A guide to buses in tenerife: public transport made easy.

Do you want to explore Tenerife by bus?

Then you’ve come to the right place. I used Tenerife buses for a week and am excited to share my experiences and tips.

Getting around Tenerife without a car  is easy, comfortable and inexpensive. Here’s all you need to know to ace public transport in Tenerife.

The Tenerife Bus Service (TITSA Buses Tenerife)

Every corner of Tenerife is covered by the bus service managed by TITSA . This is an abbreviation for  Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife, Sociedad Anónima .

TITSA operates a modern fleet of shiny, shamrock-green buses. Tenerife buses are clean and equipped with the latest safety technology and air conditioning.

Additionally, much of the TITSA fleet is wheelchair accessible.

In many respects, buses are of a higher standard than those found in the UK.

Tenerife bus services run more or less on time.

Tenerife buses are called guaguas by Canarian people (pronounced ‘wah-wahs’).

Tourist Bus Routes in Tenerife

Take a look at this map from TITSA, summarising the major tourist bus routes in Tenerife.

map showing the major tenerife bus routes for tourists

These are the  popular tourist routes :

  • TITSA 102 / 103  Puerto de la Cruz – Santa Cruz
  • TITSA 108 Santa Cruz – Icod
  • TITSA 110 Santa Cruz – Costa Adeje
  • TITSA 111 Santa Cruz – Costa Adeje via Tenerife South Airport
  • TITSA 325 Puerto de la Cruz – Los Gigantes
  • TITSA 342 Costa Adeje  – El Teide
  • TITSA 343 Puerto de la Cruz – Los Cristianos via Tenerife North and Tenerife South Airports
  • TITSA 348 Puerto de la Cruz – Teleférico Del Teide
  • TITSA 473 Los Cristianos  – Los Gigantes
  • TITSA 477 Costa Adeje  – Los Gigantes

Tenerife Bus Tickets

When you buy your ticket from the bus driver, you can pay with cash or a bank card.

1. SINGLE TICKET

This is bought from the driver and the price depends on the route.

The maximum value of notes from which drivers can give change is 10 euros. Contactless payment via bank cards, smartphones and smartwatches is also accepted.

Single tickets can also be bought via the mobile app (ten+ Móvil).

2. ROUND-TRIP TICKET

Again, this is bought from the driver and is available for a same-day return journey of at least 20 km. Buying a return ticket gives you a discount of 10%.

3. PAY-AS-YOU GO RECHARGEABLE PASS (TEN+ CARD)

Easier than buying individual tickets, load credit onto a contactless  ten+ card  and you’re good to go. This is the easiest way of paying for your bus fares in Tenerife and is also the most affordable option.

Although it’s not crystal clear from the company’s website, using the ten+ card gives you a reduction on the single fare , typically 20 – 30%.

TEN+ cards are not accepted on the special bus service to Teide.

4. FIXED-PERIOD BUS PASSES

Unlike public transport in Gran Canaria , tourist-friendly one-day and one-week bus passes are available, loaded onto a ten+ card or the  ten+móvil app .

These cost €10 and €50 respectively (August 2023).

Buying and Using the Tenmas (ten+) Card

You need to buy your ten+ card at the  bus station, tram station  or another  authorised outlet . You won’t be able to buy this from the bus driver.

If you want to take the bus from  Tenerife South Airport  to your destination, you can buy a ten+ card from the Lycramobile shop, located just beyond the baggage reclaim area.

The card itself costs €2 which you then load with credit in €5 increments up to €100.

tenmas-card-used-for-bus-travel-in-tenerife

Recharge the ten+ card with credit at the bus/tram, station or at one of the self-service machines. You can also register and  top-up your Tenmas card online .

You can use the ten+ card for travelling by bus and tram across Tenerife.

A ten+ card can be used by  more than one passenger . You can also change buses.

The balance on your ten+ card is valid for one year from the date it was last topped up. The card itself is good for ten years.

To use the  Tenmas  card, tap it on the reader near the driver when you enter the bus. If more than one of you is using the card, tell the driver before you present the card.

titsa-bus-tenmas-card-reader

When you have reached your destination, tap the card again on the reader next to the exit door at the centre of the bus. The fare will be deducted from your credit balance, which will be displayed on the reader’s screen.

Getting and Using the ten+móvil App

I chose not to use the app because I felt that the ten+ card suited my purposes. Also, the app required the entry of my passport number as part of the registration process, about which I felt a little uncomfortable.

But if this is the right option for you, firstly, download the ten+móvil (Via Móvil) app from  Google Play  or the  Apple Store.

Enter your registration details and add money to your account via a virtual wallet.

To pay for fares on board the bus or tram, you need to read the QR code to validate the trip. This is usually located near the entry door.

Tenerife Bus Fares

Using buses on the island is very affordable.

To put this into context, exploring Tenerife by bus cost me €35 in 2020. This included the return fare from  Puerto de la Cruz  to Tenerife South Airport. Not bad for a week’s travel.

It’s worth noting that although the one-week travel pass wasn’t available when I travelled to Tenerife, at €50 for the week, this would have cost me more money.

Fares for popular tourist routes with  Tenmas  card

To give you a sense of how much it is likely to cost you to travel around Tenerife by bus, here is a selection of single fares (August 2023) for popular routes on the island:

  • Puerto de la Cruz – Santa Cruz: €5.25
  • Puerto de la Cruz – Tenerife South Airport: €13.55
  • Los Cristianos – Santa Cruz: €9.00

Check  current fares for Tenerife buses  here.

