For this cruise we flew into Singapore, stayed 4 days. Flew to Bali and stayed 4 more days- then boarded ship. This helped us adjust to time change and long flight from SFO. Really enjoyed the cruise and got a taste of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

A Complete Celebrity Millennium Review: Everything You Need to Know and What to Expect

By: Author Caroline Ikeji

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Sailing on the Celebrity Millennium and wondering what to expect? Read this Celebrity Millennium review to find out everything you need to know!

I was fortunate enough to be invited to sail aboard the Celebrity Millennium on an epic cruise to Alaska , and it was seriously one of the best trips of my life. I’ve not shut up about how amazing the sailing was – from the service, the breathtaking design, the food – so much that I decided I needed to sit down and write a Celebrity Millennium review to sum up my experience.

As the first ship in Celebrity Cruises’s fleet to be completely Revolutionized, the Millennium features a sleek, modern design, with tons of new luxurious upgrades. Everything from the staterooms, restaurants, lounges, and common areas had such a chic and sophisticated look that was reminiscent of a high-end boutique hotel.

The service was top-notch, and every single crew member encountered had such a big smile on their faces and seemed genuinely happy to see us. We really loved getting to know all of these wonderful people on board who made our sailing an amazing experience to remember. Not only that, Celebrity threw in some little touches of hospitality to make our cruise memorable – like little pastries and chocolates left on our bed every night after turndown service, along with the daily schedule.

Not only that, I was absolutely blown away by the food and beverage program on board – as a foodie, this was something that I really looked forward to and it did not disappoint! From the main dining rooms, the specialty restaurant, and the cocktail bars, everything I consumed on board was such a treat.

I’d never really considered myself a cruise person, but I loved so many things about my experience sailing on the Celebrity Millennium and it definitely changed my perception on cruises. I absolutely enjoyed my time, from the time the ship set sail from Seattle , through our time in Alaska, and was truly sad to see it end. It was such an incredible experience, and I do not hesitate in recommending the Celebrity Millennium to anyone!

If you are planning to sail on the ship and wondering what the experience is really like, keep on reading this Celebrity Millennium review to find out what to expect and for tons of photos!

**Note: Thank you to Celebrity Cruises for hosting my cruise. As always, opinions are all my own

About the Celebrity Millennium

The Celebrity Millennium is the flagship of the cruise line’s Millennium Class and has sailed as part of its fleet since 2000. In 2019, the Millennium was the first ship to undergo a complete renovation as part of the Celebrity Revolution, a $500 million program to upgrade and modernize its fleet.

As part of the Revolution, the Millennium got a complete makeover, and now features stylish  new upgrades, including brand-new staterooms, sophisticated restaurants and lounges, a luxurious Retreat lounge and sundeck, and a redesigned spa area. The ship also takes cues from the innovative Celebrity Edge, and is designed by world-renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen, giving it a  sleek, modern look that is reminiscent of a high-end boutique hotel or resort.

Why sail on the Celebrity Millennium?

Prior to sailing on the Celebrity Millennium, I’d never really considered myself a cruise person. After my voyage, I have been wholeheartedly recommending Celebrity Cruises and the Celebrity Millennium to others for the following reasons:

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

  • Sophisticated, modern design: The newly revolutionized Celebrity Millennium boasts a chic and stylish design that you would expect from a high-end boutique hotel. Gone are the old, dated furnishings that seems to be the stereotype of what one would find on a cruise ship – it definitely has a younger feel, and was totally up my alley!
  •   Emphasis on culinary experiences: As a foodie, this is one thing that I loved most about sailing on the Celebrity Millennium! The food and beverage program is headed up by a Michelin-starred chef, and has so many amazing offerings, from the main dining options, to the specialty restaurants. I really enjoyed everything that I had to eat and drink on board!
  • Unparalleled service : Any other person who has sailed on Celebrity and any other Celebrity Millennium review will rave about the attentive, friendly service. Every single staff member we encountered had a a big smile on their face, seemed genuinely happy to see us, knew us on a first-name basis, and continually went above and beyond.
  • Sustainability practices : Including implementing practices and equipment for better fuel efficiency, use of energy-efficient appliances, use of paper straws and aluminum bottles on board, and advanced wastewater purification. One of the naturalists on board said he specifically chose to work with Celebrity for their sustainability practices.
  • Emphasis on gender equality and support of inclusivity : Captain Kate McCue (who commands the Celebrity Edge) is the first woman to captain a mega cruise ship.

For reference, I am a female in my mid-30s and I felt that Celebrity fit my needs of what I wanted out of a cruise, and best reflected my personal values.

Staterooms on the Celebrity Millennium

LOOK & FEEL : We stayed in a standard Veranda stateroom and loved it so much! Each of the staterooms on the Millennium all got a grand makeover when the ship was revolutionized, and now have a sleek, modern design reminiscent of what you would find in a high-end boutique hotel.

Gone are the dated furnishings and tired design – the staterooms now all feature a chic color palette and updated fixtures with plenty of storage space for all your belongings (lots of shelves, closet space, even space under the bed).

At 140 square feet, the rooms are cozy but they are much more spacious than what you would expect on a cruise ship (seriously, on my last cruise the rooms were so tiny that I felt claustrophobic the entire time and this was a completely different experience). We had a Veranda stateroom, but even the inside and ocean view staterooms have the same design and amount of space.

I got so many DMs on Instagram after I did a room tour from people saying that they could not believe that this was a stateroom on a cruise ship, since it was completely different than what they expected!

THE BED: The beds, outfitted with new X-hale bedding, were so comfortable! We had a double room, so it came with two twin beds – definitely small but ended up not minding at all. I was not expecting much from them, but ended up being so comfortable that I did not want to get up in the morning.

THE BATHROOM: Each of the stateroom bathrooms were upgraded with the renovation, and I have to say – I was impressed! Like the rest of the room, the bathrooms also have a sleek, updated look. They are outfitted with modern fixtures, a glass-enclosed shower, and lots of lighting, which really give it that high-end hotel bathroom feel.

The bathroom also comes with refillable full-size toiletries instead of travel-sized bottles, part of Celebrity’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and reduction of single-use plastics.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

THE VERANDA: On the Celebrity Millennium, around 50% of the staterooms have balconies. Is a veranda stateroom worth it? 1000000% yes, especially if you are going on an Alaska cruise!

We sailed by so many fascinating natural wonders, whether it be towering glaciers, majestic snow-capped peaks, or floating icebergs. We were also able to see tons of wildlife, from whales to dolphins to porpoises.

It was such a magical experience to be able to see all of this right from our stateroom – usually enjoying a room service breakfast, a cup of coffee, or a glass of wine!

Having a balcony and being able to get fresh air whenever I wanted was welcome. This prevented me from becoming claustrophobic, which was what I experienced during my first cruise when I had an inside stateroom (after that, I vowed that I would never book an inside stateroom again if I ever went on another cruise).

If you are prone to seasickness, having a balcony stateroom can also help  especially if you are expected to sail through choppy waters (as was common while sailing to Alaska).

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

SERVICE : One thing that set Celebrity apart was the little touches of hospitality that elevated our experience – one example is the little treats that were left on our bed after turndown service, along with the daily announcements and schedule. It was little things like this that made us smile and made our cruise experience memorable!

Anyone who has sailed with Celebrity will tell you that one of the best parts is interacting with the wonderful crew. This was the case for us too – we loved every single crew member we had the pleasure of coming across, who always had a big smile on their face and seemed so happy to be there!

Make friends with your stateroom attendant – not only do these wonderful people work extra hard, they truly go the extra mile to make your experience memorable. We loved our stateroom attendant and seeing him every day always made us smile!

Dining on the Celebrity Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Sampling all (or most) of the dining options aboard the Celebrity Millennium was one of my favorite things about our cruise! I love the fact that Celebrity Cruises places an emphasis on elevated culinary experiences on their ships.

