Yale Veterans Association, Connecticut VA hospital host Yale Day of Service program

campus visit yale

Yale alumni, staff, students, and affiliates recently participated in a  Yale Day of Service (YDOS) program organized by the  Yale Veterans Association , an alumni shared interest group, in collaboration with the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Service at the West Haven VA Medical Center in West Haven, Conn.

This annual program, first held over a decade ago, offered volunteers the opportunity to connect and engage with visually impaired military veterans who were at the West Haven VA undergoing rehabilitative and adaptive training. Volunteers worked with VA staff to arrange a barbecue, social activities, and interactive games for the veterans. They also received information and instruction on ways to best communicate with and assist people with visual disabilities.

Glen Gechlik ’05 MBA, the associate chief of staff of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, a board member of the Yale Veterans Association, and a U.S. Air Force Veteran, who spearheaded this YDOS event in 2012 and continues to serve as the program coordinator thinks that all parties involved with this service initiative benefit from the long-standing collaboration.

“Volunteers get to interact with veterans and see the human side of the people who serve in our armed services,” he said. “There are volunteers who are veterans themselves, but there are also those who have not served and do not have veterans in their families, and this is an excellent opportunity to help veterans in need.”

He added that the program was appreciated by veterans, volunteers, and organizers alike.

“This was a lot of fun and the veterans really enjoyed it,” he said, mentioning that the program could be expanded further. “There is always room for more people if they want to volunteer.”

Will Clancy, a Yale Law School student and retired U.S. Army sergeant major whose military career included service in the Special Forces (Green Berets), said that volunteering with YDOS at the West Haven VA held special meaning for him.

“I participate as a way to give back to the two institutions that have had the greatest impact on my life—the U.S. military and Yale,” he said. “For me, it was a grounding experience, a reminder that Yale, and other great American institutions, was founded to make the world a better place—and we have an ongoing responsibility to engage in our local communities toward that end.”

Clancy, who hails from Saratoga County in upstate New York and comes from a family with a rich history of military service going back to World War II, noted what an honor it was to engage and connect with the veterans.

“I hope they understand how much our community appreciates their service,” he said. “And that they feel seen and valued, particularly by a younger generation of veterans.”

Rick Tilghman ’67, a U.S Marine Corps veteran whose service included a tour in Vietnam, was unambiguous in expressing his motivation for volunteering at this YDOS.

“I decided to participate because the program was focused on veterans,” he said.

Tilghman, a managing director at a service-disabled veteran-owned banking and financial services firm based in Stamford, Conn., said he was inspired by the openness and adaptability of the veterans.

“I was impressed with the comradery of the veterans and their eagerness to play cornhole,” he said. “I hope they had a fun time outside of their ‘home room’ and enjoyed talking with us.”

Marty Platt, a U.S. Army veteran who also served in Vietnam and is a retired Yale staff member who continues to work at the university on a casual basis, echoed the importance of supporting fellow veterans.

campus visit yale

“As a veteran, I feel it is important to reach out and help out any and all veterans, especially veterans with disabilities,” he said. “The time with the veterans, hearing their stories and learning about their military experiences, was an amazing time.”

Platt added that interacting with the veterans at the West Haven VA served as a reminder of the hardships and sacrifices that sometimes comes with military service.

“Sitting with the veterans and listening to the bantering that went on between them, there is some goodness in watching that,” he said. “To me, it was a reminder that whatever I am going through is nothing compared to what they deal with on a daily basis.”

Tamika Hollis, a community engagement project manager at the Yale School of Medicine and the spouse of a retired U.S. Army veteran related how much she appreciated participating in this YDOS at the West Haven VA for the first time.

campus visit yale

“I learned and laughed, and felt connected to the veterans in the few hours we were together,” she said. “I also gained insight into the unique challenges they face daily—witnessing their resilience and determination left a profound impact on me.”

Hollis, whose father-in-law was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, emphasized the value that could be derived from talking to and learning from military veterans.

“From my conversations with the veterans, I received from them the invaluable reminder to never take anything for granted and approach life with gratitude for the opportunities and privileges that we often overlook,” she said.

Having participated in other YDOS programs in previous years, Hollis added that the benefits of volunteering reverberate beyond the immediate parties.

