While the excitement of the  summer travel season is upon us, it’s coming with one major caveat:  high price tags on airfare . With  scaled-back flight schedules , strategizing— especially by booking early —is more essential than ever before. But even if you haven’t locked in your flights yet, it’s not too late to find that affordable summer getaway, if you know where to go.

“Entertainment meccas, such as Las Vegas and Orlando, provide consistent value, with especially good deals in the summer,” says Kevin Heery, Priceline ’s chief product officer. “There is widely available inventory at multiple star-levels and price points to cater to different interests and budgets.”

Broadly speaking, domestic airfares are going down, as Kayak ’s consumer travel trends expert Kayla Inserra says they’ve seen the average price over the last two weeks dip 23 percent, while international fares have gone up 11 percent during the same period. Even so, travelers who want to use their passports can still find flight deals.

We looked at data from both Priceline and Kayak, as well as Skyscanner and Booking.com , to hone in on nine of the best destinations still offering affordable summer vacations.

The Nevada city continues to be a top choice for Americans, appearing on all four booking companies’ lists. For Skyscanner, it was the top booked destination for the summer for roundtrip economy airfare for departures between May 1 and September 1, while Booking.com noted that it’s one of its top cities offering  Getaway Deals , as well as one of the most searched and trending locations for domestic travelers.

Despite June being the peak month for  Kayak , which named Vegas one of its most popular summer destinations, roundtrip summer prices from Phoenix start at $80 and from Chicago O’Hare at $166, with average round trips being $315. Priceline also noted an average nightly hotel at $130, making it one of the most affordable places to stay as well.

Madeira, Portugal

At the top of Skyscanner’s best value destinations for the year is Madeira, Portugal , which has seen a 22 percent price drop since the beginning of the pandemic—and also seen a 123 percent increase in searches, landing it on the booking site’s hot list for family travel.

The best days to fly to the islands off the coast of northern Africa are in August, according to the site , with average roundtrip flights from $588. Fares increase to $692 for bookings in July, and $776 for flights in June.

With bold-faced name attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, it’s no surprise this Florida city also showed up on every booking company’s lists for summer deals. Kayak called Orlando the cheapest summer destination for domestic travel, with an average airfare of $335. Meanwhile Skyscanner’s global travel trends expert Laura Lindsay said it was one of the top booked summer cities, with fares as low as $70 roundtrip in June.

This summer also brings the return of Southwest Airlines service from Boston; Cincinnati; and Jackson, Mississippi; as well as JetBlue flights from Worcester, Massachussetts. New service is also being launched from Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Avelo ; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Long Beach, California, on Southwest; and Providence, Rhode Island, on Breeze.

Taipei, Taiwan

Perhaps most surprisingly, Taiwan’s capital was also called out by three of the travel booking sites. It was the top trending international destination on Kayak, with a 344 percent increase from last year in booking searches, while Skyscanner called it one of the most underrated alternative destinations.

“This summer, especially now that Asia has dropped most of its covid restrictions, we’re seeing travelers venture further,” Heery said, highlighting Taipei as one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with hotel average rates at $130.  Skyscanner  lists August flights from $875. While served by carriers like United and Cathay Pacific, Taiwan own’s  EVA Air also provides top-notch service , as does the newcomer to the market,  Starlux Airlines, which just launched its first U.S. route to LAX , this spring, with  August rates starting at $901 .

Salt Lake City

“Typically a hot ski destination, Salt Lake City is prime for summer travels, too, with plenty of outdoor activities like boat rides, biking, scenic hikes, or visiting one of the many nearby national parks,” Inserra says. She notes that average airfare on Kayak is about $370, which is a 26 percent decrease compared to last summer.  Skyscanner also said that the cheapest month to fly to the Utah capital is June (specifically June 20 is the cheapest arrival date), showing the lowest roundtrip fares starting at $47 in June, $54 in July, and $52 in August.

The north Texas hub is one that “may not be top of mind, but you should definitely check out,” Heery says, noting it’s on Priceline's Top 10 Most Affordable list for both airfare and hotels.  Dallas , the self-professed “official home of the frozen margarita,” is filled with activities to beat the Texas heat, from water activities on White Rock Lake or Trinity River to Shakespeare Dallas ’ outdoor Shakespeare in the Park shows at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater lawn, this year featuring Much Ado About Nothing , Two Gentlemen from Verona , and King Lear .

Kayak also ranked it as one the cheapest summer domestic destinations with $369 average airfare, with roundtrip flights from Phoenix for $190, Chicago O'Hare from $203, and San Diego for $320.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

“If you’re looking to travel internationally without breaking the bank, Canada is a great option,” Inserra says. While Toronto has roundtrip deals on Kayak averaging $405 roundtrip and Montreal for $492, Calgary, which sits just a bit more at $512, is a less crowded market, but offers  nearly 20,000 acres of parks , as well as hiking on the Bow River Pathway, biking around the  Glenmore Reservoir , or even high-speed fun on  one of the continent’s fastest ziplines . Priceline also called out the Alberta city for its low hotel rates, averaging $148 a night.

Cancun, Mexico

There’s a reason Cancun is such a popular beach getaway. Not only is it in the same central time zone as Chicago in the summer, but flight deals are not hard to hunt down. Kayak says that prices have seen a 20 percent drop since last summer, with average roundtrip airfares at $551. Prices tend to rise as it gets deeper into the summer, with $448 in June, $556 in July, and $575 in August.

It’s also one of Booking.com’s top locations for Getaway Deals, and among Kayak and Skyscanner’s top spots for international travel.

Manila, Philippines

For both Kayak and Skyscanner, Manila was one of the top international destinations. With high season being November through January, the off-peak season makes it one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with average nightly hotel rates at $123. Summer roundtrip flights will still likely be in the four-digit range,  according to Kayak , with a sharp drop of nearly $300 from July to August. That said, the booking site did find a one-way ticket between New York and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International for $458.

10 Best Places to Travel on a Budget

An ancient Buddha statue with a sash at a historic site in sunny Thailand

The world is full of cheap vacation spots. No matter what continent — and no matter what interests you have — there are countless places you can visit on a budget.

Few destinations are “too expensive” as long as you do some research, get creative, and have some flexibility. You just might not be living large when you visit them.

Fortunately, there are lots of destinations out there that make budget travel easy, fun, and safe.

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, cheap food, and plenty of activities and excursions that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Here’s my list of the best cheap travel destinations so you can get inspired and plan your next affordable adventure!

Table of Contents

1. Thailand

2. central america, 3. cambodia, 4. the balkans, 8. portugal, 10. morocco.

It’s also super affordable.

With a tourist trail going back decades, Thailand is the heart of backpacking in Southeast Asia , and you can get by on between $25-35 USD per day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (which can be found for as little as $1 USD!), local buses, and the many cheap and free attractions. If you spend all your time on the islands and in expensive accommodation, expect to pay closer to $60 USD per day. However, even at the price, Thailand is still one of the most bargain-friendly destinations in the world and should not be skipped!

Belize , Panama , Costa Rica — these are expensive destinations by regional standards (yet they are still quite affordable). If you visit these central Central American countries, you can get by on $45-60 USD per day as a backpacker or splash out and spend $100-120 a day to live large. Your money goes really far in this part of the world. And with so many countries to choose from, it’s easy to bounce around and see a lot without going broke.

READ MY TRAVEL GUIDES TO THE REGION:

  • El Salvador

Ancient Buddhist relics at a historic site in beautiful Cambodia

Cambodia is cheaper than popular Thailand but just as beautiful and filled with some of the nicest people in the world. Plus, it’s home to the incredible Angkor Wat (which, while expensive to visit, is worth the expense!).

You can get by for as little as $45 USD per day — a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe. A week’s worth of groceries costs as little as $25 USD while a beer costs around $2-5 USD.

And while the region was once known for being unsafe, things have greatly improved over the past decade. There’s a growing backpacking trail here and tourism is on the rise. It’s Europe least-explored region — but not for long so visit before you crowds arrive and the price skyrocket.

The bustling capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, on a bright and sunny day

Tucked away in the Caucasus, Georgia has been at a cultural crossroads for centuries yet it’s not nearly as popular as it should be. Tbilisi is a city bursting with activity, while the rest of the country offers intrepid adventures a rugged, off-the-beaten-path feel.

You can get by on next to nothing here too, with budget travelers spending as little as $30 USD per day. Beer is around $3 USD, a week’s worth of groceries costs around $25-30 USD, and most museums and historic sites cost just $2-5 USD.

While it might feel out of the way, Georgia is one of the next big backpacking hubs. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

A narrow street with bright colors and an old tram going up the hill in Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal has become a lot more popular and crowded in recent years (it has a growing expat and digital nomad scene) and Lisbon has become especially expensive was people move there and drive up prices. It’s a great place after all! However, once you get outside of Lisbon, prices are still relatively cheap compared to the rest of Western Europe — and you’ll see far fewer tourists too. Expect to get by on $50-60 USD per day if you’re a budget backpacker.

While is gorgeous in the summer, if you’re looking for a cheap place to spend the winter in Europe, Portugal is one of your best options.

14 Best Cheap Places to Travel in June

Written by Anietra Hamper and Shandley McMurray Updated Mar 20, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

June is a spectacular month to travel, especially if you're looking to score a good deal on your vacation. From well-priced resorts in the Caribbean to cheap flights to European destinations, there is a bevy of ways to protect your pocketbook during this pre-summer gem.

Yes, you might run into some rain and a few uber-hot and humid days in more tropical destinations , but if you're willing to sweat it out (literally) you're in for a super affordable trip.

June in other regions, like Canada and Australia , presents travelers with comfortable temperatures and beautiful scenery. Beating the summertime rush to hot spots in the Northern Hemisphere helps keep tourist levels almost as low as the prices you'll find on off-season transportation and accommodations.

To help plan your thrifty travels, use our list of the best places to travel in June.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

2. cancun, mexico, 3. costa rica, 4. krakow, poland, 5. san juan, puerto rico, 7. fort lauderdale, florida, 8. beijing, china, 9. buenos aires, argentina, 10. dominican republic, 11. australia, 12. grenada, 13. tenerife, canary islands, spain, 14. dubai, united arab emirates, map of cheap places to travel in june.

Las Vegas at night

Yes, it is quite hot in Las Vegas in June, but since it is the off-season, you will be able to cool off in the swanky hotel room you were able to nab for a great price. During June, you'll save on flights, too. With fewer tourists heading here, and plenty of flight options available, you should be able to find rates for less than $200 round-trip.

