Australia last played Test Cricket in Antigua 2008 and Barbados 2012 so it is time we returned. If only we had an influence on fixturing!

There has always been correlation between where we play and how many people tour. If we don’t play in Cape Town, or Kolkata, or Galle, or Barbados for example then fewer people tour. #Fact

“Dear West Indies Cricket,

If you invite Australia to play test cricket in Antigua, Barbados, and St Lucia in 2023 you will see 1000+ Australians visit each island. If you invite Australia to play in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica, you won't.

We hope to see you in our thousands in 2023.

Australian Cricket Tours.”

Not knowing where we play until 6 months or less before the first ball doesn’t help, but we've created a 3-Test tour program to showcase our favourite Caribbean for you. Our tour is presented so you know what to expect when you choose to join us in the wonderful West Indies.

No matter where play, we want you to receive excellent value for your time with us and will do our best for you with the cricket fixture we are given.

Indian Premier League (IPL)  runs until the end of May 2023, so our program is focussed on touring the islands from June 1 – July 10 for 3 Test Matches. The first test in Dominica 2015 started on June 3 so we are maintaining the same match dates and the same starting island; St Maarten / St Martin (SXM), the world’s smallest shared land mass

Australian Cricket Tour To The West Indies 2023

Easy to reach with dozens of daily direct flights from USA to suit all airline frequent flyers, and plenty of flights for those that aren’t, we will be in this tiny half-French/half-Dutch hamlet from June 1.

Your 4-night SXM Tour starts on June 2 but you’re welcome to kick start one day early and get some early plane spotting done on famous Maho Beach. Even the most hardened plane-haters thrill to standing under inbound aircraft swooping as close as 10m above you.

With drinks included at our resort you may not want to leave, but we never go to SXM without cruising to our ever-favourite Prickly Pear on Anguilla. If you want a break from our included dinner, a night at the BBQ shacks of Grand Case is always good.

Jumping on a bongo bus to the Dutch Capital of Phillipsburg for incredibly affordable duty-free won’t disappoint nor will the vast promenade on Great Bay. 4 nights in SXM is never enough but leave we must for the first test in Antigua.

June 6 - 14

1st Test:  Antigua, June 8 - 12, 2023

Your flight to Antigua is included so you only need to get up on time and let our friendly SXM taxi driver Lorraine shuttle you to the airport in time for the short hop to St John’s.

The world’s coolest bus driver known to us, ‘Big Earl’ will drive us from VC Bird International Airport to the all-inclusive Starfish Jolly Beach Resort on the south west coast, close to English & Falmouth Harbours. Big Earl will drive us to/from Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium each day, so you don’t have to worry about that unless you sleep in after too much rum-punch at sunset after play.

Speaking of sunsets, the best in Antigua are seen from Shirley Heights where half the nation ascends on Sunday to celebrate the end of another week or the local will be a West Indies victory. Win or lose, we will go to the Heights anyway but if we have an extra day if the game ends early, we will sail to Barbuda.

Otherwise, on Day 6 we can see Barbuda in the distabce as we cruise on our catamaran adventure around the island. This great day trip is a perfect way to end 8 nights in Awesome Antigua, before doing it again in Beautiful Barbados.

June 14 - 22

2nd Test: Barbados,   June 16 - 21, 2023

Big Earl will take us back to the VC Bird for our included flight to the largest and arguably most popular island of the Eastern Caribbean. Rooster, a big cool Bajan, will meet us at Grantley Adams and deliver us safely to St Lawrence Gap on the south coast, the Caribbean’s most dynamic ‘strip’.

Hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, bars, resorts, clubs, street food, cafes, Dover Beach and most perfectly positioned Church in all of Christendom awaits you in this outstanding south coast village. With so many choices for post-play social intercourse, something you don’t have in Antigua, living ‘all-inclusive’ in St Lawrence would be wasted.

In years past we have stayed in 3 neighbouring hotels in ‘the Gap’, which doesn’t mean we will in 2023. Staying in hotels next door to each other is no different than being in opposing ‘wings’ in a massive resort, but it will come to availability.