Essential tips for exploring Tenerife by bus

1. Buy a Tenmas (ten+) Card

In terms of cost and convenience, a  Tenmas  card is unbeatable.

2. Get hold of a bus map and timetables

A Tenerife bus service map and set of timetables are indispensable in planning your routes around the island.

I was given these when I purchased my  Tenmas  card. Alternatively, download  Tenerife bus schedules and map  from the TITSA website or pick them up from one of the island’s Tourist Information Offices.

3. Check your destination carefully

TITSA buses display their three-digit number on the front, back and sides of the bus. The destination is displayed on the front of the bus.

If you want to double-check that you’re heading in the right direction, ask the driver. In my experience, most drivers are happy to help out visitors. And if your Spanish isn’t up to scratch, they are able to speak some English.

Once on the bus, the stops are not announced. However, you should be able to see them on a screen at the front of the bus (and sometimes on an additional screen near the exit doors).

If you need to get off at the next stop –  la próxima parada  in Spanish –  you should let the driver know by pressing the red button.

4. Watch out for the express buses

There are some bus services that do not make any stops  en route . Whilst these express buses are great if you want a speedy journey from A to B, they are not so great if you don’t want to travel all the way to the terminus.

I was caught out on day 1 when I intended to travel to La Laguna from Puerto de la Cruz but ended up in Santa Cruz sooner than I had wished. Don’t repeat my mistake.

5. If you are paying with cash or card, keep hold of your ticket

Don’t risk a fine. Keep hold of your ticket until you leave the bus.

Supervisors board the buses to check tickets (I came across them twice during my week in Tenerife ).

6. On popular routes, board the bus at its starting point and get there early.

On more than one occasion, I witnessed queues of people trying to board popular buses at the bus station, and full buses driving past a sea of disappointed faces at bus stops further along the route.

Buses in Tenerife are also used heavily by residents and can get very busy. To avoid disappointment, catch your bus at its starting point if possible (usually the bus station) and arrive a good 15 minutes before its scheduled departure time.

Recommended Tenerife Guidebook

Getting your hands on a good guidebook to help you to plan your trip to Tenerife and to explore the country whilst you are there, is a smart move. I highly recommend this excellent  Marco Polo  guide , which was my constant companion when I visited Tenerife.

Tenerife by Bus: Final Thoughts

Whilst hiring a car gives you greater freedom, getting around by bus in Tenerife is an easy and very affordable way of seeing the island. This is also a cheap way of getting around if, like me, you are travelling alone in Tenerife .

Exploring Tenerife without a car frees you from the stress of driving and parking. In not adding to the traffic congestion on the island, in your own small way you are doing your bit towards preventing climate change.

Apart from the lack of flexibility, the only other disadvantages of exploring Tenerife by bus are the infrequency of some schedules and a lack of direct routes to some destinations, necessitating a change of bus. However, with a little forward planning, you can overcome these disadvantages.

For the places that are harder to reach, or if you want to pack as much into your day as possible, consider taking one of the many organised day tours in Tenerife . These are convenient and inexpensive and you benefit from the knowledge of a local guide.

Finally, we all like a friendly and polite traveller and bus drivers are no different. Greeting them with a smile and a cheery  hola  /  buenos días  /  buenas tardes  will go a long way to easing your journey.

Feliz viaje!

Hi! Thanks for this info. I’ll review info accordingly (the TITSA website suggest that you can still purchase tickets from the driver but this isn’t supported by recent passenger reviews!)

How to Use Buses in Tenerife: What You Need to Know

Jovita

  • Updated On March 20, 2024

In general, using public transport in Tenerife is affordable, frequent, accessible and reliable, making it a great way to get around the island. This guide will take you through all you need to know about bus travel in Tenerife, including ticket types, bus stations, timetables, routes, top tips and frequently asked questions.

If you’d like to know more about using buses to explore Tenerife, read on to find out all about how the island’s bus services are run – and how best to use them.

Table of Contents

TITSA of Tenerife

Tenerife’s buses are run by a public transport company called TITSA. This acronym stands for ‘Transportes interurbanos de Tenerife, S.A.’ This means Tenerife Intercity Transport, and the S.A. indicates that it is a public company. TITSA belongs to the island’s governing body, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife .

Green bus passing gas station

TITSA runs a fleet of air-conditioned buses that are comfortable and modern. Thanks to the distinctive green livery, they’re also easy to spot when you’re around town or waiting at the bus stop. Many of the buses are accessible by wheelchair, and the range of routes covers the entire island.

Trams in Tenerife

Although this article is all about buses, it may be helpful to know that trams also operate on the island. Metro Tenerife only runs two lines, however, connecting the capital Santa Cruz with San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Use of trams is included with some of the travelcards detailed below.

Tram in Santa Cruz, Tenerife

The Guaguas of the Canaries

In Tenerife, locals refer to buses as ‘guaguas’. In fact this is true throughout the Canary Islands, and on Gran Canaria there is even a company called Guaguas who run the bus services there. This is why you might see signs saying Estación de Guaguas when you’re in Tenerife. Or you might even spot the bus stations themselves when spending time in larger places.

Accessible Buses

As well as being cheap, colourful, clean and convenient, many of Tenerife’s ‘guaguas’ are also accessible. On every bus there are designated seating sections for those with restricted mobility, and some have dedicated wheelchair bays. To get you on board, buses may be fitted with hydraulic lifts, or electric ramps that lower to street level.