While you should expect ridiculous temperatures (we're talking triple digits), June visitors can take advantage of the many indoor activities offered for a reasonable price at this time of year. During the day, take advantage of the dry heat and fewer crowds to hike the Red Rock Canyon or get on the water with a boat tour of Hoover Dam .

Stroll The Forum shops along the Strip and get the best vantage point of the Las Vegas lights from on top of the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Las Vegas or take a gondola ride at The Venetian Resort . Early morning is the best time to be active if you're hoping to stave off the afternoon scorchers.

To save even more money on your vacation, you can just relax by the hotel pool and enjoy the discounted buffets.

Aerial view of Cancun

Summer is the off-peak season in Cancun, which makes it one of the cheapest places to visit in June. Airfares can be almost 50 percent less than during the peak-travel season in the winter months. Resorts and hotels also slash rates significantly to fill rooms. Many resorts will throw in credits to use for spa services, on-site restaurants, and free nights to entice summer travelers.

What's the catch? It's hot in Mexico in June, but since you are by the ocean, it's easy to cool off if that means saving hundreds of dollars for an affordable vacation. June is also on the front end of the hurricane season, which lasts through November, but most storms hit on the tail end of the season.

You can use your Cancun vacation to hit the pristine beaches with fewer people and take advantage of the many water sports available. Maybe this is the year you learn how to parasail. If you feel like getting out of the beach chair, you can always visit the Chichén Itzá Mayan archaeological site or the ruins in Tulum .

Keel-billed toucan in Costa Rica

Prices in Costa Rica are at their lowest this time of year, and since the conversion rate is favorable, especially to the US dollar, it makes even more sense to travel here in June. Hotels and resorts discount their rates to lure in summer travelers outside of the peak tourist season. The all-inclusive resorts are always a good option, especially if you're traveling with the family.

The rainforests, which the region is known for, benefit from the high humidity and rainfall in June, so you will not miss any of the adventure by coming in the off-season. Besides the breathtaking rainforests and an abundance of wildlife, like wild monkeys and birds, Costa Rica has stunning beaches and a multitude of fascinating tourist attractions to enjoy.

There are many types of outdoor adventures to experience to take full advantage of your visit, from ziplining through the forest canopy to trekking the volcanoes in the region. Since there are fewer tourists in June, check with your hotel or resort to see where you can get additional discounts on tours.

Wawel Castle, Krakow

Most businesses in Europe take a holiday in July and August, so June is an ideal month to hit a less traveled place like Krakow for great rates, nice weather, and less crowded attractions before the major tourist rush. Krakow is one of the best places to visit in Poland , so hitting it in the off season is a perfect time to visit. Since Krakow has many hostels and cheap hotels in the city, you can save even more by going that route.

This historic town is one of the oldest cities in Poland and it has an elegant central city with stunning architecture. You will have no problem filling your agenda with sites that you can walk to in June's comfortable weather, like the Main Market Square and St. Mary's Basilica . Don't miss the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a fascinating landmark that's deemed one of Poland's top attractions .

Compared to other destinations in Europe your money will go further in Krakow, especially with discounts that you can find throughout the month of June.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Old San Juan

You will always get the best rates when destinations are in the shoulder or off-peak season. That's why you need to visit San Juan, Puerto Rico in June. The beginning of the off-season, June is the month you'll begin to see hotel rates decline, and they will continue to fall throughout the month. With multiple flights to and from San Juan, it's easy to keep an eye out for bargains or last-minute deals from major airlines.

Tourists also begin to decline in June, which means the area's beautiful beaches will have plenty of room to allow you to stretch out. Speaking of beaches, San Juan is home to some of the best beaches in Puerto Rico , so be sure to pack sunscreen and a hat—you'll be spending a lot of time by the shore.

While there are plenty of excellent resorts in San Juan, all-inclusive resorts are the most popular resorts with families and couples looking to save extra coin. Package deals can be found aplenty in June and some hotels offer additional incentives like discounted tours and spa credits if you book part of your trip through the resort.

Explore Old San Juan and the cobblestone streets and colonial architecture that give the city so much of its charm. Then make your way to the modern side of the city in New San Juan , with top-rated dining and beachfront hotels.

Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

Almost anywhere in Canada is going to be popular for summer vacations, but if that is your window to travel and you want to include locations like Lake Louise in Banff National Park , Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park, or the remarkable falls in Niagara Falls to your Canada itinerary , June is the month to do it. In Canada, children are generally in school until the last week in June and prices tend to remain low until school holidays begin.

Rates for things like airfare and hotels won't be uber cheap, but they will be less expensive in June since it is technically the shoulder season. You'll notice a large hike in fees as soon as July hits.

The price factor for Canada also has to include your ability to see the country's most popular tourist attractions, including some of Canada's best national parks . Winter months might be a cheaper time to travel, but if you cannot visit the sites then it defeats the purpose of saving money. June in Canada offers the best option for discounted rates and decent weather.

Fort Lauderdale

June is the off-season in Fort Lauderdale. It's also the start of the hurricane season, but if you pack accordingly, you can score big on airline and hotel discounts for summer travel to the city. Since Fort Lauderdale is a popular cruise port in Florida, there are plenty of flights available, with schedules and rates that can fit your budget.

Fort Lauderdale is a fun waterside community that suits both beachgoers and those looking for some time to explore a new destination. While Fort Lauderdale Beach will take center stage during your vacation, you can also book some time to take in the wildlife and scenery at the Sawgrass Recreation Park and plan an airboat ride. To cool off from the sizzling June temperatures, you can hop on board a sightseeing boat tour of the city.

The Forbidden City in Beijing

If you have been wanting to visit China's most exciting sights but are deterred by the sticker price to do so, a June trip to Beijing might be of interest. This month is in the shoulder season, so hotel rates are excellent, and flight deals can be found. It is possible to stay in a four-star hotel in Beijing in June for less than 80 USD a night.

Another detail to consider for June travel to Beijing is that there are no domestic holidays, which means tourists coming into the city from other parts of China will be fewer. With lower costs in June, you might consider booking a few extra days in Beijing to spend more time at The Great Wall of China and other tourist attractions like the Forbidden City , Tiananmen Square , and strolling through the narrow streets of Nanluoguxiang .

If you have more time, why not head out on a day trip during your vacation? With all that money you've saved, a visit to the Great Wall of China and The Summer Palace is in order.

National Congress building in Buenos Aires, Argentina

June is the driest month in Buenos Aires, which is reason enough to visit at this time. During the early winter in this South American beauty, travelers will enjoy mild temperatures when traipsing thorough town, taking in some of Argentina's most popular tourist sites, like Casa Rosada in Plaza de Mayo and the Recoleta Cemetery .

In addition to a break from the heat (highs hover around the low 60s), visitors in June will garner fab savings on everything from airfare to hotels. You'll be looking at around 25 percent off the highest rates on hotel rooms as compared to the high season.

The second largest city in South America, this Argentinian hub is packed with fun things to do at all times of year, but enjoying them in June allows guests to do so without elbowing their way through crowds or dropping wads of cash. With extra time on your hands, and bonus cash from all those savings, you should consider taking an exciting day trip to see popular beauties like Igazú Falls .

Beautiful beach in Punta Cana

Summer (including June) offers the best deals to the popular vacation destination of the Dominican Republic. This is when the Caribbean island resorts slash their multi-day all-inclusive rates.

Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are full of all-inclusive resorts that will often help you package your flights, too, which can save you even more money. These popular all-inclusive resorts are designed to draw tourists all year, and they go the extra mile in June to fill their rooms. Since dozens of airlines service the island, you can also find cheap flights.

Since the resorts offer plenty to do, from water sports and private beaches to spa services, you never have to leave the property. If you do want to plan more in your itinerary than just the beautiful beaches , you can book a boat tour or snorkeling trip. There are also a variety of golf courses, animal parks, and swimming-with-dolphin excursions available on the island.

Sydney Harbour

Travel to Australia can be hot and expensive, but if you book a vacation in June, you will catch a break on both fronts because it is wintertime in the country. You can catch about a 30 percent drop in rates on hotels and flights to Australia in June, and experience the country with more comfortable temperatures than you would if visiting during the high-season months.

Once you narrow down whether to visit the pretty beaches or exciting attractions in Sydney , the museums in Darwin , Melbourne's shops and gardens , or a combination of several cities and destinations further afield, you can fill in your Australian itinerary with some of the festivals and attractions in those regions.

There are many annual music festivals and winter festivals happening, so Australia is as thriving with things to do in the winter as it is in the summer; it's just a tad cooler.

No matter where you plan to travel in Australia, you will likely go through Sydney and should spend a few days there to see the stunning Sydney Harbour Bridge and the iconic Sydney Opera House .

St. George's, Grenada

The lush Caribbean island of Grenada is a stunning paradise getaway, but June makes it an affordable one, too, compared to other times of the year. A Grenada vacation in June will cost you about 50 percent less, so you can use that money to spend while visiting the island's famous spice plantations and staying in one of the plush resorts.

You can easily find three- and four-star hotels and resorts for less than 100 USD a night, and many direct flights are discounted also. During the tourist dip in June in Grenada, you will also find offers like hotel room upgrades, discounts for families, spa services, and discounted excursions like snorkeling that will add to the savings.

Grenada is an underrated vacation spot that is often overshadowed by its more popular competitors like the island of Barbados . Grenada has incredible dive sites and 45 beaches to soak up the summer sun. Grand Anse Beach is the most popular, but you can try a different one every day if you like.

While the water and natural environment are the top attractions in Grenada there are other tourist adventures on the island, like Market Square for shopping and the charming downtown of St. George's neighborhood.

Las Teresitas beach, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife is the sunny destination of choice for Europeans looking for an affordable beach vacation. That said, the cost of getting to this Canary Island locale and the price to stay in its most popular resorts can be high during the popular summer and winter seasons. That's why traveling here during June is your best bet for a cheap beach holiday.

In June, you can expect warm temperatures, with highs in the mid- to upper-80s and very little rain. With European schools still in session, the beaches will be free from most travelers, especially if you visit in the first week or two of the month, and you won't have to fight for space on a whale-watching cruise. Spend the money you save on some tasty tapas at a local restaurant.

Want to book a cheap vacation you'll never forget? Why not plan your wedding here? Tenerife is one of the best places to get married in the world .

Dubai at dusk

Let's face it, Dubai is never going to be "cheap." A glitzy Middle Eastern destination peppered with ornate skyscrapers, massive shopping malls, and jewelry stores aplenty, this unique international locale is a must-see, and June proffers the cheapest opportunity to visit.

A June vacation can net you up to 70 percent off rates at some of Dubai's best beach resorts. And, as a major international business hub, flights are easy to book, and airfare deals are not hard to find.

