Offbeat Landmarks

budapest river cruises

South of Liberty Bridge are two nice-to-see-but-not-obligatory landmarks, the National Theatre (below) and the Palace of Arts (above), which are as beautiful as the Parliament and Buda Castle.

Some cruises, like Legenda, Hungaria Koncert and Silverline, have a complete itinerary that includes these offbeat landmarks. ‍ ‍

1. Best Sightseeing Cruise Overall With Welcome Drink and Audio Guide

The illuminated Budapest Parliament at night, from the perspective of a Danube river cruise.

✔️ Best All-Around  — This cruise has it all for a complete sightseeing experience.

✔️ Welcome Drink  — Choose champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink, or mineral water.

✔️ Great Ship  — Modern, spacious, and well-kept, offering superb views from both decks.

✔️ Audio Guide  — Crystal-clear sound quality via headphones, and available in 30 languages.

✔️ Full Danube Curcuit  — Covers all the must-see and off-beat landmarks, from Margaret Island to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️ Family Friendly - Generous discounts for children, including free tickets for ages 0-9 and 50% for ages 10-14.

❌  Pricy  — It's a bit more expensive than other cruises, but the added value makes up for it.

❌  Missing Free Lemonade  — It's not highlighted that the free lemonade is only offered in the summer season.

❌  Headphone Challenges and Hiccups  — The first pair didn't work, the second had a cable that was too short for my height (I'm 190cm), and the third functional pair lacked optimal comfort.

💡 Tip: All cruises have a generous cancellation policy , allowing a full refund if canceled 24 hours before the activity. Additionally, they offer a reserve now, pay later flexible payment scheme.

Legenda's river cruise offers a complete sightseeing experience with a  welcome drink  and an  audio guide in 30 languages.

Audio guide languages include: English, German, French, Italian, Croatian, Dutch, Hungarian, Hebrew, Arabic, Latvian, Finnish, Turkish, Russian, Portuguese, Estonian, Chinese, Thai, Romanian, Korean, Danish, Greek, Swedish, Slovenian, Japanese, Czech, Norwegian, Slovak, Polish, Lithuanian, Spanish.

Their  ship is modern and spacious , providing excellent views from both decks.

The  itinerary covers the iconic sights from Margaret Island to the National Theatre and Palace of Arts.

This cruise is  pricy but offers more value that backs up the higher price. The audio guide has clear sound quality through headphones but needs improvement in content quality and headphone comfort.

Overall, this cruise provides a  high-quality sightseeing experience with no major negatives , which is why it's number one on this list.

About Legenda City Cruises

Legenda is the oldest and most reputable cruise company in Budapest. They’ve been operating since (at least) 1990 and are still going strong.

Detailed Breakdown

Sightseeing & views.

The illuminated Budapest Palace and Buda side at night, from the perspective of a Danube river cruise.

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The  best spot for sightseeing  on this cruise is the  top deck .
  • The cruise itinerary covers all of Budapest's landmarks, including the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.
💡 Tip:  For the best sightseeing and photo opportunities , choose a ship with large open-air decks that offer unobstructed 360° views like Legenda, Rubin Group, and Portum.

  • The Gondola is a modern vessel that offers spacious seating, openable windows during the summer, a bar, an audio guide with headphones, and AC/heating.

  • The cruise kicks off with receiving a complimentary welcome drink – choose from champagne, wine, beer, a soft drink, or mineral water. You also get to enjoy an extra free lemonade in the summer season.

The Lower Deck

The interior of Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • The lower deck has a cozy bar at the back, near the stairs to the top deck. Rows of comfy seats offer plenty of room to move about, and the large windows guarantee fantastic views .

The Upper Deck

The top deck of Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • It's spacious with unobstructed 360° views from every angle. Ideal for photography and soaking in the city's beauty. Blankets are available upon request.

The Audio Guide

The audio guide controller and headphones on Legenda City Cruises' sightseeing boat.

  • This was the only audio guide could actually be heard out of all the cruises, thanks to the headphones, as the other ships have loudspeakers.
  • The audio quality was excellent , and the narration was available in 30 languages.
  • There's room for improvement contentwise. Around half of the mentioned sights aren't relevant to riverside attractions. Plus, the c ontent could dive deeper into the city's history, culture, and be more historically correct instead of telling stories, trivia and myths.
  • I encountered some issues with the headphones - the first set was defective, the second set had a cable that was too short, and the third set was uncomfortable and hard to wear.
💡 All the other cruises offer loudspeaker audio guides. Loudspeaker audio guides are often inaudible due to passenger noise. Other common issues include un-synced commentary, irrelevant sights/details mentioned, and infrequent audio.

2. Budapest Night Booze Cruise with Unlimited Prosecco and Lemonade

A row of glasses with prosecco on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

✔️  #1 Most Affordable Booze Cruise  — Experience Budapest's most economical unlimited prosecco cruise on the Danube.

✔️  Excellent Ship — The ship features a charming open-air top deck and two indoor decks with a sophisticated cocktail party-like ambiance.

✔️  Unlimited Drinks  — Drink all the prosecco and lemonade you want.

✔️  Leisurely 90-Minute Ride  — More than enough time to savor your drinks, though drinking responsibly is advised by your friends at Prosecco and Co.

❌ Mediocre Food Platter — For an extra 10€, the food platter is disappointing and hardly qualifies as 'gourmet.'

❌ Remote Meeting Point — The departure area near Margaret Island is not easily accessible.

❌ Inaudible Audio Guide — The ambient noise from passengers drowns out the audio guide, but most are too busy enjoying their drinks to notice.

❓ Is buying food or drinks while on a river cruise in Budapest possible? 💡 Food is not typically included on standard sightseeing cruises. However, you can purchase snacks and drinks at the ship's kitchen bar.

The Rubin Group's boat tour is an excellent choice for those seeking an affordable cocktail-party atmosphere with unlimited prosecco and lemonade. The attentive servers are always on hand to keep guests' glasses full.

The top deck boasts breathtaking 360° views of the cityscape during the 90-minute river cruise, while the two indoor decks offer a cozy and inviting ambiance.

As for the less rosy aspects of this cruise, the optional food platter isn't worth the 10€ price, and the audio guide may be difficult to hear over the party noise. Additionally, the meeting point is further from the city center, so getting there may take some extra time and effort.

Overall, if you're looking for a leisurely cruise centered around drinks and stunning views, Rubin Group's boat tour is an outstanding choice.

🎥 Video : Watch this Youtube video I made of Rubin Group's unlimited prosecco cruise. 📷 Instagram : Check out reels and photos of Rubin Group.

About Rubin Group

Rubin Group   is another solid company, operating since (at least) 2015. They specialize in gastro-themed events rather than standard sightseeing cruises.

Rubin Group's booze cruise ship, with guests waiting to board on the right.

  • The ship was impressive with a spacious 3-level design and a cocktail party atmosphere . Passengers were seated at 2-person tables .

The Top Deck

The illuminated Liberty Bridge Citadel Statue on Gellért Hill at night, from the perspective of Rubin Group's booze cruise.

