My daughter bought me a tour as a birthday gift. I chose the Saturday afternoon tour. It was supposed to go to Tributary Brewing, SoMe Brewing, and Liar's Bench. They substituted Woodland Farms Brewery in Kittery for Liar's Bench. That makes sense as all three breweries were in Maine. The tour was very fun and the guides friendly and knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to ask for dining recommendations in Portsmouth. At each brewery, we got a number of samples of beer as well as a tour of the brewhouse. Tributary was especially interesting as the tour guide was Tod Mott, the owner and brewer.

We had an absolute blast on our growler tour over President's Day weekend. It can be chilly up in New Hampshire, but the bus was warm and the beer stops were phenomenal. If you're looking to learn about the craft brews in the area and want to meet some awesome people, granite state growler tours is your place to go. Thanks for a great afternoon!

Unique Beer Flavors at Granite State Breweries

New Hampshire, or as locals affectionately call it, the Granite State, is home to some incredible breweries that are sure to excite any beer enthusiast. One of the first things you’ll notice in your craft beer journey here is the sheer diversity and uniqueness of flavors these brewmeisters bring to their creations.

Let’s kick things off with Smuttynose Brewing Company. Here, they’re all about pushing boundaries with their unique flavor profiles. Have you ever heard of a pumpkin ale? Well, they’ve got one! Their Pumpkin Ale combines a malt backbone with an extra dose of homemade pumpkin pie spice for a truly unique fall treat.

Onward to Canterbury Aleworks where you’ll find the ‘Toad Stool Oat Stout’, a dark beer brewed with oats and rich chocolate malt. This isn’t just your average stout; it’s smooth and creamy but packs quite a punch in terms of flavor.

If you’re up for something truly out-of-the-box, then Schilling Beer Co.’s ‘Poppy’s Moonship Gose’ should be on your radar. They’ve taken traditional German-style sour wheat ale and added a twist — lemongrass and Thai basil. Sounds exotic? It’s precisely that!

Now if we talk numbers:

Note: The beers mentioned above are not ranked but listed randomly

So get ready to explore these fantastic breweries in New Hampshire. You’ll discover flavors beyond your wildest dreams that don’t just stop at being different – they redefine what beer can be! Don’t forget though, part of the fun is discovering new favorites along the way and there are plenty more Granite State Breweries waiting for your visit.

Seasonal Beers: A Specialty of New Hampshire’s Brewers

In the heart of New England, New Hampshire has carved out a unique niche in the brewing world. The state’s breweries have a knack for crafting seasonal beers that capture the essence of each changing season. Whether it’s a crisp fall lager or a hearty winter stout, these brewmasters know how to match their concoctions with what you’re craving during every part of the year.

Maybe you’ve sampled some of these seasonal delights? You might remember Smuttynose Brewery’s Pumpkin Ale, an autumn classic that perfectly blends subtle spice notes with pumpkin flavors. Or perhaps you’ve tried Woodstock Inn Brewery’s Frosty Goggles, a winter red ale that warms your insides when it’s chilly outside.

What makes these seasonal beers so special? It boils down to quality ingredients and innovative brewing methods. Many breweries source local ingredients whenever possible. For instance, Portsmouth Brewery uses freshly picked apples from nearby orchards for its Apple Harvest Lager. That kind of care and attention to detail shines through in every sip.

Now let’s talk numbers! Here are some quick stats about New Hampshire’s brewery scene:

These figures represent not only the growth and dynamism within New Hampshire’s craft beer industry but also reflect how much locals and visitors alike love their beer!

So next time you’re visiting New Hampshire or cruising through its scenic byways, make sure you stop by one of its renowned breweries for a taste of their stellar seasonal brews. After all, there’s nothing like experiencing first-hand why this state is quickly becoming known as a haven for beer lovers!

Sustainable Practices in New Hampshire Brewing Industry

When you think of beer, sustainability might not be the first thing that pops into your mind. But hang on a second! It’s becoming an increasingly important aspect in New Hampshire’s brewing industry. More and more, breweries are looking for ways to minimize their environmental footprint and promote sustainability.

Take Smuttynose Brewing Company as an example. They’re sitting pretty at Hampton, NH with their LEED Gold-certified production facility. What does that mean? Well, it means they’ve got some serious eco-credentials on their side! The brewery has a solar array that provides 30% of its energy needs, recycles waste products into animal feed, and uses heat recovery systems during brewing.