The Dubai city skyline is as spectacular as its turquoise waters. With the cash you save on lodging and airfare, you can splurge in one (or many, many more) of the 1,300 stores in the Dubai Mall . Be sure to book some time in your itinerary to visit Dubai's top tourist attractions , like the spectacular Burj Al Arab building and relax on one of the city's best beaches , like the public Jumeirah Beach . At nearly 830 meters tall, the Burj Kalifa is unmissable.

1. Laos, $30/day

laos cheapest places to travel to

Back in my  budget backpacking days around Southeast Asia , Laos was one of the two destinations where I was able to keep my budget at $30/day, even though accommodations were slightly more expensive than most places in Southeast Asia at that time. Many of the amazing activities you can do in Laos are very affordable. For example, I paid $2.50 to see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, $7 for a full-day tubing experience along the Vang Vieng river, and $6 for an awesome tiger-balm massage. You can also rent an inexpensive motorbike and venture off to smaller towns, where everything is even cheaper!

With more and more new hostels built to cater to the increasing number of backpackers, you can go for less money and for longer. However, if you have a bit more to spend, you can get a gorgeous room for closer to $35/night, which would easily cost $100 in the US.

  • Meals:  $3–9 per day. Some hostels provide a basic breakfast
  • Accommodation:   $5-10 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $6–15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills), or up to $25 for an intercity bus ticket
  • SIM card with data:  $6 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity

2. Vietnam, $30/day

The Cheapest Travel Destinations In the World in 2024

I probably had the healthiest and cheapest  street food in Vietnam . Think soup with rice noodles, cilantro, amazing broth, and a whole shank of pork for $1.50, or a cup of strong, aromatic coffee for $1. Regarding transportation, if you rent a motorbike, you are all set for the day. However, I understand that not everyone is comfortable riding one, especially in countries like Vietnam, where the traffic can be overwhelmingly chaotic. The good news is that GrabBike (similar to Uber but on bikes!) is widely available in all major cities, and the cost is as low as $0.50 for a 2km ride! Long-distance buses and trains are also affordable and reliable. Accommodation is similarly pleasant and easier to afford than almost anywhere else in the world.

  • Meals:  $5–12 per day. Some hostels provide a basic breakfast.
  • Transportation:  $8–15 for motorbike rental or GrabBike trips

3. Cambodia, $30/day

The Cheapest Travel Destinations In the World in 2024

I know for sure that if you choose to rough it, you can easily spend a month in Cambodia with just $1000. Dorms are very basic but can be dirt cheap; the same goes for food and alcohol. I also had my haggling skills to thank, as I was almost always able to talk my way out of being charged unfairly by tuk-tuk drivers. There are some one-off expenses, such as the three-day pass to Angkor Wat, which is currently set at $62, and diving trips that add up, but there will also be days of riding a bicycle in a small village and eating cheap and delicious meat skewers when just a dollar or two could stretch very far.

Another thing is to consider the gorgeous, mostly new  boutique hotels on Booking.com . They are obviously not as cheap as staying in hostels, but for the price, they are so worth it! I’d definitely splurge on a couple of nights and have some R&R time by the pool.

4. Northern Thailand, $32/day

The Cheapest Travel Destinations In the World in 2024

The north of Thailand is easy on a tight budget. As one moves south, costs for accommodation start to double, triple, and even quadruple. Stay up north if you are short on time and money for your Thailand trip. Even in popular places like  Chiang Mai  and  Pai , you can easily find basic dorms for less than $7/night. If you stick with eating street food (to each her own, but why eat pasta when you can have pad thai, am I right?), not only will you save yourself some money, the experience will be much more authentic and tasty, too.

As far as activities go, you really do not need a lot of money to enjoy your day, as most activities such as visiting the White Temple, hiking, or gathering three other people from your hostel to rent a car and  go on some day trips , are all affordable.

  • Meals: $5–15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
  • Transportation: $6-10 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or  a rental car split between four people
  • SIM card with data: $7 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity. See the best SIM cards in Thailand .

5. Indonesia, $35/day

The Blue Lagoon on Nusa Ceningan

The thing about Indonesia is that  it can be really cheap , or it can be quite expensive, depending on one big thing: transportation. Intercity traveling can be very time-consuming and costly, as is traveling from one island to another in a private boat. To save costs, stick with one region or two.  There’s a lot to do and see , and spending more time in one place will allow you to travel deeper and have  a more meaningful experience  anyway. If you want to travel far and wide on a budget, my biggest tip is to take local transportation!

On the flip side, food and drinks are cheap throughout the country, not to mention absolutely yummy too! Riding a scooter through the mountains costs very little, and so does hiking,  chasing waterfalls,  and slouching in a hammock  by the  beach  all day long. Hostels are plentiful, social, and affordable, especially in places like  the Gili Islands .

  • Meals:  $5–15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
  • Accommodation:   $7-15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $8–15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills)
  • SIM card with data:  $5 for 2GB with 30-day validity

6. The Philippines, $37/day

coron black island

The Philippine archipelago can cost quite a lot of money and time to get around, and the hostel options aren’t nearly as abundant as in other Southeast Asia countries. While these two factors seem like a big turn-off for travelers trying to stretch their budget as far as possible, there are ways to keep your costs there low. If you choose to travel during shoulder seasons, book your flights and plan your journey way in advance (it is not the country to always wing it!), and try to stick within 1-2 regions, the Philippines can still be affordable.

On top of that, the country has some of the  most gorgeous islands , beautiful dive sites,  affordable group island-hopping tours , and  hidden gems  that you’d have had to pay so much more to experience in other parts of the world. In that sense, the Philippines is worth every peso you spend.

  • Accommodation:   $7-20 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $10–15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or $15–20 for a boat ride from one island to another
  • SIM card with data:  $6 for 2GB with 30-day validity

7. Malaysia, $40/day

tioman island beach

Being one of the most economically developed Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia is often  perceived as expensive . On top of that, when I visited for the first time, a few people told me it wasn’t worth staying long. However, I ended up meeting lots of locals, was more able to communicate , and found more common ground with them than I had in Cambodia or Laos. I also had so much fun exploring Cameron Highlands,  the jungles of Borneo , and the gorgeous islands.

The cherry on top?  They were all affordable . An overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentian Islands costs as little as $15. There are also so many interesting local neighborhoods and markets that are free to explore. Finally, Malaysian cuisine is like no other — you can find food from just about any culture, and it’s so cheap and tasty (but not necessarily healthy). Malaysia is also one of the cheapest places in the world to get a PADI scuba diving certificate .

The one thing that could make Malaysia expensive to travel in is alcohol, which is highly taxed. However, if you don’t plan on drinking every night, or maybe consider staying sober during your trip, that will not be an issue.

  • Meals:  $5–10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
  • Accommodation:   $7–15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $5–7 for a full day of train and bus rides, or $15–20 for an overnight intercity bus ride
  • SIM card with data:  $8 for 2GB with 30-day validity

8. Sri Lanka, $35/day

train from ella to kandy, Sri Lanka

Like many countries, Sri Lanka can be seen on  a backpacker budget , or one can spend a small fortune there. The biggest kicker was the price of activities, such as safaris, and admission into the UNESCO World Heritage sites.  With each running about $40-$50 per ticket, this made Sri Lanka more expensive to fully explore.

That said, Sri Lanka can be done on closer to $30 per day on the days that you don’t pay for expensive activities. Food, transport, accommodation, and the internet are relatively cheap. One thing to note about transportation is that in some cases, taking a taxi or Uber (in major cities) can be cheaper than renting a bike. Hiring a driver for the day can be as low as $5 per person if you can find people in your hostel to split the cost. The cheapest transportation is the train, which is delightful and (IMO) the best way to travel through Sri Lanka.

  • Accommodation:   $8–15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation : $15–20 per person for a private car and driver split between four people, or $3–5 for a second-class cabin train ride between cities
  • SIM card with data:  $2 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity (yes, it is that cheap!)

9. Nepal, $25/day ($15/day if trekking)

thurong la pass nepal

Nepal is a very cheap country to travel through, with most food, accommodation, and transport running just a few dollars if you eat, sleep, and travel using local options. The street food in Nepal does not have the best reputation, though I never seem to get any stomach problems eating it. You can get cheap and delicious home-cooked meals in local-run small cafés though.

Be very mindful when you book your accommodation online, as big corporations have taken over homestays and turned them into boutique hotels and resorts, so the “local guesthouses” you’ve booked may very well be part of a big hotel chain. I suggest booking the first couple of nights online, and looking for accommodation from real local guesthouses when you arrive.

If you end up trekking , as long as you do so independently and avoid Mt. Everest itself, which costs tens of thousands of dollars, you can travel for as cheap as $10 per day on food and accommodation at the lower elevations, and closer to $20 USD at higher elevations on popular routes like the  Annapurna Circuit .

  • Accommodation : $7–12 per night in a local guesthouse
  • Transportation:  $10–15 per person for a private car and driver split between four people, or a local bus ride between cities
  • SIM card with data:  $3 for 1.25GB with 30-day validity (yes, it is that cheap!)

10. Taiwan, $45/day

cheapest destinations to travel to

Two words: street food, which is delectable and ridiculously cheap. For less than $2, you can get a plate of fragrant rice with pork or chicken on top, a large deep-fried chicken chop, or a bowl of yummy vermicelli with oysters. If you are a foodie on a budget, you know where to go!

In cities like Taipei and Tainan, you can register for city bikes, which cost less than $0.50 per hour per ride and are free for the first 30 minutes. This means you can possibly get around the city all day without spending any money on transportation at all.

That said, high-end food and clothing prices in Taiwan can sometimes be at US levels. Intercity traveling is either expensive on the high-speed rail (HSR) or time-consuming (if slightly cheaper). The internet is also not as cheap as in the countries above.

  • Accommodation:   $10–35 per night in a hostel  (I highly recommend  this one in Taipei !)
  • Transportation : $0–3 for a full day of bike, bus, and train rides, or $20–40 for an HSR ride between cities
  • SIM card with data:  $33 for unlimited data with 28-day validity

That One Time I Became an Illegal Alien in Taiwan

11. India, $30/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

India  is one of the cheapest countries to travel to, but if and only if you’re willing to haggle and hunt for deals. Keep in mind that cheap rooms that run in the $3 range will be very basic, and it’s normal to shower with buckets of heated water. You will be hard-pressed to find cheap gems in the north, but the south, with its gorgeous beaches, may prove more fruitful when it comes to budget accommodation.

