Why Go To Bonaire

On the pristine island of Bonaire, the main attraction lies beneath the water's surface. To travel to this paradise without exploring its underwater treasures would be a regrettable misstep. Though any Caribbean getaway promises a welcome retreat from the daily grind, Bonaire is less about relaxing on a beach and more about adventure and exploration. Despite the island only measuring 112 square miles, it offers a wealth of activities. If you're not an avid diver, hike around Washington Slagbaai National Park and admire the rugged scenery, or venture off the beaten path to discover hidden caves. Explore Rincon , the island's oldest town, or learn to windsurf with world champions. Or shop, dine, and dance in Kralendijk – Bonaire’s compact and colorful little capital is enchanting and easily explored from end to end on foot.

The past few years have seen many new luxe resorts and fine dining emporiums pop up. Foodies will adore the range of gourmet experiences available, from chef’s tables to trendy fusion fare to cultural cooking classes taught by locals featuring locally sourced ingredients. There's even a swank Miami-style beach club and upscale downtown supper club. Bonaire has been very busy blossoming of late to entice many different types of travelers to come to its shores. And with year-round temps in the 80s and very little rain, there's no bad time to visit.

Bonaire Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Bonaire is from May to October when there are fewer crowds and bargain hotel rates compared to the popular winter season. If you're planning a winter getaway, keep in mind that November through April comprises the island's peak season, however, the island is also popular with families from the Netherlands for summer holidays, too. Luckily, Bonaire's temperate climate and unique location, just north of the equator and safely outside the hurricane belt, pose little threat of tropical storms, no matter the season. The "rainy season" generally lasts from December through March, but showers are usually brief and should not deter you from visiting.

What You Need to Know

Budget for the Visitor Entry Tax As of July 2022, all nonresident visitors ages 13 years and older must pay a $75 Visitor Entry Tax to support the island’s infrastructure, tourism products, environmental efforts and education. The fee for children 12 years and younger is $10. You can pay the tax online in advance of your trip here. You can also pay it at the airport upon arrival (but keep in mind that cash is not accepted at the airport; debit or credit cards only).

You’ll have no trouble communicating Though the official languages are Dutch and Papiamentu – a Creole dialect with Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese elements – English is widely spoken by locals, as is Spanish.

The beaches are different here Apart from No Name Beach, Sorobon and a few private resort beaches, Bonaire does not boast the long strands of soft, white silky sand you might encounter on other Caribbean islands. Most of Bonaire’s “beaches” are coral-strewn coves with rocky entrances to the water. But where there are rocks, there are usually lots of fish! To protect your feet, it’s wise to have water shoes handy for impromptu dips. One unique beach called Boka Kokolishi even has black sand made from the crushed shells of tiny snails.

How to Save Money in Bonaire

Visit in the offseason Take advantage of discounted hotel prices and lower airfares by timing your trip for the offseason, which runs from May to October.

Consider a bed-and-breakfast or a small boutique hotel One of Bonaire’s best-kept secrets is the number of glamorous, multibedroom villas and deluxe short-term apartment and house rentals it has to offer at reasonable prices. Many of these accommodations are right on the water or have their own pools. For a vast selection of options, consider Sun Rentals Bonaire .

Rent a golf cart If you’d like to explore the island on your own, but don’t have the budget for a rental car, consider renting a golf cart instead. You’ll feel the ocean breeze in your hair and pay significantly less than you would for a car.

Culture & Customs

Defined by its unique colonial heritage, Bonaire possesses a separate identity from the neighboring alphabet islands of Aruba and Curaçao . Today, the economy relies on tourism, especially dive tourism, but salt production has always been an important part of the island's economic identity, too. To this day, Bonaire exports a million pounds of sea salt per year, mostly to North America as a foil for icy roads and other industrial uses.

When discussing the island’s history of salt production, it’s important to acknowledge the role of slavery. The enslaved peoples who were relegated to work the salt pans from the 1600s until slavery was abolished in 1863 were brought from Africa by the Dutch West India Company. Like many Caribbean islands, the early colonial rule had a brutal history. There are stone slave huts still on prominent display at the different colored obelisks where the salt was to be picked up by Dutch ships. They were purposely restored and are maintained to remind new generations and visitors of the resilience of today’s residents. Many Bonaireans are direct descendants of these enslaved people, who through necessity formed a strong community. They developed their own creative ways of survival while forming a unique culture with many celebrations, customs, traditions and cuisine that are unique to this island. You’ll see many of these traditions on display during the island’s important annual festivals like Simadan, which marks the traditional celebration of harvest time.

The U.S. dollar is Bonaire's official currency, so there's no need to worry about conversion rates. Most credit cards can be used on the island, though American Express is not as widely accepted as MasterCard and Visa. There are a few ATMs in high traffic areas and in the casinos, and in some resorts, too. Bonaire's standard tipping practices are similar to the U.S.; it's typical to leave an additional 10 to 15% in gratuity for waiters and taxi drivers.

