How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

We sailed on one of the last voyages of an older ship which is to replaced in November 2023 and some aspects of the vessel are a bit tired and outdated. That didn't detract from our enjoyment of the whole reef cruising experience.

The ship is well designed for its task of reef exploring. It's small size means the passengers all get to know one another and the friendly, well skilled and enthusiastic Fijian crew made the week a wonderful experience.

The ship is showing its age. The food offered is a little repetitive. Dietary offerings, labelling and understanding are a bit hit and miss. Internet service is very patchy and often unavailable. No weather updates. Eating dinner while the local villagers watch is not comfortable.

Moving hotel. Itinerary and destinations are great.

Frankly, for the money you pay, we'd expect more, but we are europeans, comparing to what we'd get and expect in Europe. On the other hand, the cruise was "all-inclusive" (except drinks) which means shore & snorkeling excursions were all included in the rate. These are often excluded and quite pricey on regular big ocean cruise-lines, so in the end of the day it is difficult to comment on the price-value ratio. What we didn't like is that they had made some last minute itinerary changes that had not been communicated in advance, and that was also an important reason we chose this cruise vs. staying at in an island resort. Blue Lagoon was closed for filming a movie (for sure they had known about this for a long time, hardly a movie studio would have booked it with 2 months notice), and then we also missed snorkeling with mantas in the Manta Bay passage, because the route did not coincide with hight ties. Mantas only come there during high ties it seems. For a company that has been operating cruises in this area for so many years this is hardly news, this is biology, so they should plan their itinerary based on ties, specially if they use this in their marketing. Basically the main point of this cruise is snorkeling. Also, most guests were quite experiences snorkelers, or atleast i got that impression, but still the crew was very strict about safety. Snorkeling in one of the best sports (atleast what they had told us previously) was cancelled because they thought the waves were too high. In my opinion not, we could have easily tried and made up our own decision. Instead they took it to another point where there was nothing more than sand. Seem they had no plan b. Nonetheless, there were a few quite good snorkeling spots during the trip that we enjoyed, with diverse landscapes of soft and hard corals and fish, and that was what we were after.

Good location, obviously. It is a cruise that takes you close to the "best spots" The overall experience was good, because I knew the ship had seen its best days already, but eveything was clean and comfy, and the food was okey. Good choice if you like meeting and talking to new people, because over a few days, you will eventually get to know most people by their faces. We chose this cruise mainly for the snorkeling, and got 1-2 snorkeling tours per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

We had brown sludgy water on several days when the hot water system broke down. The standard of the rooms was below expectation with rust and deteriorating prior repairs evident.

The crew are fantastic with nightly entertainment and cheery attitudes at all times. Lots of fun.

The snorkelling locations are amazing. The real value of this trip is being able to go to remote locations and keep moving to new beaches and reefs.

The a la carte meals could have been better in the standard of the food, which was not the case of the buffet meals - these were superb! The tables seemed to be served a bit haphazardly and some were on dessert whilst others had not had their first course plate taken away!

I stumbled on this cruise and thank goodness I did! It was exceptional whilst completely understated. The staff are the happiest 'family' and made everyone feel part of the same. The ship went into dry dock the day we got off for a refurb and brush up but hopefully it will keep the same ambience with its new appearance. The on and off board activities were much better than we found in any of the hotels we have stayed at in Fiji and of course the benefit is you travel from island to island and get a real idea of Fijian life. I just wish we had done the 7 not just the 3 night cruise - next time!

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji - All You MUST Know Before You Go (2024)

Why Fiji's new expedition ship is a game changer

By Brook Sabin for Stuff | 3 months ago

Fiji has its very first luxury expedition cruise ship.

Why is that a breakthrough? Well, most of us can barely name three or four Fijian islands without getting stuck.

But the country actually has around 333 in total, and Captain Cook Cruises will help you explore them.

captain cook fiji cruise reviews

The MS Caledonian Sky is purpose-built for luxury expedition cruising. It was built in 1991, and most recently sailed in the Kimberley, Western Australia. Now based in Fiji, it replaces Captain Cook's old vessel Reef Endeavour, which was loved by passengers - but showing serious signs of age.

This new ship is full of rich wood panelling and pops of brass - a little like a luxury country hotel - and brings the golden age of ship travel into the 21st century.

The ship is just 90 metres long, with room for 114 guests across 57 suites. There are also around 70 crew - giving it one of the most generous passenger-to-crew ratios of any cruise line in the world.

captain cook fiji cruise reviews

The ship is all suites - meaning even the most economical rooms are very spacious.

As you'd expect with a luxury ship, all rooms have ensuites, heated towel rails, walk-in wardrobes, air conditioning (crucial in the tropics), dressing gowns, and slippers.

And no matter what room category you get, each has a view - be it from a balcony, window or large porthole.

The meals onboard are easily some of the best you'll get in Fiji. Breakfast is served al fresco on the stern deck, with a wide selection of hot and cold options. Lunch is buffet style and changes daily.

Dinner, meanwhile, is held in the elegant restaurant down on level two, with a relaxed fine dining approach to meals. Expect things like fresh kokoda (pronounced ko-kon-da, a raw Fijian fish salad), pan-seared mahi mahi, New Zealand lamb, and an ever-changing selection of desserts. The culinary offering is impressive.

The e ntertainment

If you're not exploring exotic islands, there's always something to do onboard. It starts in the morning with ocean swims, then continues with lectures and games. In the evening, there is a daily recap of the day's activities (including photos), an overview of the next day and nightly performances - ranging from kava ceremonies to traditional dance shows.

Everything is voluntary - so if you'd rather sit out under the stars with a drink, you don't need to attend anything (aside from safety briefings).

The voyages

Captain Cook Cruises has significantly expanded its expeditions with the new ship, offering more trips to places like the remote Lau group of islands, which is home to some of the most untouched islands in the Pacific. It's also planning trips to Tonga and Samoa to coincide with the whale watching season.