The food and beverage program is headed up by Cornelius Gallagher, a Michelin-starred chef. In addition, Celebrity has teamed up with Daniel Boulud, himself a Michelin-starred chef, who serves as the cruise line’s Global Culinary Brand Ambassador.

Here are some things to know about dining on the Celebrity Millennium:

  • Dining windows are rather short (especially for lunch), so plan accordingly – if you miss this window, your dining choices become rather limited.
  • There is a “Celebrity Select” program available for the main dining room which allows you to select a designated time (early or late) you wish to have your dinner every night. There are also a limited number of anytime spots available. We were also able to walk in, but you may have to wait for a bit.
  • Le Petit Chef and Tuscan Grille require a reservation in advance – these fill up pretty early on on the cruise, so book early!
  • Most of the nights are designated “smart casual” but there will be one or two nights (depending on the duration of your cruise) that are “evening chic.” Pack a few dressy outfits to wear on those nights.

Complimentary Dining

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Metropolitan Dining Room

The Metropolitan is the main dining room on the Celebrity Millennium, and got a complete makeover when the ship was Revolutionized – and let me tell you, it is absolutely stunning! It’s got the sophisticated look of a high-end restaurant (complete with white tablecloths), without making it stuffy or pretentious.

I loved the soft color palette, but what I loved most was the chandeliers that hang above the staircase – they are modern yet elegant (and took tons of photos there because it was so beautiful). A perfect touch that aligns with the look of the rest of the ship!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

We ended up dining at the Metropolitan for all three meals. Breakfast service includes all the same items that are on the room service menu and at the buffet. Lunch and dinner have a rotating selection of items that change daily, as well as a selection of classic standards that stay on the menu every day.

The menu also features items that represent a variety of cuisines so that you don’t get bored eating the same kind of food every day – I had a teriyaki duck dish one day, and pasta another, and both were delicious! I also had a French Onion Soup that I loved, and a olive oil and orange custard dessert (that I can’t remember the name of) that came highly recommended and was absolutely delicious!

The servers here are super friendly and we had fun getting to know them over the course of a week – they knew us by name and even came over to say hi to us even though we weren’t in their section (this is the kind of service that Celebrity is known for).

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Oceanview Cafe

The Oceanview Cafe is the buffet-style restaurant on the Celebrity Millennium, and is an ideal choice for grabbing a quick breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is intended to have the feel of an international marketplace, offering guests a variety of dishes with influences from around the world.

They have a wide variety of stations, including several made-to-order stations (they do made-to-order omelettes during breakfast, and pasta during lunch/dinner). In addition, they have a salad bar, a pizza station (which stays open until 1 a.m. in case you’re looking for a late night snack), a dessert and gelato bar, and more.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

I was very impressed with the quality, variety, and especially the presentation of the items at the Oceanview Cafe. They had items that represented a variety of cuisines so you wouldn’t get tired of the items, and they were all top-notch – I especially loved the Indian entrees that were available at lunch!

The presentation was absolutely gorgeous and made all of the offerings look enticing – I especially loved seeing the setup of the bread station, and the dessert bar! I couldn’t help but take several desserts at once because everything looked so pretty – probably more than I needed, but hey, everything was so delicious!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

One thing to note is that in light of the current health situation, a staff member serves you items instead of grabbing them yourself. I was unsure of buffet-style dining prior to the cruise, but felt much more at ease when I discovered that this was the case.

There is ample seating so that you can easily stop in for a quick meal without any wait – we literally had 15 minutes for a quick breakfast before heading out to our excursions and we still had time to grub. There are beautiful views of the water from here (hence the name) – one day, we were even able to see some dolphins and porpoises out the window while enjoying our meal! You also have the option of taking your meal outside to sit at the Sunset Bar.

Pool/Mast Grill

Located near the pool area, the Pool Grill and Mast Grill are ideal for grabbing a quick meal or snack poolside. It is also the only option available in between lunch and dinner. They offer hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries.

We stopped by to grab something to eat after we came back on the ship after our port stop in Ketchikan because we didn’t have time to grab something to eat while in town. We were honestly not expecting much but we were pleasantly surprised – the burgers and hot dogs were delicious! Highly recommend for a quick midafternoon bite to eat.

Did you know that Celebrity Cruises was one of the first cruise lines to offer a spa restaurant? The Spa Cafe is located in the Solarium, right next to the spa, and offers items such as smoothies and acai bowls. While I did not eat at the Spa Cafe, it would be a great spot to grab a quick, healthy, and nourishing breakfast.

Specialty Restaurants

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Blu (for AquaClass)

Blu is the exclusive restaurant that is included for AquaClass guests, which focuses on clean, spa-inspired cuisine. It focuses on serving a modern and inventive take on popular dishes, without pretense or fussiness.

The best part about Blu is the dining room itself – it is stunning! There are big open windows here that add a blue glow to the room (to fit its name), as well as beautiful mosaic chandeliers that hang from above. A blue carpet and blue water glasses accent the room to fit the blue theme as well.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

We were able to enjoy two meals at Blu and enjoyed both of them! The first was for dinner, and I ordered a blue cheese souffle appetizer that was one of the absolute favorite things that I ate on the entire cruise! I also had an orecchiette pasta that was solid as well.

Our second meal was a special lunch at Blu, and I ordered a grilled branzino fish, which was cooked to perfection. My friend ordered a surf and turf that she said was her favorite meal from the entire cruise!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Luminae (for SuiteClass)

While we did not dine in the Luminae dining room, we had the opportunity to try their menu one night and it was my favorite meal that I had on the entire cruise! Luminae is the exclusive restaurant for SuiteClass guests, and it’s definitely one good reason to splurge on a suite.

One thing that sets apart Luminae from the other restaurants on board is that it serves a signature menu created by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, the cruise line’s Global Culinary Brand Ambassador. This was something that I was excited about, and is what I ordered.

The first course was a chilled carrot and ginger veloute (kind of like a carrot gazpacho), a popular item at Boulud’s restaurants. They bring out a bowl with small cut pieces of vegetables and shrimp. They pour the soup right over it to finish the dish – such a cool presentation!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

The main course was a chicken tagine, which is one of my favorite dishes and Luminae’s version did not disappoint! The chicken was so tender and falling off the bones, and seasoned so perfectly. The saffron cous cous that came with it was the perfect accompaniment.

Dessert was a raspberry pistachio vacherin, which is sort of like a meringue tart. It was super light and refreshing, the perfect way to end a meal!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Sushi on Five

Sushi on Five takes a creative, modern take on Japanese cuisine, serving everything from rolls, nigiri, sashimi, noodle dishes, and more. They also have a wide selection of Japanese sake, Japanese craft beers, and Asian-inspired cocktails.

We ordered the lobster ramen, some rolls, and a chef’s choice sashimi. Everything was super fresh (the fish was fresh-caught from Alaska) and delicious!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

The best part about Sushi on Five was the desserts – they were so intriguing that we had to order two of them! We ordered the Matchamisu (a green tea tiramisu) and a caramelized ginger cake with wasabi gelato (yes, wasabi!) – both super creative and the perfect way to end the meal. They really satisfied my sweet tooth!

There are no reservations required and the prices were very reasonable as well.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Le Petit Chef

Le Petit Chef is not just a meal, it is a complete experience! It is a creative take on dinner and a show, using augmented reality and 3D mapping technology to create an animated show directly onto your tabletop.

It is not only an amazing meal, it is such a unique experience! The premise is a cooking competition, in which four different chefs, all from different countries (France, Italy, Spain, Japan) compete for the title of Le Petit Chef.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

You’ll get to see each of the chefs create their dishes before each course comes out – it was super cute and fun to watch! Each course was delicious as well. It’s such a unique way to experience a meal, fusing theater with dining, and literally bringing the table to life.

I highly recommend making a reservation for Le Petit Chef, as it is an experience unlike any other!