TITSA’s bus fleet does include some older buses, so it’s best to check with them directly if you want to guarantee travel on a particular route or day. Find out more – including the phone number and opening times – from TITSA customer service here .

There are restrictions on the size and weight of wheelchairs for bus travel. The limit for wheelchair and user combined is currently 300kg, and the wheelchair should not exceed 1300mm in length or 750mm in width. These limits comply with local legal requirements.

Bus Fares and Ticket Types

This section will walk you through the various types of ticket available when using TITSA buses in Tenerife. Travelcards are often the best option, and each of these is outlined below.

The Ten+ (Ten Mas) Card

The cheapest way to use the bus system in Tenerife is to get a ten+ card. The card itself costs 2 euros, and can be bought from TITSA offices, vending machines, tram stations and other authorised outlets, such as souvenir shops. You can easily get it at the airport too. A full map of outlets can be seen here , and there is more information about buying various types of ticket further down the page.

Topping Up Your Ten+ Card

Once you’ve bought it, your ten+ card can then be topped up. This must be with a minimum of 5 euros and to a maximum of 100 euros, rising in €5 increments. The amount is then valid for a full 12 months, beginning with the first usage. After a year, it expires.

Ten+ Card Routes

The ten+ travel card can be used for all bus and tram routes on the island. Routes 342 and 348, travelling to Teide, are the only exception. As it can also be used by more than one person, the card can be shared with a family member or friend.

Ten+ Card Discounts

TITSA’s ten+ card gives you a discount of around 20% on the ticket price for each short journey, and about 30% discount for longer journeys. This is in comparison with standard single fares. If you wish, check current ticket prices here .

When comparing, simply select your bus route, departure point and destination and you will be shown both the full price and the ten+ card discounted price (this is displayed as ‘season ticket’).

To give you some idea of the savings that can be made, here are a few examples of the most popular routes, showing the savings that can be made by holders of a ten+ card:

Line 110 Costa Adeje – Santa Cruz Standard fare €9.45 ten+ fare €6.25 Line 477 Los Gigantes – Costa Adeje Standard fare €4.20 ten+ fare €2.80 Line 102 Santa Cruz – Puerto de la Cruz Standard fare €5.25 ten+fare €3.45

The minimum fare for a short journey is 1.15 euros with the ten+ card. If you pay the driver directly, the cost is 1.45 euros. So you can save 30 cents each time you take a short trip, which soon adds up if you travel frequently.

Using Your Ten+ Card

So how does the card work? When you board the bus – as well as when you alight – you scan the card by touching it to the reader. When boarding, use the reader located near the driver. When leaving the bus, use the one near the door in the centre of the bus.

If you’re using the card for several people, you must specify the number to the driver before you scan. Or scan the card as many times as the number of passengers you would like to pay for.

You’ll see the fare for your journey when you tap the card on the reader before leaving the bus. Your remaining balance will also be shown. It’s important to scan the ten+ card before alighting, as if you don’t the fare will be calculated as if you travelled to the last stop on that route.

Where to Buy a Ten+ Card

The ten+ card can be bought from vending machines, TITSA offices, tram stations and other authorised outlets. These can be found all over Tenerife. You can see a current map of ten+ card outlets here .

If you arrive at an airport in Tenerife and are planning to use public transport to travel to your accommodation, you’ll find TITSA ticket machines there. So you should have no problems in purchasing and topping up a ten+ card at the airport.

At Tenerife South Airport, the ten+ card can also be purchased from the Lycamobile shop. You will see this once you’ve passed through baggage reclaim.

Titsa Green Bus in Canary Islands

TITSA Child Fares

Children under 5 years old travel free on TITSA buses. For older kids, tourists must pay the full fare. Only local residents can obtain a special discount card for children aged between 5 and 9.

TITSA Standard Tickets

There is also the simple option of paying the driver for a single ticket, or a return ticket if you plan to travel back on the same day. The price will depend on the route. Buying a return ticket gives you a 10% discount, but only when you’re travelling 20 kilometres or more. Bear in mind that bus drivers cannot accept banknotes with a face value of more than 10 euros. A credit card can also be used to pay for the ticket.

TITSA Travelcards

Several travelcard options are also offered by TITSA. These are valid for a day or a week, as follows.

Day Travelcard

The ten+ one day travelcard costs 10 euros and gives the holder unlimited bus and tram travel across the island. This 1 day card is valid for 24 hours from the first use.

7 Day Travelcard

A ten+ 7 day travelcard costs 50 euros. This permits unlimited tram and bus travel for a week.

Both of these unlimited travelcards can only be used by an individual. You can get them at the same places as the standard ten+ top-up cards.

Public bus station in Tenerife

The Ten+Móvil (Vía-Móvil) App

TITSA also operates a mobile app called ‘ten+Móvil’ (or Vía-Móvil) available both for Android and iPhone users. This can be used in place of the physical ten+ card. The app also gives users access to more ticket options, such as fixed value 15 and 25 euro bus passes and passes valid for 5 journeys.

At the present time (2024), however, the app is not working as well as it could, and many users complain about it due to various reasons. Plus, personal details – such as your passport number and phone number – are required just for registration. It’s also difficult to understand how to use it properly. For the sake of simplicity, we don’t recommend this app until it gets better.

How to Find Bus Routes

The TITSA website has a great interactive map. Here, you can browse the most popular routes for Tenerife’s main tourist destinations.

Here is a screenshot of this map. (This is clickable, so you can go directly to the official TITSA website, where you’ll be able to click on any bus route number to be shown the full route.)

