I Never Found Neck Pillows Comfortable Until I Tried This $35 Memory Foam Version

It might even make you forget that you’re in the middle seat.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Well, it happened. I’m officially at the age when every long-haul flight leaves me with a massive neck ache. And, after years of insisting that neck pillows aren’t worth the hassle of carrying around the airport, I’ve finally hopped on the bandwagon and now won’t travel without my Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow .

With its ergonomic design, the travel pillow is the only one I’ve tried that simultaneously (and instantly) supports and comforts my neck when I’m sitting upright on planes for five-plus hours flying back and forth from Los Angeles to New York. It features a highly cushioned memory foam core that contours to your neck, as well as strategically raised sides to promote the proper stabilization of your head, neck, and shoulders. As a nervous flier, I never used to get much sleep on airplanes, but incorporating the neck pillow into my in-flight routine has helped me finally catch some Zs.

I’m also a fan of its flattened back design, which aids in stabilizing and supporting your neck while helping you lean against the headrest of your seat in a comfortable way. And, since I’m someone that always runs hot on planes, the Evolution Earth pillow ’s open-neck front ensures that there’s consistent airflow, and I never get too sweaty or overheated while I’m waiting for the air-conditioning to kick in.

But, being the first neck pillow to win me over isn’t the only notable accomplishment of the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow ; it’s also the brand’s first sustainable model. The neck pillow’s plush fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles, and its memory foam cushioning can be recycled. In fact, Cabeau partnered with the eco-friendly organization CleanHub and made the pledge to remove more than 25,000 kilograms of plastic from the ocean.

My only qualm with the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow is its chin strap. Though it’s great at preventing the dreaded bobblehead movement that every flier despises, I find that it’s a bit too restrictive, especially if I’ll be wearing the neck pillow for a long amount of time. But, I’m happy to report that the pillow is still comfy and stays in place without the hook-and-loop chin strap fastened — so much so that I find myself wearing the Evolution Earth pillow when I’m working at my desk or watching T.V. on the couch for pain relief. And, I'm sure it will come in clutch for future road trips.

Staying on theme with its earth-friendly design, the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow is available in four terrestrial colorways: terra (navy-teal), water (royal blue-light blue), fire (red-orange), and wind (black-gray). I have the fire version, which adds a fun pop of color to my all-black carry-on and travel tote.

If you're tired of mid-flight neck aches and pain, take this as your sign to get the Cabeau Evolution Earth Neck Pillow , and keep scrolling to find other game-changing products that will help upgrade your in-flight comfort.

This airplane pillow attaches to your headrest, so I can actually sleep on a plane — even in the middle seat

  • This $40 Cabeau travel pillow has made my economy red-eye flights feel like business class.
  • It attaches to your headrest, so it won't move around even during turbulence and I can finally sleep on the plane — even in the middle seat.
  • It also has an ergonomic design that's more comfortable than other airplane pillows I've used, and rolls up into its own case so I can travel with it easier.

Insider Today

Since business class seats are financially out of reach for many frequent fliers, anyone who's flown economy is familiar with the woes of sleeping on a plane.

I've seen fellow passengers bring inflatable pillows, squishy bean-bag styles, and more, but they all slide around and continuously shift with every turbulent bump. That's why I love the $40 Cabeau Evolution S3 pillow .

This pillow isn't exactly stylish, but when I'm spending 10+ on a flight, I don't care. Now that many airlines are charging extra money to choose a seat before checking in, I feel a sense of dread when I realize I've got a middle seat on my upcoming flight. But with this pillow, I know that I can sleep comfortably in any seat with no fear of slumping down onto my neighbor two minutes after I doze off.

This travel pillow can be secured to your headrest so it won't move around as you sleep

The Evolution S3 pillow looks somewhat similar to many other U-shaped airplane pillows. However, it has a handful of extra features that make a big difference.

There's no much set-up involved in using the Evolution S3 pillow – it's a pillow, after all – but it does include two straps that you can secure around your seat's headrest (even if you're stuck in the dreaded middle seat). It attaches around the headrest for adults or around the base of the headrest for kids and shorter travelers. Because the straps are elastic and secured with Velcro, it can wrap around just about any size headrest – it's definitely "one-size-fits-all" and I didn't have any problems using it on my flights. The overall experience is much more comfortable than using an inflatable pillow.