The best way to travel through India on a budget is to book things yourself. This means no agents and no online booking sites (except for some intercity travel — for that, check out  12Go Asia ). Similar to Nepal, if you walk into local guesthouses, restaurants, and tour companies, you could easily get the same things in person for half the quoted price online.

  • Meals:  $3–6 per day
  • Accommodation : $5–10 per night in a local guesthouse
  • Transportation : $1–3 for a full day of bus and train rides, or $8–30 for an intercity train ride (sometimes a domestic flight costs as little as $30, if you want to splurge without actually splurging!)
  • SIM card with data:  $3 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity (yes, it is that cheap!)

12. Kyrgyzstan, $25/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

Kyrgyzstan is the country of choice for most travelers interested in trying out Central Asia, and thus most well-suited to  travelers of all budgets . The cuisine is cheap and interesting, and so is getting around using the minibuses. Public transportation prices are fixed and are probably the cheapest aspect of traveling in Kyrgyzstan. If you are doing a multiday hike like the  Tian Shan Mountains , the tour price should include most things.

As for accommodation, you can find hostels in major destinations and local homestays in more rural places for less than $10/night.

  • Meals:  $4–8 per day
  • Accommodation:   $8–12 per night in a hostel  or a local guesthouse
  • Transportation:  $0.20 for a local minibus ride, or $4 for an intercity bus ride — yep, that’s right!
  • SIM card with data:  $3 for 3GB with 30-day validity, though I wouldn’t expect it to work in the mountains

13. Uzbekistan, $35/day

Chor Minor in Uzbekistan

I bet Uzbekistan wasn’t originally on your radar when it comes to cheapest places to travel, but I’m here to tell you that it should be. This Central Asian country has so much to offer, including stunning architecture, the legendary Silk Road, and an awesome blend of old and new. And the best part? It’s incredibly budget-friendly. We’re talking $20 for food and drinks in even the fanciest of restaurants. On top of that, Uzbekistan is one of the safest countries to travel in , and the locals are known for their welcoming hospitality. Win-win!

  • Meals:  $8–10 per day
  • Accommodation: $8–10 per night in a hostel dorm
  • Transportation:  $1 for a subway day ticket in Tashkent, or $9 for a high-speed train ticket
  • SIM card with data: $3 for 8GB of data with 30-day validity

Things I Wish I Knew before Visiting Uzbekistan

14. Romania, $40/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

If you are planning a  European trip that’s affordable  and a little bit off the beaten path, Romania is perfect for you. While the country is known for Dracula, many charming towns and free activities remain unknown to most foreigners. Whether you’re taking a long stroll through the medieval villages or people-watching in one of the beautiful parks, Romania is great for anyone after a European experience on a budget. You can also make use of the free walking tours to check out the numerous historical sites.

Hostels run $10–15 per night, and the food is hearty and scrumptious (a money-saving tip: have your breakfast at the hostel, have a big hearty lunch, and cook your own dinner — it’s easy and affordable to get fresh produce from the local market, so make sure your hostel has a kitchen!). Public transportation is reliable and affordable.

  • Meals:  $10–15 per day
  • Accommodation:   $12–20 per night in a hostel  or a local guesthouse
  • Transportation : $5–10 for a full day of bus and train rides
  • SIM card with data : $6 for 3GB with 28-day validity

15. Georgia, $30/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

Georgia is another underrated European destination that’s absolutely beautiful and affordable. Also, get this: most of you will be able to enter Georgia  without a visa , and stay for  one year .  Say what?!

Quality hostels at a reasonable price range, a meal at a local restaurant for as low as $3, and a local minibus ride for less than $1 are just some of the great things Georgia can offer to its visitors. What’s more? Entrance fees to museums and historical sites are mostly less than $2.  The locals are extremely warm and welcoming, and hitchhiking is totally possible for short and long-distance travel. There are many day trips, hikes, and monasteries in Georgia, so one can easily spend months here and not get bored. It’s perfect if you have more time than money.

  • Accommodation:   $10–15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $3–5 for a full day of bus and train rides, $5–10 for an intercity ride, or $0 if you hitchhike!
  • SIM card with data:  $3 for 1GB with one-month validity

16. Greece, $45/day

sailing greek islands poros

Timing is crucial if you want to travel in Greece on a budget. While prices of flights, accommodation, and tours have been largely cut down since the country’s debt crisis in 2010, summer months still cost more than others. This means avoiding July and August, which are the hottest and busiest months in Greece. Instead, go a few weeks before or after summer, and you will be able to enjoy the country with smaller crowds and a lower budget. You can also cut down on food costs by buying fresh produce from the market and making your own meals, since eating out in restaurants can be expensive in certain areas. A little picnic by the gorgeous beach can be as enjoyable as a lavish meal at a seafood restaurant!

As far as activities go, opt for free walking tours, and if you are planning to do some  island-hopping in Greece , plan well and stick with a group of islands to minimize transfers. Remember that sometimes a domestic flight can be cheaper than a bus ride for any long-distance travel.

  • Transportation : $10–15 per person for  a rental car split between four people  (note: scooter rental costs about $25–30/day), or $10–20 for ferry tickets around the islands
  • SIM card with data : $12 for 2GB with 30-day validity

17. Czechia, $40/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

As more and more tourists flock to Czechia, or more specifically Prague, for its rich history and cheaper-than-water beer, prices have inflated over the last few years. However, it is still easily one of the cheapest Central European countries to travel in, especially if you go beyond Prague, such as Český Krumlov and Telc, to experience true Czech culture at a much lower cost. Local transportation is reliable and affordable, and if you plan to do a lot of traveling, consider getting a three-day pass for $16.

Czech cuisine is very hearty and comes in large portions. While it’s not the healthiest (most meals consist of potato and meat), it will surely fill you up, so to stretch your budget: eat out at a restaurant for lunch, and have a light snack for dinner. Entrance fees to historical sites and museums can be quite expensive ($18 to enter the Prague Castle), but you don’t always have to actually enter — the hike up is awesome, and you can always admire the architecture from outside, and pick only the most intriguing destinations to go in.

  • Meals : $10–15 per day
  • Accommodation :  $12–20 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $5 for a full day of tram rides, $15–20 for an intercity bus ride
  • SIM card with data : $13 for 2GB with one-month validity

15 of the Best European Cities to Visit in December

18. Poland, $44/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

It’s a shame that Poland is often overlooked by tourists. It’s one of those countries where you can easily spend an entire day just wandering and people-watching. There will be days when you spend nothing else but on essentials.

If you are a fan of heritage sites, Poland, rich with culture and history, has 14 to offer. It costs an average of $5 to enter museums and historical sites, which is fairly affordable by European standards. The cuisine is delicious and has a bit more variety than its neighboring countries, though it’s still heavy on the calories. (Make sure to eat at a “milk bar,” an affordable yet tasty option that’s popular with locals.)

The trains are a bit dated but cost very little. Go beyond Krakow and Warsaw, and explore other smaller towns like Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Zakopane, which are all stunning and possibly even cheaper to travel in.

  • Accommodation :  $9–20 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $1–3 for a full day of train rides, $10–15 for an intercity train ride
  • SIM card with data:  $3 for 2GB with one-month validity

19. Croatia, $50/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

If you like turquoise waters, sunshine, and parties,  look no further than Croatia  for your next budget trip. There are thousands of islands off the mainland, excellent weather from May to October, and beach and yacht parties year-round. There is also beautiful architecture to marvel at, interesting sights such as the  Museum of Broken Relationships , and cute small towns to explore.

The essential expenses, including accommodation, transportation, and food, all come with a reasonable price tag. To travel in Croatia on a budget, you need a similar approach to Greece — go in the shoulder season. July and August are the country’s busiest months, so avoid them if possible. Also, keep your island-hopping to a group, to minimize transfers. Since Croatia is gaining more popularity each year, expect prices to keep rising, and aim to visit sooner than later if you want to snag a deal.

  • Meals:  $10–15 per day. Some hostels offer complimentary breakfast.
  • Accommodation :  $12–30 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation : $12–15 per person for  a rental car split between four people , or $10-$15 for a ferry ride
  • SIM card with data : $8 for 2GB with 30-day validity

20. Turkey, $45/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

Turkey can be cheap or expensive, depending on what you want to do and how deeply you want to travel through the country.  A hot-air balloon ride  costs around $400–500, and intercity traveling can be really long and costly. However, there are a bunch of other bucket list–worthy items that cost way less, and if you plan your route well, it is definitely possible, if not easy, to travel through Turkey on a budget.

The stunning Blue Mosque in Istanbul, the breathtaking white travertines in Pamukkale, and the hustling bazaars all over the country are relatively affordable to enter. While long-distance buses are expensive, if you plan well and take overnight buses, you get to save on accommodation. If you are short on time and money, stick with a city or two. Turkish food is delicious and cheap, so that’s one less thing to worry about!

  • Transportation : $1–3 for a taxi ride or $30–60 for an intercity overnight bus ride

21. Lithuania, $44/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

Lithuania is a small country that most travelers skip or spend at most a night or two in, just the capital city, Vilnius. However, this charming place is not only underrated but also very affordable! If you enjoy partying, the nightlife scene in Vilnius is vibrant and fun, and alcohol is fairly affordable. If you’d like a quieter experience, check out the Old Town in Kaunas, Klaipeda, and Curonian Spit. Bear in mind that outside of the capital, hostels can be hard to come by, so book in advance or even consider Couchsurfing!

  • Accommodation :  $10–20 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation : $3–6 for a full day of bus rides within the city, or $15–20 for an intercity bus ride. Buses seem to be more reliable than trains in Lithuania!
  • SIM card with data:  Get a Baltic SIM card for $7 for 3GB with 30-day validity

22. Estonia, $44/day

estonia-3729913_1920

Nature lovers will love Estonia — 53% of the country is forested. This also means that activities like hiking and exploring the national parks are plentiful and affordable (if not completely free). The small towns are also great for walking and cycling, so transportation costs can be minimized. On that note, affordable hostels can be hard to come by in these towns, so consider basing yourself in the capital city, Tallinn, and make day trips to visit them.

  • Accommodation:   $10–20 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $3–6 for a full day of train rides within the city, or $10–15 for an intercity train ride

23. Latvia, $47/day

latvia-3725546_1920

Similar to Estonia, half of the country is covered in forests. There are also thousands of lakes and rivers, perfect for canoeing lovers. One can also easily spend an entire day wandering through the enchanting forests with castles hidden in them (okay, maybe not “hidden,” but this sounds dreamier, as castles should be). The best time to go to Latvia is during fall or winter, when you can canoe down the rivers with the color-changing leaves accompanying you, or when the  Christmas vibe  is on full display at the markets. All of these activities are affordable/free, which is why traveling in Latvia can be done on a budget.