While we work on that, Rooster will take us to and from famous Kensington Oval each day. We hope to have 5-days at ‘The Oval’ but if the game ends early we will take a leisurely drive around the island ticking the box on a few favourite rum shacks.

The day after play, we have an all-inclusive sunset sail along the west coast before lobbing over to vibrant St Vincent for 5 days in the Grenadines before out much-wanted 3 rd Test in St Lucia.

June 22 - 27

Rooster will drive us to Grantley Adams for the non-stop-hop to the new Argyle International Airport on St Vincent’s east coast. We last toured St Vincent in 2012 for 2 ODI’s at Arnos Vale, but 6 nights was not enough and left us longing to return. Now we can.

Our friends Kim and Earl offer an unique airport transfer by boat along the south coast to our beach front hotel for 5 nights in the pristine Grenadines. Spare days can be exploring the ‘city of arches’ or Fort St Charlotte, but a primary purpose for many visitors are Pirates of the Caribbean film locations.

One day we will rocket to the far south of this 32 island archipelago nation for an afternoon at Sparrow’s Beach Club on Union Island. Snorkelling, swimming, or simply sunning on the whitest of white sand beaches (as seen in the films), on which we have a BBQ seafood lunch.

Bottomless rum-punch for the ride home will make you thankful that tomorrow is a day spent on the beach before doing ‘Pirates’ again the following day, though this time to the north.

5 smooth nights later, we’ll be zipped back across the waters to Argyle for the 30 mins flight north to Castries and much wanted 3 rd Test at Beausejour.

June 27 – July 5

2nd Test:  St Lucia, June 29 - July 3, 2023

Landing in the better of St Lucia’s two international airports, when arriving into George Charles Airport the views of the capital, Castries, just 11km south of Darren Sammy Cricket Ground , from the right-hand side are spectacular.

We have 8 nights in a luscious all-inclusive resort on Reduit Beach on at very popular Rodney Bay. Only 4km from the cricket, we will shuttle you to and from the game making St Lucia as deservedly relaxing as possible.

On Day 6 a catamaran will pick us up on Reduit beach and sail to St Lucia’s postcard geographic wonders and national symbol, the Pitons. Stopping in the French village of Soufriere for ‘refreshment’, we lunch on Anse Chastanet and swim the afternoon away before another sunset sail home.

If the game ends early you can (as on any other island) tee-up on spectacular Sandals Country Club north of Rodney Bay. We will otherwise have an optional day trip through the island. If you are not joining us in St Kitts and flying home from St Lucia, you may fly from Hewanorra Airport in the far south.

The 65km drive from Rodney Bay is firstly at your expense, but secondly allow time to stop along the way. There is a lot more spectacular West Indian scenery and views to enjoy before you leave for what could be another 5 or more years!

July 5 - 10

One of our preferred ‘little’ islands to play Cricket, perfectly positioned between lovable St Maarten and awesome Antigua, any cricket scheduled here is a blessing. Warner Park is in the city (town!) of Basseterre is just 5km from our favoured resort, the only hotel on Frigate Bay, which is two bays on opposing sides of the isthmus. You won't arrive at the wrong one, as we you be transferred on arrival.

We live and survive and on the Caribbean side, on the ‘strip’, which is the epi-centre of St Kittitian entertainment. Beach bars, restaurants, grills, music, flame torches, and lots of sand is where we kick back after the Test Series for 4 nights, and a round island road and rail trip! The Eastern Caribbean’s only railway will be part of the journey to Brimstone Hill Fortress and the black sand beach of Dieppe.

It wouldn’t be an island trip without including a day on a catamaran also. We will sail south to the St Kitt’s stunning sister isle of Nevis for lunch before sailing north for sunset off Brimstone Hill.

We would love to play Test cricket here in 2023 (and always) and maybe we will be surprised, as we were with Dominica in 2012 and 2015. It’s a gorgeous little island where in 1995 we met the Australian Cricket Team. We were invited to their hotel manager’s rum-punch party and the rest, as we say, is why we are helping you enjoy Australian Cricket Tours to the West Indies and beyond today!

Waving goodbye from the islands, on July 10 we go to England for the Ashes! Are you coming?

Ultimate guide to the 2024 men's T20 World Cup

30t20-guide-main

Get all the key venue and broadcast details ahead of a historic men's T20 World Cup in the United States and Caribbean

When does it start?