One design consideration though is that if your seat doesn't have a headrest at all, the traps on this pillow might not stretch wide enough. If that's the case, you can still use the pillow like you would any other, and I'd bet the ergonomic design would still work better than your other travel pillows.

As for the visuals, the pillow comes in a variety of colors. The " Cardinal " and " Galaxy " color options are probably the most attention-grabbing while the gray and black will likely blend in a bit better with your seat's headrest. I prefer the brighter ones as I tend to leave things on planes fairly often and those stand out a bit more.

It's also comfortable and can be rolled up in its own travel case

Instead of being a lumpy, uncomfortable pillow that gives you a few hours of sporadic sleep, the memory foam makes it actually comfortable. You can rest nearly as well in your airplane seat as you can at home on your couch.

During my testing, neck pain or a falling pillow never woke me up. Instead of nodding off and falling over on my neighbor – or, worse, not falling asleep at all on a red-eye – I fell asleep fast and stayed asleep. If you've got an eye mask and earplugs or headphones, you can basically settle in for the night. It's almost like having a cushy business-class seat — except that it only costs $40.

When you're all ready to deplane, the pillow can be rolled up "like a cinnamon roll" (according to the instructions) and slipped into the accompanying storage bag. You can then clip the bag around your suitcase, saving storage space in your carry-on bag. It was easy to fit in the case on my first try.

The area around your neck is raised higher to keep your head from rolling as you sleep

One of my favorite features, aside from the ability to stay upright via the headrest attachment, is the focus on keeping your head and neck straight.

The inside of the U-shape (the area of the pillow closest to your neck) is raised higher than the rest of the pillow to help avoid head bobbing, which can wake up even the heaviest sleeper. This pillow is also flat in the back, which might not sound important, but it is.

Normal airplane pillows can push your neck out and make it difficult to find a comfortable fit. But because this one is flat in the back, it sits right against the headrest, keeping your spine aligned and upright instead of being pitched forward.

If you like to wear a mask or listen to music when you sleep, you'll love the roomy side pocket on the pillow. I stored my eye mask in it, and when I was ready to sleep, I swapped it for my phone to avoid dropping it while I slept. This is also a good strategy if you still use headphones with a cord like me, so you don't have to worry about the cord dangling or getting tangled in your blanket.

The material might make your neck feel warm, but the removable cover is machine-washable

A potential downside of the Evolution S3 pillow is that it might make your neck a little warm, which I experienced.

I'm almost always freezing on planes, but I had my male travel companion test it out too just to confirm. While he agreed that the pillow was far more comfortable than expected, he also reported waking up with some neck sweat. Fortunately, the cover is removable and can be machine-washed, so even if you do happen to overheat, you can wash it when you get home (or in your hotel room sink.)

While I wouldn't consider it a major issue, it's worth noting that the pillow will get smushed when it's rolled up and in the case, so it'd take a few minutes to fully expand again. For that reason, Cabeau recommends using the case only during travel and not storing the pillow rolled up.

I've never slept better on a plane, and even my seat neighbors have commented on the ingenious design

This pillow is an affordable way to help make your next flight feel far more comfortable than you ever thought possible, even if you're in a middle seat in economy.

Most airplane pillows are generic inflatable or bean-bag style options sold at airport stores and slide around when you need it most. In terms of innovative styles that prop your head up, the Trtl Travel Pillow wraps around your neck so you can customize the fit. It's about $10 cheaper and easier to travel with as it doesn't include a foam base like this one, but it doesn't connect to headrests and doesn't have storage pockets, which are features I found to be key with the Evolution S3 pillow .

I've never slept better on a plane than with the Evolution S3 pillow, and I've even had a seat neighbors comment on the ingenious design. Yes, it looks a little weird, but who cares if you wake up on the other side of the world feeling well-rested and ready to go?

My Grandparents Have Been Traveling for 60 Years — Here Are the 11 Comfy Items They Always Pack As Retirees

Keep reading for travel advice from my grandparents who say they’re in the “golden age” of their life.