  • Meals : $12–15 per day. Some hostels offer complimentary breakfast.
  • Accommodation:   $14–25 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $2–5 for a full day of train rides within the city, or $10–15 for an intercity train ride.
  • SIM card with data : Get a Baltic SIM card for $7 for 3GB with 30-day validity

The Americas

24. mexico, $42/day.

Tulum

From  Tulum  to  Baja California , Mexico is full of  endless adventures . This vast country is rich in culture, nature, and some of the best food in the world. Though it does not have the best reputation  as far as safety goes , most violence takes place in certain areas, and Mexico has  plenty of safe places to explore .

The best news? It’s easy to travel in Mexico on a budget. For less than $20, you will be able to explore  at least five stunning cenotes , like the one in the picture above; for less than $3, you can devour delicious street food like tacos (I love tacos), quesadillas, and tortillas;  the white-sand beaches  are essentially free; and the hospitality? — priceless.

While getting around within a city is cheap, intercity traveling in Mexico can be costly, mainly because of how big the country is. The best-case scenario is to  rent a car , which costs about $50–70 per day and can be split between four people. If you are  backpacking Mexico solo , try to stay in the same place for a longer time to stretch the transportation costs out. That way, you are able to  travel deeper  and experience authentic Mexico too.

  • Meals:  $8–15 per day. Some hostels offer complimentary breakfast
  • Accommodation:   $10–17 per night in a hostel  ( click here for the best hotels in Tulum )
  • Transportation:  $3–5 for a full day of bus and train rides, or $30–50 for an intercity bus ride (yikes!)
  • SIM card with data:  $10 for 2GB with a 30-day validity

25. Nicaragua, $35/day

plantation-108987_1920

Nicaragua is one of the cheapest  Central American destinations  to travel in, although it’s not likely to stay that way for much longer. The country is nicknamed “the next  Costa Rica ,” and we all know what that means. For now, it remains affordable, fun, and interesting, so go before the prices go up and mass tourism hits.

For outdoor lovers, Nicaragua is great for surfing, volcano hiking, and diving. For a more relaxing journey, the colonial cities are beautiful to take a stroll in, and there are plenty of gorgeous beaches to lie on all day on. the cuisine is cheap and tasty, albeit repetitive. There are hostels all over, so you don’t have to worry about finding cheap accommodation.

One thing to note is that there are unfortunately safety concerns, so check  the official advisory site  and be your own judge before going.

  • Meals:  $6–10 per day. Some hostels offer complimentary breakfast
  • Accommodation :  $5–15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation : $3–5 for a full day of chicken bus rides, or $8–15 for an intercity bus ride
  • SIM card with data : $12 for 1GB with a 30-day validity

26. Guatemala, $38/day

The Cheapest Travel Destinations In the World in 2024

For an amazing Central American adventure on a budget, check out Guatemala. A visit there is no complete without seeing the beautiful  Lake Atitlán , but that’s not all — the country is covered in lush jungles, volcanos, and ruins, ideal for outdoor lovers. When you need a break from outdoor sports, colonial cities like  Antigua  or unique spots like  Hobbitenango  will capture your heart with their stunning architecture and cobblestone streets.

Local food is delightful and affordable, at about $3 for a full meal (except in Antigua, where prices are actually close to US levels).

Local transportation can be very cheap but at times confusing and risky. The locals typically take the “chicken buses,” converted school buses from North America, which are the cheapest way to get around. The buses do not have specific stops, nor is there a board with prices on it. Instead, people simply wave them down and pay the collector. Watch how much the locals are paying and do the same.

  • Accommodation :  $10–15 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation:  $1–3 for a full day of chicken bus rides, or $5–10 for an intercity bus ride
  • SIM card with data:  $13 for 2GB with a 30-day validity

27. Colombia, $35/day

cheapest summer travel destinations

A colorful destination with a dark past, Colombia is fast becoming a popular affordable destination. If you are a history geek, you will love the museums and historical sites in Bogotá, the Lost City, and beyond. If you are into nature, the Amazon awaits. As for diving enthusiasts, Colombia also boasts some of the world’s best sites and gorgeous beaches. With accommodation, transportation and food being so affordable, you will have room for some occasional splurges, so consider booking a luxurious villa for a night or two — you won’t get a deal this great anywhere else in this part of the world!

  • Meals:  $10–15 per day. Some hostels offer complimentary breakfast
  • Accommodation :  $8–12 per night in a hostel
  • Transportation : $1–3 for a full day of bus rides, or $10–50 for an intercity bus ride (be sure to check the domestic flights, which can sometimes be cheaper than buses)
  • SIM card with data : $13 for 2GB with a 30-day validity

28. Arizona & Utah (for a road trip!), $45/day

Grand Canyon in Utah

While the US is generally not a super budget destination, if you are doing a road trip, you can definitely save in some areas and splurge in others to even out your overall budget. For my  American Southwest road trip , I spent  an average of $110/day , which included a camper van rental, food, gas, and camping, plus little splurges here and there. Now, it was definitely more expensive because I was solo; if you had just one other person, you’d be able to split the costs almost perfectly in half (more if you had two other people along, and so on). The more, the merrier (until you run out of room and start elbowing each other).

Some quick tips on saving money:

  • Get a national park pass and for $80, you will be able to get a carload of people into any national park in the US for an entire year.
  • Rent a camper van  if you are renting a car. Then your accommodation, apart from the van fee, can be absolutely free by  camping only on BLM land .
  • Cook your own meals! Again, renting a camper van with kitchen facilities will enable this and save you a lot of money
  • Meals : $12–15/day
  • Accommodation : free
  • Transportation : $9/day for a camper van split between four people
  • SIM card with data : $35 for 1GB with a 30-day validity

29. South Africa, $42/day

south africa road trip

If you are traveling on US dollars or euros, the exchange rate alone will do you a big favor. At this time of writing, one South African Rand is equal to six cents US.

Any hostel, guesthouse, or tourist accommodation in South Africa is called a “backpackers,” and they are typically in beautiful settings and have a unique personality, not to mention they are  affordable too . Food is where the big budget eater or saver can be, as it can get expensive in South Africa. To save money, cook your own food. Grocery stores are plentiful and have reasonable prices. By at least preparing your own breakfast and the occasional dinner, you can save a lot.

Unfortunately, public transportation outside of  Johannesburg  and  Cape Town  can be pretty limited. While there are a few private companies and trains that provide transportation around the country, the best (and possibly) cheapest way to get around is to rent a car and share with three other people, and go on  an epic road trip  together.

  • Meals : $12–15 per day
  • Accommodation :  $14–18 per night in a “backpackers”
  • Transportation : $9 per day for a camper van split between four people

30. Namibia, $45/day

sossusvlei namibia

Namibia is home to some of the world’s most spectacular views, including  the gorgeous Sossusvlei , the hauntingly beautiful Deadvlei, and the massive Fish River Canyon, just to name a few. At first glance, Namibia may not seem like a budget destination, as most accommodations cater to the luxury category, and transportation from one place to another can be limited in such a vast country. However, you just need to  do things a little bit differently  to save a lot of money.

The most important thing is to choose to camp instead of staying in a lodge. The luxury lodges cost about $50–200 per night, but you can camp at their sites for about $8–10 per night; government campsites will set you back about $15–18 per night. As for transportation, ideally you would want to rent a 4×4 and share it with a few people to split the cost. If your accommodation comes with a communal kitchen, make full use of it as cooking your own meals will definitely save you money. Entrance fees are generally cheap!

  • Accommodation : $8–18 per night
  • Transportation : $15–18 per day for a 4×4 split between four people
  • SIM card with data:  $16 for 1.5GB with a 60-day validity

31. Egypt, $30/day

egypt wellness retreat

Pyramids, ancient temples, and royal palaces once inhabited by pharaohs make Egypt seem like it would come at a high price. However, the reality is that this Middle Eastern country can be surprisingly affordable for travelers. One of the biggest expenses in Egypt is getting there, but with some planning and flexibility, you can find decently priced flights to Cairo or Luxor. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll find that hostels and guest houses, food, and transportation costs are surprisingly affordable, especially if you avoid resort cities like Hurghada.

  • Meals : $3–5 per meal
  • Accommodation : $10–15 per night for a dorm room
  • Transportation : $0.50 for a ride on a local bus
  • SIM card with data : $2.81 for 12GB with a 30-day validity

How Low Can You Go?

cheapest countries to visit in 2024

The suggested budget above includes basic accommodation, transportation, and three meals, with a mix of simple breakfasts, hearty lunches, and light dinners, as well as Internet and one paid activity for the day. You will need to add on the other costs, like shopping, alcohol, and little splurges here and there to understand how much exactly is needed.

Some may want to dive or ski, which are typically higher-cost activities, and some just want to walk around and explore neighborhoods. If you are on a shoestring budget, the suggested budgets can be cut down further should you choose to couchsurf, hitchhike, and skip certain activities.

Are there any destinations that you would add to this list? Let us know in the comments below!

There are so many of these places I would love to visit or revisit. Especially a Namibian road trip is on top of my bucket list and I hope that I can do it this year. 42$ per day is alright and the flight tickets from Denmark aren’t that bad right now – it must be a sign! ?

Excellent info but main thought regarding SE Asia, especially regarding Vietnamese street food: #1 many foreigners do not have the gut bacteria to fight off many forms of food poisoning that occurs from street food. #2 All the food in SE Asia has loads of MSG which immediately makes it NOT healthy. Sorry but there’s no cheap Vietnamese that can be considered healthy with the amount of MSG they put in the food. Tasty, yes. Addictive, yes. Healthy, ummm nope.

06/10/2019 at 6:54 am

Fact checking this. #1: The food is mostly bought fresh from the market each day and cooked right in front of you. If you go to a stand with lots of people eating there, you can trust it’s good for you, too. I have never had food poisoning after 7 years of traveling and eating street food. #2: I’ve seen the food made fresh from each raw ingredient and I also know what MSG looks like. I’ve seen it on the stands in China but not in Veitnam. I think it really depends on which stand you eat from, and if you’re worried about MSG the restaurants you eat at can just as easily, if not more easily, add it to the food. I wouldn’t avoid street food because of these reasons. Tourist restaurants serve the same thing, but often less fresh, for more money and you DON’T see it cooked in front of you.