Interactive map of Tenerife bus network

There is a downside to this map, however. As it displays only what TITSA regards as the main tourist attractions, users could miss out on lots of amazing places that are well worth visiting. Many of Tenerife’s highlights are not shown on this map. If you plan to visit somewhere that isn’t included, try using this map of the island instead.

This map allows you to select a departure point and destination. You will then be redirected to Google maps, where the bus or buses required for your trip will be shown.

TITSA also offers a map of the main tourist routes in Santa Cruz, which is worth checking out if you are staying there. As before, the image is clickable.

Main Bus Stations

If you’re planning to take a long journey in Tenerife, it’s worth being aware of where the main bus stations are. Many public transport routes connect at these stations, allowing you to take extended journeys involving more than one bus route. Here are the big ones to be aware of:

Intercambiador Santa Cruz Intercambiador Laguna (T) Puerto de la Cruz Main Stop Los Cristianos (T) Estación Costa Adeje (T) Estación La Orotava (T) Estación Icod (T) Estación Icod (T)

Intercambiador Santa Cruz Station

Bus Schedules

When checking bus routes on the TITSA website, you may well find that only the starting station times are shown. Without seeing times for each single stop, how can you find out when the bus will arrive at the stop you want to use? This is all explained below.

The Titsa App

There is an official Titsa app which can be downloaded both for Android and iPhone.

Finding Bus Stops and Times

Once in the app, click ‘ near bus ’ and the app will find bus stops close to you (as long as you allow the device to share your location). Alternatively, you can enter the stop number there – as stated on all bus stops.

The Spanish word for this is ‘parada’. Every bus stop has a green sign displaying the parada number. When you enter this, the app gives you a list of all upcoming buses, including the direction of travel.

If you don’t know the exact number of the bus stop but do know its name, you can choose ‘ show lines ’ in the app. Select the bus you want and you can see all stops on the route. You can then touch on each to find out which buses will arrive there, and at what times.

By using this app, you can find out when the bus will arrive at the bus stop you want. You can also discover the arrival time at your destination.

At Tenerife’s largest bus stations, there are monitors showing all this information, so no app should be required.

Other App Features

The app also has some other helpful features. Tap on ‘ Getting there? ’ and you can check out the best route available for your trip via Google Maps. Or you can tap on ‘ Rates ’ and to find out the fare. Finally, the app also allows you to check out locations for purchasing and topping up a ten+ card.

People waiting on bus stop

The Moovit App

There is also another app, not related to Tenerife but still working just fine on the island. It’s called Moovit and you can download it both for iOS and Android. Or you can simply use the website .

It shows routes, stops, and buses on an interactive map. It’s also possible to check live arrival times for any bus stop you want.

Top Tips for Using Buses in Tenerife

Here are some of the key pointers to bear in mind when using Tenerife’s bus network.

Wave For the Bus to Stop

You should always wave when the bus approaches in Tenerife. If there will be no one willing to disembark at your bus stop, and you will be standing there alone, there is a big chance that a bus will just drive past you if you don’t wave.

How to Request a Stop

To make the driver stop at your desired location, you need to press a red button inside the bus. These buttons can be found all over the bus. When you press one of these red buttons, the words ‘Parada Solicitada’ should appear on the screen above the driver. You will need to use this system, as buses in Tenerife stop only upon request.

How to Track Your Stop

On TITSA buses, the stops are not announced, so you must track them by watching the screen above the driver. Otherwise, use Google Maps on your mobile phone to check the bus’s current location of the bus. This tip has helped us on many trips that we’ve taken, all over the world!

Finding Express Bus Routes

It’s always worth looking for a bus with fewer stops en route. Stopping less often on the way to your destination can dramatically cut the journey time. For example, if you want to travel from Costa Adeje station to Santa Cruz, look for bus number 110 . This one is quickest, as it only makes a couple of stops along the way.

Direction of Travel

Always check the direction the bus is travelling in. The final destination is usually displayed on the front of the bus.

Starting Early

As buses in Tenerife can get really busy, it’s always best to start your journey as close to the route’s starting point as possible. Especially if you want to be sure of getting a seat.

Why Bus Travel is a Great Option in Tenerife

Even though car hire is affordable in Tenerife, bus travel is a great option when you want to avoid driving. Due to the abundance of narrow, winding roads on the island, driving can be stressful, particularly for inexperienced drivers. Parking can also be a problem in some places – this may even be the case at your accommodation.

In the main, buses on the island are modern, clean, accessible, comfortable and affordable. They also travel to every corner of the island, and for the most popular routes services are also frequent. Once you’ve read this guide, you should also find them easy to use!

The Most Popular Bus Routes

If you’ve just arrived in Tenerife and want to reach your accommodation by bus, you can use one of the following routes.

Buses from Tenerife South Airport

Titsa 40: tenerife south airport – costa adeje.

This is the route you have to choose if you are staying in the most popular southern Tenerife resorts such as Los Cristianos , Playa de las Americas , or Costa Adeje. It runs every 30 minutes, up until 9 pm. See the timetables for number 40 here .

Titsa bus number 111, Tenerife

Titsa 711: Santa Cruz – Costa Adeje via Tenerife South Airport

This route runs at night. If you are late to number 40 but still want to reach your accommodation by bus, 711 is exactly what you need. It runs until wee hours.

This bus goes to the station in Costa Adeje, stopping along the way in Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. 711 also runs in a different direction, to the capital of the island – Santa Cruz. You can find timetables for the 711 here . You can also use number 10 if Santa Cruz is your destination.