Being a travel writer, it only makes sense that my passion for exploration runs in the family — after all, where else could I have inherited from? Both sets of my grandparents are avid travelers, taking on a number of international trips per year to destinations like Thailand , Italy , France , and so much more.

My travel-loving grandparents have entered the “golden age” of their life, as my grandpa refers to it, enjoying retired life by exploring the world . But of course, that ability to travel with ease — and joy — comes with a fool-proof list of travel accessories to make the journey as smooth as humanly possible. With so much experience under their belts, I’ve tapped my grandparents to curate a list of their travel must-haves, including everything from their favorite slip-on sneakers to a portable walking cane in case of emergencies. Keep reading for their go-tos starting at just $5.

Zomake Portable Metal Shoe Horn

Buy on Amazon

“I don’t go anywhere without my pocket shoe horn,” my grandpa told me on our phone call the other night. I should’ve known it was going to be his first bit of advice to share with other retiree travelers, because for my entire life he’s had shoe horns littered all over his house (and in his bags) to assist him in putting on his loafers, sneakers, and other shoes everywhere from the front door to the rental cabin to the doctor’s office. He sent me the link to this handy $5 portable one, and even though I’m just 24 I’m considering adding it to my cart to make my life a bit easier, too.

Kizik Madrid Slip-on Sneakers

My other grandpa doesn’t keep a shoe horn on him anymore because he has replaced nearly all of his shoes with these slip-on sneakers that he calls “the best invention since sliced bread,” and says that he “wishes he’d had a pair his entire life.” His devout love for these sneakers has also turned my grandma into a convert, and now the two happily sport their Kiziks all over Thailand walking from food stall to food stall.

Samsonite Freeform 21-inch Carry-on Suitcase

My grandparents don’t have patience for heavy, squeaky luggage, and that’s why they swear by this Samsonite carry-on that comes equipped with four smooth-gliding wheels and a spacious-yet-compact build to keep all of their belongings conveniently packed. This suitcase weighs in at just over 6 pounds, which means that they don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy bag and risk hurting themselves. They each have one of their own — and they’ll probably never travel with any other bag.

Vera Bradley Triple Zip Hipster Crossbody Bag

Buy on verabradley.com

As much as my grandmother loves her fancy shoulder bags, she says they’re “too heavy for long trips now.” That’s why she now travels with a lightweight crossbody bag that’s still spacious enough to hold onto her phone, passport, and other personal belongings but won’t weigh her down. She loves this Vera Bradley one for its “fashionable look and ability to keep [her] things close.”

Auvon Travel Pills Organizer

When you’re traveling, it’s important to keep all of your pills in one convenient spot. My grandparents have one of these boxes that not only organizes all of their medications by the day of the week, but also by the time of day (morning and night) to streamline taking — and remembering — your medications. My grandma also advised me to tell other travelers to “pack an extra few days worth of medication just in case your trip gets delayed or extended.” Oh, and this set just so happens to be on sale for $8 for Prime Members.

Ostrich Pillow Compression Socks

My grandparents have found that compression socks help relieve some of the discomfort and swelling that comes from prolonged restricted movement by stimulating circulation in your legs. And while they’ve tried a variety of pairs (including this Charmking Compression Sock Set of Eight ) their current favorite is this one from Ostrich Pillow that I introduced them to. They absolutely love these socks for their “impressive comfortable compression,” so much so that they feel confident enough in them to brave our upcoming 24+-hour travel day to Thailand.

Vaunn Portable Folding Cane

My grandpa sometimes needs extra assistance walking, especially during long travel days, and that’s why he always keeps this convenient portable folding cane on him. We got it for him last year, and since then he keeps it on him if his knee acts up or needs some help with balance. He finds that it's better than traveling with his typical cane because he doesn’t have to worry about “a larger one taking up too much space in the airplane cabin or through TSA.”