  • The top deck offered stunning, unobstructed 360° views . It was the perfect spot for taking photos and enjoying the sights . This is the best place to be during the warmer months.

‍ The Mid and Bottom Deck

The interior of Rubin Group's booze cruise with guests enjoying themselves.

  • There are two indoor decks with  plenty of seats and tables  where the atmosphere is  cozy and inviting .
  • The first passengers to board tend to get the best top deck spots, so it's  worth arriving early   if you want a prime spot .

The interior of Rubin Group's booze cruise with guests enjoying themselves.

The Drinks Refills

  • The  servers were   attentive , constantly  refilling glasses  with prosecco as soon as they were empty.
  • Self-service lemonade  is available in two flavors — regular and one with a strange cucumber taste.

The Assorted Food Platter

Assorted food platter on Rubin Group's booze cruise.

  • The optional assorted food platter for 10€ wasn't what I was expecting.
  • It didn't match the advertised images and wasn't gourmet but ordinary , including simple fruits and vegetables, cheese and ham with two sauces, and a pastry dessert. The portion size was smaller than expected.
  • Save your money and skip the platter.
  • The loudspeaker  audio guide was inaudible  due to the passengers crowding out the narration.
  • They increased the volume upon my request, but the  audio guide's content was too basic .
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00 and 21:00
  • ❌ Pets allowed: no, except service animals
  • ❌ Wheelchair accessible: no
  • ✔️ Baby stroller accessible: yes (at least the bottom deck)
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-3)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Szent István park 5, 1137
  • ❌ The meeting point is north of Margaret Bridge , which is slightly out of the way compared to other centrally located cruises.
  • 🗺️ Use the 2 or 4/6 tram line  and get off at Jászai Mari tér . From there, walk 500 meters towards the north of Margaret Bridge until you spot a large red "0" sign .

3. Historic 19th Century Steam Boat Cruise

budapest river cruises

❓ Should I book river cruise tickets in advance? Is it worth it? 💡 Yes  — It's worth reserving your ticket in advance to ensure your place on the ship, although you can purchase tickets in person.

This is Budapest's only boat tour offering an authentic 19th-century historic cruise experience . The ship is a replica of the Hungarian paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, which operated between 1847 and 1887 on Lake Balaton thanks to the initiative of István Széchenyi.

The cruise includes a welcome drink and an English audio guide (via loudspeakers).

The ship features an open-air panorama deck at the front (the best place for 360° views), a semi-covered rear area , and a small top deck near the captain's cabin.

There's also a must-see maritime museum on the bottom deck.

In summary, this cruise provides a high-quality sightseeing experience infused with historic flair you can't get elsewhere in Budapest.

🎥 Virtual tour: take a look at the ship through their interactive virtual tour .

About Dunai Sétahajózási Ltd.

Dunai Sétahajózási Kft. was founded in 2021 by Gergely Fogasy, who also operates a successful cruise company on Lake Balaton since 2019.

budapest river cruises

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. The best spot for sightseeing on this cruise is the front panorama deck , where you board the ship.

budapest river cruises

  • The boat tour offers an authentic historical experience aboard a replica of a 19th-century paddle steamer , the Kisfaludy, that once sailed Lake Balaton.

19th Century Maritime Museum

  • On the lower deck, there is a captivating maritime museum that displays the lifestyle of 19th century sailors .

budapest river cruises

  • The cruise includes a complimentary welcome drink of your choice - water, prosecco, orange juice or beer.

budapest river cruises

  • The small top deck has four tables , but the chimney and captain's cabin somewhat block the view .
  • The orientation of half the tables is perpendicular to the Danube, so one side of the city is always behind your back . The main deck doesn't have this issue.

The Main Deck

budapest river cruises

  • The main deck has a front open-air area with a 360° panorama . Additionally, there is a roof-covered rear area with equally splendid views.

budapest river cruises

  • You can take a closer look at the paddle wheel in the middle or visit the maritime museum on the bottom deck.
  • You can also find free umbrellas , which they likely hand out during rainy weather.
  • During the cruise, you can enjoy an English-speaking audio guide through loudspeakers.
  • The guide was synchronized with the attractions we passed by and provided brief introductions, trivia, and historical information about the landmarks.
  • Sometimes loudspeakers can get drowned out by the noise of a crowd, which makes them hard to hear. I didn't experience this during my daytime cruise, but it may be more challenging to hear during the more popular night cruise .
  • In between the narration, there's a pleasant classical piano music playing.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 7:00pm, 8:30pm, 10:00pm.
  • ❌ Air conditioning/heating: no
  • ✔️ Pets allowed: yes
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-6)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest Jane Henning rakpart 10, Dock 10, 1052
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér or Március 15 tér stop . Go towards Elizabeth bridge (white suspension bridge) and look for Duna Cruises .

4. Best Value Sightseeing Cruise With Welcome Drink

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Exceptional Value  — Costs 40-50% less than Legenda, while still offering a stellar experience, albeit with fewer non-essential amenities (such as audio guides and complimentary lemonade).

✔️  Fun and Lively — This cruise attracts a younger crowd, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

✔️  Welcome Drink  — Options include prosecco, a seasonal cocktail, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

✔️ Great Ship  — The ship is modern, spacious, and well-maintained, with excellent views from both its decks.

❌  Inconvenient Location  — The meeting point near Margaret Island is not in the city center, thus getting there is a hassle.

❌  Prone to Crowding — The ship may feel cramped during peak travel times, especially the top deck.

❌  Limited Open Air Seats  — The coveted open-air tables on the top deck are claimed quickly and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

❓  Is it possible to reserve seats on river cruises? 💡 Seats on most river cruises are assigned on a  first-come, first-served  basis. But some dinner cruises might let you reserve a specific spot.

Portum Lines Cruising is an excellent  alternative to Legenda , offering a  lively and fun  sightseeing experience that's especially  popular with younger crowds .

Upon arrival, guests receive a  complimentary welcome drink of  prosecco, seasonal cocktails, mulled wine, or a soft drink.

While they  don't offer  amenities like an  audio guide or complimentary lemonade , the ship is modern and well-maintained, with  excellent views  of Budapest's top sights.

The  top deck  offers both open-air 360° and weather-protected roof-covered sections. While the  lower level  is cozy and comfortable, it's  best to head upstairs  to enjoy the views.

Reaching the  meeting point is inconvenient , and the  ship can get crowded  due to its popularity, especially on the top deck.

Overall, Portum Lines offers an  exceptional river cruise  experience at  great value , perfect for those seeking a fun atmosphere.

About Portum Lines

Portum Lines is a solid company operating since (at least) 2014. Their offerings are pretty slim compared to others but still superb in quality.

The Budapest Parliament during the day, from the perspective of Portum Lines Crusing's sightseeing cruise.

  • During the boat tour, you can enjoy the flawless cityscape of Budapest from certain spots with clear 360° views .
  • The cruise itinerary covers most of Budapest's landmarks, except the National Opera and the Palace of Arts.

  • The ship is spacious and well-maintained , with two levels similar to Legenda's sightseeing ship.