Let’s talk numbers:

But hey, sustainable practices aren’t just about the environment. There’s also social responsibility to consider. Breweries like Stoneface Brewing Co., located in Newington, NH make sure to give back to the community by hosting events and donating a portion of sales to local charities.

Now let’s shift our focus towards another big player: Throwback Brewery at Hobbs Farm. This place is all about local sourcing – from grain-to-glass – striving for most ingredients coming within a 200-mile radius!

And guess what? Their efforts don’t stop there. Throwback Brewery also boasts an energy-efficient brewhouse with solar panels providing power and hot water heating system.

Here are some quick stats:

So next time you enjoy a craft beer from one of these New Hampshire breweries rest assured knowing they’re doing their bit for Mother Earth – while serving up some seriously good brews! Talk about raising the bar… or should we say pint?!

Taking a Budweiser Brewery tour in Merrimack, NH isn’t just for beer lovers. It’s also an experience for history buffs and anyone who likes to understand the ins and outs of how things are made. While you can no longer visit the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales at this location, you can tour the facilities and sample some of the many brews made and bottled in New Hampshire.

Picking up a Brewery Tour at Budweiser, New Hampshire

Clydesdale eating hay in a stall at Budweiser Brewery in Merrimack, NH

With the number of craft breweries on the rise, it’s easy to forget about the rich and storied history of ale giants like Budweiser, and that’s just what the brewing icon hopes to combat by offering tours of 2 bottling facilities. Since tours are only offered in St. Louise and Merrimack, this is quite a treat for visitors to New England.

To take a Budweiser Brewery tour in New Hampshire, however, you’ll need to trot on over to the brand store. This where you’ll meet your guide once you have purchased tickets online .

Tours start every 20 to 30 minutes or so, and while there is a small waiting area opposite the retail outlet, most people hang around checking out the merchandise. Most also shell out some extra cash to walk home with branded gear.

As any craft brewer will tell you, the act of making beer is largely a waiting game, so don’t expect to see a lot of action on the tour, particularly if you’re visiting on a weekend. In fact, the first stop after having your photo snapped with a bronzed Clydesdale, is the mashing facility.

During the walk from the store toward the building, you’ll learn about the history of Budweiser and the story of German immigrant, Adolphus Busch, who later joined forces with client Eberhard Anheuser to form Anheuser Busch, the parent company to the Budweiser brand.

As you near the mashing facility, you’ll be asked to turn off your cell phone to avoid accidental sparks. This is where hops and barely are brought in on trains and milled into a fine grain, forming the central ingredients for Budweiser’s famous brands. Once you leave the milling facility, you’ll be allowed to turn your phone on and take pictures again.

Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery Tour Includes Tasting of Unfinished Brews

finishing tanks at Budweiser Brewery

The next stop on the tour is the Budweiser craft brewery tanks. Here the guide discusses Budweiser’s foray into specialty beers. Since the brands under fermentation at Budweiser in Merrimack change on a regular basis, the guide will also tell you a little about the particular brews being made on that day.

Leaving the craft tanks, you’ll travel next to the Budweiser or Bud Lite finishing tanks. This is where the fermentation for Budweiser’s primary beers takes place. This is also the first sampling spot on the tour where guests are allowed to sip the freshly fermented beer prior to final finishing.

Which beer you will be able to sample will depend upon which brew is in the tanks on the day you’re visiting the Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery in Merrimack. During our visit, the facility was finishing a batch of Bud Lite. A survey of the drinkers on the tour, most who sipped a few small cups, revealed that beer at this stage was a little crisper than the finished product, possibly more flavorful.

After enjoying the unfinished samples, the tour moves you along to the finishing room. This is where beechwood is added to the bottom of the tanks before the brew you just sampled is piped in.

The beechwood is designed to facilitate the lagering process wherein yeast is used to reduce some of the by-products of fermentation, mainly acetaldehyde and diacetyl. The former is reported to emit a taste like green apples or latex paint, if you can imagine the two tasting the same. The layering of beechwood gives the yeast a place to grow as it goes about its work of breaking down these distasteful byproducts.

This is also where the beer will pick up most of its carbonation as well as its alcohol content, since the majority of the fermentation occurs in these tanks. On some trips, you will be offered the option to take home a small piece of the beechwood used to age Budweiser.