Tuscan Grille

The Tuscan Grille serves a contemporary yet rustic take on Italian cuisine, with homemade pastas, artisanal salumi, butcher cut meats, USDA Prime dry aged steaks, and more. They also have a regional wine menu, along with Italian-inspired cocktails. While we did not eat at the Tuscan Grille, the people in our group who did really enjoyed it!

On our cruise, the Tuscan Grille also offered a special Daniel Boulud tasting menu event on the last night. If you are interested in this, make your reservations early! My friend Melissa wanted to do this but when she called to make a reservation on the first day of the cruise, they were already booked up.

Cafe al Bacio

If you’re looking for a little treat or a specialty cup of coffee, head to Cafe al Baccio. You’ll find Italian pastries, gelato, and espresso drinks here for a nominal charge.

Bars & Lounges

You won’t go thirsty on the Celebrity Millennium – you’ll find a wide variety of bars and lounges, each with their own vibe to suit anyone’s tastes.

Do note that a standard “Everything Included” package comes with a classic beverage package. I’d recommend upgrading to the premium package if you can. This will allow you to order a much larger variety of drinks and specialty cocktails, and includes the Martini Bar, which was one of the highlights of our cruise (more on that in a bit)!

Here is a rundown of all of the bars and lounges available on the Celebrity Millennium:

This may just have been my favorite spot on the ship! Oh, Sunset Bar, I love thee, let me count the ways –

  • That gorgeous wooden paneling designed by Nate Berkus
  • Like it name suggests, it really is an ideal place to watch the sunset
  • Much more chill and relaxed vibe than some of the other bars on the ship (it also never felt crowded)
  • Its location on the back of the ship meant that there wasn’t really any wind – it was a nice place to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the views without freezing
  • The Sangria Spritz – I have no idea how many of these I consumed throughout the duration of the cruise, but it was my favorite! Think an Aperol Spritz crossed with a Sangria – so good and refreshing!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

I loved hanging out at the Sunset Bar so much that I ended up coming here multiple times a day every day on our cruise. It’s also attached to the Ocean View buffet, so it was an ideal place to sit and enjoy the view while eating lunch or breakfast (often with a mimosa or Sangria Spritz in hand)!

Martini Bar

My friend Jen sailed on the Celebrity Edge a few weeks before I set sail on the Millennium, and after watching her Instagram stories, I knew I would be spending a lot of time at the Martini Bar because it looked so cool and SO MUCH FUN!

While the Martini Bar on the Celebrity Millennium is much smaller than on the Edge, you’ll still be in for a really good time and some really amazing drinks here – it is usually the liveliest spot on the ship!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

You absolutely MUST order a flight here – the bartenders put on a spectacular show for you as they make and pour the drinks. Our group of eight people ordered three flights and it was such a spectacle to watch our bartender pour all 18 drinks – ALL AT ONCE! I don’t know how they do it, but it was super awesome to watch!

Aside from the flights, they also serve a selection of other really well-made martinis in an array of different flavors and varieties. We were obsessed with the espresso martini here, as well as the Black Forest martini, which was almost like a dessert!

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Like the Pool Grill, the Pool Bar is located poolside and is where you’ll want to go if you’re wanting a fruity, frozen cocktail. Ok, so an Alaska cruise didn’t exactly scream “pool weather” but we did end up here for some pina coladas and daiquiris and it totally hit the spot!

Cellar Masters

Cellar Masters features an extensive wine list of over 400 varieties from around the world, hand-picked by Celebrity’s sommeliers. If you love wine, you must head over to Cellar Masters – you’ll find something to suit your tastes and preferences here!

Cellar Masters also has an elegant, refined look with deep red and green accents, along with plush velvet furniture. You’ll also find a selection of tasting events that are hosted here as part of the daily program, such as a Macallan whiskey tasting.

Rendezvous Lounge

Rendezvous Lounge has a much more relaxed atmosphere than the other bars and lounges on the Celebrity Millennium. It is an awesome place to stop by in the evenings for a cocktail, and to listen to some live jazz music.

If you are looking to escape the crowds, stop by the Rendezvous Lounge after the live music sets have ended for the day – you’ll find barely anyone there and the service is super quick! However, the atmosphere is much more different and it is not the same.

During the day, the Rendezvous Lounge is also a great place to go if you need a quiet place to get some work done, read a book, or chill.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Sky Lounge sits on deck 11 of the ship, and comes outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to take in those beautiful ocean views, at any time in the day.

It has a completely vibe depending on when you visit – by day, it is where you can take part in fun, family-friendly activities such as board games, trivia, game shows, etc. It’s also the perfect spot to relax as you gaze at the sea.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

By night, it comes alive with live music, DJs, dance parties, and karaoke. The Celebrity Millennium is not much of a party ship (I’m too old for that), but if you’re looking to dance the night away, the Sky Lounge is your spot. The party goes on late into the night!

I had fun participating in all the events that took place in the Sky Lounge, whether it was a round of trivia or an ABBA singalong and dance party. The crowd here was varied and we met tons of awesome people of all ages!

The drink menu here features a selection of cocktails that are inspired by zodiac signs, and it was fun to see if the drink for your sign matches your personality – mine did not, but I had fun sampling all the drinks for the other signs!

Pools + Whirlpools on the Celebrity Millennium

There are two pool areas on the Celebrity Millennium – the main outdoor pool area on deck 10, as well as the indoor Solarium next to the spa.

The main outdoor area has two pools, as well as a few hot tubs, and looks like something you’d find from a nice hotel or resort. Given that we were on an Alaska cruise and it wasn’t quite pool weather, I didn’t swim in the pool) and only saw like two people in it during the week). It was so inviting though that I tried – I dipped my toes in and immediately retreated because it was COLD!

Because of this, most of the people who wanted to swim ended up in the whirlpools or the Solarium. If you plan to use either, go early! Otherwise, you may have to wait a bit to wait for a hot tub to open up. We went for a soak in the hot tub one morning, and it was the perfect way to start the day! We had to go early in order to get first dibs, because it does tend to fill up the rest of the day.

We did not get to use the Solarium because it was filled with people at any given time during the day – we even tried to get there early one morning and there were already a bunch of people who beat us.

While it wasn’t quite pool weather, I appreciated that the pool area had a ton of chairs available – these were perfect for relaxing and taking in the view, enjoying a book, and taking in the sea breeze!

If you’re looking for some pampering, head on over to The Spa, a luxurious sanctuary where you can find bliss and reinvigorate your mind and body. You’ll find a wide array of spa and beauty services at The Spa, including massages, facials, skin treatments, salon services, manicures, and more.

I had a facial at The Spa, and loved my experience! The treatment rooms have a beautiful view of the sea and play soothing music, which allows for immediate relaxation. My facialist was thorough, and even used some cool ultrasonic technology to really purify my skin! She was also helpful in recommending products that I should be using, something that I’ve always been clueless about. My skin literally was glowing afterwards, and has never looked better!

The Spa also has a Persian Garden, which includes several  rooms that create the use of aquatherapy environments, such as steam rooms, soaking tubs, and rain showers. A pass is available for purchase to have access to all of these rooms. I unfortunately ended up not having time to use the Persian Garden, but got a tour of it and wished I did – a few that were in a group did, and said it was so relaxing and rejuvenating!

Also attached to the spa area is the fitness center, which features a collection of high-end workout equipment and machines, including Peloton bikes.

The Retreat

Included for SuiteClass guests, the Retreat features an exclusive lounge and a private sundeck. We got to check out the Retreat, and really enjoyed our experience!

The Retreat lounge sits on deck 4, and has a quiet space with complimentary small bites, a separate bar area, and a dedicated concierge. There was hardly anyone else in the lounge while we were there (just one other group), and it was an awesome place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the rest of the ship.