09/09/2019 at 11:01 pm

I agree with your comments Kristen, its also easy to ask and or learn the local word to say dont put it in as a lot of stands will add a little MSG for “extra flavour”

‘Hoom, Hoom, Ajinomoto’, is what to say if you don’t want MSG

I am a US Citizen and often travel to Vietnam at least once a year and I believe you have no idea what you’re talking about. Do not eat food sold on the street or others food stands around the corner. You have no idea what they did to the pre-made ingredients that are served to you in front of you. Most of them do not even have gloves while handling YOUR foods. Most of the times, ingredients are prepared somewhere else and none are monitored as far as food safety is concerned. Anyone can prepare foods without any inspections or licenses requirements and sell to the public whenever, where ever they want!!! Rotten meats are often used to make egg rolls by adding artificial flavorings and fried until the bad smell is gone. Food stands are notorious for being dirty and contaminated badly because they do not have enough clean water to wash or sanitize utensils used to handle their foods. There was a big issue in Vietnam recently when a street vendor was caught “recycling” leftover from the previous customer and sell it to the next customer… Just google about food safety standards in Vietnam and you’ll know.

You clearly dont have a clue abour vietnamese food..they are not into Msg…dont get confuse them with China Mf

06/07/2020 at 10:28 pm

Jessa, I think you should educate yourself before taking such a strong opinion on MSG because you clearly don’t have your facts straight. Vietnamese food is pretty healthy whether or not there is MSG in it. MSG alone is simply not bad for you.

If you don’t believe me read this article:

Street food is about as safe as it gets. Rarely had problems, nor do most people. As for MSG being bad, it must be the most researched food product in human history and no peer reviewed researched shows there is anything wrong with it. Even the EU says its safe. MSG being unsafe is up there with antivax and Elvis being alive on the moon.

Great list! You have been very helpful in getting some unique options together for a Christmas getaway for my husband and I! Although we will probably do AirBnB places instead of hostels, I feel like I have a much better idea of how far our money will go and tips on how to avoid being overcharged.

The biggest expense for me is always the flights since we live in Colorado, but I did find a really good website that has given me fares below what places like Expedia can offer called Skiplagged. If you haven’t checked it out, it can definitely save you some $$! I’m not affiliated with them or anything. Just thought I’d put it out there for other savvy travelers like me who are looking for the best deals!

Nice list. I am planning for Ukraine. Any specific suggestions

08/02/2019 at 12:27 pm

I have been to Ukraine many times so here is a rundown.

Kiev the capital historical city and very beautiful. Liviv cultural capital with some of the best food. Odessa seaside vacation hub and center of comedy.

Each city offers so much to see and do.

These are the cities that you are more likely find someone who speaks english, however I would recommend learning a couple of phrases. The people are hospitable but there still a language barrier.

I love Namibia and persisted in my efforts to visit the Himba People in Opuwo by catching a taxi from my hostel in Windhoek to the pickup point for the van taking locals to the north of the country. There I arranged with the local tour hut (John Jakurama) to go on day and an overnight visit to the villages of these rarely visited people. It was a very cost-effective and engaging interaction to experience the harsh reality of their lives. At the end of my stay the elder of the family kissed my hand in blessing for seeking his village out and bringing them much needed food stuffs and supplies. My kind of travel, cheap, interactive, moving and low priority on most people’s destinations.

You had already mentioned about a lot of places with less expensive, but the matter is that the flight charges are not economical to many of the destinations. I am from India and feel affordable rates with some southeastern Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, loas, Burma, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The flight charges to these places are about 100 US Dollars with Air Asia flights, but it is really too high to Europe, Africa or America. This makes trips costlier. Anyway it is good exploring one.

08/03/2019 at 5:13 am

That’s true, I’m not taking into consideration where you might be flying in from, since we are all coming from different places, but once you get there it’s cheaper than other countries like Norway or Iceland.

Hi! My boyfriend and I took a year off to travel Asia, and about 4 months in we have spent wayyy too much money (oops). We would like to settle down somewhere cheap for a month to try and make up for it. We are hoping to find somewhere close to the beach where the food is good. If there were some (free or cheap) things to do and see so we wouldn’t be too bored that would be even better. Does such a place even exist? ? I was thinking Cambodia, maybe, or Vietnam (cause I love Vietnamese food) but really anywhere in SE Asia would be perfect. Do you have any suggestions for a specific place like that you really loved?

Also, I love this blog, I have probably visited daily in the couple of years leading up to our trip ?

10/09/2019 at 10:22 am

Hey Marianne. It happens! I’d look at Southeast Asia for sure. I’d thought about Hoi An personally. The food is good, wifi is fast, it’s cheap. You can also think about Cambodia or even southern Thailand. You could think about Kuta in Lombok, Indonesia as well. Such a place definitely exists 🙂

Keep in mind it’s usually much cheaper to go check things out in person and ask around for places to rent longer term than it is to try to find them online.

Hi Kristin, I’d really like to do Incan trail in Peru to MP in December, any advice on tours for doing routes less traveled? Thanks Ian

10/19/2019 at 12:02 pm

If you want to do the Inca Trail unfortunately there’s just one trail and it’s not less-traveled, but there’s also the Lares trek and the Salkantay which will end up in Machu Picchu. I liked Alpaca Expeditions for the Inca Trail.

marla braden says

11/09/2019 at 11:18 am

I second Alpaca Expeditions. I did the Inca trail in December, not really high season. I got tickets when I got to Cusco (not 6 months advance) and our group of maybe 10 people plus the guides and porters were the only people I saw for 4 days until we arrived at Machu Picchu itself. Off season is the way to go anywhere, imo.

Recently did southern Utah (from OH) for 6 weeks and spent 9000 dolllars … that’s about 200 dollars per day. Gasoline 1500 (8000 miles), hotels and campsites 1200, NP pass and BLM trail fees 100, topo maps/books/gifts 400, my own jeep routine and unexpected service 500, jeep rubicon 4WD 10 day rental for The Maze 1950, 4WD and backpacking supplies 400, laundry 50, food/beverages/snacks/water 2900. Biggest expenses are always food from restaurants and the remote expensive trips that are hard to access.

Yes, very surprised you didn’t include Morocco! Marrakech (or Casablanca) can get expensive if you want the most luxurious accommodations/prefer gambling, but overall a very cheap country to travel. You can get around easily if you wish to visit multiple cities, for as little as $8 or so intercity. (overnight sleeper trains will cost a bit more) You can even fly from Madrid or Lisbon to Marrakech for around $100 if you know where to look 🙂 I’d say to definitely visit Marrakech, Fes, and Chefchaouen if you are not sure where to travel. Stay in riads or hostels. Walk around the souks, and take in all the sights the cities have to offer. Getting to the desert is a little more difficult and costly, but worth the experience if it is something you have always dreamed of doing!

I know you are already bogged down with reply’s and on to your next adventure but I wanted to pick your brain. Myself, husband and our daughter, age 10 want to spend a month next year in another country (if all goes well, we may make it into an annual thing). We are great outdoors, we love food, we love history and love animals and we are all well traveled. We would like to pick our first month long trip for June 2022 (climate has to be below average of 85 degrees F). Basically we can’t decide on where we should go to stay around 10k for all 3 of us and how best planning for a month in a country. Any insight would be wonderful! Plotting an Escape? These Are Summer 2024’s Hottest Destinations

Plus, a list of the lowest cost hotspots.

As  Memorial Day approaches and the weather heats up, our eyes inevitably turn to our calendars. It’s been an eternity (OK, a few months) since the winter holiday break, and after an entire springtime with our noses pressed to the grindstone, we’re all craving a summer vacation. But many of us are due to be met with decision fatigue: Which vacation destination should we choose to visit in summer 2024?

Fortunately, luxury car rental company, Renty , has done some of the work for us: They’ve compiled a top 10 list of the most popular locations this summer. How did they glean this precious information, exactly? They went through the trouble of carefully analyzing U.S. search volume over the past 12 months. They used vacation-relevant keywords to narrow down this list of the hottest (pun intended) luxury destinations around the world.

While no rule says you have to take a luxury vacation or that you should go where everyone’s going, we don’t blame you for wanting to be clued in on which destinations are most in demand, whether you’re hoping to stay on trend or avoid large crowds and inflated prices. The results run the gamut from big cities to beachy countries that instantly make you think of cocktails and seafood .

And if you’re dying to keep it simple and stay stateside, we’ve got you covered there, too. WalletHub has thrown together a list of the best summer travel destinations for 2024 — only their list evaluates the cheapest U.S. destinations that are also easy to reach . We’re paying special attention to their lists of destinations with the lowest travel costs and lowest local costs. After all, an affordable weekend whirlwind can be incredibly satisfying.

But regardless of where you end up, here’s your obligatory reminder to pack carefully and prepare for vacation snafus in advance. After all, no one wants to deal with the stress caused by a snoring seatmate or a lost passport in real-time.

26 of the best affordable holiday destinations for 2024

Turkey’s a steal, india offers serious value and packages to the gambia are absurdly cheap. these are the destinations where your pound will go further.

The Goddess of Mercy Temple in George Town, Penang, Malaysia

H ow to unearth a bargain? You could look for somewhere with a favourable exchange rate. You could delve into the cost of staples such as sandwiches, sun cream, buses and beach umbrellas. Or you could trust us, and our sources. Pulling together the latest research by the Post Office, currency specialists and others, we’ve listed 2024’s best-value places to visit. They range from Sri Lanka, Egypt and Turkey to the lesser-sung likes of North Macedonia, Ikaria and Bolivia — via a few surprising candidates in Spain, France and Portugal. Each comes with the typical prices for coffee, food and, of course, a beer.

This article contains affiliate links, which may earn us revenue

1. Ikaria, Greece

Seychelles beach in Ikaria

Lonely Planet recently ventured to name the globe’s ten best-value destinations (in no particular order). One of them was this teeny-tiny Greek island, which is especially good for budget-friendly rooms, even if other costs are hardly low. Best accessed via a flight from Athens, Ikaria hitherto had various other claims to fame: it’s of the world’s four original blue zones, where people live longer than average; it’s where Icarus is said to have crashed after cockily flying too close to the sun; and it’s supposedly the birthplace of pleasure god Dionysos, which perhaps explains all the wineries. The big draw, however, lies in beaches such as Seychelles, christened for its Indian Ocean-esque white sand, pale pebbles and turquoise waters.

2. penang, malaysia.