Getting Around Bonaire

The best way to get around Bonaire is by car. Because Bonaire is so small, it's easy to drive the island's entire coastline in just one day. Renting your own set of wheels is also the easiest way to reach most diving spots, and you'll need rugged vehicles with trunks to transport your tanks and gear, and four-wheel-drive to reach off-rader shore dives. You'll find most of the island's rental companies at the Bonaire International Airport (BON), but many large resorts now have their own “drive and stay” or “dive and drive” packages on site as well that include vehicle rentals.

The Bonaire International Airport welcomes direct flights from New York, Houston, Atlanta and Miami. The airport is located near Kralendijk on the west coast of the island. If you’re not renting a car, you can reach your accommodations via taxi; there’s a taxi stand at the airport.

Entry & Exit Requirements

American citizens must present a passport prior to entry, as well as proof of a return flight or continued travel. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. Department of State's website .

How Bonaire future-proofed its tourism development plan

Project description, tourism bonaire.

“As CEO of Tourism Corporation Bonaire , I am often confronted with questions such as, ‘How’s the season picking up?’, ‘How are we ranked vs other competitors?’, or ‘What’s our air service capacity like for the summer?’. I can now confidently showcase our direction and performance based on real-time data that is monitored and shared via ForwardKeys,” says Mile Mercera.

Miles Mercera CEO Tourism Bonaire

The background

Bonaire is an island in the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Kralendijk, near the ocean on the lee side of the island. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao form the ABC islands, 80 km (50 miles) off the coast of Venezuela.

Unlike much of the Caribbean region, the ABC islands lie outside Hurricane Alley. The islands have an arid climate that attracts visitors seeking warm, sunny weather all year round. Bonaire is a popular snorkelling and scuba-diving destination because of its multiple shore-diving sites and easy access to the island’s fringing reefs.

Tourism is the largest sector within Bonaire’s economy. In the CBS study “Trends in the Caribbean Netherlands 2019”, tourism represents approximately 38.4% of the economy. Many people work in tourism or one of its contributing sectors.

The Challenge

Information gaps hindering tourism development strategies

Tourism Bonaire was struggling information gaps that were hindering their business planning and tourism development strategies.

Future-proofing new ideas presented a challenge as it was led more by instinct than by scientific facts. Traditionally, the tourism organisation had planned campaigns based on historical data.

“Data is key; without it, we can’t strategise and plan. The partnership with ForwardKeys is just what we needed as it covers several areas including demographic profiles, segmentation, and seasonality. Most importantly, it provides us with the insight to anticipate market changes,” says Miles Mercera, CEO of Tourism Corporation Bonaire.

Now, Tourism Bonaire can forecast based on real-time, forward-looking data. “We see it not only as a resource but as a lifeline for all our tourism performance and data needs,” he adds.

The Proposal

Insights and data on secondary and new markets

ForwardKeys provided insights and data on the secondary markets as well as the new markets that the tourist board was keen to venture into.

“One of our goals for this chapter in tourism is to reposition the island. Exploring new markets can only be done with the data received from ForwardKeys. This is how we can see and analyse potential opportunities from areas in the world that previously we never evaluated as a potential source market,” says Mercera.

“Our aim at ForwardKeys has always been to help our DMO customers overcome their challenges and better plan their tourism strategies with data-based decisions,” says Lorena Garcia-Elices, Customer Success Manager at ForwardKeys.

“With access to Destination Gateway, Bonaire has at its fingertips the possibility not only to understand how the destination is performing among the markets and travel audiences of its interest but also to assess how it compares with its competitors. The ability to access this type of information regularly on an easy-to-use dashboard is something the tourism organisation values greatly,” she adds.

Easy-to-access real-time data to facilitate performance monitoring

“As CEO of Tourism Corporation Bonaire , I am often confronted with questions such as, ‘How’s the season picking up?’, ‘How are we ranked vs other competitors?’, or ‘What’s our air service capacity like for the summer?’. I can now confidently showcase our direction and performance based on real-time data that is monitored and shared via ForwardKeys,” says Miles Mercera.

The tools supplied by ForwardKeys are straightforward to work with, while the ForwardKeys Customer Success team and analysts are available around the clock for any technical support or questions.

“I am looking forward to our continued long-term collaboration with ForwardKeys, accomplishing the results yet to be achieved as there are more great things in the pipeline,” Mercera concludes.

Bonaire Miss Universe: A triumphal return after 25 years

Bonaire returns to the Miss Universe stage after 25 years, showcasing its rich culture and commitment to sustainability. Discover how this small Caribbean gem uses the global platform to strengthen its international presence and promote its unique values.

After a long hiatus, Bonaire is set to make a vibrant return to the global stage. Namely at the Miss Universe 2024 pageant. This move marks a significant milestone for this small Caribbean gem. However not only that but it also showcases its rich culture and commitment to diversity and sustainability.