The provided snacks were delicious and beautifully presented, and the service was so friendly and attentive – we enjoyed chatting with the staff here.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

The Retreat sundeck is on the top deck of the ship, and is a chic, open-air hideaway with plenty of comfortable lounge chairs, as well as a private hot tub. While the main hot tub was usually full, the one at the sundeck was available even midday.

Another thing that I liked about the sundeck was that it had tall panels that blocked the wind, making it an ideal place to sit and soak in the sunshine.

You can also order light meals and drinks from the exclusive menu offered at the Retreat sundeck.

Activities + Entertainment on the Celebrity Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

There are so many activities and entertainment options offered on the Celebrity Millennium that you won’t have time to be bored. Each day’s calendar is filled with so many events, lectures, activities, and shows that will suit anyone’s tastes and preferences!

One thing that I found handy is that you can build your own “schedule” within the Celebrity app – you can review the daily events, and add the ones that interest you to your own personal schedule so that you don’t forget about them!

Daytime activities on board included lectures, games, trivia, puzzle games (i.e. sudoku), dance classes, and more. There were also a few matinee shows, as well as live music sets in some of the ship’s lounges and in the pool area.

One thing that I really enjoyed and felt enriched our time on shore were the lectures offered on board. For our Alaska cruise, they were by a naturalist, who talked about the area’s wildlife, and a historian, who spoke about the history and culture of each port stop. We learned so much and it really enhanced our time in Alaska! If your cruise offers these lectures, absolutely do not miss them.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

The evening entertainment program included a variety of musical and shows. On our sailing, I attended a musical of Broadway songs, a Boogie Wonderland musical (with disco music), a live band performance by Savannah Jack, and a comedy show which was essentially a roast of the captain by the cruise director. There was also an acrobat show that I wanted to see, but unfortunately missed.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed all of the performances – I was afraid that the entertainment would be cheesy (as is the stereotype for cruise ship shows), but I really enjoyed every single one that I saw! I was also impressed by the talent and abilities by all the performers on board.

I am not much of a gambler so I did not play in the Casino, but if you are looking to try lady luck, there are a variety of state-of-the-art slot machines and table games here. The Casino was one of the venues that was updated when the ship was revolutionized, so it features a sleek new design as well as an eye-catching bar.

Shopaholic? The Celebrity Millennium has a retail corridor on deck 5, with a wide array of shops and boutiques. You’ll find everything from designer clothing, fine jewelry, beauty products, high-end watches, and even Apple products.

On our Alaska cruise, they also had a sale of Alaska-themed items, such as hats and shirts, that made perfect souvenirs at a low price. I had no idea about this until a few others in our group told me that they found some awesome souvenirs to take home and was sad that I’d missed it. Check to see if your sailing offers something like this, and do not miss out!

Celebrity Millennium Review And Ship Tour

by Prof. Cruise · Published September 5, 2019 · Updated September 13, 2019

Celebrity Millennium

Tour The Refurbished Celebrity Millennium

According to Celebrity’s marketing department, in February 2019 the Millennium was “revolutionized” as part of a massive $500 million fleet-wide program . I, however, will refrain from using the term “revolution” in favor of “refurbishment” so as not to end up with a Tracy Chapman song stuck in my head for the next three days. “Don’t you know, they’re talkin’ about a revolution.” Crap, too late.

In any case, the Millennium re-emerged with redesigned cabins and 30 entirely new cabins (one of which I stayed in – go here for a complete review and tour of both a refurbished and new cabin), and fully re-imagined public spaces.

Here’s my admittedly low-quality, but thorough and hopefully better-than-nothing cell phone tour of the refurbished Millennium to get you oriented:

Embarkation: Feel Like A VIP As You Board The Celebrity Millennium

Upon being greeted warmly with a complimentary glass of champagne or sparkling wine (I’m not sophisticated enough to understand the difference) as I stepped over the threshold to board the Millennium for my first ever Celebrity cruise and my first b2b, I figured someone had alerted the crew as to my status as a Professor of Cruising and warned of the public review likely forthcoming.

I politely accepted and proceeded to walk back out and re-board three additional times, but felt it my ethical obligation to inform them that my cruising students (N=3) count on me for unbiased information and that I simply can’t be bought. Besides, if they really wanted to grease my pen, a private meeting with the captain and premium chocolates delivered to my stateroom would go a lot further.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

But it turns out that every adult receives a complimentary glass of this delightfully carbonated and alcoholic mystery beverage (kids and those who don’t drink are offered orange juice), even inconsequential cruise bloggers booked in the cheapest cabin category who will disembark after 14 days with an account balance of less than $100.

But Then Later Wonder If You Boarded A Spring Break Fun Ship By Mistake

In addition to the free booze, there was another embarkation procedure unique to Celebrity that didn’t leave me feeling pleasantly relaxed and euphoric. Instead of receiving my ship card at the check-in desk and proceeding to ding it in upon embarkation to officially signal the start of my cruise, I boarded with a paper boarding pass and later picked up my ship card from my cabin door. While I’d certainly take the sparkling wine (we’ll call it sparkling wine from now one, because that’s easier to spell) over the ding, the paper boarding pass didn’t seem very official and left me feeling a bit uneasy.

And when I woke early the next morning to take in the views from deck 11 and was greeted with these (that’s an abandoned ice cream cone, a stray slice of pizza, and a wine glass stashed in shrubbery) plus a public restroom with no toilet paper and overflowing trash cans, I thought maybe I’d boarded a spring break fun ship by mistake.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Thankfully, that was an anomaly (perhaps they were short-staffed the night before) and deck 11 was so clean and well attended to from that point forward that one day my “running” hat, stashed under the leg of a lounger (because it kept blowing off my head due to wind) while I barely managed a slow and labored jog around the track, was immediately snatched up by a crew member thinking it was garbage. In fairness, and as expressed in response to her copious apologies as I shouted from across the deck, “wait, that’s my hat!,” it’s covered in sweat stains and has a giant, conspicuous hole in the front panel and a shredded bill.

Now, in an attempt to salvage this review (“it’s not garbage!”) let’s move on to food, as it was meant to be eaten, not off the floor of deck 11 (although I have to admit I did consider it – that was a perfectly good slice of pizza!), but soaked in water and shoveled into my mouth like I’m trying to both win a year’s supply of free ketchup and prove that petite older women can eat way more than you think!

Dining On The Celebrity Millennium

Celebrity Millennium dining

I should mention here that I’m a vegetarian, but also that I was joined on this sailing by Mr. Cruise and “H,” my 6 year-old teaching/travel assistant and son. So this section will include input from a true full-blooded, meat-eating American and a wee one with early onset cruise addiction.

While we didn’t eat at any specialty restaurants on this sailing, I’ll cover the buffet, main dining room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Spa Cafe, the Al Bacio coffee bar, the Pool Grill, and room service. You can also find all menus for the specialty restaurants (as well as the complimentary restaurants and bars) here .

The Oceanview Cafe (Buffet) On The Celebrity Millennium

Let’s start in the Oceanview Cafe, since that’s likely the first place you’ll eat upon embarkation, unless you end up in the medical unit with a broken arm after being shoved out of the way by an overeager Prof. Cruise (my sincere apologies and wishes for a speedy recovery).