Buses from Tenerife North Airport

Titsa 343: puerto de la cruz – costa adeje.

This route begins in Puerto de la Cruz , before connecting with both Tenerife South and Tenerife North airports on the way to Costa Adeje station. It’s not as frequent as the previous two buses listed here, however. You can see the 343 timetable here .

Titsa 20: Santa Cruz – Tenerife North Airport

This route runs very frequently – every 30 minutes. It’s also a fast way of getting to your destination, as there is only one stop en route. Check out the 20 timetables here .

Titsa bus number 20, Tenerife

Titsa 30: Puerto de la Cruz – Tenerife North Airport

The 30 route is not as frequent as the 20, as a bus departs every 1 hour and 30 minutes. The 30 timetable can be found here .

Other Popular Bus Routes in Tenerife

Titsa 110: santa cruz – costa adeje bus station.

This route is deservedly popular, because it’s an express bus and stops only in a few places along the way. It provides passengers with a quick and comfortable way to reach the north of the island from the south – or vice versa. The same bus can also be used to go from Playa de las Americas or Los Cristianos to Santa Cruz.

It’s very frequent, departing every 20 minutes, and covers the distance in only an hour. Timetables here .

Titsa 342: Costa Adeje Bus Station – Teide

This route runs only once per day. The travel time to Teide is normally 2 hours and 15 minutes. A separate ticket is required for this bus, as the ten+ card is not accepted on the 342 route. The timetable can be found here .

Titsa 348: Puerto de la Cruz – Teide

You can reach Teide, from the north of the island, in 1 hour and 40 minutes by using bus number 348 . You also need a separate ticket for this bus, as again the ten+ card is not accepted.

Titsa 473: Los Cristianos – Los Gigantes

This is a very popular route, taking passengers from Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje to Los Gigantes , Puerto de Santiago or Playa de la Arena . The route also operates in reverse. You can also visit Playa de San Juan and Alcala by using the 473 route, and both places are very much worth stopping at.  See timetables here .

Titsa 477: Costa Adeje Bus Station – Los Gigantes

This route is very similar to the 473 – but is much quicker. On the downside, you can’t get to Los Cristianos or Playa de la Arena by using it, as the last stop is Costa Adeje bus station. Check out the timetable .

La Laguna bus station

Titsa 369: Buenavista del Norte (T) – Punta de Teno

This bus is worth catching for the views alone – it follows a spectacular route via winding roads, giving passengers million dollar panoramas over the landscape. The destination is the northwestern tip of Tenerife – one of the oldest parts of the island in terms of settlement. There is also a beautiful lighthouse in the area. This bus route is very popular, partly due to the fact that the road is almost always closed to private cars. The fare is 1 euro each way. The timetable is here .

Titsa 102: Puerto de la Cruz to Santa Cruz

This bus covers the distance between two northern towns in just an hour. If you are travelling at night, choose bus route 104 instead.

Tenerife is very well-connected by the island’s bus company, Titsa, who operate over 200 routes. There are also two tram lines in the Santa Cruz/La Laguna conurbation in the North-east the island.

Getting to and from the Airports by Public Bus

The frequent number 40 bus connects Tenerife South Airport with the Playa de las Americas/Costa Adeje area, and the 711 bus service connects both Santa Cruz and Playa de las Americas with Tenerife South Airport at night. Puerto de la Cruz is connected to both the North and South Airports by the 343 bus route, however it is relatively infrequent, so you may be better off booking a transfer if the schedule does not correspond with your flights. The more frequent number 30 bus connects Puerto de la Cruz with Tenerife North Airport. The number 20 route connects the island’s capital, Santa Cruz, with Tenerife North Airport. If you are planning your first trip to the island, then a transfer is often the best option since it will drop you off at your hotel’s reception.

Paying on the Bus and Discount Cards

All of Tenerife’s buses are equipped with machines that accept contactless payments from bank cards and mobile. You can also pay with cash, though drivers are not obliged to accept notes larger than €10, and the night-time buses require that you pay with the exact change.

If you are planning to do a lot of travelling by bus, there are some excellent-value daily and weekly deals that allow unlimited travel on both public buses and trams. To avail of these discount fares, you will need to buy a Tenmas (Ten+) card (available at hundreds of locations around the island). There is a Mobile App, however it appears to be difficult for visitors to use as it requires a Spanish ID. Details about the available discounts can be found here .

Trams in Santa Cruz/La Laguna (Metro Tenerife)

There are two tram lines that operate in Santa Cruz/La Laguna: Line 1 between Santa Cruz Bus Station (near the Auditorio de Tenerife on Avenida de la Constitucion) and La Laguna. Line 2 between La Cuesta and Tíncer. They run between 6am and midnight from Monday to Friday and through the night at a reduced frequency at weekends and on public holidays. More info and timetables can be found here .

Thank you very much FOR the information you are providing on your great website. If I buy the 7 day bus pass can I use it on the Tenerife South Airport bus to Puerto De La Cruz ?

I wish to travel from El Tablado to Santa Cruz next Friday February 19, 2023. Which bus will accommodate this schedule.

We are going to the Carnival.

Hi, The 111 Bus between Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz stops at the El Tablado bus stop.

Sitting in Denmark, I am unable to access the TITSA homepage, so I try this way. Is it possible to buy the Tenmas card at the Tenerife Sur airport and can I use it right away for the bus 40 to Costa Adeje bus station? I imagine that it could be worth while having the card, as my husband and I will be in Costa Adeje for three weeks. We know that we will occasionally take the bus between Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos, and Costa adeje and El Duque. At what age are you considered ‘Senior’ and is there a discount? Thank you very much.

