Choosing the Right Graphite Design Tour AD Shaft

best tour ad shaft for 3 wood

And, Webb Simpson won THE PLAYERS 2018 Championship with the new higher launching Tour IZ 5X!

The Tour AD DI model is the first Graphite Design shaft design that was integrated with Toray Company’s original NANOALLOY material technology in the tip section of the shaft. This material technology has now come to be known as “DI Technology”. This unique material technology promotes additionally shaft stability without the loss of feel and allows the player to create greater club head speed and thus greater ball speed while still providing exceptional feel and control.

Best Fairway Wood Shafts 2023 - And Recommendations Based On YOUR Swing

Best Fairway Wood Shafts 2023 - And Recommendations Based On YOUR Swing

By DanSueltz July 27th, 2023

The Best fairway wood shafts - 2023 edition continues to see performance improvements in both distance (ball speed, spin) and accuracy.  New shaft technology from Fujikura, Project X, Mitsubishi Chemical Golf, and Graphite Design are leading the way.

The performance improvements we are seeing in fairway woods over the last couple of years are close to what we have seen in drivers!

See Our 2023 Blog on Best Fairway Woods

Getting the RIGHT Shaft

As usual, from our perspective, the proper shaft in your fairway woods makes ALL the difference in consistency, accuracy and distance!

If you are struggling with your fairway woods,

Read This Blog First!

Use Our FREE Fitting Wizard to find the RIGHT Shaft for YOUR Swing!

The short answer in fitting fairway wood shafts is to choose a shaft that has a little more weight than your driver, and has a slightly softer tip section to get the ball in the air.

How We Categorized The Best

We picked four categories for the Best Fairways for 2023 based upon distance golfers hit their 3 wood.   This is not necessarily the best way to categorize them as some players that do not hit their 3 wood very far still prefer a smaller head, and visa versa.  In general, in our fittings, these categories work very well in determining head design and shaft selection.

Stronger Players - 3 Wood Over 250 Yards

Strong players - 3 wood 210 - 250 yards, average players - 3 wood 170 - 210 yards, three wood distance under 170 yards.

You should be using a 70+ or 80+ gram shaft if you are hitting these distances.  Not all shaft companies are making 80+ gram shafts these days but there are some good ones out there from ACCRA, Fujikura, Graphite Design and Project X.

Lower Launch

There are also 70+ gram versions in each of the above shafts.  If your tempo is fast an 80+ gram shaft will suit you better.

Again, there are 70+ gram versions in each of these great shafts.

You should still be playing at least a 70+ gram shaft in this distance range.  Heavier if you have a very fast tempo and transition.  More than likely looking for more of a mid-launch, mid-spin shaft depending upon your game.

Mid to Low-Mid Launch

Great results from OBAN Kiyoshi Black 75 , TPT 15 LO , Graphite Design Tour AD HD 7 , Fujikura VENTUS Blue , Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX 70 and KBS TD 70 .   At a lower price point try the Graphite Design MAD PRO 75 or the Mitsubishi C6 Blue 70.

A lot of excellent results from OBAN Isawa Red 75 , TPT 15 HI , Mitsubishi TENSEI CK Pro Blue 7 , Fujikura VENTUS Red 7 , Project X HZRDUS Smoke Yellow and ACCRA TZ6 75 are our favorites.  At a lower price point you should look at the Fujikura Vista Pro 21 75 and ACCRA FX 3.0 200F.

You should still be playing a 60+ to 70+ gram shaft depending upon the shaft weight of your driver.  Usually go 10 grams heavier but sometimes stay with the same weight as your driver for a little more distance.  More than likely looking for more of a mid-launch, mid-spin shaft depending upon your game, however some players may like a mid-high trajectory with a little more spin for more carry.

A lot of excellent results from OBAN Isawa Red 65 or 75 , TPT 17 LO  or HI, Mitsubishi TENSEI CK Pro Blue 6 or 7 , Fujikura Ventus Blue , Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Red or Black,   and ACCRA TZ6 75 are our best performers.  At a lower price point you should look at the Mitsubishi C6 Blue 70 ,   Fujikura VistPro 21 75 and ACCRA FX 3.0 200F.