“Volunteering for the Yale Day of Service not only serves the needs of the organizations involved, it also fosters a deeper connection to the larger community,” she said.

Susan Caplan ’10 PhD, whose late father was a World War II veteran who, after being wounded in France, was sent to Yale for a crash course in Japanese and was later stationed in prisoner-of-war camps in Korea, recounted the bond she shared with Larry, a retired veteran with 30 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps.

campus visit yale

“I spent the most time talking with him because he was wearing a sweatshirt from a university where I previously worked, so we immediately had that connection,” she said. “And what made the event impactful for me was the chance to connect with people whose lived experiences were very different from my own.”

Caplan expressed her hope that the veterans enjoyed meeting and getting to know her and the other volunteers as much as they enjoyed interacting with them.

“I hope their experience was similar to mine,” she said. “That through humor, shared stories, and gingerly discussing politics – one of my favorite topics – that we enjoyed meeting and spending time with one another!”

According to Mara Balk, who as associate director of alumni engagement at the Yale Alumni Association serves as the staff point person for YDOS, the Yale Day of Service constitutes a natural extension of Yale’s mission to educate and cultivate global leaders.

“Service is a key pillar in the mission of Yale as an institution that encourages members of the community to become active, productive members of society,” she said. “The Yale Day of Service helps foster relationships that lead to meaningful connections among alumni, with their communities, and to the benefit of the University.”

Balk emphasized that service and contributing to causes greater than oneself can be highly rewarding experiences that often yield strong societal returns in the long term.

“First and foremost, I hope volunteers have a positive experience with their service projects,” she said. “And that these positive experiences lead to others, and that the Yale Day of Service can both plant seeds and cultivate growth over time.”

Yale Student Found Inside The Wall of Multi Million Dollar Research Lab on Campus Rotten Mango

There’s a boring red brick building in the middle of Yale University’s campus. If you walk past it you might think it’s an administrative office. It looks - boring.  But if you look closely - there are 75 CCTV cameras pointed directly at the building. Covering every square inch of the exterior. Why would they need so much security for a university building? It is the Animal Research Laboratory. It houses over 4000 research mice and has tens of millions of dollars of research experiments being conducted inside the brick walls.  It is one of the most secure buildings on campus.  Till a brilliant Yale graduate student disappears inside.  She walks in.  Never walks out.  She is nowhere to be found in the building - or at least that’s what the authorities initially thought.  But have they checked the walls? Four Graduating Students Receive Dean’s Mission & Impact Award

The students were recognized for their contributions to the Yale SOM and New Haven communities.

Four members of the Class of 2024 have been selected as recipients of the Dean’s Mission & Impact Award, Dean Kerwin K. Charles announced this week. The Mission & Impact Award has been presented annually since 2021 to students who during their time at Yale SOM have embodied the school’s mission to educate leaders for business and society through their contributions to the community.

“Selecting the honorees for the Mission & Impact Award has given me a welcome opportunity to reflect on the many ways in which members of the Class of 2024 have made a difference at Yale SOM, in New Haven, and in our society at large,” Charles said. “I am confident, that like generations of SOM alumni, they will continue to serve as leaders who consider the impact of their decisions on their communities.”

The 2024 recipients of the Dean’s Mission & Impact Award are:

  • Joseph Raff ’24, a graduate of the full-time MBA program, who advocated for changes to compensation for student teaching assistants. “His thoughtful leadership among students and continual dialog with school leadership regarding this important structural change with deep and broad implications for the university and the school deeply impressed many members of the SOM community,” Charles wrote in an email to the community.
  • Nicola Divan ’24 , a graduate of the Master of Advanced Management program, who represented his classmates as the MAM Student Government representative. Divan, Charles wrote, “has helped ensure the incorporation into the full life and breadth of the school of all our different degree programs, nationalities, and backgrounds—especially for his fellow MAMs.”
  • Leigh Bushnell ’24 and Alice Mao ’24, both graduates of the full-time MBA program, and the organizers of the Young Women’s Leadership Launch , which brings young women from New Haven to the Yale campus for a day-long conference giving them leadership skills and introducing them to professional career paths. “Student involvement with New Haven is of the utmost importance to me, and I am delighted by their efforts to lead the way for themselves and others for such engagement,” Charles wrote.

