The Bodine Collection – Chronicling Farmall History!

Bodine collection

What can you say about a day spent spanning a collection of over 300 Farmall tractors, literature and memorabilia and more? The Bodine collection is amazing. The family is an 8th generation farming family. With the grandkids, it is a 9th generation farm!

Bodine collection

The Bodine’s farm is located in Guntersville, Alabama. After meeting Randy Bodine at the Gateway Farm Toy Show in St. Louis, I jumped when he extended an invitation to check out his family farm and collection.

Post Flywheelers

The Elliotts, Kent, Jane and their daughter Beth were our traveling companions to the Florida Flywheelers. The first segment of the Bodine collection stop was in Opelika, Alabama. The stop was Bodine Landscape Service, Randy and Jana Bodine’s business. Both, Randy and his brother Robert have landscape businesses. Randy’s is in Opelika, near Auburn where he went to college.

Bodine collectibles

The Opelika collection!

In Opelika, we lika it! Sorry, I couldn’t resist! We saw tractors and memorabilia. We learned the story of the Bodine family farm.

The Bodine’s started farming 188 years ago. They have their own family cemetery that has a historical marker! In the cemetery they have markers from the War of 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War.

The Bodines’ grew cotton and it was Randy, Robert and their sister Glenese’s grandfather that transitioned farming with mules to tractors. Read about this in an upcoming issue of Red Power magazine. Once the family transitioned and funds allowed, they added an implement to the tractor and left it attached. This made it so the tractor never had to be changed out and was always ready to go.

Bodine Collection

Memorabilia and more!

At Opelika we saw some amazing Farmall memorabilia. Randy is the Farmall memorabilia king. He has such a cool collection, watch for an article in C lassic Farm and Tractors. We saw tractors, truck and a bit of everything at Opelika. But, the neatest of all was an experimental cotton picker on a Farmall B. This came from the Hopson Plantation. Randy hopes to restore this with a grant down the road.

Guntersville

Bodine Collection

The Bodine farm backs up to Guntersville Lake. The acreage was once part of the Bodine farm. Randy said the land for the lake was acquired when the Tennessee Valley Authority built the 69,000 acre lake. It was completed in 1939.

Robert lives on in the 1904 family homestead. On the farm they used to raise cotton. Today the farm is in CRP. A look around would make you think they raise Farmalls!

Bodine collection

Saving Farmall History

Randy said they were preserving Farmall history one piece at a time. After visiting their collection, I believe this is true. The Bodine Collection is a gem, a true reflection of a family that cares about their history, and the International Harvester story!

Photographing Baltimore’s Working Class

Baltimore’s A. Aubrey Bodine cast a romantic light on the city’s dockworkers in painterly photographs

Abigail Tucker

Longshoremen

The man habitually carried a compass to find the sun on cloudy days; toilet paper to diffuse the light of his flashbulbs; and a machete to deal with unsightly vegetation—and heaven knows what else—that got in his way. But A. Aubrey Bodine once said his favorite tool was his alarm clock.

To take advantage of morning light, the Maryland photographer often rose before dawn and set out for the Baltimore waterfront, where the big freighters might be ferrying sugar, bananas or, as on the day Longshoremen was shot in 1955 at the B&O railroad pier, rubber. “He’d go down there in the middle of the night sometimes, with thousands of dollars of camera equipment,” his daughter Jennifer recalls. “It was a violent, filthy, terrifying place.” But Longshoremen belies the port’s industrial ugliness. With spotlight-like sunshine, it is as elegant as a theater set, the draped cargo net adding the nautical touch that Bodine loved.

The image ran in the Sunday Baltimore Sun , where Bodine, a staff photographer, published almost all his work; it also won prizes in competitions around the world, particularly in the Eastern bloc. Politically, Bodine stood somewhere “to the right of Ivan the Terrible,” according to his editor and biographer, the late Harold Williams, but he shared the communists’ reverence for the worker. Farmers driving yokes of oxen, grimy miners and, especially, dockworkers and watermen—Bodine shot them all. He was an indefatigable laborer himself, taking nearly 50,000 photographs before his death, at age 64, in 1970. In an era when newspaper photos were usually uncredited, Bodine demanded a byline, and before long it was known throughout the state and beyond.

Yet he remained secretive about the initial “A.” It stood for Aldine.

He started at the Sun as a 14-year-old messenger boy in 1920. He caught a break in 1924, when one of the paper’s commercial photographers was scorched in a flash-powder explosion. Even without volatile equipment, photography was a risky enterprise; Bodine loved shooting the Chesapeake Bay, but he couldn’t swim and was forever clinging to the masts of oyster boats, saddled with a large-format camera as heavy as a millstone. Yet he practiced his craft relentlessly, accepting newspaper assignments not only on his wedding morning but on his honeymoon as well. He began shooting primarily for the Sun ’s Sunday photography section in 1927 and its Sunday magazine in 1946.