  • The top deck is divided into three areas - the front, middle, and back.
  • The front and back sections are open-air , with perfect 360° views - these are the best places to be.
💡 Tip: The best open air seats go fast! You must arrive early and be at the front of the line to snatch them.

  • There is a wide indoor section in the middle with tables and chairs lining both sides near the windows.
  • Although the views from here are good, they are even better outside in the open air section.

  • The lower level is comfortable, cozy, and spacious, with heating and air conditioning to provide a pleasant experience, even on rainy or cold days.
  • The lower deck is an indoor space similar to the upper deck's covered section.
  • Additionally, there is a small bar on board.

5. No Frills Budget Sightseeing Cruise

budapest river cruises

When it comes to Budapest cruises, Silverline Sightseeing Cruise is a solid choice with friendly staff and a comfortable meeting point, but it doesn't quite stand out from the crowd.

Unlike most cruises, Silverline's cruise ticket does not include a welcome drink . However, the price is on the low-end . If it were not for their out-of-the-way location, I would recommend the Portum's similarly cheap cruise in a heartbeat.

With a relaxed 70-minute cruising time, this ride offers a leisurely pace that allows you to take in the sights and enjoy the moment.

They used to offer an audio guide , but it suffered from the common issue of being drowned out by the crowd's noise and not being in sync with the landmarks. They seem to have done away with it altogether.

In summary, Silverline's sightseeing cruise provides a leisurely tour of Budapest's iconic landmarks on the Danube. While not exceptional, it offers a decent experience.

About Silverline Cruises Ltd.

Silverline is a solid company operating since (at least) 2011. They have a decent range of cruise offerings, and run popular cruises in the sightseeing category.

budapest river cruises

  • Like on any boat tour in Budapest, the cityscape is breathtaking throughout the trip. However, Silverline's ships have a roof and support columns on the top deck which means they do not provide a clear 360° view .

budapest river cruises

  • The ship itself is decent , but it doesn't claim the title of the most modern or spacious vessel on the waters. It gets the job done without being overly impressive.
  • Silverline rotates boats frequently, so you may not get the same one I did.

budapest river cruises

  • During my trip, I was on the larger two-level boat that previously had rows of seats, but has since been replaced with tables and chairs (according to photos).
  • The smaller boat now has the rows of seats , which I found to be cramped and lacking in legroom .
  • Both ships have roofs and support columns which partially block the view .

budapest river cruises

  • The main deck offers comfort with ample space, heating, and air conditioning . While indoor views are average , better panoramas await at the front chairs or the open-air section.
  • Welcoming and friendly staff at the entrance make a positive impression. I haven't interacted with the ship's crew so I cannot comment on that.

Unneccesary Stop

  • During my cruise, we made a stop at Batthyány tér (Buda) , even though no passengers got on or off.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, 9:00pm.
  • ✔️Air conditioning/heating: yes
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest Jane Henning rakpart 10, Dock 11, 1052
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér or Március 15 tér stop . Go towards Elizabeth bridge (white suspension bridge) and look for Silverline Cruises .

6. Best Cocktail Cruise With Three Cocktails

budapest river cruises

Enjoy a 90-minute cocktail cruise on the Danube with Silverline. Sip up to three delicious cocktails as you cruise aboard a cozy, spacious double-decker ship with splendid views.

As usual, the  itinerary  covers all the iconic sights from Margaret Island to the National Theatre and Palace of Arts.

While there is no audio guide on board, you can download Silverline's audio guide app . There's a lack of shelter from the elements while boarding, but it's not a big deal (unless you're caught in bad weather).

Overall, a great experience to try in Budapest!

🎥 Video: Take a look at the teaser video for the cruise to get an idea of what to expect.
💡 Keep in mind that the this cruise, the Pizza & Beer cruise and an Unlimited Drink Cruise are happening at the same time and place.

  • The scenery is breathtaking and you're taken all the way down to the Palace of Arts & National Theatre .

  • For the best views, head to the top deck . However, taking great photos can be challenging due to the roof and side columns obstructing the view.

8. Budapest Dinner Cruise with Buffet Libre, Folk Dance Show & Music

The dinner area of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves.

✔️  Buffet Libre  — this dinner cruise is a great way to taste various Hungarian dishes.

✔️  Two Welcome Drinks  — you can choose from various alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.

✔️  Great Atmosphere  — you feel like you're in an early 20th century cabaret and forget about the outside world for 2 hours.

✔️  Folk Dance and Music Show  — features one of the best live folklore music and dance shows with authentic and award-winning performers.

✔️  Full Danube Circuit  — the cruise covers everything worth seeing, from Margaret Island all the way down to the National Theatre/Palace of Arts.

✔️  Long Cruise  — the cruise lasts 1.5-2 hours, which gives ample time to eat, drink and see the sights at night.

❌  Not Great for Sightseeing  — the views from the ship are mediocre (no 360°, fences blocking the view), spaces for sightseeing are both few/small, the dinner and folk show are more interesting so you'll focus on that and won't see the sights.

❌  Not Fine Dining Quality  — the food is fine, but mid-range restaurants (and up) serve better quality food.

Hungaria Koncert runs this excellent dinner cruise with live Hungarian folk music and dance performance.

There's an unlimited buffet of various Hungarian dishes and a vibe that’s comparable to an early 20th century cabaret.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with live footage of Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise.

About Hungaria Koncert

Hungaria Koncert is a cruise operator and organizes different touristic activities. They've been operating since (at least) 1995.

Cruise Duration

  • This cruise lasts 1.5 or 2 hours depending on which cruise you choose — 7 pm or 10 pm . This gives ample time to enjoy the delicious food, the unique folk performance, and explore the ship.

What's Included

Two Hungaria folk dancers on Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise coming up the stairs.

  • You get to enjoy the show of award-winning music and dance performers who are going to give you an amazing time.

Laid table with cutlery and food on Hungaria Koncert's dinner cruise.

  • ‍ You get access to a buffet libre of a variety of Hungarian dishes . Meals include goulash soup, stuffed cabbage, beef stew, somlói Galuska, a variety of strudels, and more.
  • The quality of the food is good but isn’t Michelin 2-star grade. Even so, it’s a great way to try out a variety of Hungarian dishes at once.

Dance and Music Performance

Hungarian folk music performers entertaining guests with violin music on Hugaria Koncert's cruise boat.

  • On the top deck, there are folklore dance and music performances for dinner guests only.
  • The music gave the trip an early 20th century cabaret vibe .

Guests waiting in line to board Gróf Széchenyi river cruise ship.

  • The interior of the ship has a classical and luxurious feel , including chandeliers, a teak wood interior, custom-made floor carpet, intarsia decorated walls, and more.

The dinner area of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves from the outside looking in through the windows.

  • There are two symmetrical indoor sections on the top deck and a total of four outdoor areas - two on the sides and two at each end of the ship.

The openair section of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise ship on the top deck.

  • The outdoor side areas are available for sightseeing guests; the rest of the level is reserved for dinner guests.
  • T he sides have 180° views , while the front and back are 360° , but fences obstruct the view.

