10 Australian bands to catch on tour in 2022

Our pick of 10 of the best bands heading northwards this year

This Wednesday is Australia Day, an admittedly problematic holiday that celebrates the First Fleet’s arrival way back in 1788. Obviously, that didn’t work out great for everyone involved. What is uncontroversial however, is that Australian music is in very rude health. So let’s take this opportunity to look some great Australian bands and artists doing a First Fleet in reverse and arriving on our shores in 2022.

Gang Of Youths (March)

The Sydney alt rockers hit a winning formula by marrying a love of 80s alternative (Sonic Youth, The Replacements) to stadium-ready bombast (U2, Bruce Springsteen). Frontman Dave Le’aupepe’s lyrics don’t shy from dark corners and their third full-length, Angel In Realtime , depicts a band resolute in the face of personal trials. Expect rock ‘n’ roll catharsis when they roll into the UK this March.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets (March)

The e-mail filter-triggering Perth psych rockers were first brought together by a mutual ‘purveyor of controlled substances’ and started off jamming in an old barn. Endearingly shambolic origins and puerile name aside, they are no joke. The riffs are like obelisks, the musicianship intricate and accomplished and the songs sprawling yet focused. For fans of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala and Pond.

The Stroppies (April)

Melbourne’s The Stroppies are an amalgamation of some of the best indie pop bands to come out of the city in the last decade; the band’s members have spent time in Twerps, Dick Diver, The Stevens, Boomgates and Blank Statements, amongst others. From the scruffy lo-fi charm of their debut EP, the band jumped lightyears ahead with 2019’s Whoosh! and 2020’s superbly woozy Look Alive . One of those bands that seems predestined for even bigger things.

Amyl & The Sniffers (May/June)

The ferocious garage punks are one of Australia’s most buzzworthy bands, thanks to two critically adored records: 2019’s self-titled debut and last year’s hard-charging Comfort To Me . Frontwoman Amy Taylor is a spandex-clad force of nature, slap bang in the centre of the badass Venn diagram between Poly Styrene, Furiosa from Mad Max , Iggy Pop and Pete Shelley. With the Sniffers laying down an ear-shredding assault behind her, this one’ll make your head spin.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever (May/June)

RBCF are disciples of the hallowed Antipodean craft of jangle, particularly as preached by The Go-Betweens and NZ’s The Chills. The self-described “soft punk/hard pop” quintet have a tougher approach than your average indie pop band, but their melodies will take up such permanent residence in your brain that they should really be paying council tax. This tour has been in the works for so long that they might even have a third full length out by the time it comes around.

Crowded House (June)

As with Pavlova, flat whites and Russell Crowe, New Zealand and Australia will always dispute ownership of Neil Finn’s supremely tuneful troupe. NZ-bred but formed in Melbourne, Crowded House found worldwide fame through perennial hits including ‘Weather With You’, ‘Fall At Your Feet’ and ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’. Reformed in 2007 after an extended absence, the band remain purveyors of the finest and smartest pop music out there, while Finn is a brilliantly compelling and charismatic frontman.

Genesis Owusu (June)

Owusu was born in Ghana but raised in Canberra, from where he’s rapidly establishing himself as Australia’s brightest hip hop star (sorry Iggy). Tracks like The Other Black Dog and Drown showcase Owusu’s incredible musicality, seamlessly weaving funk, synth pop and jazz into a sound that feels like a unique rush of energy. Guaranteed to leave you sweaty and smiling.

Courtney Barnett ( June/July)

Some things demand to be loved – not in an aggressive way, more objectively non-negotiable. Pizza. Puppies. Jonathan Van Ness. Add Courtney Barnett to that list. Her laconic delivery, matter-of-fact profundity, warm sense of humour, perfect guitar tone – Barnett is a gift and we’re the endlessly grateful recipients. If you’re yet to be converted, get yourself down to one of her gigs opening for the Foos and see what we’re on about.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (August)

Despite their frontman’s reputation for gloriously gothic gloom, the Bad Seeds are a riveting proposition live. Anyone present when they last headlined All Points East in 2018 will testify to Ol’ Nick’s mesmerising stage presence and demented preacher energy, which reached fevered heights on ‘The Mercy Seat’. Who knows, maybe Kylie will show up again?

Tame Impala (August)

Perth’s Kevin Parker is maybe the biggest Australian musical export of this millennium. His psych rock band’s rise to fame has seen them go from opening for MGMT to collaborating with Mark Ronson, Mick Jagger and Lady Gaga, selling shedloads of albums and filling stadia all over the world. Their UK date at All Points East comes off the back of their hugely successful fourth album, The Slow Rush .

THE ANGELS announce Australian National Tour dates

Rescheduled 'darkroom recharged' and 'greatest hits' shows.

4 May 2022 The Rockpit

australian band tours 2022

Australian rock royalty,  The Angels  have announced their rescheduled tour dates for 2022 for both the  Darkroom Recharged  and  Greatest Hits tours. Running from May through to December and commencing with shows in the band’s birthplace of Adelaide, performances have been confirmed across Melbourne, NSW, Queensland and Perth.