According to even his closest friends, he was not a sociable man. “I do not cover fires or anyone bitten by a dog,” he once declared, apparently oblivious to the feelings of newsroom colleagues who did. One of them remarked that had Bodine drowned on one of his water shoots, his “body would have floated upstream.” Yet he was admired. “He had it all figured out,” says Walter McCardell, who joined the Sun ’s photography staff in 1945. “He learned what time the sun rose. I think he knew the tides.” McCardell once tagged along with him on a predawn shoot, “but Bodine didn’t like how the sun was coming up.” After the sun misbehaved for two more mornings, McCardell elected to stay in bed.

Bodine preferred idyllic scenes. He was a pictorialist, part of a photographic movement dating from the late 1800s that favors a painterly aesthetic. Pictorialists freely manipulate their subjects; Bodine thought nothing of removing eyesores, adding props and posing people—including the dockworkers in Longshoremen , according to Kathleen Ewing, author of A. Aubrey Bodine: Baltimore Pictorialist . If he still wasn’t satisfied, the darkroom offered myriad remedies. He was adept at dubbing in sea gulls or brightening the whitecaps on waves. He kept a fishing tackle box full of cloud negatives for enlivening lackluster skies. Some of his practices would be firing offenses at newspapers today, but they were a more acceptable part of feature photography then.

At home, Bodine—which is what even his daughter Jennifer calls him—covered the dining room table with his fresh prints, so the family frequently ate in the kitchen. Gold toner filled the bathtub; the Bodines bathed next door. He was out on assignment throughout Jennifer’s childhood, or so it seemed. When he was home, she prayed he wouldn’t be the one to drive her to a birthday party—too often he would spot a picture on the way and pull the car over, delivering her, pouting in patent leather and crinoline, hours late.

Health problems, including diabetes and hypertension, shadowed Bodine’s later years, but he was undeterred. During one hospital stay, Williams writes, a night watchman discovered him on the roof in his bathrobe, shooting Baltimore’s moonlit skyline. During another, Bodine was found in the lobby, where some of his photographs were displayed. He set about autographing each one until a nurse telephoned the psychiatric ward. “I think one of your patients is down here,” she said, “pretending he’s Aubrey Bodine.”

On the last day of his life he went out to photograph a church spire, another favorite subject, but returned to the office empty-handed, telling editors that the light had “conked out” on him. He then retreated to the darkroom, where he collapsed. He died of a massive stroke.

Jennifer—who named her only child, a girl, Bodine—now spends her time cataloging her father’s endless prints: the record of where he was all those years.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Radiators fail once more: Moscow suburbs residents appeal to Putin

R esidents across the Moscow suburbs are besieged by a heating problem, for which they plead direct intervention from President Vladimir Putin. These individuals have yet to experience any semblance of home heating since winter started due to a dwindling supply of heating oil. The issue, one largely avoided by local authority communication, has left residents desperate to the point of directly appealing to the president.

While plots have been uncovered to disrupt Ukraine's infrastructure for a second consecutive winter, thus depriving civilians of heating, it seems Russians are now mired in their crisis. Irony drips from the fact that those under Putin's leadership are looking to cause turmoil in Ukraine, yet at home, they face a similar predicament.

Many dwellings within the Moscow agglomeration are presently without heat. The capital's residents are desperate, directly appealing to President Putin due to a perceived lack of alternate avenues for assistance. The absence of suitable heating functionality since winter commenced pushes them towards desperation with no relief in sight.

This seems improbable, but in Russia, it appears that anything can happen.

It remains uncertain if Vladimir Putin is actively addressing the heating crisis. Some experts suggest that Russia's heating oil reserves are depleting, which negatively affects residents' quality of life. Plagued by cold radiators and plummeting winter temperatures, these citizens have directly addressed their pleas to their head of state.

This heating crisis is happening in Elektrostal, a town approximately 71 miles from Moscow.

Ironically, Russia has constantly aimed to destroy the Ukrainian infrastructure since war broke out, deliberately trying to leave Ukrainians without heating during the harsh winters, aiming to break their strong will. It's an irony they now struggle with a domestic heating crisis, particularly near Moscow, their largest and most pivotal city.

Desperate individuals are reaching out to Vladimir Putin. They question his knowledge of the heating infrastructure conditions in the Moscow suburbs and the dire situations residents face there. Sundown brings no relief from the harsh Russian winter and without heating, their houses turn cold. With elections nearing, more and more residents find themselves reaching out directly to their president.

"Since winter's start, we've been without heating. This has been a yearly occurrence for the past three years. Despite paying for heating, we don't have enough. We implore you, help us!" - these are the desperate pleas from the heavily dressed populace dealing with the Russian winter conditions.

Experts attribute the heating oil shortage to international sanctions and surging demands for diesel fuel, pivotal to military operations. Russia now grapples with a dearth of raw materials essential for boiler and heating plant operation. As supplies dwindle, houses grow cold with little hope of any immediate corrective intervention.

It would be adequate if the war ceased, residents were prioritized, and attention accorded to their welfare.