In recognition of the recipients, the school will make contributions to impactful local organizations of their choice.

Statement on cross campus encampment.

Late this afternoon, student protestors calling for Yale to divest from military weapons manufacturers set up tents on Cross Campus (the lawn in front of Sterling Memorial Library) and began chanting and blocked walkways. This space is adjacent to residential colleges, where many students are studying for final exams. Student protestors have since been asked to remove these tents as they violate the university’s policy, and they have been reminded of the university's policies on the use of outdoor space, postering and chalking, and the use of amplified sound. As President Salovey  outlined  in his message to the Yale community last week, Yale fully supports peaceful protests and freedom of speech, but it does not tolerate the breaking of its policies, which are designed to keep the university functioning and protect the safety and welfare of the entire Yale community. Administrators have communicated these policies and the possible disciplinary actions directly to the protest marshals in person and in writing.

Students who continue to occupy Cross Campus without regard for university policies risk university discipline, arrest, or re-arrest. Discipline could include suspension.

These actions by students echo a similar protest on Beinecke Plaza less than a week ago. In that case, students also erected tents. Students were told repeatedly that their actions violated university policies and, after they refused to comply, the university  cleared the site on April 22.

Yale provides detailed guidance on  free expression ,  peaceable assembly , and requesting the use of  on-campus outdoor spaces . These policies state that permission must be applied for and obtained before groups may conduct their events in any outdoor space on campus or erect or place any structure, wall, barrier, tent, sculpture, artwork, or other object on university outdoor space.  Secretary and Vice President for University Life Kimberly Goff-Crews outlined and clarified these policies in an  April 22 message  to the community.

Since the protests began, the university and the Yale Police Department have worked to reduce the likelihood of confrontations and arrests.

New York Police Department officers load arrested protesters from Columbia University onto a bus, on Tuesday in New York.

New York City officials say nearly half of the 282 people arrested at pro-Palestinian protests on two campuses this past week are not currently affiliated with either school.

The arrest breakdown was released on Thursday by the New York City Police Department and Mayor Eric Adams following mounting pressure for Adams to reveal how many of those arrested at Columbia University and The City College of New York were students after his repeated claims that "outside agitators" guided the protests that led to the arrests.

City officials said 29% of the 112 people arrested at a protest at Columbia on Tuesday were not affiliated with the school. At the City College protest, 60% of the 170 arrested were not affiliated with the school, according to the city's press release .

Police were sent to Columbia University at the request of school administrators , who had said protesters' occupation of Hamilton Hall was led by individuals not affiliated with Columbia.

As students at campuses across the country protest Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza, with many demanding their universities divest from Israel , school officials have requested police action. More than 2,100 people have been arrested at pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses in recent weeks. But officials in some cities have refused calls from school administrators to disband police to campus protests.

Adams told NPR on Thursday that he sent police to Columbia after learning that "one of the outside agitators' husband was arrested for federal terrorism charges."

NYC mayor says 'outside agitators' are co-opting Columbia protests—students disagree

He called that the "tipping point," adding "I knew I could not sit back and state that I'm going to allow this to continue to escalate."

Nahla Al-Arian, the person he was referring to, told The Associated Press that the mayor had misrepresented her husband's history and her role in the protest.

After a mass of demonstrators marched from Columbia to nearby City College on Tuesday evening, university public safety officers made 25 arrests before calling in the NYPD, which made additional arrests. Police said school officials made the call in response to "violence and vandalism, not in response to peaceful protest."

Students and onlookers have criticized the heavy use of police force at the Manhattan campuses — and at other schools .

City officials have not released further identifying information about the list of individuals arrested at Tuesday's campus protests.

"We turned everything over to the school, and it is up to the school to determine if they're going to release the names of students and non-students," Mayor Adams told NY1's morning show on Thursday.

The city also said that protesters' refusal to speak with police has hindered the arrest identification process.

"Most arrested did not cooperate with the NYPD and would not provide information — slowing down the process of identifying whether they had any affiliation with Columbia or CCNY," read the city's press release.

A spokesperson for the mayor's office told NPR that, for the arrested protesters who did not provide their names, the city worked with school officials who determined affiliation with Columbia or CCNY using their mugshots. NPR has reached out to both schools for clarification on their processes.