The interior of Hungaria Koncert's river cruise boat with guests enjoying themselves.

  • The lower deck has the same look and feel as the rest of the ship. There is only one area accessible - immediately to the right of the entrance. This area is for people with non-dinner tickets. It includes a bar with reasonable prices, tables with chairs, and a folklore trio performance.
  • 📅 Schedule: every day at 19:00, and on weekends at 22:00
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-5)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Budapest, Id. Antall József rkp., 1051
  • 🗺️ Use tram line 2 to arrive at Széchenyi István tér stop.  You can find Hungaria Koncert next to Széchenyi Chain bridge.
💡 Pricing 55€ vs. 72€ — What's the difference? Those with a regular dinner cruise ticket (55€) won't be able to see the folk dance show - they need to buy the 72€ ticket if they do. There's nothing stopping you from going over to the other side for a sneak peek, though.

9. Best Cocktails, Craft Beer or Wine Tasting Cruise

Hungarian folk music performers entertaining guests with violin music on Hugaria Koncert's cruise boat.

I have already mentioned the dinner cruise offered by Hungaria Koncert above.

However, they also offer a more affordable boat tour with drinks , which takes place on the same ship.

The only difference is that this event is on the ship's lower deck and features a live folk violin trio to entertain you.

There is also an open-air area where you can drink and enjoy spending time.

The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink . You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .

The atmosphere is reminiscent of an early 20th-century cabaret.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with footage of Hungaria Koncert's cruise. Even though this is about their dinner cruise, you'll be on the same vessel.

Indoor Area

  • The bottom deck area has the same 20th-century cabaret feel as the rest of the ship.

Outdoor Area

  • The sides of the view offer 180° views, so unfortunately you can't see both Buda and Pest at the same time.

budapest river cruises

  • The basic ticket is reasonably priced and includes a drink .
  • You can also upgrade to options offering craft beer, cocktails, exquisite wines, or even unlimited drinks .
  • If you buy the more expensive tickets you will be seated upstairs in the dinner guest area instead of slightly less luxurious bottom deck area.

10. Cheapest Sightseeing Cruise

The Budapest Palace during the day, from the perspective of Mahart-BKK's sightseeing cruise.

✔️  Cheapest Cruise in Budapest  — perfect for travelers that value affordability.

✔️  Unlimited Cruises  — for the same day with one ticket, excellent in case you have the urge to binge cruise in Budapest.

✔️  Great for Getting Around  — there's an option to disembark on Margaret Island or at any of the four other stops.

❌  Low Quality  — I'm not mincing words here, this is a bare-bones, low-quality sightseeing cruise.

❌  Smell of Fuel   — a strange smell is often present on the boat.

❌  Five Stops  — the boat docks and undocks 5 times during the cruise, which isn't fun.

❌ Crowded —  the ship is small and cramped to begin with but wait till the Hungarian pupils on school trips arrive.

‍ Update: This boat tour is only available during the summer season.

A dirt-cheap sightseeing cruise that ranks low in quality compared to other options. Great if you're on an  extremely  tight budget.

Note that this cruise does not have public reviews, as it is a public service boat service operated by a government-owned company (Mahart). Tickets must be purchased on the spot and cannot be reserved in advance.

🎥 Video: Watch my video summary with live footage of BK-Mahart's sightseeing cruise.

Detailed breakdown

BKK-Mahart's sightseeing boat.

  • It seemed old and in need of renovation.

The top deck with rows of seating on Mahart-BKKs's sightseeing boat.

  • Poor seat layout , crowded, partial view due to roof and side columns. It wasn't too crowded when I went, so it was acceptable.

The Bottom Deck

The interior of BKK-Mahart's sightseeing boat.

  • The smell of gas/fuel , poor seat layout, dim lighting, mediocre views, and uncomfortable seat cushions.

5 Stops During the Cruise

Embarking/disembarking on Mahart-BKKs's sightseeing boat.

  • The ship makes 5 stops , which takes away from the experience, but allows for a drop-off at Margaret Island . The smell of gas intensified during docking.

No Pre-Booking Available

  • It is not possible to book this cruise in advance, but tickets can be purchased in person at the BKK-Mahart kiosk .
  • 📅 Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00 (don't go on Mondays like I did!)
  • ❌ Onboard wi-fi: no
  • ❌ Wheelchair accessible: yes
  • ❌ Baby stroller accessible: yes
  • ✔️ Infant/children discount: free for children (age 0-7)
  • 📍 Meeting point: Batthyány tér - Vigadó tér, 1051 Budapest
  • 🗺️ How to get there: Use tram line 2 to arrive at Március 15.  You can find Mahart ticket booth in front of you after you descend the stairs at Vigado tér. The boat will be the left from it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i prepare for a river cruise during the winter or summer.

Summer: Have sunscreen, water, an umbrella, and sunglasses for daytime cruises in the warmer months.

In rainy weather, the open-air deck may be closed. In stormy weather, cruises are canceled. They'll either refund you or offer an alternative cruise if this happens. ‍

Winter: The heated cabin's windows tend to fog up, blocking the views, depending on how well the windows are insulated.

You can always go out to get a few photo shots, then rush back to the safety of the heated cabin. Open-air sightseeing during the winter can be less enjoyable due to cold weather and winds, so it's best to dress warmly, wear layers, and protect your face.

How can I avoid overcrowded boat tours?

If you want to avoid crowded boat tours, you can follow these steps: visit during the off-season, choose daytime tours instead of night tours, or opt for more expensive cruises.

Budapest river cruises, about budapest.

Hungary’s fascinating and culturally immersive capital is separated into its component ‘Buda’ and ‘Pest’ sides by the Danube River and is a mainstay of practically all river cruises which explore this iconic waterway. Buda’s home to the majority of the city’s historical attractions, while Pest is a more lively and cosmopolitan counterpart. Budapest is one of Europe’s largest cities, packed full of elegant attractions and iconic landmarks. Of course, there’s a wide choice of excursions available which are expertly tailored to take in all the absolute must-sees.

Exploring Budapest

As you approach the city and catch sight of its iconic Parliament Building on the banks you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was built specifically with the delight of cruisers in mind. The Neo-Gothic masterpiece was inspired by London’s Houses of Parliament and, as well as functioning in a modern-day political capacity, it is also one of the city’s key landmarks. A guided tour will tell you all about its history and give you the chance to see more of its incredible architecture.

The Castle Hill area in Buda is another of the city’s most popular areas in the heart of the city’s medieval district. Cobbled streets, baroque architecture and scenic squares all contribute to the atmosphere and cultural delights. Fisherman’s Bastion is a must-see, a 19th-century folly which boasts fairy-tale turrets and towers, as well as exceptional views.

Matthias Church is the key attraction to be found on the area’s main square and is a beautiful piece of architecture, used as the venue for numerous coronations of Hungarian kings-past. Though it suffered intensive damage during the Second World War, its interiors were rebuilt with previously unseen medieval areas exposed and plenty more to see, making it a fantastic attraction.