I hate to burden you with another grainy video, but well, here:

Things I Loved About The Buffet On The Millennium

  • Overall quality and selection. Overall, I found the flavor and quality of most items on the buffet superior to many other lines I’ve sailed. There were a wide variety of items to choose from and, even after 14 days of eating most breakfasts and lunches, and 6 dinners there, I hadn’t tired of the food. See me in the maternity jeans I had to bust out of storage upon my return to Seattle as proof.
  • Good for special diets. As a vegetarian who can’t drink cow’s milk, I really appreciated how friendly the Millennium buffet was to those with special diets. There were separate vegetarian and gluten free sections, non-dairy milk easily available to everyone on the breakfast buffet (without having to track someone down to request it), and all items were clearly labeled as to whether they were vegetarian, gluten free, lactose free, or sugar free. The labels were hugely helpful for me when it came to certain items like soups and sauces and set Celebrity apart from many other lines that still aren’t providing similar labeling. I also appreciated vegetable broth and vegetarian sauce being available at the ramen and stir-fry stations.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

  • Made-To-Order Stations . There were made-to-order omelette and eggs benedict stations at breakfast, a pasta station at lunch and dinner, and one additional rotating station at lunch and dinner (ramen, stir fry, etc). They offered a wide variety of ingredients to customize one’s order and were served hot and fresh. The pasta station was my favorite and I recommend a blend of pesto sauce and alfredo – the pesto because it’s green and you can delude yourself into thinking your dinner is healthy and the alfredo because it’s decidedly indulgent and more appropriate for vacation.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

  • Pizza. The pizza was quite good for cruise ship pizza and there was always cheese, pepperoni, and two additional rotating options available. There was also delicious, crispy garlic bread (grab some to go with your pasta!) and a calzone available.

Celebrity Millennium dining pizza

  • International Entrees And Desserts. With the exception of the Indian food, which I’ll get to shortly, I really enjoyed the international offerings, especially the savory breakfast items and the desserts. After spending six weeks in China over two summers, I developed a love for rice and other vegetable dishes as breakfast fare and really enjoyed those on the Millennium. There was generally either vegetable fried rice or vegetable noodles, congee, and one or two additional rotating items with lots of Asian condiments to customize them.

Celebrity Millennium buffet

  • Whipped Cream And Butters At Breakfast. While I enjoy savory items for breakfast, I always pair them with a giant stack of something sweet: waffles, pancakes, or french toast. And on the Millennium I topped my carb tower with whipped orange butter, warm maple syrup, and fresh whipped cream. The whipped butters were a delicious touch I’ve never seen on other lines.

Celebrity Millennium buffet

  • Hard Ice Cream . Homemade hard ice cream and sorbets were a highlight of the Millennium. Rotating flavors (try the cinnamon!) were available in the buffet and were delicious and of high quality. There were also a number of toppings available.
  • Afternoon Tea . Tea Time took place every day from 4-5pm in the buffet and, along with a selection of teas, included delicious biscuits with fresh cream and strawberry jam along with donuts and other pastries and light snacks. I kept looking for the queen, but suppose she wouldn’t have approved of the mountain of cream on my biscuits and the way I manhandled the tea I’d clumsily poured into an insulated coffee tumbler and chugged with two hands.

Things I Didn’t Love About The Buffet On The Millennium (aka problems of privilege)

  • No Utensils On The Tables. On most other ships/lines I’ve sailed, there are containers on each table containing utensils wrapped in cloth napkins. The containers are constantly refilled by buffet staff and, without trays available, save a circus-like balancing act, an extra trip, or a frosting covered hand (I lack patience while in the company of dessert) when you realize you have four slices of cake, but no fork to eat them with. No biggie, but if given the choice, I’d prefer the utensils already be on the tables.
  • Drink Service. While bar servers would immediately descend upon guests – before their expanding rears even tested the sturdiness of the post refurbishment buffet chairs – to sell them a drink, I never saw anyone serving complimentary water, juice, coffee, and tea like I’ve experienced on comparable lines. It’s possible that, had I asked, they would have. But no one ever offered and I didn’t want to burden servers if that wasn’t their responsibility. Again, this isn’t a big deal like, at all, but between the utensils and drinks and with a child to help and manage, I probably burned at least 10 calories going back and forth before shoveling approximately 14,000 into my face.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Prof. Cruise Extra Credit Pro Tip If you don’t plan on ordering anything from the bar, turn the plastic drink menu sitting on the table onto its side. This indicates that you don’t need bar service and the servers won’t come around and ask you.
  • Mild Indian Selections. I grew up in a community with food so bland and boring, that if you showed up to church functions or funerals with anything other than a casserole layered with potatoes, canned soup, and mild cheddar, you’d have kids poking at it with disgust: “ew, what’s this?” So suffice it to say, I don’t have a high tolerance for spice. But somehow as an adult I love ethnic foods, which I typically order at a spice level 2 out of 10, with Indian being a favorite and one of the things I look forward to most when it comes to cruise dining. But I was disappointed in the buffet Indian food on the Millennium (except for the desserts which were excellent), finding it too bland, even for me.

Breakfast In The Main Dining Room On The Millennium

While I wasn’t that impressed with the breakfast selections in the main dining room (I find the breakfast menus on Holland America and NCL so much better) and found it impossible to ever get ketchup (I know, I know), it was nice to enjoy a more relaxed pace.

Prof. Cruise Extra Credit Pro Tip If you’re looking for an egg dish, I’d skip the frittata and go with the classic french omelette.

Dinner In The Metropolitan Main Dining Room On The Millennium

We had Celebrity select dining, meaning we didn’t have a set dinner time and could show up to eat at the Metropolitan Dining Room on deck 4 anytime between 5:30pm-9pm. We stopped by the podium on the first night and made a standing reservation for 5:30pm because Mr. Cruise and I are old, both chronologically and at heart and first assist each other in removing our orthopedic shoes before retiring by 9pm to dream of finally winning at bingo: “BINGO!” However, we publicly assign the blame for our early bedtime to our 6 year-old who has, truth be told, been out-partying us since the cord was cut after he popped out proclaiming: “finally, she’s so boring!”

You can also make a dinner reservation using the Celebrity App or you can just show up without a reservation and stand in line (there are separate lines for those with a reservation and those without).

Prof. Cruise Extra Credit Pro Tip: The meTROPOLITAN DINING ROOM GENERALLY OPENED 15-20 MINUTES prior to the printed time of 5:30pm. arrive by 5:15pm for prompt seating and to avoid crowds.

Things I Didn’t Love About Dinner In the MDR On The Millennium

We were seated at the same table by a window each evening with the same wait team: Chonwarich, Pavlo, and Andre. While they were professional and friendly and worked extremely hard, service was slow, with most dinners lasting two hours or more with a particularly long wait between the main course and dessert. Once we mentioned to Chonwarich that we were trying to make the early show each night, he tried very hard to speed things up as much as possible. We appreciated this and expressed our understanding and patience when things took a bit longer. Still though, it was a long time for “H,” our 6 year-old to keep Mr. Cruise and I entertained.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Besides a clear shortage of wait and kitchen staff leading to the long waits, these high-backed dining chairs, while very chic looking, were a terrible design choice as they were extremely difficult and awkward to move and made serving to the person sitting in them almost impossible. Celebrity would be wise to ditch them in favor of something more practical. I can only imagine the colorful language probably used to describe these chairs down in staff quarters each night.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Things I Did Love About Dinner In the MDR On The Millennium

But now that we have a few negatives out of the way, there was so much I loved about dinner in the Metropolitan Dining Room (main dining room). Two things stood out that really set Celebrity apart from other lines for me. First, each night the bread basket (standard on all lines) was served with three delicious butters – one was always regular whipped butter and the other two were rotating flavors. Trying “tonight’s butters” always made for a fun start to the meal and is a good topic of conversation if you’ve been married too long (“Is that a new dress, honey?” “No, I’ve been wearing it regularly since 1995.”) or are seated at a table with strangers who are wearing plush cat ears and tails and sporting diamond studded collars for elegant night: “We’re furries!” “Okay….so, how about this garlic butter?”

Celebrity Millennium food pics

Second, I appreciated having a separate vegetarian menu available. While there were vegetarian items on the regular menu and I was fully prepared and happy to order from them, once Chonwarich discovered that I was a vegetarian, he provided me with a vegetarian menu each night. The unique thing about the vegetarian menu on Celebrity is that it’s available to anyone (just ask for it), is different every evening, and you do not have to place your order the night before, like on Holland America.

Celebrity vegetarian menu

This cemented my impression of Celebrity as being the most vegetarian friendly cruise line I’ve sailed.

