Calbayog City | Samar’s Brightest Waray Sunshine

  • in Destinations , Philippines

Calbayog City is one town I am honestly having a hard time describing. I am groping for the best word that perfectly fits that feeling of being in a hustling urban setting yet it secretly traps you with whimsical charm & dawdling velocity.

I have visited Calbayog City quite a number of times since I first came in 2012. But back then, I was only there for work & barely had the time to experience it. Other than snippets of the plaza, the church, tinapa & seafood, everything else was all about business meetings.

I haven’t been back since typhoon Yolanda struck Samar & Leyte in late 2013. But I have always been in contact with some local friends on social media. Seeing their posts about how lovely it has become after the tragedy made me yearn to visit it again.

Playing tourist in Calbayog City

Finally, after 4 years I have visited Calbayog City again as a stopover in my recent Luzon to Mindanao solo roadtrip. And this time I was able to experience it as a tourist on a real holiday! No work—-just loads of fun exploring its sights & yes, feasting on local food.

Spanish Quarter

Spanish heritage towns litter around the country. And Calbayog City being one of the Spanish settlements established in 17 th century by Jesuit missionaries is home to many memories of its colonial past.

The Spanish Quarter, tucked right at the heart of the city is a small district filled with rows of heritage buildings. It is laid out in quadricula where the church of Sts. Peter & Paul stands as the town’s focal point since the 1800s.

Around it are houses architectured after principalia mansions & bahay-na-bato, the old square now called Sacred Heart Plaza, the school, the city hall & the first Spanish structure that now houses the City Tourism Office & museum.

Calbayog Zipline & Malajog Ridge Nature Park

No doubt, Calbayog City has the most scenic zipline spots in the country. At 750 meters, it may not be the longest but the view over the turquoise waters of Samar Sea is absolutely fantastic.

The adventure begins with a 915-meter trek along the steep ridges of Malajog. From its scenic summit, a cable connects it to Daraga Islet below. And if you fancy those James Bond-ish maneuvers, this one’s a sure delight.

Malajog Beach

Malajog Beach is where everyone goes especially during weekends. Its shore isn’t swathed with white sand but it definitely has sparkling blue sea perfect for your beach bumming adventure under the Waray sunshine.

Bolongto River Cruise

If you prefer the serene scene, take a cruise down Bolongto River. This 45-minute trip takes you along the hardly seen side of Calbayog City. It is fringed with mangroves, nipa & a massive marble wall. With all of its pretty stillness, this river makes it a wonderful spot for stand-up paddle boarding.

City Forest & Malopalo Marble Park

Framed by lush emerald forest, the Malopalo Marble Park is a sight to behold. The stark palettes of glistening marble walls against the deep hues of greens & blues make it a real standout especially from afar. If spelunking is your game, this place offers a real good caving experience too.

Isla Pawikan & Biyatungan Island

Just across Malajog Beach are Isla Pawikan & Biyatungan Island currently being explored for snorkeling & diving. Initial underwater surveys showed a luminescent underworld teeming with corals & other exotic marine life.

Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Grotto

Since it came about in 2010, the grotto of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary in Malajog is one of the most visited sights in Calbayog City. This Marian center is a retreat site with a chapel & a simple accommodation for guests.

Nijaga Park

Named after a local hero, Benedicto Nijaga, this riverside park comes to life at night. As dusk falls, everyone gathers here for streetfood. What one thing beautiful about it is they put order & sanitation facilities ensuring a safe venue to enjoy streetfood-dining experience.

Chasing Waterfalls

Calbayog City is also known as a waterfall city with lots of cascades to chase. Among the most popular falls are Bangon, Tarangban & Pan-as. Bangon Falls in Brgy. San Joaquin is the most visited because of its accessibility & multi-tiered chutes.

Surely, no one goes hungry in Calbayog City. Being a coastal town, expect an overload of seafood dishes to fill your gastronomic wanderings. But above its famed Waray cuisine, the city is known for having the best tinapa or smoked fish in the country.

Another must-try here too is Humba de Calbayog, a sweet-salty pork stew uniquely prepared with peanuts.

Calbayog City is the center of trade, commerce, education & tourism in Samar Province . It has a small domestic airport servicing daily flights from Manila & Cebu. It also boasts of premium hotels like Ciriaco & Baypark.

For its secret trappings of quaintness, adventure, convenience & gentility, Calbayog City is truly one town I will never grow tired visiting over & over.

How to get there

Calbayog City Airport

The city of Calbayog is known as the gateway to Samar province.

There are flights directly from Clark Airport to the city of Calbayog, which takes about an hour and a 40 minutes. PAL Flight from Clark to Calbayog leaves Clark International Airport at 8:00am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

There are also buses plying to Calbayog from Manila. The bus trip takes about 20 hours or close to a full day and will board a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) ship.

If traveling from other parts of Visayas, like Tacloban City, there are van or bus trips that go directly to Calbayog. This trip takes about three hours. Alternatively, there are overnight boat trips that travel from Cebu to Calbayog. This trip takes roughly eight hours.

  • Cokaliong Shipping Lines has an overnight ferry to/from Cebu City three times a week.