The 2024 men's T20 World Cup begins on Saturday, June 1 (10.30am Sunday, June 2 AEST) with the oldest rivalry in international cricket – the United States and Canada. Before the Ashes were even thought of, these two nations played in the first ever international cricket match in 1844 with Canada emerging victorious by 23 runs in the three-day contest at a field in Staten Island, New York.

This year's match will take place in Dallas at Grand Prairie Stadium, a former baseball park that was converted to a purpose-built cricket venue for the inaugural Major League Cricket season in 2023. Australia – fresh off their remarkable triumph in last year's 50-over version – begin their quest for a second men's T20 World Cup crown against Oman in Barbados on June 5 (10.30am, June 6 AEST) before facing archrivals and defending champions England at the same venue on June 8 (3am, June 9 AEST).

Co-hosts West Indies face Papua New Guinea in the second match of the tournament, India kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5 (midnight, June 6 AEST) at New York's new pop-up cricket stadium, Pakistan open their tournament the following day against the US in Dallas, while trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand are one of the last teams to get underway on June 7 (9.30am, June 8 AEST) against Afghanistan in Guyana.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be contested by a record 20 nations, an expansion from 16 teams at the 2022 edition that was hosted by Australia. Canada and Uganda have qualified for the men's tournament for the first time, while the USA will also contest their maiden T20 World Cup by virtue of being co-host.

How can I watch?

All 55 matches will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video in Australia after the internet giant acquired the Aussie broadcast rights for all ICC events for 2024-27. There will be no free-to-air Australian broadcast of any men's or women's ICC events under the deal. You can read more about that here .

Amazon will also produce two on demand highlights packages for every match – a 10-minute version called Short Stuff and a 25-minute version called Great Length – as well as full match replays titled Full Delivery.

The time difference is a bit of a dog's breakfast for Australian viewers with matches stretching across a 13-hour window from a 12.30am start times to 10.30am start times on the east coast. Australia's tournament-opener against Oman begins at 10.30am AEST, while the first ball of the blockbuster second match against Ashes rivals England is at 3am AEST, which is a slightly tougher 1am on the west coast. Australia's remaining two Group B matches against Namibia and Scotland get underway at 10.30am AEST (8.30am AWST).

What's the tournament format?

The largest T20 World Cup in the tournament's history will again feature three stages – an initial group stage followed by the Super Eights and finals. The 20 teams have been split into four groups of five for the round-robin first stage of the tournament, with the top two teams to progress after each nation plays their other four group members. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a no result. In the event of a tie, a Super Over will decide the winner. Group A will play all their matches in the United States, along with the first six matches of Group D, with the remaining four split between St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Upon completion of the first group stage, the top two teams from each of the four groups will move into the Super Eight stage of the competition. Teams seeded first and second in their groups in the first round will retain that seeding in the next stage regardless of their final position on group table, provided they qualify for the Super Eight stage. England are seeded first in Group B followed by Australia in second, meaning the Aussies will go into Group 1 as B2 in the second round regardless of their position on the table. Should an unseeded team make it out of the group, they will take the seed of the team they knocked out. If there are two unseeded qualifiers, it will revert to ladder position. All Super Eight matches will take place in the Caribbean.

If – and it's a big if in a T20 tournament – there are no major upsets and all the seeded teams progress, Australia will play Sri Lanka, New Zealand and India in that order in their three Super Eight fixtures.

The two top teams from each group in the Super Eight will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago on June 26 and 27 respectively. The final will be held in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. Reserve days have been scheduled for both semi-finals and the final.

Australia team news

Australia announced their 15-player squad on May 1 and the big talking point was Steve Smith being left out of a World Cup campaign for the first time in a decade. Selectors also resisted the urge to whisk IPL sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk into the touring party for what would have been his T20 international debut.

Western Australia allrounders Ashton Agar and Cameron Green were the two surprise selections for the 2021 champions having not played a T20I in almost 18 months. Mitch Marsh has been confirmed as captain of an experienced and settled side that could see opener Travis Head replacing retired former skipper Aaron Finch as the only change from the XI that contested Australia's opening match of the previous T20 World Cup.