This announcement follows rave reviews for their performances on the Red Hot Summer Tour and their set at Bluesfest, which Guitarist John Brewster described as,  “one of the most magic things we’ve done in a long time”   and was hailed by Bluesfest director Peter Noble as  “one of the great Bluesfest shows”.

Darkroom Recharged  is a four to the floor rock show in the great tradition of Aussie pubs and clubs.  The re-recorded classic album of the same name was released in 2020 and gifted fans with a new version of the record featuring founding members John and Rick Brewster, singer Dave Gleeson, drummer Nick Norton, and John’s son, Sam, on bass.  The “recharged” double version also featured the full record as a live album, recorded at the Bridge Hotel in Sydney.

Upon release, Rick Brewster said,  “Darkroom has always been a very special album for us, marking the time when we left Alberts and toured America and Europe. It completes the Face to Face/No Exit/Darkroom Trilogy, recorded both in the Studio and Live, with bonus tracks and the occasional  progression  from the original recordings”.

John Brewster also explained,  “The Angels have a long history that we can be proud of, as we are every member that’s played in the band over the years. These days we continue to write and record new songs, and with Dave Gleeson, Sam Brewster and Nick Norton it’s great to revisit the Darkroom album, one of my favourites.”

The  Greatest Hits  dates in August and September will thrill audiences with performances of wall-to-wall hits,  ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, ‘No Secrets’, ‘Take A Long Line’, ‘Shadow Boxer’, ‘Marseilles’, ‘Comin’ Down’, ‘After The Rain’, ‘Face The Day’, ‘Fashion and Fame’, ‘Let The Night Roll On’, ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’, ‘Mr Damage’  … and more.

The Angels have celebrated some major milestones in recent times seeing the 45th  anniversary of their debut single release,  ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ , roll around and vocalist Dave Gleeson has also now been performing the band for over 10 years.

As the book,  The 100 Best Australian Albums  pointed out,  “The Angels can lay claim to being Australia’s longest-lasting band.” They have been on the road consistently since 1974 and it took a global pandemic to slow them down.  Now the band is itching to get back on stage and they’re not mucking around!””

The upcoming tour dates will celebrate Bieber’s latest album Justice. Released in March 2021, it debuted as the most streamed album in 117 countries and features huge tracks including ‘Peaches’, ‘Anyone’, ‘Lonely’ and ‘Holy’.

Add to that his incredible catalogue – including July’s smash hit ‘Stay’ featuring Australia’s own The Kid LAROI, alongside five studio albums that span more than a decade of hits.

Each show on this tour promises to be a celebration for both Justin Bieber and his fans, who have been looking forward to these new shows since the pandemic sidelined the previously announced 2020 dates. These tour dates will be even more special because they mark his first global outing since 2016/17’s Purpose world tour.

Truly cementing his place as one of the biggest pop stars of the 21 st  century.

Get to know Ticketmaster’s Smart Queue

If you aren’t familiar with Smart Queue , it is Ticketmaster’s way of creating a clear and fair process for thousands of fans to buy tickets in a short space of time. Fans enter the virtual Waiting Room prior to onsale time before joining the Smart Queue – which acts as a ‘virtual line’, helping us protect you and your tickets in a more effective way.

The time you join the Waiting Room does not determine your place in the Smart Queue, so we recommend joining at least 10 minutes prior to the event going on sale but there is no need to rush.

When the sale begins, the Smart Queue will open and everyone in the Waiting Room is given a place in line. Those who did not join the Waiting Room will be placed at the end of the line.

  • Sign in to your Ticketmaster account at least 10 minutes before joining the Waiting Room. This will speed up your purchase later.
  • Confirm you have a valid form of payment in your account with current email and billing information. This will make checkout a breeze.
  • Resist the urge to refresh. Your page will automatically refresh when you enter the Smart Queue.
  • Keep an eye on the time! When it’s your turn, your spot will be held for 10 minutes to begin shopping.
  • Just like before, tickets are always based on availability, demand, and are not guaranteed.

Why can’t I access my tickets?

There is a ticket release delay in place until Friday 4th November 2022 at 9am. Tickets cannot be downloaded or printed until after this time.

Is Justin Bieber’s ‘Justice World Tour’ an all ages event?

Justin Bieber’s ‘Justice World Tour’ is a licensed, loud music event, staged over a long time and we do not recommend attendance by children aged 5 years and under.

Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times and have purchased a valid ticket.  No concession tickets will be available for children, they must have a ticket.

Are there VIP packages available for Justin Bieber’s ‘Justice World Tour’?

Yes – there will be five seated VIP Experience Packages (Justice, Ghost, Peaches, Hold On & Somebody) available for Justin Bieber’s Australian tour dates. See above for all inclusions. See terms and conditions here.

Make sure you have a My Ticketmaster account

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as they’re progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the Waiting Room and when you’re being pushed through the Smart Queue and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is as popular as Justin Bieber, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: Justin Bieber will bring his latest album Justice to Australia and New Zealand in November 2022. Tickets go on sale Wednesday 24 November via Ticketmaster.com.au.