Hi, These cards are available at the airport, though it might not be worthwhile for you to buy one there. There are two cards available to tourists: a 24 hour card (€10) and a 7 day card (€50). You may be better off buying the 24 hour or 7 day card when you know you are definitely going to use it. I don’t know of any discount for non-resident seniors.

Hi, how can I get from Puertito de Guimar to el Medano playa? Thanks

Hi, You should get the no. 120 bus from Puertito de Güímar to Camino del Socorro, then the 111 bus from there to San Isidro Bus Station, and finally the 408 bus from San Isidro Bus Station to El Médano.

Anita Segring

Hi We would like to go from Playa las Americas to La Laguna by bus. Which bus/buses do you suggest that we should catch?

Hi, I suggest that you get the 112 bus from Los Cristianos to Santa Cruz, and then the tram from there to La Laguna.

Saurabh Shukla

Hi, We are planning to go from Costo Adeje to the volcano on Mount Tiede and also to the observatory. Is there a bus service from Costa Adeje for this? Where is the drop-off point?

Hi, The 342 bus from Costa Adeje Bus Station goes to both the Cable Car Station and Visitor Centre. However there is only one bus per day in each direction. Currently (you should check the latest timetable) the bus leaves Costa Adeje at 09:25, and the return bus leaves the Cable Car Station at 15:40.

Morning…what bus do I need from las americas to el medano pls…also is it the same for my return journey? Regards Dawn

Hi, You should catch the no.470 bus from Los Cristianos, and the same for the return journey.

Tenerife Information Tenerife buses Tips on the bus routes

  • Each bus route (Lineas) has a number such as 473. The same number is used for Tenerife buses running in both directions on the route. The return route may be different . This may be caused by One Way Streets or Circular routes
  • Because of one way streets or the layout of the bus routes, you can find that buses for both directions may use the same bus stops, or you may have bus stops several metres apart but on the same side of the road. Example Los Cristianos Bus Station. Can be confusing so double check the route displayed at the bus stop and the bus destination on the front of the bus.
  • The route number and route is displayed on the front of the bus. The route includes where the bus came from and the destination. The lower name is the destination and on some Tenerife buses the lettering is larger for the destination. If you get on the wrong bus the driver will tell you.
  • In either case the Spanish pronunciations of destination names can be very different from English ones.
  • Tip write down the destination name before hand and show to driver.

Our ' Driving in Tenerife ' page will tell you everything you need to know about some of the laws, rules and regulations about getting around by car in the Canaries.

Taxi Finding a taxi is easy in Tenerife. From the moment you step out of the airport you will see them lining up outside; you cannot miss them! There are taxi ranks in every single resort and they can be spotted driving around all over the place.

Taxis display a green light on the roof or in the windscreen and will have an official plate with the letters ‘SP’ (servicio público – public service) on them. All journeys are metered and prices vary depending on the time and day you travel. Obviously, the fare goes up after midnight and will be more expensive on bank holidays.

The main taxi ranks will give you an approximate price for the most popular destinations.

Bus Travel Getting around by bus in Tenerife is a very affordable way of seeing the island. Spain-Tenerife recommends you pick up a timetable from any of the bus stations or many shops. Your hotel reception will also be able to help you with local bus information.

It is possible you may have to change lines and buses in order to reach specific places, not all buses go directly to their destinations and this can be quite time-consuming.

In Tenerife the public bus company is called Titsa and the buses are green and white. They are comfortable, air-conditioned and are heavily used by residents, so can get busy at times.

Using a bono bus card is a lot cheaper if you intend on making several journeys. It is very reasonably priced, gives you discount on fares and can be purchased at the bus station or on many of the buses.

Pass for a local in Tenerife with these insider tips

Dominated by the sky-high summit of El Teide, Spain’s tallest peak, Tenerife evokes everything that makes Spain’s sun-dappled Canary Islands such an endlessly enticing destination.

Elegant ancient towns, lively ports and isolated mountain villages mingle amidst otherworldly volcanic landscapes, and the arts shine in the cultured capital, Santa Cruz , home of the country’s most fabulous carnival. Peaceful walking trails weave past mist-shrouded hills and magma-molded calderas, and along the Atlantic shoreline, waves wash onto volcanic-pebble beaches and shimmering natural sea pools.

You’ll need a good few days to truly explore this deliciously diverse island. Book all the essentials, from hiking permits to Michelin-star dining, well ahead – this is, after all, one of Europe’s favorite vacation playgrounds. Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable stay on Tenerife, the Canary Islands’ beloved grand dame.

Come in February for Carnaval, winter for sunny skies or spring for hiking

Tenerife’s big festival blowout is its three-week Carnaval – a nonstop, sequin-clad, Caribbean-influenced celebration that takes over the buzzy capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife each February. Hailed as one of Spain’s greatest carnivals, it’s an unmissable show, but expect soaring accommodation and flight prices. Be sure to book everything well ahead!

The warm winter months from December to February are the high season for northern Europeans seeking sunshine, while the hot summer (June to September) is a popular time for Spanish vacationers, particularly in August. The in-between months of October and November are usually quieter and cooler – around 25°C (77°F) on the coast – with good deals on accommodations, and there’s wonderful hiking through fields of spring wildflowers from March to May.