Where to go

Dubbed the “City of Falls,” Calbayog boasts of an array of falls and caves that should not be missed when visiting the city.

Bangon Falls

Bangon Falls is a must-see when visiting the city. It has four layers of a spectacular curtain of water cascading into a stream below. For adventure-seekers, hike to the top and enjoy the circular pond, where you can go swimming and even diving.

How to get there: To get to Bangon Falls (also known to locals as Bugtong Falls), take a motorcycle ride of about 15 minutes. Visitors can also choose to hike to the center of Tinaplacan, where the falls is located. The hike takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on your fitness capacity.

Tarangban Falls

Tarangban Falls is another majestic body of water you should see in Calbayog. Located near Bangon Falls, Tinaplacan is famous for crystal clear waters cascading from an interesting rock formation.

How to get there: From Barangay Tinaplacan, Tarangban falls is a one-hour hike. Or make a day out of it and hike there from Bangon falls – that will take 30 minutes.

Guinogo-an Cave is a natural tunnel famous among thrill-seekers. Its uneven ceiling makes the spelunking journey an adventure, as some points of the tunnel become narrower and is just enough for a single person to pass through. Not recommended for the claustrophobic!

How to get there: Ride a tricycle from Barangay Cabugawan, which takes 30 minutes.

For beach lovers, visit Malajog Beach, which draws both locals and tourists alike. It’s different from the many famous beaches in the country (its sand is gray, unlike the typically sought-after white sand beaches), but the must-see here is Daraga islet. Here, you can go snorkeling, diving, and kayaking.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral - Calbayog City Travel Guide

Isla Pawikan is another place for snorkeling and diving, with its clear waters housing beautiful sea corals and white pebbles. Located in Tinambacan, its tagged Turtle Island because of its turtle-shaped island.

What to eat

A trip is not complete without sampling the local fare. Calbayog City definitely has some things to offer for the traveling foodie!

tinapa or smoked fish

Sample its local tinapa or smoked fish. The secret to their tinapa is in its freshness, having come from the daily catch from the Samar seas. Most shops and markets in Calbayog also offer vacuum-packed tinapa, which is best-brought home as pasalubong.

Seafood is another popular fare in Calbayog, and the best place to dine here is at Kamayan sa Carayman. An alfresco restaurant where, as the name suggests, people dine using their hands (or kamay), Kamayan sa Carayman is famous for its chili crabs and shrimp dishes. Fresh seafood are also grilled here, best enjoyed with a bowl of steaming clam soup!

Bangon-Bugtong Falls: One of the Most Majestic Scenic Spots in Calbayog City

Bangon-Bugtong Falls is located in Barangay San Joaquin, Calbayog City, Samar. Calbayog City also called the “City of Waterfalls” because there are more than 20 waterfalls in the area. One of those is the Bangon-Bugtong Falls. Traveling to this waterfall from Calbayog entails a 1-hour and 15-minute ride to Barangay Tinaplacan, and then a 3-kilometer walk from the highway. You can also opt to ride a habal-habal, a motorcycle with extended seats and an extra shock absorber for passing through rougher terrains and steep mountain roads.

Bangon-Bugtong Falls has an estimated height of 60 meters. It is a system of cascades that you need to walk on to get to the main falls. Like any other waterfall, it has some slippery parts covered with moss so you have to be careful in your ascent. At the topmost part is a circular pond about 30 meters in diameter which is wide enough for swimming and deep enough for diving. The water seems to come from an endless stream and it forms a swirling path as it falls down the rock formations. It is a very refreshing sight!

Bangon-Bugtong is not only a tourist spot but also a potential source of power for Calbayog city and its neighboring localities.

An ordinance was declared the Barangay Tinaplacan-Bangon Falls Junction as “Tourism cum Power Sources” of the City of Calbayog. Included here is the institution of measures for the protection of the road and the environment. Violators shall be penalized.

This city ordinance, which was sponsored by Honorable Susano D. Salurio, also regulates the use of barangay roads such as the Tinambacan-Bangon Falls Junction, by strictly prohibiting vehicles that weigh more than eight tons from passing through said barangay roads. Only light vehicles like multicab and habal-habal are allowed to enter or pass through the said roads if the purpose is to haul agricultural products such as copra, rootcrops, fruits and vegetable. Heavy equipments used for the construction of government projects are exempted.

For the purpose of protecting the source of power for Calbayog City, the ordinance strictly prohibits the cutting of trees of any variety, species and size within the perimeter of Bangon Falls. The ordinance also made it unlawful to conduct slash and burn farming or kaingin, in any part, section or tributaries leading to the fall as these will spell a tremendous effect on the volume of water that may prejudice the source of power (Mini-Hydro) and destroy the beauty of the Falls.

The Barangay Officials of Barangay Tinaplacan, with the assistance of the Philippine National Police, were deputized to supervise and enforce the provision of the Ordinance.

Other destinations

There are also some must-visit destinations near the Bangon-Bugtong Falls like the Guinogo-an and Lungsod Caves in Barangay Longsob. It is a 1-hour drive and less than an hour of hiking. A smaller waterfall called Veriato Falls are just a few kilometers far from Bangon-Bugtong. You can ride a habal-habal or walk to get there.