Techshare Magnifying Glass and Light Keychain

On a recent visit with my grandpa, he pulled out this handy dandy two-in-one magnifying glass and light at the dimly lit restaurant we were at and used it to read the menu and order his meal. I asked him when he started carrying it around, and he said his friend recommended it a year ago for reading handouts and other information while on-the-go. I found it utterly genius, and even better that it hooks onto his keys — all for a mere $8. It’s now a must-have for him that he can’t recommend enough to make travel smooth for other retirees.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow

I gave my grandma this neck pillow last Christmas to replace her old one, and when I asked her how it held up, she said it’s so comfortable that as soon as she sits down on a flight, she immediately falls asleep and stays asleep the entire time. She’s also a fan of its convenient carrying bag that she said allows her “to keep it in her purse to rest in the car” as well.

Loft Drop Shoulder Cardigan

Buy on loft.com

Both sets of my grandparents live in South Florida, and between the humid heat and blasting indoor AC, a good cardigan is an everyday and travel staple for them both. They both love styles like this lightweight one from Loft (and both happen to absolutely love everything from Loft) to add a bit of cozy warmth no matter where they are. Even better, this stylish one is on sale for $33 right now.

Quince Women’s Linen Pants

Buy on quince.com

Toward the end of my call with my grandma, I asked her if there was any other advice that she’d  like to share, and she said that travelers “shouldn’t waste their time with jeans or uncomfortable pants,” and instead should opt for a pair of pull-on pants that go on easy while remaining comfortable and breathable. She actually found this specific $40 pair from Quince in an advertisement online and has been obsessed ever since. I mean really, she has three pairs and counting.

Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. If you plan on traveling, you will still need these things, which can be particularly difficult when the place you visit isn't exactly baby-proof. A pack n play is a play space, a bassinet, and a diaper changing station, making it the perfect solution. Whether driving or flying, you can fold them up and tuck them away in an easy-to- carry case for travel.

CAN YOU GATE CHECK A PACK-N-PLAY?

When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. You can also buy a solid color and use fabric markers to decorate and make it unique, so they’ll want to pull it. I bought mine from Amazon for $20, but you can sometimes find them used or even borrow from a friend. The toddler suitcases contained small toys, coloring books, storybooks, and a tablet to help keep the kids entertained during the flight. Each of the toddlers having their own suitcase that contained their belongings helped make traveling memorable, and they

Toddler pulling her suitcase through the airport.

To make things even easier on everyone, all three kids’ clothes were in one checked bag equals less luggage to wait for after the flight.

I held my infant in a wrap-style baby carrier to allow for hands-free, ensure that the baby was always near, and help keep the baby calm through the noisy space. The long piece of stretchy fabric was easily adjustable to different body types, which made it great for traveling, especially when visiting family.

Infant in wrap-style carrier while traveling by air.

When traveling by airplane, some parents rent baby equipment at their destination. Whether a stroller, crib, car seat, high chair, or pack-n-play, these rentals get pricey - upwards of $25 a day per item. If you plan a little, you can bring your own gear and minimize what you carry through the airport! I always brought a stroller as it provided transportation for kids that get tired, a place to put the small suitcases, a bag of snacks we purchased before the ride, and the diaper bag. At your gate, check in at the desk to receive a tag for gate-checking a stroller. Your stroller will be waiting for you when you land at your destination.

Cabeau

“We think differently from our competitors, which has allowed us to lead the way in developing, redefining and elevating the travel experience and remain true to our entrepreneurial spirit.”

David Sternlight

It all began with a quest for a neck pillow that actually works…

cabeau travel pillow bag

During his career playing professional basketball for Maccabi Tel Aviv, David Sternlight was on the road a lot. While seeing the world was always an adventure, he found most methods of travel to be cramped and uncomfortable – especially at 6’8 tall. Determined to create a better travel experience for himself and others, David began to design the first travel neck pillow that actually works. In 2009, after months of development, the revolutionary Cabeau Evolution Pillow® was born. Cabeau’s patented travel pillows, comfort products, and innovative accessories can be found in over 110 countries worldwide. Our products have set new industry standards for superior craftsmanship, quality, and comfort. We are honored to have received numerous travel industry awards that recognize our commitment to excellence in providing our customers with innovative travel accessories as well as our dedication to improving the world around us. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that the same effort and energy goes into our new products that went into our original, groundbreaking Cabeau Evolution Pillow. Innovations in our extended product line are inspired by our customers, who have shared with us what they like, what works, and what would further enhance their travels. We provide a carefully curated range of products that are guaranteed to make your travel experience better.