Mid-High Launch

For a little more carry try the   ACCRA FX 3.0 100F , TPT 17 HI ,  Graphite Design Tour AD BB or UB 6 or 7 and Fujikura Ventus Red 6 or 7 .

Shaft weights will be in the 50+ to 60+ gram range.  Depends upon the shaft weight of your driver.  Usually go 10 grams heavier but sometimes stay with the same weight as your driver for a little more distance.  More than likely looking for more of a mid-high launch, mid-high spin shaft,  however if you struggle to get the ball in the air you should play a high trajectory with a little more spin for more carry.

For a little more carry try the KBS TD 50 or 60 ,  ACCRA FX 3.0 100F , TPT 18 LO , Mitsubishi Diamana TB 50 or 60 , Graphite Design Tour AD BB or UB 5 or 6 and  Fujikura VENTUS Red 5 or 6 .   Excellent price points for the Veylix Alpina 573 and 673 and the Mitsubishi C6 Red 5 and 6 .

High Launch

For even higher launch check out the   TPT 18 HI ,   ACCRA iFwy , Fujikura Vista Pro 21 55, 60, and 65, and the UST Mamiya Helium .

Tour AD DI or IZ in 3 wood?

To those who may have both, I wanted to have your opinions.

I play a IZ 6x in my driver and wanted to see about the 3 wood. Do you recommend me going IZ 7x or DI 7x in 3 wood?  I currently have a AD DI 7x in my 3 wood but feel it is sometimes loose. Especially after hitting a IZ 6x in my driver, which feels so much more consistent.

just worried about getting IZ in 3 wood because of all the posts saying it penetrates and isnt good for landing softly and approach shots. I need the 3 wood for off the tee but also for reaching par 5s in two...

If more launch is needed, loft is something that can also be looked at. Playing an IZ 7x at 16.5 is an option if 15 launches too low.

I would concur having used the DI for a while and then moving to the IZ, the IZ definitely plays higher.

hartrick11

I have IZ 7x in both driver and 3w and in my fitting agreed with the above comments that it launches a little higher than the DI, with a bit less kick/more linear feel.

In a similar boat here. Play IZ in driver and DI in fairway. I love the IZ, it’s ridiculously good for me in driver and am wondering whether the DI has a touch too much kick in the fairway.

My understanding is IZ in the fairway would give me slightly higher launch, all being equal, and a just a more linear feel/less kick than the DI.

Where you get that info? If true I might have to get a IZ for my 3w.

I’m loving the IZ in my 4 wood.

Long Shot

I played AD IZ in 6x (in Ping head), and recently switched to AD HD in driver (ZX5 Head). I actually went with AD-DI 6x in 3 wood (ZX fw head) and have found lots of success (and speed). I went with the lighter 3 wood head for a little more speed, and it feels similar to the 7x (maybe a tad softer)

From Graphite Design. It’s also what I’ve found in driver, that IZ launches higher than DI.

Loft is 100% the biggest factor versus shaft for launch. I’m also trying to manage spin though, to not exceed 3000rpm.

Gamed the DI for many years, tested the IZ more than once.  IZ wins hands down.  I found the DI to be loose for me as well granted I did hit the longest drives with it.  It was feast or famine.  IZ for me, is just consistent and also feels smoother than the DI.  It's just reliable and I know what to expect every single time.  If I wasn't such a high launch/spin player, I would game the IZ in a heart beat.

if you're looking for similar feel to IZ in your driver...try the TP in 3 wood. they kick less/feel tighter then the DI and found the TP feels very similar to the IZ and perfect for fairway woods as doesn't launch quite as high or spin up too much

I have the XC in my driver and the IZ in my 3 wood. Love this combination.

I'm playing the IZ5s in my driver and IZ7s in my Rogue 4 wood 17* which helps get the ball up in the air from the fairway.  Def agree with above posts about the loft, had a 15* went to the 17* Play the DI's in my hybrids which are great.  IZ hybrid shaft is lower launch from what I have read.