The Hungarian State Opera House is another incredible landmark, dating back to 1884 and built in the style of perhaps the world’s most famous venue of its kind, the Vienna Opera House. Whether you’ve time to take in a performance or not, the building is a breath-taking piece of Neo-Renaissance architecture. It is possible to take a tour, but many visitors agree that a performance is the best way to appreciate the reason that this building was built for. Also built in the neo-Renaissance style, St Stephen’s Basilica is another incredible building, which took 14 years to complete. Its 300-foot dome is undoubtedly the most striking feature, with plenty more architectural wonders to witness, both inside and out.

Budapest Tips

If a Budapest bargain is what you’re after, be sure to head for the Great Market Hall, where you’ll find such national exports as Hungarian pottery and lace. If you’re in search of some local fare, try goulash soup, with a Gundel pancake for dessert.

a small catamaran cruise ship on the Danube near the Chain bridge in Budapest during the day

#1 – Cruise with 4- or 7-Course Dinner & Live Piano or Folk & Operetta  BEST VALUE!

Prices: 4-course dinner: from €91 , 7-course dinner: from €107.

We really enjoyed this evening boat excursion with delicious served dinner and entertaining piano duet.

It departs at 19.30 / 7.30 pm from a dock next to Elizabeth Bridge.

The cruise is 2.5-hour long and you may think it’s too long but the serving of food plus music combined with a peformance of a talented singer is extremely well-organised.

Note: The upper deck hosts the dinner with piano duet and singing, while the larger ground floor hall is where the folk dance and operetta performance takes place (also with served dinner of course). It’s a good idea to book with window seat if you go for the folk show option since not all of the tables are next to a window in that room.

Even as locals who’ve already taken a couple of Danube cruises since living in Budapest this one stands out because of the:

  • Quality of food – really tasty soup (choose from 2 options), a main dish and a dessert.

When To Go On A Danube River Cruise In Budapest?

The best time to go on a Danube river cruise in Budapest is between

  • April-May and
  • September-October.

At this period, the climate tends to be temperate with pleasant temperature s both during the day and at night.

Another advantage is that there is less crowd during these months compared to summer but still you will find a pleasant mix of locals and tourists relishing the warmer weather.

This creates a vibrant atmosphere that you can absolutely absorb during your visit, especially on a Danuber river tour.

Cruise on the Danube

For Families With Kids: Take An Afternoon Cruise At 2 PM

If you are here with chidlren and want to avoid the crowd we recommend our early afternoon cruise with a nice buffet lunch .

This is the least busy of all our cruises so you can enjoy a relaxed lunch during the 1.5 hour sightseeing tour.

The Grof Széchenyi Boat that will take you on the trip has plenty of space with large panorama window s on all sides.

BEST Time For Photos: Evening Cruise At 7 pm

If you’re looking to take lots of amazing photos, aim to book a cruise that departs just before sunset.

The two-hour evening cruise staring at 7 pm will give you the chance to see the city both in the daylight and at night when it is lit up by the city lights.

Our Sightseeing Tour on the Danube River

We took the evening boat trip with live music and dinner on a pleasant summer day.

The sightseeing ship departed from a dock near the Chain bridge at the foot of the Chain Bridge in Pest.

The Kossuth Museum Ship (or Kossuth Vénhajó) is a standing ship with a small exhibition about the 20th-century history of navigation in Hungary

grof szechenyi ship - Budapest Cruises

While the ship was gliding through the greyish foams of the river – contrary to the title of the Strauss waltz, The Blue Danube, it rarely is that colour- we had a tasty dinner with a glass of wine and enjoyed the breathtaking view basking in the golden light of the setting sun.

We’ve always known – and many tourists, travel websites, blogs, magazines agree – that Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in the world but we tend to forget it living and working here day by day.

Budapest night panoram on river danube

This river tour reminded us of this fact and we were really enchanted by the

  • striking view of the many monuments lit up after dusk,
  • romantic ambience created by the gently rocking ship,
  • magical melodies of the gypsy music (only on tours starting at 19.00) and
  • fine food. (The wine and champagne also helped.)

The river bisects the city into two different parts:

  • the hilly and more peaceful Buda on the right side,
  • and the buzzing Pest on the left.

The Parliament

Both river banks offer many sights : right at the start of the sightseeingcruise the graceful tower of the Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion draw your eyes to the historic Castle District.

Further up the building of Budapest Parliament dominates the Pest shore.

Joggers do their regular rounds on the picturesque Margaret Island (Margitsziget), named after a medieval Hungarian princess.

At the north end of Margaret Island the ship turned and went down the river as far as the National Theatre at the Pest end of the Rákóczi Bridge.

The fine building of the Gresham Palace – today an exclusive luxury hotel of the Four Seasons chain – stands at the Pest end of the Chain Bridge .

The dolomite rock of the Gellért Hill towers above the water between Elizabeth Bridge (Erzsébet híd) and Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd).

The Gellért Spa and the refurbished Rudas Bath originally built by the Turks in the 16. century can also be seen at the foot of the hill.

The modern-style National Theatre marked the final attraction of our excursion on the Danube river:

Following World War II, Hungary spent 40 years as the Soviet-backed Hungarian People’s Republic, a fascist regime that was massively unpopular for its oppressive politics, brutal secret police force (the ÁVH), and declining economic conditions. An uprising in 1956 failed to eradicate the Soviet-backed government, but did eventually result in more liberal policies. The Hungarian People’s Republic finally ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989.

Step into the past for a tour of this fraught history, beginning at the Budapest Retro Interactive Museum. Afterwards, you'll drive by Heroes’ Square on your way to Gellért Hill for spectacular views over Budapest, where you’ll see Hungary’s own Statue of Liberty. Originally erected as a monument to the Soviet “liberation” of Hungary from Nazi occupation, the statue’s inscription was later altered to celebrate Hungarian independence, freedom, and prosperity without mention of Soviet intervention.

Start your tour with a drive down the picture-worthy Andrássy Avenue. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture and city planning. Your coach will head into Budapest’s former Jewish quarter. Despite being one of the smallest districts in Budapest, it is still one of the liveliest, with a dense population and a plethora of bars, coffee shops, and street food stands. You’ll see the area’s unique streets and hidden courtyards before exiting the coach at Dohány Street Synagogue.

Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as Central Synagogue or the Great Synagogue, is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second-largest in the world. It’s gilded onion domes and red-striped facade make it one of the most interesting buildings in Budapest. The interior is even more ornate, with intricately designed ceilings and a combined floor and gallery space that can accommodate thousands of worshippers.

NOTE: When this tour falls on a Saturday, we will not be able to visit the synagogue. An alternative tour will be offered instead.

Later, you’ll visit the Vučedol Museum. The basic idea behind the concept of this unique museum was integration into the terrain—the entire structure is designed to be mostly buried in the ground and only the façade is open to the landscape. Its shape, as serpentine, follows terrain, and on whose green roof you can reach the archaeological sites over the museum. Along the path, you’ll encounter the various Vučedol culture archaeological findings that have been discovered to date, which showcase the daily life and customs during a turbulent time of the immigration of the first Indo-Europeans and their relationship with the native population, the blending of material cultures and religions. Following your time at the museum, enjoy lunch at the local family restaurant.