Bottling Happens Day and Night at Budweiser Brewery in Merrimack, NH

Bottling line at Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery

When operating at peak capacity, the Budweiser New Hampshire Brewery turns out 57,000 cases of bottled beer in a day. You’ll see how this is possible on the last stop of the tour. Glass windows overlook the bottling plant, where you can see packaging of the bottles in action.

The tour guide will pause here and answer any lingering questions for those who are interested in the process. Others dwindle away into the tasting room, where the majority of the Budweiser Brews are available on tap, including some specialty beers.

Each guest was allowed two samplings during our first visit served in 6-ounce plastic cups. However, during our second visit to the New Hampshire brewery, drinkers in the group were asked to select a single variety which was then served in a much larger souvenir pilsner glass. O’Doul’s and various varieties of soft drinks are available for non-drinkers.

Brews, Burgers, & Greenway Views: A Fun eBike Tour with Triangle Adventures

We’ve been saying for years, Raleigh needs some good tours – preferably on bikes that take you on a brew crawl!

Well, we found this fun Raleigh adventure last weekend down in Clayton, Johnston County, only about a 20–30-minute drive from Raleigh. (one of our favorite places to visit on a day trip from Raleigh)

As avid explorers seeking the road less traveled, we joined local tour company, Triangle Adventures’ Burgers, Brews, and History tour, a delightful excursion that promised a perfect blend of scenic beauty, culinary delights, and fascinating local history.

It combined many things we love: bike riding, learning local history, hanging out with cool people, soaking up beautiful weather and views, and enjoying great local food and drink.

About Triangle Adventures

Triangle Adventures , a new ebike tour company, is offering residents and visitors the chance to experience our Triangle region in a fun and off-the-beaten path kind of way!

This tour company was created by recently married locals David and Marlo. It was while riding back and forth from their Clayton home to downtown and along the Neuse River Greenway, that they thought of how fun it would be to start a touring company to help locals get to know their communities better in a fun way.

Their signature tour right now is the Burgers, Brews, and History Tour, and a two-hour scenic adventure along the Mountains to Sea Trail. They have also just started a Taco and Tap tour as well!

With all our greenway trails, the Triangle has infinite opportunities for fun ebike tours! I see a bright future ahead.

What is included on the ebike tour?

I was in spring mode when we joined our tour at the end of March, so arrived in Clayton with a warm jacket for the unsually cold day we were having, BUT completely forgot about gloves.

I was so grateful to arrive and hear Dave tell us they had gloves and neck warmers for all bikes! They really came in handy. Now you won’t need them if riding during the warmer months, but Triangle Adventures provides everything else you need.

You’ll learn how to use the state-of-the-art pedal assisted ebikes before you start your tour. You will love how easy they are to use and how effortless they make your ride. You can choose how much pedal power you want versus electric power. I like to get a bit of a bike work out in so I didn’t use the turbo power much, but often it was fun to use it and fly along the trail.

You’ll also get helmets, snacks, and bottled water. Each of the bikes had license plates with names of towns in the Triangle, which I thought was a cook feature.

Other inclusions are dependent on the tour you do. For our tour, we had a burger and flight of beer to share at the first stop, and then a pint at the last brewery.

All you need to bring is yourself, comfortable clothes, closed toe shoes, sunglasses, and a bag in case you want to carry anything, the bikes do have a storage bag at the back.

The Burgers, Brews, & History Too Tour

If you’re already digging the sound of this and want to get started, we’ve secured a 10% discount for you, exclusive to our readers. Just use the code ThisIsRaleigh when booking.

Now, for those who want to learn a little more about this ebike tour in Johnston County, let’s start pedaling.

Clayton Beginnings

After a thorough safety talk and tips on operating an ebike, we started with a tour through downtown Clayton, a rapidly growing community in Johnston County.

We made several stops along the way to admire historic landmarks and hear captivating anecdotes that brought the town’s past to life. Marlo, a history buff, regaled us with tales of Clayton’s rich history, from its humble beginnings as a North Carolina Railroad depot (originally called Stallings Station) to its Civil War history, and its vibrant present-day culture.

We heard tales about local heroes in the Clayton Cemetary and how Clayton grew with the Clayton Spinning Mill and the Mill Village which attracted workers from all over.

This historic textile plant is now being turned into unique apartments with a strong community living focus.

As traffic in Clayton is not overwhelming – at least not on the weekends, it was a cruisy bike ride through the town and its main street, which is exploding with quaint local boutique, cool restaurants (hello Scott Crawford) and bars (including one of our favorite Revivalist.)