Bonaire’s journey to Miss Universe 2024

Securing the stage.

The Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) has played a pivotal role in regaining the license necessary for participation. This comes as a part of a broader strategy to enhance Bonaire’s visibility on the world stage. Leveraging events like Miss Universe to promote tourism in this Dutch overseas territory.

Historical context

Interestingly, Bonaire has not competed in the Miss Universe pageant since 1999. Their previous forays in 1998 and 1999 set a precedent for participation, which makes the 2024 return not just a comeback but a renewal of its historical association with this prestigious competition.

 Why the long absence?

Bonaire’s unique status as a special municipality within the Netherlands has led to various economic and political shifts. This has impacted its participation in international events like Miss Universe. The focus had shifted more towards local development and less on international exposure.

Goals for returning to Miss Universe

Bonaire’s return to Miss Universe is driven by several compelling goals:

– Showcasing natural beauty and culture: Bonaire is eager to present its rich cultural heritage and the pristine natural environment to a global audience.

– Strengthening international relations: Participation in such a global event is a key step towards enhancing Bonaire’s international presence.

– Promoting diversity and sustainability: Bonaire aims to use this platform to broadcast its commitment to sustainable practices and cultural diversity.

 Preparations for the big event

TCB is actively working to ensure that Miss Bonaire’s participation is flawless. The preparations involve thorough training sessions, wardrobe fittings, and cultural briefings to ensure that the representative not only shines but also authentically represents Bonaire’s spirit.

Event details

Drawing participants from over 90 countries, Miss Universe 2024 is scheduled to be held in Mexico this September. This setting provides a vibrant backdrop suitable for celebrating the diversity and beauty that the Miss Universe pageant is known for.

 What Bonaire stands to gain

Bonaire’s participation in Miss Universe 2024 is more than just a beauty pageant entry; it’s a strategic move aimed at:

– Boosting tourism: Highlighting Bonaire as a travel destination through the extensive coverage of the Miss Universe pageant.

– Cultural exchange: Providing a platform for cultural exchange and fostering goodwill among nations.

– Economic benefits: Enhancing the local economy through increased global visibility and subsequent tourism.

In conclusion, Bonaire’s return to the Miss Universe stage is a testament to its renewed focus on global engagement and cultural presentation. The island’s participation in Miss Universe 2024 not only aims to reintroduce its unique charm to the world but also to forge paths in promoting its ideals of diversity and environmental consciousness. Keep an eye on this exciting chapter of Bonaire’s journey in the world of pageantry, where beauty transcends appearances to include the beauty of a community’s spirit and values.

It’s about to get easier — and more comfortable — to get to Puerto Rico and elsewhere in the Caribbean with a significant JetBlue expansion in the region.

Starting in October, the carrier will launch flights to and from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and six new destinations, including Providence, Rhode Island, Westchester, New York, and Cancun, according to JetBlue . With the new flights, JetBlue will now fly to a total of 18 destinations from Puerto Rico.

“JetBlue has been a proud part of the Puerto Rican community for over twenty years, and we're excited to deepen our roots with this expansion," Marty St. George, the president of JetBlue, said in a statement. “Our decades-long history with this vibrant community drives our enthusiasm to not only increase our service but also to strengthen our relationships and presence in the region. We are excited to continue growing alongside the Puerto Rican community, ensuring that JetBlue remains a key partner in connecting the people of Puerto Rico."

With the expansion, JetBlue will launch flights to and from San Juan from:

  • Providence, RI; once per day starting Oct. 27
  • Westchester County, NY; once per day starting Oct. 27
  • Santiago, Dominican Republic; once per day starting Oct. 28
  • Medellín, Colombia; four times per week starting Oct. 29
  • Cancun, Mexico; three times per week starting Oct. 28
  • St. Croix, USVI; once per day starting Dec. 12

In addition, the airline will enhance its luxury offering to the island, introducing its business class Mint cabin for the first time on flights between San Juan and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in July. JetBlue’s Mint experience includes lie-flat seats, menus from New York City restaurants Pasquale Jones, Charlie Bird, and Legacy Records, and Tuft & Needle bedding.

To celebrate, JetBlue is offering one-way flights starting at just $29 from San Juan to St. Croix, starting at $79 to Providence, starting at $89 to Santiago or Westchester; and starting at $99 to Medellín or Cancun. The airline is also offering Mint fares from New York starting at just $399 one-way. To take advantage, travelers must book by May 10. Travel and blackout dates vary by destination.

Beyond Puerto Rico, JetBlue will expand its presence on other Caribbean islands with new flights from New York to both St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Bonaire in the fall, as well as resume daily service between San Juan and St. Croix in December.

Miles Mercera, the CEO at Tourism Corporation Bonaire, told Travel + Leisure he was “elated” travelers “will now have more options from this key US hub to easily discover all that our Caribbean gem has to offer.”