Overall, Mr. Cruise, “H,” and I enjoyed the quality and flavor of the food at dinner in the MDR. While it wasn’t hugely better compared to other lines and should still be described as cruise food, I’d rate it slightly higher than any other line I’ve sailed (Carnival, NCL, Holland America, Princess, and Royal Caribbean). Mr. Cruise particularly enjoyed the soups and ordered at least three each night (jeez, no wonder dinner service took so long!), “H” recommends anything with cheese as the main ingredient, and I loved the chocolate lava cake so much, it actually replaced this as one of my favorite cruise desserts.

The Spa Cafe On The Millennium

While the Spa Cafe alone can’t replace the International Cafe on Princess as my favorite complimentary fast casual dining spot, combined with Cafe Al Bacio (up next) it would, despite the necessary long walk between deck 10 and deck 5 (I really am as lazy as I sound).

The Spa Cafe is located on deck 10 in the solarium and is open for breakfast (7am-10am) and lunch (noon-2pm). It offers freshly prepared juices and smoothies for an extra charge and complimentary healthy and delicious food options. Most items are served buffet style, but a few are ordered (oatmeal, acai bowl, soup, and vegetable wrap).

Cafe Al Bacio

Cafe Al Bacio, open from 6am-midnight, is a combined coffee bar and bakery with a large selection of espresso drinks, coffee cocktails, and teas for an extra charge and complimentary (even if you don’t order coffee) breakfast pastries and desserts (including several gluten free options) available to eat there or “to-go.” Everything we tried was delicious with the exception of the iced popcorn frappe which was disappointing. I especially liked the almond croissants, coconut macaroons, and German chocolate cake. One day while I was waiting to order, I was introduced to the head pastry chef and momentarily considered how I might kidnap her. But prison has notoriously bad food and a felony conviction would severely limit my ability to cruise, so I thought better of it.

Pool Grill On The Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Hidden in a corner near the main pool and easily missed, the Pool Grill is open from 11:30am-6pm and is a great place to grab a quick burger or hot dog with a variety of toppings. There is also a vegetarian burger available, but it takes about 10 minutes to cook.

Room Service On The Millennium

We’re all known for something . For me, it’s my equally disturbing and disgusting ability to sweat out all the water in my body (the average adult human body is 60% h2o) in a single one hour gym session and still survive to cuss out my rusting spin bike (“see you tomorrow *******”). And for Celebrity it’s her ability to remain resolute in the face of crushing pressure from her peers to smoke in a ditch behind the school while feasting on stolen cafeteria pizzas. Oh wait, that was also me. But Celebrity has managed to resist peer pressure too, from other lines determined to nickel and dime their way to increasing profits by, for one, charging for room service.

Room service, including hot breakfast items, remains complimentary on Celebrity. And while the selection is fairly limited, the items we tried were delivered hot and fresh and within the specified time frame and were delicious. Take my advice and pick a night to stay in, deadbolting your cabin-mate(s) outside. Wrap yourself in a soft complimentary robe, turn on a complimentary on-demand movie (for which there were 5 or 6 to choose from), and feast on a complimentary room service dinner in bed. Then send me some cruise credit to thank me for the idea.

Bars, Drinks, And Beverage Packages On The Celebrity Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

I lost count after visiting seven bars on the Millennium, with my favorites being the Crush Martini Bar with its ice-covered surfaces, the Al Bacio coffee bar, and the Rendezvous Lounge. And while we didn’t purchase a beverage package for this sailing, we did try a variety of different cocktails.

I loved all the martinis and would highly recommend the martini flight ($26) and also enjoyed the Elderflower Blush that can be ordered in the main dining room or the Rendezvous Lounge.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Mr. Cruise liked the Mexican Firing Squad and Caribbean Cobbler.

The only drink I didn’t like was the Pomegranate Mojito which was very watery.

Prof. Cruise’s Two Favorite Spots To Relax On The Millennium

And by “relax” I mean places I go to hide from my family to read in peace: “aww, quiet!”

The Solarium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

With comfortable padded loungers and couches, great views, and no children allowed in the pool and hot tubs outside of designated “family hours” from 4pm-7pm, this is the perfect place to sprint to after dropping your kids off at camp. Plus it’s covered and stays warm if you’re cruising to Alaska where it can get quite chilly on outside decks.

The Sky Observation Lounge AKA The Cosmos Lounge

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

While many activities take place here, it’s also a great spot to sit and enjoy beautiful views from the front and side of the ship. It’s located on deck 11 forward.

Prof. Cruise’s Three Least Favorite Spots On The Millennium

1. fitness center on the millennium.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

This well equipped gym was open 24 hours (a first for any ship I’ve ever sailed on) and offered no excuse for missing my dreaded daily workout.

Fitness Class Schedule On The Millennium

Celebrity fitness class schedule

2. The “Library” On The Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Not so much a library, but a few shelves with books on them disguised as part of the Rendezvous Lounge. As the daughter of two librarians, I prefer a large, quiet, well stocked library.

3. Outside deck 4

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

One of my favorite cruise activites is to walk laps on an outside deck while stalking wildlife and listening to an audio book. My favorite ships are the ones that have an outside shaded promenade deck that runs all the way around the ship and is fully open to guests. While deck 4 offered a great spot to sit and watch the scenery, much of it was closed off to guests making walking laps impossible. This was a huge negative of the Millennium for me.

Activities, Entertainment, And Enrichment On The Celebrity Millennium

On stage, at the theater.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Because we were onboard for a 14 day b2b, we were able to catch every show offered in the main theater (they repeated for the second week). Our favorites included:

  • IBroadway : A tribute to the best of Broadway performed by the Millennium Production singers and dancers.
  • Yulia and Alan Reva : A husband and wife cirque act that will leave you on the edge of your seat as well as wondering how full-sized organs can fit in a body that skinny.
  • American Ballet Theater : Ballet soloists Thomas Forster and Katie Williams along with violinist Katarina Rossa. Lovely.
  • A Hard Day’s Night, Beattles Tribute Band : We loved it, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Follow The Music

Music on Celebrity

There were many opportunities each evening to enjoy live music in a number of different venues. Our favorites were the house band, Jeam Beam (pictured above) and solo guitarist Kevin Wagner.

Beyond The Podium Presentations

Naturalist on Celebrity Millennium to Alaska

Naturalist Celia Garland and ship astronomer Dan Benedict presented regular enrichment programming on topics specific to Alaska and of general interest. I particularly enjoyed Celia’s sense of humor and learned a lot about Alaskan wildlife like that bald eagles can projectile poop as a defense mechanism if they feel threatened, annoyed, slighted, or betrayed. Can you imagine how covered in s**t every American politician would be if humans had that ability? I’ll never watch cable news again without imagining it.

Activities On The Millennium

There were numerous activities available on the Millennium appealing to a wide variety of different interests. Trivia, karaoke, spa treatments and presentations, dance classes, art auctions and talks, an archery challenge, casino competitions, sports, wine and liquor tastings, shopping, and board and card games.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

The one thing I really missed on Celebrity was a book club, available on both Holland America and Princess, #nerdsunite, and cooking workshops (I love America’s Test Kitchen on Holland).

Movies On The Millennium

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

In addition to a small selection of free on-demand movies, rotating live movies, and on-demand paid movies available in staterooms, there were also at least two movies shown each day on a giant outdoor screen at the Rooftop Terrace on Deck 12 aft. I loved that this area was seperate from the crowded pool decks and enjoyed the comfy seating. Popcorn would have been a nice touch (I never saw any offered) and more blankets should have been provided (there were a few floating around, but I’m not sure where people found them originally), but otherwise this was one of my favorite activities.