Next, you're off to Vukovar, whose bullet-riddled water tower stands as a reminder of the bitter Croatian War of Independence, fought between 1991 and 1995, when Croatia sought to break away from Yugoslavia. Thousands died during the siege of Vukovar, which was heavily damaged. Here you will see lasting signs of the conflict, but you will also see a revitalized community, determined to rebuild.

Belgrade

Belgrade, the modern-day capital of Serbia, is one of Europe’s oldest cities, dating back some 7,000 years. Signs of its tumultuous history are visible everywhere, juxtaposed with the city’s vibrant modern-day present.

As a motorcoach carries you through the city, you’ll see a mix of architectural styles that reveal the city’s past, ranging from Gothic, Ottoman, baroque, and art nouveau to utilitarian Communist apartment blocks and modern high-rises. While Belgrade has been no stranger to political upheaval, the 19th-century Residence of Princess Ljubica and serene old residential streets speak of calmer days, as do the bustling present-day café-lined boulevards. You’ll pass the tomb and memorial museum of Josip Broz Tito, which is located at the site of Tito’s former residence in Belgrade’s affluent Dedinje neighborhood, and visit Kalemegdan Fortress, high on a hill above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.

Ancient Romans built the first fortress here, and successive conquerors and defenders—Slavs, Byzantines, Ottomans, Habsburgs—continued to build and destroy fortifications on this site for another 1,500 years. Walk along the old stone walls, passing monuments and memorials (some will surprise you—poets and composers are honored here as well as military actions), for a sense of Serbia’s distant and more recent history. It’s not the only intriguing historical sight you’ll see today, however. You will also visit the Karadjordjevic Dynasty Palace and sip a glass of sparkling Serbian wine as you tour a compound of palaces built in the 1920s and 1930s. Serbia’s royal family, which is related to most of Europe’s royalty, has a strictly honorary position in modern-day democratic Serbia, but Crown Prince Alexander (who did not feel that taking the title of king was appropriate when his father died in exile in the United States in 1972) and his family still live in these palaces. A local expert will show you the public rooms of the Royal Palace, the White Palace, the adjacent chapel, and the spacious grounds.

Ride towards the island of Ada Ciganlija, an island in the middle of the Sava river with picturesque bike paths that wind through a beautiful park and beach. We’ll circle through the park, just as the locals do when they are looking for an active day out, and take a break with a refreshment before heading back to the ship.

Golubac, Cruising the Iron Gates

Golubac

Head ashore to explore a Paleolithic site and an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval fortress. All along the way, history lines the banks of the river. Keep an eye out for Trajan’s Plaque, which the ancient Romans erected to commemorate the road they anchored in the steep cliffs above the water, and Golubac Castle, built in the 14th century and attacked successively by the Serbs, Magyars, and Turks.

Unwind onboard as you cruise the breathtaking Iron Gates, an 83-mile-long (134-kilometer-long) stretch of scenic gorges that were cut through the Carpathian and Balkan mountains over eons by the Danube River. These gorges, which act as a natural border between Serbia and Romania, are among the most dramatic and beautiful sights in all of Europe. This was one of the swiftest and most dangerous stretches of the river before two dams were built: Iron Gate I and Iron Gate II. Construction on the dams began in 1964 and took 20 years to complete; they have dramatically altered the area’s landscape, raising the water level by 114 feet (35 meters) and drowning several islands and villages.

Later you'll visit Lepenski Vir which is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age, located on the Danube. It was once the epicenter of one of the most highly developed prehistoric cultures, with complex social relations and even rudimentary urban planning. The discovery of this prehistoric settlement has changed the image experts once had about the early Stone Age, expanding scientists’ knowledge about human communities that walked the earth millennia ago.

Vidin is a port town on the Danube that once played an important role in medieval Bulgarian politics, as the great fortress Baba Vida attests. It’s your base for an unusual excursion today—a visit to the fascinating Belogradchik rock formations. Or you can indulge in a tasting at a local winery.

Drive through the scenic Bulgarian countryside to Belogradchik, a small town in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, not far from the Serbian border. After some light refreshment at a local hotel, you’ll be ready to explore the astonishing rock formations nearby, which are over 200 million years old—and have inspired nearly as many legends! Many of the strange wind- and weather-hewn shapes have names, such as Adam and Eve, the Bear, and the Castle. The outcroppings formed a natural defense for the town that was enhanced with man-made fortifications over the centuries. Whether you choose to hike with a local expert to the top of the path or not, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views. Your return will take you past some sights that highlight Vidin’s mixed heritage: the Orthodox cathedral, the Turkish mosque, the Konak (the 18th-century headquarters of the Turkish police), and the cruciform barracks (which date to the 1790s). The final stop will be Baba Vida, whose stern 10th-century stone walls were built on the site of a Roman watchtower.

Bulgaria’s foremost Danube port, Ruse is sometimes called “Little Vienna” for its elegant 19th-century mansions and public buildings.

Twice the capital of Bulgaria—before and after the Ottomans conquered the nation—Veliko Tarnovo climbs steep hills above the Yantra River, topped by the ruins of Tsarevets, the stronghold where Bulgaria’s kings ruled between 1185 and 1393. The remains of the great stone walls and towers that you see formed the historic heart of the Second Bulgarian Empire. History lives in this town, as a quick look at the wares for sale in Samovod Marketplace will show you: Handicrafts are all made by local artisans using ancient, medieval, or Renaissance technologies. You’ll have time to peruse the exceptional local pottery and textiles there before heading to Arbanassi, home to six amazing 17th-century stone churches, each one decorated with colorful and intricate frescoes. Learn something of the multicultural history of this fascinating town at the Ethnographic Museum and visit the UNESCO-designated Nativity Church, where murals of the Nativity, the Last Judgment, and the zodiac brilliantly blend religious and humanist iconography. At another of the churches, Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, you’ll hear the otherworldly singing of an Orthodox choir in a short concert. Your day’s adventure includes a traditional three-course Bulgarian lunch, complete with live folk music.

Walk through the woods of Rusenski Lom, a protected region that is home to a wide variety of rare birds, among other wildlife, to Ivanovo Rock Monastery—once an enclave of more than 40 churches and chapels that the devout built inside caves above the Lom River Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is famous for its beautiful and well-preserved 14th-century murals.

Your next destination, the Basarbovo Rock Monastery, is the only rock monastery where monks still live and worship today. Climb the narrow rock stairway to the 15th-century cloister, which is cut into the limestone cliffs high above the Lom River, and take a look at the arresting frescoes. You’ll also spend some time in Ruse, a city with an easygoing, gracious feeling. Freedom Square, a huge open plaza, takes its name from the Freedom Monument, which soars from the center of the square; the stately Belle Epoque buildings surrounding the square attest to the city’s prosperity in the 1890s. Stroll along wide, tree-lined Alexandrovska, the main pedestrian street that links the city’s many attractive squares, encountering such landmark sights as Ruse’s grand theater, the city museum, and the first movie theater (it opened in 1896).