Anybody know anything about how it plays for hybrids?

Whats the difference between the IZ vs. the DI in hybrids?  Some have said that for hybrids, the IZ shaft launchs lower than the DI which seems to be the opposite for Drivers and Fairway woods.

seems like everyone plays the DI in hybrids…even those who play the IZ in their drivers and 3 woods…

MerryTex

I've seen a lot of people play the DI in hybrids as well. It just seems to work for a lot of people.

To get back to your original question, I would possibly try out an IZ in the fairway wood or you could tip you DI a touch to feel a little firmer in the tip section. I've known people to do that with that shaft in their driver and they love the feel. I actually might let go of my IZ in favor of a DI in the driver.

Is IZ launch as high as Fujikura Motore F3?

Sometimes, I think my F3 flies little too high for my liking, and was wondering whether I should consider the option between IZ or DI.

Using IZ 8S in hybrid and loving it!

Moreover, possibly including Ventus Red/Blue into equation as well.

I played the DI in a 5 wood and an Iz in my 3 wood. Had no problem getting the Iz up and spinning. It was a good combo

I recently put an IZ95 in my driving iron and found it to be slightly lower than the DI but more penetrating ball flight. The 85/95 IZ profile aligns more to the TP shaft line, which is why I went that route (one piece feel). It could maybe be because of the club it is in (19* driving iron) but I love it a lot more than the DI which always felt loose to me.

My post is a year late, but the IZ launches lower and has a flatter trajectory than the DI for the hybrid shaft.  Much more stable as well IMO.

  • Designed to promote High launch angles with Mid ball spin rates.

Tip Trimming for Standard Bore:

  • Pro’s Choice encourages consulting a PGA Professional or qualified club builder to help you determine the correct shaft and length for your swing profile and to meet your goals.

  2. Tour AD DI or IZ for 3 wood?

Total Rating 100%. Posted June 16, 2018. I have a DI 7S in my 5 wood and it's great. I don't think any shaft would be able to kick it out, even an IZ. However I said the same thing about the DI 6S that was replaced by an IZ. For some reason the IZ feels like a good driver shaft. Not sure about a fairway shaft.

  3. 3 wood shaft suggestions

I have always played 3 wood a little heavier than driver and 75 grams is ideal for a lot of players it has come to seem like. Quote. Cobra Aerojet LS 9° | Graphite Design Tour AD VF 5x. 4. Recommended Graphite Design shaft for fairway woods

The AD-DI, GT, and IZ all fit the classic fairway wood profile bill, however this will depend on what you're goals are with these clubs. 5. Club Junkie Review: Graphite Design Tour AD VF wood shaft

The color combination is definitely more subtle than some of the other Tour AD shaft combinations. Graphite Design doesn't make too many low-launching shafts, so the VF is filling that need. The VF will suit players looking for low/,id launch and low spin shaft to put in their driver or fairway wood. The shaft profile is a firm+ handle ...

The Tour AD DI also utilizes premium, aerospace quality 50t carbon-fiber materials to provide the best performing shaft available. 15. Graphite Design Tour AD UB Shaft Review

The Graphite Design Tour AD UB sticks with the tried and true aesthetic of the Tour AD series but with one of the series's bolder color choices. The upper portion of the shaft is a very attractive blue that I can best describe as a dark turquoise . Just below the branding, that shifts to silver for a less distracting look at address.

  16. Shaft Review

For this discussion, we chose the VR-6 Stiff flex which is in the middle of the weight range for this shaft and compared it to Graphite Design's IZ-6 S. The shafts both weigh 64.9 grams. Consistent with their other shafts, the VR is made with high performance, high quality 50t carbon-fiber materials.

  18. Tour AD DI or IZ in 3 wood?

Total Rating 100%. Posted April 5, 2021. I played AD IZ in 6x (in Ping head), and recently switched to AD HD in driver (ZX5 Head). I actually went with AD-DI 6x in 3 wood (ZX fw head) and have found lots of success (and speed). I went with the lighter 3 wood head for a little more speed, and it feels similar to the 7x (maybe a tad softer) Quote.