Booking hiking permits in advance

Tenerife’s top natural thrill is the chance to summit Spain’s tallest peak, 3718m (12,198ft) El Teide , located at the heart of the lunar-like Parque Nacional del Teide . The key thing to be aware of is that you’ll need a pre-booked permit to hike up to El Teide’s summit. Only 200 permits are issued each day, and hikers snap them up months in advance, so reserve as far ahead as possible.

To help with conservation efforts, two other standout hikes, the Barranco de Masca and the Barranco del Infierno (both following spectacular gorges in western Tenerife), also require permits. If you don’t manage to get one, the island has many other rewarding walking trails , from lesser-known routes through the haunting beauty of Teide National Park to paths through lush cloud forests in the Anaga mountains of northeast Tenerife.

Choose places to stay near the things you want to see

Though it’s possible to explore the island in a few days, choosing the right place to stay in Tenerife is key. The winding roads can unexpectedly tack hours onto driving times, so it’s worth being based close to the can’t-miss sights and attractions on your travel list.

The north coast is best for getting away from it all, with accommodations mostly in small towns dotted along the Atlantic shoreline. Elegant Garachico , for example, has two delicious boutique hotels in restored Canarian mansions: Hotel San Roque and La Quinta Roja .

Hikers will love the remote, pastel-painted villages of the Anaga mountains in the northeast, with their eerily beautiful cloud forests and independent accommodations. And anyone looking for a touch of urban buzz should consider Santa Cruz, where cultural delights include the boldly designed Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and Santiago Calatrava’s wave-shaped Auditorio de Tenerife . Alternatively, consider historic La Laguna , where La Laguna Gran Hotel brings a stylish touch to a centuries-old home.

Sunny southwest Tenerife is the preserve of top-end resorts bursting with facilities, many of which have a strong focus on sustainability. Near surfing-oriented El Médano, Casas Bioclimáticas ITER is a smart and innovative collection of carbon-free self-catering houses and villas, powered by solar and wind energy and designed by Tenerife’s Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables .

Reduce your carbon footprint by tapping into Tenerife's public transport network

The Canary Islands comprise a unique and fragile natural environment, but the roads are often congested, and car rental is pricey because of limited availability, especially in the peak season. With a little planning, you can rein in your carbon footprint by tapping into efficient guagua (bus) services across the island or renting an electric car.

The Titsa Ten+Movil app has a range of bus passes for easy island travel, and you can also buy single-journey tickets on the app. Otherwise, you’ll need cash for most buses. You don't have to use a motor vehicle – exploring by cycling, hiking and kayaking is a delight (and perfect for viewing the dramatic Los Gigantes cliffs) and the capital is also best enjoyed on foot.

Book ahead for Tenerife’s best restaurants

Tenerife is making quite a name for itself on Spain’s gastronomic scene. Tempting offerings swing from fuss-free seafood shacks on the beach and vegan cafes packed with local produce to restaurants serving avant-garde tasting-menus, hidden away in romantic hotels. Reserve a table a few weeks in advance at the fanciest spots, such as Michelin-starred El Rincón de Juan Carlos in Caleta, run by the tinerfeño Padrón brothers, or Martín Berasategui’s M.B. at the Ritz-Carlton Abama, boasting two Michelin stars and headed by respected chef Erlantz Gorostiza.

Expand your horizons to neighboring Canary Islands

With its two international airports and excellent ferry links, Tenerife is the main gateway to the three smaller, less-touristed western Canary Islands – bohemian La Gomera , lush La Palma and rustic El Hierro . Each of these makes a rewarding, slow-moving contrast to Tenerife and can be easily added on as a side trip.

From Los Cristianos in southwest Tenerife, regular ferries run to Santa Cruz de la Palma (3½ hours), El Hierro’s Puerto de la Estaca (2¾ hours) and San Sebastián de la Gomera (1 hour). It’s also possible to day-trip to La Gomera by ferry, though you’ll inevitably end up wishing you could stay longer.

Dress however you like, but respect local attitudes

When it comes to dress, anything goes on this soulful, sun-drenched island, but pack sunscreen, a hat and other protection from the strong rays. Plenty of people go topless on the beach, and lots of nudist strands are dotted around the island. That said, it’s respectful to cover up a little when you head away from the sand – so no bare chests in the town center!

Dress modestly when visiting religious buildings, such as churches or chapels. It’s also impolite to visit churches for tourism during religious services. For buildings that are only open for mass, stop in before the service starts.

Make advance reservations to taste Tenerife's volcanic wines

One of Tenerife’s great joys is discovering the cultural wonderland beyond the Atlantic-washed coast, a sprawl of pastel-walled villages clinging to lush slopes covered in banana-palm plantations. Book a vineyard tour to learn all about the island’s wine-making scene, which revolves around local pre-phylloxera grape varieties and the hugely varied microclimates in these rich, volcanic mountainscapes. Most tinerfeño wine is consumed directly on the island, so sample freely while you’re here and show your support for local winemakers by taking home a bottle or three!

Close to Granadilla de Abona in southwest Tenerife, Bodega Frontos is a sustainably focused, family-run operation with more than 50 years of organic wine-making experience. Grapes are grown up to 1700m (5577ft), making this Europe’s most elevated winery.

Support local producers and craftworkers while in Tenerife

From herb-infused cosmetics to volcanic wines, Tenerife’s most inspired souvenirs revolve around one-of-a-kind gifts that support small-scale producers, independent shops and local island artisans. Start in lively Santa Cruz, where the fabulous TEA gift shop is a great spot to pick up creative pieces such as notebooks, prints and art books with a local twist.