Death specialist Nathan Ellis earned selection as the fourth fast bowling option behind the big three of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, while Adam Zampa will head four spins options for the Aussies including Agar, Glenn Maxwell and Head. Veteran opener David Warner will finish his international career following the tournament, while Maxwell, Tim David, Marcus Stoinis and wicketkeeper-batters Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis provide the middle-order options.

What are the host venues?

The 2024 men's T20 World Cup will be the largest in the tournament's history with 20 teams playing 55 matches across nine cities. It is the first time USA will host matches at a T20 World Cup, with 16 first-round games split between Nassau County International Cricket Stadium (New York), Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium (Dallas) and Broward County Stadium (Lauderhill).

Lauderhill in Florida has hosted international cricket since 2010, including most recently in August last year when West Indies hosted India at the venue for two T20s. Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas was built for Major League Cricket and hosted 12 matches in the inaugural season in 2023. New York will feature a brand-new international cricket venue with a purpose-built 34,000-seat modular stadium constructed 50km east of downtown Manhattan specifically for the World Cup. Eight matches will be played at the venue during the first round of the tournament, including the India-Pakistan blockbuster on June 9 (12.30am, June 10 AEST). The pitches for the new stadium have been curated by Damian Hough and his Adelaide Oval ground staff team.

Six countries (Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines) will host matches in the Caribbean with Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad and Providence Stadium, Guyana the venues selected for the semi-finals and Kensington Oval, Barbados the final on June 29. The historic Sabina Park in Kingston won't host any matches during the tournament after the Jamaican government opted against bidding to host games.

Australia will play all their matches in the Caribbean, with the first two against Oman (10.30am, June 6 AEST) and England (3am, June 9 AEST) at Kensington Oval in Barbados. They'll then face Namibia (10.30am, June 12) at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Scotland (10.30am, June 16) at Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia. Should they qualify for the Super Eight stage they'll play their matches in Antigua, Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent and St Lucia.

Will there be warm-up fixtures?

There will, but the details are yet to be confirmed by the ICC. The Aussies are heading to Trinidad as their first port of call, where they'll have about a week to acclimatise, train and potentially play a practice match or two. Watch this space.

What does the winner get?

The ICC are yet to confirm the prizemoney to be carved up for the 2024 T20 World Cup. A cool US$5.6 million (that's A$8.5m) pot was on offer at the previous tournament hosted by Australia with all participating teams receiving something. England took home a hefty US$1.6m (A$2.5m) for winning the 2022 final at the MCG, while beaten finalists Pakistan received half of that.

Who's officiating?

The ICC announced a team of 26 match officials (20 umpires and six match referees) who will take charge during the first round of the ninth edition of the men's T20 World Cup. They will then select the umpires and referees for the Super Eight stage, semi-finals and final.

Australian umpires selected for the tournament are Rod Tucker and Paul Reiffel, who was the reserve umpire for the 2022 final between England and Pakistan at the MCG, while Cricket Australia Umpire of the Year, Sam Nogajski, will make his officiating debut at a senior men's ICC event. Aussie legend David Boon will again be part of the match referee panel.

The experienced group of umpires includes Kumar Dharmasena and Chris Gaffaney, who were appointed alongside Reiffel for the final of the previous T20 World Cup. Jayaraman Madanagopal, Allahudien Paleker, Rashid Riaz and Asif Yaqoob will also make their senior men's event debuts.

Umpires: Chris Brown, Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough, Adrian Holdstock, Richard Illingworth, Allahudien Paleker, Richard Kettleborough, Jayaraman Madanagopal, Nitin Menon, Sam Nogajski, Ahsan Raza, Rashid Riaz, Paul Reiffel, Langton Rusere, Shahid Saikat, Rodney Tucker, Alex Wharf, Joel Wilson, Asif Yaqoob   Match referees: David Boon, Jeff Crowe, Ranjan Madugalle, Andrew Pycroft, Richie Richardson, Javagal Srinath

Big names miss out as Australia reveal squad for T20 World Cup

A host of big names have missed selection as Australia announced their 15-player group for next month's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Veteran batter Steve Smith, young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk, experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Matt Short all miss the cut as the 2021 T20 World Cup champions sprung some surprises when revealing their squad for the four-week tournament in the West Indies and the USA.