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

Camp At Sea And Club X On The Celebrity Millennium

Camp at Sea is easily, incontestably, hands down, without a doubt, unquestionably, (you get the picture, right?) my favorite place on the Millennium because it’s where I abandoned my kid for 3-6 hours per day in favor of “me time.” “Bye buddy, I’ll miss you” (not). Thankfully “H” also loved Camp at Sea, mostly because of the Xbox’s, but also for a variety of art, recreational, culinary, and S.T.E.M. activities. And lucky for us, each cruise sees a fresh schedule of activities geared to the interests of the specific group of kids, so the second leg of our b2b was an entirely new experience for “H.”

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

There were a number of family activities where parents could join their kids at camp. I elected to attend “Meet The Captain” because, as many of you know, my highest goal in life is to marry a cruise ship captain (for some reason Mr. Cruise doesn’t feel at all threatened by this). And while I kept my distance on this particular sailing out of respect for the Captain’s three young daughters who were onboard with him (what? I’m not a monster!), I still jumped at the chance to gaze upon his beautiful smile, learn of our shared love of cruise ship food, and fantasize about shacking up in his quarters for a lifetime of free cruises.

Celebrity kids activities

Club X is for teens 13-17 and, while many would argue that I act like a teenager (see above), we didn’t have anyone in our group of the appropriate age to step into Club X without being hauled down to the brig by security. So I took these photos through the closed door and grabbed a schedule from the first day to give you a sense of the kinds of activities offered.

The Celebrity Millennium: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

celebrity cruise millennium reviews

  • Free booze at embarkation
  • Vegetarian (and other special diet) friendly
  • Beautiful, refurbished cabins and public areas
  • Quality entertainment, enrichment, and activities
  • Complimentary room service
  • The Spa Cafe and Al Bacio
  • Camp at Sea
  • Smaller sized ship – easy to navigate and not too crowded
  • Nice, extra touches: higher quality bath products, cloth towels in public restrooms, robes and umbrellas provided in staterooms, towels on every lounger, life vests available for kids at the pools, homemade hard ice cream, flavored butters at dinner in the MDR
  • Slow dinner service in the MDR/understaffed areas at times
  • No public outside promenade deck that wraps all the way around the ship
  • No library or book club
  • 24 hour gym
  • Foyer was small and not very “grand”
  • My facial expression upon running into the Captain’s wife as she picked up her children at Camp at Sea and as I disembarked after 14 beautiful, fun, and delicious days at sea. It looked something akin to this on both occassions:

Final Thoughts On the Millennium

Since I can’t punctulate this review with the trite, yet catchy tagline, “the Millennium, a once in a thousand year experience,” since this was a b2b and, as such, I technically sailed on her twice over the course of just two weeks, I’ll instead close with these Christina Perri lyrics (from “A Thousand Years”) in honor of the Millennium and my new favorite cruise line, Celebrity (although don’t hoist me up into a wobbly liberty stunt just yet, Celebrity cheerleaders, because this seems to change with every cruise, suggesting that my favorite ship/line is always the one I’m on):

And all along I believed, I would find you Time has brought your heart to me, I have loved you for a thousand years I’ll love you for a thousand more

Hi - I'm considering this 12-day Japan itinerary (with a stop in Busan, South Korea as well) on Celebrity Millennium next August. https://www.celebritycruises.com/itinerary-details/12-night-best-of-japan-cruise-from-tokyo-yokohama-japan?packageID=ML12I092&sDT=2024-08-07&cCD=CO&search=startDate:2024-08-01~2024-08-31

Has anyone ever been to Japan on Millennium? If so, how was your experience? Are there a lot of onboard activities for the 4 full sea days (and a partial 5th) on this itinerary?

I realize August can be unpleasantly hot and humid in Japan but going in the spring or fall won't work for a number of reasons.

Thanks for your help!

I did a  Japan cruise April 2019 on the millennium. However ours was port intensive. Really wonderful experience and yes as always the usual activities on board.

I believe this has been my favorite cruise, I did not care for Busan. Jeju was amazing if you have that stop.

We did a Japan cruise on Millenium in late November 2019. Tokyo to Hong Kong.

We loved the ship although we spent little time on our sunset verandah due to the cool

Our port days were busy ones so we were happy to have some sea days in the mix. There was always something to do on board if you felt like it.

Most of our excursions were organised with people in our roll call.

It was a fabulous trip and we would love to return to Japan.

I’ve been waiting for the reviews as the first Japan cruise of the season has just finished. We are sailing on the one following yours, OP.

Have heard good things about the Millennium Japan cruises. Am booked in April 2024. Most of our tours are booked privately with Tourswithlocals &  https://gowithguide.com/japan/guides . Private tours can be more difficult to arrange as the guide cannot drive too so there is a reliance on separate taxis and the excellent public transport. Did find a helpful company in Busan too.

A lady has arranged a tranche of tours on our cruise and I have booked a few small groups. Otherwise seems most folk are using Celebrity or DIY with the public transport.

There are some good trip reports on cruises. Miaminices come to mind.

We board next Tuesday, the 24th, for our 12 night southern Japan cruise on the Millennium!  I'll try and post a report when I'm back.  This cruise will be very port intensive.  We have a few ship excursions (using OBC), and others through Tripadvisor and toursbylocals.  Only two sea days.  We are leaving Friday and spend a couple of days in Tokyo.  It will be our first trip to Japan.

Thanks

We did a trans-pacific to Japan on the Millie prior to the pandemic and it was a great cruise on a well-maintained ship. Great crew. Not likely to go back just because of flight time from Asia to US or US to Asia.

I’ve booked for September next year so am following too.

Good luck for August !   Our experience on Millennium in April just before COVID was

perfect. Probably our favourite cruise. Japan was delightful and we had the best

entertainment staff one could wish for. Thank you Marianna, Al and Kyle. We had an

Aqua cabin and enjoyed Blu restaurant for almost all our dinners. The atmosphere

on the ship was as good as one could wish for. There was some magical ingredient

which made it so memorable.

To anyone who has done this cruise…is the food quality/variety any different from a European cruise?

Looking forward to hearing more....we booked for April 2025 right when the itinerary came out and hopefully will be able to secure business class flights with points otherwise airfare cost is prohibitive.

I used points on United to book our flights in economy for our cruise in May.  Then I paid a small fee to upgrade us to Business Class (United Premium Plus). Other wise it would have been a very long and uncomfortable flight after the first four or five hours.

I'd take a look at Diamond Princess to compare itineraries. The ship is there year-round so they get more varied trips, often tied to Japanese festivals, like the Nebuta festival in Aomori at the tip of the mainland, which will be August 2-7 or so (I lived there for a few years, and the floats and parades were amazing). The further North you get in August, the less-hot it will be. The benefit of August is that there are festivals all over, and you'll be on a ship with a/c to come back to. The Celebrity solarium is also temperature-controlled, which is nice.

We recently got back from B2B (Transpacific and then Best of Japan) on the Millennium. The ship for the most part is well maintained and we enjoyed the size of the ship. Completely different experiences on each leg as you can imagine.

Regarding the OPs question about things to do on the 4 full sea days, I would say yes. The cruise director, Patrick and the activities team were very good. Of course there seemed to be less planned activities on the sea days for 2nd leg compared to TP, but there was still plenty to keep guests busy or to relax as per preferences. The service was excellent for the whole cruise, the food in BLU was outstanding and the Celebrity and guest entertainers were awesome.

I‘m hoping to write a review and post shortly since I realize it‘s been a long time since Celebrity was last in Japan, but in the meantime, I‘m happy to answer any specific questions.

Our last Celebrity European cruise was on B2B inaugural + an additional week sailing on Apex in 2021 (which was during the pandemic) so it‘s a bit unfair to compare. There were less than 500 people on the brand new ship and so everything was perfection.

Not that on the recent Japan sailing there was anything wrong, but I‘d say overall similar to what Celebrity regularly offers. They seemed to not be able to get berries, so that was an exception. No blueberries or strawberries at the spa breakfast yogurt station after about 6 days in Japan. There were lots of provisions brought on board while in Busan, which seemed to come from the US and Australia, so the quality seemed similar to previous Celebrity cruises we’ve taken. I don‘t eat meat, so can‘t comment on that.