We cycled past the cool looking First Street Tavern inside a historic home with a wrap-around porch that we’ve noted down as a must come back and explore.

You can learn more about Downtown Clayton in our post on date experience in Johnston County.

Burgers at Vinson Pub

I was happy that our biking tour stopped off for lunch at the beginning of the tour. It gave us time after to ride off the much-enjoyed calorie consumption of a delicious burger and flight of beer samples.

Plus, it gave us an opportunity to chat to our fellow bikers, which included our guides Dave and Marlo, our friends, Paula, and Cindy (who we met IRL on one of our walking meetups) and fellow Instagram influencer, Vanessa ( @RaleighFoodCrush ) and her husband, Adam.

Vinson’s Pub & Eatery in Downtown Clatyon is a popular burger and brew restaurant located in a 100-year-old building (we learned about its history on the tour). As part of the tour, you get a yummy beef or bean burger, and a sampling of some of their craft beer, which comes from local NC breweries, and ranged from light lagers to hoppy IPAs.

If you’re feeling extra hungry, you’ll have time to order something else from the menu to eat as well. From classic cheeseburgers to gourmet creations, there was something to please every palate, making it the perfect pitstop for hungry adventurers.

We all enjoyed sharing delicious Trashcan Nachos topped with house smoked pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and homemade beer cheese! As I’m gluten free, I drank a tropical cider from a brewery in Charlotte instead, and as far as ciders go, it was highly memorable.

Bike the NC Mountains to Sea Trail

Fueled up on burgers and brews, it was time for a scenic ride along the picturesque NC Mountains to Sea Trail, where the gentle hum of our electric bikes melded harmoniously with the rustling leaves and chirping birds.

The Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) is a crown jewel of North Carolina’s outdoor adventure trails, stretching an impressive 1,175 miles across rugged mountain peaks, rolling piedmont hills, and pristine coastal marshes. from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks.

Although it’s not finished yet, there are several who have claimed to have biked the entire way. Only they have the secrets as to how they traversed through the incomplete sections!

We were biking the Neuse River Greenway Trail section of the Mountains to Sea, which is Johnston County’s contribution to the Mountains to Sea Trail.

The ebikes provided the perfect balance of effortless cruising and eco-friendly exploration, allowing us to soak in the natural beauty of the landscape without breaking a sweat. But, if doing this on your own on a pedal bike, the trail is flat and easy.

You will follow the Neuse River for a while, stopping at the bridge that crosses it where we learned a lot about the trail and the 275-mile river – the longest entirely in the state of North Carolina.

Warning: Don’t swim in it. If the bull sharks don’t scare you away (although too shallow in this area for them to swim up) the pollution will. It’s an endangered river, known to be one of the polluted in the country. So sad! Hopefully, they can clean It up like they did the Thames River in London.

On our bike back along the greenway trail, we stopped to learn about the history of the indigenous Tuscarora Indians, who occupied much of the North Carolina inner Coastal Plain at the time of the Roanoke Island colonies in the  1580s .

They were considered the most powerful and highly developed tribe in what is now eastern North Carolina. Although, thanks to white settlement, and Indian Wars, they were pretty much left with no choice but to relocate to the areas between New York and Canada.

Deep River Brewing Company

Our journey culminated in a fitting finale at Deep River Brewing Company to toast to new friendships and memorable experiences.

Before finishing with our final brews, we learned a little history and fun trivia on the alcohol and brew scene in North Carolina.

Since NC was late to the game – starting our prohibition era long before everyone else, then taking their time changing from dry to wet counties, and still having unusual drinking laws – we come in low on the rankings of the state that drinks the most in the USA.

New Hampshire is topping out that one, but we all agreed, that with the influx of out of staters moving to North Carolina (oh okay then, Australians as well) were sure to see our state rise on those rankings soon!

Now into Deep River we go: First hard decision: sit in the large seating area inside, or the outside beer garden!

Next choice: which beer do you choose on a menu filled with beer such as light lagers, malty stouts, fruity wheat beers and hoppy IPAS?

They also have gluten free options like cider and seltzer, and non-alcoholic brews as well. I really enjoyed my Paloma Seltzer light and refreshing and brewed by Deep River.

Deep River Brewing Co was Johnston County’s first legal brewery, opened in 2013 by Paul and Lynn Auclair. It’s a fun community brewery that has frequent food trucks and events.