A rickshaw ride through George Town in Penang

For its Holiday Money Report, another annual publication, Post Office Travel Money analyses the costs of eight typical items — among them a three-course dinner for two, sunscreen and insect repellent — in 40 global destinations. Many of the top performers in 2024 have become more expensive than in 2023, but not so Penang, off Malaysia ’s northwestern coast. A large island where pure shores and rainforests sit alongside Buddhist temples and hawker street food, it has lots of beach hotels happily available in three-figure, flight-inclusive package deals from Britain. At less than £7 for a queue-jump pick, the Penang Hill funicular is similarly economical.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £6, beer £3

3. Czech Republic

The town of Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

It’s always nice — for us, at least — when the pound soars in value against another currency, meaning lots more bang for the same buck. That’s the case right now with the Czech koruna, versus which sterling soared by more than 12 per cent since early 2023. As such, you’ll be able to afford more walnutty trdelnik pastries in saintly Cesky Krumlov, extra pints in Pilsen, an additional wine tour in student-powered Brno and a bonus castle visit in Prague. In general, try to limit your time in the capital — which is predictably the most touristy Czech destination — in favour of exploring the rest of this underappreciated, frequently fairytale Central European country.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £10, beer £1.50

• Best things to do in Prague

4. Tokyo, Japan

Shibuya, Tokyo city

Tokyo has a reputation for being expensive — and it certainly can be, especially compared to other parts of Asia — but it’s also great at catering to travellers of every budget. Its capsule hotels, for example, offer horizontal cubicles at prices comparable to a bed in a hostel dorm room but with considerably more privacy, while a piping hot bowl of ramen in a typical restaurant costs as little as £4. There’s plenty to see without spending a penny, from the busy crossing at Shibuya to the Buddhist temple at Senso-ji.

Average prices Coffee £1.80, evening meal £5.50, beer £3

• Best hotels in Tokyo • Best things to do in Tokyo

5. Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Jerez de la Frontera

Home of sherry wines, Jerez is a vibrant Andalusian city that’s managed to escape most of the tourist hordes of nearby Seville, which means prices here are comparatively modest too. At restaurants like Tabanco Plateros, for example, you can get a flight of five sherries with matching cheese and charcuterie for around €10. And of course you can take advantage of the menu del dia , a set lunch menu that generally costs around €15 for two courses plus wine. Touring and tasting through the bodegas in the city is an essential part of any visit here, but otherwise this is a laid-back city where people watching from a terrace cafe is greatly encouraged.

Average prices Coffee 90p, evening meal £12, beer £1.70

Turunc Bay in Marmaris

Despite sterling’s well-documented struggles, it has gained ground on some other faltering currencies. Easily the biggest leap concerns Turkish lira; in 2023 for example, you could get more than twice as much for each pound as you could in 2021. Even allowing for soaring inflation, that means huge savings. The obvious places in Turkey to splash such bonus cash are buzzy, beach-speckled Turquoise Coast resorts such as lively Marmaris, busy Bodrum and quieter Dalyan.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £6.50, beer £2.50

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Tapas Bar 52 in Lisbon

The Post Office’s Travel Money department produces an annual City Costs Barometer charting the best-value European centres. In the most recent edition, Lisbon came top, having barely seen any rise in prices; the average total cost of two nights’ three-star accommodation over a weekend is now estimated to be £121. Aiding the Portuguese capital’s status as western Europe’s most wallet-friendly option are numerous bars serving filling petiscos (small plates) such as octopus salad.

Average prices Coffee £1.50, evening meal £14, beer £2.50

• Best affordable hotels in Lisbon • Best things to do in Lisbon

8. Sri Lanka

The coastal fort city of Galle in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka ’s still-recovering currency is offering astounding value to visitors, who are being welcomed back with open arms. In the capital Colombo, opulent hotels with 40m rooftop infinity pools are barely £50 a night. Trains to the Portuguese-era fort city of Galle cost around £5 — in first class — while you can pay around £40 to look for leopards in Yala National Park or take a whale-watching cruise. Then, after glorious days on white-sand beaches, the finest crab curries should bring change from a tenner.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £4, beer £1

• Best hotels in Sri Lanka • Best beaches in Sri Lanka

9. The Gambia

The beach at Serekunda in the Gambia

Mainland Africa’s smallest country packs plenty in. Spellbinding sandy beaches are the Gambia’s most famous attribute, with Cape Point the most Instagram-worthy, but there’s much more to relish: bird, hippo and chimp-watching cruises in River Gambia National Park, leopard-patrolled wetlands and mysterious stone circles. Nevertheless, and despite some excellent beachfront hotels, winter sun packages to this West African country are absurdly cheap. With the shared GMT time zone, you needn’t even worry about jet lag.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £7.50, beer £1

10. Bali, Indonesia

Mount Batur in Bali

This volcanic, tropical Indonesian island can be startlingly affordable — especially if you travel in its shoulder seasons of April to June or September to October, when the weather is usually getting gradually drier or wetter. High-quality budget hotels proliferate, most of Bali ’s beaches are free and activities tend to be a bargain: less than £30 for cookery classes or guided sunrise treks up Mount Batur. Taxis also cost little, as does zooming around on a rented scooter. Food-wise, stick to classic streetside snacks such as nasi jinggo (rice and side dishes such as sambal-fried peanuts, all wrapped in banana leaves) or dine in the affordable restaurants of Canggu and Ubud.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £6.50, beer £3

• Best hotels in Bali

A beach bungalow in Placencia, Belize

In the pint-sized Central American country of Belize you’ll find jaguar-filled jungle, marvellous Maya ruins, caves, coffee farms, Caribbean beaches and, to enable splendid snorkelling and diving, a portion of the world’s second-longest barrier reef. Alongside some eye-wateringly expensive resorts for dot-com squillionaires come excellent boutiques in chilled-out beach towns. A good bet is Placencia, from which a two-dive outing will set you back as little as £125.

Average prices Coffee £3, evening meal £8, beer £3

• Best hotels in Belize

12. Jamaica

Montego Bay beach in Jamaica

According to the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Holiday Report, Jamaica remained the best-value destination in the Caribbean. That ranking was based on prices surveyed in the north-coast hub of Montego Bay, a destination for beach-goers, snorkellers and rainforest explorers. The reggae-loving Caribbean island also lays on waterfalls galore, with Viator tours starting from £40. Even Jamaican rum is inexpensive at the airport duty-free.

Average prices Coffee £3, evening meal £13, beer £2.50

• Best all-inclusive hotels in Jamaica • Best things to do in Jamaica

13. Bolivia

Lake Titicaca and Copacabana in Bolivia

Sightseeing trips are shockingly cheap in this landlocked country. Multi-day tours in cross-country vehicles to the epic Salar de Uyuni salt flats (that are turned by rains into a surreal mirror from January to April) can be priced as low as £80. Voyages on Lake Titicaca, taking in floating villages, are often less than £10, while Amazon jungle lodges tend to be more affordable than anywhere else in South America. In fact, the only expensive thing about Bolivia is getting there in the first place. A two-week tour with Exodus will deliver all the highlights; transport and most meals are included.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £5, beer £2.50

• Best places to visit in South America

14. Hong Kong, China

The night market in Kowloon

According to currency-card provider FairFX, sterling has enjoyed great recent growth versus Hong Kong ’s dollar. Although bars and restaurants are often pricey, the vast array of accommodation allows for budget-conscious stays that can be fuelled by the output of the city’s sizzling street-food stalls; the likes of skewered curry fish balls, egg waffles and stinky tofu are wonderfully affordable. Taxis in Hong Kong are also cheap compared with Europe or North America.

Average prices Coffee £4, evening meal £16, beer £5

• Best hotels in Hong Kong • Best things to do in Hong Kong

15. Tallinn, Estonia

The cobbled streets of Tallinn

In the Gonsiori branch of La Prima Pizza, which has topped TripAdvisor’s rankings as the best restaurant in the Estonian capital, those titular pizzas cost from around £8. Serving a wider Italian cuisine than its name implies, the cosy venue also offers homemade limoncello. Elsewhere, you’ll find Nordic-inspired high-end dining — try Rataskaevu 16 — at prices considerably lower than for the same fare in western Europe, plus some superb rates at very cool design hotels. Most are close to the 14th-century old town in Tallinn — 2023’s European Green Capital — and its many free walking tours.

16. Albania

The beach at Dhermi in Himare

Everyone knows that eastern Europe is cheap — yet, even by those standards, prices in Albania are absurd. At a perfectly decent bistro here, couples can eat three courses of traditional food (try tave kosi — baked chicken or lamb in yoghurt), throw in a bottle of wine, and still struggle to spend a tenner. The same goes for entrance fees to the castle of national hero Skanderbeg or sunbeds on the Albanian Riviera amid Himare’s blissful, sandy shores. Luxury stays generally cost a pittance too.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £7, beer £1.50

• Best things to do in Albania

17. Brittany, France

Roscoff in Brittany

Crêpes. Together with their savoury, buckwheat galette counterparts, these omnipresent pancakes are a key reason why Brittany is so doable on a budget. Open at all hours and never expensive, crêperies allow you to save up for splashier seafood dinners. Also helping to cut costs are direct ferries from Portsmouth, Plymouth or Poole, lower petrol costs and an abundance of self-catering accommodation including holiday parks. While here, spend your days on sandy shores or admiring standing stones older than the Pyramids.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £16, beer £5

18. Hoi An, Vietnam

Traditional houses in Hoi An

Frugal travellers are thrilled by large portions of southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos and the original backpacker destination, Thailand. But, according to the 2023 Post Office Long Haul Travel Report, Vietnam brought the best value of all — indeed, the city of Hoi An was named the year’s cheapest long-haul destination. Because everything else is so cheap, it’s possible to stay in top-notch hotels and still subsist on £100 a day, including sunscreen, cocktails, coffees and a three-course dinner for two. Local draught beers are especially cheap, while renting a moped will cut taxi costs and help you get to the nearby beaches. Cua Dai’s stretch of white sand is only a couple of miles to the east.

Average prices Coffee £1.50, evening meal £5, beer £1

Kumarakom Lake Resort in Kerala

In a 2023 study, travel-money specialist Eurochange compared the pound’s strength against various countries’ currencies, looking at its value in late 2022 in comparison to the two preceding years. One of its tips was for India , where British currency converters benefitted from an additional £217 worth of rupees for every £1,000 exchanged. From the beach resorts of Goa to Keralan canal cruises or boutique hotels in pink-hued Jaipur, the south Asian country is a great option for anyone economising — aided by its affordable, excellent vegetarian food.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £3.50, beer £2

• Best hotels in Goa • Best places to visit in India

20. Andorra

A mountain restaurant at Comallempla in Andorra

According to the 2023 Post Office Ski Resort Report, prices at most European pistes are steadily increasing. Brilliant value for families, however, is Vallnord-Pal Arinsal in Andorra — a petite, Pyrenean principality wedged between France and Spain — courtesy of free pre-booked lift passes for children aged under 11. These allow a family of four to save over £400, and reduce the weekly cost to an estimated total of £1,784. Not bad for somewhere with a decent range of runs across handsomely wooded slopes.