Looking forward to your review. I have a couple of questions. Firstly, did you use any private guides for tours or did you take ship tours? How was immigration after you’d visited South Korea in your first Japanese port? Did you stay in Yokohama pre-cruise, if so where? I’m sure I’ll have lots more once I’ve read your review 🤭 . TIA.

Wasn't recent, but took a TP from "Tokyo" (Yokohama) to Vancouver in May of 2017.  Was in a CC.  Had sailed in a CC on an M Class before, the only thing new about the suite was the added balcony.  Ship was in great condition the crew we came in contact with were excellent.  The Captain was the best we ever had!!!  He was sailing with his wife and young daughter.  He was very personable and engaged with the passengers.

The weather turned out to be much colder than anyone anticipated and they had to break out their stores of parkas sold on Alaskan cruises, with Alaskan logos on the front of the parkas.  They heavily discounted the price to $25 each.

Smart move DaKahuna.  Are you flying out of SFO?  If so, UAL Business (Polaris) lounge is excellent.  They actually have two of them; one of them has a decent buffet, the other an actual sit down restaurant.  We lived and worked in Tokyo for 4-years.  We did a frequent amount of travel to and from the States.  From a jet lag perspective, it was always the east bound flights that kicked us in the butt.  They didn't have lay flat seats back then.  In 2017 we flew over on ANA Business out of Vancouver with lay flat seats.  What a world of difference it made!

 Thank you.

No we are flying direct from Dulles to Haneda.  Do not think our Premier Economy seats qualify for the Polaris Lounge.  I will check into that.  Otherwise we shall make do with my United Club membership.

Yes, especially since our hotel is in Yokohama near the cruise terminal.

Our plan is to take advantage of the Airport Limousine Bus service that runs from Haneda to a number of hotels in Yokohama, including ours.

If going on a Japan cruise, do you recommend staying in Yokohama beforehand or in Tokyo itself? I know the latter is more expensive but how easy is it to get from Yokohama to downtown Tokyo for sightseeing?

The HDTV is interfaced with a mini Mac computer that allows Internet access, booking excursions, making reservations, ordering services, checking onboard accounts, browsing food and bar menus; watching movies on-demand. The channeling includes sports-movie-music-news channels, also Celebrity Cruises ship info channel and live camera views. The TV size varies by cabin category, raging between 32 and 52 inches (in largest suites).

As to power outlets, each cabin has several US-standard plugs (North American 3-pronged / 3-pin sockets, 110 V) and one European-standard plug (2-pronged / 2-pin socket, 220 V). UK passengers have to use adapters. There are no bedside plugs, so bringing an extension cord is recommendable.

Celebrity Cruises Penthouse Suites are among the best-rated (and largest) cruise ship suite accommodations. Each of those has foyer, separate bedroom (king bed, 52-inch TV, vanity desk, walk-in closet, dressing room), bathroom (floor-ceiling windows /terrace view, marble floor, 26-inch TV, large double-sink vanity area, whirlpool bathtub, WC/bidet, large-size shower for 2 /dual shower heads), large living room (hardwood floor, motorized curtains with lights, throw rug, plush furniture, double sofa bed, coffee table, 4 stuffed chairs, media center, 52-inch TV with surround sound, baby grand piano), dining area (glass-topped 8-seat table, butler’s pantry, full wet bar), powder room (WC, shower), full guest bathroom, absolutely huge veranda (size 1100 ft2 / 102 m2, with patio furniture, 6-seat dining table, outdoor Jacuzzi tub, outdoor bar with 4 high stools).

Royal Suites have separate bedroom (queen bed, vanity desk, TV, large walk-in closet), master bathroom (whirlpool bathtub, separate shower stall, double-sink vanity), guest bathroom (WC/sink), large living room (L-shaped double sofa bed, coffee table, stuffed chair, media center, 52-inch TV with surround sound), separate dining area (glass-topped 6-seat table, full wet bar), large veranda (size 195 ft2 / 18 m2, with patio furniture and outdoor Jacuzzi tub).

Celebrity Suites have entrance hall, separate bedroom (2 twin beds /convertible to queen, vanity desk, 32-inch TV, walk-in closet, dual access bathroom (bathtub, shower), glass-enclosed living room (double sofa bed, 4-seat dining table, coffee table, vanity desk, 2 stuffed chairs, media center, 52-inch TV with surround sound), spacious veranda (85 ft2 / 8 m2). Note: Celebrity Suite cabins 6104 and 6106 are without balconies (floor-ceiling windows instead).

Sky Suites (mini-suites) are similar to oceanview staterooms – with 2 twin beds (convertible to queen), living area (double sofa bed, 40-inch TV, mini-fridge, coffee table, stuffed chair), bathroom (bathtub/shower), veranda (55 ft2 / 5 m2).

Aqua Class (“spa cabins”) represent a new class of accommodations located on decks 9 and 11. As for sizes, they are slightly larger than Deluxe Balcony staterooms (190 ft2 / 55 ft2 balcony). The difference is in the included complimentary amenities and Spa privileges. Guests in AquaClass cabins enjoy the following bonus amenities and services: exclusive dining at the Blu restaurant (located aft-portside on Entertainment Deck 5 /priority seating, complimentary continental breakfast and dinner), unlimited Spa access (Persian Garden, Relaxation Room), daily bottled water and fresh (flavored) iced tea, luxury bedding sets (Frette linens, towels, robes, slippers, pillow menu), premium bath products (spa cosmetics, gels), in-cabin dining (daily canapes, exclusive (healthy food) room service menu, wellness classes, personal Spa Concierge (treatments booking, products info, wellness library recommendations). AquaClass cabin bathrooms are equipped with a 5-head Hansgrohe shower tower.

Concierge Class cabins recive the following concierge services: priority check-in, welcome gifts (sparkling wine, fruits, flowers, Celebrity tote bag), hors-d'oeuvres in the evenings, pillow menu, dinner seating preferences, shoeshine. Bonus amenities are exclusive Concierge Lounge (part of the lobby area on deck 3, serves free coffee, juices, pastries), exclusive Main Dining Room luncheons (on embarkation day only), high-quality balcony furniture.

Suite Class cabins (excluding Junior Suites) enjoy complimentary dining (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) at the new Luminae restaurant located on Promenade Deck 4 (portside-aft).

The 24-hour room service menu includes cold and hot breakfast items (cereals, fruits, eggs, pancakes, also daily soups, salads, fast food (burgers, sandwiches, pizza, desserts, vegetable lasagna, steaks, quesadillas), also items from the main dining room’s dinner menu. The room service order is via the cabin phone or the interactive TV system.

IMPORTANT: Celebrity Cruises charges USD 3,95 for late-night room service orders (between 11 pm and 6 am). This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the Millennium ship). Passengers exempted from the new room service fee are the occupants of higher-grade cruise accommodations (Aqua-class, Concierge-class and all Suites).

IMPORTANT: The daily replenished bottled water perk for AquaClass cabins is no longer available. AquaClass guests, along with passengers in Sky Suite and Celebrity Suite accommodations, now receive (free of charge) two bottles of water (9 oz / 250 ml) only once – upon embarkation. Still, AquaClass passengers enjoy the beverage package perk, so they can take bottles of water for free at any of the ship bars. Know that Celebrity Cruises drink packages are not available on trans-oceanic (including Transatlantic) crossings.

Celebrity Cruises ship gratuities (automatic tipping per person per day) are as follows – standard cabins (Inside, Oceanview, Balcony) USD 13,50 (up from USD 12,95), AquaClass-ConciergeClass cabins (USD 14 / up from USD 13,45), Suites (USD 17 /up from USD 16,45). Daily gratuities are shared by the ship’s service staff (dining, housekeeping, cabin stewards, etc).

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