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar wins a recall despite not having played a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Cameron Green join Glenn Maxwell in the final squad as all-rounder options.

Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, with his promotion to full-time T20I confirmed by Australia alongside the squad announcement.

A lookback at the T20 World Cup Final 2021

Selection chair George Bailey believes Australia have a well-balanced squad and is confident of a strong showing in the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup.

“This is an experienced squad with extensive World Cup experience that offers a variety of structures and covers the scenarios the panel believes will factor in the West Indies with the unique nature of the venues and our opponents," Bailey said. “It’s great to have Ashton Agar back into the squad following a spate of unfortunate and untimely injuries.   “We believe Ashton can play a critical role in this tournament along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green and Mitch Marsh in complementing our front-line attack options.  “The batting options available allow a tailored approach to each venue and opponent.”

Bailey noted that the squad size of 15 left many in-form players unlucky to miss selection.

“Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett were all part of long conversations, along with several others, including Jake Fraser-McGurk who is yet to play T20 International cricket but continues to impress and is developing rapidly," Bailey said. “Being constrained to a squad of 15 for World Cups is always a challenge given the different scenarios and options we’d like to cover.   “We will continue monitoring several players who have missed out on this preliminary squad and note that if we need to change this squad, we have the option to do so over the coming month in accordance with ICC regulations.   “Ultimately the balance of the final 15 needs to provide the best chance of being successful in this campaign.”

While Marsh has been performing the role as interim captain of Australia's T20I side for much of the last 12 months, the T20 World Cup will be his first major tournament as skipper.

"It's been an immense privilege to play for my country and now an even greater honour to lead the squad to a World Cup," Marsh said,

"We have had some strong success in recent times and I am hopeful that will continue in what looks like a wide-open tournament."

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

All teams are allowed to make changes to their squad until 25 May, after which any alteration will require approval from ICC's Event Technical Committee.

Hetmyer, Shamar Joseph in West Indies squad for 2024 T20 World Cup

Shimron Hetmyer has been named in West Indies' 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Shamar Joseph , the 24-year-old fast bowler who has played only three T20s and is yet to make his international debut in the format, has also been called up.

Alzarri Joseph has been named deputy to captain Rovman Powell, while Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Jason Holder have all made the squad.

Hetmyer was dropped from the 2022 T20 World Cup squad after he missed his flight . He played in the series against India and England last year before he was dropped for the final two T20Is of the England series and was subsequently left out of the white-ball squads for the Australia tour.

West Indies, who have won the T20 World Cup twice (2012 and 2016), have had an underwhelming run in the last two editions of the tournament. In 2021, led by Kieron Pollard, they failed to make the knockouts after winning just one match in the group phase. A year later in Australia, they failed to make the main round under Nicholas Pooran's captaincy. They also missed out on qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India after failing to progress through the Qualifier.

"I'm making it very clear to everybody that whatever team that you hear us put out today, that team we feel is going to win the World Cup," Desmond Haynes, West Indies' chairman of selectors, said after the squad announcement.

Hayes pointed out that while the selectors had jotted down names for the reserves, a final list would be worked out post West Indies A's tour of Nepal and the home T20I series against South Africa. A preparatory camp is set to be held in Antigua from next weekend for the South Africa series. White-ball head coach Sammy also said CWI has requested the BCCI to release West Indies players from the ongoing IPL as soon as possible.

Why was Shamar Joseph included?

Haynes said that the inclusion of Shamar and Hetmyer was role-specific, something Daren Sammy had stressed upon.

"You really can't question Shamar Joseph's skills," Haynes said. "You saw him in Australia. We were looking at someone up front bowling the first powerplay and he ticks the boxes."

Shamar, who made his name with a stunning seven-wicket haul that helped West Indies seal a historic Test win at the Gabba, is one of several West Indies players at the IPL. He was signed by Lucknow Super Giants as a replacement player, but had a difficult debut, where he conceded 47 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders . In his three T20s, he has conceded 9.91 runs an over and is yet to take a wicket.