Bucharest Communist Tour with People's Palace

Bucharest began as a fortress in the 15th century, a warlike origin that set the tone for its turbulent history. It saw glory days as the summer residence of the Wallachian princes and was burned to the ground by the Ottoman Turks; then Austria-Hungary and imperial Russia fought over it for a century. After Wallachia and Moldavia united to form Romania in the mid-19th century, Bucharest enjoyed a prosperity that was reflected in its extravagant architecture, some of which miraculously survived WWII bombing and Communist building programs.

You’ll see Bucharest’s very own Triumphal Arch, which is modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and Victoria Boulevard, lined with chic shops and handsomely restored pre-war buildings—and sites where protests brought down Ceaușescu’s regime in 1989. These days Bucharest enjoys a lively and eclectic cultural scene, hosting international arts festivals and concerts, and a measure of prosperity apparent in its busy cafés and thriving street life.

For the most dazzling stop of the day, you’ll visit the colossal People’s Palace, the second largest office building in the world. It’s certainly one of the grandest as well, filled with crystal chandeliers, mosaics, marble, gold leaf, and stained-glass windows. A remnant of the city’s communist history, the building’s original design took a team of approximately 700 architects and was inspired by Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Neoclassical architecture. Though the People’s Palace was ordered by Nicolae Ceaușescu, the last communist leader of Romania, it was not completed until 8 years after his death. The Palace now houses the Romanian Parliament and three museums, including a contemporary art museum and the Museum of Communist Totalitarianism.

Get to know the bustling heart of Romania's capital city with a full day to explore Bucharest on your own.

Masterpiece Collection Providing the most all-inclusive luxury to our guests is the heart and soul of our brand and that will never change. Yet sometimes our guests want something that goes even "above and beyond" our included experiences. In light of this, we now offer guests a curated selection of optional excursions, available for an additional charge.

The ceausescu mansion - a dictator's private home.

Nicolae Ceausescu, the second and last communist leader of Romania, is infamous for many things. Today, a very physical manifestation of his dark legacy can be found in Romania’s architecture. Most famously, Ceausescu ordered the construction of the Palace of Parliament, a massive and undeniably beautiful building that came at the cost of much of historic Bucharest. Until quite recently, the dictator’s home was not open to visitors. Now, however, you can enter Ceausescu's home to see how he lived. As might be expected, the villa is grand; influences of Baroque and Rococo styles mingle with medieval Romanian elements, and gifts from historic heads of state—from Mao Zedong to Queen Elizabeth II—fill its halls.

*Masterpiece Collection are optional experiences that go above and beyond our daily selection of included excursions and can be booked for an additional fee. Select Masterpiece Collection Optional Experiences can be pre-booked. Snagov Palace with Vlad the Impaler's Tomb

Built by Prince Nicolae, brother of King Carol II, in the 1930s, Snagov Palace is a handsome estate on the shores of a lake with which it shares its name. On your tour here today, you’ll learn about its noteworthy design, as well as the historic figures who have walked its halls. We’ll complete our visit with a delightfully eerie experience: a quick trip to an island in the middle of Lake Snagov, where we’ll find a monastery rumored to house the remains of Vlad the Impaler—the real life Count Dracula.

Check out of your hotel this morning. If your cruise/tour package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer, you will be transferred to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport for your flight home.

7 of the best river cruises around the world for 2024

A cruise holiday isn’t always about setting sail across vast oceans. For an alternative type of break on the water, winding your way inland might sound similar but it’s a vastly different experience.

From crossing deep into the untouched areas of the Amazon rainforest to exploring some of Europe ’s finest cities, the river cruise experience is one that allows tourists to get to grips with the history, culture and tradition of a destination in a slow, immersive fashion.

This could be in the form of sampling Creole cuisine in Mississippi or discovering historic sites in Vietnam , but whatever it is, there’s plenty of choice across Europe , Asia , South America and North America .

Read on for a selection of the best cruises, from the Mississippi to the Mekong.

Europe’s second longest river – and arguably its most famous – river takes you through amazing capital cities and host of charming towns, as well as plenty of scenic countryside in Austria , Hungary , Slovakia and Romania. Cruises along the Danube can vary from a handful of days to almost three weeks, giving you time to explore the elegance of cities like Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava or Belgrade.

Emerald Cruises lets you see the best of the Danube with the addition of a hefty dose of traditional German culture in Munich. This famous river runs for over 4,000 miles throughout South America and is a major part of the eponymous rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and important natural areas on the planet. A river cruise remains the best way to reach deeper into the jungle, with many cruises beginning in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus or in the Peruvian city of Lima.

Start in Peru’s enchanting capital with the Peruvian Rivers and Rainforest Discovery cruise from Uniworld. You’ll fly to Iquitos, the largest city in the Amazon as your next stop, before delving into some of the most remote areas in the world as you take to the waters. From here, nature takes centre stage, with a variety of experiences – including jungle walks and kayaking on a lake – added to the enjoyment of natural features such as giant lilies, towering barrigona trees and around 10 per cent of the world’s known animal species.

From £8,799pp, including 10 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London, domestic flights and various excursions. Departing regularly from 17 January until 6 November 2024.

Start in  Cairo  and make your way down to Aswan over a few days (though many shorter routes operate between  Aswan and Luxor  only). For a relaxing way to take in riverside scenery and some of Egypt’s most important historical sites, a river cruise is the ideal choice.

AP Touring’s  Egypt Discovery  trip takes you on a round trip from Cairo. You’ll cross thousands of years of history, starting with West Bank the Valley of the Kings, before a short flight to Aswan to explore Abu Simbel and a sighting of the landmark Pyramids of Giza near the Egyptian capital. The scenery along the route is exceptional, too, with palm trees, green spaces and mini oases dotted in between the yellow-hued rock.

From £6,995pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, 30 meals (including unlimited local beer and wine) return flights from London Heathrow, domestic flights within Egypt and activities in each of the 10 destinations. Departing regularly from September 2024 to April 2025.

Exploring this land of castles and fairytales is a worthwhile European trip, with tours often starting in the pretty Dutch capital of Amsterdam and weaving across the German and French countryside, with the route broken up by cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf and Strasbourg. Many of the towns located on the banks of the Rhine, such as Koblenz, are incredibly picturesque, with a range of medieval castles and natural sites like the Black Forest also featuring.

Ama Waterways provide a seven-night cruise that runs from Basel to Amsterdam. Get your cultural fix at either end of your trip in either of these two cities, before admiring the vistas around the Rhine Valley, the medieval castles that loom over towns like Heidelberg and the timber-framed buildings that line the streets of Riquewihr and Strasbourg. Stops in both Freiburg and Dusseldorf are also included, as well as an optional excursion to Cologne.

From £2,399pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and tours in each destination. Departing regularly between 18 February and 28 December 2024.

The views around the Douro Valley are some of the best in Portugal , whether you’re sitting by the banks in Porto or admiring the verdant hills and vineyards around Pinhao. This region, well-known for its port production, has cruises lasting roughly one week that usually begin and end in Porto – where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean – with a brief crossing over into Spain and Salamanca.