Average prices Coffee £2, evening meal £14.50, beer £2

21. Bamburgh, UK

Bamburgh Castle in the early morning sunlight

Among more than 100 seaside towns investigated by the consumer body Which? in 2023, Bamburgh was one of just four to receive five stars for value for money. Dramatically overlooked by its namesake Norman castle, Northumberland’s most memorable resort also scored full marks for the quality of its sandy beach, for its tourist attractions — including a golf course — and, unsurprisingly, for that scenery. On days out, visitors can go dolphin-watching in the Farne Islands or cross the causeway to mystical Lindisfarne.

Average prices Coffee £2.50, evening meal £14, beer £3

22. Marrakesh, Morocco

The Koutoubia mosque in Marrakesh

Having analysed 41 prominent holiday locations, the money-saving website Savoo named Morocco ’s most famous city as the cheapest all-inclusive destination outside Europe in 2023. Overlooked by the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh offers affordable riads around its souks, then bigger, resort-style places in leafier suburbs. Petits taxis are a cheap way to get around and haggling on every price is positively expected.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £9.50, beer £3

• Is it safe to travel to Morocco right now? Latest travel advice

23. North Macedonia

The Church of Saint John on Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia

North Macedonia delivers canyons, mountainous national parks and Ottoman-era villages announced by narrow minarets. The standout sight is beach-lined Lake Ohrid, below its clifftop church, with the possibility of biking jaunts, kayak hire or waterside wine tasting. Just as enjoyable is kayaking through the quiet, spellbinding Matka Canyon and looking for lynx around the forests and waterfalls of Mavrovo National Park. Despite all of that, few tourists come, meaning absurdly low prices for Britons, further helped by the absence of the euro.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £6, beer £2

A restaurant in Dahab with views of the Red Sea

Avoid peak season (December to February) and holidays in Egypt can be extremely cost-effective, especially with the pound strong against the local dollar. From £2 shakshuka breakfasts to 50p fava bean falafel wraps, meals sell for a song. Cross-country trains are not only eco-friendlier than flying but far cheaper — 12-hour Cairo to Aswan services can begin at £36, for example. Shop around for well-reviewed excursions — a Nile sunset cruise or a Luxor tour — and consider the Luxor Pass; it’s both decent value and mighty convenient. As for the Red Sea, skip pricey hotspots such as Sharm el-Sheikh in favour of more authentic Dahab.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £5, beer £1.50

• Best hotels in Egypt • Best all-inclusive hotels in Egypt

25. Mombasa, Kenya

Diani beach, south of Mombasa

Rather overshadowed by the country’s safari offerings, Kenya ’s stunning coast ranked as second cheapest in the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Travel Report. A string of gorgeous, pearl-white beaches await in and around the city of Mombasa, as do plenty of other cost-efficient options: an old town with elegantly carved wooden doors, diving in the Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve (entry £14pp), crocodile farms and giraffe-filled wildlife sanctuaries. Use Ubers to get around and visit in October, November, March or April for the best rates.

Average prices Coffee £1, evening meal £5.50, beer £1.50

26. Cape Town, South Africa

On the Rock viewpoint overlooking Camps Bay in Cape Town

South Africa’s most popular city is another place where prodigious Ubers are a cheaper bet than taxis. There’s no charge to walk up Table Mountain (though cable car return tickets from £16 will tempt) and a staple “Gatsby” (a long sub with salad, fries and, often, masala steak) provides stodgy fuel for a song. In July and August many Cape Town restaurants offer special deals, perhaps helping you afford a Winelands tour or trip to see Boulder beach’s penguin colony.

7 Affordable Towns In Western Europe I Loved Staying In During The Summer

Zakynthos, greece, average cost to visit: $331 per week.

Yes! You can visit Greece without spending thousands of dollars! Zakynthos is a beautiful island in Western Greece that is famous for its crystal-clear waters, secluded beaches, and beautiful villages.

One of the many great things about Zakynthos is that you can enjoy the beautiful beaches for free.

In addition to swimming and sunbathing, you can also go snorkeling, sea kayaking, and even scuba diving. For more budget-friendly activities, you can take a hike to the top of Mount Skopos or visit the heavily photographed Shipwreck Beach for stunning views of the coast.

Istanbul, turkey, average cost to visit: $882 per week.

For those who are seeking insanely picturesque views and an entirely new and rich culture to dive into this summer, Istanbul, Turkey is the perfect budget-friendly option. Because of the lira exchange rate in Turkey, you can travel here for a very low cost.

There is so much to see and do in Istanbul on both the European and Asian sides, so it's recommended to spend at least four to six days here to experience everything.

During the summer, beat the heat by visiting Istanbul's numerous beaches or one of the 13 museums in the city that are completely free to visit!

Located on the West Coast of Northern Oregon, Seaside is a beautiful beachy town that's perfect for an affordable summer vacation.

With a three-mile-long beach, seaside promenade, and an adorable downtown, Seaside is never short of fun and affordable activities for all ages.

After swimming in the ocean and relaxing on the sand, rent a bike to explore the town's scenic promenade or go for an evening hike in and around the town to a lookout of the Pacific Ocean.

Seaside is also a next-door neighbor to Cannon Beach, so I highly recommend taking a day trip to see the famous Haystack Rock and enjoy its quirky downtown shops!

Bali, Indonesia

Average cost to visit: $516 per week.

WalletHub shares this year's perfect getaways that won't break the bank

Erika Mailman

Summer’s just a heartbeat away. If you’re stuck in your cubicle, or you’re a teacher showing movies for the next week or so, or maybe you’re a high-powered CEO getting off your private jet: you’re fantasizing about the beach or a tent pitched in the wilderness...or a visit to the big metropolis you’ve always dreamed of.

According to personal-finance website WalletHub , nearly 82 percent of Americans plan to take a trip this summer (hopefully the remaining 18 percent aren’t traveling this summer because they already took off in the winter!). And close to half of those who plan to travel will take more than one trip (42 percent). That’s a whole lot of us—whether it’s far-flung travel or just renting a weekend space an hour away. We personally love the day trip turned into an overnight trip. WalletHub studied 100 metro areas, using 41 metrics, to come up with its list of the perfect summer getaways, considering our budgets and hopes to have a great time without credit card trauma down the road. The metrics were details like the average price of a two-person meal, the city's tennis courts and beer gardens, and average gas prices: you get the idea. It’s a great way to get a quick look at how a city measures up to others around the country.

This summer, you will want to hit Atlanta , since it is the top scorer on this study. It did well in all categories, including not having many travel hassles and costs, having good weather and a fair amount of entertainment options, and doing well in terms of safety (having low numbers for property damage and violent crime). Take a walk on the BeltLine or visit the Coke museum, and enjoy the best of Georgia’s capital.

Second on the list is Washington, D.C. It scored first for safety and did well in the other categories. With parks, cherry blossoms, historical sites, and an incredible art museum , this city makes for an incredible destination. Did we mention that the Smithsonian museums are free and are open daily except for Dec. 25?

In third place is Orlando, Florida, which fulfills all the amusement park -meets-beach desires you’ve ever had. In fact, Orlando is No. 2 nationwide for best activities (the No. 1 spot is taken by urban Honolulu, which is fourth on this overall list).

Here is the full list of the top 20 summer travel destinations:

1. Atlanta, GA

2. Washington, DC

3. Orlando, FL

4. Honolulu, HI

5. Tampa, FL

6. Austin, TX

7. Philadelphia, PA

8. Chicago, IL

14. Miami, FL

15. Springfield, MO

16. Knoxville, TN

17. Tulsa, OK

18. Oklahoma, OK

Kayak's Summer 2024 'Travel Check-In' Reveals Insights On Cheapest Flights And Destinations To Visit

Kayak's data reveals insights on the summer's cheapest flights and the most popular destinations travelers are searching for vacation.

Natasha D • May 15, 2024

cheapest summer travel destinations

Kayak’s latest “Travel Check-In” shared all the deets a jetsetter needs to plan this year’s summer. The online travel company’s data-based information revealed details about trends for summer flight prices. In positive news, on average, the cost of flights is down 13% this year compared to last. The only global regions where flight travel increased were the Middle East, Africa, and Asia based on those leaving from the U.S.

For U.S. travelers who want to go abroad, the cheapest flights this summer will be to Canada and Mexico. Or, travelers can also head South of the Border to Guadalajara, or Mexico City.

Kayak claims the Canadian and Mexican destinations hold its “cheapest average airfare for [the] summer,” so your pockets will thank you. Otherwise, flights to Belize City and Liberia, Costa Rica are down nearly 25% compared to last year.

The Cheapest Destinations and Times to Travel

If you are flying domestically, Kayak’s report advises you to book between late May and early June to get the best deal. Those looking for the best flight prices to Europe should check July, or consider going in early September.

Europe has four out of five of the most searched cities regarding seasonal travel despite Africa being the “#1 trending region for summer.” The European cities garnering the most interest are London, Rome, Athens, and Paris ( 2024 Olympics !). Another international hotspot that made the “Top 5 Most Search International Destinations” list was Tokyo.

Travelers looking for domestic getaways have searched Seattle, Las Vegas, Orlando, Honolulu, and New York City. Interestingly, Seattle claimed the top spot on the list of popular cities on travelers’ radars.

How Are Holiday Weekends Impacting Summer Travel Prices?

Domestic flight and nightly hotel room prices during the weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day have all decreased since last year. If traveling on a budget , Orlando was on the “Top 5 Domestic Cities That Won’t Break The Bank” lists for all three summer holiday weekends.

Find your budget-friendly vacation in the U.S. or beyond.

cheapest summer travel destinations

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

The travel bug continues to bite in 2024, and data indicates growth in both domestic and international trips, along with a cost increase for hotels and transportation. But don't worry as it’s still possible to take an economical vacation whether you want to travel near or far.

Kayak , one of the world’s leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of domestic and international destinations for low-cost trips. To determine the most wallet-friendly locations, the company analyzed flight searches from July 2023 through December 2023 for travel during 2024. The top 250 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average combined flight and hotel price were considered, excluding outliers based on certain criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns. Prices and percentages are on average and subject to change.

With that in mind, here are some of the most affordable places to travel in the U.S. and around the world in 2024.

Denver, Colorado

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

cheapest summer travel destinations

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations.

◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.

◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”