Sammy said that picking the squad was "difficult" as they had several contenders to parse through. One of them was fast bowler Matthew Forde, who made his West Indies debut against England in the home white-ball series following a successful 2023 CPL. However, Sammy echoed Haynes' comments on how Shamar had pipped other new ball contenders including Forde.

"Shamar Joseph has the pace, he has skills with the new ball," Sammy said. "Not saying Matthew Forde doesn't, but when you look at the role, it makes it easier for us to now pick the personnel to fit that role."

Haynes: 'Very close decision between Hetmyer and Kyle Mayers'

Haynes admitted that it was a "very close decision" picking Hetmyer over Kyle Mayers, who has been a regular opener in the past while doubling up as a handy medium-pace bowler. The selectors felt having a finisher was more important than a top-order batter like Mayers, who is currently in IPL as part of LSG.

Left-arm spinner Fabian Allen, who is playing in Nepal with the West Indies A team, is another player West Indies selectors have their eye on.

Sammy also said that Brandon King, who missed West Indies A's ongoing tour of Nepal due to knee injury, will be playing the T20 series at home against South Africa which will serve as preparation for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup starting from June 1. In case King remains unfit, West Indies have until May 25 to make changes to their provisional 15.

As for the inclusion of Roson Chase, the lone offspinner in the squad, Haynes highlighted that numbers proved he was the "most economical bowler" in addition to being a capable allrounder and can play a "similar role" to Marlon Samuels when West Indies won the T20 World Cups.

Sammy had 'conversations with Narine'

When asked whether Sunil Narine was in the running considering his outstanding all-round form in the ongoing IPL, West Indies head coach Sammy said: "Ever since I became coach I have had conversations with all players who took part in (2023) CPL that I thought that could have an impact for us this World Cup. So yes, I had conversations with Narine. (But) as the news clearly stated, Narine is retired."

Sammy: 'Have 15 X-factors'

Sammy was the captain when West Indies won the T20 World Cup, first in Sri Lanka in 2012 and then in India in 2016. Johnson Charles and Russell, who returned to play for West Indies during the Australia series in January after a long hiatus, were both part of those wins. Sammy admitted he was motivated by the prospect of becoming the first team to win a T20 World Cup at home.

Asked who he would single out as an X-factor player in the West Indies squad, Sammy said: "This period here reminds me of when I was captain, Ottis Gibson or Phil Simmons was coach, sitting down in selection, having a healthy performance squad to pick from and you look at all angles, which 15 men you put on the park, and what every single angle could give you an advantage. I have 15 X-factors there. Dessie [Desmond Haynes] reminded me in the meeting we have matchwinners, And the world knows it."

West Indies schedule for group phase

West Indies are in Group C along with Papua New Guinea (PNG), Uganda, New Zealand and Afghanistan. Their first two games are in Providence, Guyana, against PNG on June 2 and against Uganda on June 8. They then play New Zealand at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on June 12, before their last group game against Afghanistan on June 17 in St Lucia.

West Indies cricketer Devon Thomas banned for match fixing

Sport West Indies cricketer Devon Thomas banned for match fixing

A professional cricketer catches a pink ball, on the boundary rope.

West Indies batter Devon Thomas has been banned from cricket for five years, with 18 months suspended, after admitting to seven charges including those related to match-fixing in franchise-based leagues in Sri Lanka, UAE and the West Indies, the ICC says.

The sentence will be backdated to May 23 last year, when the West Indies batter was provisionally suspended. The 34-year-old will be eligible to play again in November 2026.

Thomas admitted he agreed to fix matches in the Lanka Premier League believing it was required for his selection, and accepted money from someone who approached him for match-fixing in the Caribbean Premier League, but denied going through with a fix.

He was also approached for fixing matches in Abu Dhabi T10 and turned it down but failed to report the incident to the designated anti-corruption official, Thomas told the ICC's anti-corruption unit (ACU).

"This ban is apt and should send a strong message to players and corrupters that attempts to corrupt our sport will be dealt with firmly," Alex Marshall, general manager of the ICC's integrity unit, said in a statement.

Thomas is required to provide witness statements and testimony, if necessary, in an ongoing investigation and not commit further offences in order to avoid serving the suspended 18 months, the ACU said in its official decision.