The Riviera Travel package offers an affordable eight-day Douro option starting and ending in Porto , with two nights to explore Portugal’s magnificent second city (and to go on a guided tour of a well-known port producer). Days three and four take you to sleepy Castelo de Rodrigo and the historic Spanish city of Salamanca (with guided tours and time to explore at your leisure) before traversing the cascading vineyards of the valley on your way back to Porto via the beautiful Peso de Regua (and a local wine tasting).

From £1,599pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board, flights from a London airport, one excursion one each day and airport transfers. Departing regularly from 7 April 2024.

The Mississippi

Discovering the Deep South is often done by car, but with new routes recently from Viking Cruises, exploring Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota and Tennessee has never been more idyllic. The famed cities of New Orleans and Memphis can bookend your tour, with lesser-known locations such as Baton Rouge, Natchez and Darrow making up the other stops.

Opt for Viking’s ‘Heart of the Delta’ cruise to if you really want to immerse yourself in the Deep South. The cruise begins with a few days exploring the French influences and Creole cuisine of New Orleans , before moving on to Baton Rouge – a haven of Creole and Cajun culture – and then onto Natchez, the oldest city on the river. You’ll travel through other towns on the Mississippi – complete with walking tours or excursions to the Atchafalaya Swamp basin – before reaching Memphis, the atmospheric home of blues music.

From £6,545pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London and one excursion per destination. Departing weekly from March 7 until 13 June, with additional departures on 7 November and 13 November.

The Mekong flows through a host of Asia’s most fascinating countries, including Vietnam , Thailand , China and Cambodia. Most cruises only take in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia , though this mix of floating fishing villages, traditional markets and the two capitals of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh will be enough for most travellers. With Avalon Waterways , you’ll combine energetic, modern cities with some of the most vibrant culture in Asia and a history that is equal parts sobering and fascinating.

It starts in Siem Reap, site of the Angkor Wat temple, before moving on to the Cambodian capital, where you can learn about the dictatorship of Pol Pot and visit several must-see landmarks. After this, Vietnam beckons, with a visit to the dizzying Ho Chi Minh City to see its admirable architecture. Visits to markets, old Vietnam War tunnels, temples and cooking classes are dotted in between these city trips for good measure, with stops at characterful towns like Vinh Long, too.

From £4,229pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and activities on each day of the trip. Departing regularly from 15 January to 11 March and from 12 August to 2 December 2024.

APT to debut ‘the most luxurious ships on the rivers’ in 2025

budapest river cruises

The Australian, family-owned travel company has unveiled two new ultra-luxury ships as it ventures into the luxury river cruising space

APT has unveiled its next generation luxury river cruising fleet additions, the APT Solara and APT Ostara, set to launch in 2025. Crafted by the renowned Melbourne-based Hecker Guthrie design team, these ships promise unprecedented luxury on Europe’s waterways.

The announcement, made at a high-profile event in Sydney on May 9th 2024, highlighted the ships’ novel features, including the world-first, state-of-the-art Grüner Bar & Dining. The venue has a unique hydraulic system that can ascend to the sun deck, offering guests 360 views unmatched in river cruising.

“The whole venue lifts, becomes level with, and actually opens onto the sun deck. Imagine when you have docked in Budapest, and that becomes the back venue. You can sit there at sunset and have one of your various specialty cocktails. No one else in the world has put a whole dining venue on hydraulics. Guest will enjoy 360-degree views … the envy of every other river cruise,” said David Cox, CEO of APT Travel Group.

Each vessel will accommodate 154 guests, with one crew member for every 2.5 guests – a staff-to-guest ratio that APT boasts is amongst the best on European rivers . The interior design merges Australian simplicity with European elegance, offering guests a range of five-star dining experiences across six distinct venues developed by FellowHospitality.

  • The Grüner Bar & Dining showcases a signature seasonal cocktail list, local wines, drink-friendly European snacks, and ingredients from each specific region you’re exploring.
  • Bistro Saison – European neighbourhood atmosphere offering classic fare from local regions with modern flair.
  • The Owner’s Cellar – an intimate wine cellar hosting just 16 guests with exclusive set menus perfectly matched with incredible wines only available in the private cellar.
  • Annie’s Table – centred around familiar favourites executed with precision and dished up in a shareable setting.
  • The Salon – a relaxed social space offering breakfast and lunch.
  • Daystar Deck – Flame-grilled meats, seafood, vegetables, and cocktails served in the fresh air as the serene landscapes of Europe float by.

APT also showcased its partnerships with ultra-luxury ocean cruise line Seabourn and the innovative Murray River Paddlesteamers at the event. These collaborations will extend APT’s luxury cruising experience into ocean and river journeys across and beyond Australia.

The upcoming MS Estrela, launching in late summer 2024 on Portugal’s Douro River, and the Mekong Serenity, which began sailing in Southeast Asia in 2023, are also part of APT’s expanding portfolio, promising bespoke experiences and intimate settings.

APT underscored its commitment to sustainability with the new ships featuring enhanced fuel efficiency and waste reduction measures in line with APT’s goal to offer luxury travel mindful of environmental impacts.

As APT continues to innovate in the luxury cruising sector, these developments mark a significant milestone in offering sophisticated, sustainable, and highly personalised travel experiences in some of the world’s most scenic destinations.

  • China's expanded visa-free policy to boost cruise travel

(ECNS) -- Foreign tourist groups arriving in China by cruise ship via all ports along the country's coastline will be exempt from visas, the country announced on Wednesday.

Tourist groups each consisting of two foreigners or more, and organized or received by Chinese travel agencies, can enter China visa-free on board cruise ships via designated ports in 13 Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Sanya, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

Since October 2016, China has been piloting a visa-free policy for inbound cruise tourist groups in Shanghai. Since the implementation of the policy, the city has seen an annual average growth of 10 percent in cruise passenger arrivals.

Previously, the scope of stay under the pilot policy in Shanghai was limited to cities where cruise ports were located along with nearby cities and Beijing. While now they can visit coastal provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions as well as Beijing, an NIA statement noted.

Mao Xu, a senior NIA official, remarked that the new policy would make inbound cruise ports more flexible, and will be beneficial for foreign cruise liners to plan more diverse routes.

China resumed international cruise transportation to and from Chinese ports in September 2023. Last year, the number of domestic and foreign passengers transported by Chinese cruise ships exceeded 107,000. Currently, the inbound cruise tourism market in China is showing promising momentum.

Li Tao, a senior official at the border inspection department of the NIA, said that foreign passengers arriving by cruise ship are exempt from providing fingerprint biometric information. Passengers entering and exiting the country on the same cruise voyage are exempt from entry and exit stamps and from filling out foreigner arrival cards, further enhancing efficiency.

Besides, several Chinese government departments have jointly issued a notice stating that all national 5A and 4A tourist attractions, national and provincial-level tourist resorts, national-level tourist leisure districts, as well as three-star, four-star, and five-star hotels, must accept both domestic and foreign bank cards. Efforts are being made to actively establish foreign currency exchange points in cultural and tourism venues with a significant number of foreign visitors, aiming to improve the quality of foreign currency exchange services.