Just across the road, the mid-20th-century Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África is a fresh-food wonderland crammed with Canarian cheeses, North African spices, artisanal olive oils, palm honey and other local favorites. A few streets away, you’ll find more gourmet cheeses with a Canarian focus at Queso Project .

Pilot whales surfacing in open ocean near Tenerife

Do your research on ethical whale-watching in Tenerife

Sprawling across 2000 sq km of Atlantic Ocean, Europe’s first Whale Heritage Site was established in 2021 off the coasts of Tenerife and its sister island La Gomera, highlighting how the Canary Islands are prioritizing responsible whale-watching. The islands' famous underwater residents include bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales.

Before you come, read up on how to be a responsible wildlife tourist , and book your whale-watching trips ahead with a low-impact tour company that has a sustainable ethos and a focus on animal welfare. Led by a switched-on team of marine biologists, Biosean runs small-group expeditions that contribute important research on the local whale populations.

Don’t build stone towers on the beach

In recent years, legions of pebble or stone towers have popped up on beaches around Tenerife, particularly on Adeje ’s Playa El Beril and Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz , with people rushing to share images of the curious structures on social media. Local environmentalists are now campaigning for a ban on these manmade cairns because they disrupt natural coastal ecosystems and can be lethal to local wildlife such as insects, plants, reptiles and birds in a region already under pressure from tourism. Do your part by joining beach clean-ups and by leaving the rocks where they lie.

Pack for the endless array of Canarian microclimates

The Canary Islands are famous for their wonderfully varied microclimates, and nowhere channels this more spectacularly than Tenerife. You can be basking in the sun on a beach on the southwest coast and then an hour later be reaching for a jacket up in the misty mountains.

Pack for a range of temperatures and conditions, and factor in the weather when planning outdoor excursions, particularly high-altitude mountain hikes. Altitude sickness is a potential risk for anyone hiking above 2500m (8200ft), which includes El Teide; the vast majority of visitors have no problems, but take it slowly.

A hiker in a volcanic landscape on El Teide, Tenerife

Be aware of natural dangers on the island

The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the neighboring island of La Palma, which lasted 85 days in 2021, drew global attention to some of the natural challenges faced by the Canary Islands. As well as volcanic activity, limited rainfall can sometimes lead to forest fires during the summer months. In the unlikely event of an emergency, follow advice from local authorities including the Cabildo de Tenerife . There’s a single phone number for all emergencies, 112.

Watch out for rip tides when swimming on Tenerife’s beaches and in its natural pools. The Atlantic can have seriously strong currents, so it’s important to heed local advice; a red flag means it’s unsafe to enter the water. For the natural sea pools, it’s best to visit at low tide because high tides and turbulent weather can make them dangerous.

Keep valuables safe and check your health insurance

Most trips to Tenerife are entirely hassle-free, though like anywhere, petty theft can happen, particularly in bigger towns. Keep an eye on your belongings in tourist-heavy locations such as markets and bus stations and never leave valuables unattended on the beach.

The free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles all EU citizens to healthcare at local cost (which often means no cost) in other EU countries, including Spain. If you’re from a non-EU country, find out whether there’s any reciprocal medical care agreement with Spain; if not, ensure you have suitable health insurance or travel insurance cover.

Can you drink the tap water in Tenerife?

People in the Canary Islands tend to buy bottled water because much of the tap water here is desalinated sea water – it's safe to drink but not particularly pleasant taste-wise. Some hotels and restaurants provide their own large water containers so you can refill reusable bottles, and Tenerife’s airports also have drinking fountains. As of April 2022, all bars and restaurants in Spain (including the Canaries) are legally required to offer free agua de grifo (tap water) for drinking.

NEW in 2020 - Tourist Passes in Tenerife for Public Buses and Tram

tenerife tourist pass bus ticket

Cabildo de Tenerife has announced the launch of tourist passes to encourage visitors to use the public transport network on the island.

The insular counselor for Mobility highlights that this initiative is a tourist attraction that will allow visitors to move around the entire island at a fixed price, which will be more attractive than buying individual tickets.

The Cabildo de Tenerife has created a tourist pass to promote the use of public transport among visitors to the island, offering them the possibility of unlimited travel by trams and buses throughout the island, including the lines to Teno and El Teide.

There will be 2 types of Tenerife Tourist Passes for public transport:

  • Day Pass / Price: 10 Euro
  • Weekly Pass / Price: 50 Euro

Each pass allows for unlimited travel throughout its period of validity.

Each pass will be activated from the first validation and can be purchased by anyone, including residents who want to do so.

The first vice-president of the Cabildo de Tenerife explains that “the island lacked to have specific passes for tourists and these new types of tickets will [...] make it easier for those who visit us since they do not have to worry about rates or payment methods since they already have a fixed price ”.

The authorities also point out that “this is a very powerful way to encourage the use of public transport on the island, where we have a diversity of routes and frequencies that allow tourists to move throughout our geography in a sustainable way, while also caring for the environment ”.

The new payment methods for tourists can be purchased through the Ten + card in the usual network of shops, in the Titsa and Metrotenerife offices, tram ticket vending machines and also in the airports. They can also be paid through the Ten+ app available on Android and iOS and also on the Ten + website .

If you don't want to use the local TITSA buses (guaguas) in Tenerife, you can also rent a car and drive on your own around the island. You can read our dedicated article to learn more about driving in Tenerife ( spoiler alert: it's fun! ).
